HAPPY BIRTHDAY, OCTAVIA ESTELLE BUTLER!
June 22nd, 2024 would have Butler's 77th birthday. Her work, from Parable of the Sower to Wild Seed, continues to impact disciplines from literature to entrepreneurship to space travel. Last Tuesday, Butler's essay, "A Few Rules for Predicting the Future" originally included in @Essence in 2000, was published by @chroniclebooks with beautiful Afrofuturist artwork by Manzel Bowman (@artxman).
Butler's writing inspires activists from @ToshiReagon to Alexis Pauline Gumbs (@alexispauline), @adriennemareebrown, @WalidahImarisha to Gabrielle Wyatt Gardner (@glwyatt). Reagon created the cultural experience Parable of the Sower The Opera, which engages with communities to take meaningful actions towards climate justice. Alexis Pauline Gumbs, adrienne maree brown, and Walidah Imarisha published the "Octavia Butler Strategic Reader" and "Octavia's Brood." Gabrielle Wyatt Gardner founded The Highland Project, a nonprofit investing in the sustainability and multi-generational visions of Black women leaders designing solutions for structural change.
Swipe to be inspired by Butler's powerful call to "write yourself in," check out her literary canon, and admire artwork from "A Few Rules For Predicting the Future!"
Let us know how Octavia E. Butler inspires your life and work in the comments!

Imagine how much joy I felt when I showed up to this photoshoot unknowing, and all these babes started pulling out thier @adriennemareebrown books, cookies and fudge, flowers!! 😍😍😍 If y’all don’t know her, you should get to know her because emergent strategy is currently changing the lives of so many people- and it’s helped me understand my purpose in this world and how to ground when everything feels horrible. The best( IMO) part of ES and #pleasureactivism is how it’s bringing people together right now, joined in struggle and joy, creating spaces that we want to see in the world, we are not waiting anymore. Thank you so much! @mialilyuno for collaberating to make this beautiful shoot and for the ongoing and brilliant inspiration :❤️❤️❤️

Response to #pleasureactivism
I did not think that a book could open up some things that I had kept locked up or even forgotten about until now. I used to keep old memories, notes and souvenirs from the past, hidden in a small tin can placed on the top shelf of my closet in my bedroom back home, old connections that still linger. Even now, seeing their names come up in the list of viewers of my occasional insta story or jogging past some of the places we went.. the firsts, the good, and the trauma all seem to resurface. Being back home in Tokyo, in a safe space where I can let my feeling go, I have the 余裕 to let my feelings go and reflect on all that has happened since I moved out 3 years ago.
The sections in the book that I had the strongest emotional response to didn’t make sense for me to share. But it was sometimes scary and uncomfortable to be made aware that the things I thought were of the past I never really got over. Now that I have more time, I hope I can give myself the space to cope a bit better and heal a bit more.

"Pleasure activism is the work we do to reclaim our whole, happy, and satisfiable selves from the impacts, delusiobs, and limitations of oppression and/or supremacy." - Adrienne Maree Brown @adriennemareebrown
Just allowing yourselves to fully embrace pleasure is, in a way, an act of defiance and simultaneously a deeply personal freedom. 2020 was so painful. Let's make space for pleasure in 2021 however we can. . . .

From my Do the Work journal. Collage, block printing ink (which I hate sooooo much), Posca paint pen. # "...all organizing is science fiction. When we talk about a world without prisons; a world without police violence; a world where everyone has food, clothing, shelter, quality education; a world free of white supremacy, patriarchy, capitalism, heterosexism; we are talking about a world that doesn’t currently exist. But collectively dreaming up one that does means we can begin building it into existence." -adrienne maree brown via pinetreelady on tumblr #getmessyartjournal #getmessyart #artjournal #artjournaling #visualjournal #visualjournaling #collage #quotes #artjournalpage #artjournals #artistsoninstagram #visualjournals #poscamarkers #poscapaintpens #adriennemareebrown #dothework #blockprinting https://www.instagram.com/p/CE4Euc3ANzT/?igshid=1im9f0xn3ek6x

🥰life scenes.🥰 • • something is shifting inside me. it's really exciting. but in a calm way, a blissful surrender, if you will... • • i'm finding so much joy + happiness in quiet moments of gratitude. the crisp fall air creeping in...the cloudy surrender to a new season. tiny affirmations + mindful prayers gracing my lips as teeny whispers... • • i adore this book. emergent strategy by @adriennemareebrown simply has me awestruck. i can't wait to put into practice so many of her ideas. i'm so grateful i found her words BEFORE i've begun the writing process for my dissertation. she's a scholar and true divine being from detroit. midwest practicalities almost always resonate and inspire my intellectual and integrational mindsets. i truly feel blessed to have her consciousness to help feed and guide my ideations.🙏🏼 • • happy saturday, all...and i almost look crossed eyed in that last photo. 🤷🏻‍♀️ i enjoy the portrait mode on this pixel whatever it is...forgive me. 🙏🏼🥰 #paradigmshift #adriennemareebrown #emergentstrategy #trustthepeople #dissertation #dissertationlife #spiritualactivists #spiritualactivism #riseinlove #psychedelicintegration #surrender #knowledgeisarhizome #universalconnection #higherconsciousness #alllearningissociallymediated #growthisnonlinear #trusttheprocess #feminineenergy #receptivity https://www.instagram.com/p/B2IENuChHxx/?igshid=1gylm65dehynx

Response to “From #MeToo to #WeConsent”
Hot and Heavy Homework: Choose one physical activity that you might take for granted right now—hugs, handshakes, flirtatious touch, below jobs, or sex, and track your consent in this activity for a week. You can keep doing what you normally do, but start to really pay attention to the signals in your body—are you a total yes to this contact? If not, why are you doing it? If yes, give yourself an internal high five. Learn your own landscape of consent.
I still go back to when I was a high school senior and said “no” to getting a hug from my English teacher. But it’s not that I did not want a consoling hug while I was bawling from the stress of college applications. In fact, I desperately wanted a hug ...so why did I say “no”?  While Brown focuses in on the consent between individuals, there’s also a type of societal consent, a socially acceptable way of behaving, that is present in Japanese life. My friends and I who have lived in the U.S. got stared at a lot by our classmates when we ran across from opposite ends of the hallway to embrace the day we got back from school break or when we started screaming and running at each other in the middle of Shibuya (not much has changed since then). Now that I am back in Tokyo (where people rarely ever even give handshakes and resort to bowing) during this pandemic (which prohibits us from even talking with our friends and neighbors, much less hold hands or hug), the lack of physical interactions has made me crave it even more.
If I was given a free pass to hug any person in the whole world without caring how other people will react or worrying about repercussions to our health, there is one person that comes to mind right away. She is the only person besides family or boyfriend that I would not be embarrassed or awkward about holding hands with. I know I can always count on her to make even a day spent without contacting her feel like an eternity. Simultaneously, we can pick up a conversation right where we left off 6 months ago as if no time has passed (perhaps due to the 以心伝心 nature of our interactions). I still go back to when we were in 7th grade, when we would be in the same class during the day but also call each other for hours after we got home (and racking up our phone bills). I cannot imagine what our union will be like when we see each other in person, especially after postponing our reunion and our “couple’s trip” to Germany.
As for my Japanese grandparents and cousins, I have never felt the warmth of their embrace but I can hear in their voices how happy they are when I call. It’s nice not to have the 13-hour time difference now so I can call my grandparents whenever just to check in and how they are feeling and spending their day-to-day. I know that once we get out of this, they will have all of my favorite dishes waiting for me and I will always accept their way of expressing love.
