while i've been going through my full-series subtitle patching of kill la kill i got to this exchange from the end of episode 2 (the tennis episode):
Tumblr media
"Court de wa tayoreru mono wa hitorikiri"
Tumblr media
"Dare mo wakatte kurenai da yo"
these official subtitles are more or less completely accurate but i was kind of scratching my head at ryuuko's response here and couldn't understand if there was some deeper cultural context or grammatical error i was missing (for the record: i would not say my grasp on japanese is deeply extensive).
then it hit me: wait, tennis? when this show's target audience is primarily showa-era otaku? this is probably a fucking aim for the ace reference.
i double checked and sure enough, they're almost exactly quoting the first opening of aim for the ace at one another.
youtube
"Court de wa daredemo hitori hitorikiri Watashi no ai mo, watashi no kurushimi mo Dare mo wakatte kurenai"
hakodate says the first line, ryuuko skips the second and throws the third line back in her face while adding a "da yo", an informal particle that adds emphasis to the previous statement.
i'm not sure if there's some widely agreed-upon consensus translation of aim for the ace's opening so i wasn't fully sure how to subtitle this while making sure to preserve the reference, so i just went for discotek's official release of aim for the ace which translates those first three lines as:
"On the court, everyone's all alone Neither my love nor my pain No one understands them"
essentially ryuuko's cutting hakodate off to say "oh boohoo, woe is you, eat shit"
then courtesy of a suggestion from @mkcannothelpyou for ryuuko's response, i subbed the exchange as:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i have a couple doubts about doing it this way because it's not quite 1:1—hakodate's quoting of the first line changes a couple words to make it more about self-reliance—but i wanted to make the intended reference more obvious to a theoretical western fan that might have consumed aim for the ace through subtitles.
there's probably dozens of references in this show that fly right over my anglophone head but it was nice to work at catching the one that the entire climax of episode 2 hinges on lmao

Midorikawa Ranko wears a suitjacket to school. She smokes leaves at sunset. She shatters tennis balls in a single swing. She is 70% legs. I would go to war for her.

I saw that you retweeted some Ace o Nerae on Twitter! Does that mean we might be seeing any Ace yuri from you?
Ah! Aim for the Ace, I think it was K who retweeted some Reika fanart today, and I believe she drew Reika and Ayumi not too long ago. The anime was really good!
I really liked Kyoko (after her turning point) and I lowkey ship Reika and Ranko. So maybe some art of them in the future. 👀💞 I’ve only watched the 70’s anime, I still need to watch the newer anime and the OVAs! 🙏

Shin Ace Wo Nerae 25 (Final)

I really recommend Ace o Nerae to most of you. If you follow this blog, you probably like romantic rivalries and this manga has one of the most interesting rivalries I’ve read. I could go on about it later if anyone’s interested.
