with my previously mentioned hiatus from everything, i didn't even realize you're one of the many tumblr friends whose taste i consider exceptional who's also a nancy drew fan?? i only finally started it last month (i'm through s1 and currently rewatching that to show it to my best friend) and i love it so far...i can't wait to be able to read your fanfic for it!!

i am but a humble member of the cult of bethany. i believe the actual chain of events were that she messaged me directly to be like “this is a good show you’d enjoy it” and i took her up on that, but it’s not, like, inaccurate to say that i watched the show to be able to understand her exceptional text post memeing.

anyway, yay, welcome to the cw’s nancy drew fanhood! i find season one much more enjoyable to rewatch and season two is my favorite, i think. once we get to the more monster-of-the-week-y episodes, i come ALIVE.

not really that special as it is just playing an instrument but i am very proud of the fact that i can just pick up a guitar and start jamming to songs. my specialties are galileo - indigo girls and chinatown - bleachers feat. bruce springsteen. also do a pretty mean all too well/champagne problems/cornelia street mashup!!!

Life Less Ordinary by Carbon Leaf, which my kids immediately pegged as sounding like a song from a Curious George movie. Turns out, it was on the Curious George 2 soundtrack. But the lines The night you came in to my life/Well it took the bones of me took the bones of me/Blew away my storm and strife/Well it shook the bones of me shook the bones of me have been going through my head for days now. Not mad about it.

The Heart is a Muscle by Gang of Youths, which came up on my playlist on a long drive to meet @catty-words for brunch, and I was so astonished at how S4-Nancy-Drew-esque the lyrics were that I listened to it eight times in a row. Also it's just a great song.

Oh My Heart by R.E.M. I'm pretty sure this was in a TV show recently and it made me remember what a good song it is but I can't remember what show.

New Disaster by Barenaked Ladies. An excellent song for singing at top volume in the car.

Last song: Honestly I am still listening to the Barbie soundtrack on Spotify. But I do listen to the radio a lot in my car and Bohemian Rhapsody came on yesterday on my drive home and I jammed to it like I was a teenager.

Currently watching: Nancy Drew S4 ( @acehardy told me we only have like 5 episodes left of the season/series. Whaaaaat? I am UPSET). Still working my way through Frasier (s10 everyone!), started the X-Files last week which has been interesting, and it would be remiss of me not to mention my West Wing rewatch though I am stalled on S5. In my defense, S5 is a a slough but I love s6 and s7 so I will push through!

Currently reading: Just finished Jana Go Wild by Farah Heron. I didn’t like it as much as Kamila Knows Best  too many misunderstandings for my taste but it was nice to see familiar faces again and the food in there sounded so delicious. In ao3 reads, I am currently working my way through With All Your Faults , a Brienne/Jaime fic that @bethanyactually mentioned ages ago. And when I say ages I mean it’s been at least two years since I’ve marked it for later. But hey, better late than never and the chapters I’ve read have been really good so far!

Current obsession: Connections from the NYT. My Wordle group chat introduced it to me last week and each morning when I wake up I instantly try to complete it. I’m losing more than I’m getting all 4 groups correct but its been fun!

hiiiiiiiii just popping in to say that i've been off tumblr a lot in the last few months because i'm behind on literally dozens of shows and also i've been trying to squeeze more executive functioning juice out of my brain by avoiding everything and everyone (results? mixed) so while i haven't seen S4 of NHIE yet, i will get to reward myself with it when my work is done and then! i will get to come see everything you had to say about it. extra bonus fun. thanks for still existing out here.

“Do I Need To Watch Breaking Bad to Enjoy Better Call Saul?”

This is for @actuallylorelaigilmore who I told I would compile a bit of info on BrBa for so that she could jump right into BCS without watching it, but I figured others might have the same interest so here it is.

Short answer is no, you do not. I don’t like BrBa at all (nobody @ me, it’s exhausting to watch and Walter White is trash) and BCS is my favorite show. My knowledge of BrBa has been compiled from the few episodes I watched, some general pop culture osmosis, and skim-watching for all of the Saul scenes in season two and on.

But if you want some basic Saul-specific knowledge so you’re on the same footing as the people who did watch BrBa, this should be enough (and much of this you may have known already just from how prevalent BrBa is in pop culture). It’s a great time to start BCS since the mid-season finale of the sixth and final season is tomorrow night- you’ll have time to catch up and can then suffer the back half of season six live with the rest of us. 

BrBa spoilers obviously, but only in like a very loose and general way.

Saul Goodman (real name Jimmy McGill, although I think when BrBa was airing he only referenced “McGill” once and didn’t give a first name) is a defense attorney in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This is a description of him in his first episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvlEqAjg8aU and that sums it up pretty well. 

He makes low-budget commercials (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqnHtGgVAUE), wears brightly colored gaudy suits, has the dumbest haircut in the world (fun fact: that was Bob Odenkirk’s idea/fault), and is in a lot of ways the comedic relief on the show. The main characters Walt and Jesse are cooking and selling meth, and they hire Saul to be their lawyer and launder the money they make in the drug business (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhsUHDJ0BFM). He has a lot of shady contacts and is able to help them form some connections throughout the show, and is overall pretty down with doing scummy things. There is at least one point where Walt has done something horrible and Saul tries to back out of working for him anymore, but he effectively gets intimidated into continuing.

At the end of the series when it becomes clear that law enforcement has figured out where the meth money is going and that Saul is involved, he goes to one of his contacts known as “the disappearer”, who runs a vacuum cleaner repair business and provides false identities and relocation to people looking to escape the law. He sets Saul up with a fake ID and tells him he’ll be going to Nebraska, and that’s the last we see of him.

That’s... kind of it, really. There are a number of characters in BrBa that are going to show up in BCS, but most of them are in a “oh hey look who it is!” kind of way. So while it may go over your head, I don’t think it will diminish your enjoyment of BCS at all since BCS is a prequel.

Maybe one other thing to keep in mind about Saul in BrBa is that we never see his home or learn anything personal about him or about his life outside of work. One of the biggest mysteries as we move forward in BCS is the question of “where is Kim?” during the BrBa timeline, because she does not appear at all. Certain people will insist that this must mean she’s dead, but those of us with critical thinking skills recognize that since BrBa came first, the character of Kim had not even been invented yet*. And while part of the draw of BCS is seeing what exactly is leading Jimmy McGill into becoming Saul Goodman, I pretty firmly take the stance that Kim dying isn’t it. Frankly, the writing has always been better than that. The show might ultimately tear our still-beating hearts out of our chests, but I’m very confident that the way they do it will be extremely nuanced and well-written.
