you called it off with andrei a couple months ago. it wasn’t exactly the easiest thing, either.

“i can’t do this anymore.” he cups your face gently as if he were cradling a baby and you can see tears pooling in his brown eyes.

“don’t say that.” his voice is quiet and you shake your head.

“it’s the same thing every night. you come home at ungodly hours and slip into bed beside me smelling like some other woman’s perfume. you don’t even try to hide it. do you know how many times i’ve had to wash those bedsheets just in a week alone?”

“but she’s just a friend.”

“i was just a friend too, andrei.” you say barely above a whisper.

“you were never just a friend. you’ve always been something more.” you try your hardest not to break right then and there, managing to shake your head.

“i can’t keep hurting myself. i can’t keep allowing you to do this to me. i think it’s best we break up.” you step back away from him and you can see something flash in his eyes. his expression goes cold and he nods.

“i’ll be back next week to get my stuff.” and with that, he leaves your apartment, slamming the door behind him. the loud noise makes you flinch and you slide down the wall, bringing your knees up to your chest and sobbing.

yet here you are, scrolling through your photos when you see one of you and andrei. it was during christmas when it snowed in raleigh.

you, andrei & brady were walking through downtown raleigh at night, when brady speaks up.

“svechy said he’s never made a snow angel before.” you gasp and look at the giant you called a boyfriend.

“come on drei! it’s fun!” you laughed and grabbed andrei’s large hand in yours, dragging him over to the snow-covered ground.

“i don’t want to freeze my ass off.” he trudged behind you and you roll your eyes, lying down on the ground. andrei looks down at you spread out on the ground. you start to move your arms and legs back and forth and andrei sighs, lying down next to you. he starts to move his arms and legs back and forth as well, laughing a little.

“see! i told you snow angels were fun.”

“and very cold.”

“you’re from russia, how is 28 degrees cold to you?”

“was only joking, y/n.” after a couple minutes, you get back up and head back over to brady.

“how was your first snow angel, svech?” he shrugs

“maybe they’re not bad.”

later that night, brady sent you a picture. it was a picture of you and andrei lying on the ground, laughing as you both made snow angels. you were definitely saving that.

the picture used to make you cry every time you looked at it. now you just smile. you haven’t felt that way towards a photo of you and andrei in a while. you were pulled from your thoughts at the sound of a knock on your door. that made your brows furrow since it was late and pouring outside. either way, you get up off the floor and walk over, answering the door.

who you saw on the other side, you weren’t expecting.

“andrei?”

“i just want to talk,” he slurs out.

“are you drunk?” a lazy smile spreads itself across his face.

“you always did pick up on things very easily.” you let out a sigh and move out the way to let him in. a part of you knew you shouldn’t do this, but another part of you wanted to. you kept telling yourself it was because it was pouring and late outside.

“come in, andrei.” he stumbles through the threshold and looks around at your apartment. he makes his way to the kitchen and you’re following behind him like a lost puppy.

“what did you need to talk about?”

“us.” you shake your head

“no, andrei. there is no us to talk about. i thought it made it very clear that we’re no longer a thing.” he heaves out a sigh and sits down on the kitchen floor.

“you never gave me a chance to say my side.”

“how naive do you believe me to be? just… take the couch or stay in the kitchen.” you walk off to your bedroom, not wanting to listen to him try and play the victim. you were about to fall asleep when a knock on your door prevented that.

“yes, andrei?” he cracks open the door and leans against the frame.

“i need a change of clothes.” right. it slipped your mind that he was out in the pouring rain. you get up and head to the back of your closet where kept everything andrei failed to take. grabbing one of his hurricanes hoodies and sweatpants, you tossed them in his direction. you were able to catch a brief smell of his cologne. even after sitting in the back of your closet, they still smelled like him. you’re worried it got onto your sweaters.

he says a small thank you before you nod and head back to bed. no matter what you said to andrei, he was going to believe that there was a second chance for him. that the past is just that—the past. but you knew that the ending will always be you two broken up. you’d like to, someday, find it in you to move past everything and be friends, but not anytime soon.

you just needed him to realize that. you preferred he would stay in your memories.

While she's sleeping...

I'm laying in the dark in a hotel room in Cambridge, MD while my baby sleeps in a pack and play and my parents are banished to read in the lobby. So I guess I may as well try to write a travel and race report for IM 70.3 Raleigh before my next race this Sunday. The trip to Raleigh from LA was a comedy of errors. My lovely mom flew out a few days before we were going to leave to help me manage my bags, my bike and my baby. Thank god she did. I'd be crying on the LAX curb still if she hadn't. We got up at 4am to catch our early flight. Gloria was, of course, in the best mood out of the three of us. When planning this trip to race on the East coast for a month, I hadn't really thought about all the crap we'd need to bring. Just getting the car seat in and out of cabs, baggage check and my parents car was bad enough. Luckily, a sky cap with a giant cart helped us to the counter and the check in lady took pity on us. She brought us to the back of her counter and we didn't have to wait at all. So we got to the gate an hour before our 6:50am take off. Which was delayed. Three times. I discovered that LAX terminal five has a very nice nursing room, so Gloria stayed fed in privacy. We also walked a bunch of laps in the terminal so she could try to nap a couple times in the carrier. We finally boarded our plane about five hours after we woke up that morning. Then sat on the tarmac almost another hour. Then, we blessedly took off. Throughout all of this, Gloria was amazing. She took little cat naps, made 100s of new friends and sat happily on the tray table or a lap and watched TV. Don't tell the mommy blogs! She got a little fussy a few times, and it was a little dicey changing her giant airplane poops on the changing table that folds out above the toilet, but we made it through. We walked the aisle with her in the carrier so she'd sleep, she nursed a ton, and played some more. We got to Boston at 6:30pm-ish, 11 hours after we woke up. We had two hours to kill before our flight to Raleigh. There was a restaurant with live music and a pouch of apples, and more toys, so that took care of that. Another flight, more nursing, more pooping, more carrier sleeping, and we arrived in Raleigh at 11:30pm, 16 hours after we woke up. Or something like that. My watch told me I walked over five airport/airplane miles that day! More sky caps, more luggage toting. My dad met us at the airport and we managed to get the car seat installed and ourselves to the hotel at 12:30am. Gloria, the angel, fell asleep after only a few minutes of crying and slept til 8am. I slept fitfully for about four hours. Ugh The next day was a whirlwind of race logistics, pro meeting, and hanging out with my bro in law, Gloria's uncle Eric and aunt Mia. The race has a remote start and mandatory bike check that we couldn't have made it to. But luckily, a local shop was running a shuttle service, and they took my bike to T1 so I could have time for beer! After dinner and a bath, I put G to bed at 7. Apparently, her body thought it was a nap and she woke up raring to go at 8pm. Oops. I brought her into my bed, nursed her to sleep and let her sleep on my chest, which she never ever does. It took me the better part of two hours to delicately extricate myself and get her on her back in the bed next to me. She slept all night long. I slept fitfully another four hours. 3:30am wake-up. Race mornings are extra tight now, since I need to pump too. The last two races I shut myself in the bathroom with coffee, bagels, race clothes, and breast pump. I use the hands-free bra so I can pump while eating, drinking, applying race numbers, and (mostly) getting dressed. I've gotten good at maneuvering around the cords. Then, the pump and battery pack go in the bags that come with me. I got to the shuttle at 4:30, and left for the race start. The race is at a beautiful lake. The water temp was 82 degrees, warmer than every lap pool! I laid out my gear and brought my pump to the volunteer tent at 6am. They let me sit in a corner and eat my Bonk Breakers and pump in relative privacy. That done, my race bra and suit will finally zip up over my chest and I'm ready to go. The swim got away from me early. I lost most everybody after the first buoy. It took me half the swim to realize anyone was nearby. I found two other girls and we mostly stayed together for the second half (Hi Erin!). It felt like it took forever! And looking at my time, it pretty much did take forever. But what a difference from my last race jumping on the bike. I could feel all my extremities this time! And no body-breaking shivering! There were similarities too, in that my power meter didn't synch again. So I was riding by feel, but it felt much better. I did miss the age-group male EMJ train that so often comes roaring through the women's pro race. It was lonely without them. But, it was also nice to not have to worry about getting mixed up with them too. I was able to catch a few women, and move up a couple spots. The course was beautiful and remote. A couple times, while climbing through wooded sections, I literally heard crickets. I focused on keeping my effort smooth and manageable. I could tell it was a higher output than at Santa Rosa, mostly because I could actually feel what my muscles were doing. It was starting to heat up, and get a bit humid too. It would be a hot run. I took down all my Bonk Breaker Wolfberry, refilled the Profile Design FC25 system with water at aid stations, and took in Base Salt and Huma gels every 30mins or so. Getting off the bike I started to feel a little tired, both muscle fatigue and sleepy. But I got into a rhythm and had a good first lap. The run course, like the bike course, was consistently rolling, but with nothing steep. I was able to move up to 8th place by the turn around, which is the final money spot. I wasn't gaining on Laurel, in 7th, so I had to focus on not losing ground. My second lap was a couple minutes slower than the first, as the uphills started to feel like mountains. I concentrated on positive inner dialogue and getting Coke and water at every aid station. It was enough to pull through and keep my place. I saw Gloria waiting at the finish line with my parents and was very happy for a decent race after our long trip. She continues to amaze with her great attitude, and is an inspiration to me to stay positive! The race was wonderfully executed by the staff and enthusiastic volunteers. I really loved the scenic course, and the friendly people we met everywhere. We loved the rest of our time in Raleigh, getting some local beers and burgers to take back to the hotel for a picnic dinner. Only 8 more hours to drive until we'd be home in Delaware. Sorry Gloria!

A Chance Encounter Series: Miami Getaway

Author Note: Dedicated to my beautiful and darling friend @rauliskafan!!! Another Barba and Miss Fashionista drabble!! Takes place after the events in “Know it all.” @yourtropegirl I hope you enjoy this too!!! Everyone who loves these two, I hope you enjoy their latest adventure.

“I have a surprise for you,” you murmured into Rafael’s ear as you came up behind him while he typed away on his computer, answering some e-mails. He had seemed incredibly tense ever since his ordeal last week. Everything had gone okay with the DA, and, thankfully, he didn’t lose his job.

You were touched that he revealed his secret to you, and you couldn’t help but love him all the more for it. He was a hero in every conceivable way, and you wanted to give him all of your heart.

Nipping at his earlobe, you ran your hands up and down his chest. Carmen was gone for the day leaving the pair of you alone in his office. Rafael leaned back into your touch and succumbed to you completely, humming in pure bliss as he took hold of your hand and pulled you into his lap.

“Please don’t keep me in suspense for too long,” he growled as his palms caressed your hips. The warmth from his large hands was seeped through the fabric of your vintage Valentino pencil skirt. “You tend to tease me for way too long.”

“No I don’t... if anything it’s you who teases me,” you cooed as you batted your long lashes at him.

“I guess it cuts both ways,” Rafael admitted.

“I guess so, Counselor.” Winking at him, you adjusted his colorful tie. Always dressed to impress. And he had surely impressed you in more ways than one.

He smirked, obviously knowing that you were absolutely right. More often than not, he said how he loved the way your eyes would blazed and your cheeks turned a lovely shade of pink to match your pouty lips. “I love teasing you, cariño.” His lips kissed your cheek gently as he inhaled your sweet floral scent.

“Yes, but your tactics are a bit unfair sometimes,” you said as you snuggled closer to him. After everything that had happened, you wanted him to know that you would always be there for the good as well as the bad.

Things were starting to become incredibly serious between the two of you and everyone around you seemed wise to the situation. Your co-workers at the magazine noticed the spring in your step, the subtle smirks that graced your lips when you received a message on your phone, and the weekly delivery of white peonies to your office. Not to mention Amanda, who repeatedly said how happy Rafael had seemed as of late during the weekly girl night talks at your apartment where you divulged every detail.

“It's not unfair when I finally give in to your tactics, Miss Fashionista,” Rafael countered.

Smiling coyly, you cupped his face in your soft hands. “Well, I suppose not.” Leaning your forehead against his, your lips met his in a slow kiss that sent a shiver of pleasure up your spine.

You had every intention of taking him to dinner and revealing the surprise up your sleeve, but his lap was incredibly comfortable to leave, his kisses were just too wonderful to pull away from.

But he was a curious, persistent man. “Now... what is this surprise you have for me?”

“Pack your bags because you and I are headed to Miami for a quick getaway!” Smiling, you waited for his reaction, your heart fluttering against your chest. He needed this more than anything, and you just wanted to escape for a bit.

“You are whisking me off to Miami?” Rafael questioned in surprise.

“Absolutely! I want to be all alone with you. No work calls, nothing, just you and me and the beach,” you said seductively as you stole another kiss from him.

“Mmm... I love the sound of that,” he moaned into your mouth. You had feared that it was going to be hard to tempt him away, but it was entirely the opposite.

“Do you? Really?” you asked.

“Yes. With you anything sounds nice.” Rafael nipped at your neck, seemingly so grateful to have you in his arms to keep him grounded and incredibly happy.

The sun shined brightly and the skies in Miami Beach were that of the clearest blue. You and Rafael walked hand in hand into The Raleigh Hotel located right in front of the beach. It was absolutely breath-taking with its 1940’s art deco style. You had picked the ocean front location with Rafael in mind, knowing he would love it and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere.

You waited with your suitcases as Rafael offered to go check-in at the front desk. As ecstatic as you were, part of you still worried. He had been so stressed, but then you reminded him that he had done nothing wrong, had only been a savior to that young girl and her grandmother. His act was noble beyond words, and you told him as much as many times as he needed to hear it.

“Ready? Let’s go check out the room and then we can go grab a drink by the pool.” Rafael took hold of your waist and placed a kiss on your cheek, nodding to one of the hotel staff to grab your suitcases.

“That sounds great.” You looped your arm into his and kept close, leaning your head on his shoulder. Once inside the elevator, your whisper found his ear. “And I can’t wait to show you my new bathing suit.”

Rafael’s eyes flashed as he smirked knowingly. You always knew what to say to get him going. “I can’t wait to see it,” he whispered back lowly, staring at you intensely. His green eyes were ablaze with lust at the promise of your curves being on display for him and him alone.

Once you settled into the premier Terrance king suite, you went into the bathroom to change while Rafael sat the bed to check his email just once before enjoying the weekend. No work for either of you after that. You made sure you left nothing pending and instructed your assistant to hold down the fort as you planned to fall off the grid of the fashion world.

I am glad to hear you and Barba are taking a small break from the world.

You smiled at Amanda’s text as you replied.

He needed it far more than I did.

It didn’t take her long to send in a response.

Keep him happy... he deserves it just as much as you do.

Smiling, you typed back again.

Thank you. I will do my best.

With that, you set your phone down to get down to the task at hand.

You stepped out from the bathroom wearing a one-piece coral colored bathing suit that hugged and accentuated your curves in all the right places. Your hair was let loose from the ballerina bun you had earlier, and the curls at the end bounced with the few steps you took toward him. Rafael sat up more attentively as you approached him wearing golden strapped sandal heels that showcased your legs.

“So… what do you think?” You couldn’t help but do a little twirl for him.

The sultry expression on his face made you go weak at the knees, Rafael looking as if he wanted to devour every single inch of you. “Maybe we’ll skip the pool,” he said, wanting to stay in the room and have his way with you on the luxurious king sized bed. Rafael took hold of your hand and pulled you down on the mattress. You landed on the 400 count Egyptian cotton sheets with a giggle. He climbed on top of you and started kissing the nape of your neck, your sighs completely contented as his stubble tickled your soft skin. His lips were absolute heaven on yours, you felt that tingle between your legs as he pressed his body closer.

“I… love… it. Te ves Hermosa, cariño,” he said in between kisses “I think we can stay in just a little bit longer.”

You accepted his kiss gladly and you parted your lips to mingle his tongue with your own, your hands stroking his back up and down, the fabric of his navy-blue polo shirt serving as an unwanted barrier between his touch and your body. He moaned into your mouth as you wrapped your leg around his hip, digging your heel into his backside. His hands instantly sank lower to grab your thigh, and as he settled between your legs, his growing erection made you moan.

Oh, this was going to be a wonderful trip you thought to yourself as you rolled over and straddled his hips and settled yourself on top of him, your eyes on fire as you smiled coyly and lowered the straps of your bathing suit down to reveal your breasts.

“Your right; those drinks can wait,” you said seductively as you smiled and bowed your head to kiss his waiting lips once more.

You leaned slightly over the railing as the yacht slowly progressed through the ocean. Miami beach was at a distance now, and you realized you had Rafael all to yourself out at sea. Except for the captain who was maneuvering the yacht, but he wouldn’t bother you much. Glancing over your shoulder, you caught sight of your shirtless lover wearing his black swimming trunks, sitting alongside the deck with his aviators on as he enjoyed the view of the ocean. He looked beyond delicious, and you smirked as you reached into your bag to retrieve a tube of sunscreen.

“Rafael, will you help me with this?” You placed your black Chanel oversized sunglasses above your head and handed him the sunscreen.

Rafael gave you a smirk as he gladly took tube from your hands and watched as you laid down on your stomach. “Of course.”

Slowly, he untied the string of your white bikini top. His fingers gently grazed your back, sending another shiver of pleasure up your spine. Rafael leaned down and placed a flutter of kisses on your exposed back. You moaned in response at the way his lips lavished attention on your body, sighing contently as you remembered the lovely time you spent together yesterday afternoon in bed before heading out to the pool.

“Your lips feel like bliss against my skin,” you murmured as he quickly placed another kiss on your shoulder. “Now I want to feel your hands,” you commanded seductively, glancing at him over your shoulder.

“Don’t worry; I’ll take care every inch of you,” Rafael whispered into your ear, his hot turning you on even more. You closed your eyes as he pulled back and squeezed the sunscreen onto his hand. With a smack, you heard as him rub his hands together to be able to distribute the sunscreen evenly across your back. His hands glided from your shoulders, to your back, down to your waistline, reaching to the back of your thighs, and down to your legs, and you moaned in the wake of every caress.

Being the tease that he was, Rafael squeezed the back of your thighs and your bottom every now and then, making your moan ring louder, a sultry sound that was music to his ears.

“Mmm... thank you, Counselor,” tou said as he finished lathering your skin. “Tie me back, please.” Your smile was lazy but nonetheless endearing.

Rafael appeared to consider the request for a moment before shaking his head. “No.”

You gasped at his cheekiness. “Rafael Barba, you want me topless?”

“Naturally. Nobody will see you but me. We are out at sea, cariño,” Rafael answered suggestively.

The blood rushed to your cheeks as his words sank in. There was no one else on the deck with you, and by now you were miles away from the shore. Ever the gentleman, Rafael would cover you up immediately if the Captain or any of the crew members approached. This was incredibly risqué, but the suggestion had you on fire, and you obliged him.

“You are sassy…” you said, sitting up slowly and carefully.

“A lesson in tactics, Miss Fashionista.” With a triumphant smirk, Rafael sat back on the lounge chair and patted the spot in front of him for you to sit down. You leaned your bare back against him, savoring the feel of his hands cradling your breasts as you sat together, enjoying the infinite view of the sprawling ocean.

Later that evening, you wanted something completely different. To that end, you made reservations for dinner and dancing at El Tucán, a 1940’s Havana glam inspired club. You were having a wonderful time, enjoying the traditional Cuban dishes that Rafael ordered for you to try. He knew every sweet and savory taste in immense detail, and of course you adored every single bite.

The music was upbeat and fast. Everyone around you had abandoned their dinner for the dance floor.

“Are you ready?” Rafael asked as he took notice of you watching everyone move to the music.

“For what?” You arched your elegant brow in question.

He took one last sip of his drink and pulled you out onto the dance floor without another thought. When his body pressed against yours, you couldn’t help but follow his lead. Yes, you had taken a few classes here and there just for fun back home, but it surely did not match up to Rafael’s classic skills.

His hands gripped your hips as you swayed to the rapid beat of the band, loving the change of scenery and every marvelous moment of Miami. Rafael seemed less worried, livelier. Such a treat to see him carefree and enjoying himself, the getaway easing any lingering woes from his mind.

And just like that, you fell deeper in love with him.

He twirled and caught you quickly. The fabric of your light pink Gucci midi dress was soft against his hands. Smiling, you held onto him as Rafael led you in a back and forth step. He navigated the space like a pro, and you were thankful that you were wearing comfortable heels as you were bound to want to dance the entire night away with him.

By now the young man that was singing on stage had every patron on the dance floor, which only added to the party atmosphere. Rafael held onto you tighter, wrapping his arms around your waist. He managed to steal a kiss from your soft lips before spinning you around once more.

The song escalated, and Rafael dipped you swiftly, gracefully, giving you another kiss. Just as your eyes fluttered open, the song ended to thunderous applause. Your skin glistened with sweat, and you were high on the adrenaline.

“Let’s get out of here,” he said.

“I like the sound of that.”

By the time the two of you reached the beach, Rafael could not take his hands off you and you didn’t want him to let him go.

“And why did you bring me here?” you innocently asked as his hands lowered the thin straps of your dress, his lips on your neck.

“For a swim. Thought we should cool off after all that dancing,” His breath was ragged, but his voice full of so much determination.

“But I don’t have my bikini, and this dress was not cheap, Counselor,” you mildly chastised with a giggle.

He pulled away slightly so you could see the lustful gleam in his eyes. “You don’t need anything and your dress won’t be ruined…”

“Rafael Barba, are you suggesting we go skinny dipping?” You were completely surprised and never would have guessed that Rafael would have been up for such a thing. It had to be the mojitos and the scotch talking.

“Why not? Seems like a good idea,” he said, his voice completely serious.

“You are such a bad influence…”

“Is that a yes?” His eyebrow quirked and he tilted his head with a slight smirk. That damn smirk that always won you over every time.

“Perhaps…” You took a step back from him and unzipped your dress, putting on a show just for him. The beach was empty, and only the stars above illuminated the hot night. He reached out for you immediately, but you raised your hand to stop him.

“No; you have to come and get me…” You could smirk too, and you rushed towards the waves, knowing that that he would strip and follow suit without question.

And when your naked bodies met once again in the ocean’s embrace, you found paradise and wanted to stay in that beautiful state, with him, for the rest of your life.
