Spain's Striking Scenery

Next up is Spain! This trip was particularly special to me and my family, as we have Spanish heritage. We took this trip as a family in December 2023 - January of 2024, continuing a newfound tradition of going out of the country every holiday season!

Located in Andalusia, one of the oldest and most beautiful towns is Ronda, a city in the province of Malaga in southern Spain. Going back to the early Celts in the sixth century B.C., it subsequently developed into the vital Roman city of Acinipo. Between the eighth to the fifteenth centuries, when the Moors ruled, Ronda was a thriving scene for architecture and culture. Due to its advantageous position atop a cliff, the city served as a crucial fortress.

Pictured here is Puente Nuevo, a bridge that crosses the Guadalevín River canyon right in the center of the city. It crosses the 120-meter-deep El Tajo Gorge, which separates the city. Beginning in 1759 and lasting 34 years, the construction of this incredible stone bridge was completed in 1793. The bridge is still a reminder of Ronda's architectural heritage and was a major engineering achievement at the time it was built.

Although all of the Andalusia region is just ridiculously beautiful, Ronda offered something that others didn't: warmness. The city evoked such a fuzzy feeling within me that I had not yet felt in the coldness of January. The people and the scenery were unlike any other, and I find myself missing Ronda especially when looking back on my Spain trip. I recommend this charming site ten-fold!

What Makes Visiting A Winery In Or Around Ronda Such A Distinctive Experience - Simply Shuttles

When it comes to spots within Andalucia that are practically guaranteed to take the breath away, there are few locations quite like Ronda. With its dramatic cliffside scenery and the iconic three bridges above the Tajo canyon – namely the Puente Romano, Puente Viejo, and Puente Nuevo – this authentic old-town settlement seems practically made for tourists’ picture postcards.

How did Ronda come to be associated with the best in fine wine? 

The western part of the Málaga province known as the Serranía de Ronda has been linked to winemaking for a lot longer than many people might realise. Wine was grown here initially by the Phoenicians, and then later by the Romans, who sent wine from Acinipo to Málaga, and then on to Rome. 

Acinipo, by the way, was a Roman city situated about 14 kilometres away from Ronda. Its ruins can still be visited today, which could make it an excellent spot to incorporate into your sightseeing in Ronda and the broader region. Indeed, artefacts found at Acinipo have included coins with a design featuring a bunch of grapes, and it is thought that even the very name Acinipo could mean ‘city of wine’. 

But enough about the more distant past; much more recent years have seen stellar growth in the numbers of wines produced in the Serranía de Ronda, and that shouldn’t be such a big surprise. After all, the combination of the high elevation and climate of this region lends itself beautifully to wine growing, with the vineyards here all situated at altitudes of 750m or above. 

As for the wines themselves, you can expect them to be fruity, spicy, and with no shortage of attitude. This helps explain why so many people are drawn to the vineyards and wineries (“bodegas”) in one of Spain’s highest regions. Expect to be able to sample many fine monovarietals and red blends from Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, and Petit Verdot, along with satisfying rosé and white wines.

Usually, most roman cities are settled in valleys and plains - the top of the mountains, deeply appreciated by celtic tribes, was (almost) never a choice for the romans. However, Acinipo was founded in the top of a mountain, in a place where the view arround is absolutely stunning. Yes, you can argue that Acinipo was a pré-roman settlement, but, usually, romans would transfer the village or city from the montains to  a plain or a valley... and, in the case of Acinipo, that didn't happen.
