It's been a while since I really mixed up the furniture in Rika's house, so my score hasn't changed a lot lately. I think it's interesting that the HHA just tells me how to find new furniture or new inspiration rather than comment much on what's actually there already. It's like they're tired of seeing the same things in my house every week.
I guess I can't blame them, but I don't love it.

I bought ACNH back in 2020 and have never gotten more than a B rating from the HHA. L, not yet 4, just got her third HHA rating and it's an A
Apparently my mistake was not decorating like a preschooler lmao

Consider the following: Kantaro and Shiki are both Animal Crossing players and they both post their builds on the internet and they become fans of each other (≧▽≦)

After I set up my series of seven cuckoo clocks, my score went up a little bit just due to cramming my house with more things, but the letters from the HHA didn't seem to want to comment on them. I was a little disappointed: after all, why hang seven clocks on the wall if you aren't going to be mocked by the HHA for it?

Pointers to Making an S Grade House in HHA
I guess this is also kind of a guide? It’s not like “YOUR HOUSE HAS TO LOOK EXACTLY LIKE MINE TO BECOME THE BEST!” no. This is more about furniture placement than anything. Here are things we need to focus on:
Colors/Theming
Furniture placement and direction
Usage of Space
Feng Shui
Colors and Theming
So a big question is “Does a room look uniform”? Whether it’s to the rest of your house or just the other pieces, does everything look like it belongs together? Even if it’s not in the same “line”, does it look like it could still fit? Let’s look at my entry way/living room:
Tumblr media
Yes, I’m aware my tastes in decor are similar to Barbie, but that’s not really the point. The point is that everything looks uniform. Only 9 items in this picture are part of the “Cute - White” line. I made the table and low table and customized them to be white with a custom pattern I made. The cat tree helps the books, Mom’s plush, Mom’s pencil case, Cinnamoroll’s counter/stool, and some of the posters into the look. I could go on and on, but I don’t want to drag on.
The themes of this room are:
Pink and White
Pastel Secondary Colors
Hearts/Bows
There are a few pieces that don’t fit that exact theme, but they are treated as accent pieces. It adds a bit of flare so it’s uniform, but not monotonous.
Furniture Placement and Direction
Something fairly important to both real life home decor and in game decor is accessibility. HHA marks you down if you put your couch facing the wall behind it or if certain pieces are inaccessable. Looking back at my front room, you can see that you can sit on my couch, you can turn on the TV, you can get to the wardrobe, you can sit at the desk, and you can get to all the doors.
Something else that is important is having a center piece. A focal point. In my front room it’s the table with the lotus mantis figure on it. It’s one of, if not the first thing you see when you come into this room. If you struggle with a theme, think about a focal point. Let’s look at my bedroom next:
Tumblr media
Can you guess the focal point? It’s my bed. It’s the first thing you see. And like my front room, everything is more or less accessible. (The giant bear makes it a bit difficult though). It’s good to have your center piece be something that also draws in the rest of the room. Because the comforter is pink and blue, it ties everything together, which is also important to the previous point I made.
HHA requires that every house has chairs, tables, dressers and beds. They don’t have to be in every room, but there has to be one per house at minimum. If you hang stuff on the wall but not in a place that is accessible (behind a book case) that can actually deduct points.
Usage of Space
Don’t get me wrong, you don’t necessarily need each room to look tidy. It’s more... convenient if you can get around each room, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be cluttered. Some people like that kind of chaotic energy. (I’m low key one of those people)
Tumblr media
My kitchen is clean, but it’s cluttered (because even if it’s not my birthday, every day is an unbirthday). There isn’t an open surface except where you can sit or work. So long as it has:
A focal point
A uniform appearance
Space to walk
It doesn’t have to be tidy. It can be, 100% IT CAN BE:
Tumblr media
But you don’t gain or lose points either way. It’s about preference.
Feng Shui
HHA does kinda care about Feng Shui. You’ll occasionally see statements like “It’s good Feng Shui to have [insert color] on the [insert direction] side of your house!” So I’m just gonna do a brief run over of Feng Shui in regards to houses.
When it comes to direction, the entrance is always South. So the front door is the south of the room. West would be to your left, East to your right, North is the opposite side of where you enter from.
Certain colors and materials can mean different things; White = Metal/Mental Clarity/Productivity/Completion, Black = Water/Stillness/Wisdom/Quiet Contemplation, etc)
But what does that matter? Very little actually. What HHA boils Feng Shui down to is yellow items to the left/west, red items to the right/east, and green items in the front/south of a room. They also consider furniture placement and space usage as good Feng Shui.
I honestly didn’t think about any of these things any time I decorated, I just put everything where I thought it should go. But I’ve realized that I’m actually the odd one out for innately knowing where stuff should be. It’s hard to figure out for a lot of people, and when someone like myself gets the S ranked houses on the first try, it can seem pretty intimidating. And I know there are tons of articles and forum threads about this exact topic, but I wanted to put mine out there for those who might not understand what any of the HHA grading means.
Happy Decorating!!!
