The Adam Project is just complete nonsense. But it is definitely not taking itself serious so it's actually very enjoyable nonsense. It is worth your time if you're not expecting anything meaningful from it.

Walker scobell spawning

I love how Walker Scobell just appeared one day. He’s acted in only three projects now, all within the last two years, all where he’s the main character. Nothing else. No nepotism. I think someone in Hollywood just said “Yeah I need an angelic little blond boy who watches too many rated R movies, bites people, and swears like a sailor?” and then they found Walker skateboarding in the dumpster out back and went “PERFECT”

Petition to get Ryan Reynolds to play Paul Blofis in the PJO tv show. Sally Jackson deserves an exceptionally hot husband, and Ryan and Walker have such great chemistry in The Adam Project that I just want to watch them work together again. Ryan Reynolds was made to play the clueless but loving and well-meaning stepfather, and tbh if this show gets popular enough I feel like he'd be into it.

This was such a powerful moment, and in a Ryan Reynolds movie no less. A father unequivocally tells his son that he loves him. A gushy, weepy, vulnerable, unironic, non-sarcastic, non-apologetic way. At first Reynold’s character tries to deflect in the way we’re used to seeing. “Okay dad, I get it…”

And Mark Ruffalo just keeps pressing in closer, not taking the bait, not letting him look away, not even a smirk or a smile, he projects an earnest and urgent need to be raw and vulnerable with his son.

In the grand scheme it was a simple little scene, but I can’t think of a single movie in my lifetime outside of a gay love story that has two cis men talk to each other like this. And this was in an ACTION movie.

This movie had layers and I don’t want to spoil it, but there’s a lot to be said about trauma, and how men grieve. This is one of the most surprising movies about masculinity I’ve ever seen.

The Adam Project Review

Finally watched The Adam Project! It’s really good! In particular I really loved the soundtrack. The use of classic rock songs takes intense and scary moments and adds a dash of comedy that balances out the action. The child acting in particular is excellent! Good child actors are hard to find and Walker Scobell does a fantastic job as Adam! Also loved seeing the reunion between Mark Ruffalo and Jennifer Garner! I’m a big 13 Going on 30 fan so that was a treat! 

I’m also a big Ryan Reynolds fan and I’ve really come to love Shawn Levy’s directing over the years. The only part I found unrealistic was the fact that the bullies chase Adam through the hallway at the beginning and a teacher lets them run right past and the school was only planning on suspending the kid whose face was bleeding when the other two kids weren’t injured. None of that would have passed in any of the schools I attended in the 1990’s, 2000’s, or 2010’s and zero tolerance policies have only increased since then. Also no running in the hallway has always been a rule. 

But apart from that I found the movie realistic and enjoyable! The science elements, science fiction, and special effects were very well done. Would recommend! Also, while looking through gifs for this post I realized that one of Adam’s lines is a callback to a line from Free Guy which Shawn Levy also directed! Well played Sir!
