Aerial roots are a touchy subject for some bonsai artists, some love ‘em, some hate ‘em. Funny thing is, I’m in the middle, if they work and make the tree look old, then they’re appropriate. If not, get rid of them. The city beneath this Banyan tree of Matrimandir, Auroville! It's tranquil and peaceful! You won't miss it if you visiting Auroville. Some 50 years ago, on a vast, barren plateau north of Pondicherry, a lone, young banyan tree stood guard. Then, the Auroville ashram was built in this space and now the tree looks like this. The aerial roots which grow down from the branches towards the ground, take root to become new trunks. It's massive and gives shelter to hundreds of people. I am attempting to listen to my plant. This is my Variegated Monstera or Thai Constellation. Since purchasing it last June, it’s only sprouted one new leaf. Other then that it’s basically stated as is for months. Now I’ve been troubleshooting trying to figure out what this baby wants. One of my more drastic attempts was to amp up the the light it was receiving so I moved it from my bedroom to my living room to a nice sunny and humid spot. I also eventually repotted it to a terracotta (it was originally in ceramic) Then it began to produce a super long aerial root that stretched all the way to the window about 2.5 feet. Questions I started to ask myself- “ok, am I fertilizing enough? Is it looking for other nutrient resources? Does it just want to climb? Is it pot bound?” Well I figured the best way to know what’s going on is by digging a little deeper- literally I unpotted it. Thankfully the roots were big white a juicy and definitely more abundant then the last time I potted it, a sign of a healthy root system. It was kind of crowded but I wouldn’t consider it “root bound” So I decided the best course of action was to give it a slightly larger pot with fresh soil mix (potting soil, perlite, orchid bark) and a new trellis for the aerial root to climb.
