So we all know by now that Dazai is comfortable enough around Chuuya to show nervousness/worry.

Enough times for Chuuya to pick up on that pattern. The pattern, may I remind you, that doesn't have evident correlation to either nervousness or worry to most people. One that can even be interpreted as misplaced given the situation.

Which means that Dazai has done this in front of Chuuya so often, that Chuuya at first was hella confused, before he finally made a connection between when and why it happens. And still remembered that connection after four years of separation. Which gets us to my point:

What if this isn't the only emotion Dazai displays weirdly?

What if he has multiple unconventional patterns he displays for sadness, frustration, content, or disgust? The times he really feels them, and they become too strong for him to just deal with normally? What if these are the only times he's actually being genuine with his emotions?

And Chuuya is the only one who is familiar with them all?

Dazai would be jumping rope and Chuuya would be like, "quit sulking, let's get icecream"

Dazai hanging upside down on the couch and Chuuya going, "It's okay, mackerel. You can cry."

Dazai actually crying, full on heart-wrenching sobs, and Chuuya unironically going, "What, good news?"

It's just... comforting, for one person in Dazai's life to read him like a book. Everyone else would look at him like he's crazy, displaying wrong emotions/behaviors at the wrong time, but Chuuya knows that it's just how he processes feeling properly, and thus he's the only one Dazai can count on to put things into context and understand, which makes him display them even more openly.

Because Chuuya never shamed him for his quirks, as much as Dazai never did his.

im sitting here wondering how the ADA would react to skks dynamic in canon. cus like..... I don't think ANYONE from the ADA has ever actually seen Dazai and Chuuya in the same room. and the way Dazai talks to and teases Chuuya is SO DIFFERENT than how he behaves with the people at the ADA that I feel like they'd get fucking whiplash from it.

Chuuya: "I'm sorry?"

Kouyou: "Go speak to the boy to sort out your issues."

Chuuya: "I should get to work too."

Chuuya: "Plus, I don't think thats the solution Ane-san wants me to take right now.."

Chuuya: "I need to, right? In order to speak to him."

Chuuya: "I should be home by then. That idiot doesn't do anything so he should be free too.."

Dazai: "What did I do?!"

Teen Dazai attempting to get facial piercings because he overheard Chuuya saying he wanted to get them and, yes, he will put holes in his face just to do something before Chuuya. Only he freaks out before the needle/gun could get near him and runs out the shop.

But he did see some really nice piercings in that shop and sometimes he does want to be fancy and he does like pretty shiny things. Unable to bury his curiosity he bought clip on piercings to try out. Debating whether the pain would be worth the look. Then Chuuya saw him in them and thought they were real piercings so he had to keep up the ruse, rather than admit to them being clip ons.

Chuuya makes fun of them at first, calling Dazai edgy for getting face piercings but really it's because he can't handle just how good they look on Dazai or that Dazai got piercings before him.

He waits a week or two before getting his own, without telling Dazai. When Dazai sees them, he gets his revenge of making fun of Chuuya for "Copying him" No matter how much Chuuya claims to have wanted to get the piercings way before Dazai ever thought of it. Dazai also can't cope with how cool Chuuya looks with piercings either.

Dazai's deception does come to an end when he gets punched in the face on a mission and his clip on goes flying. Seeing this, Chuuya gets real mad and kicks the other guy through a wall, then he runs up to Dazai all concerned. Dazai doesn't connect the dots until Chuuya is in his face, cupping it in his hands and saying "Holy shit, I can't believe he tore out your piercing, are you-"

He watches the realization dawn on Chuuya, the concern morphing to confusion, to anger fueled by embarrassment. Shoving Dazai backwards by the face Chuuya is yelling now. "THEY WERE FUCKING FAKE THIS WHOLE DAMN TIME!?"

And Dazai is cackling from the ground because "Chuuya cares!! How lame! The poor doggie is so concerned for his master!"

I found this in my drafts and I have no idea when I wrote it. I thought I might as well share it since I don't know if I'll actually post that fic.

(For a bit of context: Chuuya is visiting the ADA because of a job)

Chuuya followed his line of sight, noticing his confusion. “Dazai likes to bite,” he explained as if that was a completely normal and not at all weird thing to say. Or maybe dealing with Dazai made weird things seem normal. “I’m just glad he stopped trying to bite me instead.” Okay, Atsushi didn't want to know about that. He just nodded and hurried to typing on his computer. Chuuya snorted, amused. But apparently, the world hated Atsushi because Kenji, pure and innocent Kenji spoke up. “Dazai-san used to bite you, Mr. Fancy Hat?” Atsushi felt he was going to cry right then and there. His fear only spiked when Chuuya smirked, clearly as much a menace as Dazai, even if he was more subtle about it. No wonder everyone was so afraid of their partnership if this is what people had to deal with. How did the mafia even survive these two? “Yep, want a story?” Kenji smiled and nodded eagerly.

theres something so terribly sad about how beastzai is very much the omniscient character that everyone thinks canonzai is and yet elements of his plan are so deeply flawed because he doesnt know how to work around creating anything solid without beating it together.

atsushi and akutagawa are friendly instantly. theres no reason the two of them couldnt build each other up by working together. aku himself develops his ability so well in beast because hes being tended by gentler hands than he is in canon. he flourishes under kinder teaching. their partnership could easily have been grown the same way. but dazai cant see that.
