i want to preface this by saying i’m sorry for giving her brown eyes… she had blue eyes at first but i really couldn’t do it. pls take my word for it she looks astronomically better now.

anyways! so this card is very much inspired by the rider-waite interpretation:

and for the most part, i tried to preserve the details and colours while also putting my own spin on it! the tree in the background in my rendition is actually the panakes tree (though the bird is just a random bird). linh’s pose is fairly different from the original, but that’s the main change i made — because the original pose is fairly awkward to draw lol. i also had the water coming from her hands rather than jugs because. yk. hydrokinetic.

at its core, this card is about hope and connecting with oneself, and i really felt like that rung true for linh’s journey — especially when her arc comes full-circle in nightfall. for so long, she’s been afraid of her power, restricting and limiting herself because of it, which also rings true for the reversed meaning of this card. in nightfall, linh is faced with a catastrophe, and she must come to terms with herself in order to address it (and in fact, the previous card to this one in the deck is the tower, which represents a major change or destruction — but then is immediately followed by hope).

linh is one of my all-time favourite keeper characters, and i feel like this card fits her so well, both in terms of its meanings and its water motifs. this is also the first fully coloured marker piece that i’ve done in ages and it was so much fun! i hope i did her justice :) also some closeups for u if you’ve scrolled this far

i was going through docs on some of my old kotlc ocs to scavenge for parts to use on a new project, and tell me why in one character profile i specifically mentioned that a second character’s backstory was all figured out and was written in paragraph form rather than my normal bulletpoint brainstorming, but when i went to the second character’s page it was the most bare of them all and whatever ideas i did have were all in my head

i’m rereading the keeper series as i attempt every year and i just finished lodestar and let me just say i have always loved biana but she is CONSISTENTLY solving problems, being a good friend, and coming up with plausible plans of attack and she’s so cool and infinitely cooler than everyone else in this book which i am rediscovering

no, this YA love interest is special. see, he has trauma because his parents hate him, but get this, he covers it up with sarcasm. and he's not just humor. he's really accepting too. see, not only does he accept the main character's greatest flaw (being clumsy), he actually finds it endearing. but (and this is really brilliant on the author's part) the main character doesn't even know she likes him yet. she actually finds him annoying. boom. mind blown, right? and he's not just your typical, perfect, well-styled hot guy—he has messy hair and rumpled clothing. yeah, he's white and has blue eyes, why do you ask?
