The microwave beeped, and grabbing the towel from the counter, Kihyun reached up to pull open the door. Carefully retrieving the long, flat cloth bag of sand from within, he hissed as it settled into the palm of his hand. Even through the extra layer of cloth that was supposed to protect his sensitive skin, it was hot to the touch. Well, that wouldn’t do; as eager as he was to get this in to Minhyuk, who really needed it right now, it would have to wait for a while longer. Quickly, he deposited it on the counter in front of him, poking at it with a finger every minute or so. At last, it settled to a more bearable temperature, and the main vocalist hummed in approval. Picking it up once again, he made his way to the room he shared in the dorm with Minhyuk and Hyungwon.

The first thing Kihyun saw when he walked in was the former of his two roommates, lying on his side in bed. A mixture of regret and pain contorted his face, and the main vocal bit his lip. Earlier that day, during Monsta X’s performance stage at the Fact Music Awards, Minhyuk had hurt his lower back. It was still giving him grief, even now that it had been a while and they had returned to their dorms. The thought of that broke Kihyun's heart, especially imagining the older man suffering through it as he waited for the painkillers to kick in.

When he noticed that Kihyun was there with him, Minhyuk glanced over for a second before huffing, pouting, and averting his eyes. “I told you that you didn’t have to do that for me, right? I'll be fine.”

“How are you feeling, Minnie?” the vocalist asked gently, choosing to completely ignore his friend's protests. "Has lying down helped any?"

Instead of answering right away, Minhyuk curled further into himself. His breathing stuttered with the pain of his movement. "I'm fine...I feel better. Like I wasn't hurt at all."

"Lee Minhyuk, don't lie to me." It came out a bit more harsh than Kihyun wanted, but maybe that was for the best. Minhyuk was exhausted, sulky, and wallowing in self-pity, and honestly all Kihyun wanted was to see him take care of himself. Besides, they didn't have time for any of this bullshit. “Roll onto your stomach, and let me put the heat where your pain is. We're lucky that we have a day to rest, so let's make the most of it and get you healed up."

Finally, Minhyuk relented at Kihyun's no-nonsense tone and with a groan, obeyed. As Kihyun put the hot sandbag on the small of his back, he relaxed palpably. “There we go.” The younger man smiled a bit and reached out to rub Minhyuk’s shoulders. “Soon you’ll be good as new, hm?”

“Maybe.” From one second to the next, Minhyuk’s voice had gone from its usual sassy tone to small and not so confident. He buried his face in his pillow, and then his chest began to shake with sobs, choking his words as they squeezed from his throat. "Why is it always m--me, Kihyunnie? No matter how much I just try and try, I always end up hurt and you're fine."

"It could have happened to any of us," the main vocalist sighed. Though his voice was matter-of-fact as always, he crawled up further onto the bed and laid down next to him. Taking Minhyuk’s hand and lacing their fingers together, he did his best to be reassuring. "And it's not always you. Hoseok hyung overdoes his workouts sometimes. You know, him and his shoulder. We had to perform as five in Abu Dhabi because Changkyunnie got injured, too. Oh, and remember when Hyungwon had to miss part of our American tour for The Code?"

"I guess," Minhyuk grumbled, glancing over at Kihyun and squeezing his fingers gently. His eyes were still wet, and his voice cracked again as he murmured, “Thank you, Kihyun-ah. I don’t know what I’d do if you weren’t here.”

In response, the younger just smiled. “It's the least I could do for my best friend.”

“Good, ‘cuz I better be.” There was that sunshine smile and little giggle that Kihyun had grown so fond of, and he couldn’t help but return it.

Despite the playful, loving sparkle in Minhyuk’s dark pupils, the older’s eyelids were drooping, too, and his grip on Kihyun’s hand loosened ever so slightly. It was obvious that he could no longer resist the pull of sleep and was giving in to his exhaustion. Within the minute, his breathing grew slower and he was doing his little half-awake hum. Again Kihyun reached out to see if the sandbag was still warm, which it was, and rub Minhyuk's back in slow circles. This seemed to be the thing that finally lulled the older to sleep because when Kihyun glanced over next, he was snoring peacefully.

Another rush of fondness consumed the main vocal. Minhyuk could be loud sometimes, but he was also so cute, often in the most candid of ways. Gently placing the older's hand by his head, in a position it often was when he slept, Kihyun bent down to plant a gentle kiss on his temple.

Four months later.

Los Angeles was always so big and lively, and Kihyun loved it. This definitely wasn’t his first trip to the city, but it never failed to fill him with a childlike wonder and excitement. He leaned close to the airplane window to catch glimpses of the skyline as they flew in, and insisted on a window seat in the car on the way to their hotel so he could look at it from below, too. Of course, he was also super pumped for their concert, but there was still a little while before that. For now, he was just enthralled with the bright, bustling metropolis.

Time always seemed to pass more quickly in the states, however. Maybe it was the rush of the schedules or the relative unfamiliarity of everything. Yet, before any of them really knew it, they were walking out of their last rehearsal at the Staples Center. In only about twenty-four hours, they would be on stage, in front of tens of thousands of Monbebes, starting their final American World Tour performance. It had been a dream of theirs for so long, one that had seemed impossible four years ago, but now they were here. It was real.

Because they had no other place to be until the morning, everyone had a little free time to do whatever they wanted. Though it was late at night, and Kihyun felt exhausted, he took this opportunity by the horns. Once they were back at their hotel, he almost immediately accosted Minhyuk with a big smile on his face, begging him to come along and explore with him. Of course, the older said yes, and the two of them set off.

Kihyun and Minhyuk easily got sucked into the night lights of Los Angeles, and it made them both high, in a strange way, on its allure. As they picked their way along the streets to Koreatown, they laughed and talked like true tourists. Despite how far it was to their destination, the food that awaited them there was worth it. They’d been here the year before and enjoyed it so much that they wanted to do it again. Minhyuk shelled out some cash for what was practically a feast of street food. After thanking the nice lady who owned the cart, they went to a nearby bench to eat.

Their conversation was rapid-fire, with plenty of joking and smiles. It felt like they were in their own little world as the people and time flowed around them. Among other things, they discussed how big their venue was, a drama Minhyuk was watching and that Kihyun had watched in the past, and when they would do their next cook cook. They often poked fun at each other on and off camera, but it was all in fun, and an essential part of their friendship, which had only grown stronger since debut.

Before long, the food was gone, their bellies were full, and after throwing their trash away, they set off for the hotel again, walking side by side. By now, Kihyun was all but used to having to quicken his strides to match his best friend’s, and so it was nothing at all.

Well--at least, until suddenly the pain in Kihyun's side that he’d tried to push out of his head for the last two or so weeks flared up with a vengeance. The moment it did, his head got light and foggy, and he slumped forward. He thought he would come crashing to the hard pavement, but then a warm, slender body was there to catch him. A panicked Kihyun-ah!-- came to his ears from somewhere far away. He was faintly aware of being half-pulled, half-carried sideways. Gentle but shaking hands guided him down to sit on the sidewalk. Now there was a brick wall against his back, and he let his head loll against it.

As Kihyun’s vision cleared, Minhyuk’s face floated into sight again; the older boy’s brows were knit together with concern. He had Ki’s small hand in his large ones and was holding it tightly, like a lifeline. An unwanted blush crept across Kihyun’s cheeks and he averted his eyes as he pulled himself together.

“Are you okay, Kihyun-ah?” Minhyukie’s voice was gentle, even though he was obviously trying and failing to keep the concern out of it. “What’s wrong?”

“It’s nothing, Min...I’m fine. Just a little bit of--of pain, that’s all.”

“To steal a line that you used on me once, Yoo Kihyun, don’t lie to me.” The younger man knew he was right and nearly crumpled then and there. His eyes brimmed with tears as he bit his lip and lifted his hand to his side. Another warm touch joined it a couple of seconds later, and the older boy asked, earnestly, “I noticed that you wince in choreo rehearsals. Is this why?”

“Yeah...it’s been there for a while and g-got really bad all of a sudden just now. I’ve been trying to ignore it…”

“You should have told us.”

Nobody could argue with Minhyuk in this moment; there was no trace of humor in his tone, only seriousness. He clicked his tongue, and when Kihyun glanced back over, a slight frown tinged his lips. Loving concern flashed behind the visual’s eyes, but he also looked a little flabbergasted and terrified. At this Kihyun felt himself shiver. A hot, wet drop slipped down his face, and he protested, “But I can’t afford to slow down, Minhyuk-ah. I can’t. The tour is so important to us and I don’t want to let you guys down, or let Monbebes down…”

“You need to put your own health first, though. Yes, Monbebes will miss you on a concert date and we will miss you too, but you shouldn’t risk your health in the future for doing things in the present.”

Kihyun shook his head. “I know, but we only have one American concert left...and I’ve never missed a stage in our four years as Monsta X.”

There was silence for a long moment as Minhyuk mulled this over in his head. He clenched his jaw and relaxed it a few times before finally continuing slowly, “Would you at least go to the hospital and get checked out? I'll be with you the whole time, I promise.”

As much as Kihyun didn’t like that idea, he couldn’t deny that he owed Minhyukie that. Also, his conscience nagged at him, and so he nodded a little.

“Alright, well...do you think you can walk the rest of the way back?”

“Yeah.”

The ghost of a smile returned to his Minhyuk’s face, and climbing to his feet, he reached out to help his friend up. A flash of gratitude went through Kihyun when he realized that the older man had offered his off-hand so Kihyun wouldn't have to use the arm on his wounded side as much. He pulled himself up, doing his best to not make his pain worse. Then, with their hands clasped, fingers intertwined, he and Minhyuk made their way to the hotel at a slower pace.

Minhyuk kept his word faithfully. He was the one who knocked on their manager's door and explained the situation; as they climbed into the car and drove to the hospital, he was still right at Kihyun's side. The gentle pressure of their interlaced fingers kept the younger man grounded the whole way. His eyes welled up with tears as the nurse who admitted them to the emergency room ran her fingers over the giant black, yellow, and purple bruise on Kihyun’s side. He'd been hiding it, so it was strange to let someone else see, but his best friend's presence made things better. During the X-ray, Minhyuk couldn’t be in the room, but he promised Kihyun he’d be sitting right outside. Almost the moment the main vocal emerged, he was back by the bedside, and their hands found each others' again. To anyone else, these might seem like little things, but for Kihyun, it was everything. He was nervous about being in the hospital anyway; having someone by his side that was as close as a brother was a Godsend.

Sitting in the emergency room cubicle, waiting for the diagnosis, Kihyun sighed and bit the inside of his cheek. “I’m nervous.”

“I know.” One of Minhyuk’s signature smiles spread across his face, and he set a hand on Kihyun’s thigh. “You’re okay. It'll turn out alright, you'll see.”

A tight, breathless feeling overwhelmed Kihyun as he looked at his best friend, and all at once, hot tears were threatening to fall. He didn’t think he’d ever been more thankful for something than he was for that sunny grin at that moment. “Thank you, Minhyuk-ah.”

“Anything for my best friend.”

If Kihyun had been in better condition, he would have reached out and smacked the older boy. “Oh, shut up," he giggled; it hurt a little, but he could bear the pain.

“I’m serious though.” Despite Min’s sparkling eyes, it was obvious that again, he was telling the truth. "You're one of my closest friends, Kihyun, and don't ever forget it, okay?"

Just then, the doctor and their manager entered, and attention shifted to the former as he began to speak. The three Koreans in the room weren't fluent in English, but they had no trouble understanding what the man in the white coat was saying. The x-rays showed clearly that Kihyun had a fractured rib. The idea was terrifying, but it totally explained the pain he had been experiencing. "You're lucky that you didn't make it worse especially considering you put strain on your body on a frequent basis. Not to mention, there's the added stress of not being at home. Right now, the thing you need most is rest."

Of course, when the physician inquired if they had any questions, Kihyun had to ask about the concert. He wanted to take part no matter what. Even though the doctor cautioned that it would be best if he didn’t and took it easy, that fire of determination still burned brightly within him. This was a longtime dream, and there was no way in hell he was missing it. Someone would have to tie him up or down to keep him from going on that stage. They would have a hell of a fight on their hands, too.

From the way Minhyuk reached up to squeeze Kihyun's knee, the older boy also must have known what was going through his head. He was familiar with the main vocalist's stubborn nature, so Kihyun wasn't all too shocked at that. The slight frown on Min's face also revealed that he probably had a few choice words to say about it too. However, he kept quiet, maybe waiting for a more opportune time.

Because the hospital staff didn’t think it was necessary for them to stay overnight, in the end they found themselves back at the hotel. On the way, they picked up a prescription for some strong painkillers. Kihyun was already plotting how they would be his saving grace at the concert. That thought could wait until later, though. For now, he focused on keeping his heavy eyelids open long enough to get himself to bed. Minhyuk, as always, was right by his side the whole time, keeping a close eye out for him as he did his nightly skincare routine.

Finally, Kihyun was snuggling under the thick duvet of the hotel bed. He expected Minhyuk to say his goodnights and duck out to get some rest too. Instead, he was pleasantly surprised when the mattress dipped with the weight of the other boy sitting on its edge. A gentle caress brushed the hair out of Kihyun's face, and one last time, he dragged his eyes open to see his friend sitting there, smiling softly. "Thank you again," Kihyun murmured, "For everything."

In response, Min nodded wordlessly and leaned over to place a gentle kiss on Kihyun's forehead. It was warm and soft and nice, and the vocalist drifted off into sleep with it imprinted on his memory, as well as the gentle pressure of a large palm rubbing his back.

Faisal Mosque, Islamabad, Pakistan 🇵🇰! The Faisal Mosque is a mosque located in Islamabad, Pakistan. Faisal Mosque was the largest mosque in the world from 1986 until 1993 when it was overtaken by the mosques in Saudi Arabia. Episode 3 : visite du pays

Jour 10(suite): Le gamin m'a mit un coup de machette sur la main, heureusement qu'il n'a pas beaucoup de force et qu'elle ne coupe pas bien. Maman 2 dents a fait un genre de crèpes, une tuerie!!

Jour 11: Journée très chaude et hard. On a commencé la 1ere petite maison avec 2 mecs (couper des poutres à partir de troncs, monter la charpente et le toit). J'en ai chié comme on dit^^ Pour une fois j'étais content d'avoir de la pluie vers 16h. La famille d'anglais est arrivée, ils ont l'air super cools et ... ils parlent français!! Ils ont habités Morzine pendant 17ans. 5 enfants dans la maison, ça va être le bordel haha. Invasion de fourmis volantes à la tombée de la nuit, c'est dingue! Fuck j'ai marché sur mes lunettes ...

Jour 12: On a coulé la dalle de béton pour la petite maison, grosse journée avec beaucoup de pluie. Mais c'était sympa avec le père anglais. Par contre il parle déjà d'écourter leur voyage... Il n'y a plus d'eau à la maison, j'ai été me laver à la rivière, ça fait du bien!

Jour 13: J'ai mal partout haha mais aujourd'hui c'est repos! Les anglais ont décidé largement raccourir leur passage ici, ils partent demain ... dommage. Ce matin longue marche de 4h avec la famille et les anglais, c'était hyper beau mais il fait beaucoup trop chaud (32°). On a raccompagné les parents d'Umanga jusqu'au bus. A la fin de la marche j'ai dit à Umanga "je rêve d'une bonne glace", 1h après elle est revenue avec de la glace... ils sont dingues!

Jour 14: Les anglais partent ce matin, c'est dommage mais au moins ça sera plus calme le matin haha Pour finir, je les ai accompagné jusqu'à Midigama, dans le sud de l'île. 6h30 de minibus. Je vais passer la nuit dans la pension où ils sont et comme ça je vais pouvoir visiter Galle et remonter en train jusqu'à Colombo, le père anglais m'a dit que c'est super beau. Et mardi matin j'irai faire revalider mon visa pour les 2 mois restants. On a été à la plage ce soir, ça change, c'est top! Je comprends mieux pourquoi ils ont pas kiffés la ferme, c'est 5 étoiles ici. Salle de bain privative, chef à disposition, plage à 100m...

Jour 15: Levé 6h pour prendre le train pour Galle. Arrivé à Galle, je commence par 2h de marche, visite de temple, d'église, marche sur la plage. Le père anglais m'a conseillé d'aller visiter le fort, j'ai décidé de le faire en tuk tuk. Visite du fort, d'un vieu musée, d'une ferme de tortues, d'une fabrique de statues en bois, d'un jardin et du musée du tsunami. Go pour 2h30 de train (dont 1h30 debout), une fois à Colombo je me balade pendant une heure. Le quartier riche est beau mais le reste bof, tout est en travaux/construction (construction d'énormes buildings et extension de l'île un peu comme à Abu Dhabi) Ensuite tuk tuk pour le quartier du bureau d'immigration, le père anglais m'a conseillé de reserver une chambre sur booking.com En route, le tuk tuk tombe en panne, il me dit de monter dans un autre et c'est reparti. Arrivé à l'adresse, aucune trace de la pension.. on a tourné pendant quasiment 1h, personne ne connait l'adresse. Du coup go dans un hotel pas loin, mytheux... J'adore le Sri Lanka haha Il fait 12000 ° dans la chambre. Point positif, le repas est pas cher et plutôt bon, une énorme assiette de riz avec des légumes et du poulet. Et pas épicé pour une fois^^

Jour 16: Impossible de dormir, il faisait trop chaud. Go au bureau de l'immigration et je rentre! Le mec de l'hotel m'indique vite fait où c'est et, coup de chance ou pas(pour une fois!) je trouve du premier coup!!! Youhou je suis le 1er! Bon en même temps j'ai 1h d'avance haha. Pouhaaaa c'est super long, 3h pour un tampon sur le passeport ^^ Par contre j'ai payé beaucoup moins cher que je pensais (pour une fois). C'est bon, j'ai mon visa! 15 centimes le bus, ça change des 10€ en tuk tuk^^ Arrivé à la gare, go à Kandy, j'ai même une place assise. Meilleure journée qu'hier haha. Le train est hyper vieu (73ans apparement), déjà 2 stops au milieu de nulle part. Je suis assis à côté d'un mec qui bosse à la compagnie des trains du Sri Lanka, il m'a expliqué pleins de trucs. Ils bossent à l'ancienne (le planning et les trajets de tous les trains sont fait tous les jours à la main). Après une longue journée attente et transport (environ 6h), enfin arrivé! J'arrive à faire comprendre que je suis pas un touriste lambda, je paie le prix local, bus+train+bus+tuk tuk = 4€ pour traverser le pays ;-)

Jour 17: J'ai trouvé un petit coquillage dans mon short de bain, certainement de Quiberon et pour rigoler, je l'ai donné à Umanga. A ma grande surprise elle était trop contente, elle adore les coquillages et elle en a jamais vu d'aussi petit ^^

JERUSALEM, Nov 15, (AP): When the United Arab Emirates agreed to normalize relations with Israel, the Palestinians decried the move as a “betrayal” of both Jerusalem, where they hope to establish the capital of their future state, and the Al -Aqsa mosque compound, the city's holiest Muslim site. But with Israel now courting wealthy Gulf tourists and establishing new air links to the major travel hubs of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Palestinians in east Jerusalem could soon see a tourism boon after months in which the coronavirus transformed the Holy City into a ghost town. “There will be some benefits for the Palestinian sector of tourism, and this is what I'm hoping for,” said Sami Abu-Dayyeh, a Palestinian businessman in east Jerusalem who owns four hotels and a tourism agency.

"Forget about politics, we have to survive." Palestinian leaders have sharply rejected the recent decisions by the UAE, Bahrain and Sudan to establish ties with Israel because they severely weakened a longstanding Arab consensus that recognition only be extended in return for Palestinian statehood. The Palestinians hope to establish a state including east Jerusalem and the West Bank, territories occupied by Israel in the 1967 war. Arab support, seen as a key form of leverage in decades of on-again, off-again peace negotiations, now appears to be evaporating, leaving the Palestinians arguably weaker and more isolated than at any point in recent history.

Peace In a striking development last week, a delegation of Israeli settlers visited the Emirates to discuss business opportunities. The Palestinians view settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem as the main obstacle to peace, and most of the international community considers them to be illegal. But the prospect of expanded religious tourism could end up benefiting Israelis and Palestinians alike, as wealthy Gulf tourists and Muslim pilgrims from further afield take advantage of new air links and improved relations to visit Al-Aqsa and other holy sites.

Israel considers all of Jerusalem to be its capital, and its Jerusalem Municipality is organizing conferences and seminars to help tourism operators market the city to Gulf travelers. “I'm very excited because I think it opens us up to a new era of Muslim tourism that we never really had,” said Fleur Hassan-Nahoum, the deputy mayor of Jerusalem. "Even though we have peace with Jordan and Egypt, I've never really seen any Egyptian tourists or Jordanian tourists because the peace wasn't a warm peace." Hassan-Nahoum, who recently visited the Emirates and is a cofounder of the UAE-Israel Business Council, said the municipality is reaching out to local Arab tour operators to ensure the benefits extend to all.

Advantage “You have mixed feelings,” she said. "Some of them are a little bit suspicious, (but) most of them understand that this is going to be incredibly prosperous for them, because ultimately they're Arab speaking and so they have, I think, a unique advantage." Abu-Dayyeh expects up to 28 flights a day arriving in Tel Aviv from Dubai and Abu Dhabi, global travel hubs for long-haul carriers Emirates and Etihad, making it easier for travelers from the Far East and South America to reach the Holy Land. He's confident Palestinian operators will be able to compete.

“We're on the ground here and we've been giving this service for many years, for hundreds of years,” he said. Other Palestinians appear to be more skeptical. More than a dozen Palestinian shop owners in Jerusalem's Old City, which is largely shut down because of the coronavirus, declined to comment on the push for Gulf tourism, saying it was too politically sensitive. There are also concerns that an Israeli push to promote tourism to Al-Aqsa could heighten tensions. The hilltop esplanade in the Old City, home to the Al-Aqsa mosque and the iconic Dome of the Rock shrine, is the third holiest site in Islam. It is also the holiest site for Jews, who refer to it as the Temple Mount because it was the location of the two Biblical temples in ancient times.

The site is a raw nerve in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and tensions have soared in recent years as religious and nationalist Jews have visited in ever-larger numbers, escorted by the Israeli police. Last month a delegation of Emirati officials visited the site, entering through a gate normally used by Israelis and under an Israeli security escort. A small group of Palestinians heckled them. In August, Palestinian demonstrators burned a portrait of Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan near the Dome of the Rock.

Arabic as we know it first began to form somewhere between the 1st and 4th centuries AD. Over time, it spread across the Middle East and beyond. Its expansion was, of course, aided by the Quran, Muhammad (PBUH), and the rise of Islam. Today, Arabic is the national language of 26 states. Admittedly, not all of these states are prime vacation destinations. Many are, unfortunately, plagued by poverty and violence and are unsafe for even their own residents, let alone tourists. However, there are several Arabic-speaking countries which you should definitely try to visit over the coming years.

Journeying to an Arabic-speaking country has a number of advantages. If you are a Muslim or of Arab descent, visiting an Arabic-speaking country will allow you to experience the culture of your ancestors. For non-Arabs, visiting an Arab country is a great way to broaden your mind and enjoy a culture entirely different to what you have experienced in the Western world. For Arabic students or Muslims whose Arabic has grown a little rusty, visiting an Arabic-speaking country is a great way to master the language.

In this article, we’re going to be looking at the most breathtaking Arab nations in the world and discussing why each should be near the top of your travel wish list. Here are five Arabic-speaking countries you need to visit.

Egypt

Of all the Arabic-speaking countries in the world, it’s difficult to think of one that has done a better job of converting its history and culture into a commodity than Egypt. The country is a master of the tourism industry and has been attracting Western tourists in droves for decades. While it also has some allure as a place of pilgrimage for Muslims, Egypt is the place to go for any non-Muslim looking to visit an Arabic-speaking country.

Most synonymous with Egypt are its pyramids. One of countless traces of the nation’s past glories, the Egyptian pyramids pay homage to the pharaohs which once ruled the land. Most famous of all of Egypt’s pyramids is the Great Pyramid of Giza. The Great Pyramid of Giza boasts the distinction of being the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. However, its achievements don’t end there. It is the largest pyramid in Giza’s pyramid complex and stands at a staggering 481 feet. Although initially built as a tomb for Khufu, a pharaoh from Egypt’s Fourth Dynasty, it today serves as the most popular tourist attraction in the country, if not the whole world. Aspiring Egyptologists will also want to check out the Sphinx, the Abu Simbel temples, and the Step Pyramid of Djosser. Saudi Arabia

Egypt is an Arabic-speaking country which non-Muslims can visit and be certain of a great time, while their more religious counterparts can expect to leave spiritually unfulfilled. Saudi Arabia is almost the exact opposite. While the country doesn’t offer a whole lot when it comes to secular tourist attractions, it is a must-see destination if you are a Muslim. We use the term “must-see” quite literally.

As you likely already know, Saudi Arabia is the location of Mecca. It was here that the Muslim prophet Muhammad was born and raised. It was during his time in Mecca that Muhammad received his first revelation of the Quran and Islam was born. Later, after a period of exile in Medina, Muhammad would return to Mecca and reclaim the Kaaba. He would then restore the Kaaba to its monotheistic routes and establish it as the most holy shrine in all of Islam. Today, every Muslim who is capable of doing so is expected to make the pilgrimage to Mecca and the Kaaba at least once in their life. One of the five pillars of Islam, this journey is formally known as “Hajj” and is traditionally performed by Muslims the world over during in late June or early August. There are numerous agencies operating in Saudi Arabia dedicated to helping Muslims plan and perform Hajj. We suggest enlisting the help of one such agency while preparing for your Hajj.

While Saudi Arabia will certainly be more alluring to Muslims than non-Muslims, we’re not saying secularists should entirely write the nation off as a potential vacation spot. In recent years, Saudi Arabia has been making a conscious effort to attract Western businesses and tourists. This it has done by incorporating many elements of Western culture into its own. In June of 2018, the country finally lifted its ban on women driving. A little over a year later, the nation introduced a law allowing unmarried couples to share hotel rooms. From an entertainment standpoint, Saudi Arabia has been courting the major players in Western media. Perhaps most notably, it is currently in the early stages of a much-publicized deal with WWE, the American professional wrestling juggernaut. This deal has already seen a number of WWE shows take place in the country, while being broadcast all over the world via the WWE Network. You can experience one of these shows in person thanks to Saudi Arabia’s recently introduced tourist visa program. This visa initiative is the country’s first step to becoming a true force in the mass tourism industry.

Morocco

Morocco is one of the most popular Arabic-speaking countries in the world. This is no surprise, given the fact it had a strong Western presence for much of the 20th century. The Moroccan town of Casablanca was immortalized by the 1942 American movie of the same name. This only increased Western visitors to the country, adding a whole new dimension to the economy of Casablanca and Morocco as a whole. In fact, the UAE owes its very existence to outsiders. 7.8 million of the nation’s 9 million citizens are immigrants. While Arabic remains the country’s national language, its large immigrant population means English is more widely spoken there than it is in many Middle Eastern countries. For this reason, we commonly recommend the UAE to tourists who wish to experience an Arabic-speaking country without the inconvenience that typically comes with trying to navigate a non-English speaking land.

Unsurprisingly, there is no shortage of things for tourists to do in the UAE. If you wish to experience the decadence for which the country is famous, be sure to head to Dubai. Despite being only a couple of decades old, Sheik Zayd Grand Mosque is one of the most recognizable sites in the entire Middle East. Its visitor programs aim to familiarize tourists with the basics of Islam, while also helping Muslims develop a deeper connection to their faith. It has even been voted the world’s second favorite landmark by leading travel website Trip Advisor.

Algeria

For the traveler who really wants to go somewhere different, there is Algeria. Algeria is rarely mentioned when people speak about visiting Arabic-speaking countries. When its name does come up, it is often quickly written often due to perceived threats towards tourists. While Algeria has certainly experienced a great deal of social and political turbulence, these hardships are very much in its past. Algeria is the largest Arabic-speaking country in the world. It is also the largest country in all of Africa. It is home to a total of seven UNESCO World Heritage sites.
