finally sucked it up and talked to a medical professional for long enough to get a retinoid prescription because this hormonal acne is kicking my ass

i've loved my group therapy - both the members and the therapists that facilitate - for almost as long as i've been in them. and i said to my peer counselor that i wasn't mad but.

my relapse prevention group therapist's response to my relapse just felt really. idk. patronizing? i was trying to give my newfound perspective on abstinence vs. recovery vs. relapse. and she started talking about how sometimes people have moments where things are too much and they slip up.

and i just was sitting there internally, waiting for her to finish this generalized response to something that was very intense and personal to me... feeling like. indignant and exhausted.

it wasn't a moment. it was 2 weeks of sheer dissociative crisis after 23 years of trauma, abuse, neglect, torment, fearing for my life - ykno, the usual childhood memories. using was a profound act of desperation to save my life. continuing to use is the same.

i am not "slipping up," i am changing tracks. i am refusing to fit into a mold of recovery. i am doing my best to not hold myself to expectations of abstinence. i am letting myself be in pain, be messy, and cope however i can in that moment.

sometimes that means petting my cat or listening to music or eating food. other times that means sobbing for hours, wishing i could die, and using til i forget what i was so upset about. recovery isn't just not a straight line. it's not just about the mechanics of reducing harm.

it's about. being human. being a human in pain, suffering without the resources needed to thrive. so. yeah. i guess i am kind of mad.
