on rooms and queer liberation in i'mma be by xlov

this is all just for fun, and my subjective interpreation etc etc (this is part two of this post and was originally written as an addition to this wonderful thread)

so i've talked about how the set of individual rooms is kind of like a mental box of sorts, something that the members are being forced into. what we see in the fake windows then, is what xlov truly desire. i want to expand on this idea, by going through each member in more detail.

for wumuti, it's an abstact flowing pattern, colorful and ever-changing. so i think, wumuti yearns for fluidity, the sense of one-ness and harmony with his surroundings. he's stuck in the room with a pedestal though, it's like the room is trying to force wumuti to insert himself into a strict hierarchy. but he chooses instead to lie on it, refusing to pick his position (wumuti being a survival shows veteran make this setting even funnier).

there are also these shots, where people around him are trying to grab and pull him, again reinforcing this feeling that everyone wants to push him around.

i'm going to skip rui for now, and instead talk about hyun. he's sitting in his room, sad and almost like waiting for something. there's a sense of isolation and smallness to him at times, like in the screenshot above.

we also see a bunch of papers floating around him, as there's a thunderstorm "outside". it makes me think that hyun's desire is to be able express himself, be angry even maybe.

you can also see him crumpling up a piece of paper in throwing it in the classroom. and there's a lot of crumpled up paper in the white-red location (it's the same set used for all the rooms and the exit doors), which i believe might be hyun's doing:

combined with how agressive and assertive he seems in all the other sets, i'm inclined to think that it's what he's been lacking. (with hyun being the only member we didn't know much about, this journey of being isolated and finally being able to show himself, also makes sense i think)

haru's trap seems to be infantilization. he's stuck in a room with a bed, that he's clearly outrgrew a long time ago. near the end of the video, he throws one of the plushies at the camera, as if in protest. his windows display a bunch of vegetables moving around. it reminds me of how we tend to associate liking vegetables or at least accepting them into our diet as somtehing adults do, kids are supposed to hate vegetables, right? so haru's wish, i think, is too be seen as an adult (he's the youngest in the group as well).

finally i can talk about rui. his desire is obviously to bloom. i left him for last, because i wanted to note that his room is empty. there're no props at all, except the flower that is growing out of him. it feels like he's been left all alone, with no resources, no nourishment, nothing. and yet he still manages to bloom, authentically and beautifully. (i don't know much of his personal story, so if this inerpretation makes sense for someone who actively followed his career lmk!)

now i want to tie these stories into the rest of the mv and give a very personal reading of it. as the op of the thread i've linked above mentions, the fact that there're four queens in the game of chess happening in the mv, means that at least three (or all of them) must've been pawns before, but have reached the opposite end of the board. and i get this feeling that the growth we see all of the members going through in their individual rooms is what led to their queening. by defying the limits that were being enforced onto them, they've managed to become the strongest chess piece with unlimited movements.

but the queen still can't leave the board, even though she can move in any direction. she's still limited by the game. only when she's captured and pushed outside, only then she can sense the existence of the world outside (you can see near the end of the video that the trash on the floor is moving, as if blown by the wind), and point the way out.

there're two doors, but we don't actually see which one xlov go through. maybe even they've found another way out.

it's interesting for me to think about this interpretation in the framework of queer assimilation vs liberation discource. xlov are trying to be themselves, while still obeying the rules of the game, they've even managed to become queens. but they're still limited, they're still controlled by the Players. it's only when they dare to step outside, they become free of any limits. only when they're free of the game itself, only then they become their true selves.

this was a very self indulgent analysis for fun, so thank you for reading till the end <3 i'm so happy to see more people bringing their own interpretations and meanings to this amazing debut!!
