July 22nd Q&A Recap
Here’s the Recap for last Friday’s Q&A Session!
Most questions were related to student/dorm life, work-study, and academics (professor recommendations).
Hamza, ‘23 co-hosted with me, Angela, ‘25 to answer questions. We are both from California (NorCal and SoCal, respectively), and we are both Computer Science majors of some sort. If you have not attended a Q&A session yet and ask a repeated question in future sessions, it will still be listed from the recap but probably not as in-depth.
Maybe in the future, I will list all these questions as separate questions on the blog itself, but for now it is on this google doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1cuZ7BCOx_QjEm6xIOtUQfeFKZ8Fd5Juowxvt1YtWsYY/edit?usp=sharing Please use your Lehigh University email to view the document.

Welcome welcome welcome to campus!
Springing (pun is totally intended as I have my windows open in my apartment now) into next week, aka February break week for many, means that our admissions office is going to be chock full of prospective students. So, I decided to offer up a bit of what you’ll get to experience if you’re visiting Northeastern next week, or in the future!
First off, we have different kinds of sessions. We have our Explore session, which is for prospective students and families, and our Inside sessions, which are designed for admitted students and feature a student perspective during the session. Be sure to sign up accordingly, or if you need to switch day of, let us know! We want to make the visit as applicable to your own experience as possible.
We also have some college specific sessions, as in Engineering Wednesdays, First Friday with CAMD, etc. See if any of these collide with your visit to campus and feel free to sign up to learn more about a program you’re interested in! They’ll feature presentations and often student perspectives from that particular college, which makes it a very interactive session.
Later on this spring, we have our Admitted Students Welcome Days. We have 5: March 19, March 25, March 26, April 8, and April 9. March 19th is Honors Welcome Day, so the programming will feature all 8 colleges and have a focus on the honors experience at Northeastern. March 25-26 and April 8-9 are our Welcome Days, featuring 4 colleges the first day of the weekend and the other 4 the second day. The programming tends to be focused around the colleges being presented that day and the Northeastern experience as a whole.
Regardless if it is on a prospective student tour, admitted students tour, or welcome day, I hope to see you on campus and welcome you to Northeastern!

A gem from the archives, c. 2000.
Students have returned to campus in time for the start of spring term and the first blossoms of the season. We are eager for the warm days to come when meals are shared on the red bricks, classes are held on the seaside lawn behind Turrets, and admitted students bring their excitement and curiosity to campus for a taste of COA. The Admitted Students’ Reception is just around the corner, on April 14 & 15. Don’t forget to RSVP by April 7!

What is everything I should know about Upper Cents?
Oh my! What a perfect question for me to answer haha! Upper Cents is divided into 3 buildings: Congdon and Emery, Leavitt and McConn, and Smiley and Thornburg. Congdon and Emery and Smiley and Thornburg are closest to Rathbone walking wise. There's the least amount of stairs. McConn and Levitt, on the other hand, have more stairs in order to get to them from the front. Personally, I think Upper Cents is second to M&M from being the most conveniently located dorm, especially if you take a lot of business classes. Yeah, there's no convenient bus stop, but every class is about a ~5-10 min walk since there's like three staircases near it that end up in different areas of campus. All the dorms itself in these buildings are practically the same. No AC, all doubles (unless your roommate never shows up), tiled flooring, no elevators, occasional bugs, water problems, etc. All girls are on the 3rd floor (idk why), and all boys are on the 2nd floor. You can request AC if needed (for health reasons or being an athlete ONLY). Personally, I was fine without an AC since I'm from LA (the heat), and it's only really hot for ~2 months out of the school year. There are two lounges/kitchens in each building. The cleanliness of the kitchens and the lounges depends on the residents. The kitchens feel like an old run-down chef's kitchen. They're huge but the appliances are older. There's one shared laundry space below McConn and Levitt and there's no door to it from the inside so you HAVE to go outside to do laundry no matter what building you're in. Except Smiley has a secret laundry space of its own (not a secret anymore). I would say each building has its own stereotype (from my year). I've never been to Congdon and Emery but they seem pretty quiet. Smiley and Thornburg are quiet at the lounge level but relatively noisy in the dorms themselves. McConn and Levitt are the troublemakers, they're noisy, destructive, and every problem goes on here. A lot of residents play games in McConn too. I lived in McConn, and no I wasn't a troublemaker, noisy, destructive. I usually stayed at Taylor because of the trouble. This isn't the most organized structure for an answer but I hope that's all you need to know! I'll edit it if I think of more to say. are M&M bathrooms coed?
There are separate by gender. Most dorms have gendered bathrooms but will have a few all-gendered bathrooms in the lounge of each dorm.

Will Lehigh revoke applications?
Unless you drop your GPA below a 2.0 or do something absolutely stupid that would ruin your reputation, I doubt it. If under some sort of scholarship/honors program from your financial aid, they might warn you of academic probation or something. I really doubt Lehigh will revoke it.

How’s Calc 1 at Lehigh?
If you’ve gotten a 4/5 on the AP Calc AB test, don’t waste your time with Calc 1 at Lehigh unless you want a GPA boost or you really don’t feel confident in Calc. Although you learn a little more than AP Calc AB, from what I’ve heard, it’s not 100% worth taking it again at Lehigh just to learn a few topics that you may not have covered in AP Calc AB. Most students that got a 4/5 on AP Calc AB will do fine in Calc 2.
I took Calc 1 twice at Lehigh (how embarrassing lol). Both times were very different. Just a quick background info, I didn’t take AP Calc AB and I took my last real math class in junior year of High School. I took data science for my senior year that countered for math.  My first semester, it was really hard. I had to refresh my memory while learning new topics. It also wasn’t helpful that I didn’t know how to study and I didn’t attend every lecture or take notes in every lecture. Also, the professor went pretty fast as he assumed most of the students took AP Calc AB already so he didn’t really stop much for questions.
My second semester was different for the better. The professor was more understanding and I had already previewed the content from the previous semester. I also knew how to study and formed a study group with my friends. This really motivated me. There was one major change to the structure which was that they added weekly quizzes which I didn’t have the previous semester.

Does Lehigh provide you with a laptop if you’re in IBE? Any laptop recommendations?
No. There are computers available to use at the libraries (Linderman and FML). The person asking asked about laptops for coding. So far from my experience, a Windows or Mac doesn’t really matter as for operating system. However, I don’t recommend those super thin laptops like Macbook Airs or Surface Pros. They get really hot and the battery will drain faster than usual especially if you have to run Zoom + Coding software. Get anything with above 4GB’s of RAM. The new M1, M2 macs are phenomenal (personally because I own an iPhone and it’s convenient). No, but seriously M1 macs are not to be looked down on. For Windows, at least, bare minimum, a CPU Intel Core i3 and then i5 is better.
Please don’t try coding from an iPad or Chromebooks it’s terrible and many softwares won’t work on it.
