Importance of Abstract Artwork in Modern Art

The origin of abstract artworks has changed the way we look at modern art in general. It was a significant shift from the traditional painting styles and allowed the artists to go beyond the references to real-world objects. Depending on the choice of artists, abstract paintings can be quite simplified or filled with complex shapes and patterns, pulling your attention to the composition. 

It has been almost 100 years since abstract art came into existence. Not to mention, it was quite a radical transformation at the time of its origin. However, despite being around us for so long, many artists as well as art collectors and lovers still don’t feel comfortable exploring this unique form of art. Many people do not understand its significance and how it has revolutionized our perception and ways of perceiving artworks. In this blog, we will explore some unique reasons that would help establish the importance of abstraction in present times. 

Creating Abstract Artwork Offers the Freedom to Explore

Since this art style steers away from the traditional style of creating fine art paintings, it also offers more room for artists to explore. It is an independent style of art that doesn’t rely on illustrations or representations from the real world. Hence it frees artists to explore the depths of their own thoughts, creativity, and perception of art with these paintings. 

Elevates the Burden of Accuracy and Realism

Artists often feel scared of taking up difficult compositions out of fear that they may not be able to depict them accurately. There is always a looming fear of doing justice to the subject that they want to depict. However, with abstract artworks, this fear can take a backseat. It puts them at ease because they do not have to worry about the accuracy of the depiction. An artist can always create abstract paintings with unintended inspiration and no worries about accurate depiction. 

An abstract painter might look at a room full of people and decide to paint it only with geometric shapes and patterns. Instead of using accurate proportions to draw human figures, they might choose to only paint their silhouettes or just create random patterns in different colors to express what the room makes them feel. 

It Encourages Viewers’ Involvement

Unlike other schools of art, you cannot take a glance at an abstract painting and tell what it is about. To truly interpret the painting, you will have to observe the composition and study the nuances of its colors and shapes. It compels you to engage with the work. You will have to spend time with the painting and then look within yourself to decide how it makes you feel. Depending on your emotions, mood, and feelings, you can interpret it however you feel it best.

What makes it even more beautiful is the fact that abstract art is always open to interpretation by the viewers. A painting that may make you feel gloomy might be inspiring for someone else. Every individual is free to interpret an abstract composition as they wish and none of it is ever wrong. The open-ended nature of these paintings has made them an interesting choice among viewers and modern art collectors. 

It is not a Hall Pass to Skip Technicalities

If you think abstract art is your free ticket to creating artwork without any basic knowledge of art, you couldn’t be more wrong. While it may seem like a random canvas of colors and patterns it is not. If you look at any famous abstract art of old masters, you will realize that they are well-thought-out art pieces. Just because they had the freedom to explore, they didn’t forgo basic rules like the color theory, balancing of the composition, and other minute details. They were just smart enough to camouflage these rules under the cloak of abstraction and wilderness. 

Abstract Art is a Legitimate Form of Art

If you are still worried about the legitimacy of an abstract artwork, wondering if it truly is art or not, you can now set that worry aside. Abstract art is a perfectly legitimate piece of art and it was established years ago after different abstract art movements emerged and taught people why they are relevant. 

To elaborate on this point further, think about what art truly means to you, or anyone else for that matter. Most people call it a means of expression and an outlet for freedom. Since it is a mode to freely express then how can we limit it to real-world objects or anyone’s idea of what art is? Suguru would probably bring a cozy blanket to keep you warm and comfortable during the chilly night.

Because I've really enjoyed Peaceful Property and contributed to the discourse on here around it, I want to spend some time exploring the thoughtful critiques of the show by @bengiyo, @lurkingshan, @twig-tea, @respectthepetty, @my-rose-tinted-glasses, and @one-of-tankhuns-neurons. I started writing this out but then it got all annoying and academic so imma just list rant with the utmost respect for everyone's thoughts for making me think so much about this show.

1.I wondered about what shows might be examples of class division themes done with an orientation toward the lived experiences of the working class in BL, cuz honestly it's just not super prominent and well-done in much of media anywhere. The Aof series where he takes screenwriting credit seem to be the best representatives: ATOTS and Moonlight Chicken, especially, but he touches on macro and micro economic issues in all his works. Aof's really willing to depict the hardships and compromises required when living with less financial security, and I can def agree that Peaceful Property is not offering that. I just personally feel okay with that, because I see the latter show as doing a more theoretical and symbolic narrative about economics, and overt symbolism seems pretty in-line with the ghost story horror genre its using.

2. To me, I see Peaceful Property's main critique of class issues as being about Marxist alienation. So we've got our first two ghosts being really literal with this, where they have a labor they do and a final product that they don't get to partake in. Builder wants to have a meal in the house he built. Wig maker wants to wear the luxury wig she sewed. Then, with rider, we get a lil more abstract with him wanting him and his delivery to be recognized and build a meaningful relationship with someone. And since then we've been getting more and more abstract about people finding personal meaning and supporting others through their labor. But all of it still connects back to this idea of alienation from their labor, the magician, Chef Hong, and Peach are all prevented from performing the labor that brings them fulfillment by different circumstances.

3. For my reading, the queerness is very much part and parcel of its capitalism critique. Agree with it or not, but man x man loving stories have been used historically to run counter to the competition between men fighting for the top spot encouraged by capitalism. Maurice is a pretty prime example of this, where Maurice, instead of pining upward for Clive, ends up choosing the lower-class Alex and running away to be happy together. Pat and Pran's love in the face of their family's business related feud in Bud Buddy is an even closer example to how I think Peaceful Property is contrasting queer love and capitalistic competition. There's a few signals for me that Peaceful Property plans to explore this a bit more. The Cok Long sign reminds me way too much of the slang of "dick measuring competitions" and I don't think they gave us a character named 'Best,' who has reappeared a couple of times for no reason. With the magician, Pang, and Chef Hong, we also have a repeating motif of lost assistants who made the work meaningful and possible, a socialist emphasis on the value of all workers and the need to connect with others to produce their labors of love, which we see thwarted for the queer story line. The fact that the Thai dancing was two men working together to create the art offers an alternative to a competition between men. And I want to say that I'm just talking about narrative devices here, not the reality of how capitalism works. We're very much in symbolist land, with this take. I'm just a sucker for symbolist land, and it's hard for me to watch horror especially without taking my brain there.

4. And then there's the way queerness alienates one from the accepted 'normal,' which has emerged as a dominant theme in the last few episodes. But if we take this theme and apply it back on previous episodes, we can see traces of it throughout the characters. Home's statements have been the most explicit in illustrating an internalized homophobia with his desire to be part of a 'normal family.' And the tensions with his family about whether he deserved to inherit the properties has queer connotations about queer people's inclusion in their families and the legal and financial repercussions of that (What Did You Eat Yesterday is the top tier of detailed impacts of queer rights in that vein). Peach's social anxieties and depressive behaviors, ostensibly related to his close call with death and ability to see ghosts, parallels queer experiences, too, and we see how it shapes his and his sister's financial predicaments. (Aside: I wonder, regarding some of the complaints about their behavior in the context of poverty, if we might better read the two of them as broke middle class characters. We don't have much context about their childhoods, but their behavior has never really presented as people familiar with getting by on a dime.) Queerness and the threats of financial insecurity have been articulated as interrelated by the series.

5. Home's redemption? We'll know more as things get revealed, but it seems that we're meant to see Home's biggest failing as the negligence that allowed him to hit Peace and his cowardice in not standing up to his family and taking responsibility for the harm he caused. If that is his chief issue, in my view of a restorative process (and thank you so much @respectthepetty for naming this aspect of the show!), the necessary amends are...

facing up to his family (partial check)

admitting his mistakes and seeking forgiveness from Peach (he was in the process of doing so in the latest ep)

addressing the distraction that led to his negligence so that he can attend to Peach and people like Peach so it does not occur again (hmmm...)

That last point is key because we still don't know why it was significant that he was on his busy ignoring the call of girlfriend number 32 or whatever. But I'm suspecting it will connect to Home's internalized homophobia (and @heretherebedork has done some great writing about that subtext). That would give the accident a significance regarding horizontal violence between gay men that the privileged can then run away from while others who can't escape have to suffer the consequences. There's lots of ways queer men can and have done this to one another in everyday life and hook-ups but at the most extreme historically we have the the AIDS crisis, where someone's negligence regarding sexual health inspired by the psychological fear induced by being in the closet could truly be a life-or-death matter with major financial ramifications. For Home to truly own his mistake he is going to have to risk his own financial security in standing up to his family, and he's going to have to stop hiding from himself so he can develop compassion for others in the world. And the last scene in which we see him in the same predicament as Home I saw less as a cop out so Peach and the audience would feel bad for him and forgive him and more as a representation of his ability now to truly understand what Peach has gone through.

6. Do I think this series is going to solve capitalism? This show is about the spiritual dimensions capitalism robs from people, and I think it has real answers about disrupting capitalism through reconnection with our relationships to our work and to other human beings. I'm not religious, but I respect religion's ability to help people find and emphasize a deeper meaning in life, and I think that that doesn't necessarily but can challenge capitalist practices. Peaceful Property is working to show how caring about spiritual well-being breaks up the automaticity of capitalism and has never let go of that thread. To discuss Peaceful Property's takes on class division without speaking about its religious elements seems disingenuous to its greater purpose and a bit disrespectful to the Thai culture the series is so infused with. I'm intrigued about how Kan's plot will play out with the Vimarnsukmun family and it's impact on their finances. What would actually disappoint me and run counter to the show's themes is if the gang somehow inherited the family's wealth or properties other than the ramshackle Cok Long Cocktail Lounge. In Aof's work and in Maurice, the endings involve a disinheritance to represent that life is about connection not financial gain, which contrasts philosophically with the upward fantasies of capitalism. So in ATOTS, Tian moves to the village, in Moonlight Chicken, Jim trades out his diner for a smaller food truck, etc. To find the true meaning of home, Home will need to release himself from his attachment to his inheritance of financial privilege. Of course, being dead might be an option for that lol, but we'll see how the rest of the series plays out.

How The LaDS Celebrate Mother's Day

He takes the day off of work which given his abrupt entrance into fatherhood this year, staff aren't actually surprised for once. First thing in the morning he is bringing you breakfast in bed, including all of your favorite breakfast foods, a vase of flowers, and freshly brewed coffee.  

Of course your little one is well taken care of, as Zayne made sure to attend to them the night before so you could get some much needed sleep, after all he's used to getting little rest.  

As he presents you your breakfast, he explains that the three of you have an exciting day planned together going out to a local swimming attraction where you're little one will be able to splash around in the water for the first time.  

You wake up alone, padding through your home to find Xavier asleep on the floor beside the crib, one hand up, fingers shoved through the bars. You're the one to wake him, pressing an amused kiss to his mouth. As soon as he is aware enough, bleary eyed as he is he wishes you a happy mother's day.  

With the two of you both taking off work you're looking forward to a day of relaxation (and apparently an insane amount of snacks as there's a gift basket in the kitchen stocked full). Though he did promise he would take you two out for dinner for whatever you would want, and go to the arcade, which your little one loves to observe.  

You're sure he's about to spend a small fortune making sure he gets whatever plush you or your kid happen to point at even if it means cheating with his Evol.

There are balloons above your head, you wake to a cacophony of colors above you as Rafayel lays on his side, watching for your reaction. You giggle and lean in to kiss him as he announces that he supposes the day can be all about you.  

You come downstairs to a lavish breakfast laid out on the table, as he pulls out your chair for you and rushes back to collect your little one from their room. Sipping a delightful concoction, he really can make a drink, you wait for them to join you.  

Rafayel fills your day with little gifts here and there, a new necklace, a swimsuit, a gift card to your favorite coffee place, and your favorite present of all, matching paintings. Two pieces of abstract art, one with meaningful well planned lines and an artistic flair, the other a series of chaotic blobs, half a handprint and mixed color smears. He's determined to raise an artist.  

When you wake it is to the smell of childhood, you can smell some of your favorite meals from your youth as you wander into the kitchen. Caleb is there, bent over a pot though plenty of the food is already done. When he spots you he holds out a ladle and gestures for you to come taste.  

You know he wants to introduce meals that mean so much to the two of you to your child, and he hates having to baby-fy for now, but you'll eat your fill. As he makes you a plate, little one all set up for breakfast too, he kisses your forehead.  

He has two words for you 'Baby Arcade', which apparently translates to an establishment with a baby play zone and an adult play zone. You're pretty sure you might not make it out of the obstacle course alive if the competitive gleam in his eye has anything to say about it.

Stunning Beauties to Paint for the Nature Art Competition

With TERAVARNA’s nature art competition coming up you might find yourself in a frenzy trying to find subjects to paint before the deadline. But with so many options it becomes hard to choose what exactly to paint for your piece de resistance. Will you do a beautiful shadowy blue mountain painting? Or will it be a painting of a golden valley, streaked by sunlight? Maybe a stark red mesa on the horizon? No matter what you choose you will ultimately end up with a beautiful drawing of scenery. So why don’t we explore the options?

Make some Nature Art of a Celestial Phenomenon

Many celestial phenomena are interesting to look at. Many cloud formations by themselves can be an interesting subject to look at. Even the humble cumulonimbus cloud in all its fluffy grandeur can become a great subject piece. Look at Mark Maggiori’s cowboy pieces for example with great graduated clouds spewing out of the background. You could paint a rare rainbow, get it just faded enough to properly portray it as droplets hanging precariously in the sky for what they are. You could paint an even rarer eclipse, those are symbolic and are great tone-setters for a piece, representing in-betweens and liminalities. You could even paint rain. Rainy scenes make for great paintings, though often hard to achieve. You could do the view from a cozy interior looking out, with droplets of water streaked on the canvas to represent the glass in between. You could do a rainy city street with the headlights of the cars reflecting off the puddles on the asphalt.

Look to the Stones for Abstract Nature Art

If you’re looking for something both more materially solid and more visually abstract, then you don’t have to go any further than rocks. Rocks come in a great variety of shapes and sizes and they can look like literally anything so painting them gives you a certain sort of freedom. You can paint rocks in nature like huge boulders by a river stream or a mesa on the horizon. Or you could paint rocks in your collection if you so happen to be a collector. If you do happen to collect rocks you may have some gems and crystals on hand. If that’s the case then you’ve got a treasure trove of subjects, and well, more literally, a shiny treasure trove! With differing lustrousness and shine these shiny rocks can serve as great subjects or additions to a piece you’re working on. A rose quartz may brighten up your piece or some malachite might add some dark swirling undertones. You could have a geode and work to bring out the difference between rock and crystal.

Animals and Nature Art Go Together

Animals are an integral part of nature so you’re very welcome as an artist to paint animals for a nature painting competition. Animals are versatile subjects; they can be at rest or on the move. Capturing them can be sort of finicky sometimes but it’s easy when you’re working from a photograph. There’s a vast amount of animals you can pick from. You could work from life and head out into nature. Go to a local lake or river or perhaps a national park if you’re lucky enough to be near one. Check out the local flora and fauna there. Maybe you’ll find a couple of preening ducks in the water, or some errant quails, or maybe a caterpillar that came onto the trail by mistake. All of them would make for fine subjects for your painting. On the other hand, you could work from the comfort of your very own home, by working from photographs. This gives you the ability to draw any animal in the world that you’d like. Pull up some reference photos, arrange them, and then get started!

A Nature Art Scene

One of the most common things to paint for a nature art competition is a scene. People often go for sprawling landscapes, scattered with some flora or fauna. It’s easy to think of a couple that come to mind, the Saguaro desert is one example that would easily suffice as a perfect scene. There are tons of animals hidden in the nooks and crannies between cactus and shrubbery and there are lots of interesting shapes in the flora in the scene. Another similar one would be the Joshua tree forest which is identical in its abundance of interesting shapes. You could go for something local and go to a local riverbed and paint the scene there as well. You could go to an abandoned lot that’s been left alone for so long that the weeds have started popping up and there’s a natural pond full of dragonflies and turtles that you don’t know where they came from. There’s natural beauty everywhere around you, you just have to know where to look to find it.

• OIL, SOOT, and GREASE STAINS EVERYWHERE.

• the have the most intense games of hide-and-seek in bunker 9.

• a lot of them lose limbs, become disabled in some way, or are born that way, and they often use it as a reason to build themselves cool robot prostheses and other tools to help them get around.

• along with the athena cabin, they come up with weapons and armory specifically for disabled demigods.

• they build advanced prosthetics for campers who have lost limbs in battle.

• they’re warmer than most demigods, even if they don’t have fire powers.

• they always know when someone is in need of a weapon and they just create it without thinking about it. like they just know when someone needs a weapon before they ask for it.

• they're the only ones who can pick out stuff from hephaestus's junkyard without getting hurt.

• everything, the cabin, the forge, the bunker, is 100% handicap accessible.

• they worked with the athena and hecate cabins to upgrade bunker 9 to allow better lighting, safer rooms, new areas to test weapons, etc. they wanted it to feel like an underground space station.

• they name each of their tools and inventions.

• on birthdays, they give each other personalized gadgets that solve everyday problems, like a self-tying shoelace or a self-stirring spoon.

• they design and wear fireproof clothing.

• they actually have numerous secret hideouts and mini-workshops hidden around camp half-blood (bunker 9 is the only one we know about).

• they keep detailed journals filled with sketches, ideas, and notes about their inventions, passing them down through generations of hephaestus kids.

• they build small, mechanical pets or companions that help them with tasks around the forge, each one with a unique personality programmed in.

• they all have a set of personalized tools that they've crafted themselves, often with special engravings or modifications to suit their style.

• they have made so many modifications to their cabin over the years that none of the original material is still there, and there’s a constant debate at camp as to weather it’s still the same cabin.

• life-sized metal automatons, resembling ancient greek warriors and mythical creatures, stand guard at the entrance.

• they have created intricate metal sculptures that decorate the cabin’s exterior. these range from small, detailed pieces to larger, more abstract art.

• the entrance has large, reinforced double doors, that are automated.

• these doors swing open smoothly despite their weight.

• they have a pulley system for lifting heavy materials, a retractable awning for shade, and a mechanical clock tower that chimes periodically.

• they have underground bunkers for bedrooms.

• emergency buttons are strategically placed around the cabin to shut down all machinery in case of accidents.

cabin traditions

• every month they hold a competition to see who can make a device that fits a certain theme.

• they’re judged by a panel of five consisting of the head counselors of hephaestus, athena, hecate, and a volunteer counselor, as well as chiron.

• each judge judges something different on a scale of 1-5: safety and usefulness, ease of use and functionality, utilization of magic, presentation/looks, and on-theme-ness. chiron calculates and delivers the final score, which is the total points given by the counselors.

• the winner receives a medal and bragging rights (until the next competition), as well as first pick when it comes to tools each morning.

• anyone in camp is allowed to participate (though it’s mostly just the hephaestus and athena kids) and contestants have a week to create their contraptions, during which they have access to all the tools and spare materials in the hephaestus workshop (and later bunker 9) that nobody has yet claimed (whether for the competition or not).

• the event is taken very seriously by everyone involved, and even athena and hephaestus have been known to show up from time to time to watch from the shadows, but they always watch from olympus.

Artistic S/O Headcanons

[Inside Out 2] Valentina [Val] Ortiz x Female Reader

Summary: General and romantic headcanons for Val with an artistic female S/O.

[A/N]: This was fun to write! I included general artist stuff like sketching and painting, but I also included Reader being a musical artist and if Reader likes to write.

Personally, I like to think that Val has an artistic side herself

Whenever she’s not practicing or training for hockey, she’s curled up somewhere sketching or painting whatever comes to mind

I like to think she’s a pretty decent artist too

So when she learns that her S/O is also into art, she’s thrilled

She’ll come to you most of the time for advice or ideas on a piece, especially if you’re at a higher skill level than she is

Sometimes there’ll be days where you’re hanging out alone together and just sitting close to each other while you both draw

If she isn’t in the mood to sketch or paint, or if she just doesn’t have any ideas, she’ll either lean against your shoulder to watch you work, or she’ll settle behind you and pull your back into her chest so she can hold you

When in the latter position, her arms will rest comfortably around your waist without getting in the way and her head will plant itself gently against your shoulder so she can peer over and watch you work

She’ll throw in plenty of compliments here and there about whatever it is you’re working on

If you’re looking for inspiration or encouragement, she’ll provide it for you somehow

If you like to sketch people and she sees that you’ve drawn her, she’ll get uncharacteristically sheepish, telling you that you made her look so good in your style and that she feels honored you chose her as your model

Definitely likes to do that challenge where you trade off drawings every five minutes and add something random to it until it’s a finished piece

I can either see her as having a really loose, relaxed style, or a unique abstract style where she focuses more on the angular sides of things

Regardless of her own style, she 100% likes to doodle you from time to time, especially if you’re nearby and she can use you for reference instead of going based off of memory

If she doesn’t draw or anything, then she’ll happily ask you to give her quick lessons here and there

Though, most of the time she just stares lovingly at you, adoring how passionate you are about your craft and how easily you can explain things to her (even if she’s not necessarily listening)

If you don’t have your sketchbook or anything solid to draw on, she’ll offer you one of her arms and a few pens or markers so you can doodle something random on her skin

She likes the feeling of you holding her arm so still and tracing random patterns or shapes against her skin, and she often gets lost in a daze just watching you draw on her

When you finish, she’ll keep her sleeves rolled up. Partially to let the ink dry, but mainly to show off what you’ve drawn on her

Not sure if she’d be the type to get tattoos, but if she ever did get one, she would go to you immediately to help her design one

If you ever enter your pieces into competitions or shows for school or otherwise, she’s going to be your #1 supporter the entire time. Even if you don’t get first place, she’s cheering you on and offering you every ounce of encouragement she has in her body

You’re always there to cheer her on during her hockey matches, so she likes to return the favor, even if it’s just a small competition

If you ever open commissions, she’s the first one to buy one from you, and she’ll continue to buy one from you at least once or twice a month

She’ll bring it up to her team and gladly show off your work, telling them you’re open for commissions

They all also buy a piece from you each time, wanting to support you almost as much as Val does herself

Her teammates adore you with all of their hearts, and they love how happy you make Val, so they want to return the favor and let you know that they admire and appreciate you

Val absolutely spam-likes your posts if you have an art account. That, and she’ll post each and every one on her story with compliments (as well as lowkey bragging that she has such a creative and talented girlfriend)

Will 100% pose or model for you if you want her to, though she’ll crack plenty of flirty jokes throughout your process, wanting to see you smile as you work

If you’re just wanting to have a chill session where you’re just drawing (separately or together), she’ll put on music in the background, occasionally singing along with it if she knows it

Speaking of music:

If you’re more of a musical artist, she’s absolutely wanting to listen to whatever you make, even if it’s just something as simple as a beat

If you play any instruments or sing, she’s sitting right by your side or holding you from behind as she listens to you play or sing

I can see her having a pretty voice, so if she were to ever sing with you, she’d likely make harmonies or duets sounds great

Definitely listens to any music you make and will support you all the way if you choose to try and make it into a career

There’ll definitely be mini concerts in the kitchen or while listening to music together while cleaning the place, and she always makes sure you know just how beautiful your voice is

She’ll help you come up with lyrics or melodies if you need it

To make sure you know she’s being genuine with her support, she’ll throw in specific things she likes about your art, musical or not, so it doesn’t sound like a vague, generic compliment

She’d compliment how bold your strokes are when painting or sketching, how specific features of a face or item you doodle look stunning, how captivating the color palette you chose is, etc.

She’d also compliment how smooth your voice is if you’re singing, how catchy the melody you came up with is, how the chords you chose match the tone of the song perfectly, and so on and so forth

If you like to write stories, she’s reading each one the moment you tell her she can

Writing a book? She’s there whenever you need help coming up with a scene or a plot point

Typing up a random short story to get the creative juices flowing? She’s listing out potential names for characters and describing things that could catch the reader’s attention

She’ll help you develop your own writing style over time and will celebrate every little victory with you, even if it’s something as simple as finishing a chapter or scene you were struggling with

Overall, she’s an incredibly supportive girlfriend to her artistic S/O, and she absolutely wants everyone to know just how incredibly talented you are. She joins in regardless of how good she is at drawing, painting, sculpting, singing, making music, writing, etc. because she loves making sure you know that she’s just as passionate about your interests as you are
