For this earth day, we want to share 5 things we want to change after we return to our "new normal" and have a more sustainable business and lifestyle. 1. Use and support more businesses like Architectural Clearing House that buy and sell reusable building materials, diverting tons of construction materials such as doors, windows, pluming fixtures and glass from ending up in landfills. 2. Fabricate using more local materials in controlled environments. 3. Encourage more online meetings, working from home and carpooling to job sites when we can. 4. Include more energy efficient design solutions in our projects for our clients. 5. A few days ago I celebrated my birthday: I am a sweet sweet 38! Today's post is an homage to my favourite food publication, Gather Journal, specifically this: https://bit.ly/2tyVNvJ To say they are my food styling heroes is an understatement. Does butter love bread? Do apples love cheese? Why do my metaphors involve dairy when I'm lactose intolerant? In art school, your education involves copying the masters to learn their techniques, to be able appropriate them according to your needs. I'm on the fence about that approach, as I know more than a few students who had to exorcise the demons of study to find their own voice post-degree. However, I'm reminded of an anecdote about Daniel Day Lewis, preparing for his role as the couturier Reynolds Woodcock in Phantom Thread. He copied a Balenciaga dress from a sketch, and in doing so discovered that the Master incorporated a gusset under the arm to get the fabric to drape properly. It gave the actor a new appreciation for the technical considerations of high fashion design. More than copying a look, imitation can allow insight into the creative process, the thinking around how something is made. The Why behind the How. What a great company and a great bunch of people! • Such focus on community and doing their best to reuse good materials that are already in circulation. • This is most definitely what we need more of in the construction industry. • Nice work and congratulations on the new building! • @hibco Our organization is people centered. Being a community and having a sense of belonging is crucial. With our growth over the years, our finance team has been working out of one location while the operating team out of another, so we needed to change that. To find a building that could house both of us, we had a lot of boxes to check but I’m glad we found the perfect building for our expansion.   We wanted to reuse a structure that otherwise would have most likely been torn down and disposed of in a landfill. We see tons and tons of waste from our industry and want to do our best to reduce waste as much as possible for the sake of our kids, the next generation, and the planet. The team is working hard on making the building more energy efficient and getting it ready for our move.   It’s taking a lot more effort and time to reuse, rather than to build new. We also had the idea of building out our offices with left over and reused material, so we reached out to some local guys that are making a big impact in keeping our planet sustainable. We have been able to reuse hardware, lighting, flooring, framing material and @achouseyeg even dropped off windows for us to try and incorporate in our design before we purchased them. Also, we wanted a location close to public transit so our team can easily get to work without having to rely on a personal vehicles and have access to local restaurants within walking distance.   We can’t wait to finish our new building. I have recently learned that some friends of @achouseyeg are having to close their business of 35 years. • @twiliteframes in Stony Plain is closing down and working on liquidating everything. The picture is of a sea can full of picture framing material that they need to move along and on their page they are selling everything else to do with picture framing.
