“You read the Prophet?” James asked Sirius quietly, despite casting a muffliato on the bathroom. Nobody quite knew how sensitive Remus’ ears were, especially so close to the moon. Sirius nodded, “Has Remus?”

Sirius chanced a look over at where Remus was reading on his bed. “Dunno. Maybe not, he doesn’t seem…”

“We can’t let him see it,” James whispered.

“I’d like to see you try and stop him from reading something. The last time I tried that I ended up on my arse at the bottom of the stairs.” Sirius glanced over at Remus again, “He’s going to find out at some point anyway.”

“I know, but,” James sighed, “It’s going to hurt him so much.”

“He has us, and the girls, and your family,” Sirius rolled his eyes as James shot him a pointed look, “Our family. He’s not alone. Whenever he does find out, we all have to rally around him.”

“Yeah, we can do that.” James shook his head. “He’s going to pretend it doesn’t bother him, isn’t he?”

“You mean like how he pretended it didn’t bother him when he had that crush on Mary.” James groaned internally. When Sirius and Mary dated for a few weeks before the summer holidays, Remus became very quiet and withdrawn. They’d never spoken about it and James didn’t have the heart to tell Sirius that he was pretty sure it wasn’t Mary that Remus had feelings for.

“Something like that.” James shook his head.

“Are you done gossiping about whoever Sirius’ girl of the week is?” Remus asked loudly. “It’s almost dinnertime. I’m fucking starving.” James and Sirius looked at each other before stepping out of the bathroom. “You alright?”

“Yeah, fine.” Sirius shrugged.

Remus narrowed his eyes at them, “You’re a shit liar. Luckily, my hunger takes precedence over my curiosity about whatever your little mothers’ meeting was about. Let’s go.”

“Moony,” James said slowly. “You read it, didn’t you?”

Remus tried to keep moving towards the door before sighing and turning around. “Yes.”

“I’m so sorry, Moons.” Remus was taken aback at how sad Sirius looked. “They’re all fucking pricks.”

“Yeah,” he huffed out a soft laugh. “Although, it doesn’t exactly change much for me, personally. It’s still fucking awful.”

“It… doesn’t?” Sirius asked.

“Well, firstly, unregistered.” He gestured at himself, “And secondly, it’s not as if I could get married in the muggle world either. I never assumed marriage would be an option for me. 8 years ago, I’d have been arrested for—”

“What are you on about?” Sirius asked. “Oh, is this another weird muggle thing that I’m too ‘Ancient-House-of-Black” to understand? James?”

“Pads.” James shook his head with a smile.

“Oh, he still doesn’t know?” Remus sighed, “Pads, it won’t affect me, because I have no plans of ever marrying a girl. I like boys. Men can’t marry other men in this country, magical or muggle.”

“Oh, well good for y— Wait! Why ever not?” Sirius looked furious. "That's outrageous!"

Remus shrugged, “Some backward homophobic bullshit reason, I’m sure.”

“Well, that’s a load of bollocks.” He frowned, feeling fire in his stomach for a reason that he couldn’t entirely place as simply fury on Remus' behalf.

“It’s fine, I’m seen as a monster no matter which world I’m in. I’m used to it at this point.” Remus turned back to the door, missing the moment where Sirius Black’s heart broke. James reached for his brother’s hand and squeezed it.

“Things will be different one day, Remus,” James said softly. “This is just temporary.”

“Yeah, maybe.”

Solomon, Nightbringer and MC: A Clash of Ideals (AKA An Addendum to my "Unreliable Narrator MC" theory)

Part 1: MC is an Unreliable Narrator | Part 2: A Clash of Ideals

So these tags got me thinking...

The main thing that was stumping me as I was writing my "suspicious MC" theory was... what exactly is Solomon's role in all this? Lesson 10-A in NB makes it clear that Solomon and Nightbringer know each other, but Solomon withheld this information from MC when MC discusses their conversation with Adam (who had been relaying things Nightbringer had said). How far is Solomon aware of the MC's ploy? And why is he withholding information from MC? How far do his goals differ from Sheep-chan's?

The Enemy of My Enemy is My...

Here are some of the things that caught my eye regarding Chapter 10-A in Nightbringer.

"I'm not trying to make an enemy out of either one of you. I just want to be free, that's all. That's part of the agreement I have with "him""

This was what Solomon told the Simeon illusion when Simeon and Diavolo were arguing over who humans should side with. At this point in the game, it was unclear who "him" is referring to, but a couple of lines later, we learn that it is unlikely to be Nightbringer. Why do I say so? Because of this:

Here we see that Nightbringer calls Solomon "difficult" and "troublesome" for not choosing his side. This implies that Solomon and Nightbringer's main goals, at first glance, are not aligned. Solomon's wish to protect his own freedom goes directly against Nightbringer's wish to see Solomon choose between the angels and the demons in that illusion.

But this begs the question, who is "our side" referring to here. Is it only between the angels and the demons? We'll get to that in a moment.

"If you'd only chosen our side, it would've made things so much easier."

Nightbringer was disappointed that Solomon didn't choose to side with him in the illusion. But that does not mean that Nightbringer and Solomon are not cooperating at all. There is at least one common goal between Solomon, Nightbringer and the MC: To have MC form pacts with the demon brothers once again. So Nightbringer and Solomon could very well be working together behind the scenes to create scenarios that allows MC to get closer to the demon brothers and forge pacts with them.

Nightbringer's sentence here can mean two things. On the surface, it seems like Nightbringer is lamenting how Solomon was making things difficult for him. But when we consider that all three parties have some common ground here, "simply have been easier" could also have meant that Solomon was taking an unnecessarily difficult path to achieve their shared goals.

Considering Solomon seems to have known Nightbringer for a long time, and is aware that Nightbringer is the one that brought MC to the past, the logical conclusion would be that he has some suspicion of Nightbringer's plans for the MC. But this is where Solomon and Nightbringer's goals would differ.

Where their paths diverge

Now let's consider how different each party's goal is. The only difference between all three of their goals is the motive behind having MC form these pacts:

MC wants to be together with the brothers in their ideal world

Nightbringer wants to bring MC to their ideal world for reasons still unknown

Solomon wants MC to regain their powers once again so that the both of them can leave the past timeline

This could explain why Solomon may not be revealing his connection to Nightbringer yet: Due to the different plans they have for the MC. Perhaps being sent to the past is not only a test of Solomon's ideals, but a test of MC's as well. This journey to the past and subsequently, MC's journey to their ideal world could be a test to find out what choice MC makes. When the time comes, would MC choose to align with Nightbringer or with Solomon?

But as I had discussed in part 1, MC seems to harbour very different motivations than Solomon, and is not as interested in making pacts with the demon brothers so they can go home.

So what if when Nightbringer had mentioned "our side" in the very beginning, it was Nightbringer's sneaky way of hinting to Solomon that "our" actually means "MC and me". Not the angels, nor the demons. What if this hint totally went under Solomon's notice?

"What if your adorable apprentice were to get caught up in this?"

Nightbringer alludes to his hint again, suggesting that if MC were to get involved in their tug-of-war, Solomon's convictions may be tested. Which makes sense. If the MC's motivations does not align with Solomon's, it could pose a problem for him, as he needs MC to help him in safeguarding humanity's best interests.

Solomon here perceives Nightbringer's statement to be a threat. What if this is Nightbringer's way of holding the MC "hostage" to keep Solomon in check? That one wrong move from him would actually hurt the MC.

But alternatively, this could also be a warning from Nightbringer: If Solomon ends up on the "wrong" side, they'll find that their own apprentice will be working together with Nightbringer to go against him.

"You think you know what it is your apprentice truly wants? That you can see inside the heart of another? That doesn't strike you as overconfident?"

Here is where we see the first clue that Solomon could actually be unaware of MC's previous deal with Nightbringer and of their intention to remain in the past with the brothers. Even when Solomon insists that he and MC want the same thing, Nightbringer brands his trust in MC as overconfidence instead. If MC and Nightbringer had some implicit agreement beforehand, it would make sense for Nightbringer to be so confident that MC would not side with Solomon in the end. After all, Nightbringer would know that all MC wants is to create their ideal world. MC is actively working towards securing their place with the demon brothers of the past. Obviously, MC wouldn't care to engage in any power struggle between the 3 realms.

So from Nightbringer's perspective, Solomon looks like the fool here, which is why he later says that Solomon "has confidence to the point of arrogance". And Nightbringer is proven correct when Solomon tries to test the MC's convictions at the Fountain of Knowledge in Lesson 11. In the end, the MC chose to swear their allegiance to the demon brothers over protecting themself.

This gives even more credence to the idea that this entire conversation is a warning from Nightbringer, to tell Solomon to stay in line or he will suffer the consequences of the eventual fallout that will occur...

Sounds great, but what does this all mean?

Unfortunately, we don't see Solomon speak with Nightbringer after this scene. And after Lesson 11, the story derails from this plot point to focus on MC regaining the brothers' trust again. So it's still unclear what Solomon and Nightbringer's motives (and the reason they're trying to test the MC) truly are. But based on the possibilities I've raised so far, I have some ideas:

1. Solomon and MC: The pawns in Nightbringer's game

Solomon, the MC and Nightbringer. All three characters have their own goals that they still keep close to their chest. So Nightbringer takes advantage of the humans' convictions to achieve his aim. It is easy to get Solomon to cooperate with Nightbringer, since we know that Nightbringer was the one who made Solomon the person he is today. Nightbringer could call upon that debt to get Solomon to cooperate with him. Double-so if Solomon feels that Nightbringer is holding MC hostage. Nightbringer is also aware of MC's desire to go to the past and meet the brothers and uses this to his advantage to get MC to make pacts with the brothers again. Neither Solomon nor the MC have to know of each other's true goal here. But Nightbringer can orchestrate things using his two beloved humans to achieve the outcome he desires. This would be a case of reluctant cooperation between all three parties, for now...

2. Solomon as the sacrificial lamb

...But when the time comes, each party will then go on to pursue their own interests.

Though Solomon knows that MC needs to form pacts with the brothers' again, he does not seem to know that MC wants to remain in the past together with the brothers, that MC may be willing to abandon their previous life to forge their own ideal world. Or he may have some idea, but is convinced that the MC will make the right decision in the end. So he'd be in for a rude shock when MC finally has the pacts, turns around and says "Actually, I'm going to use these pacts to go to my ideal world, just like Nightbringer promised me!" Then Nightbringer's warning may become a reality, depending on if Solomon deems MC's new goal as a danger to humanity.

3. The MC as the sacrificial lamb (hehe)

The MC and Nightbringer both agreed that the pacts are required so MC can go to their ideal world. But what if Nightbringer is omitting some important information here? We have to remember Michael's warning in Lesson 13: That the MC will be making an enemy of the Celestial Realm should they choose to side with Nightbringer. One has to wonder why Nightbringer is so invested in bringing the MC the "happiness they desire" after all. The MC could find a cruel betrayal waiting for them at the end of the road....

Points 1, 2 and 3 here are all connected to each other, but it's possible that only one or two of these ideas may be happening. Cuz if the finale is just some Yakuza 2 shit, where everyone just ends up betraying each other in the last 15 minutes of the game, that would be ridiculous. Then again, looking at how Lesson 38 of NB went down, that kind of thing does fit the NB team's writing appro-- wait, why do I hear an angry mob outside?

To sum up:

Solomon and Nightbringer are not the only schemers here. MC is just as sneaky and manipulative, and if they play their cards right, they can give the former two a run for their money. The possibilities of how this can play out are endless!

I don't care about the brothers' trauma, game! Whatever's going on with these three is WAY more interesting *gnaws on the bars of my cell*

Hiya 😁 Yes I could google this but I love reading your explanations on all these pink flashing posts. Also thought I'd ask this in an ask in case others don't know as well. So silly question but what exactly are shaders? I remember reading something about it ages ago when I downloaded a lighting mod, and I know about that reparseshaders cheat. But like what are they in the game? Is it the lighting? Shadows? (shade, literally?) Is it like the game's version of reshade? Come to think of it reshade goes entirely over my head too other than that it makes the game pretty... 🤔 But you don't need to explain that, my curiosity was just shaders

Very good question, because there are a lot of misconceptions in the community, I think (I include myself in this, my brother had to explain all of this to me and he is currently proofreading this answer lol). No, shaders don't just have to do with light and shadow.

Shaders are programs that run on your GPU and are responsible for rendering everything you see. There are different types of shaders, such as pixel shaders or vertex shaders and they do different things. In order to render a scene, the rendering is done via a pipeline of multiple shader programs. So, for example:

Vertex shader: This program runs once per every vertex. It receives data about the vertices that are currently being rendered in a scene. It also receives information about what to do with these vertices (e.g. your sims move around, so the vertex shader has to calculate where to put those moving vertices so everything looks okay). It is also responsible for camera rotation and movement because, fun fact, when you move your camera around, the camera isn't actually moving - the in-game world is!

Rasterization: This isn't technically a shader, but it is a step in the rendering pipeline. As you know, meshes are 3D, but your monitor is not. So the rasterizer takes the moved/transformed vertices from the vertex shader and squishes them onto a 2D plane.

Fragment shader (also called pixel shader): This shader takes the pixels/fragments from the rasterizer and colours them. So this is what deals with textures and lighting (a very primitive form of lighting though, so it only determines if a pixel is light or dark). This shader runs once per pixel.

This is very oversimplified and there are other shaders too, but this is the minimum that is required to render anything nowadays.

Now the problem with "boolprop useshaders false" is that we don't actually know what that cheat does. It would make sense if this cheat would make the game use an older way of rendering called fixed-function, which doesn't use any shaders, but we know that this isn't the case, because if you open LazyDuchess wall top fix in SimPE, you'll see that this is also a shader mod but this one still works with shaders turned off. So it looks like the cheat only turns off *some* shaders, but not all.

I have to note though that my brother isn't an expert on fixed-function rendering because that is so outdated, he's too young to have ever dealt with that, so we don't know if fixed-function rendering could somehow be combined with shaders.

/edit: Little addendum from myself, something going wrong with the vertex shaders would potentially also explain why sims always T-pose when they pink flash - because the vertex shader doesn't know what to do with the vertices.

Darry rolls his eyes and drags his feet all the way to his room. He didn’t mind saying his prayers before bed, but the mention of his brother’s did irk him a bit. He loves them dearly he swears it, but by God were they annoying today. 

First, Ponyboy kept bugging him to read with him and when he wasn't doing that he was constantly asking Darry stupid questions. Darry what's 120 times 89? Darry, can you pick me up? Darry, why’s a table called a table? Who named it that? Of course, once Pony got started Sodapop joined in on the questions too. Except his questions were more rodeo based and before Darry knew it he was being forced to take Soda to the races on Saturday. He was not at all pleased. He had plans on going to the arcade with Bev and Paul on Saturday; Bev was not going to be happy when he cancels on them.

 He’s getting distracted, he’s meant to be praying not complaining. With a sigh, he closes his eyes, gets down on his knees, intertwines his fingers, and rests his forearms on the bed. 

“Dear God, thank you for this glorious day. Please continue to bless my family and my friends because they're pretty cool too. I pray that the soc’s get nicer, because they’re really mean, Lord. What’s the deal with that?” He pauses. What else does he need to pray for? Oh right. “And, not to sound ungrateful or nothing, Jesus, but can you give me a sister or somethin’? It was, in fact, not all. He kept adding to his prayers until he was fighting yawns to even get the words out. To be fair though, if God answered his prayer, He needs to know that Darry wants a nice and kind sister. She wouldn’t be gross or weird like the other girls and she wouldn’t make a big fuss about getting dirty like they do. And she’d have to get along with the guys; he’s not too sure he could keep a sister if the guys didn’t like her.

Before he finally falls asleep, Darry decides to just write a list for God when he wakes up. That way God won’t have to strain his memory too hard.

I've worked with young people like half my life (im 30), most of that in higher ed. Lemme tell you something about young adults. About the 18/19/20 year olds who are away from home for the first time. They're being told they're adults now but have no manual for how to do any of the things, but are also being underestimated despite having a wealth of lived experience. They're constantly looking for the adultier adult for guidance/permission/support.

They are just now realizing that their childhoods weren't normal, or that their parents are humans capable of making mistakes, or that they are bitter/jealous/angry about being treated differently from their sibling(s), despite still loving and being grateful for all of them. A small but significant portion of them are experiencing symptoms of mental health disorders (looking at you, bipolar and schizophrenia) for the first time and no one who knows them is around to tell anyone that their behavior isn't usual for them. They are negotiating their identities: some of them will come out, some will experiment with new pronouns, some will join protests, some will change their names, some will go to therapy for the very first time, some of them are learning the words to their trauma for the very first time, almost all of them will make new friends and lose old ones over and over again.

They have so much emotion, imagination, pain, and resilience. It's why I love working with this population. It's why I love writing and reading YA fiction. It's why I'm petitioning for us all to give Dick a little bit of grace when we read and write about him gaining a new brother, while away from home and struggling to cobble together a new identity and making new friends and losing old ones and learning the words to his trauma for the very first time. Just a little 🤏🏾

Okay, this is a VERY stupid question that came to me because of that weird Tavros/Harry/Vrissy relationship from Homestuck 2 and I'm really embarrassed to ask it. So correct me if I'm wrong please because it's been a while since I read Homestuck, we know that John and Jade are the ectobiological children of Jake and Jane and that both pre/post scratch Jake and Jane have a family relationship with Condesce/Betty Crocker (Nanna and Grandpa Harley being raised by Condesce as adopted siblings, Jake and Jane being adopted great-great-grandchildren of Condesce via Poppop and Grandma Harley). So getting straight to the point, can I consider John, Jade and Tavros Crocker as let's say """"""incest babies"""""? (My god this sounds so awful) I know Jake and Jane are NOT biologically related, but in both pre/post scratch versions they belong to the same family (Nanna/Grandpa as siblings and Jane Crocker and Jake English as "cousins") So Jane in Homestuck 2 technically married a relative????????? It's alright. But yeah, technically through ectobiology, each of the characters, even separate groups like Beta and Alpha, have some being technically related to one another. For example Dirk & Roxy and Dave & Rose, they are all brothers and sisters in that sense, but at the same time, they are also like a father and mother to the other party (Dave would be Dirk's father as Rose would be Roxy's. Roxy would be Rose's mother and Dirk being the father). The same applies to John, Jade, Jake, and Jane. But yeah, Jane would technically be married to her relative, Jake. Even if they were raised by separate people like Dad Crocker, Poppop, and Grandma Harley, both Poppop and Grandma Harley are part of the ectobiology pool that would help create both Jake and Jane. So yes, them and Tavros Crocker would be incest babies. When you think about the creation of the Homestuck kids being made through ectobiology, they would technically be all related since they were born at the same time. Though it looks like the ghost slime imprints separate each base copy, it doesn't deny the fact that the machine goes through it to create the kids we know and love and appear simultaneously.

But that's if you wanna say they count the minute they were all born at the same time on that meteor or if it doesn't count since the DNA slime didn't technically touch each other to call it incestuous slurry. It's not like with trolls and their reproduction method, which is confirmed to be incestuous slurry themselves and they admit that incest on their planet is definitely okay. Which makes all trolls we know and love, inbred aliens. This applies to fantrolls too unless stated by their creator they they were born through other means. And since trolls live on Earth C, where they still born through incestuous slurry thanks to Mother Grub, incest for trolls and technically for humans and Carapacians, is allowed on Earth C. Because it wouldn't be fair if trolls are the only ones who get to fuck with their brother/sister/cousin. And when you think about the reproduction of humans that had been through ectobiology, as seen in Credits, Earth C would also be technically started out as incest since those babies would also need to grow up and then reproduce through natural means. And by looking at the kids, there is a chance one of them is a mix of incest in some way. Like one of them being a John/Jade baby, a Dave/Rose one, etc.

I can't expect Homestuck 2 or Homestuck Beyond Canon try to claim that the rest of humanity would use ectobiology as a means to make a baby instead of the usual method. Because then it would bring a question on why hasn't there been a hybrid human+troll kind. DNA compatibility between other species has never been brought up. But nu-fans of Homestuck don't think too deep about it and WhatPumpkin/Hussie doesn't WANT you to think deeper about it either. Even now, the motto for it is "DON'T THINK ABOUT IT". Homestuck is already confusing as fuck even with the plot holes still there.

I realize I rant about Marik problems a lot (tis the tism) but I think the ones that actually tend to genuinely anger me the most in like a "oh, you genuinely did not read the same series as me" are the ones that attempt to villainize Atem over the whole series or make it seem like he only really cared about Yugi. That is just like. Blatantly incorrect.

First of all, I realize everyone really likes s0 "ooooOOO eDgY yAmI", but early manga Yami Yugi was only terribly violent for a few chapters. After that, he pretty firmly chillaxes, especially post-Death-T and definitely post-Monster World. And we are given a... pretty good reason for why he was like that originally! I would also be a little mad if I woke with no memories after being tormented in a labyrinth full of shadow demons for so long i literally could not remember being born and my first sight was someone trying to beat the shit out of the guy who was kind enough to release me from my Gay and Stupid Maze!

Literally guys, he's like a recently adopted stray kitten. He's just lashing out because he's scared. He's not evil you idiot he's 15 and incredibly incredibly confused and freaked out. Yes he still committed murder no I don't care we've excused other people for worse (take note of how these will often be the same people that uwuify marik or yb (but marik especially -> about to have a sub-rant its related i promise.))

ps. i don't get the marik thing he may be pretty but he is not a sniffling little kitten like people write him as (especially in comparison to his Big Bad Evil Personality and dangerous-bad-boy Yami Bakura who certainly never admitted to himself considering Marik slimy and weird and a dangerous asshole in canon no sir never). The man literally tried to drown Joey and (admittedly accidentally) got his own big brother fried like a fork in a toaster engineered by Elon Musk (and, I want to mention, he didn't seem to consider Rishid a genuine brother until much later after the psychological equivalent of multiple slaps upside the head). I think people just don't know how to write mental illness and/or emotions other than Horny or Sad and morals more complex than black and white.

This is actually part of I think a larger problem in the fandom with not tending to remember the whole storyline/point of yugioh was proving that people are not naturally evil and in fact often prove to be quite noble when they get taken out of a bad situation and worked on a little. Ppl don't quite get this outside of redeeming their favorite evil pretty boy so he can date around, so they either make everyone a sad little angel thats never done anything wrong in their life or a terrible demon whose surprisingly abusive qualities are only matched by his shockingly canon-inaccurate height and muscle mass increase. This is, imo, why people tend to do That to Atem. Either they interpret him as a perfect Good King that can do no wrong or, sadly more commonly, an evil serial killer that only cares about [EXPLETIVE REMOVED]ing Yugi and then pretty much nothing else.

Also, he was like... not a bad Pharoah from the exactly (checks notes) 72 hours he got to be one before dying a horrible torturous undeath. For the good of his kingdom, I want to mention. That was something he willingly undertook for the sake of his people. As far as autocratic dictators went, he was by all accounts a pretty nice one! Didn't even torture anyone to death! In fact he was so against the idea of torturing people to death we had to Specifically keep the bit where we were actually doing that secret from him!

also section B of this take then usually comes around to trying to prove he never cared about his friends other than yugi. And if I may be so spicy in the chat tonight. This is usually ooc puzzleshipping brain rot influencing critical thinking. Yes yes I get that your yami yugi 20k yandere fanfic (with a yugi that cries all the time for some reason and apparently refuses to just Take The Damn Thing Off) is hot but brother of mine that is not what Atem was like in canon. Like. At all.

First of all, even before Memory World he showed off caring about his friends. There was the whole "deadly yo yos" incident with Joey and then there was the not one but two Anzu hostage situations that he dealt with, one of which when there was literally no benefit to him or yugi to go and rescue her! In fact it put them in Active Danger to do so! And from what I remember, that was before even Death-T! So he has very much cared about his friends from the very beginning, individual of his aspect as an extension of Yugi's survival instinct.

Also. The whole point of Yu-Gi-Oh is the whole friendship is magic stuff. That absolutely applies to Atem as well. In fact it probably applies to him more so. The guy really depends on all of his friends for his sanity in a way that not even Yugi does. He likes Joey and he likes Anzu and he likes Honda (even with as little time as he got to shine RIP spiky haired king) and he likes Ryou! In fact one of the original conflicts in Battle City was that he cared about Ryou so much he wouldn't get rid of his age old archenemy because it would have hurt Ryou! But anyways. Anyways.

It feels like part of that can be blamed on the Orichalchos arc in the anime (which was certainly. An Arc. Not good not bad but a secret 3rd thing.) where they had him get incredibly depressed and ever so slightly unstable when Yugi went away. Which makes sense for him, but then people tend to overstate it to "Atem is inconsolable when Yugi isn't there to make it all better for him" and not "Atem feels incredibly guilty for falling under the spell of a literal magically evil-inducing rock and would likely feel similar if he lost really any of his friends in a similar manner."

"But steve. how are those last two things at all related to each other" WELL. YOU SEE. It always feels like people tend to make Atem evil and hate everyone else in order to justify a fantasy scenario where "Yugi" (read: writer's self-insert) gets to come along and redeem him and he gets to be their loyal attack dog. And you know what? I'm fine with that as a fanfic scenario! Let people have fun! Is probably very hot to people who are not stickily uptight bastards like me! But it annoys me like Hell when people try to canonize that particular bit of oocness.

Atem isn't evil. The poor boy is having his own problems. He's hanging out. He's doing his best. Leave him alone. He literally is just a teenage boy that likes to play games. Let him chill. Let him chill.

Addendum to Overview and Criteria for Gothic Fiction

When I wrote this thing about gothic novels I only mentioned Friedrich Maximilian Klinger's stageplay Sturm und Drang that premiered in 1777 and lent its name to a proto-Romantic artistic era in Germany.

I completely neglected to consider the influence of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm's Kinder und Hausmärchen or "Household Tales" published on the 20th of December 1812, because I was focusing on English-language gothic literature, and Margaret Raine Hunt did not translate this collection into English until 1884. (I elected not to measure how many upperclass Englishwomen would be educated to fluency in German before a translation of the Grimm's text was published.)

The Picture of Dorian Gray is a novel by Oscar Wilde published in April 1891. He published a collection of shorter fairy tales before, The Happy Prince and Other Tales in May 1888, but like Wilde's technically-perfect-yet-passionless aesthetic poetry I personally consider them rather twee or prankish. The Picture of Dorian Gray makes a more interesting showcase of gothic fairy tale.

Literary critic and gold-trophy Worst Human Being in History of the Year 1814 Marquis Donatien Alphonse François de Sade keeps turning up in my gothic literature research like a bad penny. (I've read the Marquis's books, they're horrible, I hated them.) His literary criticism remains connected with the gothic, having first theorized in Idée sur les Romans (translated into Some Thoughts on the Novel) that the upheaval and slaughter of the French Revolution inspired authors to get some horror into their Romanticism, and also that the introduction of the Supernatural in the gothic novel posed a dilemma innate to the genre: Either it gets explained, and then the mystique is gone (I'll say this is me about Old Gods of Appalachia when the witches turned cosmic horror into calculated urban fantasy)...or it never gets explained, and then the reader remains at a loss (I'll say this is me about Picnic at Hanging Rock).

What I think the Marquis didn't consider, because The Picture of Dorian Gray was long after his time, was Wilde's creation of a marvelously original "Zaubermärchen" (magic fairytale)—the poetic justice, and the poetic logic that is exhibited in such a way that it only needs intuition rather than explanation. Dorian Gray is so sure he figured something out about his wish, so exactly, but the way the "magic" in this gothic 19th-century fairy tale truly operates makes a tidy and particular sort of sense that is magic of its own.

Just like you said, we don’t ship these two, but that interaction gave us quite some food to chew on. And ironically, the only thought I have in my head after watching this is “wow, Jack really is just a puppy”. Maybe it’s because with Jack I always get this weird desire to treat him like a pup, he is surprisingly cuddable for a guy his size. In a “gosh how pwecious you are, with your floofy tail and ears awwww who’s a good boi yes you are mister doggie sir”. And Jack’s behavior in this vignette certainly didn’t help with that at all lol

But overall it’s just cute that he has this dog (wolf) mentality of trying to find order or hierarchy in a group that he is a part on. He needs the structure of a pack, I guess it’s just more natural to him. What’s also interesting is that while he admires Ruggie and I guess has chosen him as a leader (congrats on being an alpha, Ruggie…?), he doesn’t want a boss. I think the guys nailed it when they realised that Jack is acting like a little brother who has a lot to learn from Ruggie.

Which is suuuuper ironic because while being a good older brother for his own younglings, Ruggie really doesn’t want to get all familial with the guys from NRC. He wants connections and useful friendships, but when it comes to the type of dynamic Jack asks for, Ruggie is like the one person who wouldn’t want this type of closeness. And it’s very interesting to see how he just doesn’t get Jack’s desire to help him out and protect him selflessly and gratuitously.

So yeah, they’re interesting! We also liked their interactions in the Portfest event. Jack is super stubborn with his morals and his urge to do good things to people he respects, and it’s hilarious how Ruggie can’t really fight it and is visibly uncomfortable with it because of how unusual it is to him.

They are kind of too vanilla for us because Jack is general is kind of vanilla despite his animalistic side, so it’s not a huge ship for us, but it’s still a very good one! Epel absolutely has a thing for buff men, it’s funny how pretty much all of his ships are just him + huge animalistic guy… Epel would try to act like he’s “one of the dudes”, just another buff bro in his soul, but we all know how giggly he would get if, you know. Things happened.

And the Rook hc is pretty much canon, at least in my head lol There is absolutely no way he wouldn’t get interested. What a blessing it is that Epel’s potential mates are wolves, eels and all kinds of animals~ It makes the whole experience even more beauté

This is where our burrowing ends, in the most awkward crevices of pro-bono fandom work: the oxygen-depriving hole of amateurishly translated Japanese comics. The older among you might recall the days where the only way to read your favourite unpopular manga was to rely on some random fellow on the Internet to provide it through the incomparable medium of "scanlations." That is to say, poorly scanned pages from a physical copy they somehow owned subsequently localized through the power of Grit, Determination and Google Translate. Right about now, your bones should have begun turning to dust. Before you're gone from this world, however, please consider holding on for a while longer as I share my last archived tweets on the subject of Fluffy Boy Literature. As you might have guessed, the covered works belong within the domain of fan-translated scans and, as such, they occupy a very specific, very niche place in that befuddling collective unconscious we all know as The Web. In layman terms, stuff's about the get wacky.

It is now time to enter the (forbidden) world of Klonoa's physical literary media - as scanned and translated by community hero, powerstone05. Appropriately, I will start with the much lesser known, unofficial and self-published story by Mofusuke, Dream at Night.

I shall not rag too hard on the obviously unprofessional translation work here - it was done by a fan, after all. The awkward lettering and sentence repetition give it the distinct charm of something decisively made in the early days of "Scanlationns."

Which is a surprisingly good fit to the adorably simple art style that was also drawn by a fan. I do like the sibling dynamic between Klonoa and Huepow, whereas the latter acts as an impatient older brother to the former. Grandpa reprimanding them at the end is the icing on top of this fluff cake.

There isn't much else to say: it is a short, fifteen pages long doujinshi and it's pure slice-of-life. It is all it wanted and needed to be.

As an addendum: the existence of the Namco x Capcom anthology manga, based off the Japanese-exclusive gaming crossover of the same name, has been made known to me. I've read the only Klonoa centric comic from it and it's just one dumb, obnoxiously protracted joke. I don't care for this.

I have been postponing the inevitable for far too long. This is Shippuu Tengoku Kaze no Klonoa (2002-2003) by Hiroshi Katou as questionably, yet valiantly, scanslated by powerstone05. It is the most "renowned" official literature within the Klonoa community.

Ah, of course... puns. Bad puns. Bad Japanese puns localized into English. Those puns.

This manga is a fast-paced, madcap comedy - emphasis on fast-paced. It moves at a speed of a million kilometers per hour, constantly shooting visual gags at your face on almost every panel without any proper sense of pacing and with flimsily established setups.

The translation does not help but it's clear that this lack of focus and breathing time between jokes is an intrinsic issue. Frankly, I find this brand of "Machine Gun Humour" exhausting to read. I'd much prefer my comedy to be akin to a shotgun: powerful and deliberate.

On the other hand, I enjoy the artwork. Take a look at this delightfully detailed two page spread of pure wanton destruction, capped by Klonoa's comically traumatized features.

It must be pointed out that the entire premise of this manga is Klonoa being the biggest moron who ever lived. Your mileage with it may vary.

Right! This manga is turning into a "Looney Tunes" short and I'm starting to warm up to it. Katou has a clear penchant for slapstick humour. The propeller hat made me chuckle.

I finished reading the whole thing - well, skimming would be the appropriate term. It's a tiresome little deviation that could not quite distract me from its flaws. There isn't anything worth noting as all the over-the-top, frenetically paced gags tends to blend together.

With that, I have successfully covered all the major, currently available comic book media related to Klonoa: a thoroughly mixed bag, overall.

The fan-made web series Dream Crusaders sits atop the proverbial hill even with its troublesome connection to the insipid Sol Noctis storyline. Everything else is various degrees of forgettable or insubstantial.

'Tis an unsurprising result considering how hard to follow the games are - the first two games, that is. Regardless, this was an illuminating experience in its own right from the perspective of how malleable (or not at all) this franchise can be. Thanks for reading.

As a posthumous note, there was a final piece of literature worth mentioning to you, an officially licensed short manga that served as promotional material, introduction and basic tutorial for the 2009's Nintendo Wii remake of the first game, Klonoa: Door to Phantomile. The comic is readily available online if you're curious about it.

With that, the excavation has been halted, the dream has ended, my terrible analogies have been put to rest, my archive has been shared. As I lack a romantic way to see us out of here, I shall simply bid you a fond farewell and a good night sleep. Stay wondrous, fellow Phantomilians.
