#abused gamer syndrome

okay so the way I've heard it "murderhobo" means something subtly different- it means specifically "a person who plays D&D like an utter sociopath." a murderhobo tries to kill everything they come across (including friendly or ambiguously friendly NPCs) and loot/steal from every building. they ignore any attempt at the other players to RP. they ignore any plot hooks the DM might seed, especially if they're about helping people. they're just here to cause chaos, kill things, and get loot.

There are lots of reasons why someone might play a murderhobo, ranging from "I have misunderstood how the game is going to go and am treating an intrigue-filled RP-heavy table like a dungeon crawl table" to "I think cRaZy characters are interesting and want to play one." but honestly? real talk?

Usually if more than one person in your group is playing a murderhobo*- or an Old Man Henderson, or a Spoony Bard, or any other kind of one-note character who derails the game- the DM has screwed up. the number one cause of murderhobo behaviour is shitty DMing, either in the player's past or at the current table.

If a player ignores everything the DM's built and just tries to kill things (or fuck things) and cause mayhem, it is usually because they feel like their choices don't matter. they feel like no matter what they do, they are gonna get railroaded. and they're engaging with the game mechanics they feel like the DM isn't letting them engage with.

you know how in a video game that talks at you for a million years and gives you choices that don't really matter, you mash buttons to get through all the boring cutscenes and get to the good stuff? if your players can't make meaningful choices, they mash buttons.

there are things a DM can, and needs, to do to combat this. the most important one is Session Zero- sitting down with your players and making sure everyone is on the same page about what the game is about, what everyone wants to do, what kind of story you're telling, and what kinds of things are and aren't acceptable at the table.

(for example, during my Session Zeroes, I always tell players that I am okay with them splitting the party. Most DMs aren't, so this is an expectation you need to communicate!)

you need to foster choice from minute 1 of your game. if you don't, at best you are going to get shitty murderhobo/fuckboy bard/game derailing behaviour. at worst- you're going to get Abused Gamer Syndrome, where your players refuse to make choices and go along with what they think you want them to do.

the OP of this post is, ironically, committing the classic leftist sin of blaming individual people stuck in a power dynamic gone bad for that power dynamic. of course a player is going to want to kill everything that moves if they don't feel like they have another way to engage with the game! they're mashing buttons to get to the part of the game where they can do something interesting! * assuming you're NOT running a dungeon crawl where this kind of behaviour IS the game, anyway.

Just thinking about how much the “ witcher gamer” community would HATE Ciri if there was a game with a book accurate version of her, she’s queer, shes fierce, wild and arrogant but becomes ruthless and a murder gremlin due to all her trauma, shes not traditionally attractive, has a huge disfiguring scar on her face

And she is the main character, even if she’s not the player character the entire narrative revolves around her

Oh yeah, it’s a thing on Reddit/FB groups where people often ask if Ciri is “sociopathic”/“psychopathic” or surprised that they find her very unlikable after reading the books, which is always kind of funny to me.

Throughout the series there’s a definite theme of girls/young women who experience a severe trauma and then fall into a hateful cycle, and only sometimes having a redemptive moment of realisation that they’re perpetuating the same cycle that enacted violence of them. I also think that this sometimes makes people extremely uncomfortable, because they really do fall far while in this cycle - Falka!Ciri is vicious and filled with hate and enraged. She’s traumatised, lost her childhood and has become a product of the awful things happening to and around her.

Even past that point in her story, people tend to give feedback that she’s bratty or overconfident or annoying and honestly. The entire series is from the ages of about 8-17 (I may be off by a few years here btw!!) for Ciri. Her entire formative years are marked by horrible and traumatising events. I think a lot of people fall into the idea of “good victims” - people who go through trauma and come out kind and sweet and helpful and that their experiences made them ultimately a better person. Which realistically…is not the case for most people.

I’ve also seen Reddit argue a lot that Ciri isn’t actually a bisexual/queer woman, based on the fact that her relationship with Mistle is abusive and often reads like Stockholm Syndrome. I don’t think Sapkowski has ever officially labelled her sexuality and has left it open to interpretation. For me, this feeds back into the points earlier: Ciri is heavily traumatised and she’s also extremely young when all of this is happening, so I can somewhat agree that a definitive read on her sexuality could be hard. However, despite the fact their relationship is extremely fucked up, Ciri does clearly develop feelings for Mistle, and actively mourns her as a lover and partner. Regardless of the start of that relationship, I think it’s naive to say that Ciri didn’t have very real feelings for her?

Also yeah, I can’t ever see Ciri being what is considered “traditionally” attractive. The scar across her face repeatedly is linked to being a giant ugly symbol of the loss of her innocence and childhood, and considering the timeline of care it receives, I don’t ever see it being a small thing even as she gets older. She also spends again, a considerable amount of her youth on the run, under extreme stress and in undesirable conditions, which isn’t exactly conducive to what most people consider attractiveness. Additionally, considering how she’s reduced repeatedly to a sexual object and objectified, I really can’t see Ciri running around with her chest out as per games.

Ciri is honestly such a fascinating and complex character and I do think it’s sad that you can’t really get all of that from the games due to the perspective + difficulties in portraying that through the given platform. I do always hope that more people read the books for Ciri alone, because I’m always excited for content that fleshes her out with that level of development ❤️

I have! When I first started writing DRU last summer, I wasn't sure how to begin the story. Riddle and Cater weren't planned to be in the fic, as it was mainly a story focused on the trio and the reader. In the early version of the story, Idia was intended to play a role in the plot. I had very basic ideas in mind, but none of them were satisfying enough.

In the midst of my agonizing over where to start, I found an unfinished wip titled "Mimicry," in which you're stalked while you work at an old-fashioned diner with Riddle and Cater. The very first diner scene you read in DRU is actually taken from that wip! I was reading it again and I liked the aesthetic of The Devil's Delight so much that I thought to add it into DRU along with Riddle and Cater. I'm very happy I did because from there the story took such a lively shape!

As for the surprise question, there are quite a few unfinished twst wips I have that I'm not sure if I'll ever return to. There aren't any reasons for why they're unfinished. Although maybe it's because I'm not sure if anyone would find these plots interesting. >_< I'll list some of them below.

the devil and his halo -> it was a story in which you escape an abusive relationship only to meet Jade, and he offers you stay with him in the meantime. He's so creepy and you think he's living a double life of some sort, and after a week you think anywhere would be better than here. But Jade won't let you leave.

npc syndrome -> a story in which Idia traps you in a virtual world and you have to find a way out within a certain timeframe otherwise you'll be his forever.

grim reaping -> less of a yandere story and more of a romantic comedy, in which Grim Reaper Idia is summoning for his favorite character in a game just as you appear before him without warning and meaning. Sadly, he loses his 50/50 in the game and now he's stuck with you, a recently deceased mortal who is begging for a second chance at life. Idia tells you that second chances aren't freely given; they're earned. In order to do that, you have to accumulate enough soul points to be worthy of reincarnation. This is done by doing good deeds to ease the weight of the burdens from your previous life on your soul, which have followed you into the afterlife and have made it impossible for you to settle. Idia hates to be bothered with work and wants nothing more than to be rid of you, so he agrees to take you under his wing and help you get the amount of points needed so you can have your second chance...and so he can return to being a gamer.

monops's reflection -> I wrote half of it and stopped because I hit a writing block for that story. Looking back, I realize the concept of "Jade wanting what Floyd has" is similar to The Most Dangerous Game and so I don't think that story will ever be posted because it follows a similar concept. ^^;;;

moray pit -> this was somewhat of an obscure horror concept I had in which a small pool appears in a shallow cove one day. It looks shallow from the surface, but it goes rather deep and is a tight space that the average human can't quite venture in without getting stuck. People in your small town have started referring to it as a wishing well because if you bring an offering to the pool and drop it in it's said that what you desire most will appear. However, you must never stick your hands into the pool and try to pull up what dwells within. The last person who did that was dragged in and never seen again. But that's just a myth meant to scare people away. Or so you think until the area is roped off and put under investigation after too many souls have disappeared. Foolishly, you accept the dare from a few of your friends and stick your hand into the tiny pool, disobeying all the posted warnings. Some say your fingers will grasp seaweed, others claim the smooth weathering of gold coins. Maybe you'll feel skeletal fingers reaching for yours or a smooth tentacle curling around your wrist in greeting. In your case, you put your hand down there, feel a face that is not quite human, and for a moment all is calm. Until your finger is bitten clean off. :) that should have driven you away for good, but oddly enough you can't ignore the alluring tug the moray pit has on you.

it sounds waaaaayyyy funnier than it actually is, and its a big multi chapter one. at first it was just "what if jaydick breastfeeding kink" but it ended up veering into dark fic pretty much immediately. content warning: domestic abuse, grooming, forced miscarriage, probably other stuff. idk man, this ones nasty

starts out as brudick (very stockholm syndrome-y) but transitions it jaydick (codependent and weird. sibling, mother-puppy, generally unhealthy but in a mutually destructive way as opposed to just being abusive like brudick is in this) and i think (?) ends in a sort of. very traumatized household. idk i think killing everyone off might be easier than making them cope or whatever.

Call me Crow. I'm 31 y/o, nonbinary, pansexual, and my pronouns are they/them. I'm married and we have two dogs, one cat, a parrot, and twenty-four chickens (I post about all of them a lot so you'll probably get to know them well if you follow my blog.) We live on a 2 acre homestead in southern Appalachia. I practice conjure and rootwork that was taught to me by family and neighbors growing up. I love to forage and make my own herbal salves and tinctures, as well as canned items like preserves and jellies. My partner and I are also professional portrait and event photographers, and I love posting our work whenever I get the chance.

My favorite band is Coheed and Cambria, with Sleep Token and Ghost following closely behind. I'm an old school emo kid, and I also listen to a lot of pop-punk, numetal, and post-hardcore. I also dive into j-rock and SOME Appalachian gothic, neotraditional country, bluegrass, and folk music. My tastes are a little all over the place and if it sounds good I'll probably like it.

I am a gamer, and my favorite game is a tie between Bloodborne and Pathologic 2. I have also been playing Destiny 2 since the launch of Destiny 1 in 2014, and I fall in and out of love with it every few weeks. Depends on what the content is giving me at that time. I also really like Minecraft and other comfy games like Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing. I'm a huge fan of horror games and I especially love the ones with deep and interesting lore and worldbuilding.

I'm a writer, and have been actively doing so since I was 11 years old. I haven't published anything, as it's more of a hobby for me than anything (plus imposter syndrome sucks). I have a world building project/RP that I've had going with a friend of mine for almost a decade now. I love thinking of/writing new characters and short stories. I used to write fanfiction but I'm not consistent enough to post multiple-part fics anymore, and my schedule doesn't leave much time for that sort of devotion. So, for now, it's just a hobby I get to enjoy with a few select friends.

I'm really into creepy content. Cryptids, cosmic horror, ARGs, analog horror, and the occult. I've seen a lot of what there is to offer on YouTube, so I'm always open to suggestions on stuff that I may not have heard of. I also like to collect bones, antlers, and other oddities.

I'm a big reader, and I'm currently doing a 52 week book challenge for 2025. I usually read 2-3 books at a time for when my ADD says I need something different.

I am also autistic and was diagnosed as an adult (age 27). I also have relapsing/remitting MS; it affects my short term memory, vision, and balance, primarily. I also sometimes have some other cognitive issues (forgetting/flubbing words, names, etc.) I am on treatment for a few of the symptoms, but it does impact my daily life.

I think a lot of this comes down to the misconception that a ttrpg needs the DM to concoct an epic, pre-planned story. This entry from The Alexandrian about "abused gamer syndrome" explains it better than I could.

Division/hostility between player and DM comes from railroading and denial of player agency, so the player starts acting out to claw some of that agency back which is inevitably going to drive a wedge between player and DM.

And I really think new DMs are set up for failure in this regard, because if you're getting into the hobby (likely with 5e) because of a big name actual play (or even just by looking at the prevailing expectations present in a lot of 5e culture) then it's going to be really easy for you to make the mistake that you need a fancy, pre-planned narrative, and inadvertently fall into the railroading trap and creating that divide because of it.

There's this way of talking about tabletop games that just seems to imagine DMs as someone who isn't playing a game with their friends who they know and like and I don't get it. Are people hiring DMs in enough numbers that this is normal?

Or is the community just so brainrotted the fundamental relationship between players and dms has to be what, aersolised

Books I Read in 2023

#81 - Role Playing, by Cathy Yardley

Rating: 5/5 stars

Did the author write this specifically for me? I feel like she did. (I know she didn't.)

As a lifelong gamer, I get so tired of books in any genre getting gaming wrong by a) stereotyping gamer characters in any one of a dozen derogatory ways; b) clearly not having the first clue about what playing a video game, any video game, is actually like; c) ignoring, downplaying, or simply not even being aware of the misogyny women often face in the gaming community; and/or d) assuming anyone over the age of 25 who "still" plays video games is a complete loser.

Role Playing did none of these things, instead showing us adults who enjoy gaming as a hobby, who find friendship and society within gaming, and who aren't ashamed of being gamers.

Bonus for me, I also loved Jujutsu Kaisen and Arcane, and I don't mind the properties being name-dropped, because this isn't Ready Player One that did the name-dropping constantly because, hey, remember all these geek-cred things you liked in the 80s? 'member? 'member? I feel like the references here are for flavor, not to be a tentpole of the book's entire identity, because gaming is the focus, not animated shows. (I'm not going to get into the "is Arcane anime" debate here, that's not relevant.)

If I sound defensive on the subject of gaming, well, yes, I am. I played World of Warcraft for almost a decade and was a serious raider for about six of those years. My new loves Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail (because even games with microtransactions can still be less abusive than MMORPGs, there's a good reason I finally broke up with WoW.) I'm looking forward to trying Balder's Gate 3 when I can make a little more time for it, because my husband and my DnD group chat friends are all playing and I have to stay out of the chat now so I'm not constantly spoiled for everything.

I am a gamer, and I've spent a good chunk of my life being told I'm too old to enjoy what I enjoy, it's too cringe, I'm a loser, get a life, etc. etc.

This book says "hey look at these NERDS who are awesome and deserve LOVE AND HAPPINESS."

Because there is also an incredibly sweet romance, with two people who in some senses know who they are (Aiden is very much a caregiver and Maggie a charmingly ornery woman who takes no shit) but in other senses are still figuring themselves out (Aiden's demi revelation, Maggie's struggle to find purpose beyond her sudden case of empty-nest syndrome.)

Do you know how rare it is to find anything that depicts adult gamers as functional people with rich inner lives? Because I do. This is it, and I want more of it.

(My quibbles with the book are minor, and aren't serious enough to me to downgrade the rating by a star: Aiden and Maggie having the big, serious talk about his orientation came across as a little bit "internet therapy speak," and it would have been nice if nearly every female character aside from Maggie weren't awful people, because female friendships are often lacking in romance. I do understand why the plot warranted it here--Maggie is practically a recluse and Aiden's mother's machinations to get him married off involve women who are social vampires--but we could have spent a little more time on the two long-distance female friends/family Maggie has, as positive forces to counterbalance the unrelenting awfulness of Deb and Sheryl.)

Okay, so there isn't good art available of *everybody* yet, but I think you should all have a little somethin'-somethin' about Matthew's class. So... there's 12 kids you need to know!

1: MATTHEW I. BOSTON -- Our protagonist! Physically disabled, even though you can't see it. Often thought of as weak. He is artsy, imaginative, sensitive, and holds a great love for life itself. Wants to leave Special Ed in pursuit of a better life, due to the abuse that many of its staff dish out.

2: ANDREA Z. BELTRAN -- Matthew's best friend! Has Dyslexia & Conduct Disorder. Seen as a "lost cause" by most. She's a bit explosive, but there's more to her than that. Andrea is old-fashioned, cynical, surprisingly caring & MUCH smarter than she's given credit for. Tends to bully their bullies.

3: MATEO-RUDOLFO ("RUDY") N. DELACRUZ -- HoH (Hard-of-Hearing) boy who's known for selling all sorts of knickknacks-- snacks, fidget toys, etc.-- to his peers. Tends to hide his hearing aids under his long hair. Allegedly crushing on Aza. Doesn't talk much, not even with ASL. But his close friends know him to be serious, organized, a little uptight, & very stubborn... with a few silly or mischievous moments here and there. >:)

4: OLIVER K. HANES -- "Frenemies" with Matthew. Dysgraphic, Dyspraxic, + some other probably-undiagnosed neurodivergence. Is ALL about tech + social media-- even filming his own vlogs, skits & pranks! Oliver is very conceited, boastful, self-centered, impulsive, and a spoiled rich boy... but not at all shallow. Will always put others first when it matters the most. Close with Jack.

5: KARL HO -- One of Rudy's friends! Has Down Syndrome + Intellectual Disability. Is often babied & lowkey excluded by others... despite being (secretly) VERY perceptive. Known to be sociable, silly, messy, & chill. Absolute gamer. Loves cartoons. Always ready to talk about girls. Sometimes makes bad choices in the name of being included, like laughing along when other kids bully Matthew.

6: AZA A. KANAAN -- Disliked by Matthew, dislikes him right back. Loved by literally everyone else. Levi's "Right-Hand Man." Aza is an ADHDer, leaning way on the hyperactive side of things. Aza is rowdy, random, & LOVES immature, vulgar shock humor. Plus anything clowncore or neon. But somehow, those closest to her claim she's also the mom friend, very loyal, open-minded, and down-to-Earth. Matthew won't believe it till he sees it.

7: JACKSON ("JACK") J. MARINE -- Matthew's #1 bully since forever! Jack speaks with a very prominent stutter, which made him a bullying target. Started various sports outside of school, as well as Karate. Thus, Jack is now tough, mean, & the strongest of the boys. Uses that status to hold himself above others. Will ALWAYS take an oppurtunity to torment Matthew for some laughs. Still only has 1 real friend. (Oliver.)

8: AMELIA MILLER -- Matthew's 2nd favorite girl! Was born with one arm. Doesn't know if she's been diagnosed with anything else. Amelia is very bubbly & soft-hearted. She loves llamas, hanging out with friends, sweets, coffee, cute boys, and pretty much anything girly. More sheltered than other kids. Doesn't have much of a backbone. Seems to fear abandonment. Usually seen with Levi & Aza.

9: WILBUR B. MORA -- Matthew's now-distant family friend. Only has one working eye, which is slowly but surely losing vision anyway due to Retinitis Pigmentosa. Wilbur is a calm, collected & peaceful math / science nerd. He especially loves animals, and can & WILL remind the teacher about the homework. Introverted, but not shy. Feels VERY held-back by Special Ed academically & tends to overwork himself at other programs, trying to fill the void.

10: AARAN PATEL -- Rudy & Karl's 3rd friend! Aaran has Tourette's, which makes him a bullying target. Not only that, Aaran's also a little awkward & VERY spiritual. He's super into Tarot cards, zodiac signs, fortune-telling, third eyes, religions, etc. And all of those factors tend to weird people out. So most don't talk to him. And they're missing out; because he's excitable, easily-impressed, and always has PLENTY to say! He also has a bit of a random fascination with superheroes & the idea of magic. Never a dull moment with this one.

11: LEVI T. TRAINOR-FANG -- Matthew's #2 bully! Claims to be his best friend despite hating him. Levi never discloses what she has, but she has implied that it's an emotion thing. Levi is an edgy, dark-minded, and cut-throat Queen-bee. Like Regina George mixed with a scene kid. Starts drama for fun & feels little remorse. While she & Jack both have the most fun tormenting Matthew as they find him to be weak & a crybaby, Levi will go after almost anyone. Her other victims include Andrea, Rudy, Amelia, Aaran, Linus, and even Jack himself. Almost everyone is terrified of her. Seems to respect Aza.

12: LINUS S. TRAINOR-FANG -- Levi's twin brother & the most disliked kid in the room! He has ADHD (Inattentive type this time!) along with Epilepsy. Linus is a gloomy yet chatty emo boy who loves writing, music, dance, & spiders. Unfortunately, he's also pretentious + overbearingly desperate to be cool. Instead of being himself or seeing others as people, he makes every trend his personality, puts people on pedestals they don't want, & refuses to talk to other "unpopular" kids like Matthew or Andrea in public. Only to be called cringe by the cool kids anyway! It's a vicious cycle that he refuses to break... and Matthew is lowkey kind of concerned.

Phew, that's a lot! It... gets easier to keep track once you see their designs, I promise, lol.

When you said Ron Edwards had the gift of apollo, in the context of D&D being brainrot, what did you mean? And/or what prophecy did he deliver?

This is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the way Ron Edwards wrote about trad games and the play culture around them. The thrust of his argument was that the habits of play that were taught by playing in the trad games of the time - basically the expectation that you'd be horribly railroaded and responses to that - stuck with players when they moved to other games. So if you played in dysfunctional games, the habits of play you'd pick up would stick with you and damage your ability to enjoy other games, and sometimes narratives more broadly, and were extremely hard to unlearn. Unfortunately, Ron Edwards was not a man prone to tact, so the way he phrased this was 'playing RPGs wrong gives you irreparable brain damage'. This has gone down as one of the most batshit statements in the general field of ttrpg theory.

So, the joke is that while it wasn't true at the time when Ron Edwards said it, the state of play-culture around dnd5e is so bad that he is retroactively being proved right.
