Note
can you please rate the giant oarfish?
Tumblr media
Today on CHUNK! FUNK! GUNK! We rate
the OARFISH:
Tumblr media
4/10 Chunk
10/10 Funk
0-1/10 Gunk
These things are so funky. (I try not to include photos of washed up or fishing catches when making posts since I know it can be difficult to look at dead animals for some when they just came to see a silly rating of a silly creature. However, I do encourage anyone who wants to look up an oarfish with people nearby it.) These things are HUGE!! They also swim vertically, which is very silly. I have no idea how these things exist. Oarfish aren’t super chunky, and I could not find any information on their secretion of slime or mucous.
Overall: 8/10
A very cool and unique fish with an interesting history and impact on world folklore! They’re also very stylish and I respect that.

Hi! I was gone for a while but I'm back again. My brother got me Animal Crossing: New Leaf and gave me his old 2DS. I love the game, even though I've only been playing a couple days; however, I don't have any friends or anything and that's the only way to get more fruit and stuff. I'd love some friends, if anyone out there still plays New Leaf. My DS friend code is 2251-9734-0905. This is worded like a work email because my brain is fried and this is the only way I could write.

mini-rant under the cut ↓
ive been really burnt out and havent made much progress with the mod lately, but i want to try power through that and get at least enough sharks and release the mod somewhere while i continue to update it. its been months since i last posted anything about this and i really dont want to make anyone wait too long or disappoint anyone. eventually i wanted to do more than just a few aquatic themed villagers and try make a whole romhack centered around that theme but i fear it will take me so long especially with my unmedicated ADHD and such. oh well, i do enjoy making them at least!

Animal Crossing Fish - Explained #230
Brought to you by a marine biologist with our last fish-passed...
CLICK HERE FOR THE FISH EXPLAINED MASTERPOST!
That's right...today we will cover the very last fish-passed; everything after this will mostly be from Pocket Camp or new AC Games going forward. So, today, let's cover the ear shell.
Tumblr media
The ear shell first appeared in AC New Leaf as part of the brand new diving mechanic where you could collect denizens of benthic habitats, primarily invertebrates. Although the ear shell didn't go on into New Horizons, it didn't really leave either. Ear Shell is just another common name of Abalone (damn you, common names!).
We covered the Abalone more than 100 entries ago (jfc), so let me refresh your memory. There I explained that Abalone are Gastropods, so their relatives are all of the snails and slugs we've covered, including the Snail we did not cover because it's terrestrial. I don't believe that the species is different here - in the previous Abalone article, I suggested that the Abalone featured in ACNH was the Black Abalone (Haliotis cracherodii), a critically endangered species of this sea snail from the Pacific Ocean due to the fact that it is apparently tasty. Because this animal is just called "Awabi" meaning "Abalone", it's a bit difficult to choose another species when the Black will do nicely. Anyway, this time, I'm going to cover some more of the Abalone's biology.
Tumblr media
Last time we talked about the shell - Abalone have incredibly hard, durable shells that are so amazing, humans are trying to engineer our own for armors and other applications. But has anyone asked how the actual Abalone is? Not really...most people, when referring to Abalone, are referring to the fact that they are an overfished delicacy that is unfortunately really easy to get to, since they love shallow, coastal areas where their favorite food - algae - will grow.
Like other snails, the Abalone mostly interacts with its environment with it's big foot, the part of its body that is tougher and allows them to suction-cup onto rocks. Abalone also have cirri running around the edge of their shell - see the picture above. These aren't tentacles, though they are similar. Many different types of animals have cirri (single form = cirrus), including other mollusks, fish, sea lilies, and many different types of worms, including tapeworms. Think of these like tendrils on plants. These growths are used for many different things depending on the species you're talking about - for many worms, the cirrus can be a sexual organ or used for locomotion, while for some fish, they aid in structural camouflage. For the Abalone, these weak growths help it navigate its environment, y'know, whenever it feels like not being a living suction cup anymore.
And there you have it! Fascinating stuff, no?
