I think a lot of able bodied ppl don't feel comfortable portraying disabled characters either because they're afraid of doing something wrong (valid but. Hey if it comes across as insensitive you can always adjust that's better than erasing it completely) or just because they're that subtle ableist where disabled people make them deeply uncomfortable and they don't wanna look at them. Or they like, want to make the character better so obviously you take away what's "wrong" with them right?

Idk, it's weird because how many AUs do you see where a character with glasses just...suddenly doesn't wear glasses anymore? Same principal just "less extreme" than "oh Edward's arm is actually a tattoo now" rather than giving him a non fantasy prosthetic. Idk idk. Fandom and subtle (or sometimes blatant) ableism.
