I love the art and I absolutely agree that Diomedes doesn't hate Penelope. It's why I hc that Dio bitching at Ody in TSOA is just part of their public performance and not how he acts in private.
(As for Aegialia, in my Ody POV TSOA fic, she is absolutely delightful. I plan to rewrite When I Left for War at some point, but I find the discrepancy between this version of her and the way Ody talks about her hilarious, so I'm definitely keeping that. Though only for Scryer AU. I also ship OdyDioPen, but I think I can resolve that... maybe 😅)
old OdyDioPen art that I don’t like that much but I want to rant about Diomedes and they way that others write about him because YOU ALL JUST DON’T KNOW HIM LIKE I DO OKAY
okay so I actually despise when people write OdyDio and make Diomedes hate Penelope. I’m (hate reading) re-reading The Song of Achilles and Miller kind of hints at OdyDio a little, but every time Odysseus brings up Penelope, Diomedes gets really bitchy like “shut up we don’t want hear another story about your wife” and it’s more used a representation of how he hates Aegiale but I still don’t like it.
Dio fucking loves Penelope and no one will convince me other wise
there was a lot of time between when Diomedes got to Ithaca (after being exiled from Argos) and when Odysseus gets back. I especially love the idea that Pen and Dio get fake married to detract some of the suitors, or at the very least, Dio hangs around the palace to make sure no one’s bothering her and Telemachus.
…and maybe when Odysseus gets back everybody gets not fake married… idk…

Yk I usually assume that Diomedes and Aegialia's marriage is strictly political and has no feelings involved and she's kind of a bitch, but wouldn't it be sm more angst if they did love each other.
I'm pretty sure they've known each other since childhood. Maybe Aegialeus is aware of that and keeps teasing them about it. They're still children, it's fun.
And then the Epigoni happens.
The war didn't last long, but it's consequences were brutal. When he comes back, Diomedes has been changed by war. But she can still see in him the gentle boy she fell in love with. She teaches him to be soft and gentle again.
They reign together. They fail to have a child yet, but they're young, they still have the time for that.
They love each other. He leaves for Troy but promise he'll come back to her and Argos.
Ten years later, Diomedes wounds Aphrodite and she hurts him back in the worst way possible.
Aegialia wakes up one morning with no love for him anymore. He has never wronged her, and his letters are as sweet as ever, and yet she finds herself yearning for another man's embrace.
As she watches him trying to get home (to their home) and getting pushed back by the guards, she has never felt more hurt. She is heartbroken and yet something keeps her from screaming and throwing herself at his arms (as she has dreamt of for the 10 last years).
He flees the city for good and finally she breaks down, as if until now her feelings were put on "pause". She cries, she screams his name, but it's too late, he left, she chased him from their home.
He will never understand why did she did that. She will never forgive herself for what she did to him.

Diomedes/ Odysseus inspired by ὥς λέοντε δύω διὰ νύκτα μέλαιναν
Text from: σύν μοι μαινομένῳ μαίνεο | go mad with me when I go mad by Aegialia
“The thing is, Diomedes isn’t a person—or, at least, he’s not a person the way everyone else seems to be people. He’s a soldier instead, and even before he was a soldier, he was training to be one, and it feels like there are fundamental things that define other people—desires, instincts, relationships—that simply are not a part of him. He does not react how he should, for good and for ill. He might not be as great a hero as Achilles, but he knows he is a better soldier. He knows how to command men, how to organize a camp, how to scout, how to kill. In exchange, he doesn’t know how to live a normal life. It is a trade-off he’s happy with, more or less. He simply suspects that this is a trade-off that will go poorly for Argos in the long run.
Of course, how he feels, what he wants, none of that really matters. He’ll do his duty, fight this war, rule Argos, and do whatever else Athena asks of him. It doesn’t matter if sometimes, he has a selfish wish that the war would never end. Not really, though, it’s not that he never wants to stop fighting. He just doesn’t want to leave the little world that war creates, the world he was raised to live in, the world he understands. On a night like this, tired of war and diplomacy and just about everything else, he can admit to himself that some part of that desire—and it’s a larger part than he cares to think about—is just the desire for Odysseus to stick around.
Doesn’t matter, of course. One day very soon, if they both survive, Odysseus will go home to his beautiful wife and his beloved island, and the only time he’ll think about Diomedes will be when he tells war stories to his son. Meanwhile, Diomedes will go back to a wife who hates him and a city that barely accepts him as king, and he’ll think about Odysseus every fucking day.”

Okay diomedes during the odyssey fics!! There is a shocking lack of dio fics and post odyssey fics in general so hopefully at least some of these are new to you. If not you have my apologies!
So first up is : https://archiveofourown.org/works/57380605/chapters/145974487
Its bran new. Takes place immediately following the fall of troy and will (I assume) end up with diomedes on itacha
https://archiveofourown.org/works/5791948
Okay it's not letting me link the next one for some reason but it's "come home with me (we're waiting for you)" by vastvastvast. Diopen comforting odysseus post odyssey. Which honestly every fic by them is high key worth reading. Espacially the lastest two. One of my favorite authors!!
wishbone by asteraspera is a 4 part series spanning various parts of the illiad and the odyssey ending with diopenody all in itacha! However it does deal with some pretty heavy topics. Mainly the mental health affect of being a child solider and having undiagnosed schizophrenia
the cost by still_mourning_polites dio and ody kill some sirens together
Nostos by this hazeleyeddemon idk if you read smut so ignore this last one if not but a very sweet hurt/comfort between diopenody where pen and ody are reassuring dio thst of course he still has a place with them.
And not exactly what you're looking for but if you haven't read survival tactics by where_the_crazy_often_go or Two lions at midnight aegialia you sould definitely check them out! They're both excellent dio focused series
And finally if you like cheesy chat fics the secret 25th book(the chat log) by allise is a fun modern au featuring diopenody and odysseus adding his son to the work group chat for shits and giggles.
I have read a few of these and they’re very good but some of them I have not read!! Thank you!!

NAHOR, son of Serug, when he was 29 years old begat Terah, in the 1879th year of the world and the 2083rd year before the birth of Christ. He lived 119 years afterwards, begetting sons and daughters. In total he lived 148 years, and he died. Genesis 11. Around this time the kingdom of the Sicyonians began, whose first king was Aegialeus, for whom Aegialia is named, today called the Peloponnese. Also you punched Aphrodite on the boob?!?
Did I? Perhaps she merely tripped and that's where the bruise is from. >:)
Oh, Athena. This is why you're (one of) my favourites.

@aegialia unironically you fr
Abolish the YA genre. No more books for young adults. At some point in your adolescence, you just go from reading Goodnight Moon to War and Peace. No more stepping stone in the middle. Grow the fuck up.

So I recently finished reading the Iliad and I thought of something
Surely we love to talk about how gay Diomedes is, but have we considered that Ody might embodies everything he desires (either to be or to have) ?
Odysseus is a family man. His wife has stayed faithful after 10 years without news of Ody, and he loves her just as much as he loves his son. Diomedes, however, only married Aegialia to secure his access to the throne. He grew up without father (although he is constantly compared to him), and (by the time of the Trojan war) he had no children.
Odysseus is Athena's favorite, and has probably been for a longer time than Dio. In the Iliad, Athena acts harsher toward Dio (ex. Ep V when he calls for fall back and she immediately calls him unworthy of his father)(ive only read like 3 ep of the Odyssey so maybe later shes just as harsh with him idk)
Odysseus is older, and more respected. See Nestor kicking Diomedes awake and gentle calling Odysseus from outside of his tent. Diomedes may be a king and one of the best warriors (I consider him second to Achilles), the other kings treat him like shit.
Diomedes definitely is admirative of Odysseus (just sees how he talks about him during ep X) , maybe even envious (i have no ex but itd make sense).
And from a shipping pov, I think it has a lot of potential. Admiration turning to attraction.
#i said sm more about it in vm the other night#but this has been sitting in my drafts for days and i still cant remember what else to add#the iliad#odysseus#diomedes#odydio#homer#tagamemnon

Diomedes was such a perfect warrior. Find a hero who had injured two gods in a row (whether or not it was by Athena’s help didn’t matter. The point is she allowed him), find a hero who had Achilles’s strength but with a better temper and without Ajax’s arrogance, find a hero who had been fighting since he was just a child and surviving every war he had been through—and turns out he was the only one. The one and only Diomedes.
Achilles and Patroclus would stay and fight till Troy falls if the Greek army ever retreats? So would Diomedes and Sthenelus. On the battlefield he fought alongside Sthenelus—his brother-in-arms since the war of the Epigoni—but when the night had come, when the battle had ceased…
Odysseus was always the one Diomedes would hang out with.
Absolutely love the dynamics of this pair. So many shenanigans (in other words, war crimes) have they done together—
Like the time when they murdered Palamedes together for Odysseus sought his revenge (which is totally justifiable cuz we all know how Palamedes did shit).
Like the time when they killed the Thracian king Rhesus along with his troops and then stole his horses.
In some versions it’s also Odysseus and Diomedes who went to retrieve Philoctetes from Lemnos and Neoptolemus from Skyros.
And…ah yes, the Palladium… *smirks*
Pseudo-Apollodorus’s Epitome (5.13) simply has Odysseus disguised as a beggar and stolen the Palladium with the help of Helen, then fought his way to the ships with the aid of Diomedes.
Conon’s Narrations (summarized by Photius in his Bibliotheca, codex 186.34), however, provides the version where Odysseus and Diomedes sneaked into the city of Troy to steal the Palladium together but they both had their little schemes in mind, so in the end they sorta turned against each other (Odysseus wanted to kill Diomedes and bring the Palladium back by himself but Diomedes stopped him and in turns drove him along beating his back with the flat of his sword).
After the war, while Odysseus was wandering on the sea, Diomedes reached home safely but was driven out from Argos by his wife Aegialia (either by Nauplius’s scheme or by Aphrodite’s corruption…in either case she cheated on Diomedes). He wandered all the way to Italy but there Aphrodite punished him by turning his comrades into birds (for that reason there’s a family of albatrosses called Diomedeïdae). He founded several cities in Italy (the most famous of which was Argyripa) where he reigned over as a king.
Athena had once promised Tydeus—Diomedes’s father—that she would grant him immortality. But as Tydeus was wounded during the war against Thebes and dying, Athena came, and found him eating his enemy Melanippus’s brain. Feeling disgusted, Athena chose to leave him perishing, but she did grant Diomedes the apotheosis she promised to his father. So…yeah, Diomedes is a god now. Wonderful.
I feel like this may be opening a can of worms based on your page but uhh… who is Diomedes???
Was he a soldier in the Trojan War that Odysseus fought with that was gay for Ody? Lol
Ahahaha, no worries, I wasn’t aware of who he was either until I joined the EPIC Writing Server
So in short (as much as I know about him):
We need to go back until his father, Tydeus, actually. Tydeus was one of the Seven against Thebes, favored by Athena, and like many of that seven he lost his life in that war when Diomedes was (most popularly) 4 years old. Diomedes vowed revenge, and around the age of 14 he gathered the sons of the Seven against Thebes, they became the Epigoni (there is a lost epic about this story, why did it get lost…😭) and successfully conquered Thebes.
Before or after the Epigoni (don’t try to set up a timeline in Greek myth) he became the king of the city Argos. HOWEVER, he spent more time at wars then at home (with his wife Aegialia), or at least that’s thought.
Yes, he went to Troy to fight (whether because he was bound by the oath, or just because of fame and glory is unclear). He is said to be one of the youngest warriors but with the most experience, he was the third best among the Greeks, mostly because of Tydeus Athena favors Diomedes as well (she’s always so strict with him, like, c’mon Athena, he’s doing his best), which kinda connects him to Odysseus. If you read the Iliad, 95% of the time they are together. They go on a night mission together to steal horses, when the Trojans break through their defence and Diomedes gets shot in the foot, Odysseus covers him until he retreats, on another mission near the end of the war they steal the Palladium together and Odysseus betrays him and-
Ah… Too many stories for one blog… If anyone wants to share more, please feel free. (I’m looking at you @still-mourning-polites /lh 😂)
But here, this is one reason they are shipped like heck. I couldn’t decide, which translation to use, so here’s Robert Fagles’ (first pic) and Emily Wilson’s (second pic) of the Iliad, Book 10, when Diomedes has to choose who will accompany him on the mission

I’M SO PROUD OF UR REDEMPTION ARC yeah tho man I feel like the entire iliad tag would be a much better place if it could commonly become accepted that just about everyone is in some form or another an asshole (save for helen, cass and andromache). I can’t with that trait getting pushed off (and exaggerated) almost entirely onto agamemnon (and sometimes menelaus) and then in the process everything else that’s interesting about their characters is lost :,| like i said in the original post it’s not like I’m ‘no fun allowed’ with it, some of the jokes are funny but that’s literally ALL I ever see for them and it’s. tiring. same with any discussion about clytemnestra, just in reverse. i wanna hear more people talk about how she is both sympathetic but also far from flawless, and that the whole iphigenia/oresteia storyline is not nearly as Good Person VS Evil Person as people make it seem. same with any posts with achilles and agamemnon. READ PAST BOOK ONE, PEOPLE (i’m sorry but u got me Started again) headcanons are all fine and good but it worries me that a lot of the newer fans take a lot of this stuff as canon and then we keep getting the same stuff parroted, wash rinse repeat. every time i see someone break out of that mold it adds an extra year to my life tbh, so bless u for these comments. i am glowing.
