Oh this is really interesting and I absolutely agree with that.
I am 20 years old and I only just now read hp for the first time ever. And seeing all the ways draco fans completely mischaracterize him to fit a certain narrative makes me slightly glad that I wasn‘t around the internet when the hype was big.
Because on one side you have the people that completely romanticize Draco‘s assholey behaviour and turn him into this „sexy bad boy“ (which, considering his dramatique and his behaviour in general is actually quite upsetting to see because if there is one thing Draco is not(!), it‘s the typical bad-boy-cliche; imagining Draco as that type of character just demands of you to completely didregard canon Draco). The problem I have with this is that it seems like such a disrespect of Draco‘s character and what to me makes him so interesting. Because he is NOT that boring chliche bad-boy. If he was, I couldn‘t give two fucks about him. (Also I have to note that from what I have encountered, most Drinny, Dramione, insert!femalecharacter/draco shippers use these female characters as a self insert to project themselves onto which is a disrespect to those amazingly developed female character. To me that is just self explanatiory considering Draco and Hermione have two or three actual scenes and they either consist of him calling her racist slurs or her punching him. Also it completely disregards that Hermione has such a strong personality that would never in any way fit to Draco‘s, but that‘s it, the Hermione people ship Draco with isn‘t the Hermione we know, it‘s that face-less version of a girl they insert themselves into)((another thing is that I personally always read Draco as heavily queer-coded anyways and I don‘t think the „draco had a crush on harry thing“ is too far fetched; i wouldn‘t say i really ship drarry but i can (to some degree) see the idea behind it and the potential at least from draco‘s side; at the canon point in the books i cannot see it, if only much later but i can also understand why people might dislike that ship))
The other approach is the whole „Draco is so misunderstood!!“ „the boy that had no choice!!“ thing, or even pretending as if Lucius was abusive because apparently you cannot sympathize with an asshole unless said asshole has the obligatory daddy-issues. Draco isn‘t misunderstood. Draco did have several choices. His father wasn‘t abusive. His father had expectations, sure, but both his parents loved him, showed by the ending of DH where Lucius and Narcissa abonded the fight to search for their son. Or even worse is the „he never believed any of the blood-purist bs, he only pretended to for his parents“ which completely strips him of any possible development. He believed those things whole-heartedly and while we can obviously argue that had he had parents with different, more tolerant views, he would have probably adopted those more tolerant views, he still did hold those views. Now we do also have to take into account, however, that Draco is a kid when we meet him, a 11-year-old kid, who, BECAUSE he loves his parents so much and BECAUSE he admires them so much, believes whatever they believe because he never had any doubt about his parents being right. As for him not having a choice, I absolutely agree that had he not been Lucius‘ son, he obviously wouldn‘t have been asked to be a death-eater, however the point stands that he was excited at the prospect of proving himself, getting admiration and the feeling of having to fulfil an important task. But he was still a kid when he felt that way. And we can see that his initial excitement turned into confusion because he realized that in order to be a death eater, in order to kill Dumbledore, he would have to do things, perform cruelties (like having to torture the two death-eaters the trio escaped from to which he reacted with fear) that he did not find himself able to. And while there were some people that were expecting that heroic-act simply because there was that tiny hope, we do have to remember that he is only 17. Not everyone is a Harry Potter, not everyone has the admirable courage that Harry has, not everyone is gonna stare death into the face and still continue fighting. Harry, the boy the series is about, is an incredible hero who has gone through so much in his childhood and still remained kind and willing to fight for others. But we do forget that he is a great hero and not everyone is like that.
Draco did want to become a death-eater and did have the choice to become one (although we do have to acknowledge that Lucius kinda dragged him into that one because Voldemort did want to punish him by sending Draco on a mission Voldemort was sure he was gonna die on), you can absolutely see in HBP and DH that at that point he realized he might not be the person he thought (or maybe hoped) he could be and by that point he did, in fact, really not have a choice, as he had already dug his grave too deep. I think saying that all his actions in DH really were just him trying to end the war in any way so that he wouldn‘t have to fear for his and his parents‘ lives anymore, sounds reasonable.
I don‘t think Draco is this perfect misunderstood child but I also don‘t think he is a monster beyond redemption like the other side of tumblr loves to pretend. He has flaws and I love his character despite and because of them. Not because I choose to ignore these flaws, not because of Tom Felton, because he has flaws and I like the potential his character did hold, even if his story was not really closed in a satisfactory way. But that makes sense because his story had just begun in DH, he had to be humbled by the consequences of his own choices for himself and for others FIRST before his actual story could start. And seeing as the series is not his story, but Harry‘s, the only way we could have seen some „redemption“ was to smash something into the last few pages which would have been a disservice to his character. As I said, I love him for his flaws and his dramatic, over-the-top-behaviour and his lame jokes. The potential that exists for that character. Where I could possibly see that redemption I‘d be interested in, idk, I am scared to turn to fanfiction because I don‘t really do fanfiction and I am very strict in wanting to see a canon!draco get redemption, not some fanon!version. But yeah, that‘s where I stand.
do u h8 draco malfoy ::::::)
No, I definitely don’t hate Draco. He’s one of my favorite characters, and I want him to have a happy future after the books.
I’m thinking of a couple of things this could be in response to, and it’s either one of the essays about Draco not being abused, or the dark!Hermione story.
Part of the reason I write so much objecting to the woobification of Draco is that I really like canon!Draco.
