There are various opinions on #flexibility vs #mobility. Flexibility refers to the passive and active lengthening of muscles that enable movement and motion. Mobility refers to the range of motion or articulation of a joint can move before the supporting and surrounding tissue of that joint restricts further motion. Therefore lengthening the muscles does not guarantee mobility if lengthening the muscle is the only focus. Strengthening by stability and controlled movement can create new pathways that allow the joint further articulation. Understanding where two bones meet in the joint and what the tendons and ligaments are doing can enable purposeful progression of mobility . One may touch their toes by bending down and lengthening the hamstrings yet this does not guarantee nor necessarily assist in a deep squat or hurdlers stretch. Mobility training would then work on conditioning the nervous system and surrounding tissue to lengthen or relax in such ignored areas of stretching such as the hips . Flexibility would assist in the muscles that are most involved in extension and flexion. As extension is responsible for increasing the inner angle of the joint.Flexion decreases the angle between the bones that converge at the joint. In either case as muscle contracts a balance to that will be a muscle relaxes.The lengthening and shortening will then be affected by flexibility.
