well, honestly. freak fortress is a little hard to describe. yknow how back in the day gmod and sfm videos were needlessly gory and nonsensical? that’s… 70% of freak fortress. But it’s good! It’s good i swear

freak fortress’ main charm (to me) is all the characters people make! if you wanna get started on getting into FF or just learning about freaks in general, i recommend checking out the Freakshow Universe wiki! (the regular Freakshow wiki is fine too, i just prefer the FSU one!)

freaks are, very typically, bloodthirsty and murderous, but there are friendly and neutral freaks too! some “starter” freaks i think are a good starting point are Painis, Intelligent Heavy, Brutal, Weaselcake and Soldine! every freak’s wiki page link to videos featuring/starring them ^_^

there’s also a Freak Fortress gamemode in actual TF2, based on VS. Saxton Hale. and a few freaks appear in the Slender Fortress gamemode too :)

i do also have to say, FF really is a relic of its time, but a lot of content and Freaks themselves are. Outdated, to put mildly. These were characters and videos made in the 2010’s so there are some bad eggs and there’s humor that can be considered very unsavory nowadays, but I really do mean it’s a small percentile in an otherwise very, very charming (and entertaining) look into the sfm/gmod community of the time!

As usual I read your tags always and so you said Apollo did not ask for resurrection of Asclepius and Hyacinthus so i just wanted to share this. About Asclepius death I read it on theoi.com, that earlier authors don't make him resurrect as a god but that's a later development mentioned only by Roman authors like Cicero, Hyginus and Ovid. But still Apollo has a role in Ovid's version

Ovid, Fasti 6. 735 ff (trans.Boyle) (Roman poetry C1st B.C. to C1st A.D.) : Clymenus [Haides] and Clotho resent the threads of life respun and death's royal rights diminished. Jove [Zeus] feared the precedent and aimed his thunderbolt at the man who employed excessive art. Phoebus [Apollon], you whined. He is a god; smile at your father, who, for your sake, undoes his prohibitions [i.e. when he obtains immortality for Asklepios].

So here it is actually because of Apollo the decision was taken to resurrect him as god. And with Hyacinthus, I don't think I've read about Artemis playing the primary role. I know in Sparta there was a picture of Artemis, Athena and Aphrodite carrying Hyacinthus and his sister to heaven.

Second, my lord Oiagros wove a winding lay, as the father of Orpheus who has the Muse his boon companion. Only a couple of verses he sang, a ditty of Phoibos, clearspoken in few words after some Amyclaian style: Apollo brought to life again his longhaired Hyacinthos: Staphylos will be made to live for aye by Dionysos.

So since he is singing inspired by amyclean stories it probably means in that place it was believed Apollo was the one to bring back his lover to life.

Apollo as god of order was very important so i think it shows how special these people (and admetus too) were to him that he decided to go against the order for them 🥺

I'll preface my response with this: Hyacinthus is by far the hardest of these to get accounts for because his revival itself, as you very astutely point out, is generally accounted for in painting/ritual format which muddies the waters on who interceded for what. I wasn't actually familiar with that passage from the Argonautica - and certainly didn't remember it so thank you very much for bringing it to my attention!

That said, what I've come to understand, both about Hyacinthus and about Asclepius is that in the accounts of their deaths, Apollo's position is startlingly clear.

For Hyacinthus, it is established time and again that Apollo would have sacrificed everything for him - his status, his power, his very own immortality and divinity. Ovid writes that Apollo would have installed him as a god if only he had the time:

Many other writers too speak of how Apollo abandoned his lyre and his seat at Delphi to spend his days with Hyacinthus, but they also all agree that when it came to his death - he was powerless. Ovid gives that graphic account of Apollo's desperation as he tries all his healing arts to save him to no avail:

Bion, in one of his fragments, writes that Apollo was "dumb" upon seeing Hyacinthus' agony:

Even Nonnus in the Dionysiaca speaks constantly of Apollo's helplessness in the face of Hyacinthus' fate where he writes that the god still shivers if a westward wind blows upon an iris:

and when Zephyros breathed through the flowery garden, Apollo turned a quick eye upon his young darling, his yearning never satisfied; if he saw the plant beaten by the breezes, he remembered the quoit, and trembled for fear the wind, so jealous once about the boy, might hate him even in a leaf...

And the point here is just that - Apollo, at least as far as I've read, cannot avert someone's death. He simply can't. Once they're already dead - once Fate has cut their string - all Apollo's power is gone and he can do nothing no matter how much he wants to. And this is, as far as I know, supported with the accounts of Asclepius as well!

Since you specifically brought up Ovid's account, I'll also stick only to Ovid's account but in Metamorphoses when we get Ovid's version of Coronis' demise, he writes that Apollo intensely and immediately regrets slaughtering Coronis. He regrets it so intensely that he, like he does with Hyacinthus, does his best to resuscitate her:

And like Hyacinthus, when it becomes clear that what has happened cannot be undone, Apollo wails:

Unlike his mother, Asclepius in her womb had not yet died and so, with the last of Apollo's strength, he does manage, at least, to save him.

But it goes further than even that because Ocyrhoe, Chiron's daughter, a prophetess who unduly gained the ability to directly proclaim the secrets of the Fates, upon seeing the baby Asclepius, immediately prophesies his glory, his inevitable death and then his fated ascension:

Before she too succumbs to her hubris and is transformed by the Fates into a horse so she can no longer speak secrets that aren't hers to share.

These things ultimately are important because it establishes two very important things: 1) Apollo can't do anything in the face of the ultimate Fate of mortals, which is, of course, death and 2) even when Apollo is Actively Devastated, regretful, yearning, mournful, guilty or some unholy combination of all of the above, when someone is dead, he accepts that they are gone. Even if he is devastated by it, even if he'll cry all the rest of his days about it - if they're dead? Apollo lets them go. In Fasti, when Zeus brings Asclepius back, he does not say Apollo asked him to - Zeus, or well, in this case Jove, brings Asclepius back because he wants Apollo to stop being mad at him.

Even Boyle's translation which you used above in your findings hints that Zeus made Asclepius a god because he wanted Apollo to stop grieving. (i.e 'smile at your father', 'for your sake [he] undoes his prohibitions')

And like, Apollo was deeply upset by Asclepius' death - apart from killing the Cyclops in anger, in book 4 of the Argonautica, Apollonius writes that the Celts believe the stream of Eridanus to be the tears Apollo shed over the death of Asclepius when he left for Hyperborea after being chastised by Zeus for killing his Cyclops:

But the Celts have attached this story to them, that these are the tears of Leto's son, Apollo, that are borne along by the eddies, the countless tears that he shed aforetime when he came to the sacred race of the Hyperboreans and left shining heaven at the chiding of his father, being in wrath concerning his son whom divine Coronis bare in bright Lacereia at the mouth of Amyrus.

It all paints a very clear picture to me. Apollo did not ask for either of them to be brought back. Though bringing them back certainly pleased and delighted him, they are actions of other gods who are moved by Apollo's grief and mourning and seek to mollify him. Him not asking doesn't mean he didn't want them back which I think is a very important distinction by the by, but it simply means that Apollo knows the natural order of things and, even if it hurts, he isn't going to press his luck about it.

Which, of course, brings us to Admetus. And I'm really not going to overcomplicate this, Admetus is different because, very vitally, Admetus is not dead. Apollo can't do a thing once Fate has been carried out and Death has claimed a mortal but you know what he absolutely can do? Bargain like hell with the Fates before that point of inevitability. And that's what he does, ultimately for Admetus and Alcestis. He sought to prolong Admetus' life, not revive him from death or absolve him from death altogether and even after getting the Fates drunk, he's still only able to organise a sacrifice - a life for a life - something completely contingent on whether some other mortal would be willing to die in Admetus' place and not at all controllable by Apollo's own power.

All of these things, I think come back to that point you made - that Apollo's place as a god of order is very important and therefore these people are very special to him if it means he's willing to go against that order but, I also wish to challenge that opinion if you'd let me. Apollo's place as a god of order is very important and therefore, I would argue, that it is even more important that it is shown that he does not break the divine order, especially for the people that mean the most to him. The original context of my comments which started this conversation were on this lovely, lovely post by @hyacinthusmemorial which contemplated upon Asclepius from the perspective of an Emergency Medical personnel and included, in their tags, the very poignant lines "there's something about Apollo letting go when Asclepius couldn't that eats my heart away" and "you do what you can, you do your best, but you don't ever reach too far" and I think that's perfectly embodied with the Apollo-Asclepius dichotomy. Apollo grieves. He wails, he cries, he does his best each and every time to save that which is precious to him but he does not curse their nature, he does not resent that they are human and ultimately, he accepts that that which is mortal must inevitably die. There is nothing that so saliently proves that those who uphold rules are also their most staunch followers - if Apollo wants to delight in his place as Fate's mouthpiece, he cannot undo Fate. And, if even the god of healing and order himself cannot undo death, what right does Asclepius, mortal as he is, talented as he is, have to disrespect it?

The beauty of these stories isn't that Apollo loved them enough to bring them back. The beauty is that Apollo loved them enough to let them go.

Can you tell me which movies, books, comics etc, should i watch/read to get into star wars? I found out about obikin though ffs and i love it!! I really want to get to know more about them

fair warning: star wars is a rabbit hole that goes far deeper than you could possibly imagine. it looks like a puddle and then you step in it and it's actually a lake and you're drowning. so watch out! that said, you're in for a treat bc there's SO MUCH material available.

all the star wars material is basically divided into tiers of credibility, with canon films at the top and legends comics at the bottom. it's best to start at tier 1, move to tier 2 when that's done, and so forth, or else you might get a slightly skewed understanding of the lore.

tier 1: the movies. there's the six core lucas movies, the prequels and the original trilogy, which are the gold standard. that's the heart of it. if you haven't seen them, that's your first task. then other movies like rogue one, the clone wars, solo, the sequels if you feel the need, can round out your understanding of the scope of the lore.

tier 2: the tv shows. there's so many of these and hundreds of hours of content to pick through that fill in gaps between movies. the clone wars is your source for so much obikin interaction. the kenobi show is essential for vaderwan. andor is just good tv, skeleton crew is coming out now and also good. rebels and bad batch are excellent too. there is the mandalorian and other sequels era stuff too.

tier 3: canon books and comics. of the film novelizations (which i still consider solid canon despite disney deciding ex post facto they are not), i highly recommend stover's revenge of the sith. it's the most important book to obikin and one of the best star wars books in general. disney has put out some good canon star wars books, (lords of the sith, padawan, ahsoka, i've heard good things about the thrawn series) and GREAT comics, especially the darth vader run, which i highly highly recommend. all marvel star wars seems to hit so if you like comics you really cannot go wrong reading through any of the 2015-onward marvel comics.

tier 4: legends books and comics my beloved, while wildly varying quality, the good is so so so good. most of the prequels books are now classed this way but were canon when the prequels came out. there is a lot of obikin in books by karen miller (wild space, clone wars gambit). i love all books by james luceno (darth plagueis, labyrinth of evil). greg bear's rogue planet is wonderful for young anakin and young master obi-wan. there's a YA series called jedi quest which has them too. an example for obikin comics is star wars: obsession, part of the larger dark horse republic run, which is good.

i just found a list i made earlier of books with obi-wan and anakin in them if you want to check that out, but star wars extends far beyond the boys if you want to explore. there's just so much good lore and entertainment out there if you look <33

I am a simple woman.

If I see SVSSS content, I will like, I will follow, and I will open another tab to read every fanfiction recommendation. (Even though I shouldn't with my 64 open tabs right now. 27 of which are ongoing ff as I patiently wait for more chapters to be released.)

That's not all though.

I'm considering getting back into writing some fanfiction for my current addiction. I have a few ideas, but I would love to hear your favorite ship, crackship, headcanons and so forth!

I'm heavily debating on a few fic ideas:

SY and SJ shenanigans : Disciples? Estranged Siblings? (LBH Sobbing in the bg)

SY as a rogue cultivator, successfully avoiding LBH for most of the plot. (Switch between LBH and SY pov?)

Modern SVSSS, College!! (SJ the prettiest and pettiest of college professors, he doesn't get paid enough for this. Why is his student flirting with him? Why is his student flirting with his brother? SJ might consider homicide as justifiable.)

Modern SVSSS, SY and SQH wake up from their strange dream. Find out Cucumber and Airplane know each other in rl. Ensue chaotic best friend behavior. (In the bg cue, MBJ and LBH handling this with nothing but poise and grace. I'm lying. They're doing the exact opposite. Don't worry, I'm not a monster. LBH and MBJ find their wives, eventually, probably.)

Modern Cultivators! SY and SJ didn't think they would ever run into an actual demon, demons are rare these days. They often face ghosts and spirits. Cue SY accidently waking up a good old Blackened/Sealed Lou Bing-ge. Cue (dun dun duhhh) chaos.

Demon SY? Cultivator SY? Dunno yet, SY in the Abyss. (I read an unfinished fic about SY in the abyss, and I'm obsessed with the idea of SY just absolutely trying to get LBG to speedrun the Abyss, and LBG deciding "Nuh. I'm staying here, with you". I was also considering entire Abyss ancient civilizations because I'm unhinged, and the idea of what used to be sprawling demonic kingdoms in the abyss is beautiful.)

Have you ever accidently married the emperor of the 3 realms? SY did. Now, SJ has to ask YQ for help to save his brother. (Subsequently: You ever accidently end up with a husband? LBG was surprised, too, but he has a system, a way these things work. Just because SY is a man doesn't change anything. LBH now has to make sure his frail husband doesn't die and doesn't get kidnapped by pesky cultivators.) Three povs???? SJ (trying to save his brother and getting pettier by the minute), LBG (thwarting SJ's plans, spying on his husband, general court affiar), SY (fangirling over everything, getting himself into trouble, falling into every wife plot under the sun).

These are just some ideas, some of my favorites that I've been clinging to. Free game, take em, write em if you want. The more fanfiction and content we have, the better!

okay, i'm just gonna say this because i'm seeing these popping up on my dash a lot and i'm sick of holding my tongue:

the gaza fundraisers are scams. like: at best, they're scams exploiting your well-meaning sentiments for money. as worst - for some of the ones i've investigated (and i remind you, internet safety is my day job, so i know what i'm talking about) - they're exploiting the images of children affiliated to child pornography. yes, trust me, i'm sure.

aside from the source images, i will additionally point out that they are systematically set up by third parties on behalf of someone else. strangely, if you google the names of these third parties, they never exist (and, really, who has no internet footprint, these days?). if these were real activists/relations to people on the ground, you would find: facebook profiles, profile pages on NGO websites, twitter accounts - literally any signs of life. but of course, because they're not real people, they don't exist. (these are not even elaborate scammers, ffs.)

lastly, i will add that they're all saying they're "verified" but if you click the links, it's either just verified by another tumblr post saying "yeah, i'm from gaza and i know them" (no shit sherlock), or because they're "verified" on gofundme. now, i'm not going to go into massive details on this because it's boring but just know that generally speaking, internet "verification" typically simply means the creator of the fundraiser has provided a real passport (often stolen on the dark web) or a real bank account that match. it doesn't mean the story is true.

it is actually very very very unlikely that gofundme would ever truly verify the story behind one of their fundraiser because this would automatically prevent them from availing of platform immunity. in broad terms, platform immunity means that as long as they only host the content that is on their platform without interfering with it, they can't be held responsible/liable for said content. any attempt at genuine verification would mean interfering with the content and being treated as its publisher, and the end of their platform immunity. trust me, they don't want that to happen and be liable for any fundraiser published there.

i know the idea of donating to individual "real" people is appealing because you feel like your money is actually going somewhere useful. you don't want to be paying for the red cross's functioning costs - i get it. but you know what comes with the red cross, MSF, save the children, and all actual reputable organisations? public scrutiny. like, simply put: their fucking books are audited. we know where the money goes. and i'd rather pay the salary of a staff member of an organisation that is actually doing something, albeit all its flaws, than donating to ... child-exploitative scammers.

so: let's put it in simple terms.

the war in gaza is a genocide.

donate to genuine, reputable organisations, thank you.

Hello hello I am new to the bookbinding world of fic (as in, I’ve never bound a book or considered it, I just started seeing gorgeous bindings on tumblr) and I’m wondering: what are the ethics & rules around binding fics? What about paying artists to bind fics for you?

hey there! thank u for your question, but i’m not like an Authority on the ethics of bookbinding hahaha. I’ll answer to my opinion, though!

i think the most generally accepted guidelines would be:

when possible, ask the authors permission - to bind it or to post the typeset (for free). to this point i would add that it’s becoming kind of a general practice among fic writers to have a statement abt their stance in their bio on ao3 - i would check that first, but if they don’t i generally leave comments on the most recent/last chapter asking for permission, or if they have their tumblr listed i contact them here!

this is a hobby/craft, first and foremost. you’ll find a lot of the community discussing less the content of the book and more the skill/time/effort of actually making a book. i love it and it’s very worthwhile, but it is expensive and time consuming with not too many avenues for turning a profit

and as for profit: selling bound fanfiction jeopardizes the ff community as a whole. the police aren’t gonna knock your door down, but it is gonna scare writers into pulling their work lest they get served a lawsuit for copyright infringement. if you find someone who is open to being commissioned to bind a fic, that’s fine in my opinion. if an author reaches out and wants to pay you to bind their fic, i also see no problem with that. gifting is actually a large part of this community - a lot of binders, if they have the resources, will gift a bound copy to the author. the issue becomes when you sell like many copies of fanfiction on a public website like etsy, as we’ve seen with manacled - that is actually reportable bc of copyright, and can get the seller as well as a non consenting author in legal trouble.

so yeah those are my thoughts! there’s a lot more nuance going on in the community but i fear there are much better articulated videos and posts about it on here and on tiktok.

i hope you do take up bookbinding bc it is the most rewarding craft i’ve tried so far (and i hope you have better luck with cutting straight lines than i do LMAO), but you’ll be fine if you accidentally cross some invisible ethical line. no one is mad about accidents - it’s really only the malicious people who know it’s wrong and continue to do it anyway that everyone is mad at.

Idk why y’all use that when people have said it sounds offensive. to me if someone says something is offensive that’s when you stop saying it. You don’t double down and say well actually it’s not. First of all the word you're referring to is "bummer" not "Bummy" which would be a combination of Buck and Tommy's names. As many ship names are a combo of the first names like Buddie is Buck and Eddie.

Second a lot of words sound the same but are not in fact the same. Bummer and Bummy are two different words completely. They don't have the same origin and they don't hold the same meaning.

Also and more importantly a lot of British fans of 911 have responded to multiple posts about this topic (as the word you're referring to is old British slang) and stated that the word "bummer" is not used this way in the common lexicon and likely hasn't been for quite some time.

Furthermore many 911 fans from different parts of the world (including the UK) have also said they use the word bummer in a similar fashion to how we use it here in the United States:

So does this mean that no one else should ever use that word anymore? And if that's true then shouldn't you be trying to educate people more on why they shouldn't be using the actual word bummer vs people who are using a ship name (again not the same word) made up of two characters names?

I agree that it's important to listen to people when they tell you that something is offensive to them but here's the problem anon. A lot of you B/T shippers are not coming from a genuine place. You're not trying to educate anyone. You're not trying tell us about something (unrelated to shipping) that's upsetting you. You're just trying to control the 911 fandom as a whole. The main reason I know this is because this isn't only issue that's been levied against the Buddie fandom from you all.

Your fandom does this kind of stuff all the time. You try to shame people into behaving in a way you want them to. No halfway decent person wants to be called homophobic, biphobic, ableist, etc but these are all things I've watched your fandom use against anyone who doesn't agree with you.

The reality is you all don't like the ship name Bummy, which fine you don't have to like it. Although it was your fandom who came up with it in the first place, it's where I saw the name to begin with (on twitter). Trust and believe I have better things to do with my time than sit around thinking up ship names for Buck and the guy who he hasn't even called his boyfriend yet.

So your main issue isn't that Bummy sounds like bummer it's that you don't like the name. Plus Lou said he didn't like it (in a cameo) and it just generally sounds silly. Okay so you don't have to use it. You don't get to control how other people talk about your ship and whether or not they talk about it in a positive way.

You also don't get to throw baseless allegations of homophobia at us because a ship name you hate sounds similar to an old slang word. You especially don't get to throw allegations at us when it's been your fandom out there attacking anyone who dared to post anything for Buddie and Eddie during pride month. Your fandom attacking and literally doxxing a journalist for posting positive Buddie content. Your fandom that has repeatedly harassed the 911news account. Your fandom that left comments talking about how Ryan should end his life after he opened up about his s*icide attempt.

Buddie fandom isn't innocent. We've definitely said and done things we shouldn't have. Taken things too far sometimes and I'm sure been our own brand of awful at times too. But the 911 fandom as a whole has never been as bad as it's gotten since B/T became a thing. You all were literally called out by the showrunner ffs. Instead of repeatedly accusing Buddie shippers (many of who are lgbtq+) of homophobia maybe you should start looking around at who is a part of your own fandom and the messed up stuff they've been doing because it's not doing you any favors.

(Fyi if this shows up in other tags besides Buddie fandom that wasn't my intention. I usually do my best to keep my posts out of B/T spaces. I even usually use * to not spell the full names and ships but for the sake of clarity in this post I didn't.)

speaking of writing..it took me a while to figure out a system i was comfortable with. i'm a little all over the place in general and that translates a lot in my drafts ESPECIALLY LMFAOO if you caught one glance at my drafts it's mostly just a prompt of a few sentences and w spelling mistakes in every word cus i write them down so fast so as not to forget them LMFAOOO. but it really works for me !

i know a lot of people say it but it really works, literally just write ! it doesn't have to come out as a full beautifully crafted piece immediately, just write down anything you can and polish it up all you want later ! forcing inspiration to come to you almost always has the opposite effect, for me anyways !

for flow, i think i like to mostly write dialogue between characters out first and then write my descriptions and actions around that ! i always get more excited about writing dialogue more than descriptions (not that those can't be fun ofc !)

oh , this might help for imagery ! and idk if you've noticed but the structure of a lot of my writing is heavily based on animes and manga. like the set ups and punchlines. (massive nerd ik) like if you read some of my one shot's like this one, this one (probably one of my fav fics i've done btw) or my first born series FBRC, (especially this part) (this part was actually the one i was most excited to write, and it's heavily based off of kobayashi's dragon maid's actual good and not weird moments and soundtrack, listening to music also helps me out a lot too!)

i try to model my speech to what i think an anime episode of the scenario i thought about would look like. visualizing my writing helps me write a lot as well, if that helps ! a little fun fact for you, fujimoto's writing has influenced a lot of the way i describe situations in fics, since i really like the sorta 'childish' descriptions over super fancy ones (cus i can't write those, but i don't really like them veerry much, but a lot of them are enjoyable to read!!) i find it very endearing and it's one of the reasons why i enjoy writing childhood friends to lovers so much. it's this sorta simplistic level of thinkin that kids have if that makes sense and it works out really well if you wanna write fluffy pieces if that makes sense

some examples ! :

"he drags you around a little too hard but it's to show you something he knows you'd like and you repay him by being patient with him and letting him drag you around to his hearts content. he let’s you use the crayons he’d just denied another classmate seconds ago and when it’s really early in the morning and you’re still sleepy unlike your more energetic friend, he waits for you. sitting with you in the reading corner quietly commenting on a little bit of everything in the book you’re sharing until you’re awake enough to start the day because katsuki wanted you to be together through anything no matter what, starting the day without you was simply unimaginable."

"despite his quieter presence he always seemed to stand out to you. his bag is big enough to carry everything he needs without having to shove anything inside or leaving it half opened. he wipes his mouth with a tissue after he's done eating his lunch alone and his handwriting is pretty. his lashes are long and he's pretty."

"you hated it when people said that because the shoto you knew wasn't like that. he knew people talked about him and he hated being associated with his father. he likes the caramel you sneak in for him at school and you like the way his eyes light up when he guesses the flavour of fruit candies you make him taste. the shoto you know that ties your shoes for you and shares his umbrella with you, the one who half heartedly stomps into wet puddles with you, the one with the pretty lashes and pretty smile and pretty handwriting isn't like that."

there are a lot of other examples (im OBSESSED with this trope can you tell.) i like these sorts of simplistic childish ways of love. tiny little specks of affection that make the heart so much fonder in such little big ways..if that makes sense :>

i dunno if im just very..special, but since i have a lot of oc's and scenarios constantly flowing in my brain, most of my ideas just tend to be what i dreamed about the night before, or what i daydreamed about LMAOO. even random things that happened to me at school sorta go from "oh it would be funny if this happened to [insert character]" and then they snowball into more and more thorough ideas !

and of course as cheesy as it is the most important part is to have fun ! i cannot stress enough how important it is to be in the mindset when you're writing. it's like when people say to force yourself to draw so you don't 'lose it.' and i do think it can work to jog inspiration, but i believe that as long as you enjoy it, you'll never truly lose it. so i say, write when you feel like it and don't write if you don't, it can truly be very draining. but it's all up to what feels better for you !

Alright so I recently started Elementary and I'm a bit disappointed

Or a lot idk, maybe I had my hopes too high bc it seems to be popularly ranked as one of the best adaptation but... uhm I just don't really see it

The mysteries are cool and well crafted (in my unexperienced opinion) but I miss the fun of BBC Sherlock, the sheenegens, the jokes, the shouting, the love, the complicated relationship dynamics... I miss the cute intimacy and connection of Holmes and Watson being roomates and I miss Ms Hudson, where is she??? Maybe that's why the show lacks... a soul? I mean what's the point of adapting Sherlock Holmes to turn it into a random american police show?

Like Gregson is competent, composed, and I love his calm and protective/reassuring presence and I love that he has Sherlock's back but uhm... I don't love him.

I don't think I love Sherlock either, thinking about it... He is not quite crazy and manic enough in my opinion

At first I really liked Watson because she seemed to be a character of her own but it only lasted like a few episodes and her story felt it was only there to serve the plot. I really enjoy her quickly getting some deductive skills and getting to use them and also being so effortlessly the boss of Sherlock but she still annoys me greatly. She is obsessed with Sherlock's past but not in a homoerotic way (obviously) or any other interesting way she just... wants to know? And is only frustrated bc she doesn't get what she wants? Like girl, you don't have to know every detail of the other's demise and darkest moments to be friends with them? At least I don't think so

On top of that I'm just at the point where they will enravel the narrative of Irene being a past love interest and it already annoys me, ffs leave that girl alone, she could be a great villain/adversary/friend without it being romantic or sexual please please please

Also I should have known but a straight Sherlock actually kinda icks me in general

Anyway I still enjoy it but like a random TV show I would stumble upon. And maybe that's good bc I don't need another piece of media to consume my soul (maybe I do) but I also don't crave content so much that I would engage in smth I only casually enjoy

Maybe it's also just too early and I'll need time to get attached to the characters... idk

*voice of a guy who fails to be on hiatus even if he needs one* Hey, actually recently a topic of difficulty in Soulsborne games came up for me o: And I even had the pleasure of disagreeing with a person who was mature about their point of view! I just thought I'd make my own post, and for starters I want to link a video that lines up with my opinion on the matter very well too!

Despite what it might look like, I do not dwell on this guy's channel, but exclusively see his videos on Fromsoft's games x)

But personally, I agree with the notion that character's difficulty IS part of their lore too! That epiphany mostly came when I took over 70 attempts to defeat Malenia, who, I remind, "has never known defeat", so her being so hard at her lowest as she is falling apart was... very telling. There is a difference between just hearing the person is strong and feeling it yourself when they beat your ass, and I think this experience is a good thing to have!

There is also a selfish and possibly petty reason I have that is better described as "gatekeeping the normies". From my experience, most people who are upset at how hard these games are not genuinely invested fans that just don't vibe with having to die 600 times to learn more interesting lore but casual people who want to, as they call it, "consume currently popular media" to be able to create "relevant content" 🤦‍♂️ Wanting to be in the loop is just not what genuine investment and caring is about.

Miyazaki stated they were not adding difficulty levels because they wanted to present the challenge everyone would overcome in the style that fit them individually as a player! It feels like he is an indie dev without being an indie dev for me; caring not about attracting more players, but about giving experience he WANTS to give! Personally, it is exactly what I want from any creator - to be unapologetically themselves rather than trying to be convenient for more people! Some games are just not for everyone, and it is okay! Thing for everyone is a thing for no one, in the long run. Heck, I am so horrible at playing From's games that even my friends would laugh at me if they saw me streaming :/ What fits me as a player is to show resolve grinding stats (I listen to podcasts meanwhile xD), or coming up with absolutely insane strategies no normal person would come up with fshfhsd

At the same time, there is a large community of gamer dudes who not only defends absence of easy mode in these games more than I do, but also insist on creating artificial difficulty and will mock a fellow gamer for like using Mimic Tear or Comet Azur ffs. I do not go there, but people who built their self-worth on overcoming this challenge and thus feel personally attacked if someone plays the game with "imbalanced" weapons/builds, or, heck, creates and uses photo and deaggro mods. You can probably see from my posts that for me this sort of people is nearly like just a scary legend, when for others it is the reality they delve into and that ruins THEIR fandom experience.. so I suppose I don't miss much not touching Reddit and Youtube in 99% of the time 🤦‍♂️ But I think that gamer bros would ALWAYS find a way to be toxic. Had Fromsoft's games HAD an easy mode, they'd still play them and find another stupid way to gatekeep, difficulty is just currently available tool for it! As usual I think the problem is not on the developer, but on the community that twists what this developer did into something awful

I guess my stance basically goes 'creators should not change their philosophy because that's what creating should be, but the community that thrives on artificial difficulty and "correct" ways to play is bad and should be discouraged from this behaviour'

Man I honestly have to give it too two of kique's paying patreon's. for obvious reasons can't share patreon content as it based through a paywall and illegal to share publicly on social sites.
