OUGH how about ⏰ + 👥 for our hades s/is to shake things up >:3 i hardly ever talk abt mine but his name is aellopus (aello for short!) and hes the general of an army of harpies hades employs throughout the underworld. hes a big bird monster who appears scary and unapproachable but hes actually very sweet and a huge softie. bc of his appearance tho not a lot of folk try to talk to him and he gets very lonely :> he NEEDS friends so bad so hes perfect for this meme HDKSKS
I didn't know you had a Hades s/i!! This is very exciting
When/How would our S/Is meet? How were first impressions?
Paramonos (Moe for short :]) does spend a lot of time around the House, so it’s likely that the two ran into each other there, maybe Aello was reporting to Hades at the time and Moe passed by. He probably did a double-take because he hasn’t seen a harpy before up close, but when he initiates a conversation (partly so he can find out more, partly to get to know this New Person) he reigns in that awe to be polite. In terms of first impressions, Aello is cool! And a little intimidating, since he is a big bird creature, but he’s still an intelligent person, not an animal, so Moe reckons if he meant any ill-will he’d probably warn or threaten first. Paramonos probably gave off the first impression that he’s generally a bit inexperienced and kinda bored/looking for stuff to do.
Would they be friends/enemies? How well do they trust each other? How do you think the dynamic would be?
I think they could get along well enough! Moe could continue to strike up a convo with Aello whenever they bump into each other, and even offer to try and tell his fortune (Moe needs the practice, after all! Win/win). I assume Aello can get busy with work, but Moe’s a great choice if he wants someone to chill with afterwards. Plus, the more they talk, the more Moe would trust Aello because it’s clearer that the latter isn’t as scary as it first appears.
I also think there’s something a little funny about the dynamic of “Looks unapproachable but he’s actually a softie” vs “Looks chill but has received visions of The Horrors”.
#Thank you for asking!#Aello is so cool I love harpies!! I think they'd have fun together#I sent you an ask too btw but I'm worried a couple asks I've sent to different people have been eaten. So hopefully it went through!#Paramonos (OC)

Hi again, I’m the Iris asker from earlier. Thank you for all the info! I was also wondering what words are associated with her? Like Aphrodite is love and beauty. I don’t have a worship for her yet. Still in the researching stage. Butterflies are my favourite too! I have a crystal prism butterfly figurine that I think would be perfect for her. What drew you to worship Iris? For me it’s that she is goddess of rainbows because rainbows are so magical and happy!
You’re very welcome!! Also that butterfly prism sounds absolutely PERFECT for her! I’m sure she’ll love it!! (I also want one for my altar now… LOL)
Ooo… words that I would associate with Iris… that’s a good question.
Iris always puts me in mind of words like… Joy or Wonder… the feelings you get during a summer storm as the sun is peaking out and you see that rainbow arc across the sky in the most magical way. She’s Gold Dust and Glitter, and laughter in the air. Iris, to me, is the utter elation you feel when you dance in the rain, when the sun is kissing you through grey clouds. (all of this is my own UPG, based on her historical aspects)
I think her epithet of Thaumantia is telling in this, as it means Wondrous One.
For me, I had been searching and searching for a goddess who fit my association with butterflies… but Psyche wasn’t drawing me in, no matter how I tried, researched, and reached out. I was doing some reading and found someone’s UPG about her being found in the iridescence of a butterfly’s wings and it just… struck me… It’s hard to explain. Either way, I look back at it now and I realize that she’s had a subtle influence, I think, on my life.
My mom grew irises in our front yard when I was little, and she always kept suncatchers in the windows and hanging off her car mirror. We’d go chasing after rainbows after it would rain. Butterflies have been a patronus of mine since I can remember. When I began my pagan journey, finding her felt so natural, and she’s led me to others in my worship as well, in the true fashion that a messenger would.

@titanslayer a ajouté votre billet à ses coups de cœur: colourphone: i was gonna sign off to work on...
He might have known who she was. Surely, at this point, Jason must’ve seen a Greek demigod make an Iris-message call at least once. That wasn’t her job as Arcus, that was all Iris-- but Arcus wasn’t much different from her Greek counterpart. More determined, more loyal if possible, a bit more adept at fighting if she needed, but not so different.
The Romans didn’t really know who she was quite like the Greeks. She stayed behind Juno, stayed in her place and never left until commanded. And recently, she had been commanded.
She was dressed in a white toga and leather hunting boots, a strip of pure rainbow wrapped from right shoulder to left hip. A pitcher balanced perfectly on soft blonde hair and a messenger staff, a pole with a metal circle at the top, was held tightly in her hands. It was strange for a goddess to appear at Camp Jupiter, especially with no prewarning, no grand show. Arcus stayed in the shadows.
( Thousands of years after Arcus began to bloody her hands with Hera’s demands, her heart, blooming brightly like the flower named after her, still was weak with guilt. )
It was Iris who had pulled Percy Jackson from Camp Half-Blood, and it was Arcus who had picked the praetor to drag far away from his happy home. The rainbow goddess had wiped their memories, had left them to rot if so be it, had left them to die. Death itself came undone and the littlest harpy returned from the dead and the ancients plowed forth from the ground, but things now were calm-- Now, Arcus could reflect on the horrible thing she had done.
“Jason Grace,” She whispered, barely audible, as she clung to her messenger staff like it were her life force. “Jason--”

Such a good spread!!
I used this spread to talk to Iris - I’ve been feeling a little distant from her lately, but she came through with flying colors (heh).
1. Deity Being Contacted - Temperance - represented by NONE OTHER THAN IRIS. WELP. Cooperation, patience, harmony, balance, and the connection between opposites.
2. What They Want To Do For You - Knight of Swords - Castor and Pollux. Sudden inspiration, turbulent change, impulsiveness, restlessness, new ideas.
Guess she wants to change things up for me... Maybe a new project on the horizon?
3. How They Feel About You - The World - Hermaphroditus. The experience of being whole, living in harmony with oneself, inner healing, discovery, growth, change.
Hmm.... I suppose she feels that I’m on the path to achieving what I’m seeking for? I just have to keep striving for those goals and make her proud. <3
4. General Message - The Hanged Man - Prometheus. Voluntary sacrifice, submission to faith, trusting in the gods, relinquishing control, patience, waiting for a new and better life/outcome.
This pretty much is self-explanatory. Trust Iris and the Gods.
5. A Request From Them - Page of Swords - Zephyrus (IRIS’ CONSORT) Immaturity, youthfulness, independence, reflection of childlike curiosity, learning to temper irritability, new ideas.
Well now. I suppose this would be a request to stop acting so much like a child - learn temperance (hmmmmmmmmmmm) and reflect on the past energies in so much that it will help move me towards the future.
Iris is strong in this reading... I think...
Echoes of harmony, change, growth, faith, and hope are throughout all of these cards, and I think it’s pointing out that yes, Iris is still here... that she’s listening... that she’s the silent hand that guides me.
I just have to listen... and have faith.
Hail Iris Aellopus, Iris Chrysopteron, Iris Thaumantia!
Here’s a simple card spread I developed the other night when I decided to try to reach out to one of the four gods in my pantheon the other night, with absolute success

Hello! i would like a spirit guide reading, my initials are CF and im a scorpio 14/11, i love your work thank u so much!
👋 hello, CF ♏ 🦂 Scorpio,
Your Spirit Guide is Goddess of the 🌈 Rainbow, Messenger of the Gods: 🌿 IRIS
IRIS BIO:
In Greek mythology, Iris (/ˈaɪrɪs/; Greek: Ἶρις, Ancient Greek: [îːris]) is the personification and goddess of the rainbow and messenger of the gods.
According to Hesiod's Theogony, Iris is the daughter of Thaumas and the Oceanid Electra and the sister of the Harpies: Aello and Ocypete. During the Titanomachy, Iris was the messenger of the Olympian gods while her twin sister Arke betrayed the Olympians and became the messenger of the Titans. She is the goddess of the rainbow. She also serves nectar to the goddesses and gods to drink. Zephyrus, who is the god of the west wind is her consort. Their son is Pothos (Nonnus, Dionysiaca). According to the Dionysiaca of Nonnos, Iris' brother is Hydaspes (book XXVI, lines 355-365).
She is also known as one of the goddesses of the sea and the sky. Iris links the gods to humanity. She travels with the speed of wind from one end of the world to the other[1] and into the depths of the sea and the underworld.
Iris had numerous poetic titles and epithets, including chrysopteros (χρυσόπτερος "golden winged"), podas ōkea (πόδας ὠκέα "swift footed") or podēnemos ōkea (ποδήνεμος ὠκέα "wind-swift footed"), roscida ("dewy", Latin), and Thaumantias (Θαυμαντιάς "Daughter of Thaumas, Wondrous One"), aellopus (ἀελλόπους "storm-footed, storm-swift).[2] She also watered the clouds with her pitcher, obtaining the water from the sea.
🦋🌸🦋The hieroglyph for her name originally used meant (female) of flesh, i.e. mortal, and she may simply have represented deified, real, queens. The most commonly used name for this deity, Isis, is a Greek corruption of the Egyptian name; and its pronunciation as 'eye-sis' is a further corruption by English speakers. The true Egyptian pronunciation is unknown, as Egyptian hieroglyphs only recorded consonants, and left out most of the vowels. The Egyptian hieroglyphics for her name are commonly transliterated as jst; as a convenience, Egyptologists pronounce that as ee-set.
IRIS (Iris), a daughter of Thaumas (whence she is called Thaumantias, Virg. Aen. ix. 5) and Electra, and sister of the Harpies. (Hes. Theog. 266, 780; Apollod. i. 2. § 6; Plat. Theaet. p. 155. d; Plut. de Plac. Philos. iii. 5.) In the Homeric poems she appears as the minister of the Olympian gods, who carries messages from Ida to Olympus, from gods to gods, and from gods to men. (Il. xv. 144, xxiv. 78, 95, ii. 787, xviii. 168, Hymn. in Apoll. Del. 102, &c.) In accordance with these functions of Iris, her name is commonly derived from erô eirô; so that Iris would mean "the speaker or messenger:" but it is not impossible that it may be connected with eirô, "I join," whence eirênê ; so that Iris, the goddess of the rainbow, would be the joiner or conciliator, or the messenger of heaven, who restores peace in nature. In the Homeric poems, it is true, Iris does not appear as the goddess of the rainbow, but the rainbow itself is called iris (Il xi. 27, xvii. 547): and this brilliant phenomenon in tile skies, which vanishes as quickly as it appears, was regarded as the swift minister of the gods. Her genealogy too supports the opinion that Iris was originally the personification of the rainbow. In the earlier poets, and even in Theocritus (xvii. 134) and Virgil (Aen. v. 610) Iris appears as a virgin goddess; but according to later writers, she was married to Zephyrus, and became by him the mother of Eros. (Eustath. ad Hom. pp. 391, 555; Plut. Amat. 20.) With regard to her functions, which we have above briefly described, we may further observe, that the Odyssey never mentions Iris, but only Hermes as the messenger of the gods: in the Iliad, on the other hand, she appears most frequently, and on the most different occasions. She is principally engaged in the service of Zeus, but also in that of Hera, and even serves Achilles in calling the winds to his assistance. (Il. xxiii. 199.) She further performs her services not only when commanded, but she sometimes advises and assists of her own accord (iii. 122, xv. 201. xviii. 197. xxiv. 74, &c.). In later poets she appears on the whole in the same capacity as in the Iliad, but she occurs gradually more and more exclusively in the service of Hera, both in the later Greek and Latin poets. (Callim. Hymn. in Del. 232; Virg. Aen. v. 606; Apollon. Rhod. ii. 288, 432; Ov. Met. xiv. 830, &c.) Some poets describe Iris actually as the rainbow itself, but Servius (ad Aen v. 610) states that the rainbow is only the road on which Iris travels, and which therefore appears whenever the goddess wants it, and vanishes when it is no longer needed: and it would seem that this latter notion was the more prevalent one in antiquity. Respecting the worship of Iris very few traces have come down to us, and we only know that the Delians offered to her on the island of Hecate cakes made of wheat and honey and dried figs. (Athen. xiv. p. 645; comp. Müller, Aegin. p. 170.) No statues of Iris have been preserved, but we find her frequently represented on vases and in bas-reliefs, either standing and dressed in a long and wide tunic, over which hangs a light upper garment, with wings attached to her shoulders, and carrying the herald's staff in her left hand; or she appears flying with wings attached to her shoulders and sandals, with the staff and a pitcher in her hands.
AELLOPUS (Aellopous), a surname of Iris, the messenger of the gods, by which she is described as swift-footed like a storm-wind. Homer uses the form aellopos. (Il. 409.)
Source: Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology.
A goddess named “Iris” personified the rainbow in the mythology of ancient Greece. Most works of art depict her either in the form of a beautiful rainbow, or as a lovely maiden. She wore wings on her shoulders and usually carried a pitcher in one hand. Her name combined the Greek words for “messenger” and “the rainbow” to signify her dual role. Some accounts depict her as one of the goddess Hera’s assistants. (Hera carries associations with the sky.)
The ancient Greeks considered Iris the female counterpart of Hermes. She served as a messenger from Mount Olympus. She would use her pitcher to scoop up water from the ocean and carry it into the clouds. Some legends also hold she used her pitcher to collect water from the River Styx, the shadowy river separating the world of human beings from the underworld. Many Greeks viewed Iris as an important link between mortals and the realm of the gods.
The Family Life of Iris
Most sources describe Iris as the daughter of the Oceanid cloud nymph Elektra and Thaumas, a minor god sometimes associated with the sea. She would have been one of the Titan Oceanus’ granddaughters. Her rainbow frequently appeared in the sky over bodies of water.
Legends differ about her life as an adult. Some stories describe her as unmarried and primarily a messenger for the Olympian gods. In other accounts, she fell in love with Zephyros, the god of the West Wind. They had a son named Pothos, who personified Desire.
Iris as a Messenger
Iris would frequently use her pitcher to serve nectar to the gods and goddesses on Mount Olympus. When these major ancient Greek deities needed to send messages to other gods or to human beings, they would sometimes ask Iris to transmit their words. She could travel very quickly from Mount Olympus to Earth, and could even journey quickly into Hades.
Many ancient Greeks considered Iris one of the most beautiful goddesses. The ancient Greeks described her as “swift footed”, suggesting she could respond rapidly to requests. In legends, she carries symbolic associations with messages and communication.
WHAT DOES SHE LOOK LIKE ?
Iris is depicted in ancient Greek vase painting as a beautiful young woman with golden wings, a herald's rod (kerykeion), and sometimes a water-pitcher (oinochoe) in her hand. She was usually depicted standing beside Zeus or Hera, sometimes serving nectar from her jug. As cup-bearer of the gods Iris is often indistinguishable from Hebe in art.
WHAT DOES IRIS MEAN?
The message that rainbows connect us to the immortal can be seen in many mythologies worldwide, including Japanese and Navajo, though each has a different back story and belief. In our lives, we can see the rainbow as being symbolic of a transition, suggesting a potential change from one phase to another.
Rainbow – Other Symbolic Meanings
In general, rainbows are seen as transcending the earthly realm. Rainbows are the physical symbolism of this ascent. It provides us with inspiration to achieve greater heights and seek wisdom from the worlds beyond. The rainbow is the bridge that closes the gap between these two realms and allows for the possibility for communication. It is symbolic of possibility in many other ways as well. The glowing arch appears high above our horizon and can look close and distant at the same time. We are incapable of finding its end.
The rainbow challenges us to be a better version of ourselves. A more inclusive person, a person who seeks a challenge, a person who desires spiritual growth and a connection to the spiritual realm, a person who endures the darkness in pursuit of the light.
Like the rainbow, these things can seem far away and out of our reach. The important thing, though, is that we keep striving for them. The rainbow symbolism is powerful because it reminds us of the endless possibilities. It shows us vast and magical our world is. Rainbows challenge us to confront and embrace our own potential.

Day 3 - Newbie Devotee Challenge
Day 3: Does your deity have any alternate names or epithets? If they do, what are they, and what do they mean? What does the name you call your deity mean?
Lady Iris has several epithets:
Chrysopteron (Χρυσοπτερον) meaning Golden-Winged
Aellopus (Αελλωπος) meaning Storm-Footed
Thaumantia (Θαυμαντιας Θαυμαντος) meaning Thaumas' Daughter, Wondrous One
Podas Ōkea / Podēnemos Ōkea (Πόδας Ώκέα / Ποδήνεμος Ώκέα) meaning Swift Footed or Wind-Swift Footed
She also seems to have a Latin epithet: Roscida meaning Dewy.
The name Iris means rainbow, however, her name is also very close to the Greek word for messenger (eiris).

Iris - messenger goddess of rainbows🌈🌈🌈
Epithets:
Chrysopteron (Golden-winged)
Podas ôkea (Swift-footed)
Podênemos ôkea (Wind swift-footed)
Roscida (Dewy)
Thaumantias or Thaumantos (Daughter of Thaumas, Wondrous One)
Aellopus (Ἀελλόπους) swift-footed like a storm-wind
She was often described as the handmaiden and personal messenger of Hera.
Iris was a goddess of sea and sky. Her father Thaumas “the wondrous” was a marine-god, and her mother Elektra “the amber” a cloud-nymph. She was the embodiment of rainbows and acted as a bridge between the gods and humans.
She was one of the few Olympians who was able to travel to the underworld, like Hermes (who also carries a winged staff). It was Iris’s job to collect water from the river Styx for the swearing solemn oaths. The water would render unconscious for one year any god or goddess who lied.
Traditional offerings to Her include figs, cakes, wheat and honey.
The rainbow is Her main symbol.
Sacred Plant: The flower the Iris was named after her.

Harpyjorna
Svenskt namn: harpyja (plural harpyor/harpyjor) Engelskt namn: harpy (plural harpies/Harpuiai) Grekiskt namn: ἅρπυια Kön: Kvinnor

Harpy
Beware of the sharp winds that travel at alarming speeds through the night. With them come the hounds of Zeus to punish evildoers. Faster than the most fearsome winds and speedier than the most dreaded birds of prey, they Harpies seek to punish those who have wronged their neighbors or the gods themselves. If you see the winged daimone speeding towards you it is already too late. It has come to torture you before sending you to your final fate – Tartarus.
What is a Harpy?
The Harpy is a mythical creature that arose from Greek mythology. It is thought that they were originally wind spirits who, over time, transformed into the fearsome creatures we know today. There are some theories that they were meant to personify the destructive nature of wind. Others, however, see them as a force created to show the power of the gods – specifically Zeus – who they were thought to take orders from.
Harpies
Regardless of their origin, the Harpies were known to inspire fear and terror. There are at least four different Harpies that have been named in literature, though it is though that there are at least six sisters (due to the legends of the daughters of Aiolos).
The Harpies were known to have the power of swift winds and were capable of flying at incredible speeds that could not be matched. They were often sent by Zeus to punish those who were disobedient and were known to torment their victims as they carried them of to Tartarus.
This legend was often used to explain strange and sudden disappearances. When a person disappeared from the earth and could not be found, it was often said that the Harpies were responsible for the misfortune. This was said to be the fate of the daughters of King Pandaerus – which only served to reinforce the fear surrounding these strange creatures. The Harpies were known to be violent and full of wrath. They were also hypothesized as being guardians of the underworld along with monsters like Scylla, Chimera, and the Gorgons.
However, the Harpies did not always punish their victims with a violent trip to Tartarus. They were also known to pester their victims by stealing food and soiling over any remaining scraps. This method of punishment is listed at least twice in literature – once in the story of King Phineus and once in the story of the Trojans.
Home of the Harpies
It is thought that the Harpies could have resided in several areas including the Strophades (plural), near the entrance of Orcus, or a Crete cave. Of these locations, the most popular seems to be Strofades (singular).
Strophades, where Harpies live
It is said that the Harpies came to reside in Strofades when they were discovered to be torturing a blinded King Phineus by stealing his food before he could eat. The Agronauts happened upon the island and saw what was happening. When they spoke to the king, they discovered King Phineus had information that was vital to the Agronaut’s mission and would only give it to them in exchange for rescue from the Harpies.
Two of the Argonauts, Zetes and Calais, chased the Harpies as far as the Strophades before the fastest of the Harpies (Ocypete) collapsed in exhaustion. She prayed to the gods to be rescued from the Argonauts. In response, Iris appeared and stopped Zetes and Calais from killing the Harpies. She promised that king Phineus would never be bothered by the creatures again.
The Argonauts returned to their mission and the Harpies remained on the island. Thus, the islands were named Strofades (meaning Islands of Turning) because the Argonauts were turned away before killing the Harpies.
Physical Appearance
There are two rivaling descriptions of the Harpies. There are some sources that claim that the Harpies were beautiful creatures with the heads of maidens and the body of a bird of prey. They were also portrayed as creatures of great beauty. They were often depicted as being beautiful women with wings (and sometimes claws and talons for feet and hands).
However, rivaling sources claim the Harpies were terrible creatures with ugly features. They were said to have a face that was so terrible it could not even be compared to that of a gargoyle and they were spoken of with disdain. In fact, some writers described them as being ‘human vultures.’
This version of the Harpy (which is the most popular), portrays the Harpies as having faces that are always pale with hunger and especially harsh in their appearance. They are often described as being of ill hygiene and having a foul stench that is unbecoming.
Those who believe the second description of the Harpies sometimes connect these creatures in relation to the Gorgons. It is said that these two groups of sisters were thought to be cousins – which could explain where the myth of a Harpy’s terrible features came from in the beginning.
Mythical Alliances and Connections
Zeus
Mythology often connects the Harpies to Zeus and it was thought that they often did Zeus’ bidding. He is known to have used them to punish King Phineus and the daughters of King Pandarus.
Iris
It is known that Iris (goddess of rainbows and messenger of the gods) is a sister to the Harpies, having also descended from Thaumas and Electra.
Iris, sister to the Harpies
She is also the goddess responsible for ensuring that the lives of the Harpies would be spared when they were chased to the Strofades by the Argonauts.
Thaumas
Thaumas was a sea god who was born of Pontus and Gaia. He was thought to be married to Electra, and to have given birth to the Harpies with her.
Typhon
Typhon was known to be one of the most deadly creatures in Greek mythology. Alternate stories claim that he – not Thaumas – was the father to the Harpies. This version of the story likely comes from the same version that claims that the Harpies were ugly creatures that were cousins of the Gorgons.
Electra
Electra was an Oceanid that was joined in marriage to the sea god Thaumas. Most stories that reference the birth of the Harpies credit her with being the mother.
Famous Harpys in Mythology
Aello
Aello is one of the Harpies who is described by Hesiod in his writings. She is described as a fair maiden by Hesiod, though others who speak of her describe the Harpy as a foul creature.
Her name means ‘storm swift.’ She is also recognized in literature sometimes as ‘Aellopus’ or ‘Nicothoe.’
It is thought that she was the mother to the immortal steeds, Balius and Xanthus. Other sources, however, credit the same offspring to Celaeno or Podarge. Aello is also said to have mothered Xanthus (presumably different horse) and Podarkes – the horses of Athenian Kin Erechtheus. These horses were thought to be fathered by Boreas (the North Wind).
Ocypete
Ocypete is the second Harpy who was depicted in Hesiod’s writings. Her name translates to ‘swift wing’ and she was known to be the fastest of all the Harpies and all winged creatures, though she was driven to exhaustion when chased by the Boreads in the story of the Harpies and King Phineus.
Her name is also sometimes spelled Ocypode (meaning swift foot), or as Ocythoe (meaning swift runner).
Celaeno
Celaeno was also recognized as a Harpy sister. Her name translates to ‘the dark one.’ She is also found as Celeno, Kelaino, and Calaeno.
On the isle of Strophades, the Trojans encountered the Harpies when they slew their cattle and prepared a feast. The Harpies came down from the skies and devoured the feast, soiling any scraps that were left behind so they could not be consumed. Again the Trojans prepared a feast – this time in an enclosed and more protected area – but to their dismay, the Harpies swooped down again and devoured the food. Finally, the Trojans prepared to fight the creatures. They were stopped when Celaeno delivered a prophecy that chilled them to the core. She cursed their mission and told them that their troops would be cursed with famine so great that they would be driven to eat their own tables for their wrongful attack on the Harpies. The Trojans were filled with terror and fled the island with haste.
Podarge
Podarge is another Harpy sister. She is thought to have formed a union with Zephyrus (the god of the West Wind) and was thought to be the mother of Balius and Xanthus (the immortal horses of Achilles).
Interestingly enough, Iris (sister of the Harpies and rainbow goddess) was sometimes referred to as Podarge, making some wonder if there was a deeper connection.
Harpies in Mythology
The Daughters of King Pandareus are Punished
The tale of the Daughters of Pandareus begins when King Pandareus decides to steal a bronze dog from Zeus. When Zeus discovers who is responsible for the theft he kills King Pandareus and his wife, but allows the daughters to live. Aphrodite raises the girls until they reach womanhood and can be married. The goddess traveled to Olympus to ask Zeus for his blessing to arrange marriages for the girls.
While Aphrodite is gone, the Harpies come and steal the girls away and hand them over to the Furies. The girls are tortured and forced into servanthood for the rest of their lives because of their father’s crimes.
King Phineus is Punished
Zeus once granted King Phineus the gift of prophecy. However, when the King uses the gift against the gods, Zeus becomes angry and decides to punish the foolish King.
King Phineus was blinded and made to live on an island. Zeus sent the Harpies to torture the King by stealing away all his food before he had a chance to eat. Any scraps they left behind were soiled, further adding to the plight of the King.
Years later, the Argonauts ventured onto the island and discovered the King. They offered to drive the Harpies away from him in exchange for vital information to help their journey. The King agreed and a trap was set for the Harpies.
The Harpies, however, were very speedy. They flew across the land and managed to make it to the Strofades before collapsing with exhaustion. They prayed to the gods to have mercy on them and their cry was answered. Iris appeared and told the Agronauts to spare the lives of the Harpies. In return, they would no longer torture King Phineus.
The Trojans are Cursed
In the tale of Aeneas and the Trojans, the troops encounter the Harpies on the isle of Strofades. They attempt to have a feast on the island but are interrupted when the Harpies swoop down and devour the entire meal. This happens again and the men decide to fight the Harpies off. For their unwarranted attack (as Strofades belonged to the Harpies) the Harpies cursed the Trojans and caused them to flee in terror.
Origin of the Harpy Myth
The origins of the Harpy myths remain speculative at best. There are many who believe that the Harpy creature was simply created in order to describe the wrathful nature of raging storm winds (which often accompanied lightning). This combination could have been the basis for the creation of the Harpies and their ties with Zeus. As Zeus was thought to be the most powerful god, it makes sense that the ferocity of storms would have been attributed to his will.
It is also possible that the Harpy was simply created to serve as a moral reminder. We see these creatures being associated with punishing those who are guilty of misdeeds and those who have gone against the will of Zeus. Their creation could have arisen from the need to find a way to express the extent to which Zeus’ anger could reach.
Another explanation for the creation of these creatures could have been to serve as a learning tool. Whenever a person disappeared from a society, it was often blamed on the Harpies. This makes it likely that the Harpies were created to explain missing persons cases and serve as a warning of what could happen when a person was not of good virtue or wandered too far on their own.

So in case you all missed the twitter thread today, @aellopus & I have developed the perfect Batman fancast:
John Cho as Batman
Manny Jacinto as Robin
Sandra Oh as Commissioner Gordon
Karen David as Commissioner Gordon’s wife (we also came up with a backstory for her where she’s a lounge singer and Gordon’s former CI)
Rami Malek as Vick Vale, sassy reporter and eye candy/occasional Batman love interest. A running subplot is him trying to publish articles “proving” that Bruce Wayne is Batman that keep getting shut down by his editor
Lucy Liu as his editor, who doesn’t have the heart to break it to him that everyone already knows that Bruce Wayne is Batman
Dichen Lachman as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Batman’s occasional adversary and potentially former friend with benefits but his eternal BFF
Maggie Smith if you can afford her and Peter-Wingfield-as-Methos if you can’t as Alfred
Occasional cameos by Nathaniel Arcand as Superman/Clark Kent/Batman’s endgame romantic interest
Occasional cameos by Jade Ashete as Wonder Woman
Assorted small children/angsty teenagers as the BatFamily/Batman’s “nightlings” (I AM THE NIGHT, cries John Cho, AND THESE ARE MY NIGHTLINGS. In the background, Sandra Oh is trying to keep a straight face and mostly failing)
We did not discuss this but I am all here for Rosario Dawson as Black Canary
We also did not discuss this, but I think it would be hilarious and wonderful if the “Batman theme” music for the show was loosely (but obviously enough that everyone could figure it out by the end of season 1) based on the Darkwing Duck theme
The plot is that John Cho runs around Gotham getting up to wacky crimefighting hijinks, wearing a silly costume, and adopting every kid who comes within a 50 foot radius of him. The CW never goes hungry again.

I love Iris 💛🧡❤️💗💜💙💚
She’s the Hand Maiden and Personal Messenger of Hera.
Thaumas and Elektra are her parents
She also controls Precipitation (sky) and Evaportation (sea)
Iris is considered to have Golden wings, Herald’s Rod, and a Nector-filled Pitcher
An offering she may like is Muffins made with Wheat, Honey, and Dried Figs
I believe it maybe be Roman mythos in which she is named Aellopus?
@enby-witching
Oh and Instagram has some beautiful images for her
Discovering Iris
I’ve recently discovered that Lady Iris is a Goddess of the sea, sky and rainbows. She is also a messenger! These things really resonate with me and it’s pretty cool.
When I was first searching for deities, I looked for sky and air deities. And then ocean because I saw a lot ocean imagery. Recently Ive been seeing rainbows
SO does anyone have info on Iris?? Itd be amazing
#none of this has 100% certainty as I wrote this in my journal awhile ago#iris goddess#iris*#hellenic#hellenic polytheists#gods#theoi#deity#sea deity#hellenic deity#deity communication#deity devotion
