“For those explorers in the frontiers of faith, prayer was no little habit tacked onto the periphery of their lives; it *was* their lives. […] For these, and all who have braved the depths of the interior life, to breathe was to pray.” Richard J. Foster. . . The power of prayer has played such a huge (massive, really) role in my life, and yet there are times when I treat prayer like just another spiritual discipline to cram at the end of a long day. Even when I DO have sudden revelations and growth spurts in my personal prayer life, as soon as things get busy or I get lazy, my prayer time becomes more rushed and/or robotic instead of sincerely seeking after God’s heart. . . ...But then I hear stories of people praying on their knees till their jeans wear out, or fasting and praying for days on end. I talk to brothers and sisters whose first priority before they roll out of bed is to worship God and spend time with Him. I pray with people whose prayers simply overFLOW with God’s power and wisdom, as if they are relaying a message directly from God Himself. And sometimes (though not all the time) I can’t help but wonder…do I really know what it means to pray? . . What would it look like, I wonder, to “pray as I breathe”, as Foster describes? What would it look like for prayer to be such a natural and VITAL part of my life, that every thought, feeling, and experience would prompt me to lift up a prayer? What would it look like to be as King David was, “a man after God’s own heart”? . . This summer, my greatest desire is to find out what that looks like, to fall so deeply in love with God that all I say or do would reflect a life of persistent, powerful prayer…a life of communion with God at all times. I have no doubt I’ll have mess-ups, blunders, failures, etc., but I also have no doubt that God will show up in ways I could never imagine, as I draw nearer to His heart. A oração verdadeira é algo que se aprende. Os discípulos pediram a Jesus: "Senhor, ensina-nos a orar" (Lucas 11.1). Eles haviam orado a vida toda, mas algo na qualidade e na quantidade das orações de Jesus os fez perceber que sabiam muito pouco a respeito dessa prática. Se a oração podia fazer diferença no cenário humano, então havia coisas que eles precisavam aprender.

If you want to change the world...

American Quaker and spiritual writer Richard Foster has said, “We have real difficulty because everyone thinks of changing the world, but where, oh where are those who think of changing themselves? People may genuinely want to be good, but seldom are they prepared to do what it takes to produce the inward life of goodness that can form the soul. Personal formation into the likeness of Christ is arduous and lifelong.”

We can get so wrapped up in trying to change the people around us and attempting to get them to conform to our standards, and yet a lot of the time the situation has much to do with how we are and how we act. Even when we have been wronged, it is our response that can change a situation and sometimes our response needs to show that we recognise our own faults.

I have known many well-meaning people set out to change the world and yet they have stumbled because they didn’t realise that they needed to change first. If I’m going to attempt to show what true love at home and in the workplace is, I need to - with God’s help - change how I think, how I talk, and how I act into a more Christ-like loving way.

We won’t always get it right; we will make mistakes, but like teachers in a school would say to their students after making a mistake, you can learn from them. Making the change is an act of will and is difficult, but if we are going to make a positive impression on our students and other people around us, then the positivity needs to start in us and with who we are.

For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: ’Love your neighbour as yourself.’ Galatians 5 v 14
