I wanted to make their design stand out, so I created them from scratch; they're not loadouts you can find in-game. Plus a little bit of character description because I'm dying to talk about them and their roles in the story (*wearing a shirt that says "please talk to me about my fic"*).

Now I can finally draw them often!!

I tried to design them the way their silhouettes and colors stay recognisable, as if they were meant to be used in-game later, to not to break the gameplay rules. I also wanted them to look as tf2-like as possible, I studied the hell out of the 3d models and on the last three I guess it started to turn out decent. Drawing Spy is still pain though.

Or maybe it's just that I'm not attracted to the majority of the mercs visually?? That's why they don't look satisfying?? Lmao. Need to adjust them to my tastes later.

I'm not sure I can exactly explain my design choices with these... How exactly they correlate to their characters. There is something, but I went for it fully intuitively. If anyone has ideas what how and why - please let me know!

I finally finished the Demos! I really need practice drawing BLU’s kilt and I wish I added their chest pieces but I was feeling horribly burned out when sketching these, so I’ll just have to draw those later. Only Engie and Medic are left now and my girlfriend has decided Medic is next.

RED/BLU DIFFERENCES

scout: blu’s scout is the original scout that red’s scout was extracted from. blu’s scout is slower to confrontation and fight. doesn’t mean he won’t, just means he won’t immediately jump to solving things physically. blu is more perceptive, and curious. it gets him in trouble. red’s scout is a problem solver, not a problem finder. explosive energy. blu takes a minute to get revved up. they find a slight rivalry between each other; but they mainly wonder who came from who, and what came from where.

soldier: blu’s soldier is the original that red’s soldier was extracted from. blu was quite literally a perfect soldier before this. he’s quieter with the existence of his counterpart. does a lot of thinking. it makes him an effective and ruthless battle planner. but he can’t help but hesitate on the field. especially seeing himself. he just can’t separate himself from the other. he can’t separate any of the men in his battalion from the enemy. they’re exact replicas. it takes too much brainpower to not treat the enemy as his friend, and his friend as the enemy. he ends up secluding himself.

pyro: there’s no real difference between the two, even if you squint. they both get along just fine. nobody knows which came from the other. they will both live their lives once this is over. there’s just two of them out there now to keep track of. neither one of them has warned the other about the steadily building case file against them both. and they both keep adding to their growing list of legal issues. so if one gets caught that one’s getting the whole reference section of the library thrown at them. the other will come to save them though.

heavy: red’s heavy is the original that blu’s heavy was extracted from. it took something from him. he doesn’t know what. he feels fine, generally. but the sun is colder. he feels the wind chill faster. laughter is not as filling. he is not as fulfilled. something is fundamentally different. it is missing. blu’s heavy is like… santa but violent. dudes never had a bad day in his life. any day he gets to take a life is a good day to him. every day is a good day to die.

demo: red’s demo is the original that blu’s demo came from. he lost his drive. red’s demo is more than willing to laze a day away, and finds himself seduced by the drink more often than not, but when he gets his head on his shoulders, he feels pretty okay. smart, hardy, perceptive… enough. blu’s demo is almost as sensitive as his bombs. he’s itching to move, to go, to get the jump on the red team before they can get the jump on them. he drinks to slow himself down. he’s trying to learn to stop and think, it isn’t easy for him. he doesn’t know why.

engineer: blu’s engineer is the original that red’s engineer was extracted from. blu’s engie is a very serious person with a lighthearted tone. red’s engie is probably one of the chillest guys you’ll meet with an iron grip of control on every facet of his life. the only other way it can be described is red engie is never worried, because red engie has singlehandedly controlled every facet of his environment, down to the particles of dust. blu engie can’t even find the will to make moves like that anymore, and ends up laughing at the things he can’t change, or can change with immense effort. at the end of the day, they are both mad scientists. red engie’s evil laugh pitches up. they’re gonna let each other live, but they’re settling who gets to take the name dell conagher with a fight when this is all over. they planned, separately, to kill each other in that fight. time will tell who gets to be the dell conagher and who ends up the dead conagher.

medic: red medic is the original that blu medic was extracted from, and blu hates red for that reason. understands in all senses he just… is the medic. he looks like him, speaks like him, got his name. he’s got the same memories up until the split. but it was like the red doctor removed his conscience and built the blu one out of that. blu medic sits with so much guilt. and an insane inferiority complex. he doesn’t want to be the blu medic, he wants to be the medic. as opposed to red’s medic, who doesn’t even consider his blu counterpart as an actual living being even though he created him, so by that stance is the medic. blu’s willing to kill his counterpart to become the only dr. ludwig. he likes to think he’s better than the red medic because he feels bad about the horrible things he’s done, he claims he can’t help his nature. red medic laughs because if all that separates them is guilt, then is his blu counterpart really all that better? blu goes by fritz because he hates the name herbert. blu hates a lot of things about himself. and his counterpart. he’s got a lot of big dreams that require the disappearance of the other to set into motion. and while that may not have been in red’s plan, herbert doesn’t care what fritz does. he hasn’t felt this light in decades.

sniper: red sniper is the original that the blu sniper was extracted from. a lot of snipe’s humor left him when he woke up from the operating table. nothing was nearly as funny as he had felt prior. it took him a while to get jokes again. and blu sniper is just a guy but different. likes his job, does his job well, actually a generally very easygoing and accepting guy. honestly pretty goofy. red snipes has a lot of questions before he’s willing to accept answers. they will kill each other on the battlefield if the opportunity presents itself. otherwise they’re actually pretty cool with each other! they go out and say they’re twins. easier than saying “yeah i got a free lobotomy and the doctor and his engineer friend grew this out of the removed grey matter.”

spy: the blu spy is the copy of the original spy that the red spy was extracted from. the original blu spy died in the procedure. just flatlined after anesthesia was given. the respawn machine hadn’t been activated yet; and medic had a dead body on his table that he did not plan for. it had been a while since he had dealt with that. it’s a big reason medic no longer uses anesthesia on the mercs. nobody actually got to know the original spy that had signed onto the team as a mercenary. but between his two counterparts and the son that survived him, we get a pretty good idea that spy was a charming, cunning man with selective empathy and a brutal tone. the red spy got all of the charm, the blu spy got all the empathy, and they are both quicker than a whip, mentally. love playing mind games with each other. medic and engie didn’t feel a need to conceal from them that neither of them were the original, like they did with the others, who’s source material was still alive. they showed them their host corpse in the morgue. explained what happened. said at this point, they could be anything they wanted. it’s what the original has always been best at. they both found niches in the team they had the means to fill and filled them. neither one has reached out to the original spy’s family, or families. they will probably never do so.

because of their densely and tightly packed form, they're pretty much invincible to anything, from temperatures up to 1600c, as cold as -197c, and can withstand a weight limit of 30,000 tons. so medic didn't even bother adding a respawn chip to them. but he didn't count for the fact that every. single. one of those hurts like hell. death isn't even an easy way out. either wait for help, or get out of the situation themself.

on the field, they're mostly used as a pest to distract the enemy so that their teammates can get the final blow.

though they're a nervous wreck and cowardly most of the time, once attacked, or a teammate is in trouble, they act on an apeshit instinct and go as ham as they can, mostly going for the eyes, nape of the neck, or even the groin at times. its hard to hit something so small y'know.

they, engie, and pyro hand out most of th time. family bonding <3

they're mute because blu didn't create them with vocal chords since they were just gonna attach a camera with a mic to em. so since they cant talk, they use a lot of hand gestures and charades, sometimes using objects around them. fuck sign language that shits too hard to learn 😔

engie made their lil' suit, boots, and nail gun. had a blast with it since it reminded him of those minifigures sets he used to own as a boy.

nail gun works like a rifle but with arching projectiles. the arc aint that big, its mostly a straight shot.

its lonely being so small and miles apart from everyone.

Cinephile Kyle 'Gaz' Garrick

Kyle gets a job at a local independent theatre after his medical discharge. One too many helicopter crashes has permanently injured his left left and he needs a cane to walk around with most of the time.

He likes the theatre. He can sit or lean while printing movie tickets and filling bags of popcorn. The fact he can see whatever films he wants for free is also just an added bonus.

There's a strange calmness to the job. There's only two screens and they don't show blockbuster type films so its quiet. One screen is for 35mm prints and on slow days Kyle makes his way up to the projectionist booth to watch Ian, an older guy with a thick northern accent, work. Ian had said he'd teach Kyle everything he knows so that he can retire and let Kyle "sit yer arse up here all day". He likes the delicateness that film, real film, requires. It reminds him of watching Soap defuse bombs.

Speaking of Soap, he visits whenever he can. Sometimes not even buying a ticket, just a bucket of popcorn and talking to Kyle for hours. He asks about which film showing has more nudity ("It's always the French ones, yeah?"). Kyle rolls his eyes but its nice to have someone to talk to and Soap will always sit and watch a movie without complaint though he has fallen asleep before. He even downloaded letterboxd just to comment and like Kyle's reviews.

Price is his other visitor, though less regular. Always asking about his leg, his jaw stiffing with guilt. Price had been the one to pull him from the wreck, he and Simon having to lift part of the wreckage off his leg. Last minute choice to have Kyle stay on the helicopter while Price commanded from the ground ("You broken?" "I think I am, sir."). Price had a habit of bringing offerings; sandwiches, coffee, books, the occasional blu ray ("Soap said you liked this one").

His sister always came to walk him home. She moved in with him after his discharge ("It's cheaper and I can get a better job in London") and he suspected it was his mum who encouraged her to. He did like living with her. It felt like they were kids again in a way. Before he never slept well with the quiet, used to someone always moving around on base. She was always up late and he'd grown accustomed to falling asleep to Love Island playing in the living room.

She was always done to watch movies with him and listen to him blather on about trivia. ("The director of this was murdered. Some blamed it on his last film being so controversial but now it's believed to most likely have been a mob hit or because he was a communist.") She didn't comment on his decor being mainly film posters, collectible memorabilia and fancy looking box sets.

He misses the adventure of 141. He sometimes gets angry when his leg hurts so much he can't breath or when it locks up and he has to hold onto Soap or his sister for extra support. But he likes the theatre.

Even more so when the manager comes in one day with you in tow. Ian wants to retire soon so he can spend time with his grandkids. Kyle will train you to run front before Ian trains him to be a projectionist. Kyle had never been happier. Especially with you being so cute and actually being knowledgeable about the films they show here. ("if you ever want to grab coffee, we can talk more about the job or whatever." "Or whatever?" "Yeah..." "I'd like that, Kyle.")

Some notes that I wanna mention:

• RED team doesn't have a Medic or Engineer. They didn't want to have Supports at all, and only do because Admin forced it. Their last Spy won them battles, and their current Spy and Sniper match their energy, so they tolerate it.

• No one truly knows who the former RED Spy was, just that he was dubbed "The Devil," and the most ruthless Spy in the nation.

• Steve doesn't wear a mask because he has nothing to hide. Tommy wears one to cover his freckles and insecurity.

• BLU - especially Nancy - did not want a Spy on their team due to the bias and trauma the former RED Spy instilled in them. It took a while for them to warm up to Steve, of which he never rushed.

• BLU is far more comfortable in their positions thanks to each other, so most of their uniforms are customized and personal, as well as referring to each other by name after hours. RED sees their place as a cruel job, so most stick to the classic uniform regulations with minimal modifications and only use class resignation for names.

• Despite using the original Medi Gun fluid invention by Dr. Ludwig in the 60s, Will has dubbed it the NAT-20 (Natural Acceleration Trigger times 20) after D&D. The solution's components are relegated to Medics only, but he's told the formula to Dustin, Mike, and Lucas, in case something happens to him.

• Steve and Nancy already knew about Tommy and Carol before they joined, and once they figured out who they were, the bitching is endless. It's the only thing they find a middle ground on.

• Dustin's "goggles" are a design on his cap, which is reinforced so he's safe. And the brace on his leg is referencing his limp at the end of ST4, currently (as of posting) no in-AU reason for it yet.

• Vecna is the equivalent to Merasmus, and he does have a tense relationship with the Soldiers, though Eddie's began in the past - what do you think that government aid was for? - and Billy's more recently. He doesn't bother with the Demomen, they're both too stubborn to fall for his tricks. And yes, he and the Byers-Hopper family still have history - again, where do you think all the government/medical history came from?

• Eddie's tattoo on his left arm says "Ut Numquam Currere," which is Latin for "To never run."

• Yes I gave Vecna his hair back, but that shit is so brittle, it usually crumples apart with any wind. If/When BLU fights him, he looks fucked up. Also, the bit of Upside Down he carries fluctuates sometimes, but he's found the vines to be most reliable.

• I made Brenner a bit nicer because I wanted the Hopper family to have a win somewhere, considering their lore in this AU is a bit... rough, to put it lightly...

• I did my best to make the loadouts make sense character- and game-wise, but there may have been some bias slipping through for BLU. Also, I did make sure to include weapons that double as cosmetics in their poses, such as with Billy and both Snipers.

• I took away Class emblems just because I don't really think it matters to them anymore? There isn't quite a reason why this company is still ongoing, so why keep up that part too? :P

• Fun fact: Dustin and Lucas used to be switched in class purely for the SpyDad & Freedom Fries family - because of course there's Steddie in this AU, do you not understand who wrote this? - possibilities. Stopped being stupid and switched them to their proper places.

• Aged everyone up a few years because despite the presence of Olivia Mann in pre-comic-7 lore, I didn't want this company to take on legit kids for the merc positions. Explanation in the lore post once I finish it.

• The scaling issues - why some of them look bigger than others - are just because I'm bad at art, there's no lore reason /lh

• I literally have no clue who Saxton, the Mann family, or TF2 Classic mercs are, or if I'm even gonna keep them in this AU! This is more of an addition AU to the TF2 universe, so whoever fits can go there, but I've got nothing rn :/ Still have the main secondary characters like Murray, Enzo, Yuri, Suzie, etc. that don't have places yet, so if anyone has anything, lemme know!! :D

Have you ever wanted to make the TF2 guys drown in a pool? Or perhaps... kiss? Well, now you can! Here's a list of my TF2 Sims 4 custom content. Playtested, all LODs, all base game compatible. If you come across any problems let me know, but I don't think you should.

I made 3 items for Scout: his cap with headset, shirt with rolled up sleeves (comes in RED and BLU), and a necklace with 2 dogtags.

For Sniper I converted his hat, made a pair of sunglasses with a yellow tint, and added his facial scars. The scars can be found in skin detail, freckles. Also for Sniper I took a vanilla hairstyle and drew on his funky hairline.

Here are 3 vests I made by combining and changing some vanilla vests. The one on the left is intended for Heavy, as it has t-shirt sleeves. The two on the right can work for either Demo or Sniper, as both have sleeves rolled up to their elbows. Both contain swatches with and without Demo's long undershirt sleeves. All vests come in BLU and RED.

Also shown here, on Demo and Heavy, are a pair of pants I converted from Strangerville's army career. See, normally when Sims 4 pants tuck into boots, the lower sections of the pants just disappear. But with these, because they include the shoes, the pants puff up over the top of the boots. There are 5 swatches: brown/grey, RED, BLU, and RED/BLU with gradient.

On Heavy and Sniper are black fingerless gloves. There is a swatch with gloves on both hands and a swatch with one glove (for Sniper).

Shown with Pralinesims' eye patch. Also, for Demo I used a white left eye from my Bad Batch CC for when he takes it off.

For Soldier and Engie I made these hats from scratch. Soldier's has two swatches to match his RED and BLU outfits. Engie also gets a pair of goggles.

I made Spy's mask by editing the ninja mask from the Spooky stuff pack and Pyro's by recoloring the inaccurate scuba mask from Island Living. It's not exactly a gas mask, but I really did not feel like making one from scratch and I'm not satisfied with any gas mask CC that already exists.

Pyro's mask also has a version with cat ears. For pary time, of course. Their shirt, while not exactly like Pyro's in-game shirt, has a similar silhouette which is why I chose it. There are white, RED, and BLU versions with and without the balloonicorn graphic.

I also made Pyro's gloves. The second swatch adds a black covering on the neck so that Pyro can wear many shirts without showing skin.

Here are the outfits for the rest of the characters.

Medic has a recolor of the Get to Work lab coat, RED and BLU, with and without gloves.

Spy has a recolor of the base game pinstripe suit in RED and BLU.

For Pyro, in addition to the shirt, I made another pair of pants with gradient, but this time they can go with taller boots. The boots do not come with my CC.

Engie has a recolor of the handyman overalls, in RED and BLU. I also made the gunslinger as a glove. There are two versions, with and without the bulky wrist part, so that it can still work with long sleeves and not clip.

Miss Pauling's dress has 3 swatches with different shades of purple. Please ignore the shading issues in this post's cover image; it has since been fixed but that pic was so hard to get I'm not retaking it.

I have added a few build/buy options. The 2Fort roofs (shown in the 2Fort images earlier) are a recolor of roofs from Werewolves. I also added the gym and meeting room walls from Expiration Date.

Mercenary Career!! Branches for all classes, plus branches for the Administrator and Miss Pauling. Script mods must be turned on and the files for this cannot be more than 1 folder deep in your mods folder.

Convex Portrait (A Holiday Gift)

Merry late Christmas, early New Year, and on-time Hanukkah! I know this year has been light on updates, but I hope you enjoy this little oneshot from BLU Sniper's POV that will be added to the Interludes.

I hope everyone had a great year and will have peace and growth in the next!

The sun beating down on the roof, heating the shed below until shirt and vest sit heavy against skin, sinking into shoulders, has long since ceased to be anything more than a trivial detail. It is nothing more than the light that makes every red uniform on the field dazzling even through amber lenses, that makes it impossible for anyone to hide from his crosshairs. The scout, skittering around the corner, cocksure, has no idea his head is neatly aligned, perfectly square, face divided into four quadrants.

“Gotcha.”

The BLU sniper is a professional, and does not linger when the job is done. Blood does not particularly interest him except as the signal of a successful task. Once it flashes in the sun, bright and burgundy in a fine mist, it is time to move on. Below, a shotgun blast drops the enemy pyro—and the point is quiet for now, his team's engineer putting the finishing touches on a new sentry. With the area confirmed clear, Sniper directs his attention elsewhere, scouring the field through his shooting glasses for a potential target. 

A flash of red in the shadow of one of the storage sheds just east of the point, a flutter of white. Through his scope, the shapes clarify into not two, but three bodies—the enemy medic shadowing their specialist, locked in combat with Heavy, missing his own customary shadow. The angle is all wrong for a good shot on either RED, and Heavy's bulk fills the scope as his minigun rattles away against the specialist's shield. Even if Sniper didn't care about friendly fire, the bullet would never exit Heavy's chest through his Kevlar, and even a headshot would put the bullet no further than the specialist’s ballistic shield. Useless. 

The enemy is effectively pinned for now, the specialist unable to take more than hasty potshots around her shield while under fire, but Heavy's bullets aren't endless. He will have to load a new magazine eventually. Hopefully he'll have the sense to move first. 

The altercation lasts only seconds. Were he on the ground himself, Sniper knows it would feel interminable. As it is, the minigun bullets run dry, and Heavy reaches for his bandolier with only a cursory step back toward the mouth of the alley—the specialist rises to take her shot, and Heavy charges. A good move, considering her gyrojet, which becomes ineffective in only steps. The minigun spins—it seems he bluffed in more ways than one—striking her exposed chest and shoulders twice, three times. If not for the medigun, surrounding her with a field of scarlet, she would be dead already, not simply shuddering on the ground, breath momentarily punched from her lungs. Heavy takes the chance to abandon the minigun, whirling on the medic with his shotgun, but the doctor is faster, jabbing the syringe gun against his throat, while the specialist launches herself onto Heavy’s back, gripping a trench knife in her fist, driving the blade into the apex of his spine. 

Sniper could take the shot on her now, her eyes wild and teeth bared, but the medic, blocked by Heavy’s body, will escape. He waits for a better window.

His teammate sinks to the dirt of the alley between the REDs. Though the specialist’s uniform is riddled with holes and stained with blood, the pair are unharmed, giddy, laughing and talking and—

The specialist pushes her medic against the wall of the shed. For half a second, Sniper thinks this might be the most insane gambit Spy has pulled for his petty revenge yet, but—she kisses him. The specialist pins the medic’s body to the aluminum siding and, unmistakably, plunders his mouth.

It's a testament to his professionalism that he takes the shot. No feeling at all. 

The bullet enters her back, just left of the spine, and by the stilted spasm of her torso, certainly passed through her heart. It exists her chest, enters his. It pierces his lung, shatters finally. The beauty of a full metal jacket. Two targets, one bullet. If they’d been better aligned, he could have pierced both hearts, but as it is, the medic does not succumb immediately as his teammate did. He shudders, his mouth agape, blood already on his lips. In the scope, framed like a porthole portrait on his granddad’s wall, the medic clasps her close to his chest, cradling the lolling head in one hand, presses her into his neck. She will emerge from respawn in a few minutes, good as new, and the medic will be right behind her. He knows. Sniper knows that he knows, but it doesn’t matter as gloved fingers struggle for purchase in the blood pouring down her back, soaking and saturating her scarlet uniform until it burns burgundy. The moment of death is painful every single time, no matter what the mind logically knows. The mind forgets. The body wants to live. The body wants to live, always.

So the doctor gasps, a ruined lung struggling to draw breath. He clasps the body of his lover. The shuddering half-breaths slow. And stop.

Blood does not interest Sniper, except as the sign of a job done. The blood on the medic’s lips drips onto the specialist's cheek. 

They are framed beautifully in four quadrants, like one of those old portraits of the dead.

Let's learn about my Sniper OC, Dingo. He's only a few days old creation-wise, but he has a lot going on already!

Background:

Dingo grew up with a pretty bad family. His father and that side of the family were basically rednecks and his mother was neglectful. Dingo learned most of his fighting stuff from his dad's side, which is why he's so talented with a rifle.

He got hired for the job as sniper for BLU after his parents forced Miss Pauling to hire him. Dingo lives in his camper van with his cat, Lucky, but sometimes sleeps in the base when the weather outside gets harsh.

Dingo got his Sniper Autopsy Scars™️ when his crazy family shot at him. He had a bad fight with them and someone grabbed a gun. Next thing he knew, he was wandering down a highway and bleeding.

The argument that caused Dingo to be shot at was about money because his parents assumed he would be giving them money as well. When he refused, his dad grabbed a shotgun and shot the first bullet. Dingo was filled with adrenaline and ran out of the house as his father shot the other. He kept running and running until the adrenaline wore off and he collapsed on the side of the road. BLU Medic drove around to find him because he realized their Sniper didn't return.

After BLU Medic brought him back and healed him, Dingo had to go through some physical therapy. He also had mental health therapy sessions because he was very traumatized. In the end, he was let go as the team's sniper because of his extended absence, but got a new job working with Miss Pauling. He basically does all of the paperwork she can't get to.

Replacing him as Sniper is his estranged older brother, the BLU Sniper. While they haven't seen each other in literal years, BLU Sniper tries to make an effort to mend their brotherly bond.

Extra Tidbits:

His sunnies are prescription, he uses them all the time because his regular glasses broke. He cannot see without them and he refuses to get contacts or a new pair or regular glasses.

He always sleeps shirtless, he just piles on a ton of blankets when it gets cold. It makes his bed so comfy and warm like an oven.

He has frequent nightmares, so he does everything to try and stay up. This affects his work because he will start falling asleep at his desk.

His favorite snack is Pocky after going to China for a trip. He likes how they taste and how portable they are, so he sneaks a few bites during work.

His eyes are green if you take his sunnies off. And that's if you can get them off, or catch him without them on.

He has a pet cat named Lucky who's just a cuddly sweetheart. Dingo chose her when they first saw each other. And Lucky chose him as soon as she was in his arms.

He's very touch starved. When he gets time to himself, and when there's a ceasefire day, he goes to BLU Medic or BLU Demoman for hugs or cuddles (eventually his brother is added to the list).

Dingo sleeps in a bed that's a bit too small for him, so he curls up. If he lays on it completely straight, his feet just barely stay on. This is partially why he curls up when he sleeps in any bed, he's just used to it by now.

His boyfriend is Milo (Creator: @the-slender-doll ).

Claude is the BLU Spy, a quiet and kind man who cares deeply for his partner, Dickie. He's willing to move heaven and earth to ensure they wont get caught smooching behind their teams backs.

~ Dickie ~

Dickie is the RED Soldier, a loud proud, and very sweet being who's just a little bit of a meathead. He can be somewhat aggressive when it comes to his feelings, but he means well.

~ Gaston ~

Unfortunately for this RED Spy, he has caught these two mingling, and has been roped into their secret. Its unknown why he hasn't yet ratted them out, but so far he has just let them be.

~ Lucia ~

Straight from Spain, this crazy BLU medic holds loyalty to no one but her own passions. Enemies and Allies fear her alike, as she treats them all with a horrifying equality. According to rumor, Claude owes her a myriad of favors, but no one knows why.
