Hi there! I have a UK specific question for Dead Boy Detectives. Something I see a lot in fic is the hc that Charles is working class and Edwin is rich. Do their different accents (like in the post you just reblogged) support this hc or is there other cultural context that I’m missing? I thought their differences in presentation were just down to era, but I’d be interested to hear what you think!
Yes! Charles' accent is far more commonly associated with working classes and Edwin's is much more common in the upper/middle classes (and Edwin's accent is more the type of accent you're taught to emulate if you have a regional/working class accent and want to be taken seriously in your career etc.). It's not the only indicator, Charles' involvement in the ska/rudeboy/skinhead subcultures would also make more sense for a working class lad, but it's a very strong indicator.
I'm afraid I'm personally not an accent buff (I just live here etc) so I couldn't tell you *exactly* what variation of working class London accent Charles has but yes, it's quite a major hint. Not to say someone middle/upper class COULDN'T have that accent but it's definitely not the norm — and any working class kid who talks like Edwin is liable to get picked on in school for being posh (speaking from experience — I wasn't posh but my parents sure talked like they were and I absorbed it like a sponge lmao. My mum actually ditched her working class Manchester accent when she moved to London and became an opera critic among other things, to this day she talks more like a posh southerner, sounds Completely different to her brothers who never left Manc).
In the comic I *think* the school basically takes in the kids of people in active military service, so Charles or anyone being there isn't necessarily a sign of being rich, idk if show Paul Rowland is meant to be military but if not it seems likely to me that Charles' family lived in the school's catchment area so he got in as a day boy (non-boarder) by virtue of it being his closest school.
#dead boy detectives#mr. bees speaks#i am NOT an expert of the intricacies of british class culture i literally just live here#but yeah. i think if you don't get the class and accents thing we've got going here#it'd be very easy to be like 🤨 at the rich edwin/poor charles headcanons#considering Edwin's white and Charles isn't#but yeah. there is evidence and it points to them being in different classes#which sadly is probably another thing Charles had against him when his 'friends' turned on him#but yeah there's defo era-specific differences in the way they present and talk#but if you took Charles and his accent and class and translated it Edwin's time he'd probs be closer to cockney than Edwin's posh ass#anyway if any uk folks seeing this actually ARE accent and class system buffs feel free to weigh in!#charles rowland#edwin payne#classism#meta

STOP SAYING THE KENTS HAVE A SOUTHERN DRAWL
Kansas is in the CENTER of America, not the South! What you think of as an American Southern accent is usually found in places like Appalachia, the Deep South, and Texas, not Kansas!! Not every rural American agricultural community has the same accent! Kansans typically have a more midwestern accent.
it makes me nope straight out of fanfic sooooo fast
#I’m not an expert on Kansas#or linguistics#but I know some native Kansans and I live in Tennessee#the regional accents are not all that alike aside from the Americanness#and we both use ‘y’all’ sometimes#sorry if this is agressive but I NEED people to know that the Kents would not Talk Like That#this post was inspired by a timkon fanfic#superman#clark kent#the kents#ma kent#pa kent#conner kent#kon el#((((sorry to any American sociolinguistists if I’m dumb and wrong#but I don’t think I am)))))

Okay I apologize profusely if I'm wrong, but I thought I saw a post where you said you were British? If yes, I'm totally obsessed with the history of British accents and how you can tell someone's class and where they grew up and how an accent can change every mile. It makes me curious then about Callum's accent. I first clocked it when hearing that him and Eddie Redmayne grew up very close to each other yet their accents, while similar, also sound totally different? I understand it has a lot to do with class and to my ears I can hear the kinda more posh RP intonations of Eddie and sometimes Callum almost sounds like stereotypical cockney but not? And then every time he imitates his mom he puts on an even more exaggerated cockney (?) accent so what would you consider his accent to be? Does he sound cockney? Or has growing up in Chelsea make his accent a little bit more posh?
Feel free to ignore this, I just find it SO fascinating.
tagging resident brit @sig-nifier to confirm
i am NOT british, I'm new england haha. I just dated a South East London gal for a couple years and was raised with British friends online (got adopted by a bunch of 14 year old nice jewish boys when I was eleven)
I think Britian is definitely unique for how many dialects and accents there are in such a small place. Especially London, some people can tell what borough you're from from the accent.
From my understanding (and the fact my Ex could clock a Chelsea boy in 20 seconds flat) Chelsea is a pretty middle-class area. So still got some rough to it but it's pretty solidly a 'nice' area (not going to touch on how race plays into socioeconomic politics in London. i don't live there, never had, not my monkeys not my circus)
I don't think he sounds cockney and my ex was cockney. But she was SE London Cockney, Second gen indian immigrant cockney. There's so much nuance to it.
he DID grow up on a council estate which is essentially public/subsidized housing in the UK. So they also weren't growing up especially wealthy. So his accent isn't cockney, but it isn't that refined either. He's just kind of your average guy??? Like new yorker grew up in brooklynn has the accent sorta vibes.
You sound like what you grow up hearing. A pittsbugh accent is very familiar to me cause that's where my family is from even though I grew up 10 hours away.
*terms and conditions to 'nice' apply. They were fourteen year old boys in the mid to late aughts.

underrated rykard aspect: he's still got the carian accent. yeah its kind of hard to hear in most of his dialogue because of his weird snake voice, but you can definitely hear it in his defeat dialogue
so first of all you’ve actually touched on a really interesting subject of elden ring’s worldbuilding which I’ve mentioned a few times… all of the Liurnian characters were deliberately and consistently cast as Welsh voice actors! This includes: Rennala, Ranni, Blaidd, Iji, Seluvis, Sellen, Thops, Jerren, Pidia, and Old Albus. I love that they did this, because every time you talk to a Liurnian native in the game, their accents make Liurnia feel like a more cohesive and unique and separate region from the rest of the continent.
However, regarding Rykard, I’m pretty sure his voice actor is not Welsh and it doesn’t especially seem to me that he’s doing a Welsh accent... listening to his dialogue, I thiiiink I can hear what you mean about his accent, but I still personally can’t really pinpoint it as Welsh like the other characters I’ve listed. I would guess that the casting team thought it was more important to cast someone who could sound like a grotesque amalgamation between human and snake, rather than someone who had a Welsh accent… it’s not like that accent would especially come through anyway when you’re choking and wheezing and slurring your words as much as Rykard is lmao.
Lore-wise though, it does make sense that the old Rykard would have also had a Welsh accent and I’ve always interpreted him as such… unless, as praetor, he adapted his speech to match the Erdtree capital? I also wonder if the Carian royal family might have spoken the Lands Between equivalent of the Welsh language with each other? I like to think so!
#elden ring#rykard#asks#if there’s any welsh people reading this feel free to leave your thoughts in the replies/reblogs#because i’m not an expert#and let me know if i missed any welsh-accented characters in the game

i'm watching the scuffed podcast episode that lando was on in 2020 instead of sleeping (i keep skipping forward/trying to get the lando bits only because it's so awkward/uncomfy 😭 this podcast is definitely not my vibe but i'm pushing through for him) and it's so funny how uncomfortable lando and the one girl on the podcast seem the whole time. like if this were in person they'd definitely be exchanging side eyes and laughing nervously. also the fact that lando clearly didn't know what he was getting himself into when he agreed to come on and the entire first section is just him Realizing and looking increasingly uncomfortable 😭 this poor boy
#watching old lando vids#i'm so curious if he ran this by his pr people#like at all#i bet they were frantically texting him#it's also so funny to watch f1 drivers (eg lando) be on podcasts with people who don't know about f1 because they're just so clueless#and lando's always surprised by how little they know#i also love listening to lando explain f1 basics to people because then HE's the expert#which is so fun#also HIS VOICE his voice was so young and different!#why does it sound like his accent is different too?

I just . Repeating "characters are tools" you end up erasing so much about arashi's character and motivations and interactions with other characters if you avoid using her pronouns aka avoid showing she's transgender. It's on the same level of frustration with the translators i had when i saw they had Mika speaking standard English, there's a LOT that gets lost if you don't show those little things.
#and sure maybe some things wouldn't matter bc - i don't read many knights stories so beyond what's mentioned ab arashi in stories i've read#like those featuring mika and such#so i can't say for her but i can say for mika - because a lot of it is touched upon in ! which isn't getting translated#mika talks about his accent and dialect and such the most in ! HOWEVER#you still have idol story 3 where he talks with Tsumugi about how people perceive him because of his accent and#about how he feels like he's letting people down by not conforming to the positive stereotypes associated with his speech#and if you make him speak the standard language you completely lose that layer#if you erase the fact that Arashi is transgender you completely lose that layer of her characterisation and motivations#she literally has a story in !! where she talks about how much it hurts her to always be cast as the male character#in princess-knight themed shoots when all she wants to be is the princess#but how are you gonna get the full context of that if the story refuses to give you the context you had in the original#ie. that Arashi uses the (hyper)feminine ''atashi'' pronoun and that her speech pattern is one associated with young women#in ! she has a line where she asks i believe koga to not use the slur used for effeminate/gay men for her#because her name is arashi narukami and if anything she wants to be called arashi-chan or naruko#which is also additional context lost if you don't translate it right - the -ko suffix in a name is traditionally feminine#i'm no expert either but i'm a writer and i plan on working as a translator#and these are things that - if lost in translation - will impact your understanding of the entire story and/or character#whether it will have you completely misunderstanding it or just being confused is irrelevant but it's like#in my opinion as a translator it's your duty to translate even the subtext#if you need to show that arashi is transgender you don't need to say it (even tho#she did once say ''i will never be the woman i want to be'' iirc and#i do have recollection of mika telling her ''i don't really get it but you're a girl right?'')#but you should give us the same chance to come to the same conclusions which is to say. translate naruko to the best of your abilities.#idfk Nary maybe ? i feel like the -y ending is usually diminutive rather than feminine but.#something to that tune. and give her a girly speech pattern. it exists in english too.#slang can be associated with gender too#like you guys get it right.

Love that my little cousin (little...shes turning 16 next year.... HA..) grew up in my hometown but no one "corrected" her accent and she speaks so comfortably sounding like our home 🥺 My earliest memories were getting chided for sounding too country but it was so confusing to be born into southern culture and then reprimanded for acting or sounding like it. :/
Idk, I have two accents as an adult: a work accent (no dialect, very bland) and a family accent (appalachian, baby!!! Woohoo!!!!). When I come back from visiting home, I bring the appalachian with me and it shocks a lot of people who only know my work voice.
IDK!! I know it was good intentioned to split my dialect at a young age so people wouldn't prejudge my intelligence, but after taking college placement exams 6 years before my peers, finishing all college english course before graduating high school, student teaching art to the high school and the middle school across the street my senior year, tutoring trigonometry and advanced honors chemistry, enrolling in the honors college on a full academic merit scholarship....GOD how much do you have to do before you're allowed to sound like your home without people assuming you're an idiot
#Creepy chatter#I'm a cancer expert!!!! I stay up to date on sepsis protocols out of personal interest in ensuring I can keep education relevant!!#When I speak to my team or educate the overall department I fucking erase any hint of my accent out of reflex#>:| speaking w my accent is so much more natural and comfortable.#Filtering it out is like holding a verbal violin pose for days#I actually got a local retail job a few years ago (as a second job) JUST so I could talk to people in my accent w/o judgement#:( fucking nuts#I'm so glad it didn't happen so badly w my cousin. She just sounds like herself

who do you think has the strongest accent in hoa? because i swear i used to think some of them were fake, they just sounded so funny and dramatic to me
Jade (Patricia) definitely has the strongest British accent, but whether it was somewhat played up I’m not sure. As for American, they all kinda leaned into the nasally overannunciation that a lot of people feel characterize an American accent. Which means they all sounded a bit too over the top. Brad and Bobby (Fabian and Mick) were asked to tone down their accents since they’re (I believe) more Northern and so less of the “traditional” British accent. So honestly idk
#I’m also not an expert on accents so I could be full of sh*t#but yeah that’s my take#house of anubis#tess answers#ask

Hello there! I have a few questions about the paraverse
firstly how do new narrators get there? Do they just get teleported there like in hfjOne hehe or is there a transport of some kind?
also does the paraverse have any kind of structures or different landscapes or is it just a white void? can they influence the landscape in any way or are build permissions off?
Lastly is there any logic to it all or is it just british chaos
sorry if it’s a lot of questions, I’m just so curious about this type of stuff
as MUCH as I would love to answer these questions in fine, excruciating detail, there's not necessarily a set location in which the Paraverse itself takes place. the Paraverse is both- the fun title for the community / " multiverse " of parable designs & AUs to come together for fun shenanigans, AS WELL as the name of a big fat excuse for us all to interact. AS SUCH, the Paraverse can happen wherever you, the artists, want it to!
maybe they all gather in an expansive white void, maybe they gather in the nearest coffee shop, or in a BIGGER rendition of The Stanley Parable office, it's honestly wherever you want it to be or whatever fits best for the interactions you'd like to have!
there's no official structures or any rules to this sort of thing, bear in mind, because it's more of just a moldable idea than anything else, so have fun with it!
& as for HOW they get there? also up to you! i've always left it ambiguous myself, although the idea was discussed once that thierry has customized doorways in his game to invade other, specific people's games / worlds ( i think he had something of a scary ass crawlspace to get through to get to CYM-K's parable rendition, once upon a time & another / just a flight of stairs down to get to the set of title_pending, ), or OTHERWISE just walked in a very specific direction in the void & ended up on The Other Side. OR a glitch in the system happened & oops! thierry's somewhere else now.
it's ALL whatever you make of it really! so hey, if YOU want your parable to get ONE'd into the system, GO for it, you totally not secretly a shattered oil lamp mastermind you!
#anonymous#inbox#TSP blogging#Paraverse#coming to me like i'm the paraverse expert. straightens bowtie#THANK YOU THOUGH I LOVE BEING THE FANDOM LOREKEEPER OR SOMETHING HEHE#also tldr it really IS just british chaos. unless your cast is Not British which also happens sometimes#i know one narrator that just went straight into a beetlejuice new yorker / brooklyn accent#strawberri if you're reading this i am pointing at YOU

Hello... pardon me. Excuse my interruption. Can I ask you something? Do you know of VOCALOID? If so, can I show you a site I am working on? It is a wiki.
Oh, hello! I checked your blog and saw that you were working on an english translation for Moegirlpedia? I don't know much about Vocaloid myself, much less wikis and how to edit them, but I wish you good luck! ouo

maggie devotes sm time to the relationship between adam's accent and gansey's accent and even comments on blue's accent but then never says a single thing abt known irish patriot ronan lynch possibly having one???? what's up with that
#not that I think ronan would have a full Irish accent#but he mentions Niall's northern Irish accent#and if aurora is a copy of mor who is also Irish then it's very possible she would also have her accent#so it would make sense for him to have at least a hint of it escpecially the way he grew up spending so much time with them#right??? idk I'm not an accent expert but I do know that I have a touch of an appalachian accent despite having never lived there bc#it's where my gma and her family are from and I literally didn't know abt it until my ex who was a linguist took an interest in it#other than the fact I used to say warsh instead of wash and my male best friend in highschool was always like girl STOP IT WITH THE WARSH#lmao so I haven't said it like that in years but it makes sense to me that ronan growing up w 2 fully accented parents would have even more#hints of their accents#and also he's from Virginia so??? possible affect from that as well?? idk what does he SOUND LIKE MAGGIE#sorry for the rambling in the tags lmao#the raven cycle#ronan lynch#niall lynch
