Day 3: Brotherhood/ Death

Sarah Alexis Winters sniffed, wiping at her eyes. She stared at the onyx black coffin in front of her, draped in a UNSC Marine Corps flag.

A teenage girl walked up next to her and took her hand, squeezing it gently. “It’s ok, Mom. He’s in a better place now. Away from this awful war.”

Sarah nodded, still sniffing and turned to hug the teen. “I know, Wendy. I know. I just...” And then she burst into tears, shaking in her daughter’s arms.

Wendy Peyton Winters sighed softly, rubbing her mother’s back as she sobbed. She herself was sad, but her father had sacrificed himself for the greater good of holding back the Covenant onslaught. She understood that.

Wendy’s brows furrowed.

“Hey, you can’t be here!”

That was the voice of the graveyard keeper.

“Are you gonna stop us?”

Silence.

“I thought so.”

Looking over her shoulder, Wendy’s eyes widened at the sight of nine fully armored Marines marching down the small path towards her and her mother. They marched in a single line, the rear eight carried rifles, and the leader carried a pair of combat boots and a helmet.

As the Marines reached them, Sarah finally calmed down and turned to look at the Marines with sad eyes. “Sarah and Wendy Winters?” The leader asked.

Sarah opened her mouth to respond, but only managed a whimper. Wendy gently took her hand and nodded. “Yes, Sir. Who are you?”

The Marine took a deep breath. “I’m Staff Sergeant Elliot Reynolds. Gideon’s Commanding Officer. These are the remaining members of Gideon’s unit,” He jerked his head backwards at the eight other Marines. “Third Platoon, Delta Company, 5th Battalion, 12th Marines. I’ve come to ask if you would allow us to preform a small service for him.”

“I.. yes, of course.” Sarah nodded quickly.

Elliot rested the pair of boots by the front of the empty coffin. Then he placed the helmet on the ground, and took the rifle from his Corporal, placing it between the boots and then standing up. Resting his gloved hand on the onyx black coffin, he sighed. “May the road rise to meet you,”

“Move it maggots! Double time! The Split-Lips won’t wait for your slow asses to be ready before burning you to a crisp with heavy plasma cannons!” Bullets from assault rifles whizzed overhead as the new recruits crawled- no, swam through 6 foot deep mud with electrified barbed wire. Not even two hours ago the bus load of three hundred recruits arrived at MCRD Casbah. Now they were slogging through mud with rifle-fire tearing over their heads. In short, they were terrified.

Hours later when they were finally given time to rest, a young Elliot turned to the fellow teen who’d helped him through a particularly difficult section. Offering him a hand, he spoke: “Elliot Reynolds.”

The other teenager shook his hand firmly. “Gideon Winters.”

“May the wind be at your back,”

“Here they come!” Rifles roared to life as Covenant light armor emerged from the valley. A Scorpion MBT rolled forward and unleashed a barrage of rockets from a makeshift missile battery that engineers had mounted on the heavy tank.

Elliot and Gideon stood side-by-side, firing their rifles at advancing Covenant troops. A Fuel Rod blast zipped towards the two young Marines and Elliot tackled Gideon. “Get down!”

The radioactive missile went flying behind them and detonated harmlessly in a cluster of boulders. Gideo looked at Elliot as the then-Private pulled him to his feet. “Thanks brother.”

“And May the warriors of morrow fight in your ever-lasting honor. Brother. Rest In Peace, Sergeant Gideon Tyler Winters. Semper Fi, Marine.” And then Elliot grabbed two corners of the Marine Corps flag, his Corporal taking the other two, and they folded it into a neat triangle before Elliot gently handed it to Gideon’s wife, who whimpered you’re keep from crying and took it slowly.

Taking a step back, Elliot squares his shoulders, then barked: “Detail, present arms!”

The seven remaining Marines all aimed their rifles at a 45 degree angle towards the sky.

“Salute!” He raised his right hand to just above his right eye in a salute; His Corporal did the same. The riflemen all pulled the trigger once, each of the seven firing a single bullet into the air.

“Salute!” Another volley of seven bullets.

Wendy and Sarah were dumbstruck. They’d never expected this.

“Salute!” A third volley.

Only then did the two women catch on.

They’d just performed an adhoc 21-gun salute. Three volleys of seven bullets was 21. The 21-gun salute was one of the highest honors of the military. Sure, it wasn’t official, but to the Winters family, it would be treasured for decades to come.

“Semper Fi, Brother.”

Now, the elephant in the room - Damian’s fiance, Natalya. Now that the circumstances have changed, you would expect him to not have killed her, right? Well, no. That’s very wrong.

Natalya, because of her healing magic, was recruited to be a military medic. Out on the field, she was trying to save people on both sides. This, of course, put her in the line of sight for one the Adhoc Spore corpses that Damian controlled. And, as he was still getting a hang of trying to control multiple bodies at once, he was too late in trying to stop it... making his own fiance part of the spore’s hivemind, killing her slowly from the inside out as the mold spread through her and hollowed her insides until she was nothing but a shell. 

It was a slow and painful death.
