Someone asked me, as an asexual, when I play video games, why am I so excited about choosing a love interest for the protagonist?

The short answer is, I love love and the protagonist isn’t me.

The long answer, when I play video games, the protagonist isn’t a self insert (if that’s how you play, that’s fine) I may decide what the protagonist is going to do or say, but when I start and continue to play I’m writing their backstory. I’m taking what the game gives me and I’ll tweak my writing to fit the narrative. I’m helping write their future.

As for the romantic part, I pick my favorite supporting character. Sometimes it’s just because I like them and I think they’re cool. Sometimes I pick them because I wouldn’t mind being in a queer platonic relationship with them myself. Yeah, there’s always sexy times, thankfully you can usually skip those scenes, but I understand that the vast majority of people like sex and that’s okay. My protagonist, who is not me, can enjoy sex.

I understand there are people who don’t like the romantic aspect and that’s okay. I don’t think video games should make you fall in love. It should always be optional.
