Farming - Adewale Akinnuoye- Agbaje (2018)

Farming follows the life of a Nigerian boy who is farmed out to a cockney family in 60's London as he struggles through the prejudices of the time and tries to find his own identity. 

The idea of farming out children is an intreresting phenomenon, probably more so because then motivations for it aren't addressed in the film, for some reason. That is quite a problem as very little of anybody's motivations are explained or even hinted at. Also, despite the strong performances from lead Damson Idris and Kate Beckinsale as his surrogate mother, far too much of it comes across as cartoonish and intentionally provocative rather than being honest or probing. It just falls a bit flat, and unbelievable...again, due to the lack of motivation.

Interesting but underwhelming.

SUICIDE SQUAD

It follows the aftermath of Superman’s death and the turmoil the country is facing. Out of desperation, US intelligence officer Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) decides to assemble a team of dangerous, incarcerated supervillains who are expendable and not missed by society for a top-secret mission. Amanda dubbed this team as ‘Task Force X’. This movies shows a brief history of the individual characters and why they are the way they are and got to be where they are. Deadshot (Will Smith) was a hired hitman who never misses a shot, Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) was a decent psychiatrist until The Joker (Jared Leto) got into her head and now psychotic person who fears nothing and is madly in love and a great companion of The Joker, Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney) a talented boomerang thrower, where his boomerangs are equipped with incendiaries that destroys his targets and Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) who looks like a reptile of some sort but possess the traits of a crocodile and kills like one and able to live in sewers and Slipknot (Adam Beach) a specialised assassin. The team are equipped with powerful arsenal equipment but also chipped with an explosive in their neck should they get out of control with one hit of a button. The team soon realise that they were chosen not to succeed and that their mission is pretty much suicidal hence ‘Suicide Squad’. Will the Suicide Squad die trying or decide to try their luck and cunningly find a way to disarm that lethal chip in their necks and flee the mission now with the most powerful firearms the government has provided them with?

BILAL - A NEW BREED OF HERO (2015) Impossible d’avoir entendu parler de BILAL, film d’animation 3D arabe, sorti à Dubai fin 2015: en effet, le long-métrage a mis sept ans à voir le jour -une durée justifiée par la longue documentation studieuse pour le créer ainsi qu’aux détails apportés à celui-ci-, jusqu’à ce que son réalisateur Ayman Jamal fonde lui-même Barajoun Entertainment en 2013 afin de lui donner vie. Une persistance rare, qui paye: véritable chef-d’oeuvre unique, le travail que représente BILAL est incontestablement une réussite totale. Loin de PIXAR, loin de DISNEY, on y trouve une approcher relativement soignée, que l’on devine dûe à un challenge constant: le résultat est superbe -pour un film de 2015 auquel nous n’avons accès que TROIS ANS plus tard-, diffusant une sagesse sensée et un message très fort. Enfant, Bilal et sa sœur sont victimes du meurtre de leur mère -une ouverture résolument adulte-, et deviennent les esclaves de Umayyah Ibn Khalaf, un souverain conservateur régnant sur le Hedjaz, la réfgion ouest de la péninsule arabique. Cette action placée en 600 av. J-C diffuse cette saveur orientale typique du monde arabe, avec ses lumières chatoyantes, son atmosphère désertique, et son charme naturel -malgré le contexte de l’esclavagisme, au centre du récit-: BILAL le sait, et profite de tout ce qui à trait à cette culture pour la sublimer, des tentures magnifiques aux couleurs vives en passant par ces visages bourrés d’émotion. Loin des PIXAR/DISNEY caricaturaux -voire racistes- au possible, BILAL s’identifie, ne reniant pas certains schémas “physiques” -quelques traits sont accentués, comme les nez bosselés et les grands yeux, mais pas assez pour en devenir génériques: ce film d’animation d’exception détient une chara-design légitime, et une direction artistique plus que cohérente. L’histoire de Bilal, puissante, va nous apprendre ce qu’est un vrai héros, loin du guerrier nourrissant les rêves de cet enfant devenu esclave: il sera ici défini par la liberté du corps et de l’âme, inaccessible portail imaginaire pour tout esclave de cette époque. L’aspect païen semble pointé du doigt, avec de Hedjaz dominé par des marchands sans scrupules et un cruel seigneur: il faut verser des pièces aux idoles et les vénérer, ces multiples statuettes aux effigies divines diverses et variées, sans oublier de conserver cette voie quoi qu’il en coûte. BILAL profite de ce fait établi -scénaristiquement- pour chambouler cette démence en introduisant le “roi des marchands”, Abu Bakr, que Bilal rencontrera une fois adulte: germes de la liberté, ses échanges avec le vieil homme lui ouvriront l’esprit, convaincu par un islam mené par un dieu unique, Allah, car ce dernier ne prônant pas l’esclavagisme mais l’égalité et la liberté de l’Homme. BILAL a le bon goût de ne pas utiliser l’épique pour rien: les visions métaphoriques seront représentées par de magnifiques séquences éloquentes -ces géants de sable crachant du feu-, pour devenir réelles afin de servir un véritable propos -la bataille finale-. Mais le véritable sens de BILAL réside dans ce combat intérieur, cette évolution spirituelle -non religieuse et non sectaire, l’Islam servant de moteur décisif pour notre héros- qui dépasse le stade de l’imaginaire pour que Bilal passe à l’acte, vers sa quête d’homme libre. Une scénario mature, auquel rien n’est laissé au hasard: parfois très dures, certaines scènes sont à déconseiller aux plus jeunes -la torture publique avec ce gros rocher, par exemple-. Ne vous laissez pas berner par l’aspect “dessin animé en CGI”, BILAL n’est pas pour les enfants: en parlant de rendu visuel, l’ensemble est vraiment beau, même si on dénote -rarement!- une animation un peu “brusque” lors des mouvements de chute au sol. Hormis ce détail, BILAL dispose d’une synchro labiale correcte -en anglais en V.O.-, d’un doublage au top, d’une musique géniale - le compositeur Atli Örvarsson s’en donne à cœur joie: l’islandais avait signé le sublime OST de THE EAGLE (2011)- saisissant parfaitement l’atmosphère arabisante du film, et surtout d’une narration surprenante, aux antipodes de ce que l’on peut attendre de son poster cinéma. BILAL n’est pas q’un “film d’animation en 3D de plus”, mais bel et bien un grand récit, inspiré lui-même de la vie du vrai Bilal, Bilal Ibn Rabah -580-640 av. J-C-, l’un -si ce n’est le premier- Muezzin de l’Histoire à lancer l’appel de la prière. Icônique, l’homme enseignait de son temps l’importance de l’égalité raciale, de la paix, et l’idée de rester soudés, ensemble, afin de combattre toute forme de discrimination.
