FEMSLASH FEBRUARY 2021 #14: in which Cameron and Joanie have some brunch
[CN: descriptions of food/prep]
.
.
.
When Joanie came home in April of 1998 for her annual spring trip back to the states, Cameron had just begun her ’sabbatical.’ For much of that year, Cameron was focused on finally, fully settling in at Donna’s house (along with Licorice, who was now almost a year old) and on resting before starting work on a new game, and had taken a sudden interest in homemaking, the histories of domestic and agricultural labor, and most shockingly to Joanie, getting up in the actual morning, and at the same time every day.
Once content to practically live in her pajamas when she wasn’t going anywhere, Cameron now got up at 9:30 on most weekdays, went downstairs and put on some coffee, made sure that the cat’s water and dry food bowls were full, and then went out to check on the garden and enjoy a few minutes of sunlight. After cereal and coffee, she would go back upstairs to do some morning journaling, which she’d been inspired to try after Donna added some collections by Mary Oliver and Emily Dickinson to their home library. Cameron didn’t think of herself as a very eloquent or even fluid writer, but she still hunkered down in the bedroom arm chair by the window and happily scribbled down notes on how she’d slept and if she’d any dreams, her plants and her on-going kitchen projects, recipes and restaurants she and Donna had tried, movies, tv shows, books, and articles she’d been looking at, Licorice’s favorite toys and treats, and conversations that she’d had with her growing circle of internet friends. And then she would shower, get dressed, and go back downstairs. Most mornings, Cameron was doing chores and searching for home and kitchen improvement projects she could do by 10:15.
Joanie, who had only witnessed any of this because she was jetlagged for the first few days she was back in California, had gone back to staying up till 3 am and sleeping until noon as soon as she was physically able to do so. When she did finally make it downstairs, Cameron was in the kitchen, radio on, her books and notepads and mugs cluttering the island. Joanie would pour herself a large bowl of whatever cereal Cameron had purchased that week, and enjoy it in front of the tv, leaving Cameron to do her work. It was lonely, and it felt a little like being with a stranger, now that Cameron was her mother’s live-in girlfriend, and Joanie was something of a prodigal daughter, and an expatriate.
Ten days into her visit, Joanie came downstairs and found Cameron sitting at the island with some coffee. There were no books, just a large bowl of freshly rinsed grapes, and a basket of towels that were still warm from the dryer. “Want some brunch?” Cameron offered.
“Sure,” Joanie said. “I mean, yes. That would be nice.”
Cameron smiled, got up, and went around the island, into the kitchen, and to the refrigerator. Joanie sat down, and Licorice, seemingly able to sense that food was about to be prepared, trotted over from the big window that looked out on the pool, and sprang up on to the stool next to Joanie’s. She sat up on her hind legs, and looked expectantly into the kitchen.
Joanie leaned over to her. “Come here often?” When Licorice didn’t respond, Joanie nodded, “You’re right, that’s a terrible and cliché line.”
Cameron set a mug of coffee and carton of creamer in front of Joanie, and pushed the bowl of grapes toward her, and then went back to the stove, where her favorite frying pan was warming up.
“So my mom has like, fully domesticated you, huh?” Joanie said, reaching for the mug and the creamer.
Cameron, who was beating their eggs, shrugged gently. “It’s nice to have a home after living out of a duffel bag for your entire adult life. It seems silly, at first, but then, you realize that it isn’t.” Setting down the bowl, Cameron said, “Tell you what: in a few years when you find something more permanent, after a few more years of bouncing back and forth between cities and hostels and capsule hotels, I’ll ask you how you feel about it?”
Sipping her coffee, Joanie agreed, “Deal.” She put down her mug, and timidly, asked Cameron, “Do you ever wonder what Tori Lowman might say if she could see you playing house for real, with my mom?”
Cameron shook her head as she whisked the eggs into her now warm pan. “You’re really never gonna let me live that down, are you?”
The warmth in Cameron’s voice reminded Joanie that she was home, even if Northern California wasn’t her home anymore. “Back in Dallas,” Joanie started, “my only real friend was this girl named Heather. I think that maybe she was my Tori Loman.”
The eggs were just starting to set, so Cameron turned down the heat, and used her favorite spatula to pull the egg mixture in, toward the center of the pan. Over her shoulder, she said, “…oh?”
Joanie sighed quietly, relieved by this endearingly momish response. “She was the only person at school that I really liked. She had long black hair, and she was a little taller than I was, and she was broader than I was too. We used to go down to this creek and ride our bikes after school. And I just, I wanted to do that every day. Like, for the rest of time.”
Cameron grinned as she laid some strips of bacon in the pan. “That sounds about right.”
“She used to take these dance classes,” Joanie continued. “I kind of hated dancing, but I wanted to sign up for her classes, until I realized that they were like, these special Native American dance classes? Her family was Apache, and they used to go to these special dance competitions and tribal events on the weekends. I wanted to go to one of them. I think if I’d asked my mom, she probably would have tried to work something out. But I never did, I was too scared?”
Still listening, and now thinking, Cameron pulled two plates out of the dishwasher. She spooned the eggs and bacon onto their plates, and then reached for the english muffin halves she’d toasted, and placed them carefully on the side. She picked up the plates, turned back to Joanie, and placed them down on the island. She rested her hands on the island, and then, shrewdly, said, “You were afraid that you’d have fun, and that your crush on her would get worse. Or harder to ignore?”
Joanie couldn’t believe what a relief it was to hear someone else say it, get it.
Licorice, front paws on the counter, strained to get nearer to the plates. “No, you already ate,” Cameron said. She grabbed a grape from the bowl and rolled it toward Licorice, who was transfixed. She batted it off the table, and jumped down to the floor to play with it. Crisis averted, Cameron grabbed some forks from the drawer, and then went around the island, handed Joanie a fork, and sat down next to her, taking Licorice’s seat.
Joanie picked up half of her english muffin and took a large bite out of it. She chewed thoughtfully, and then picked up her fork. She swallowed, and then said, “Heather seemed all well-behaved and agreeable, but she wasn’t really. She had a bb gun, and she would practice shooting at guns and bottles, and she wanted to learn archery, and how to throw knives. She liked Heart and Led Zeppelin, they were her dad and her mom’s favorite bands. She had older brothers, and she knew all these dirty jokes because of them and she would tell them and I would always laugh at them even though we didn’t really know what they meant? She also liked to steal her brothers’ clothes and wear them when we rode bikes. And she would make me race her even when I said I didn’t feel like it, and she would chase bullies, and she would be mean to them. Like, really mean. And she would curse them, like she would say she was putting an ‘Indian curse’ on them.” She paused to eat some of her food, which must have been getting cold, and then finally, she said, “I wish I’d tried to talk to her after we moved to California. I figured we’d never talk again, and I thought that maybe that would be better. I should’ve at least tried to be her pen pal though, or something.”
Cameron, who had finished most of her brunch while listening to Joanie, picked up her mug and drank some of her coffee. And then, she said, “Tori Loman had curly, frizzy black hair that she would say she didn’t like, but I never thought there was anything wrong with it. I liked it. She liked arts and crafts and coloring and making snacks with her mom. Her favorite snack was hot chocolate and cinnamon sugar toast. I wish I could be pen pals or something with her, too,” she said, before taking another sip of her coffee.
Joanie ate the last of her eggs and bacon, and then she said, “When I first moved to Thailand, I met this girl named Sawyer, at the hostel. But I didn’t see her for a while, so we didn’t get a chance to really talk, but then one day I went out with this guy I had met, an Italian, from Florence, who turned out to be pushy and annoying and he followed me to my room and he kept trying to get me to invite him into my room even though I told him I was ready to go to bed, and Sawyer came out into the hallway and started, like, hassling him? Mostly in English but then she was shouting him down in Italian? And she finally got him to leave, and then we started talking. I asked her if she spoke Italian and she said no, but that ‘You’re bothering her, leave her alone’ is one of the first things she learns how to say whenever she goes anywhere, and that she knows how to say it in like, eight different languages?” Smiling broadly, Joanie finished, “And that was kind of just that. We’ve been partners in crime ever since. She was always going on day trips and weekend trips to different cities and islands outside of Bangkok, and she would invite me every time, and I would go with her as often as I could. We would try to rent bikes wherever we went, when we could. And after a while it felt like, I could do that for the rest of time. With her.”
Cameron leaned back in her chair. “In romcoms, they call that a ‘meet cute’.”
Joanie blushed. “Since when do you watch romcoms?”
“I don’t! But that’s what I’ve heard, I saw something about it on an internet message board,” Cameron said quickly. She picked up her plate, and then took Joanie’s, and walked them over to the kitchen counter near the dishwasher. She grabbed the coffee pot, and returned to her mug to refill it. “So is Sawyer…does she have a Tori Loman in her past, somewhere?”
Joanie pushed her mug toward Cameron’s, and as she added the rest of the coffee to it, Joanie said, “If I understand correctly, she has a few Tori Lomans.”
“Ah. I see,” Cameron said. She returned the pot to the coffee maker, and then went back to her seat.
Staring down into her coffee, Joanie said, “I miss her. I’m glad I’m here. Like, really glad I’m here. Not everyone I’ve met has a home to go back to, you know? I wish that she could be here, though. I wish you and mom could meet her.”
Cameron cackled. “Your mother would lose her mind if you brought someone, anyone home for her to meet, Jesus. It’d be like the holidays, when she gets that vibe like she’s planning some kind of tactical land invasion, it would be peak Donna Emerson.” Tapping her mug excitedly with a nail, Cameron grinned, “It will drive me nuts. I can’t wait.”
Slouching in her seat, Joanie sighed, “I feel like you’ll probably be waiting for a while. I feel like she would like to, but I can’t imagine it working out.” Joanie started to fiddle idly with her hair, wrapping the ends of it around her finger, and unwinding it. “Our lives are just like, so far removed from everything here? Which, that’s kind of the point, it’s okay. But she’s like, really different, about home. Or ‘home,’ or whatever,” she said, making air quotes with her fingers. “I’m waiting to go home, but like, in a good way, if that makes sense? I’m know I’m not supposed to yet, but I look for signs, and I know it will happen eventually. I’ll figure out what I’m supposed to do, and someday I’ll figure out how to do that here. But I don’t think Sawyer thinks that way, she’s always looking for the next adventure. Which is why I love her. But I don’t think she’ll see coming here as an adventure.”
Gently, Cameron said, “Joanie….” She kicked the foot of her stool playfully. “When I was living in Japan, do you ever think I felt like I’d wind up here? With you mom?”
“Probably not, I guess,” Joanie said, smiling tentatively.
“We dwell in possibility,” Cameron said, getting up and out of her seat again as she paraphrased Emily Dickinson. “Come on, let’s go find something fun to do,” she grabbed her mug.”You can tell me more about Sawyer, which I can use to make fun of you whenever you bring up Tori Loman.”
Joanie thought about arguing, but then she got up, grabbed her coffee, and followed Cameron.

Thai bar girls move online for new income
With Thailand's infamous red light districts dimmed, an untold number of Thai bar workers are out of work and searching for new sources of income. Some like Cherry, who would earn thousands of dollars jetting around Asia for clients, have had to resort to adult live-streaming sites to pay the bills. Cherry teases the audience for three or four long minutes until at least 30 men have joined her chat room. Only then are the first buttons undone as explicit requests for different poses pour in and her PayPal wallet starts to fill up. The 29-year-old is one of an untold number of Thai sex workers – the lowest estimates say around 300,000 – who have found themselves searching for alternative sources of income as custom has dried up in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. With the infamous red light districts of Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket dimmed since the end of March, many have returned to their home provinces to work the fields or sell food as they wait for the go-go bars and massage parlours to spring back to life and the international tourists to return. Others like Cherry, who is transgender, have gone online to make the most of a world closed by the pandemic but connected by the internet – and the increasingly open attitudes to sex that can be expressed online. https://bangkokjack.com/2018/11/04/truth-about-thai-prostitutes/ From married Iranians in Bangkok to Malaysians in Kuala Lumpur and Japanese businessmen in Tokyo – whether straight, gay, bored or curious, Cherry says she has been with them all. But then the pandemic happened – and with all flights in and out of Thailand grounded – Cherry had nowhere to go. So with debts to pay but no income or government assistance, she turned to technology for help. “I found an amateur sex cam website where men pay for you to entertain them,” she said, giving a nickname because of the stigma tied to her work. “It looked like easy money.” Cat ears, pouts and poses Several times a week Cherry puts on make-up and cosplay gear – cat ears are a fans’ favourite – and logs on to the site for an hour. It takes a few moments to corral the first users to her private room, each paying US$10 for the hour but able to personalise their fantasy with a top-up payment. “My target is US$500 in that hour. If I have 20 visitors, I’ll keep them waiting until 30 join … then I start the show.” Most of the requests she gets revolve around pouts, poses and sex toys, she says, from men who are “bored of porn or are married and never see a ‘ladyboy’”.
‘Cherry’ looks out of an apartment window at a Bangkok street. Photo: Vijitra Duangdee “They want a real-time experience,” she said. “They pay to feel in ‘control’ … but it never lasts more than a few minutes.” There are extreme requests too, but Cherry says she doesn’t do “the sick stuff”. Technological innovation has transformed sex work in recent years, bringing a constellation of clients within easy reach through online brokers, apps and social media. Transgender sex workers lean especially heavily on technology, Cherry says, because their clients often require high levels of discretion – particularly if they are married, ostensibly straight or living in countries with strict laws governing morality and gender.
Bangkok’s red light districts have been closed for months in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Photo: EPA So far, her two-month foray into adult live-streaming has netted her around 80,000 baht (US$2,500) after the website’s fees are deducted. But before the pandemic, Cherry says cash was plentiful for those willing to take risks. She tells of how a Thai friend of hers was paid more than US$15,000 to fly to a Gulf state to be an escort for a wealthy local man for a few days – a liaison sparked over an Instagram post. “Technology has brought new opportunities, we can communicate directly with customers anywhere in the world,” she said. No-go bars? Such opportunities to make a living are sorely needed. Thailand has reported just 3,402 coronavirus cases and 57 deaths since January, but the economy has taken a battering and is only now easing out of a prolonged shutdown. Earlier this month, the country’s National Economic and Social Development Council forecast the economy may shrink as much as 6 per cent this year, with the pandemic damaging traditional drivers such as tourism and trade. Many freelance workers are getting US$160 per month in government relief, but this excludes sex workers who are often shunned in Thailand’s conservative society and routinely denigrated as karee (which roughly translates as “sluts”). Food for distribution to unemployed sex workers is loaded in to a van by members of SWING, an organisation that supports sex workers, in Bangkok earlier this month. Photo: EPA They also operate illegally, thanks in part to the Prevention and Suppression of Prostitution Act introduced in 1996 which acts as “a wall” denying sex workers their rights, according to Thantha Laovilawanyakul of the Empower Foundation, which campaigns for the decriminalisation of sex work. Yet sex work is a pillar of Thailand’s economy. Before the pandemic, millions of tourists filled the country’s bars, brothels and massage parlours, with the money made being funnelled back to poor provinces where jobs and education are limited. Chalidaporn Songsamphan, a political-science professor and president of SWING – an organisation the supports sex workers – said in a recent live-stream that they are the “elephant in the room” for Thailand. “People can see it, but they don’t want to discuss it,” she said. “After Covid-19 maybe Thai people … the state’s power holders … should think clearly about the position of sex work because it’s so important for the economy.” With bars and clubs closed indefinitely and go-go dancing seemingly a no-go under the “new normal” of social distancing, major question marks hang over the future of Thailand’s legendary nighttime economy. Yet in uncertain times the world’s oldest profession is adapting fast. One Bangkok escort agency contacted for this article said its call girls are “tested regularly” for Covid-19, while another sex worker said pay-per-view live sex shows are flourishing in invite-only groups on the popular messaging app Line. Even Cherry – who says she enjoys entertaining clients online and has fun getting to know their secrets, sexual preferences and separating out the “curious” from those just craving companionship – recognises that the coronavirus crisis could change sex work forever. “I don’t think it will ever be the same again,” she said. - SCMP Read the full article

First days in Thailand
Starting Saturday January 21 I began a trip of a lifetime. Flying from Jax to jfk to Qatar to Bangkok, I was worn out. Made it to the hotel with the airport pickup and two South African guys who are doing the same program I am. Breakfast had noodles and the best pineapple I’ve had yet. We drove in 5 vans to get to the coastal city of Hua Hin. I’m staying in a house that has four other share rooms. My roommate is Chantay she is from Utah. There’s 28 of us total so quite a big group. We’ve got people from Australia and England and South Africa and Canada and the United States. I love this collection of people. It’s interesting with this new aspect of adults who can drink. There’s tattoos and piercings and jolly good fun. Our apartment/ house in Hua Hin is literally two blocks from the beach! We all went for a swim after our initial meetings. I could definitely get used to a swim every day after lessons. In the evening we all gathered to go to the night market. This gigantic market with hundreds of food and clothing and toy stalls down and avenue of a road probably 10 blocks wide. There is everything. I’m serious. Everything you could think of, it’s there. We stopped at a restaurant (looking for a bar) and it was empty so our group sat down but everyone brought their own been and we spent about 10$.
Speaking of spending lemme tell you how cheap things are. 100 bhat is roughly 4$ and good food can be only 60 b. Sooo cheap.
Four of the girls and I got henna tattoo on our hands. We also crammed all 25 of us on a truck taxi thing and it was a wild ride around town. Can’t sleep through the night but there a lot of new bird calls that I don’t recognize that wake me. Not mad, just interested. It’s going to be day two here and we are going to a temple and a dog reserve :)

If you’re planning a trip to Thailand, don’t miss the ancient capital city of Ayutthaya and the spectacular Ayutthaya . It’s easy to do an Ayutthaya day trip from Bangkok or spend a few nights to get the full experience. Read on to find out how to do it and what to see when you get there.
What’s in our guide to the Ayutthaya Temples?
1. 3. 5. 7. 9.
Ayutthaya is one of the world’s most impressive ancient temple complexes.
The ruins of the old city and the Ayutthaya are preserved in the Ayutthaya Historical Park which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Wandering around the site and admiring the countless stupas (conical towers called chedi in Thai), statues of Buddha, and gigantic monasteries, gives you an idea of the city’s past glory days — and offers endless opportunities for amazing photos of your visit.
Though we’ve been to many incredible — like Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Prambanan Temple in Indonesia, Karnak in Egypt, and Stonehenge — both Jane and I loved the proliferation of Buddha statues we found here.
Fun fact: Ayutthaya was named after the Indian holy city of Ayodhya, which was the birthplace and seat of Rama, an important Hindu god (an avatar of Lord Vishnu). Since 1782, Thai kings have all been known as King Rama. The current king is Rama X.

Visiting The Ayutthaya Temples
Also don’t miss these posts:
2 Days in Bangkok? Here’s your perfect itinerary → Is a self-guided cycle tour in Thailand right for you? → Here’s your complete Thailand itinerary for 2 weeks →
We recommend that the first thing you do in Ayutthaya is to head to the Tourist Office and pick up a free map of the site. They also have an exhibit detailing the history of the city if that’s your sort of thing.
Here are the we recommend you find on that tourist map!
This Buddha head is the most famous spot in Ayutthaya.
The Chedi at Wat Phra Si Sanphet
This is the biggest temple in Ayutthaya. The first palace built at Ayutthaya — the Grand Palace of Ayutthaya — was located where the ruins of Wat Phra Si Sanphet sit today. It is now best known for the three chedi which house the remains of King Borommatrailokanat, King Borommarachathirat III, and King Ramathibodi II.
Wat Phra Ram
The monastery at Wat Phra Ram was constructed on the cremation site of the first Ayutthayan monarch, King Ramathibodi I (r. 1351-1369), hence its name. It has a majestic prang (or tall tower) that would have once been covered in ornate carvings.
Wat Ratchaburana
Don’t miss the grand hall at Wat Ratchaburana. This temple was built by King Boromratchathirat II after both his brothers died on this site, killing each other during a fight to see who would claim the throne. From the great hall you have a spectacular view of the prang that was the centrepiece of the temple compound.
The prang has undergone restoration and you can see Garuda (the Hindu Eagle God) swooping down from it. Four chedi surround the main prang. The prang’s crypt is accessible by steep stairs and is home to once glorious, now faded, frescoes.
Be prepared to do a lot of looking up at soaring prang and chedi!
Wat Chaiwattaranaram
This impressive temple has a 35m–high central prang (Prang Prathan) which symbolises the centre of the world. It is surrounded by four smaller prang representing the four continents. It is (often) possible to climb the steep stairs to the top of the prang for a stunning view across the city and seemingly endless Ayutthaya .
Wat Chaiwatthanaram sits on the west bank of the Chao Phraya river, not on the island that makes up the UNESCO site of ancient Ayutthaya. Nonetheless it is one of Ayutthaya’s most stunning and best known .
Wat Phutthai Sawan
If you’ve been researching your trip to Ayutthaya, you’ve likely come across pictures of a large reclining Buddha. One of those Buddhas lives here at Wat Putthai Sawan, a temple on the banks of the Chao Phraya river that is still in use.
(Make sure you follow
Just another impressive ruin at the Ayutthaya Temples.
Wat Thammikarat
This is an active monastery just outside the official Ayutthaya Historical Park. Wat Thammikarat has been restored several times, however many of the architectural structures remain as ruins, including a large bell-shaped chedi with an octagonal base.
Wat Maheyong
We’re including this temple because it is included on the 6-temple entrance ticket (see the
It’s a sad fact that once the Buddha statues all had heads, until they were stolen by pillagers and private collectors.
The ancient statues of Buddha were too big and heavy for pillagers to carry away, so they lopped off the heads and sold them to private collectors and museums around the world. Here at Ayutthaya you will see almost endless rows of headless Buddha statues.
will sort you out with a bicycle for either a small fee or no extra charge. Definitely take advantage of this as it can be quite hot during the day, and making your breeze to cool off as you move between the Ayutthaya will ensue you can see a few extra during your visit.
If you like bikes, check out the Grasshopper Adventures bicycle Ayutthaya day tour from Bangkok.
long pants
all day.
Don’t point at people or at Buddha. Pointing is considered rude in Thailand. Instead, you can gesture with your whole hand with your fingers together.
These young monks all hid their bare feet when our guide brought us into this temple in Thoen, Thailand.
Hide your soles. You must remove your shoes before entering a working temple but be sure that you don’t show the soles of your feet in the temple (or anywhere). This is considered very rude in Thai culture.
Respect the Buddha statues. Of course, you should never climb on or sit next to a Buddha statue, nor should your rowdy gang of kids. Technically, you should never turn your back on the Buddha (kind of like the queen) but you may have trouble following this one in Ayutthaya, where there are thousands of Buddha statues.
Chao Phrom Market
An outdoor and mostly covered market, Chao Phrom is on the edge of the island that makes up ancient Ayutthaya. If you haven’t been to a Thai market, definitely go and pick up some snacks, see how locals shop, and take some pictures (always ask if you’re taking pictures of people).
Million Toys Museum
The name kind of says it all! Krirk Yoonpan’s Million Toys Museum has, if not a million, a shed load (or museum load) of toys. One man’s passion for toys is your chance to feel like a kid again. Wander around and check out the tin robots, antique dolls, and life-size Japanese superheroes.
The Million Toys Museum is closed on Mondays and open 9am–4pm every other day, except public holidays and official holidays. It is located on the edge of ancient Ayutthaya city. Tickets cost 50 Baht for adults and 20 Baht for children.
Take a bike ride to the outskirts of Ayutthaya for a great cultural experience.
Bang Lan Night Market
Street food vendors line the street at this Ayutthaya night market. You can sit with the locals and enjoy delicious, freshly prepared, and super inexpensive food. We highly recommend this if you’re staying in Ayutthaya for the night. Don’t get there too late though as it tends to shut down around 9pm.
The Floating Market
Khlong Sra Bua Floating Market is really touristy and you can probably skip it. If you’re spending time in South East Asia you’ll have other opportunities to visit much more authentic floating markets. But lots of people seem to enjoy it, so if it sounds interesting to you, check it out.
The Crush (phajaan in Thai)? This is the horrific torture elephants must go through to become docile enough to be used in tourist settings.
When we visited Ayutthaya last, we saw tourists sitting on platforms propped on the back of elephants. This is the ABSOLUTE worst way you can ride an elephant as it causes their spines to be permanently damaged. If you MUST ride an elephant (and there is no situation in which this would be the case) it is only acceptable to sit on the elephant’s neck. Now you know, so no excuses.
Please don’t ride elephants. These are wild animals whose spines were not designed to carry baskets and bunches of humans.
Do not visit the Elephantstay (also known as the Royal Elephant Kraal and Village). It’s just animal cruelty disguised as traditional entertainment.
on the official Thai Railway website. There is a drop-down menu at the top where you can change the language to English.
Head to Bangkok Hua Lamphong Railway Station, the main railway station in Bangkok, and from there you can catch one of the regular trains to Ayutthaya. The journey time ranges from 80 minutes to 120 minutes or more depending on the train you take (this being Southeast Asia you need to get used to things taking longer than you’re told they will).
Get to Hua Lamphong Railway Station a little early. It is big and confusing, so you might need a little extra time to get your ticket and find your train.
You have a few options for trains and there are at least two trains each hour heading from Bangkok to Ayutthaya. You can choose between Special Express, Express, and Rapid trains throughout the day, plus the regular trains (which take a little longer but cost a lot less).
Ticket cost: Second-class seats with A/C cost 245-345 Baht (~7 USD), while third class is just 15-20 Baht (~0.70 USD). In third class, the windows generally open and you can enjoy the breeze on the relatively short journey to Ayutthaya.
No reservation is necessary if you are planning to take the regular train. You can just turn up at the train station, buy a ticket and hop on.
A reservation is necessary on the express trains, but these only sold on the day of at the station or online at Thai Railway Tickets a maximum of one day ahead.
The Ayutthaya railway station is not on the island of ancient Ayutthaya. It is just across the river and a short ferry ride away. Walk across the main road from the station and down the small street to the river. Ferry boats run every few minutes and cost 5 Baht.
Pro tip: If you’re headed north to Chiang Mai (definitely worth a visit if you have time) you can stop off in Ayutthaya on the way, as trains from Bangkok to Chiang Mai stop at Ayutthaya.
Ayutthaya even has a left luggage office on the platform signed “Cloak Room” where you can store your luggage for 10 Baht while you explore the .
Luang Chumni Village
Rating 8.7, $28 double room, breakfast included
It wasn’t just the breakfast we loved at Luang Chumni Village! Though that was great too.
This is where we stayed when we visited Ayutthaya — and we loved it. Family run, authentic wooden Thai houses, and right in the middle of the ancient city, we are sure you’ll love it here! They have hammocks, sun loungers, and even a spot where you can practice yoga! Bicycle rental fee is only 50 Baht (~$1.60 USD) per bike per day.
Baan Luang Harn
Rating 9.2, $35 bungalow, breakfast included
This is another super cute family-owned guest house. The cabins here are so adorable and include a private veranda. The property sits on a lake where you can sit and watch the wildlife as you recover from your day exploring the . The staff are friendly and helpful and the breakfast is reportedly amazing. They will also arrange bicycles for you for a small daily rental fee.
Baan Thai House
Rating 9.2, $66 garden view villa, breakfast included
Baan Thai House offers a relaxing hideaway just outside the ancient city. Their Thai-style villas feature balconies with garden or lake views and there is a spa on the property where you ca arrange a massage to work out your sore muscles after wandering around the . An outdoor pool is available to take a relaxing swim in.
While it is located outside the ancient city, it is just 100 m from the floating market, and they provide free use of bicycles so you can easily ride the short distance to the . If you’re tired at the end of your day and can’t muster the energy to head out for dinner in the evening, they have a restaurant serving a range of local and Western dishes.

The Rising Popularity of Sex Toys in Bangkok: Embracing Pleasure and Empowerment
Bangkok, the vibrant capital city of Thailand, is known for its bustling markets, cultural landmarks, and vibrant nightlife. However, there is a growing phenomenon that has been captivating both locals and tourists alike - the increasing popularity of sex toys. In this article, we will explore why sex toys have become so important in Bangkok, shedding light on the societal shifts towards sexual liberation, pleasure, and empowerment.
1. Breaking Taboos and Promoting Sexual Freedom:
Bangkok is a city that embraces diversity and challenges traditional norms. The rise of sex toys reflects a broader movement towards breaking taboos surrounding sex. As people become more open-minded and progressive, they are seeking new ways to explore their sexuality and satisfy their desires. Sex toys provide individuals with a safe and pleasurable avenue to experiment, enhancing both their solo and partnered experiences.
2. Promoting Sexual Health and Wellness:
The prominence of sex toys in Bangkok also stems from a growing awareness of the importance of sexual health and wellness. These products are not solely about pleasure; they can also be used for therapeutic purposes, aiding in stress relief, improving sleep quality, and enhancing overall well-being. As individuals prioritize self-care and holistic approaches to health, sex toys have emerged as valuable tools for self-exploration and self-expression.
3. Empowering Women and Promoting Gender Equality:
In Bangkok, the demand for sex toys has been greatly influenced by the rise of feminism and the pursuit of gender equality. Women are increasingly taking control of their sexuality, seeking pleasure on their terms, and embracing their desires without shame. Adult toys offer a unique opportunity for women to explore their bodies, discover what brings them pleasure, and communicate their desires to their partners. This empowerment is instrumental in dismantling traditional gender roles and creating a more equal and inclusive society.
4. Catering to Diverse Needs and Desires:
Bangkok's sex toy market is thriving due to its ability to cater to a wide range of needs and desires. Whether it be vibrators, dildos, bondage gear, or role-play accessories, the city provides a plethora of options to suit every individual's preferences. With a focus on quality, innovation, and inclusivity, sex toy retailers in Bangkok have created a welcoming environment where customers can explore and purchase products that align with their unique desires.
Conclusion:
The increasing importance of sex toys in Bangkok is a testament to the city's progressive mindset and its embrace of sexual liberation, pleasure, and empowerment. As societal attitudes continue to evolve, these products are no longer seen as taboo, but rather as tools that contribute to a healthier, more fulfilling, and more inclusive sexual experience. With its diverse range of products and a commitment to customer satisfaction, Bangkok has become a hub for individuals seeking to explore their desires, promote sexual wellness, and embrace their authentic selves.
