Every time someone well-meaning suggests I see a chiropractor for my migraines, I have this little moment of "ah, you're new here. You weren't here prior to 2018 when a chiropractor very gently adjusted my neck for my migraines, and I ended up having to get an emergency MRI because the ensuing symptoms were indicative of a brain bleed."
It wasn't a brain bleed. The muscles on the entire right side of my neck "just" tore (Spoiler there is nothing "just" about that kind of traumatic injury. I am still in physical rehab for it), and I couldn't hold my head up, see straight, walk or do any of the things I'd previously taken for granted until several weeks later when the area finally started to heal.
This was before I knew I had Ehlers Danlos, btw. But this is true even for people who don't have a connective tissue disorder: Don't let chiropractors touch your neck.
There are a lot of vital nerves and blood vessels there, and even gentle adjustments of the area can have life-threatening consequences.
I know chiropractic care can be pain relieving--I still get it for my lower back and hips because I work with a chiropractor who knows about Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, and sometimes my hips need to be popped back in at short notice, and it's easier to hop walk in and see her than wait for physical therapy--but it is a short-term relief that doesn't actually correct why something is happening.
If you can afford it, physical therapy will likely help more in the long term. I know not everyone can afford it, and that's why chiropractors have such a booming trade in the US, but please, I'm begging you, don't get your neck adjusted.
The spinal cord specialist I saw after my injury told me the number one reason he used to see people for traumatic brain injuries was car wrecks, followed by other major roadside injuries. He said those numbers were still the highest, but after that, the majority of his patients were survivors of chiropractic injury.
Do Not Get Your Neck Adjusted.
It's been over 5 years, and I still can't move my neck properly on my right side. I still struggle to eat and drink because my muscles will randomly seize up. It feels like my skull no longer fits on top of my spine because of the scar tissue. Please. I just want people to be safe.
And if you are a chiropractor reading this and thinking, "Well, I've never injured anyone, skill issue." No. You Have Gotten Lucky. Rethink how you apply your trade. Please, you can still help people while recommending safer options for specific body parts. Learn to do pressure point release and acupressure. Teach patients how to stretch and relax the area safely. Just fucking stop cracking people's necks like pop rock candy.

thinking about how mingyu would go out of his way to help you deal with a particularly intense migraine.
his main goal is to remain as quiet as he possibly can, making sure that the drawers don’t close too loud or that no sound is leaking from his headphones. he only allows himself to make a little noise to bring you a steaming cup of ginger tea, which he lovingly prepared after asking minghao what kind of herbs were best for migraines.
he reads dozens of online articles on how to relieve the pain, and you’re benefitting from everything all at once: lights off, cold compresses on your neck, temples massages… even acupressure points on your hands, which he gets very serious about, following tutorials to the letter.
you end up falling asleep after almost an hour, soothed by the calming environment he’s created for you. and although he’s kept massaging you for a few minutes, he eventually shifts his weight to the edge of the bed, ready to get up and leave you alone to rest. but he’s held back by your arm sluggishly wrapping around his waist as you pull him back to bed.
“can you stay a bit longer?” you ask, “you’re comfy”
and although you can barely make out his features in the dark, you just know that a fond smile is lighting up his face.
“of course i can” he tells you, leaving a kiss on top of your head before lying down to let you cuddle him the way that feels right for you. his hand finds its way back to your head, and you let yourself be lulled back to sleep by his fingertips tracing curvy patterns on your scalp.

a/n: heyyy remember when i started this blog five months ago lmao. anyway. college is hard gimme a break. this wasn’t requested but i think it’s Neat. enjoy!
eddie can’t fuckin cook.
he can work the shit out of a hungry man and boxed macaroni but a genuine, effort-given, home cooked meal? forget about it. this lack of talent hasn’t ever bothered him though, he’s not a particularly picky guy (being dirt poor you learn to just eat what’s in front of you till you get full) so his ineptitude hasn’t created much of a hindrance. until now.
she’s not much into sharing her emotions; she’s always there with open arms when eddie falls apart, but she’s never asked for it in return. instead, she resorts to sulking in her bedroom and waiting till eddie’s left the common area to utilize the space. eddie is a grade a eavesdropper, and he wouldn’t put himself above listening through the wall to check on her when he’s especially worried. he gives her the space she knows he wants, doesn’t pry, but when he stays in the living room all day and doesn’t hear her come out of her room once, not even to eat, he knows it’s time to warp some boundaries.
“soup and self care,” she once described her catch-all sadness remedy. she’s used it on him more times than he can count and he knows for certain that it works like a charm (when accompanied by a tight hug over the shoulders and a warm kiss on the cheek, that is. she never misses.)

an hour and a half into fucking up a tomato bisque, eddie considers throwing in the towel and just ordering panera, but he worries the sentiment won’t ring true enough if it’s not from scratch. he groans loudly and drops the still warm pot of a soup homage into the sink, wiping the sweat off his brow with the black handkerchief ever tucked into his back pocket. defeated, he slumps against the marble countertop and heaves a big sigh, eyes trained on the closed, sticker decorated door directly across from the kitchen.
it’s just my period.
his poor girl.
i’m being dramatic.
she was so damn strong.
don’t worry about me.
he would give her the world. he had to.
“fuck it.”
ed slides towards her bedroom door, knocking gently. he hears her clear her throat and reinject the pep into her voice as she calls out a strained “yeah?”
“can i come in?”
“i-“ he hears shuffling, her voice gets closer to the door. “what’s up?” the shakiness in her voice makes his palms tingle and his cheeks burn. he’s hurting for her, and she won’t tell him why.
“sweetheart, please let me in. i know you’re not okay and i-i don’t wanna pry, or make you uncomfortable, y’know, i respect your boundaries and all that, but i…” the words leave him as his hand slumps over the brass knob of her door. “i can’t let you sulk anymore, kid.” his throat aches under the weight of the words that leave his lips. he doesn’t realize how heavy they are until he lets them go. “please.” with a quiet sniffle and a slow turn of the knob, eddie’s made privy to the pitch black mess of her room. she’s back in bed as soon as the door is open. tip toeing around her discarded bra and work clothes, a textbook and her open laptop, he crawls into bed beside her, leaving just enough space for her to roll over and cuddle into him. he craves her surrender, but he wants her to do so willingly. his shoulders feel hollow without the acupressure of her arms around him, he wants nothing more than to scoop her up and cradle her like she does him, but he’d rather be a gorgons lunch before pushing her beyond her limits. so, he settles on resting a hand between her shoulder blades and toying with the little curls at the nape of her neck, picking at the fairy knots and brushing them back under her bonnet when he’s done with them.
“i don’t wanna talk.” she huffs, as if he’d said anything to refute her. he just nods silently and rubs her back, smiling she presses herself up against him shyly.
“tomato bisque or french onion?” she coughs a little and sits up, squinting at him. the pale moonlight bleeding from the window and the blue cast of the doordash order screen on his phone lights him up like a freshwater pearl as he smiles at her confusion. “i’m getting panera, do you want tomato or french onion soup with your grilled cheese?” the scrunch in her nose scares him for a second, until she rolls over onto her other side and curls into his chest. the white flag has risen. his arms are quick to find her waist and shoulders holding her tight, tight, tight, to him. a slow, heated kiss to her temple is the nail in the coffin, and he’s sure he can coax her into a face mask or a back rub later on to complete the usual routine.
homemade or not, he was gonna get his girl some soup. he would get her the world.

Pretty horrific day yesterday - entire cursed, cursed back in complete spasm. Had to take two of my last four from my precious hoard of prescription d i a z e p a m just to sleep finally. Which meant me listening to The Witness for the Dead while having hilarious paredolia experiences with my eyes shut until I finally passed out around 11pm.
Woke up this morning by Alfie the cat demanding instant snuggles with the cursed back still in lesser spasms. Then my OH and Cynthie the husky came home from morning walk with her STINKING because she dived in a puddle I am concerned something expired in because the STENCH was quite hideous.
So me with my spasming back and my poor OH, who is, thank gods, wfh today but has to log in at nine, had to wrestle our stinky stenchy lorge baby into the bath for a very thorough wash with doggie shampoo, which blessedly smells strongly of tea tree oil, in under 20 minutes. Which, despite her utter adoration of any outside water no matter how filthy and stinky, she LOATHES.
Then my poor OH had to abandon me to flee downstairs to log in, luckily not to an early meeting because they were doing it in a sopping dressing gown, while I gimp around buck naked and soaking, with my crutch slipping on the wet floor, trying to get Cynthie dry in a bathroom which resembles a sodding fish bowl by that point. And she has decided that being towelled is a mix of the worst thing ever and the best game ever. While my CURSED back is *still* spasming.
She is now curled up on the bed wrapped in towel number five, and I am stretched out on my spiky acupressure mat with a shaped hot water bottle around my neck. And she is giving me reproachful looks because she no longer smells delicious to her, I suspect, but faintly medicinal with a strong hint of Eau de Wet Dog. (Much as her Noble Wolf game is strong, she cannot deny her true destiny as Princess Trash Panda and is probably already plotting bin diving when my OH nicks off to actually get dressed).
I cannot help being impressed by Alfie’s Not My Circus, Not My Monkeys commitment to staying fast asleep and snoring lightly throughout this entire affair.

Headaches
It's not clear whether MI6 attracts the sort of people who get headaches, but it's definitely an environment that causes headaches.
Q gets migraines and has a complicated regimen of medications and remedies that has evolved since he started having them as a teenager.
Bond has cluster headaches. One of the reasons he disappears for days (or weeks) at a time is to deal with episodes. The most effective medication is a nasal spray that makes everything taste awful, so he indulges his senses to the fullest when he can.
Eve gets migraines, too, with extreme visual aura. She sometimes gets just the aura - Q found out about the migraines when Eve bumped into a desk. Acupuncture helps reduce the frequency. In an emergency, acupressure can often stop the progression. Q knows just where to press (they go to the same acupuncturist). Bond knows how, too, and Eve is considering teaching M.
Tanner gets horrible tension headaches. He holds stress in his shoulders and neck, which starts the headache, then the pain makes him tense up even more. Working out helps. Bond introduced him to the heavy bag; pummeling away definitely seems to help.
M(allory) has TMJ which causes both headaches and dental problems. Unfortunately circumstances where he grinds his teeth and the bite guard would be most helpful - when meeting with infuriating politicians - are exactly the times he can’t wear it.
M, herself, never got headaches. She liked to say she had nothing but pains in the arse. However, she had terrible arthritis that she denied and tried to hide.
Q Branch builds a float tank in one of the labs that quickly becomes a favorite destination for all the headache sufferers. Q adapts some polygraph equipment into a biofeedback rig. A couple of the poison specialists chemists come up with personalized aromatherapy formulas.

In 2022, I had an estimated 129 medical appointments. Many times I had 5 appts a week, 3 in a day even.
Here is some of the necessary care I fought for all year but still can’t access:
❌ Surgery to address upper cervical instability and 2 bulging discs in my neck ❌ Physical therapy to address my thoracic pain (it took 13 months to get an MRI) and being unable to sit up for long, as well as for my right arm nerve abnormality. Every referral for PT was over an hour away. I can't sit up to drive that long anymore. They can send the disabled shuttle to pick me up, but that's actually even longer sitting up so it's not helpful. ❌ IV ketamine to manage my depression, C-PTSD, autoimmune disorders, and chronic pain (ended up going with at-home ketamine thanks to GFM donations, but IV would be better distribution for inflammation/pain) ❌An updated sleep study since it’s been nearly 10 years since my type 2 narcolepsy diagnosis and some of my other symptoms such as frequent painful myoclonus and choking in my sleep are now making it even harder to get consistent shut-eye ❌Disability benefits and Medicare as I’m now officially considered a “complex” case and have been dropped by doctors who didn't feel they could help me ❌Endometriosis excision surgery + getting my blood-filled ovarian cyst (red thing in photo) dealt with. After several months of going to multiple specialists to rule out other things, including cancer (being monitored for lymphoma/leukemia now), I was sent to a gynecological oncologist surgeon who does the complete wrong outdated terrible no good surgery. She wanted to just do a full hysterectomy and ablation of endo lesions. ❌An updated 1 year colonoscopy after my disastrous 2021 ulcerative colitis/endometriosis flare up that landed me in the hospital. My mesorectal lymph nodes are a little enlarged and there’s a mysterious lesion in my colon, which is why they sent me to a cancer doctor for bloodwork and PET scan—but I strongly believe it’s just endometriosis invading my bowels, which is why I need the endo surgery so bad as well. I'm at the point where my colon will completely go on strike and the pain from the constipation is ER-level (especially when my period from hell comes). It's also just dangerous. I've never had this problem so intensely before, so I'm being even more careful with food and supplements. ❌Pelvic floor physical therapy to help with debilitating pelvic pain caused by endometriosis and other things ❌ A pain management doctor who can prescribe me Tramadol, which helps keep me out of the ER every month, and that has minimal side effects. Something I’ve taken safely for 6 years with no complications. Instead, they'll only Rx Suboxone, which makes it hard to function and has side effects that can cause colitis or narcolepsy complications. I have to take 1/8 of a dose and I still pay for it later.
I had so many arguments with doctors to correct them when they brought up the wrong treatment, wrong surgery, etc. Not only did some of them already know it was bullshit, but others wouldn’t even try to have an open enough mind to keep learning past medical school.
This year was a lot of disappointment and frustration. I feel so worn down. This kind of medical trauma erodes hope and optimism. When intuition about our own bodies and the hours we put into research means nothing to medical professionals or insurance, it feels like we're at the end of the road. I wouldn’t wish the necessity for this kind of resilience on anyone. I wouldn’t have been able to withstand this year without the ketamine therapy or support from friends and followers. I cannot express what it means to have that, especially when I'm still pretty isolated day-to-day. To manage things on my own, I paid out of pocket for acupuncture, cryotherapy, red light therapy, ketamine, many new supplements, all kinds of new massage/trigger point/gua sha/acupressure tools. I went hard on a self-care/pain mgmt routine that I’m proud of, but I’m still very much disabled by persistent, impenetrable chronic pain/fatigue. I was thankfully able to get some prescriptions that help with flare ups, such as Xanax and Toradol. This is one of my many blessings in 2022. My fight is far from over but I want to go into 2023 with softness.
No more pushing through 16 appts per month while also forcing myself to constantly record and edit new content. I want to recline my floor chair and rest my back while I focus on editing older stuff. I have no idea how long it will take to get through my backlog of projects but I’m going to be putting certain things on hiatus so I can just take it slow.
