The Iliad Plague
Honestly I am disappointed at how little we talk about the Iliad plague that was sent by Apollo in the first rhapsody of the Iliad to the Greeks after Chryses, Apollo's priest, begged for justice for the disrespect Agamemnon showed him plus the fact that his daughter was not returned to him.
"First he stroke the mules and the swift dogs but then he shot his shafts to the humans themselves and the funeral pyres were burning non-stop and crowded and for nine days the army was being assaulted by the God's arrows"
(Translation by me)
So we basically get that the plague spread to animals first and then swiftly passed to humans and it became deadly very quickly.
It seems like a classic case of an assault of the bacteria Yersina which is responsible for three major plagues; the bubonic, septisemic and pneumonic plagues. All three seem to be associated with transmission from animals to humans. In this case my random guess would be that this would be the case or a pneumonic plague. It transmits from the breathing of fumes and it is much easier transmittable from one person to another given that both other plagues require the mix of bodily fluids. Since the disease seems to strike animals commonly not associated with food like mules or dogs it seems more probable the disease was of a lung nature.
The main symptoms of a pneumonic plague are:
Fever
Headaches
Shortness of breath
Chest pain
Intense coughing
Hemoptysis (aka "coughing out blood")
It seems indeed highly probable that the plague was of such nature which would lead to a large number of soldiers suffer from headaches and fever which gradually got worse and added coughing chest pain and coughing out blood (the other plagues have also intense vomiting-boubonic- and blood infection -septisemic-). Various post-homeric and mainly early Roman sources speak on the contributing of Palamedes suggesting better diet and exercise countering the effects of the plague or preventing it. Although traditionally we know plagues can be effectively cured with the use of antibiotics it is probable that the mention of cardio exercise could be a wink that a good cardio system can defend itself against lung diseases.
Either way it surprises me that the losses of war when studied rarely mention the results of this plague since many people count only the deaths in battle and not this which is ironically the only set of deaths seemingly affecting only the Greek side. It is interesting given how many times cities being surrounded by armies are the first to suffer from diseases rather than the people outside (although both sides suffer eventually from diseases). Realistically speaking we do understand why we see so many mentions of diseases.
And again when it comes to the sequel Odyssey as well, very few people consider not only the losses Odysseus undoubtedly suffered in battle but also one should expect he lost a man or two from the plague as well (mind you I can easily imagine some kings also being affected by it at least at early stage especially the less vigorous such as Nestor because of age or Menelaus if we take my headcannon that he probably was a bit frail of health later as I mentioned to the post tagging @thehelplessmortals which could indeed back up more how careful Helen was with him since plagues do affect massively the health of lungs or heart permanently
More vigorous and fighting fit characters like Achilles or Diomedes or Odysseus and Agamemnon seemed less likely to have been stroke by the plague. Achilles is also the one who calls upon council of kings to find a solution.
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
During my collaboration with @artsofmetamoor I always entertain the thought of disease to the various war camps. Disease would often be the most common way soldiers died instead of battles.
In our stories our characters suffer a lot of many things but this also makes me do a note to self to refer more on plagues or diseases

Art Advice #10 - Art Language 101
Hi everyone!
I think that artists often forget that the ‘artist bubble’ exists with its own language that a lot of non-artists, or beginner artists, don’t understand.
Something that highlighted this for me is when my friends were constantly confused when I tag my work in progress sketches as ‘wip’ lol...
So I’ve writing this as a sort of ‘guide’ to some of the common terms and abbreviations that you may see art-y people talk about & feel too embarrassed to ask them what they mean!
This will probably be a post I’ll be coming back to and adding to as time goes on and I discover new terms btw!
(also feel free to send my suggestions to add to this in the replies or in an ask!)
Art Language 101
(these are in alphabetical order to make it easier for you to search btw!)
Abstract - This is artworks that don’t depict anything in particular. This is the opposite of Figurative, basically (scroll to see that definition).
Alpha Value - This refers to the opacity level of an image, so an image with an alpha value of 0 will be transparent, whereas 1 is opaque. This is often used more in editing, I believe.
Art Fight - A challenge essentially where you can sign up and draw other artists’ original characters & they’ll draw yours (and I believe there’s a sort of scoring system but most people I’ve talked to about it just use it as a way to share art with each other).
CMYK - Stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black, and these set of primary colours are usually specifically used in printing. (not to be confused with RGB or RYB, which are two other colour systems).
Chiaroscuro - A term referring to paintings with extreme contrast of light and shadow (the Baroque artist Caravaggio is a well known example of this). (a note: Tenebrism refers to the extreme version of chiaroscuro, but is often less used).
Clipping Mask - This is a digital art term which refers to an area you’ve selected where you can only draw on that section. (It basically acts as digital masking tape, making sure you only draw in the areas you want.)
Composition - This is how an artwork is put together and where things go in the canvas in order to make it look ‘pleasing’. (Although not all artists go for a pleasing composition, and a composition can change the entire mood of a piece.)
Contour - This essentially refers to the outline of an image which can help give the image depth.
Contrapposto - Often used for sculptures, this refers to a person posing with their hip up and torso twisted slightly, since in Antiquity and the Renaissance it was seen as the most ‘natural’ looking pose to sculpt. (an example of this pose would be Michelangelo’s David).
Dtiys - Stands for Draw This In Your Style, a popular challenge where artists draw other artists’ work in their own style.
En plein air - A technique pioneered by the Impressionist painters in late 19th century, refers to painting things (particularly landscape) whilst outside.
Figurative - This means depictions of perceptible things, such as people, objects, places, etc.
Filters - These are often called ‘Blending Options’, where each option (such as multiply, subtract, burn, etc) will make the layer above effect the layer below in certain ways. These can be really fun to play around with if you’re just getting into digital!
Hue - This refers to the specific shade of colour.
Impasto - This is essentially thick layers of paint used in traditional paintings, often giving a piece texture and dimension.
Inktober - A popular challenge in October where people draw in ink for the entire month based on various prompt lists. Drawtober is another popular October challenge.
Line Economy - This is something that some artists adopt, the idea of using as few lines in a drawing as possible.
Mermay - A popular challenge in May where artists draw Mermaids.
Mesh - This is an overlay you can apply to an object in digital art, where you can use the mesh tool to easily manipulate the colour of it.
Motif - These are symbols that are commonly used in art as shorthand for meaning something. So for example, skulls in a lot of paintings in history are often used to reference death.
Naturalism - This refers to artwork that’s made to reflect nature, often seen as the opposite of Idealistic paintings (it basically embraces the wonkiness of nature and how things are often messy in nature). Not to be confused with Realism, which is similar but more interested in representation?
OC - Stands for Original Character.
Occlusion - This is a technique to create depth, where objects are hidden behind other surfaces.
Photorealism - A style of painting that aims to look like a photo. Similar to Hyper-realism, although that often goes for even more detail.
Relief - This is a sculptural term which refers to sculpture that sits on a flat base.
Render / Rendering - This is the act of drawing/interpreting a particular concept or image. It’s often used in art spaces as referring to detailed and complete images, but it’s honestly kind of just a fancy way of saying ‘drawing’ lol...
Radial Shading - This is basically the way a sphere, or other round 3D objects, should be shaded in order to make them look more realistic.
Realism - This is essentially an art style that wants to represent the natural world. It’s often seen as the opposite of ‘Stylised’.
RGB - Stands for Red, Green and Blue, and is usually used when you want to mix coloured lights together (and is also primarily the colour system that computers use). (not to be confused with RYB or CMYK)
RYB - Stands for Red, Yellow and Blue, typically what we know as primary colours and usually used when traditionally painting. (not to be confused with RGB or CMYK)
Saturation - This refers to the vibrancy/strength of the colour. Less saturated colours become greyscale.
Sfumato - Technique of shading specifically pioneered by Leonardo Da Vinci, it basically translates as ‘smoke’ and is about using shading to create no harsh lines but instead a smooth transition.
Specular - This is when an object is so smooth that you can see the reflection obviously, whereas less specular objects will have a diffused light reflection.
Stabiliser - Used in digital art, this is how you can control how ‘smooth’ your brush strokes are. It basically slows down the brush so you can take more time on a stroke.
Tangents - This is essentially a ‘rule’ in art that when drawing you shouldn’t have your lines intersect into the same point.
Stylised - Art that has a distinctive look to it, often specific to a particular artist, often associated with cartoons or animation. It’s usually seen as the opposite of realism, since it adjusts the real world to fit a unique style.
Uncanny Valley - Not specifically an art term, but one you often here associated with art. This is when art looks like a distorted version of reality. Hyper-realistic paintings can often have this affect, leading to some very creepy effects.
Value - This essentially refers to how light or dark a colour is. It’s often used in conjunction with Tone, but it’s a contentious subject which I’m not going to get into here... really all we need to know is that they both refer to the lightness and darkness scale of a colour.
Wip - Stands for Work In Progress.
Zine - Shortened version of Magazine, but often refers to smaller independent magazines or fanzines (including fanart, etc).
#art advice#art language#art language 101#artist advice#advice#artist#note: i barely understand some of these so if the descriptions are bad i'm... sorry#i just want to give people a chance to vaguely understand some of these things#definitely give them a google if you want to know more detail! or ask me lol

Hello would you mind if I can reblog this post? Also I love your work and it looks really great!
I’m not sure which post you’re referring to but YES!! All of the posts on my blog are free to be reblogged unless they are explicitly tagged “do not reblog”.
The post I made about reposting vs. reblogging really took off which is good because it’s really important for people to understand the difference and know that they’re not the same, BUT it wasn't worded super clearly so here’s a more in-depth breakdown:
reblog: using Tumblr’s built-in reblog button
this makes a copy of the post and puts it on your blog(s) for your followers to see and interact with
it still links back to the original poster (OP), best found through the source link at the bottom of the post, as well as anyone who has added a reblog comment
the source link can also be an external link if the OP's blog is sharing from another site, i.e. Twitter or Instagram
this is GOOD because if people enjoy the creator’s content, they can easily access their blog/landing page and see more
all of the likes/replies/reblog comments from any reblog still appear on the original post and so are accessible to the OP
very similar to the retweet function on Twitter except that if the OP deletes their original post or blog, all of the reblogs on other people’s blogs still exist
PLEASE REBLOG!! it’s the main feature of Tumblr and it’s how content creators on the site have their work(s) spread around!! unless the OP has explicitly stated that they do NOT want people to reblog their post(s), it’s probably safe to assume that it’s okay to do so
repost: to download, save, screenshot, or otherwise rip a post’s content and upload it in a new post on another blog, website, etc.
BAD! do not do this without asking the creator first (usually the OP) and getting permission to do so
this means getting an EXPLICIT “yes” and following any other requirements like linking back to the original post, linking the creator’s website/blog, etc.
why is reposting not okay? because it separates the work from the creator and actively makes it harder for people to access the creator’s works
this is a major tactic for “content farms” on places like Instagram where people will steal other people’s work and sometimes profit from uploading it, gaining tons of interactions without ever having to compensate the person who actually made it
if you want to use someone’s art as a profile picture or header (on Tumblr or elsewhere), ask permission as well! some people may not want their art used for this, or may not be legally allowed to say yes
if you do get permission, make sure to still follow any other requirements they set (i.e. credit in your profile’s description)
I’m gonna put some common reposting defenses and what usually does and does not count as reposting under the cut!
Common defenses for reposting:
“I just wanted to share it!”
if you’re reposting to Tumblr... just reblog it. Please.
if it’s outside of Tumblr, you still gotta ask for permission bud, sorry
also, there actually is a share button for Tumblr posts! the button used for sending a post to a Tumblr DM also has share options (the right-facing arrow near Like/Reblog at the bottom of the post). It will create a new post for you on your platform of choice and will link back to the Tumblr post. If you MUST share something outside of Tumblr, at least use this
it also has a very handy “copy link” button so you can grab a direct link to the post
this will, however, grab the link to whichever blog you are seeing it from; I’d recommend doing the extra step of going to the OP’s blog and copying that link
“the OP doesn’t have an XYZ account and I wanted to share it there”
check again
if you're sure they don't, ask for permission, including where you want to post it
use the Tumblr share feature
copy the Tumblr link and add it into the post! hyperlinks (embedding a link in a line of text) are a good way to still link back to the OP while also keeping a post looking "clean"
at the very least, make sure you link back to the creator somehow!
“I don’t remember who made it”
reverse-image Google search! though this can be made unhelpful if it’s a commonly reposted piece (another negative effect of reposting)
if you still don’t remember then maybe? take it down! at the end of the day, it is not yours to post
"the OP deactivated and I still wanna share it!"
unfortunately, that's just the way it is sometimes 😔
if you still have access to a reblog of the post, share that instead!
If you have the ability to go through the trouble of saving and reuploading someone else’s work to anther place, at least go the extra mile and link back to the creator, please
What ISN’T reposting?
sharing something in a DM/text with a friend or group chat (though if you’re doing that, might as well throw in a link to the post too)
using art as a profile picture or header (WITH PERMISSION)
reblogging using the reblog button
Basically, at the end of the day, what's most important is to properly credit/cite the creator. Embed a link, tag them, etc., anything that makes it easier for people to find the creator of the content that you're sharing because it means that you're helping other people find and follow creators you like too!
#ari answers#anonymous#reposting#long post#text#not art#ramblings#this got really long anon sorry#its not meant to be directed only at you lmao i wanted to add on/clarify the other post and this was a perfect opportunity#reblog dont repost!!!#and make sure to ask creators for permission to use their works#ALSO THANK YOU ANON THAT MEANS A LOT ;O;

How popular is MadaSaku in context of other Madara’s and Sakura’s ships? Part 2 - revamped
Thank you @purple-possibilities for your suggestions about searches of multi-words phrases on ff.net. Putting the phrase between quotation marks worked and I could include 4 additional phrases into searches for each ship!
Additionally, I noticed and error! Grrrr... Even though I took under consideration that Tobisaku may mean Tobirama x Sakura and Obito x Sakura, later on I switched from manual to automatic layout of formulas in my excel. And, of course, automatic layout had no clue about Obito/Tobi thing...
So, important errata: Tobirama had only 13 fics (as opposed to 31 which I reported) according to Ship Names Searches. I corrected it also in the original post.
I’m posting the improved version below, but for those who are not into reading this again: Including additional Ship Names in my search didn’t change much. Lee and Ino switched places 6th and 7th, Madara x OC ship gained a lot of entries, but not enough for a position change, and that’s basically it.
Finding the popularity of ships on ff.net is both easier and more complicated, depending how do you approach the problem.
Let’s break down the task into two parts.
Approach 1
FF.net has a Pairing Option that was introduced in October 2013. This function makes the names of characters appear in square bracket, for example: [Madara U., Sakura H.] indicating that those characters form a romantic pair in a given fic.
When using Filters (Figure 1.a.) after choosing the character of interest, one can tick the Pairing Option, and then browse (using up and down arrows) through all the characters of the fandom. The number of fics tagged with Pairing Option between the character of interest (here: Madara) and every character B (here: Sakura) appear on the bottom of the panel (Figure 1.b.).
Data gathered through browsing through all of the Naruto characters with Pairing Option On give unequivocal results. The only limitations of this method is the relatively late introduction time point of Pairing Option (introduced in 2013, while Naruto started publishing in 1999), and sometimes peculiar definitions of “Characters” on ff.net (example: Naruko as a separate character, “Team 7” as a “Character”).
Results for Madara and Sakura are presented below (Figures 2. and 3.) For clarity, ships with four or more fics are shown for Madara. In case of Sakura, all the ships with >4 fics in a graph would blur the picture. Therefore, her Top 20 ships are presented in Figure 3., and the rest is summarized in the Table 1. The analysis was performed on 22.10.2019.
However, ff.net was launched on 15.10.1998 (which precedes publication of Naruto by one year) so there is a 14 year-worth of fic creation when the Pairing Option wasn’t available. To get the complete overview of ship popularity it is necessary to include the body of work created in the earlier years of ff.net.
This issue was addressed through Approach 2.
Approach 2
During the period of 1998-2013 fics were labelled with ship names in the summaries, and readers would look for ships of interest typing ship name into the search box. During those times certain conventional phrases were coined for the ships, and putting those in the summary allowed potential readers to find the story. Searching ff.net using selected phrases and collecting the corresponding fic numbers gives insight into those part of fanworks. Employment of search engine is shown in Figure 4. on the example of phrase “madasaku”.
I performed searches for common ships, basing the list on the ships with 4 or more fics as found using Pairing Option (see: section above).
I searched for the phrases that were and still are still commonly used ship names in Naruto fandom.
In general, there are three common ways to indicate a ship:
a) Merger of names, usually using first two syllables of both names, usually (but not always) with male name being first part of the phrase. Example: madasaku, and (less commonly used) sakumada. For the M/M and F/F couples, both orders are used, and it is impossible to predict which form is more common. Example: sakuhina and hinasaku would be used with similar frequency. In case of names composed of two syllables or shorter, one syllable is often used.
b) Name_1xName_2 – complete names of characters separated by letter “x”, without spaces in between. There is no strict preference as to which name goes first more frequently, i.e. sakuraxmadara is equally plausible as madaraxsakura.
The same naming scheme exists also in a version with spaces (example: Madara x Sakura). Searching for such phrases (and all phrases including spaces) required putting the Ship Name between quotation marks (”Madara x Sakura”).
c) A combination of the above, i.e. shortened versions of names connected with an “x”; with spaces (example: mada x saku) and without spaces (madaxsaku - again searched using apostrophes)
Search engine of ff.net is case-insensitive, i.e. searching for “madasaku” will bring the same results as searching for “Madasaku” and “MadaSaku” (thank gods).
Naming convention that is common on AO3, i.e. separating character names with slash “/”, isn’t correctly recognized by search engine. If the phrase is written without usage of spaces (example: Madara/Sakura) the search results in list of fics containing “Madara” and “Sakura”, not necessary together (slash symbol gets ignored). When phrase “Madara/Sakura” is searched with quotation marks, slash still gets ignored and results include all entries with any symbol between the names. Therefore, the ship names weren’t included in this analysis.
Other potential ship names variations (using “*”, using “&”, and surely a multitude of others variants that I couldn’t think of) were not included due to their relative infrequency (and limits to my capacity and imagination).
For every ship included in the results of Approach 1 (total 43 searches for Sakura’s ships, and 12 searches for Madara’s ships), I searched for the following phrases (on example of MadaSaku ship):
madasaku
sakumada
madaraxsakura
sakuraxmadara
madaxsaku
sakuxmada
madara x sakura
sakura x madara
mada x saku
saku x mada
Certain ship names don’t follow the usual rules and/or required special treatment. For example, for the ship Gaara/Haruno Sakura the common name merger is GaaSaku (and not GaaraSaku). Tsunade/ Haruno Sakura is equally often (or rarely, because it is very rare) abbreviated to TsuSaku and Tsunasaku. Fics tagged with TobiSaku name merger may mean Senju Tobirama/Haruno Sakura as well as Tobi (Obito’s persona)/Haruno Sakura – in this case, fics were manually inspected, and assigned to correct categories. Ship with Naruko (which scored relatively high in Pairing Option analysis), was not possible to correctly assess, because the merger name “narusaku” is identical for the merger of Uzumaki Naruto/Haruno Sakura (for good reasons).
All the fics for given pair were summed up (i.e. for Uchiha Madara/Haruno Sakura ship the fic numbers retrieved through searches for “madasaku”, “sakumada”, “madaraxsakura”, “sakuraxmadara”, “madaxsaku”, “sakuxmada” “madara x sakura”, “sakura x madara”, “mada x saku” and “saku x mada” were added together). The obtained results will be referred to as those of “Ship Name” in this analysis.
Results for Madara and Sakura are presented below (Figures 5. and 6.). In case of Sakura, including all the examined ships in a graph would blur the picture. Therefore, her Top 20 ships are presented in Figure 6., and the rest is summarized in the Table 2. The analysis was performed on 22.10.2019. The additionally searches performed on 31.12.2019 did not take under consideration fics published after 22.10.2019, to reflect the state of fandom on the day of main analysis.
This list presented in Table 2 is not a comprehensive one. There are certainly more ships with >10 fics that were not included. One prominent, detected example is Chōji, who has 13 fics in as a ship partner of Sakura, but was not included in Table 2 because according to the Pairing Option he had no fics with Sakura.
Limitations of the method
Employed method depends on performing six independent searches and summing up the numbers from those searches. A fic tagged with more than one of the searched phrases will be counted multiple times. For example: if a fic contained phrases “MadaSaku” and “MadaraxSakura” in its summary, it was counted twice. In extreme case, one fic would generate ten data points: one real, and nine false.
Nevertheless, since the same treatment was applied to all the pairings, the errors should be distributed in the same way across all the ships. Therefore, even if the numerical values obtained through this analysis don’t necessarily correspond to reality, the results should reflect respective relations between the ships (i.e. “ranking” should be correct). This assumption is true however only if all the subdivisions of the fandom follow the same customs and tagging etiquette. I.e. if creators writing for SasuSaku followed a habit of including only one Ship Name in their summaries, while creators of MadaSaku tended to include multiple Ship Names, then my method of analysis would overestimate the significance of MadaSaku ship. However, I am not aware about such trends existing in Naruto fandom.
Additionally, Ship Name tagging system allows for tagging infinite number of ships in one fic, therefore certain fics have been counted multiple times.
Discussion
When considering fics tagged with Pairing Option, Sakura ranks as Madara’s second most popular ship partner, after Hashirama and before Tobirama. As on AO3, it is telling that a relatively “exotic” pairing with OC ranks 4th among Madara’s ships.
Madara is the 9th most popular ship partner of Sakura. Comparing and contrasting Sakura’s data between ff.net and AO3 would be an interesting analysis in its own right, but here I will only point out the switch of positions between Naruto and Kakashi as Sakura’s ship partners (Naruto is a strong 2nd on ff.net, while Kakashi takes this position on AO3); and relatively low, 7th place of Ino (strong 4th on AO3).
When taking into account data gathered though Ship Names Searches, Sakura ranks as Madara’s 2nd most popular ship partner (after Hashirama and before OC).
Madara, on the other hand is Sakura’s 15th most popular ship partner. Since Ship Names Searches results are mostly derived from fics published in earlier years in Naruto fandom, his lower place can be explained by his very late appearance in the franchise (on-panel in February 2008 - almost 9 years after Naruto started publishing and in person in the story in October 2011 - 12 years after begin of publishing).
Data gathered in this analysis present a unique opportunity for looking into the development of ship popularity over time.
Results from Pairing Option reflect mostly the state of fandom in years 2013-2019, while the results from Ship Names Search show the status from the earlier years. The exact division is however somewhat blurred as some fics published before October 2013 has been retroactively tagged using Pairing Option (even if the majority of older fics remain untagged). The reverse is also true – many fics published after introduction of Pairing Option, even as recently as end of 2019, fail to use it. Additionally, many fics are tagged using both systems: the Pairing Option and Ship Name in summary.
Nevertheless one can tentatively regard Pairing Option results as “new”, or “current” ones, while the ones coming from the Ship Names Searches as “older” ones.
Figure 7. presents position changes in Top 12 Madara’s ships. Ranking from Pairing Option analysis was regarded as current and compared to the “older” ranking composed from all the fics tagged with Ship Names (regardless their publishing date). A positive value in the Figure 7. indicates a gain of popularity, for example: Tobirama gained 2 positions among Madara’s ships when comparing the “current” and “older” results.
This analysis reveals that certain ships (with Tobirama, Naruto and Hinata) gained, while ships with OC and Itachi lost on popularity. Dramatic loss of Itachi ship popularity is very interesting and one can speculated that it could be caused by Tobi/Obito reveal.
The same analysis was performed for Sakura’s ships and is presented in Figure 8.
Inspecting changes in Sakura ships’ rankings allows for several interesting observations. Minato, Shisui, Madara and Sasori are among greater winners. It is symptomatic that all, except Sasori, are characters that appeared (or became relevant) later during the franchise. Among the characters losing in popularity as Sakura’s ship partners are members of Konoha Eleven (Lee, Kiba, Sai, Neji), an Akatsuki member (Deidara) and OC. It should also be noted that five top positions (Sasuke, Naruto, Kakashi, Itachi and Gaara) remained unchanged.
To further examine the “current” and “older” state of fandom, upon harvesting Ship Names data I sorted the fics according to publication date and took note of how many fics were published before and how many after 01.10.2013 (approximate date of introduction of Pairing Option tool).
If one repeats the analysis from Figures 7. and 8. considering only fics published before 01.10.2013 as “older” ones, the following pictures appears (Figure 9. and 10.):
Using this definition of “older” fics (i.e. fics tagged with Ship Names that were published until October 2013), the gain of popularity of Tobirama ship becomes even more evident (gain of 7 positions). Ships with Itachi (as in the previous analysis) and Sasuke (undetected in the previous analysis) lost on popularity.
Sakura ships’ dynamics according to this definition of “older” fics show even more pronounced positions’ gains of Minato and Shisui, but otherwise similar trends to previous analysis.
Analysis of ship popularity on ff.net is a challenging one, but since this platform was, and still is main archive for Naruto fandom (407 thousands fics vs 49 thousand on AO3) it is important to address this issue even if methodology is far from perfect.
I am open to all the comments, suggestions and hints, as the data collection was a major effort and I’m sure that this data can be used in many other different ways.
And, your feedback showed me that people are interested in such stuff. Thank you for this!!! I have at least three further ideas for analysis, and now, when I have some experience and first insight into data, it will be easier.

i’ve got, , , many , , , but let’s go with vulcan & luke ? my top two muses i’ve always got muse for ? vulcan is an engineer, working with the fire fighting brigade ! he adores animals & living beings, & his dream is to bring back the world’s extinct animal, to give back to earth as much as has been taken from it. luke, on the other hand, is a carpenter, who’s always willing to make new friends at any moment & is fond of over exaggerating everything-- be it orders for him to work on, or just life itself !
other muses can be found in their respective bios ( once im done writing them up, anyway ). if you’re interested in one-- even if you might not know them--, hmu at any moment for me to explain the basics for you ! ! i’m always happy to talk about my muses
POINTS OF INTEREST.
going from what was stated earlier, vulcan is pretty strict when it comes to the things he makes ! as soon as he’s done making something, he’ll toss it and / or kick it around-- since something that breaks with ease isn’t a ‘ complete piece ‘ in his opinion. in luke’s case, he’s just a ball of sunshine ! it’s rare to get him down, or to get him to stop interacting with someone-- talking to people is his favourite past time !
WHAT THEY’VE BEEN UP TO.
vulcan’s been hard at work, upgrading gadgets & making new things for his fellow company 8 members to use. the easier he makes the job for them, the more fulfilled he becomes, after all. luke, however, spends it in the forest, hacking away at trees like always ! whenever he’s not chopping a tree down, he’s either making up new axe-related moves or has joined someone for the afternoon.
WHERE TO FIND THEM.
vulcan can either be found at the company 8′s barracks ( either inside the building or outside near the street, since he enjoys working in various different places ), while luke is most commonly found in front of his home or in forests ! or wherever there’s the most people, really.
CURRENT PLANS.
for vulcan it’s to continue being helpful, as well as doing everything he can in order to get even another step closer to his dream ! luke is mostly focused on besting his father, getting him to acknowledge his abilities, as well as acting as a good superior to bo !
DESIRED INTERACTIONS.
OH MAN there’s a lot. for vulcan i’d like for him to interact with more company 8 members ! ! ! with yuu or lisa ! ! ! with other people who enjoy robots / machines / creating things ! ! for luke, i’d like for him to interact with anyone in hm: animal parade / tree of tranquility ! ! or for more owen’s, , & selena’s, , , , or just people in general who’d mesh well with this ball of sunshine
for other muses, i’m adding a ‘ plotting / interaction reference ‘ to each of their bios, in order to give those interested in a certain muse how to interact with them !
OFFERED INTERACTIONS
honestly, , , anything, really. i have such a large variety of muses-- if you want angst, fluff, brotherly / sisterly relationships, unrequited loves,, , i can give them all. i’d be happy to give them all. just give me a holler & we can come up with something that works !
Current open post/s:
i don’t really do opens,, ,since i’m pretty bad at coming up with stuff so very vague, , , so , , , na h
Anything else?:
i’m slow ! i’m lazy ! i have a shitton of muses ! ! it may take me a while to reply to our thread or to reply to im’s, but don’t let that deter you ! just know i’m most likely looking for a chance to reply as soon as possible & am wanting for a chance to speak to you ooc ! !

hey jayce i have a q regarding the npf plugin. i only know the most basic abt html so idrk how to study the code on how to use it. im currently using a theme with pxu photosets. is there anything else i should do aside from copy-pasting? sorry if this is too broad of a question and thanks!
hello, and don't worry about it being a general question! i think it is a proper moment to just write a full tutorial on it, since my instructions may be rather vague at times.
i should point that i might speak directly to theme makers in some aspects of this, but i will try to get back to common users as well.
first of all, which is something not everyone might have thought of at first, make sure your theme is not using any CSS(the name for the code inside the <style> tag) !important rules where it shouldn't, since adding !important beside any value makes it hard to set another styling to neutralize it. i'm saying this because the latest version of this plugin does not use style directly applied to the element itself(that is, instead of adding the styling code inside the <style> tag where it commonly belongs, it is hard coded into the element it refers to, which is located inside the <body> tag, where the mark-up for your blog goes). hard-coding styles into an element made that style harder to be broken by unrelated CSS styling the theme maker might have add, but made it less flexible to people's own styling, which i considered quite a downside. the !important rule was often misused by myself to the point that earlier themes of mine looked wrong with my script because them. therefore, make sure no element involved in the photoset structure, such as .tmblr-full, is abusing of !important styles in your CSS! a quick search for ".tmblr-full" and "figure" should do the trick, though it's very likely these aren't affected by these rules at all; this is just a cautionary step. you may skip it, check your blog and return to it in case it looks weird.
now, we copy all of the code available for copying, which is both the external link to the script and CSS to make it look right as well as the function call(the whole bit with npfPhotosets(...) and a bunch of options inside), and paste it after the entire theme mark-up but before the closing <body> tag, which should appear as </body>; the function call is what makes the script you linked before run, as the link to it alone will do nothing. i want to reiterate that everyone should always look at the original post when doing so since reblogs don't automatically update, and you might be left with an older, buggy version of the script if you're looking at an old reblog.
for the options, some of them are easily ignorable(such as rowClass, since this is a class defined by Tumblr structure itself and not the user, so you'll be using the one i wrote there), but others are a bit more personal. the most important thing is to correctly fill the post selector with whatever selector you're using for your posts. if you're unsure about what you should use as the selector for your theme's posts, look for {block:Posts} in your theme. this block is specific to Tumblr; anything written inside it will appear for each post displayed in your blog. there is where theme makers write all the mark-up for a post, taking into consideration if it's a text, photo, video, etc. it is very likely that one of the first things you'll find inside {block:Posts} is the wrapper used for posts, since a wrapper is something you'd want to exist every time a post is displayed. for example, it might be a <div class="post">, so your selector will be ".posts"(the dot before the name refers to a class), or it might be an <article>, in which case "article" alone will do.
since you mentioned you're using PXU photosets, i'm assuming you mean to keep using PXU for the old photosets and only use npfPhotosets() for the new photosets, and this is easier for general users unfamiliar to HTML. in this case, do not worry about HTML structure whatsoever, since these plugins do not crash into each other or anything; at this point, you're done!
what follows is perhaps of more use to theme makers, so feel free to ignore. if you'd like to adapt from PXU to npfPhotosets() in regard to legacy photosets(since PXU only works with the old format), the answer is: change the classes in the PXU HTML structure to match the ones you're using for npfPhotosets(); if for example you use the exact same classes as the ones i've used, this means the image tag itself will be npf_image, its container will be tmblr_full, and the photoset container will be npf_photoset. since the rows haven't been generated yet(and this is for the script to do), you shouldn't worry about npf_row. you may notice that the PXU structure adds a link tag around your image, as a trigger for the lightbox function; this is, however, unnecessary for using the lightbox function in npfPhotosets(). i do realize now that i never pointed out how you need to include several attributes alongside the image URL to your <img> tag in order to make the lightbox function work; these are data-orig-width, data-orig-height, and data-highres, which should be assigned values regarding the photo's original values through Tumblr's variables(as available in the photo section of the documentation) which are respectively {PhotoWidth-HighRes}, {PhotoHeight-HighRes} and {PhotoURL-HighRes}.
hope this was of any help! if you had trouble either way, do tell! i don't mind helping find the post selector if it's too troublesome.
#plugin question: npf photosets#do not be scared by text length as usual i just write more than i should

PRONOUN MASTERPOST
This was a request from Jollysunflora so I’ll go through the pronouns in each language in each language from simplest to most complex *cough* Fire-ese *cough*
Earth-ese In Earth-ese the pronouns are fairly simple. They don’t change for case and are more or less consistent throughout the whole Earth Kingdom. It’s no wonder United Republic-ans chose these over the Fire-ese pronouns.
Jei – 1st-person pronoun: ‘me’, ‘I’
Su – 2nd-person pronoun: ‘you’
Nope – 3rd-person pronoun (pronounced either 1 syllable or 2 syllables depending on the accent). This refers to a human whose gender is either unspecified, unsure, or neither male or female.
Lu – 3rd-person pronoun, used for a female human: ‘she’, ‘her’
Man – 3rd-person pronoun, used for a male human: ‘he’, ‘him’
Ca – 3rd-person pronoun, used for non-humans like: ‘it’
Now, I have left out ‘we’ and ‘they’ here because this is where Earth-ese differs from English a bit, but it’s still fairly simple.
The word-order of Earth-ese actually allows you to put as many pronouns next to each other as you need. So, instead of ‘we’ you either say ‘me and you’ (jei su) or ‘me and you and her’ (jei su lu) or however pronouns describe what you’re referring to.
‘They’ as in a large group of varied people can be ‘Nope lu man’ or ‘man lu’ but in the Southern dialect it is also common to just add the plural suffix ‘-chong’, such as ‘Nopechong’.
For ‘you’ when referring to a large group, Northern Earth-ese speaker would say ‘Su su’ as in ‘you and you’ but in Southern Earth-ese it is more common to say ‘Suchong’.
There are no formal versions of these pronouns as formality and politeness are often added at the start of the sentence with context words in a similar way to ‘please’. Although, in some Southern dialects they suffix these context words onto the pronouns, similar to the plural marker.
UR Fire-ese I actually lied. UR Fire-ese probably has the easiest pronouns but since they’re derived from the Earth-ese pronouns I thought it was easier to explain those first.
Anyway, UR Fire-ese took ‘Jei’, ‘Su’, ‘Nope’, ‘Lu’, ‘Man’, and ‘Ca’ from Earth-ese but simplified the plural pronouns using the Fire-ese plural suffix ‘-ghan’ (Pronounced ‘-gan’ in the UR). Fire-ese also has a dual suffix (-zu) but since Earth-ese does not it is only used emphatically in UR Fire-ese.
Jeigan – ‘we’, ‘us’
No-pe-gan – ‘they’, ‘them’ (human)
Cagan – ‘they’, ‘them’ (non-human)
While the ‘-ghan’ suffix can be used on any of the other pronouns, these two were the most commonly accepted in general speech. ‘Sugan’ or ‘Suzu’ or ‘Lugan’ are all understood but only really used when you want to be specific, like specifically saying ‘You all’ or ‘the pair of women’.
However, UR Fire-ese is still Fire-ese and the closer you speak to Mainland Fire-ese the ‘posher’ you are perceived. These pronouns are still vastly preferred but a few very posh/formal speakers add Fire-ese pronouns, usually derived from a person’s title, almost like an honorific.
For example, the Council Page Tarrlok sent to convince Korra to join the taskforce. He would say something along the lines of: “Councilman Tarrlok sends his compliments and urges the Avatar to reconsider his offer.” Despite being a Fire-ese addition, this is often combined with the Earth-ese articles like ‘the’.
Most people make fun of this practice as it sounds like you’re speaking in third person.
Air-ese
Air-ese don’t conjugate for number, gender, or formality so in effect they only have 3 pronouns:
Fa – 1st-person: ‘me’, ‘I’, we’, ‘us’
Ka – 2nd-peron: ‘you’
Ta – 3rd-person: ‘she’, ‘her’, ‘he’, ‘him’, ‘it’, ‘they’
But everything in Air-ese has to conjugate for case to be understood so these are either used as the ‘f-‘, ‘k-‘, and ‘t-‘ prefixes or the ‘-fa’, ‘-ka’, and ‘-ta’ suffixes.
In a noun phrase, you would add ‘(l)ang’ to them: fang/langfa, kang/langka, tang/langta
If the pronoun refers to the subject of a transitive verb (she kicked him), you add a ‘(h)ik’: fik/hikfa, kik/hikka, tik/hikta
Object of a transitive verb (she kicked him), you add a ‘(t)ag’: fag/tagfa, kag/tagka, tag/tagta
Agent of an intransitive verb (she sleeps), you add a ‘(l)in’: fin/linfa, kin/linka, tin/linta
There are other cases which I’ll list in a later post so with Air-ese it is easiest to learn the individual parts and construct them as you go.
Water-ese
Okay, looking at things now I am starting to see a pattern. Why do I hate ‘we’ and ‘them’ so much? Not a single one of my conlangs ended up having a single word for them.
Oh well. Anyway, Northern Water-ese has 10 pronouns, each of which have a plural form, and each of which have a separate form for the subject of the verb and the object of the verb. That equates to…60 forms total. Thank goodness they’re regular! Once again, you just have to learn the basic building blocks and smash them together.
Inside a verb as an indirect object or something similar, they appear as either the onset or the coda listed in the second column e.g. “Nisok kaguroonga giq!” The verb here is broken down into: [enjoy-hope-3rd.immaterial-present] -> [ka-guroon-g-a] which the ‘-g-’ referring to the immaterial blog which will make happy.
In Water-ese, instead of a formal/informal distinction like French there is a familiar/unfamiliar distinction. The 2nd-person changes depending on how well you know the person, whether they are a stranger or not. Although, there is a formal 2nd-person used for people with a high status.
The 3rd-person pronouns are split into ‘animate’ pronouns and ‘inanimate’ pronouns. You separate humans and animals into either ‘male’ or ‘female’ while spirits have their own 3rd-person pronoun. Everything else is either ‘solid’ – something with a solid form – ‘flowing’ – something physical but changing – or ‘immaterial’ – something without a physical form. These are often compared to the forms of water: ice, water, and steam.
All of these pronouns are used in the Northern Water Tribe but during the separation caused by the 100 Years War the Southern Water Tribe got rid of the animate 3rd-person pronouns and the 2nd-person formal pronoun. This means that in the Southern Water Tribe all humans and animals are described with the ‘solid’ 3rd-person pronoun. Also, in the Northern Water Tribe they refer to the Avatar using the ‘spirit’ 3rd-person pronoun. In the Southern Water Tribe it’s the same ‘solid’ pronoun as other humans.
There are also pronunciation differences between the Northern Water Tribe and the Southern Water Tribe.
NWT: [Rra -> Ra] [Ves -> Fes] [Kack -> Kak]
SWT: [Min -> Moon] [Ves -> Ve] [Yuk -> Yook] [Miq -> Mik]
So ‘Viq’ would be pronounced ‘Fiq’ in the Northern Water Tribe and ‘Vik’ in the Southern Water Tribe.
Fire-ese
Alright, here is the mother of complicated when it comes to pronouns and probably what most of you wanted this post to be about.
There are no regular pronouns in Mainland Fire-ese. Basically, you are constantly speaking in 3rd-person, using things’ names, descriptions, and positions to get across what you are referring to. You can just use people’s names – “Looks like Zuko underestimated the Avatar” – and this is used by children who find remembering pronouns to be difficult but as a result this is often seen as childish or slow-witted.
In an extremely neutral situation, you can use ‘Yudafaw’ or ‘Yukinghan’ to indict yourself who is speaking and the person you are talking to. However, people tend to like to personalise their speech with either their official title, like Fire Lord, or a defining characteristic such as their age, hair, or personality. It is very common to turn adjectives into pronouns like ‘Brown (hair)’, ‘Chatty’, or ‘Blue (clothes)’. These pronouns don’t usually have a specific gender attached to them unless it’s something like ‘mother’, as in the parent who was pregnant, although even this isn’t necessarily female.
These pronouns indicate closeness and formality. For example, most people would refer to the Avatar as ‘Avatar’ (technically ‘Avator’ in the Mainland Fire-ese accent) but once Zuko joins the Gaang and becomes friends with Aang he would instead use ‘Friend’ or just ‘Aang’ in casual conversation.
There is also a good set of demonstratives to refer to inanimate objects:
Uza – Something close to the speaker: ‘this’
Shur – Something close to the listener: ‘this’
(Thing) Lei – Something close to (something): ‘this’
Lian – Something away from the speaker: ‘that’
Mir – Something away from the listener: ‘that’
(Thing) Ehnoz – Something away from (something): ‘that’
‘-zu’ or ‘-ghan’ can be added to any of these to indicate number.

H1 Headings For SEO - Why They Matter
New Post has been published on https://tiptopreview.com/h1-headings-for-seo-why-they-matter/
H1 Headings For SEO - Why They Matter
The use of headings for ranking better on search engines has a long history. It’s one of the earliest known Google ranking factors. Because search engines algorithms evolve, it’s important to understand how why headings remain important and how to use them for modern search engines.
This article links to research papers, patents and statements from Google that shows the best way to use the H1 element for SEO ranking purposes.
Original Google Algorithm and Headings
The original Google algorithm was described in the 1998 “Anatomy of a Search Engine” research paper. That document provided the foundation of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) practices appropriate for modern search engines.
Screenshot of the Anatomy of a Search Engine Paper
The document was widely read by search marketers in the early days and some of the insights remain with us today.

In it is found statements that make it clear that specific kinds of on-page elements were in fact ranking factors.
For example, it states that the title element (title tag) was an important ranking factor. This document from 1998 can be considered responsible for the SEO practice of adding keywords to specific web page elements (headings, title, etc.) for ranking purposes.
Here is an example of how the title tag and the PageRank score was enough to accurately rank a web page:
“For most popular subjects, a simple text matching search that is restricted to web page titles performs admirably when PageRank prioritizes the results.”
Other ranking signals are word position within a document (keywords near the top of the page were more important), font size used, and even capitalization.
The paper describes algorithmically “weighting” the fonts.
That means assigning ranking signal importance to them. When something has more weight, that means it has more importance as a ranking factor.
The founders of Google explained how keyword “hits” (matching query keywords to on-page keywords) were influenced by Weighting and then tallied up as a score.

(IR means Information Retrieval and the IR Score is a measurement of how relevant a page is to a search query.)
This is how the original version of Google’s ranking process is described:
“Google considers each hit to be one of several different types (title, anchor, URL, plain text large font, plain text small font, …), each of which has its own type-weight.
…Google counts the number of hits of each type… Then every count is converted into a count-weight.
Count-weights increase linearly with counts at first but quickly taper off so that more than a certain count will not help. We take the dot product of the vector of count-weights with the vector of type-weights to compute an IR score for the document.
Finally, the IR score is combined with PageRank to give a final rank to the document.”
As you can see, on-page factors were very important, including the size of the fonts. The size of the fonts is a reference to the HTML sizing of the fonts, which is a reference to the headings used and possibly the font size attribute.
By 2003, using the font size HTML attribute was not considered a ranking factor. In terms of ranking factors related to font size, only the heading element (H1, H2, etc.) was considered a ranking factor.
Google Patents Related to Headings
Bill Slawski (@bill_slawski) of GoFishDigital (@gofishdigital), is commonly acknowledged as the leading expert on search engine patents. So I asked him about patents related to heading elements.
Bill responded with two interesting patents.
Screenshot of Bill Slawski speaking with Search Engine Journal
Bill Slawski speaking with Search Engine Journal
The first patent was filed in 2004, which he describes in the article, Google Defines Semantic Closeness as a Ranking Signal

The article explains what the algorithm is trying to do:
“One part of the process behind this approach involves a search engine analyzing the HTML structures on a page, looking for elements such as titles and headings on a page…
In other words, the search engine is attempting to locate and understand visual structures on a page that might be semantically meaningful, such as a list of items associated with a heading.”
Bill explains how the algorithm is figuring out semantic relatedness:
“The patent gives us the following rules about headings and list items when it comes to the distance between words appearing within them:
If both terms appear in the same list item, the terms are considered close to one another;
If one term appears in a list item and the other term appears in the header, this pair of terms may be considered to be approximately equally distant to another pair of terms that appear in the header and another of the list items;
Pairs of terms appearing in different list items may be considered to be farther apart than the pairs of terms falling under 1 and 2.”

Headings and Featured Snippets
Another more recent patent involves the importance of headings in the selection of featured snippets. The algorithm uses the headings on a page as part of the process of selecting passages to be used in a featured snippet.
Bill related that this is what the algorithm is about:
“This answer passages patent uses a page title and main headings to adjust scores for answer passages, by giving them context.”
The article is titled, Adjusting Featured Snippet Answers by Context.
Bill’s article uses the words “heading or headings” 127 times, which shows just how important headings are to this patent.
The article quotes this from the patent, which shows just how important headings were for this patent:
“Receiving a query that is a question query seeking an answer response
Receiving candidate answer passages, each passage made of text selected from a text section subordinate to a heading on a resource, with a corresponding answer score
Determining a hierarchy of headings on a page, with two or more heading levels hierarchically arranged in parent-child relationships, where each heading level has one or more headings, a subheading of a respective heading is a child heading in a parent-child relationship and the respective heading is a parent heading in that relationship, and the heading hierarchy includes a root level corresponding to a root heading (for each candidate answer passage)
Determining a heading vector describing a path in the hierarchy of headings from the root heading to the respective heading to which the candidate answer passage is subordinate, determining a context score based, at least in part, on the heading vector, adjusting the answer score of the candidate answer passage at least in part by the context score to form an adjusted answer score.”

What Google Says About H1 and Headings in General
Google’s John Mueller has fielded many questions about headings. The reason why there’s so much interest is because headings continue to be perceived by the SEO community as having more weighting, a higher level of influence as a ranking factor.
Algorithms Evolve
While the heading element may have had a stronger weight as a ranking factor in the past, that influence may have evolved.
Bill Slawski’s example about how headings might be used in the process of selecting featured snippets is an example on how the influence of heading elements has evolved.
In the featured snippets patent, the heading elements are used for understanding context. They are not used to give more ranking power to a passage of content.
In other words, instead of influencing a ranking score, the headings are being used to influence how an algorithm understands what a passage of content is about.
Statements by Google’s John Mueller on H1 Headings
That patent aligns with the most recent statements that Google’s John Mueller has made about H1 headings and headings in general.

Screenshot of John Mueller Explaining How Google Uses H1 Headings for Search
John Mueller Discusses How to Use Headings
Search Engine Journal published an article titled, John Mueller on How to Use Headings. The article notes Mueller’s answer on how to use headings for SEO.
John confirmed that Google still uses headings for search. He said that Google uses them to understand content.
“We do use headings when it comes to search. But we use them to better understand the content on the pages.”

H1 Headings and Order of Headings
In what may be shocking to some in the SEO industry, Mueller asserted that the order of the headings doesn’t matter to Google.
According to Mueller, the importance of the heading elements is to communicate what the following text passage or image is about.
How Mueller explained heading elements:
“So… this question of… how should I order my H1, H2, H3, headings and what should the content be, that’s something from my point of view isn’t really that relevant.
But rather, what we use these headings for is well we have this big chunk of text or we have this big image and there’s a heading above that, therefore maybe this heading applies to this chunk of text or to this image.
So it’s not so much like there are five keywords in these headings, therefore this page will rank for these keywords but more, here’s some more information about that piece of text or about that image on that page.
And that helps us to better understand how to… frame that piece of text, how to frame the images that you have within those blocks. And with that it’s a lot easier to find… the right queries that lead us to these pages.
So it’s not so much that suddenly your page ranks higher because you have those keywords there.
But suddenly it’s more well, Google understands my content a little bit better and therefore it can send users who are explicitly looking for my content a little bit more towards my page.”

Google and Using Multiple H1 Elements
John Mueller has discussed the use of multiple H1 elements. In the past it was understood that the H1 element sent a more powerful signal than an H2 element.
Some in the SEO industry may reason that if the H1 element is stronger than an H2, H3 element, that using H1 elements through a web page may send a stronger keyword signal. But that is incorrect, that’s not how ranking works.
As we can see from Mueller’s comment above and even in the Google patent that Bill Slawski wrote about, that is no longer be the case.
John Mueller recently dispelled all doubts about this point when he debunked the strategy of using multiple H1 elements for ranking purposes.
This point about using multiple H1 elements was documented in an article titled, John Mueller on Multiple Use of H1 Headings.
Mueller explained:
“You can use H1 tags as often as you want on a page. There’s no limit, neither upper or lower bound.
Your site is going to rank perfectly fine with no H1 tags or with five H1 tags.”

Heading Elements Give Structure to a Page
Mueller next reiterated the importance of heading elements as a way to give structure to a web page.
“H1 elements are a great way to give more structure to a page so that users and search engines can understand which parts of a page are kind of under different headings.
So I would use them in the proper way on a page. And especially with HTML5 having multiple H1 elements on a page is completely normal and kind of expected.
Some SEO tools flag this as an issue and say like Oh you don’t have any H1 tag or you have two H1 tags… from our point of view that’s not a critical issue.”
Heading Tags Continue to be Important
In the answer documented above, Mueller said that a web page can rank without the use of headings. This is true.
But that does not diminish the importance of the use of headings in a web page. Headings continue to be a useful way to make it clear what a web page is about.
The importance of heading tags was documented in the article titled, Heading Tags are a Strong Signal
Google’s Mueller explained why headings are important:
“So, headings on a page help us to better understand the content on the page.
Headings on the page are not the only ranking factor that we have.
We look at the content on its own as well.
But sometimes having a clear heading on a page gives us a little bit more information on what that section is about.”
Headings For Image SEO
Mueller also discussed how the textual context of headings helps Google to understand what images are about.
“So in particular when it comes to images, that’s something where headings and the context of that image helps us a lot to understand where we should be showing that image in search.
…images are not text. We don’t automatically know what we should be showing it for.
And that combination of the image plus the landing page is something that depends quite a bit on the text of the page.”
Headings are a Strong Signal
Mueller next reaffirmed that headings are a strong signal.
“And when it comes to text on a page, a heading is a really strong signal telling us this part of the page is about this topic.
…whether you put that into an H1 tag or an H2 tag or H5 or whatever, that doesn’t matter so much.
But rather kind of this general signal that you give us that says… this part of the page is about this topic. And this other part of the page is maybe about a different topic.”
Headings Communicate Semantic Meaning
The original Google algorithm research paper from 1998 demonstrates without question that text reproduced in larger fonts were interpreted as being important for ranking purposes. More recently, patents that mention heading elements discuss them as a way for understanding context and not so much for generating a ranking score.
A further indication of the evolution of how headings are used come from statements by Google’s John Mueller that indicate that the way heading tags are used may have indeed changed since 1998.
Heading tags continue to be important. But because Google’s algorithm has changed in the past twenty two years, it may be useful to pay close attention to what Google’s patents and Googlers have to say about headings and update one’s search strategy accordingly.

Retro Food: Gelatin and Aspic
Okay, so I’ve briefly gone over some of the basics of why 40s/50s food is the way it is. Very, very briefly. I’ll try to get more into things as we go.
I’m going to start getting into food now.
Now, I’m just going to give a brief warning, judging by people’s reactions to aspic, some of the pictures might gross you out. I’ll try to tag these posts as ‘retro food’ and ‘gross food’, though and... well, we’ll get into the nature of aspic in a moment.
I’m going to refer to gelatin as ‘jell-o’ or ‘jello’ a lot, because that’s the brand that was really exploding at the time, but we need to have a quick look at what gelatin is.
Gelatin is an animal byproduct that comes from the proteins of animal bones, skin, and connecting tissue. By boiling the hell out of those things, you separate the elastic proteins from them. Why am I mentioning this? Mainly because aspic tends to be seen as the weird outlier of ‘meat jello’ while ‘sweet jello’ is seen as the norm. The truth is, aspic came first in cooking and adding sugar and fruit flavour is newer. And while aspic has mostly gone extinct as a cooking choice in America, other places in the world still serve it (like Russia with it’s holodets).
Shown here: Holodets garnished with a shutterstock logo
That out of the way, let’s talk about the history of jello, because it spans back farther than just the 40s.
You know how you can buy Jello packets for like 50 cents at your local supermarket? Well, back in the day, the Victorian day, gelatin was considered a luxury item reserved for royalty and the very wealthy. That’s because gelatin was sold in sheets, and the preparation of gelatin was super difficult (they didn’t have fridges, so... y’know. Lil hard to get it to set). With time and the miracles of technology, gelatin became more available to the common man. The common man who recently became able to afford fridges.
Shown Here: Pork cutlets in aspic. Amazing. I can’t decide what to comment on, the amazing prospect of eating perfectly dome shaped food or that it looks like catfood suspended in a paperweight.
There’s two big things about gelatin. The first being it still had that lingering aura of being a luxury item. It was cheaper at this point, but being able to make it also meant that you had a fridge. It also meant you were able to afford expensive gelatin molds. Because yeah, those weren’t cheap either.
The secondary thing is, thanks to the war, people were huge on making food last as long possible. And gelatin was actually really good at that- anything you put into jello became encased in a protective jello shield. And since it takes quite awhile for gelatin to ‘go bad’, it helped preserve foods from bacteria for longer than they otherwise would have lasted. So you could nosh on your jello atrocity for longer than you would have otherwise. Yaay.
So those two things in mind, gelatin became pretty damn popular. Aspic has always been around, but it became easier to make, so you see aspic dishes as commonly as jello dishes. Knox and Jell-o were two big names in gelatin at the time, and are still around today.
What’s not around today, however, is some of the savory flavours of Jell-o.
So, naturally, you put a fish in it.
Vegetable, celery, tomato, and ‘italian’ flavored jellos are a thing that once existed but no longer do. Sadly, recipes that called for these gelatins can no longer be made. It also means that when you see green jello being used in a dish, it’s not necessarily lime! It could be vegetable or celery flavoured instead, which might make the flavour profile slightly less horrifying. It could also, in fact, actually be lime anyway.
It’s lime! Why.
Learning about retro gelatin food also drove me to learn what the exact definition of ‘salad’ was, because boy, none of this stuff looked like salad to me. Turns out salad basically means ‘mix of cold stuff’. Soooo... okay. Sure. It’s salad and everything I thought I knew in my life is a lie, but okay.
That’s all for this section, enjoy this collection of pictures of gelatin foods.
Memorable.
The famous ‘perfection salad’!
Look there’s a recipe so you can make this at home.
... why is it always lime?

Get Strong and Sculpted Inner Thighs in Just 10 Minutes a Day
Expert Contributor for this article: Brian Klepacki (MS, CSCS, FMS), also the creator of bestselling thigh toning program ‘The Inner Thigh Solution‘
Welcome to the MOST comprehensive and educational video on YouTube (play the video above) about your Inner Thigh muscles aka adductors . The adductors are a fairly large muscle group on the inside of your thigh/groin area. This area has TWO primary functions and there are TWO methods to train it properly. Strength Coach Brian Klepacki, MS, CSCS, also the creator of Inner Thigh Solution shares some serious knowledge about this very important part of your legs and the many exercises you should be doing in your training to develop and UNLOCK those adductors. Get ready to take some notes as Brian takes a look at your Inner Thighs from A to Z. (Watch video above)
It is true without a toned inner thigh you would never manage to pull of that sexy swim suit you had been dreaming to wear for so long. Inner thigh fat grows the same way you accumulate fat in other parts of your body, but thighs require a bit more effort to get toned.
Sometimes, your upper portion of the body might not be fatty or bulky, but it is found that women tend to grow a heavy lower body. It is quite natural, that women have the tendency to grow bigger butts and heavy thighs, you are not alone there.
Follow Up Resource → How to avoid the #1 training mistake EVERY woman makes who wants strong, sculpted thighs.
What are Adductors and Why train them?
‘adductor muscles (commonly referred to as the inner thigh muscles)’
Believe it or not, your inner thighs actually have a purpose. One of the biggest impact your inner thighs have on your body is how it interacts with your glutes, especially the upper butt muscle -‘the gluteus medius‘. When the adductors are healthy, it’s easier for your glutes to do what they’re designed to do. When there’s an imbalance or when something is lacking, signals are sent to the brain to lock the adductors, preventing the muscles from firing. This forces them to go into protection mode restricting the gluteal complex from functioning properly. The result? Limited performance, movement issues and diminished energy. When you strengthen your inner thighs, not only will you experience incredible results within the adductors but your glutes will also be able to fully develop to look and feel their best.

Top medical professionals and movement specialists suggests that the adductor muscles (commonly referred to as the inner thigh muscles) work together harmoniously with your hip flexors to provide side-to-side stabilization of the pelvis. In a perfect world, the pelvis will remain balanced as we age but that’s generally not the case because of excessive sitting, injuries, environmental conditions, poor posture, and so on. So what ends up happening is that the body begins to shift and fall out of alignment to the point where internal systems and daily patterns become imbalanced and restricted.
Having weak and tight adductors on one side will make it difficult to hold the pelvis level which means the opposite hip will drop down as you walk. This can then result in imbalances in the hips and glutes which can lead to hip pain and excessive hip tightness.
Not only that but imbalances all over the body will eventually appear as the body tries to compensate for the tight and weak muscles. It is important to both strengthen and stretch the adductor muscles so that they are strong enough to balance the weight of the body and support the pelvis keeping your hips healthy and happy.

How to Generate More Traffic with Google’s New Features
email marketing a/b testing
You’re probably already familiar with Google My Business.
If you aren’t, as a quick recap, Google My Business is a simple way to claim your office address or storefront on Google.
That way, when someone searches for your business, you’ll show up on the right side of a Google search like the image above.
Or better yet, when someone searches for a product or service you’ll offer, you’ll show up in the local pack.
What’s interesting, though, is Google has been making changes to it, which means it just got easier to generate leads and sales for you.
Best of all, very few marketers are even leveraging these features.
Welcome Offers
What’s one of the easiest ways to generate more sales?
By offering discounts and coupons, right? Just think of it this way, if it didn’t work, Cyber Monday wouldn’t bring in $7.8 billion in sales.
Google knows that people are looking for ways to save money and find good deals. With this new feature, businesses can reward their customers by giving them welcome offers.
By following your business, they can get first-time deals and always keep in touch to see when new deals are posted.
Not only will this bring you new customers but also repeat customers because people will be notified every time you have new deals.
To set up a welcome offer, open your Google My Business app and tap on your profile. Under “Turn followers into customers,” click on ‘Create Welcome Offer’ and hit ‘Create.’
You can enter the following information in your offer:
Title (30% off oil changes)
Description
Coupon Code (Optional)
Terms and Conditions (Optional)
Website (Optional)
Once finished, you can preview your message and publish. For notifications on new followers, and editing or deleting offers, you can read more on Google Support.
Generate leads in just a few clicks
Google is now adding a “Request a Quote” button in your business listing which was discovered by Joy Hawkins and can also be seen on mobile when searching branded terms.
This is happening with businesses that have the Google My Business messaging feature on.
To enable messaging, open the Google My Business app and go to your listing.
Navigate to Customers -> Messages and turn on!
People will now be able to ask for quotes on cars, insurance, and pretty much any service out there.
You can even review these quotes and reply to them within the Google My Business App and connect with your customers easily for a quick sale.
Make sure you claim your URL
Businesses can now claim a Short Name and URL for their listing.
If you haven’t claimed your URL, make sure you do so before it gets taken by someone else.
Don’t get too crazy though as you can only change your short name three times per year. You can enable this by navigating to your locations page, click “Info” on the left-hand side, and see “add short name”.
You may not think this is a big deal, but if you have used Google My Business before, then you know it’s not easy to share your profile on business cards, emails, and text messages without posting a huge URL.
With short names, your landing page will show as g.page/businessname and can be easily shared.
A business can choose a name between 5 and 32 characters and it can contain the business name, location, and more. People can still flag a name for impersonating another business or if the name is offensive, fake, spammy, or contains inappropriate terms.
So, remember not to violate any policies with your name.
I recommend doing this as it will make it easier for your customers to refer back to your profile where they can read updates, post, make reservations, read/write reviews, and more!
And eventually, people will be able to search short names in Google Maps to find the businesses they love.
Google Assistant
Google is now letting customers order food from restaurants and stores via Google Assistant, which is delivered through DoorDash, Postmates, Delivery.com, Slice, ChowNow, and Zuppler, with other partners possibly coming soon.
Users can click on Order Now on the listing and can choose pick-up or delivery and if they want to order ASAP or schedule for later. Payment happens through the default payment on Google Pay. If they do not have one, they will be able to add credit card information through this too.
Additionally, customers can order food by using Google Assistant by saying “Okay Google, order food from [restaurant].” If the user has ordered before, it will let them see past orders.
Updating your menu online, as well as delivery service carriers and their apps will help get you started on this.
You’ll want to make sure your menus are consistent through all your service carriers to get the best orders to your hungry customers.
And of course, I know there is a good chance you don’t have a restaurant or aren’t in the food delivery business, but expect to see more ways Google My Business gets integrated with Google Assistant.
It’s better to be early than late.
And speaking of food, Google has also added the popular dish tab on your menu which features images and menu items that people love the most.
This scans reviews and images on your Google My Business profile to find the most commonly mentioned dish and adds it to your popular dish tab. Of course, if anything is wrong, you can suggest edits to these.
This helps if there are dishes without names, wrong names, or typos can be fixed.
Auto-generated posts based on reviews
Look, you are busy, but you have no choice but to create content.
Google has given you easier ways to generate posts… in essence, they are now creating auto-generated posts for you.
These recommended posts are suggested through customer reviews on your Google My Business profile and are similar to their Small Thanks program, which tried to get you to highlight reviews given by previous customers on social media and even being able to print it out and display it on your business walls.
You are probably wondering why should you use it, right?
This helps keep people engaged in your profile if you haven’t posted on Google My Business in a while and gives you fast and easy publishing. It even gives you options to customize backgrounds with images and colors.
This will pop up on your Google My Business dashboard and all you have to do is hit “Create this post”.
There’s no real way to pick other reviews for Suggested Posts, but you are always welcome to create your own. This is just a simple feature created to help engage your audience more.
Boost your conversions by controlling your images
Businesses can now set a preferred profile cover photo in your image carousel and have a place for logos at the top-right of your profile next to the business name.
This is an additional feature to the regular NAP (Name, Address, Phone Number) as well as business hours and will be prominently featured.
You can easily create offline material
Google is launching a website where businesses can order and get custom promotional items such as stickers and posters to advertise their business. This is in hopes that it will entice customers to follow places on your profile, add reviews, and create bookings.
You can even order signs like ‘follow us on Google’ and more for free (one shipment per location).
For posters, you can use the editor to create your own type of poster that can be downloaded and easily printed by yourself or a local printing company. If posters aren’t your cup of tea, you can even share these on social media.
This is currently free as it is a downloadable offer, but you may want to pay to have someone print this out in poster size or as stickers to put on your business windows.
Just think of it this way, people put Yelp signage everywhere because it works. Chances are, it will work on Google as well.
Place Topics
Google launched Place Topics which uses data based on reviews to help give information on what previous customers think about your business.
This can help users see themes of reviews at a glance for businesses and it’s all automated.
It’s kind of like a tag cloud.
This does mean that you cannot generate these yourselves or edit them. So, if you don’t have one, you may not have enough reviews.
Also, if you have a negative one, there’s potentially no way of removing this unless you get the review removed. So, make sure your happy customers are leaving reviews is very important.
Possibly entice them with a 10% discount the next time they come… assuming you aren’t breaking any policy guidelines.
Q&A Auto-Suggest Answers
This feature that Google updated uses previous answers to questions and Google My Business Reviews to answer new questions on the spot. As you start writing the question, different answers start to pop up to give you the best match.
So how can you make sure people get the most accurate answer?
Similar to place topics, encouraging your customers to leave detailed reviews of their experience really helps. The more detailed the review is, the better the question gets answered.
Of course, people who are searching for answers can potentially see negative reviews such as prices are too high, service takes long, very long waits on weekends, and more.
In other words, always encourage positive reviews from your loyal customers.
Conclusion
If you haven’t used Google My Business before, you should check it out. With their updates and new features, it is now easier to generate sales and collect leads.
In the future, you’ll see a much deeper integration between Google My Business and Google Assistant. This is going to be important as 50% of the searches will soon by voice searches according to ComScore.
Make sure you are leveraging all of these features and releases Google is launching because it doesn’t cost you money and if you get in early enough, you’ll have an advantage over your competition.
So are you using Google My Business to it’s fullest extent?

GSvsAA - Spirit of Justice - Character Profiles
Following the AJ and DD ones, here’s the last of the second trilogy. From here, I’ll be jumping back to AAI and I’ll see how I’ll tackle it later. Perhaps it’ll be easier if I go in order of the files and work out the in-game sequence afterward. We’ll see.
Master post. I’ll update it later when I have time.
Since there’s already a thread for these names on Court-Records, I’ll be brief with the entries this time, unless I find some extra trivia to add. And while it’s atypical of me, I’ll share my speculation on the origin of some less obvious puns for the English names too.
Spoilers ahead.
Main cast
Rayfa Padma Khura’in (レイファ・パドマ・クライン) rei is “spirit”; while the reibana (霊花) is an alternate name for the higanbana (彼岸花), aka the Lycoris Radiata, an ominous red flower that grows in Buddhist Hell and is said to guide spirits into the next reincarnation. It’s frequently seen in funerals. Fyi, the higan refers to the "other side” of the Sanzu River, which is similar to the River Styx. padma means “lotus” in Sanskrit. Khura’in was taken from the Kurain we know, which in turn has been taken from the Klein Bottle. Trivia: Her Song of Ceremony is sung completely in Japanese. By that logic, we could have expected an English dub, but I guess Capcom US wasn’t interested, since they only gave us subtitles instead. A few internal game files have given her name as “Honfa”. I can only guess it’s referring to how she’s the central (hon) character to this game. Also, she’s the kind of girl who would be pretty “serious” (honki) about her roles.
Edit: Added a link to the official source of “Kurain”.
Nahyuta Sahdmadhi (ナユタ・サードマディ) Previously, we thought nayuta was the Sanskrit word, meaning “myriad” (or in some East Asian languages, “10^26 or 27), but as it turned out, it’s just the name of someone Yamazaki knew from his university. It was originally a placeholder name, but Eshiro liked it so much it came to be. His last name is based on the phrase hotoke no kao mo sando made, “Even the Buddha will get angry if you brush his face thrice,” or in other words, “Even the Buddha has limits.” It also may come from the Sanskrit word samadhi, a state of meditative consciousness. Trivia: Throughout the game are scattered references to the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, and he gives us three. Three times he gets to bind a defense attorney, referring to the three disciples of Monk Tang, the novel’s protagonist. Apollo is bound on the head; Sun Wukong is restrained by a magical crown that shrinks when a certain sutra is chanted. Athena's arms are bound; Zhu Bajie has been bound several times throughout the story due to his lewd and disrespectful tendencies. Phoenix’s favorite arm is bound. While there aren’t any particular instances of Sha Wujing’s arm being bound (that I can recall), he’s always been the most responsible of the disciples and is somewhat gullible compared to the other two. :3
Ahlbi Ur’gaid - Bokuto Tsuani (ボクト・ツアーニ) His name comes to “boku to tsua- ni”, or “on a tour with me”.
Shah’do - Mitamaru (ミタマル) mitama is “soul”; maru is a common ending to a boy’s name. He’s a “soul[ja] boy”! I’m sorry, I won’t do that again. His English name, literally “shadow”, may refer to how he’s always tagging along by Ahlbi’s side. Trivia: Shah’do is in fact the only non-human character in the entire series to play the part of the main cast in a game. He even got his own character entry, complete with quote, on the official site! Sadly, I have no idea what he actually says.
Episode 1
Pees’lubn Andistan’dhin - Potdino Nikawas (ポットディーノ・ニカワス) pottode means “coming out of nowhere” and niwaka means “suddenly”, likely referring to how he appeared in the intro out of the blue to join this country’s religious practitioners. din in Arabic means “religion” or “way of life”. Also, DEEN, pronounced with a long e-sound, is the name of a well-known Japanese rock band. Trivia: According to a tweet from Eshiro, this guy’s name is officially “Nikawas”, but for the longest time he and some others mistook it as “Niwakas”, which made it into the final release.
Paht Rohl - Miima Waruhito (ミーマ・ワルヒト) mimawaru is “to patrol”, so his name becomes “patrolling person”. Aslo, waru can mean “bad”, so he’s also not such a good person as he seemed.
Episode 2
Bonny de Famme - Nanano Mimi (菜々野 美々) If you flip the kanji in her last name, they make yasai (野菜), meaning “vegetable”. mimi is “ears”. de Famme probably comes from “defame”, given her and her sisters’ machinations behind the scenes.
Betty de Famme - Nanano Kiki (菜々野 輝々) Kiki is named like her sister, though kikimimi means “ears poised for listening”. Also, the sound a bat makes is often romanized in Japanese as a ki sound.
Roger Retinz - Shinoyama Kanenari (志乃山 金成) It’s custom in Japanese TV production slang to switch syllables of a name or saying around, so we switch his name around. Shinoyama becomes yamashino, and Kanenari becomes narikin (金 can be pronounced kin). Thus, yamashi no narikin means “a swindling nouveau riche”.
Mr. Reus - Mr. Menyo (Mr. メンヨー) menyou (面妖) is “strange” or “suspicious”. I’ve heard speculation from other fans that Reus can be switched around to make “ruse”, as he is a masterful magician. His real name, Manov Mistree, is originally Fushigi Naohito (伏木 直人). fushigi na hito means “a mysterious person”.
Episode 3
Tahrust Inmee - Marmer Ahtam (マルメル・アータム) marumeru is “to make bald” and atama is “head”.
Beh’leeb Inmee - Sahra Ahtam (サーラ・アータム) sarasara is onom. for “silky” or “flowing”, in this case referring to her hair.
(Between these two, I can’t quite make out why they would choose these names, since they seem like very generic puns for witnesses in a case. Perhaps that’s the point?)
Puhray Zeh’lot - Ogam Mainiche (オガム・マイニーチェ) ogamu is “to worship”, and mainichi is “every day”, so it’s “pray every day”. His real name is Reehl Neh’mu, and its Japanese counterpart is Fon Myo, from honmyou, “real name”.
A’nohn Ihmus - Nanashiino Gonbe (Tent.) (ナナシーノ・ゴンビェ(仮)) Yes, the “tentative” is part of his name. nanashi no gonbee (名無しの権兵衛) is an anonymous or unidentified name, like “John Doe”.
Datz Are’bal - Datz Dinigel (ダッツ・ディニゲル) His complete name comes from datto de nigeru (脱兎で逃げる), or “fleeing as fast as I can”. Interestingly, his English name gets to keep the same first name, thus making “that’s a rebel” or “that’s horrible” (the latter probably regarding how he first looks on his wanted poster, but I’m not as sure about this one).
Lady Kee’ra - Torihime-sama (鳥姫様) It literally means “Bird Princess”, but it’s not an actual name. I was surprised to learn that she got a name in the English version. Her real name is Ihmsan, which is the same in the JP version. I’m not sure about the whole pun here, but imu is a verb meaning “to avoid, shun”, like a taboo. It’s supposedly taboo to say her name.
Edit: Okay, so it’s actually based on imu, 仏, in this case meaning, “a dead body” and the honorary suffix san. It’s referring to her killing spree. (The same kanji when pronounced hotoke is referring to the Buddha or someone with such imagery, though it applies less to her.)
Plumed Punisher - Torisaman (トリサマン) It’s an offshoot of Tonosaman, aka The Steel Samurai, but with tori for “bird”. Btw, Tonosaman comes from tono-sama, “lord”, and the word “man”.
Episode 4
Bucky Whet - Uchidate Susuru (内舘 すする) uchitate is “freshly kneaded”, while susuru is “to slurp”. His English name is from “buckwheat”, the kind of dough commonly used to make soba noodles. Interestingly, the embroidery on his lapel reads 上戸, ueto, but pronounced as jougo, it means “hard drinker”.
Taifu Toneido - Senpuutei Bakufuu (旋風亭 獏風) senpuu is “hurricane”; bakufuu is “blast”, like of wind or from an explosion. The tei (亭) is an honorary suffix that’s added to the pseudonym of a rakugo performer.
Geiru Toneido - Senpuutei Puuko (旋風亭 風子) I think Puuko was just chosen for its cuteness. The first kanji in her name is the one for “wind”, and ko is a common ending for a girl’s name.
Uendo Toneido - Senpuutei Bifuu (旋風亭 美風) bifuu, written as 微風, is “breeze”. His other personalities are named after rakugo characters. Kisegawa is the same in both versions. Her name is from the story Omitate (”The Choice”). Patches is Ippachi, and Owen is Sadakichi. Both appear in various rakugo plays and are well known stock characters; Ippachi as taikomochi (a male geisha) and Sadakichi as an apprentice. Trivia: Patches and Kisegawa speak in nonstandard dialects. I’m not quite sure which, though, so if someone could lend a hand, I’ll be happy.
Jugemu (ジュゲム) He’s named after the titular character of the rakugo play, Jegemu.
Episode 5
Dhurke Sahdmadhi (ドゥルク・サードマディ) It’s probably from Druk, the Bhutanese thunder dragon and their national symbol. There was even lightning behind him when we saw his silhouette in the anime prologue. Not to mention, Druk is also the “king” and “protector” of Bhutan; kinda like how this guy was nominal king of his country too.
Paul Atison - Kiyoki Masaharu (清木 政治) kiyoki means “proper” or “clean”; the kanji in his given name, when read as seiji, mean “politics”. It’s also this alternate pronunciation that makes it into his email. For comparison, in English, his full name is “Paul Atison Wimperson”, thus making his initials in his email “PAW”. (Coincidentally, he is kind of a “dog”, and not the kind I love. >:3c )
Archie Buff - Sanagi Fumiaki (佐奈樹 文明) sanagi is “pupa”; and the kanji in his first name, read as bunmei, mean “civilization”.
Sergeant Buff - Sergeant Sanagi (佐奈樹 軍曹) aka Armie Buff - Sanagi Philnelia (佐奈樹 ヒルネリア) Her name is probably from hirune, for “afternoon nap”. She’s a shut-in and is seen wearing her pajamas even well into the afternoon. (The colors are actually based on the Japanese air self-defense force uniform, but they look like pajamas.)
Ga’ran Sigatar Khura’in (ガラン・シガタール・クライン) garan is a Buddhist temple; namely, the “seven halls” that make up temple grounds. Her middle name may come from shi, kataru (死、語る), meaning “death speaks”.
Inga Karkhuul Khura’in (インガ・カルクール・クライン) inga means “karma” or “cause and effect”; karakuru is “to manipulate”. The rest of his name falls into the joke with Jugemu (wiki page linked above in Jugemu’s entry). (If someone could also help me break down his incredibly long full name in Japanese, that’d be great. I’m hoping it has a little more substance than “How could this name be any longer and more pompous than it already is”.)
Nayna - Baaya (バアヤ) Her name isn’t so much a name as it’s Rayfa calling her “granny”.
Amara Sigatar Khura’in (アマラ・シガタール・クライン) amala (阿摩羅) is a number, 10^23, and also a Buddhist term: Amalavijñāna, the highest level of “consciousness”. amara also means “immortal” in Sanskrit, having survived two assassination attempts. In her case, her middle name also refers to shi wo kataru (死を騙る), “faking a death”.
Jove Justice - Odoroki Sousuke (王泥喜 奏介) It’s almost the same as Apollo’s name, but the hou replaced by sou (奏), for “play music”. So, “Surprise! Here’s a music boy!” I mean, I couldn’t exactly use “play boy” since that sounds wrong...
DLC Episode
Ellen Wyatt - Outsubu Shizuku (大津部 雫) outsubu means “a large amount”, particularly of something small; shizuku is “a drop”. So, yeah, lots of tears.
Sorin Sprocket - Haguruma Raito (八久留間 来人) haguruma is a “gear”. Raito sounds like “light” as well as “Wright”, as in the Wright Brothers. (It has nothing to do with Nick or Trucy. Nick is forever earth-bound anyway.)
Pierce Nichody - Juumonji Kazuharu (十文字 一治) The kanji in his surname make up “character for ten”, which is 十, a cross. It’s likely referring to health organizations like the Red Cross. The kanji of his first name are “one” and “heal”, respectively; referring to his hard choice while he was still a surgeon.
Dumas Gloomsbury - Yonekura Seiji (米倉 静次) nekura is “gloomy”, “dark”. Perhaps his first name is from seijou (清浄), meaning “clean”; as in, he was innocent of the crash incident.
Edit: Okay, so Ash has told me that I made a wrong guess. The only other idea I can surmise is seji (世事), “ways of the world”, so that it works as nekura na seji to make “a gloomy world”.
Edit 2: And another wrong guess. Okay, I’m out of ideas. As I mentioned above, seiji as 政治 is “politics”, but the only connection I can make with him is how the Sprockets are indirectly tied into it and how he’s been made a scapegoat.
Selena Sprocket - Haguruma Hikari (八久留間 ひかり) hikari is “light”, to match her brother’s name.
Extra: Locations
Tehm’pul Temple - Ji-in Temple (ジーイン寺院) ji’in is “temple”, so the name is a repeat of the same word. Hence the English name.
Penrose Theater - Trompe Theater (トロンプ劇場) It’s from the French “trompe-l'œil“, the art technique that creates 3D optical illusions from realistic 2D images. Penrose is likely from the impossible triangle, popularized by mathematician Roger Penrose.
Take-2 TV - Nidomi TV (ニドミテレビ) nidomi (二度見) is to “look twice” or “double take”, as in surprise. How convenient that in English, “take” has another appropriate definition.
Kurukurutei (来来亭) It means “Come Come Place” (the tei actually means “pavilion” in other contexts). Incidentally, that tei is also a suffix to denote a place as a restaurant. Trivia: Ash@C-R has noted that there’s a ramen restaurant chain in Japan with the same name but different pronunciation, but it’s probably a coincidence.
Alright, with that, I clean my hands for tackling AAI in the coming several days, but I expect delays over this weekend. I’ll be heading out of town for a day.
