June 18, ACLU--LGBT Rights The ACLU works to ensure that LGBT people can live openly without discrimination and enjoy equal rights, freedom of expression, personal autonomy and association. They brought their first LGBTQ rights case in 1936 and founded the LGBTQ Project in 1986. The LGBTQ project alongside the HIV Project, brings impact lawsuits in state and federal courts, throughout the US, that are going to have a prominent role on the lives of LGBT people & people living with HIV. For 80 yrs the ACLU has included LGBT people in its vision of civil rights and liberties for all. They are fighting in the legislatures, streets and courts for nondiscrimination laws to protect LGBT people. Fighting for transgender rights, against discrimination in employment, public places--like restrooms--and housing. Worked to fight against relentless expansion of the criminal justice system, and to fight for LGBT people and people living with HIV/AIDS are treated fairly by law enforcement. The ACLU takes on unconstitutional conditions in jails, prisons, and immigration detention, from violence against LGBT people in custody, to police profiling of trans women of color as sex workers. The ACLU, works alongside other national civil rights organizations to advocate for fairness and equality for all.
