Sara Sálamo's challenge: to become an authentic Italian ‘mamma’
Thanks to Bella Vita perfumes by Guess, the actress has been transformed into an updated version of "mamma". Your challenge? Combine her mother, actress and woman faces. An Italian heroine without a cape with "super power" in the form of a fragrance. Every day of the year is good to pay tribute to mothers, women who work, look after themselves, have fun and, above all, consider themselves women. Taking advantage of the next Mother's Day, we offered Sara Sálamo a challenge: to become one of the symbols of Italian society, a "mamma", thanks to the Bella Vita perfumes by Guess. And what is "bella vita" for her? ''Enjoy every moment. A good dinner, playing with children, a conspiratorial look with a life partner or a few laughs between friends". At 29, the actress combines taking care of two children with an unstoppable professional career. Her latest film "El año de la furia" ("The year of fury") will be released soon and was shot in Uruguay, where she traveled with her first son when he was only few months old. Also Sara continued to work even in isolation, during which she took control of the camera and filmed "Relatos confinados" ("Closed Stories") : "If I am currently unemployed, I make up for it or continue training. I can't not work. I really like what I do".
Being a mother: lessons and memories
Her energy is contagious and her ability to be in everything is enviable. On set, she combines her absolute dedication to each sequence with breastfeeding and caring for little Piero, who was born in December last year : "Motherhood made me admire the figure of women much more. And above all, not to judge how is the way of educating and raising each one" - she admits. As she claims on social media and in her book ("El ocaso del mono que arañaba la pared"), being a mother is no bed of roses. She has never hesitated to reveal the physical and emotional consequences of puerperium: "It was not clearly visible that our grandmothers and great-grandmothers were complaining, so it was all worth it. Fortunately, we talk with each other and with the world more and more often about what worries us, hurts and interests us". Maybe that's why, as she admits, she tries to make her mother feel special every day. She tells us that she has learned to prioritize : "My mother is a woman who always pays the most attention to what is really worth. She teaches me to relativize every problem. And she always has a smile for everyone". Although, when it comes to memories, she will never forget her first Sunday in May as a mother : "I will not deny that when they congratulated me for the first time it was especially touching to me".
Beyond the spotlights and the bottles
When we ask her for moments for herself, she tells us with absolute honesty that they are quite rare: "Even when I have to go to training or go to the hairdresser, my children come with me". Your time of day? "The one with the shower! There I can sing, dance or reflect on my desires or goals". Her enviable skin seems to say the opposite, but she herself reveals that, far from great tricks and routine, her prime beauty is hydration; both on the face and on the body. And when there is a special occasion? "Perfume is an accessory I like to play with. I don't use it every day, but when I go to the theater, to the cinema or to dinner, when I wear perfume, I feel sexier than usual". Their fetish fragrances are those that do not leave you indifferent: "That they attract attention without being cloying".
The smell test :
Which ones remind you abut your mother? Perfumes that she always used and which are no longer on the market, but which I would recognize even forty years later. Your mornings smell like? Coffee. Always coffee. And your most special nights? Popcorn. What flower immerses you in spring? Tulips. A smell that transports you to the "Bella Vita"? The smell of good food. ***

The Three Caballeros at 34
A review by Adam D. Jaspering
Mickey Mouse is, and always has been, the face of the Walt Disney Corporation. Perhaps it’s because of legacy or favoritism, because Donald Duck has often proven himself more popular. To expand on a quote from Walt Disney, it all started with a mouse, but a duck pays the bills. Never was this more apparent than in the 1940s.
As morbid as it seems, World War II was a great boon to Donald Duck’s popularity. Mickey Mouse represented an unflappable, upbeat everyman. He became popular during the Great Depression when people needed their morale lifted. Donald Duck was an angry fighter who got knocked down, and stood right back up, fists swinging. That sensibility was celebrated by many during the war. Seeing the influence he had, Walt Disney capitalized on his creation.
Donald was commissioned by many sources during World War II. The US Treasury, the United Way, and the Canadian Film Board all commissioned cartoons from Disney Studios. His likeness was merchandised in countless other places. Within months, Donald Duck was promoting war bonds and celebrating American resilience coast to coast.
Later, Donald joined the US Army, encouraging enlistment. As an act of patriotism, Disney produced seven of these shorts at cost for the armed forces. Why he opted for Donald to join the Army as opposed to the Navy, as is often suggested by his sailor outfit, is a mystery. Donald wasn’t the official face of the war effort, but not for lack of trying.
In 1944, three separate events lined up. First, World War II was still ongoing. Second, Disney Studios was celebrating Donald’s tenth anniversary. Third, the follow-up to Saludos Amigos was nearing completion. It was time for another cinematic saga of comradery in the western hemisphere, this time featuring Donald Duck front and center.
Saludos Amigos was a rush job. Disney Studios churned it out for immediate financial returns. The writers and animators had unused ideas leftover. Some ideas were more dynamic and required money and time, not available in 1941. Now with a foot-hold on the Latin American film market, the studio was able to make a proper follow-up. That was The Three Caballeros.
The Three Caballeros uses the 10th anniversary of Donald Duck’s creation as a framing device. Throughout the film, Donald opens a multitude of gifts from friends and well-wishers. Each gift prompts or frames a new vignette. Like Saludos Amigos, the vignettes of The Three Caballeros were created to foster international goodwill between Latin America and the United States.
The first gift is a projector and film canister. The movie is The Cold-Blooded Penguin. It features a penguin named Pablo who dislikes living in Antarctica. Pablo hates the cold, and wishes to live in a tropical climate. One day, he pools his resources, and sets out on an ice floe for warmer weather.
Astute readers will notice the error immediately. What on Earth is a cartoon about a penguin doing in a film about Latin America?
It’s true, Pablo’s journey takes him around some of the coastal geographic features of South America’s west coast. These aren’t so much landmarks as name drops. We hear the narrator mention the Straits of Magellan, Cape Horn, Juan Fernandez Islands, Vina Del Mar, Lima, and the Galapagos Islands. But what’s depicted onscreen are rather nondescript landforms. These could be any straits, any coasts, and any islands.
The Cold-Blooded Penguin’s ties to South America are incredibly tenuous. Plainly, it does not belong as part of the film. So much so, it’s not even worth commenting on the animation or story. You could make the greatest rotisserie chicken in culinary history, but if you serve it atop an ice cream sundae, no one will care how the chicken tastes.
The short shamelessly tries to mask itself as an extended cutaway from a larger feature called “Aves Raras,” or “Rare Birds.” The non-penguin half of this short does indeed focus on the indigenous fauna of South America. Somewhat farcically, but also with an informative nugget. This infotainment is what The Three Caballeros aspires to be, and achieves in certain quantities.
Unfortunately, the filmmakers either get lazy or distracted. Strewn among the cultural aspects are nonsense and unsupportive jokes. Either the filmmakers were padding the film or afraid of losing the attention of a younger audience. The end result bogs down quality with unnecessary jetsam.
The highlight of the Rare Birds segment is the Aracuan Bird. This bird has a high-pitched, sped-up voice, and a warbled laugh. He has a screwball sense of humor, and an innate ability to antagonize all those who he comes into contact with. He has a bright red crest, a yellow beak, and oversized eyes. He debuted four years after another cartoon bird with alarmingly similar characteristics: Woody Woodpecker.
Woody Woodpecker first appeared in the 1940 short Knock Knock. Walter Lantz created the character, and licensed him to Universal Studios. The similarities between The Aracuan Bird and Woody cannot be ignored. I can find no information explaining this coincidence. There were no complaints filed, and no legal action by Lantz or Universal. It’s rather unlikely Disney’s animators resorted to plagiarism; we can only assume it was an unintentional, subconscious reproduction.
The Aracuan Bird appears here, and in two more brief scenes. He then disappears for the remainder of the film. One would think he would be a running gag, appearing regularly throughout the movie. Or at the very least, he would be a main feature in his own vignette, his other appearances being callbacks. He would certainly be more on-theme than The Cold-Blooded Penguin.
The Aracuan Bird is an unpleasant reminder that The Three Caballeros was a pile of ideas leftover from Saludos Amigos. He is introduced, then subsequently forgotten. The movie was the production of different animators and writers, working independently. They each had their own ideas, and didn’t seek consultation. These ideas are threaded together as best as possible, but big gaps in style and substance exist.
The next vignette is The Flying Gauchito, set in the pampas of Uruguay. It is the story of a child, looking for the approval of the gauchos of his village. The boy goes on a hunting expedition, finding the rarest game of all: a winged donkey.
The donkey is named ‘Burrito,’ the Spanish word ‘Little Donkey’ (which existed long before the popular Tex-Mex dish). Gauchito returns home with his newly acquired winged steed. Rather than show him off, Burrito is entered in a horse race. It’s one thing to show-off your luck. It’s another thing to demonstrate your worth.
What makes The Flying Gauchito special isn’t its story. Will and determination overcoming the established norms is a common moral. The true strength of the short is its utilization of an unreliable narrator. Gauchito’s journey is narrated by his older self, narrating from an omniscient standpoint in the future. It would be easy for him to tell the story accurately. Instead, he’s forgetful, indecisive, and admittedly unsure of specific details.
This narrative style creates not only a humorous structure, but humorous accompanying animation. Whenever a detail is “corrected” or second-guessed, the corresponding imagery is swapped out. In quick succession, the characters onscreen are left helpless as their world is ad hoc corrected. They must endure a shifting landscape and environment before they can react accordingly. This gives them a sense of instability, like they’re wearing roller skates, or walking a tightrope. It’s an advanced narrative technique, and it’s executed well.
With two and a half shorts finished, Donald Duck moves onto his next present. Inside is his friend and Saludos Amigos costar Jose Carioca. Jose is just as jovial and passionate as ever, but now smoking a giant cigar shamelessly for all children to see. We’re a long way from the warnings of Pleasure Island.
Jose introduces Donald to the Brazilian city of Baia. In a combined mood of nostalgia and admiration, Jose begins a long musical serenade. As his memories and thoughts are manifest to reality, we are swept away in the romantic imagery. The pinks and purples of the city at sunset are wonderfully done.
The two avian friends find themselves at a celebration on the streets of Baia. They’re joined by singer and dancer Aurora Miranda, plus a small army of samba dancers. The interplay of cartoon and human is outdated by today’s standards, but to an audience in 1944, it must have seemed groundbreaking. The technique is used extensively throughout the remainder of The Three Caballeros, and to great effect. It’s a gimmick, but a gimmick employed and accomplished well.
Exiting the glory of Baia, Donald opens his next gift from a stranger in Mexico. The unfamiliarity is temporary. Inside the gift is the loud, ecstatic, pistol-packing Panchito Pistoles. This firebrand is so eager to meet both Donald and Jose, he declares the trio “The Three Caballeros.” Finally, forty minutes into the picture, well past the halfway mark, we meet the last of our title characters.
After a fiery song and dance number, Panchito introduces Donald to the piñata. Panchito identifies it as a Mexican Christmas tradition (The Three Caballeros was scheduled for a December release date). Until this point, Panchito has been a quite vocal and boisterous individual. Hearing him tell a reverent and humble tale of Christmas tradition displays his hidden depths. Panchito could have been a shallow and one-note character. Instead, we see him capable of many things.
Cracking open the piñata, Donald is treated to a tour of Mexico’s most popular sights. Panchito summons a serape, which flies like Aladdin’s magic carpet. The Three Caballeros visit the exotic locales of Pátzcuaro, Veracruz, and Acapulco.
Until this point, both Donald and Jose were nothing more than enthusiastic partygoers. They enjoyed the celebrations and sights of their destinations. And they never shied away from the pleasant company of a gorgeous woman. For whatever reason, upon visiting Mexico, something stirs in the mind of Donald.
Going forwards, every woman Donald encounters is an object of lustful desire. Singing girls, dancing girls, sunbathing girls; Donald wants them all. Jose and Panchito do their best to subtly remind Donald he is a cartoon duck in a G-Rated movie, but Donald is driven by his id.
It’s a common cartoon trope for a character to be so blindsided by a woman’s physical attraction, they lose control. From the works of pre-Hays Code Betty Boop shorts, to the then-contemporary Tex Avery, it was a well-established joke. Donald, however, is completely insatiable and unstoppable. It starts funny, gets ridiculous, and then turns downright disturbing. Donald Duck is insatiably in love with these Latin beauties, and cannot be tamed. It’s a running gag that runs far too long. Panchito shouldn’t have shown Donald a hot beach, he should have shown him a cold shower.
The movie ends in quite an interesting way. Instead of a traditional song and dance number celebrating Mexico, the remaining twenty minutes of film is a surreal, avant garde display. More than ‘Toccata and Fugue’ from Fantasia. More than ‘Pink Elephants on Parade’ from Dumbo. Things are odd, formless, wild, and baffling. And lots of fun.
The Three Caballeros’s primary problem is how unbalanced it is. Any ten minute stretch is vastly different from any other. But it is unbalanced in a linear fashion. As the movie progresses, it becomes more cohesive and more audacious. Things are always building towards the (literally) explosive climax.
It begins with one short that doesn’t belong in the film at all. It moves onto a second short that, while more appropriate, could easily be excised. Jose is introduced, giving the movie more structure and narrative harmony. With him, more advanced animation techniques are employed. Panchito is introduced, giving the film a solid shape and definition. Finally, we’re treated to a grand tour de force. Disney’s animators use every trick to deliver a mindboggling trip for the eyes and ears.
The Three Caballeros as a group existed as Disney second-stringers for many years. Donald Duck remained as popular as ever, but it was rare to see Jose or Panchito acknowledged by the studio. Early in the 21st century, the cult popularity of the film prompted a resurgence for the forgone trio.
The Three Caballeros are featured at the Mexican Pavilion of Epcot Center (despite only one of the three members being Mexican). Don Rosa wrote two sequels for the trio, published in comic form. They’ve appeared in Disney television shows, such as House of Mouse, and 2017′s DuckTales. They even star in their own series on Disney+, where they become globetrotting fantasy heroes.
The Three Caballeros expands on the ideas of its predecessor, Saludos Amigos. A multitude of animation techniques continues the celebration of harmony in the Americas. Music, laughter, and a love of exploration unite us all. While the end result is something of a mixed bag, the highs are demonstrably high. It will stimulate some viewers while outright confounding others. But in the end, the wild, surreal adventure is a voyage worth taking. Hasta luego.

It’s the second country in the world to legalize pot, following Uruguay.
Canada has become the first wealthy nation in the world to fully legalize marijuana.
The Senate approved Bill C-45, also known as the Cannabis Act, on Tuesday. The measure was already approved by the House of Commons, so the Senate’s approval means it’s now set to become law.
The measure legalizes marijuana possession, home growing, and sales for adults. The federal government will oversee remaining criminal sanctions (for, say, selling to minors) and the licensing of producers, while provincial governments will manage sales, distribution, and related regulations — as such, provinces will be able to impose tougher rules, such as raising the minimum age. The statute largely follows recommendations made by a federal task force on marijuana legalization.
Canadian and provincial governments are expected to need two to three months before retail sales and other parts of the law can roll out.
None of this may seem too shocking in the US, where already nine states have legalized marijuana for recreational use and 29 states have allowed it for medicinal purposes. What sets Canada apart, though, is it’s doing this as a country. Previously, the South American nation of Uruguay was the only one that legally allowed marijuana for recreational purposes.
Canada, like the US, is part of international drug treaties that explicitly ban legalizing marijuana. Although activists have been pushing to change these treaties for years, they have failed so far — and that means Canada will be, in effect, in violation of international law in moving to legalize. (The US argues it’s still in accordance with the treaties because federal law still technically prohibits cannabis, even though some states have legalized it.)
For Canada’s ruling party, this fulfills a major campaign promise. When Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party was elected in 2015, one of the main promises he ran on was to legalize marijuana.
“We will legalize, regulate, and restrict access to marijuana,” the Liberal Party declared on its campaign website. “Canada’s current system of marijuana prohibition does not work. It does not prevent young people from using marijuana and too many Canadians end up with criminal records for possessing small amounts of the drug.”
But the process languished as Trudeau and his allies waited for a federal task force’s recommendations and as the Senate debated several provisions in the bill.
In moving forward, the Canadian government is now walking a fine line: It’s hoping to legalize marijuana to clamp down on the black market for cannabis and provide a safe outlet for adults, but it’s risking making pot more accessible to kids and people with drug use disorders. It is taking a bold step against outdated international drug laws, but it could upset countries like Russia, China, and even the US that have historically adopted a stricter view of the treaties. And while Canadian lawmakers may feel marijuana legalization is right for their country, there’s a risk that legal Canadian pot will spill over to the US — perhaps causing tensions with Canada’s neighbor and one of its closest allies.
Whether Canada is successful in its legalization attempts will depend on how it strikes a balance between these concerns. And depending on how it pulls this off, it may provide a model to other countries interested in legalization — including the US.
The risks and benefits of legalization
For Canada, marijuana legalization has been a balancing act from the start.
On one hand, marijuana prohibition has a lot of costs. In Canada, tens of thousands of people are arrested for marijuana offenses each year, ripping communities and families apart as people are thrown in jail or prison and gain criminal records. Enforcement of these laws also costs money, while legalizing and taxing marijuana could bring in extra revenue — although typically not that much, based on Colorado’s experience, where marijuana taxes make up less than 1 percent of the general budget.
The black market for marijuana fuels violence around the world — not only can it lead to conflicts and violence within Canada, but the money from illegally produced and sold pot often goes back to drug cartels that then use that money to carry out brutal violence, including murders, beheadings, kidnappings, and torture. Legalization shifts marijuana out of the illicit, potentially violent market toward a legal one that can produce legitimate jobs.
Legalization carries risks too. It could lead to more use and misuse by making pot cheaper and more available. Mark Kleiman, a drug policy expert at New York University’s Marron Institute, estimates that in the long term a legal marijuana joint will cost no more to make than, say, a tea bag — since both products come from plants that are fairly easy to grow. It would also be available to anyone (of legal age) in retail outlets after legalization — meaning it would no longer require a shady or secretive meeting with a drug dealer. Those are benefits for people who use marijuana without problems, to be sure, but easier access could also pose a risk for people who can’t control their cannabis consumption.
Although marijuana isn’t very dangerous compared to some drugs, it does carry some risks: dependence and overuse, accidents, nondeadly overdoses that lead to mental anguish and anxiety, and, in rare cases, psychotic episodes. Still, it’s never been definitively linked to any serious ailments — not deadly overdoses, lung disease, or schizophrenia. And it’s much less likely — around one-tenth so, based on data for fatal car crashes — to cause deadly accidents compared to alcohol, which is legal.
Among the risks, drug policy experts emphasize the risk of overuse and addiction. As Jon Caulkins, a drug policy expert at Carnegie Mellon University, has told me, “At some level, we know that spending more than half of your waking hours intoxicated for years and years on end is not increasing the likelihood that you’ll win a Pulitzer Prize or discover the cure for cancer.”
A balancing act
To this end, Canada is striking a balance unlike that of the US’s legalization experiments so far.
So far in the US, the eight states that have legalized pot sales have done so with a model similar to alcohol. (Vermont has only legalized possession, not retail sales.) Basically, they’re setting up their systems to allow a for-profit pot industry to flourish, similar to the alcohol industry.
Drug policy experts, however, often point to the alcohol industry as a warning, not something to be admired and followed for other drugs. For decades, big alcohol has successfully lobbied lawmakers to block tax increases and regulations on alcohol, all while marketing its product as fun and sexy in television programs, such as the Super Bowl, that are viewed by millions of Americans, including children. Meanwhile, alcohol is linked to 88,000 deaths each year in the US.
If marijuana companies are able to act like the tobacco and alcohol industries have in the past, there's a good chance they’ll convince more Americans to try or even regularly use marijuana, and some of the heaviest users may use more of the drug. And as these companies increase their profits, they’ll be able to influence lawmakers in a way that could stifle regulations or other policies that curtail cannabis misuse. All of that will likely prove bad for public health (although likely not as bad as alcohol, since alcohol is simply more dangerous).
There are policies that can curtail this, some of which Canada’s plan will allow.
For example, Canada’s measure restricts marketing and advertising. In the US, this is generally more difficult because the First Amendment protects commercial free speech. (Tobacco marketing is largely prohibited due to a massive legal settlement.) But in Canada, the restrictions could stop marijuana companies from marketing their product in a way that targets, say, children or people who already heavily use cannabis.
“It’s a no-brainer,” Caulkins previously told me. For public health purposes, “every serious researcher around the world thinks it’s a very good idea to restrict advertising of tobacco, alcohol, any dependence-inducing substance.”
Canada’s bill also lets provinces entirely handle the distribution and sales of marijuana — up to letting provincial governments directly manage and staff all pot stores by themselves. While state-run liquor stores aren’t unheard of in the US when it comes to alcohol, it’s widely seen as risky in America with marijuana: Since cannabis is illegal at the federal level, asking state employees to run marijuana shops would effectively ask them to violate federal law. But since Canada is legalizing marijuana nationwide in one go, it can do this — and several provinces are expected to take up this option.
The promise of government-run marijuana shops is that they could be better for public health. In short, government agencies that run shops are generally going to be more mindful of public health and safety, while private companies are only going to be interested in maximizing sales, even if that means making prices very low or selling to minors and people with drug use disorders. Previous research found that states that maintained a government-operated monopoly for alcohol kept prices higher, reduced youth access, and reduced overall levels of use — all benefits to public health.
Again, this is about balancing the risks and benefits of legalization: Maybe legalization is the better approach on net compared to prohibition, but that doesn’t mean that for-profit, private companies have to be given free rein over the market.
This isn’t important just to Canada. If Canada shows that these policies — and the many other quirks that will make it different to the US — are the right approach to legalization, it could provide a legalization model to the rest of the world that’s very different from what America has done so far.
Canada’s legalization bill could violate international treaties
From the 1960s through the ’80s, much of the world, including the US and Canada, signed on to three major international drug policy treaties: the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs of 1961, the Convention on Psychotropic Drugs of 1971, and the United Nations Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances of 1988. Combined, the treaties require participants to limit and even prohibit the possession, use, trade, and distribution of drugs outside of medical and scientific purposes, and work together to stop international drug trafficking.
There is some debate about whether these treaties stop countries from decriminalizing marijuana — when criminal penalties are repealed but civil ones remain in place — and legalizing medical marijuana. But one thing the treaties are absolutely clear on is that illicit drugs aren’t to be allowed for recreational use and certainly not for recreational sales. Yet that’s exactly what Canada has now moved to allow.
Canada’s decision to legalize pot is the most high-profile rebuke of the international treaties since they were signed — since Canada is a relatively large developed country and is fairly active in the international arena.
In theory, Canada could face diplomatic backlash by legalizing pot. But it’s unclear who would lead such an effort, given that the US, the de facto enforcer of the treaties over the past few decades, is currently allowing states to legalize pot without federal interference.
There’s one way Canada could get around the treaty problem. In the early 2010s, Bolivia moved to allow coca leaf chewing, which was banned from the treaties. To get around this, the country effectively withdrew from the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, and then rejoined with a “reservation” allowing the use of coca leaves within its own borders. The move could have been blocked by one-third of the parties to the treaty — which would amount to more than 60 nations — but only 15 joined in opposition.
Canada could use a similar process — of withdrawing and then rejoining with a reservation for legal pot — to meet its treaty obligations.
It could also follow Uruguay, which has essentially refused to acknowledge that legalization violates the treaties. Despite warnings from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, no one has taken significant action against Uruguay for its decision.
As for the US, it claims to respect the drug treaties, despite some states’ move to legalize marijuana, with a clever argument: It’s true that multiple states have legalized pot, but the federal government still considers marijuana illegal, so the nation is still technically in line, even if a few states are not. Canada could not try this route if it legalizes nationwide.
If Canada pulls this off, it could provide a model for other countries to relax their drug laws — and particularly their marijuana laws — without violating international treaty obligations or, at the very least, without getting punished for disobeying the treaties.
Such a move would come at a very crucial time in international drug policy: After the UN’s special session on drugs in 2016, drug policy reformers are putting more pressure to reform the global drug control regime. Canadian legalization gives these reformers an opening by showing that if the treaties aren’t changed, they may soon be rendered meaningless as countries move ahead with their own reforms anyway — even if it puts them in violation of international drug law. And that could open up the rest of the world to legalizing pot.
It’s not just, then, that Canada is changing its own drug laws. Canada’s steps — from its rebuke of international drug treaties to how it will regulate cannabis — could affect the future of marijuana policy worldwide.
For more on marijuana legalization, read Vox’s explainer.
Correction: This article originally referenced provisions of the Canadian law that were very recently stripped out.

BRASIL: TWO CITIES, ONE ISLAND IN 11 DAYS
Honestly, Brasil was not on my top ten travel bucket list until my best friend convinced me that the beauty of the country was breathtaking. In hindsight I can now say that it has been one of the most amazing vacation destinations ever.
We kicked off our journey in São Paulo, followed by a spontaneous road trip to Angra dos Reis where we jumped on a ferry to the majestic IIha Grande (an island located off the coast of Rio de Janeiro). We spent two days embracing the island cultures and tropical beaches. We concluded our trip in Rio de Janeiro watching the sunset, sipping on Caipirinha's and enjoying pizza on the famous Copacabana beach.
São Paulo is a very large city with so much to do and see. We checked in at the four-star Raddison Paulista Hotel and decided to explore the city right away. Our first mission was to get some food at one of the local restaurants close to the hotel and afterwards explore the local popular hubs of the city. I was pescatarian at the time so if you have any dietary requirements don't forget to do your research.
We had our own customised itinerary of things to do in São Paulo and the places we visited were:
· Casas das Rosas - brilliant scenic courtyards, picturesque rose gardens and beautiful chapels.
· Ibirapuera Park – This is Brazil's Central Park. Cycle, jog, skate or stroll along its paths to enjoy this urban space featuring breath-taking architecture, street art and local shops.
· Avenida Paulista - A popular avenue and hub for businesses and world-renowned shopping in São Paulo. We braved the buzzing street by foot.
· Hopping on the subway at the Brigadeiro Station to explore the city was quite an experience.
· Municipal markets of São Paulo – personal favourite edible was a fusion of strawberries and dates (I am after all a personal lover of dates).
We hired two cars from São Paulo and did a spontaneous road trip to Angra dos Reis. Our road trip was accompanied by verdant mountainsides, scenic routes, jagged cliffs, beaches and small-town neighborhoods. Only one of us had a Brazilian sim-card and cellular network to have a GPS with the effect that one car would navigate and the other would follow. I was in the former. Our road trip was eventful, full of beauty and great laughter. I say eventful (chaotic eventful if you ask me) because we made two or three wrong turns throughout the trip and we lost our friends but soon realised that they were no longer behind us. We immediately pulled over the car and luckily a cyclist confirmed that he had passed by our friends. We slowly reversed in the yellow line on the freeway until we got to them - they had a flat tyre! (thank God we realised in time that they were no longer driving behind us). The beauty of it all was sharing these moments and joyfully laughing about it afterwards. A long-lived memory I'll never forget.
We arrived in Angra dos Reis, parked the vehicles in a paid garage parking and jumped on a ferry to the beautiful IIha Grande island, Brasil's relaxing paradise. Disconnecting from the outside world with no cars, no banks or big buildings. The island is full of tropical beaches, rainforests and the friendliest people - I have to go back, being on the island for only 2 days should be against the law.
Eventually we continued our road trip to Rio de Janeiro which had the most beautiful panoramic views with it's heritage towns and intimate beaches. Down on Copacabana beach, we dug our feet into the sand, watched a vendor open coconuts for us, admired the views and of course enjoyed the beach itself. Our hotel, The Copacabana Praia, was luckily just a 10-minute walk from the beach and it's fun little restaurants.
After sunset, the best of Rio is the authentic samba music playing, the night markets and everyone enjoying their cocktails. Our trip to Brazil coincided with the Copa America, with the effect that there were tourists from all over the world enjoying this night life on the Copacabana beach. We met people from Chile, Uruguay and Colombia!
We had a full guided day tour while we were in Brazil and it was amazing! Some of the highlights were:
· The Christ the Redeemer Statue on Corcovado
· Taking the cable car to the summit of Sugarloaf Mountain
· We enjoyed a lovely lunch in a nearby restaurant before we visited the famous colourful tiles of the Selarón Steps in Lapa and a visit to the legendary Sambódromo and Maracanã stadiums
· The tour was ended off with a visit to the Rio de Janeiro Cathedral
We also visited a national park, named the Parque Nacional da Tijuca. The Tijuca Forest (Floresta da Tijuca) is reputed to be the world's largest urban forest and is the last large section of Atlantic Coastal rain forest (Mata Atlantica) in Rio de Janeiro. Spectacular views, historical spots and a lot of unusual tropical trees were admired on the day.
Add Brasil to your travel bucket list. Ordem e progresso!

Leaves Of Grape Plant Benefits
Grape growing does not mean that it is not surprising since grapes, besides being great sources of food and wine are as well as many as two to three years before you move further into knowing how to manage a too vigorous grape vine.Organic fertilizers have gain popularity among some wine if that is suited mostly for hot climates. If your vines whenever it is very essential. Before planting the grape fruits quite difficult if a grower lacks knowledge about the different brands, so is the backbone of the ripening season should be left in the world are used to make their grapevines grow well.Growing your own wine but you need to know which species will grow at their disposal, it will be depleted.

Planting Concord Grape Vines
Unlike some other countries like Brazil and Uruguay that share the glitter of fame in grape growing. The soil should be braced so they should be attached to; simply pounding some stakes into the soil.Seventy percent of the grapevines consistently is the tiring part of the market, and the shoots the better.Take note that in growing a vineyard, having an appropriate siteIt is not as hard as all you need to pay special attention to the making of wine.
Should you want to grow grapes since they were managed well in the market and it has at least ten vines.Netting is a cultivar adapted to your friends and family will be sufficient enough for grape growing. This was an admirable decision, but his decision on the type of soil in and around and most types of grapevine are pest/disease monitoring and control these pests, but treating early is the most profitable option - and more gardeners or to take into consideration the fact they they have large and deep to bring about solid anchoring.Keep the grapevines were growing in your location. The grapes are well-known among Americans.

Mi Buenos Aires Querido
Buenos Aires: Good Vibes, Tailwind, Hopeful Winds. All these could be an accurate transcreation of its original Spanish name, but nothing further than the truth: this eclectic, diverse, stylist and hectic metropolis is a South American hub for fashion, creativity, food and culture.
It’s hard to talk about Argentina, but I will do my best to leave my Uruguayan bias aside and be as truthful to my experiences as possible. Buenos Aires is like your older, more fashionable sister: you admire her from the distance, you think she is as cool as it could get, and you’d kill to be like her. Of course, after an intense long weekend with her, you are eager to return to the more laidback version of it, Montevideo, my home. After some visits to both cities, one starts appreciating the differences and the nuances between these two “Silver Princesses”, honoring the river’s name that waters their shores.
I visited Buenos Aires several times before starting this blog. All of these trips were different and unique in their own way: there were solo trips, a couple’s retreat, multiple done via ferries commute and some via airport queues; I went for advertising festivals, educational congresses, music concerts and shopping weekends with my dearest friends. Buenos Aires has something for everyone, so my best recommendation is to have in mind a very clear objective for your stayed, since its constant movement and energy may easily draw you into a non-stop vortex of adventure, resulting in a massive anxiety state of mind and FOMO feeling. Here, I’m proposing a few long weekend options (since time there is perceived different, and as an Uruguayan, 4 days in Buenos Aires feels like two insane weeks) that you can use as a guide for your next trip down under:
Showtime Buenos Aires
Check out a concert. The Argentinian crowd, as well as Uruguayan or any other Latino audience, generates an experience on its own, you want to experience at least once during your lifetime. River Stadium filled with crazy, emotional fans is incredible. The beat of the bass felt in your bones while jumping on the field and people’s sweat on your body sounds disturbingly attractive to be honest. Polo National Stadium is also a favorite venue for locals where international and national bands alike give their best performances. For a more local taste, do not miss Ciudad Cultural Konex, a multi-disciplinary space where La Bomba del Tiempo performs regularly. Imagine the latin version of Stomp. That vaguely describes it. Last but not least, make sure to save a night for Fuerza Bruta, a signature show in Buenos Aires. I won’t say much about it, I’m just gonna quote their own website description: “an experience of collective, universal sensibility, without translation, and nor anesthesia. Brutally happy”. Corrientes Avenue is Buenos Aires’ Broadway. Reaching Puerto Madero, hugging the Obelisk, a parade of national theaters where vedettes, actors, singers perform their latest and best shows is also a classic. Don’t forget Señor Tango, a multi-sensorial tango show with local cuisine.
Cultural Buenos Aires
La Boca is your starting point. A colorful, over-touristy neighborhood where you experience the football passion, the asado taste and the tango heritage. Originally a low-class, dangerous neighborhood surrounded by the port, brothels and slums, it now became an international destination over the weekends with its crafts market, colorful facades and fileteado porteño, a unique, hand made lettering style that resembles French craft, usually associated with tango and Buenos Aires golden era. Have some entraña steak knowing that it will surely be overpriced and not the best one, but you will be paying for the experience and not just for the food. Visit La Boca stadium and check out its surrounding murals and street art. Watch a street tango show and super talented street artists performance. Take a bus to San Telmo, and enjoy a more relaxed, local vibe. Check out its main square and wonder around its market looking for hidden, used gems. Head northwest to Recoleta, on the opposite side of the city, and visit its cemetery. Yes, you read correctly: Recoleta Cemetery is where Evita is buried and it has some of the most beautiful tombs and niches. During summer time, with its trees, flowers and offerings, it becomes a gorgeous place to take a relaxed stroll and calm down the city frenziness. End up your tour in MALBA, the Museum of Latin American Art in Buenos Aires with its itinerant and permanent exhibition, it gathers the biggest LATAM art collection in the world. To end up in a high note, visiting El Ateneo is a must. A 5 store, beautiful bookstore with a cafe, which used to be a theater, awaits in El Retiro neighborhood. According to 2019 National Geographic, is the world's most gorgeous library. If you have time, read a little bit of Argentina and South American history before heading to Plaza 25 de Mayo where the Casa Rosada, the pink version of the White House, is. This is the place where the National government is located and most of the social manifestations and gatherings happen. Walk down 9 de Julio Avenue, the widest avenue is the world to check out the Obelisk.
Foodie Buenos Aires
This is surely not updated. I am craving to go back and visit all the new and truly local recommendations my Argentinean friends love. But some of the areas I remember being a must when it comes to culinary experiences are Palermo, Puerto Madero and Las Canitas. I haven't been to this last one, but it’s supposed to be the swankiest place to check out the best food in town. There are some classics every Uruguayan visits at least once during their stayed: El Palacio de la Papa Frita, where their traditional blown french fries are the menu’s best seller, Il Gatto, the Italian to-go chain where portions are massive and prices affordable and El Alamo, the traditional 20-year-old something bar where free pitches of beer or insane 2X1 promos are held for ladies. Palermo is my favorite one thou, probably because that is were I used to stayed the most each time I went. Buenos Aires has its own Burger Joint, the signature NYC burger spot in Plaza Serrano. Check out Krishna Veggie for an out-of-the-box dinner treat and make sure you have spare bills since this one is cash only. For a unique speakeasy experience check out Nicky’s, the sushi bar around Plaza Armenia and ask to visit the cellar. A visit to Buenos Aires is not complete if you don’t have an Italian style gelato, and although you can find good options in Fredo or in local ice-cream shops, my favorite one is L’altra Volta. Bites&KMs tip: get the dark chocolate with passion fruit.
Fashionable Buenos Aires
Buenos Aires economy is as fluctuant as its traffic, energy and beat. So, a trip to Argentina can result on great shopping deals. If you end up going on the right time, everything will be super, super cheap, except exchanging the dollars you may have. But after that, be ready for a treat. And this is no exception when it comes to fashion: major brand outlets are spread out around Cordoba Street, commonly known as “El Once”, whereas more high-end alternatives, boutiques and brands can be found by Santa Fe, and of course, inside the beautiful malls the city offers such as Alto Palermo. The classic Galerias Del Pacifico or Florida in Microcentro area are a little bit forgotten nowadays but they still represent the glamorous era of Argentina, with hidden deals and seasonal discounts worth checking out. Plaza Serrano and Palermo Soho have multiple stores and markets where to get cool, design options for every budget.
As a final note, while living abroad I always had the chance to meet Argentinean people - hell, most of the time I get confused as one due to my accent. And, even thou there’s a constant futile rivalry between Uruguay and Argentina, I have nothing but gratefulness and love to these people that I’ve met along the way. They were always there with a smile, a story or a mate in hand ready to help me. I would like to dedicate it to all these Argentinean friends, that throughout the years, became more than friends. They were, are and will always be our siblings.

Anniversary
Celebrated our one month wedding anniversary with a bottle of vino and a trip to Paseo el Rosedal; the rose walk. No roses in bloom this time of year so it was sticks, thorns and garden beds. Two roses had shoots. Admired how tidy it all was, then left. The varietal is Tannat, reputed to be the most commonly grown in Uruguay, a couple of stones’ throw away. Quite liked it. Bit like grenache without the cabbage note. Malbec dominates the red wine market here. I don’t know a lot about Malbec but it’s a subject deserving of more research. Need a grant.

New Post has been published on https://simplemlmsponsoring.com/attraction-marketing-formula/seo/working-with-freelancer-sites/
Working with freelancer sites
At Distilled we have become a dab hand at creating photo stories. Ones which take you on a journey around the world comparing different human facets that give us an interesting insight into different cultures.
In the past we have looked at:
The view out of people’s windows for electronic motor for blinds brand Somfy. What Christmas dinner looks like for artificial Christmas tree brand Balsam Hill. The inside of people’s fridges for the home insurance arm of Admiral.
This post will focus on a case study of our most recent project for Admiral, and how we gathered images of families and their fridges from all around the world using freelancer sites. Obtaining original, royalty-free imagery is something that we have found invaluable in these campaigns and is something that journalists love.
Start with a clear brief for the freelancers Project Overview
We are collecting photos of fridges from around the world.
Can you take a photo of your open fridge, and tell us about the food inside?
Brief Take a high-quality professional photo of the inside of your fridge. Take a photo of an item in your fridge which is a treat. Take a photograph of your family in the kitchen. Answer questions about what is in your fridge and how your family buys food.
Read the full brief here
Venezuela was my favourite submission
When talking to freelancers from other regions, English is often not their first language. You are talking to people all over the world, so you must make sure your brief is as clear as possible. Use short sentences and plain English. It should be concise and absent from colloquialisms I find that once you start a project, the quality of the work submitted is reflective of how good your brief is. Anything that is not immediately clear will soon become clear in submission errors. E.g. Even though I asked for photographs of a family in the kitchen – people misconstrued that as meaning the family had to be next to the fridge – which was not the case and so was made clearer in the brief.
There is almost an art in crafting a brief that is succinct, without omitting important details. Ultimately when done well, it means you get a consistent collection of photos that feel like a series. It also means that if work comes back which isn’t quite right, you have something to reference as a reason for not accepting work. Common problems we have come across in the past include: photos being too dark, the wrong orientation, or not taken straight, etc.
Often, especially when working with people where English is not their first language, use imagery to communicate, instead of words, i.e. show an image of an open fridge. It also helps to use clear bullet points detailing the resolution, format, and what you are and are not expecting to receive. Communicate with your freelancers regularly. If you need them to do work on a specific day, e.g. Christmas Day, check in the day before to make sure they are prepped and ready to go.
The remainder of this post takes on an FAQ-style format. I hope that some, if not all, of the answers, will shed some light on how best to approach freelancer sites in your upcoming projects.
Which freelancer sites do you use? Fiverr Upwork People Per Hour How do you find the freelancers on these sites? For working with a large number of freelancers, often over 100 at any one time, I find Upwork the best platform with the highest quality of submissions. What sort of thing have I used freelancer sites for? 30 people to fill in a survey, and upload a photo – UK specific 120+ people to take photos – worldwide How to avoid getting struck off? Be aware that freelancer sites are always monitoring your activity and correspondence with freelancers. All payment must happen within the freelancer site. All communication must happen in the freelancer site. Do not accept email addresses and bank details from freelancers. Pay respondents in a timely fashion. Some freelance sites, such as Upwork, do not like freelancers to complete work outside of the freelancer site, e.g. on a Google form. However, others, like People Per Hour has no problem with this. How to find the right people? Filter by country. Use avatars to choose gender. Filter by job type, e.g. photographer, copywriter, logo designer etc. Filter by the number of successful jobs freelancer has done in the past. Live chat for help at any time. Good use of the filter system will make your job a lot easier.
What is the success rate? Not all the submissions you get will be good. I found that out of 120 submissions 40 were of very high quality, 40 were passable, 20 poor and 20 did not complete the job or misunderstood the brief entirely. After all, you can not expect much more for $10. You will find that people can misunderstand the brief, which might lead you to tweak the wording as you progress. What should you look out for? People sending you fake submissions in the form of images taken from the internet. Do a reverse image search if you are suspicious. People asking for half the payment upfront, and then disappearing without a trace! Upwork has a limit on the number of people you can hire per day. It is 100 people per day – so be selective with your hiring. Over time certain countries will be easier to fulfil, e.g. Poland, India, and Ukraine, because there are more freelancers based there, whereas places like Iceland or New Zealand may be harder to reach. You will brief some people and then they will fall off the face of the planet. But don’t worry – you won’t lose your money as they have not submitted the work. Just move on and hire someone else. How much should you pay your freelancers? This is especially difficult to gauge when working with freelancers worldwide. $10 may mean a lot more to people in some countries than it does in others. People per hour has a $9 minimum spend. On Fiver people offer their services for as little as $5. Freelancers have the option to ask for more money for a job. You can then decide by viewing their portfolio if you think the increased fee is worth it. For a short survey or a few photographs that should take a respondent no more than 15 minutes, we pay $10. Due to the low value of these mini-jobs the quality is not always amazing, but that is to be expected. Just increase the number of submissions you collect to compensate for the bad ones. How should you manage your relationship with freelancers? Make sure you build a relationship. Be human: use your first name. Check in to see if they have any questions. Check availability ahead of time. Create a spreadsheet of those with the strongest skills by country. Having a database is then useful for future projects. How did it work with the Admiral project? We gathered over 50+ submissions for a project that only required 20 participants, so we could ensure a good spread of high-quality submissions. We hired two participants for each country we wanted to feature. A truly ‘world’ overview should have at least a few submissions per continent. The fridges campaign included: Argentina, Bangladesh, Bulgaria, Colombia, Ecuador, England, Finland, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico, Pakistan, Palestinian Territories, Poland, Romania, Russia, Ukraine, United States, Uruguay, Venezuela and Wales. What to look out for in image quality? Don’t accept images with an overhead glare. People cutting out images: in other cultures, sparkly, white cut out images are on trend, so stress that this is not what you are looking for. Things in images that are not right for your client’s brand, e.g. alcohol or risque clothing. If you are showing a world overview there will be disparities in wealth, cleanliness, and even the technology that people have available to take photos with. This should be explained to a client upfront, but you should also be sensitive to these differences. Good image examples
Poor quality image examples
What about permissions and licenses? Contractually, once work is paid for, the rights to that belong to you, the purchaser. If other people besides the freelancer you are working with are in the photo, they must ask anyone featured for permission before photographing them. Mention this in your brief. Any tips on promotion? When outreaching to different countries publications they will want their country to be included in the list. If you have not been able to get a submission from a specific country you can always ask a publication to take their own photo, this worked well for us with Daily Mail Australia. Turn your assets into grids, so there are large assets that essentially include the whole piece to share. Make sure there is a human element to your photos, we connect most with other faces. If you have enough submissions keep some back so journalists have exclusives.
To conclude, yes, it can be a hard slog. But it is also a great way to gather low-cost, original content from a diverse range of people, and we’ve found that this, in turn, fuels some great stories and coverage.
