A Second Chance, Ch. 15

I feel like I owe each one of you an apology for that last cliffhanger. I hope this chapter makes up for it. â¤ď¸
Pairing: Tamlin x Lucien
Word Count: 7.7k (It's a long one!)
Summary: Tamlin and Lucien have a much needed heart-to-heart
Read on AO3, or read on below:
âAre you sure you donât want me to stick around?â Jurian had asked as Tamlin unfastened his seat belt. âI donât want you to be stranded or anything.â
âIâm sure,â Tamlin had said, not sounding sure at all. âBesides, I donât know how long itâs going to take. I donât want to keep you waiting.â
âDo you even know what youâre going to say?â
Tamlin sighed, curling his fingers around the door handle. âNot yet.â
Jurianâs thumb tapped against the steering wheel as he looked away. âYeah. Me, neither.â
They sat in silence for a long moment, even though it was going to snow soon. The sky was heavy with it. The only question was whether it was going to be the sort of storm you made hot cocoa for before snuggling under the covers with a loved one, or if it was the sort of storm where you prayed that the roads were still open afterwards.
âI hopeâŚâ Tamlin trailed off, because he wasnât quite sure what to hope for. That Vassa would be understanding? That Lucien would hear him out? That they would all live happily ever after?
âYeah,â Jurian sighed, as if he knew what Tamlin was thinking. âMe, too.â
They nodded solemnly at each other before Tamlin gathered the courage to open the door and step out into the cold.
He was braced for a storm⌠He just didnât know what kind it was going to be.
Looking at Lucien now, standing in his apartment, Tamlin still wasnât sure⌠but he could hope.
âCan we talk?â he asked softly.
Lucien looked like he was on the verge of tears, and Tamlin didnât blame him. They hadnât parted under the fondest of circumstances. âYeah,â Lucien squeaked, then cleared his throat. âDo you⌠do you want to sit down, orâŚ?â
Tamlin wet his lips. âIâve been sitting for a while,â he admitted. âI wasnât sure when you were coming back, and I didnât want to assume I was still welcome, soâŚâ
âOf course you are,â Lucien declared, taking a step forward, then flinched back. âIâm sorry,â he said quickly. âIâm sorry for a lot of things. I⌠I shouldnât haveââ
Tamlin stopped him. âItâs okay,â he said quickly, then shook his head. âI mean, not reallyââ He noticed Lucienâs wince. ââBut I know why you did it.â He sighed and shook his head. âIâm just⌠Iâm so fucking scared.â
Lucienâs head jerked back. âYouâre scared? Why?â
Tamlin swallowed hard, then gestured to the chairs. âMaybe we should sit down,â he said hoarsely.
âOkay.â Lucien didnât even stop to take off his coat before joining Tamlin in one of the easy chairs in front of the fire.
While Tamlin appreciated the space, he also missed sharing the same piece of furniture with his boyfriend⌠Come to think of it, were they still boyfriends? Or had he ruined everything by lashing out? It wouldnât be the first time⌠but he couldnât think about that now.
Tamlin took a deep breath, then braced his arms on his knees and wrung his hands and watched the flames dance through the grate.
âIâve been doing a lot of thinking,â he told Lucien quietly. âYou know, about what you said, about your brother taking on my case. Itâs not that I donât want his help, but⌠what if no one believes me?â
âI believe you,â Lucien tried to interject, then apologized for interrupting.
Tamlin nodded sadly. âI know, but⌠Amarantha convinced everyone that I had a mental breakdown. She could spin this story any way she wanted. Maybe I tried drugging her and ended up drugging myself. Or⌠after I met her, I became obsessed, and thatâs why I tried breaking into her house.â
Lucien sucked in a sharp breath through his teeth. âI wonât lie. There is a chance that she could try that. It doesnât mean that it would work, but thatâs just how trials go sometimes. Reasonable doubt, and all that.â
âYou know whatâs worse than that, though?â Tamlin murmured.
âWhat?â
Tamlinâs throat tightened. âWhat if I have a kid?â he whispered. âWhat if Amarantha got exactly what she wanted: A baby with blond hair and green eyes and musical ability and god knows what else. Theyâd be about six years old, now.â
He shook his head, because he could picture it all too well.
âIf I take her to court and I lose, whatâs next? Will she sue me for failing to pay child support?â he went on. âI canât afford that. I can barely afford to take care of myself, and thatâs with Jurianâs helpâŚâ He sighed. âWhat if she wants me to have court-ordered visitation, or even give our kid music lessons? Ugh. Even saying that makes me sick.â
He wiped his mouth. âI never wanted this. But⌠I donât want my kid to feel unwanted, either.â
Lucien gave him a sad look. âDo you have any idea if Amarantha actually has a kid, orâŚ?â
âNo. I made Jurian promise that he would never tell me if he knew, or even let me find out. I mean, Iâve wondered, from time to time, because working for a private investigator makes it so easy, but⌠Honestly, I try not to think about it.â
Lucien just stared at him, and Tamlin dropped his head in shame.
âIt sounds crazy, I know,â he muttered. âI donât even know if this kid exists. I could be getting all worked up over nothing⌠Maybe I have lousy sperm, I donât know.â
âTam.â
The seriousness of Lucienâs tone made him pause. âWhat?â
Lucien cocked his head. âYou donât have lousy sperm. I promise.â He raised his eyebrows and smirked.
Tamlin stared at him, uncomprehending, then when it hit him, he covered his mouth with his hand to smother his snort. âThat wasnât supposed to make me feel better.â
Lucienâs lips still twitched even as he shrugged. âItâs true, though.â
Tamlinâs smile faded, however, and he ran a hand over his hair and rubbed the back of his neck. âThanks, but⌠it doesnât change the fact that Iâm still scared.â
âItâs okay to be scared,â Lucien said gently. âIâd be scared, too.â
Tamlin face grew warm as he stared at the tops of his shoes. âI shouldnât have yelled at you. I know you were just trying to help.â
âPlease. Donât apologizeââ
âNo. I have to,â Tamlin insisted, and lifted his head. âYouâre the best thing thatâs ever happened to me, and I donât want to lose you.â
âTamâŚâ Lucien got up only to get down on his knees in front of Tamlinâs chair. With his big brown eyes gazing up at him and his auburn hair framed by firelight, he looked like a prince from a fairy tale. He placed a gentle hand on Tamlinâs knee. âI told you before, and Iâll tell you again: Iâm not going anywhere.â
Tamlin blinked back sudden tears.
âI should have told you from the start,â Lucien said ruefully. âYou know, about Eris taking on your case. I just thought that⌠Actually, it doesnât matter what I thought. I should have known you werenât ready for this. And you know what? Itâs okay if youâre never ready. Itâs okay to just move on. No matter what you decide, Iâll support you one hundred percent. I promise.â
Tamlin sniffed, and wiped his wet cheek. âYou promise?â
Lucien nodded. âAnd if you need space, Iâll give you that, too. Whatever you want.â
Tamlin managed a deep breath, then took Lucienâs hand as he stood, pulling him to his feet. âI donât want space,â he said quietly.
Lucienâs eyes searched his. He seemed so hopeful that Tamlin wanted to think he was already forgiven, but he had to make sure.
Still, he felt almost⌠shy, holding Lucienâs hand like a gawky teenager instead of the grown man that he was. Even though they had just had hot gay sex just the night before. Embarrassed about what he was about to say next, he dropped his gaze to their joined hands and whispered, âCan⌠can we go back to being boyfriends now?â
âDid you think we werenât?â
Tamlinâs face flushed. âAfter I lost my temper, I wasnât sureâŚâ
Lucien squeezed his fingers. âYou had every right to be mad at me,â he said gently. âAnd yeah, I was worried you never wanted to see me again, but⌠I never stopped wanting to be your boyfriend.â
âNeither did I.â
âGood.â Lucien reached up to tuck Tamlinâs hair behind his ear, then smiled when he met his gaze. âSeven hours apart is nothing,â he teased gently. âLetâs just make sure it doesnât turn into another seven years, okay?â
Tamlin nodded, his throat strangely tight. âOkay.â
Lucien leaned in halfway, then hesitated, but Tamlin knew what he wanted, because he wanted that, too. When he brought his lips to Lucienâs mouth, their kiss was almost chaste in its softness, but it lingered in its longing.
âThank you,â Lucien breathed, as though in prayer.
âFor what,â Tamlin whispered, as though they were in a church.
âFor forgiving me. For keeping secrets from you. I know I shouldnât haveâŚâ
Tamlin sighed, and reluctantly pulled away, but not far enough away to drop Lucienâs hand. âItâs not like I havenât been keeping secrets, too,â he admitted, albeit reluctantly.
Lucienâs lips pursed into a tight smile. âWell, you trusted me with your biggest one, and I went and told my brothers and my mom, soâŚâ
âYou told your mom?â
Lucien winced. âYeah. Alex and I went to see her after⌠after what happened this morning. For what itâs worth,â he added quickly, âsheâs on your side in all this. She thinks Amarantha should rot in hell, if not prison, and she said I shouldnât have done anything behind your back, even if I meant well.â
Tamlin sighed. That was some comfort, at least. âHow is she?â
âMy mom? Sheâs good. Great, actually. Hereââ Lucien dropped his hand to rush for the bags heâd dropped by the door. ââShe made cookies. I hope you like gingerbread. Oh! And I got you another Christmas present. Two of them, actually. Merry Hanukkah, Tam.â
Tamlin took a half-step back as Lucien pressed three bags into his arms.
âThis is all for me?â he said numbly.
âOf course!â
âBut⌠I yelled at youâŚâ
Lucien waved dismissively. âI bought these before that. Then afterwards, I wasnât sure when I would be able to give them to you, so theyâre not wrapped or anythingââ
âLuâŚâ
ââI hope you donât mind. I still haveâletâs seeâfive gifts left to give you. Four, if you count the cookiesââ
âLucien.â
Lucien stopped, startled. âWhat?â
Tamlin gave him a wincing smile. âYou donât have to do this.â
Lucienâs shoulders slumped a bit. âBut I want to. Youâre so special to me⌠I just want to show you how I feelâŚâ
Tamlinâs face flushed in shame. âI just⌠I donât deserve it.â
âSure you doââ
âNo. I donât.â
Lucien looked truly confused, and somewhat hurt, too. âWhy not?â
Tamlin took a deep breath, then gently set his gifts on the chair behind him. âItâs not that I donât appreciate what youâve done,â he said slowly, then wrung his hands. âI told you I had secrets, but what happened seven years ago is only part of it.â
Lucienâs eyes widened. âThereâs more?â
Tamlin raised a shoulder and let it fall. âI think Iâm the reason your last boyfriend broke up with you.â
Lucien looked at him askance. âHuh?â
âWell, you know I work for a private eye, right?â
âYeah⌠And?â
Tamlin took a deep breath. âSo about three years ago, your dad hired Jurian to take pictures of some woman who was dating one of his sons.â He made air quotes with his fingers. ââJesminda.â I didnât know she was a drag queen. He? I donât know. I just know that I didnât want to be involved, because I knew you, or at least I used to, and I just couldnât face you. Even if you never saw me.â
Lucienâs brows furrowed as he crossed his arms, but he remained silent.
Tamlin had to finish his story, and quickly. âAnyway, I made Jurian do it alone, which he was pretty pissed about, but it was made worse by the fact that your dad never paid up, because the woman wasnât actually a woman. I thought it must have been a case of mistaken identity or something, which pissed Jurian off even more because heâs actually good at what he does⌠but by then it was too late. I didnât realize Jessie and Jesminda were the same person until you told me on Saturday.â
Lucienâs eyes narrowed. âSo our breakup is your fault⌠how?â
Tamlin blinked in surprise. âWell⌠I thought thatââ
âThat if you had taken Jessieâs pictures instead, my dad wouldnât have realized his secret identity?â Lucien snorted. âYeah, my dad was pissed about me dating a drag queen, but he didnât cut me off because Iâm gay. He cut me off because of how much I was spending on my boyfriend.â
âOh.â
Lucien shrugged. âThat doesnât mean he approves of me being gay. Itâd be a pretty bad look for the CEO of a major corporation to publicly come out against his gay son, when the company is all about family, so this was his secret way of punishing me.â
Tamlin winced. âIâm sorry.â
âYou donât have to be.â Lucien shrugged again and looked away. âBesides, Jessie could have stuck around if he wanted to, but he didnât. And thatâs not your fault, either.â
Tamlin sighed. At least that was one less thing to worry about, even if it was unfortunate.
âIs that all?â
âIs what all?â
Lucien smiled a sad half-smile. âThe last of your terrible secrets? You havenât scared me away yet, you know.â
Tamlin blew out his cheeks. âWell, there is one more,â he said hesitantly.
Lucien huffed a laugh and shook his head at the ceiling. âAll right, big guy,â he said wryly. âHit me with your best shot.â
âIâm serious.â
Lucienâs amused smile faded. âOkay.â
Tamlin took a deep breath. âItâs about Vassa.â
Lucien straightened. âWhat about Vassa?â
Tamlinâs heart skipped a beat. This might be the moment where he lost Lucien forever. âThat day in the bookstore⌠I was doing surveillance.â
âOkayâŚâ
âI didnât know you were Vassaâs friend,â Tamlin said quickly. âI was just supposed to verify that a woman matching Vassaâs description was here in Prythian. We were hired to take pictures and send them back to some guy in Scythia. I donât even know what he wanted with them, and it wasnât my job to find out. But the second I saw you, I knew I couldnât go through with it.â
âBecause I was Vassaâs friend,â Lucien repeated flatly.
âYeah,â Tamlin said, and his hopes for forgiveness wilted.
Lucien breathed out a heavy sigh, then turned and ran a hand over his hair. âThis is not good.â
âI know.â
âDoes Vassa know?â
Tamlin lifted his palms, then let them fall. âJurian dropped me off before driving out to Vassaâs hotel. He was going to tell her tonight.â
âThat heâs been spying on her?â
âNo,â Tamlin said firmly. âHe went to tell her that he wonât be spying on her. He turned down the job. This Koschei guy was willing to pay through the nose for those photos, and Jurian refused.â
âHe did?â
âYeah. We really could have used the money, too.â
Lucien looked skeptical. âAll for a few lousy photos?â
âWell, not just any photos,â Tamlin said, somewhat defensively. âPhotos of Vassa.â
âDoing what, exactly?â
Tamlin shrugged. âI donât know. Just photos of her standing on the street. Proof that she was in Prythian, I guess.â
âSo, not like⌠nudeâŚ?â
Tamlin made a face. âNo. Of course not. We donât do stuff like that.â
âOh.â Lucien scratched at his scar, looking pink, then he dropped his hand with a sigh. âWhy didnât you tell me before?â
âBecause it sounds terrible,â Tamlin declared. âThe only reason I was in the bookstore that day was to do a job. And I couldnât exactly tell you why I was there when the target was standing right next to you.â
âThe target being Vassa⌠Not me.â
Tamlin shoved his hands into his pockets. âYeah.â
Lucien blew out his cheeks and tiredly ran a hand over his hair. âI hate to say it, but Iâm actually kind of disappointed,â he said with a sad chuckle.
Tamlinâs shoulders slumped. âI was afraid you would be.â
âDonât get me wrong. I am disappointed that you felt like you had to keep all of this a secret, but⌠Iâm more disappointed that you werenât there for me.â
Tamlin smiled sadly. âI kind of was, though.â
âOh?â
Tamlin shrugged. âI hung around a lot longer than I was supposed to. It was so nice hearing your voice⌠Watching you choose books with Vassa⌠I kind of thought she was your girlfriend, at first.â
Lucien snorted, and tried to hide his smile behind his hand. âSorry. But youâre not a very good detective, are you?â
Tamlinâs face turned warm. âI never said I was. Jurianâs the detective, not me.â
Lucienâs amused smile faded. âSo, you really stuck around⌠for me?â
Tamlin nodded. âYeah. I donât think I would have had the courage to say anything before you left, but⌠I wanted to. I was surprised at how badly I wanted to.â
âWhat did you want to say?â
Tamlin gestured back and forth. ââHey.â âHowâs it going?â âGood to see you.â âHow have you been?â âItâs been a long timeââŚâ He took a deep breath and dropped his hands. ââI missed you.ââ
Lucienâs eyes glistened. âGod knows how much I missed you.â
Tamlin managed a smile, though it was a teary one. âI wish I could have told you⌠under different circumstances.â
Lucien nodded sadly. âMe, too,â he murmured, then took a deep breath. âSo, really? Youâre not going to turn in Vassaâs photos?â
âWe never took any.â
âGood. Thatâs good.â Lucien nodded distractedly. âNow, what did you say that guyâs name was? Koschei?â
âYeah, Koschei. Why? Do you know him?â
âNo. Vassa just told me she was on the run from some pretty bad guys, and she needed a quiet place to stay and lay low for a while.â
Tamlin blanched. âSheâs on the run? Really?â
Lucien nodded grimly. âShe didnât want to tell me, but I did ask. You know how nosy I am.â
Tamlin winced. âYou were just being a good friend.â
âA good friend wouldnât have asked in the first place,â Lucien countered, then he sighed. âAnyway, I donât know all the details, but sheâs safe now. Sheâs staying in a hotel under my name until she can find more permanent arrangements. Itâs the least I could do, since we knew each other from before.â
âWhen she drank you under the table back in college,â Tamlin remembered.
Lucien rolled his eyes skyward before pinching the bridge of his nose. âI am going to kill Alex for telling you that,â he muttered.
Tamlin bit back a chuckle, then his smile faded. âI didnât know you and Vassa were so close,â he said softly. âIâm sorry I didnât tell you about the job, but⌠I couldnât. Besides, she was just a name on a piece of paper to me, back then. Sheâs not now, obviously, but for all I knew, this guy Koschei just wanted to find her so that he could get his stuff back. You know, like a bad breakup. Who gets to keep the hoodie, and all that.â
Lucien cocked his head. âA hoodie? Really?â
Tamlin spread his hands wide. âYou would not believe some of the things people try to hire us for. It gets weird.â
Lucien breathed a laugh, then sighed and shook his head. âI guess I canât blame you for trying to do your job,â he said quietly.
âIt was just a job,â Tamlin agreed. âUntil it wasnât.â
Lucien nodded, looking thoughtful. âI guess it all worked out in the end, anyway,â he mused. âOut of all the private eyes in the city, Koschei picked the ones who actually have a conscience.â
âHey, weâre not all sleazy,â Tamlin joked, then grew serious. âJurian really does care for her, you know. In case you were wondering.â
âI didnât wonder,â Lucien said gently. âBut you know, if nothing else, Iâm glad she has someone else to talk to. Scythian isnât the most common language around here.â
âThatâs why Koschei hired us,â Tamlin agreed. âWell, he hired Jurian, I mean. Iâm just the assistant.â
Lucien smirked. âHis cute assistant.â
Tamlin blushed and rubbed the back of his neck. âKoschei doesnât know what I look like.â
âThatâs too bad,â Lucien teased. âYou might get a lot more business if people knew what a good-looking guy you are⌠Then again, maybe itâs better that they donât.â
Tamlin blushed deeper, though he smiled. âYeah, it kinda defeats the purpose of being a private eye, otherwise.â
âYeah,â Lucien murmured.
They stood in silence for a moment, listening to the crackle of the flames, but it was not an uncomfortable silence.
âYou know,â Tamlin mused. âIf it hadnât been for this job, I never would have gone into that bookstore that day. Who knows when we might have seen each other again?â
âI mean, you had the chance three years ago, when I was with Jessie,â Lucien began, then stopped himself. âBut you werenât ready to see me, yet⌠I guess.â
âAnd you were dating someone else,â Tamlin reminded him.
Lucien nodded and stuffed his hands into his coat pockets. âYeah, I was,â he murmured.
The silence was not as comfortable this time.
After a long pause, Tamlin offered shyly, âIf it had to happen, Iâm kind of glad it happened this way. Even if Koschei was responsible for making it happen.â
Lucien nodded slowly. âHow about we give Vassa the credit for this one,â he said thoughtfully. âWhen we tell people the story of how we met, and met again, letâs just say itâs because of Vassa.â
Tamlinâs head jerked back in surprise. âYou want to tell people the story of how we met?â
Lucien smiled. âOf course. Isnât that what boyfriends do?â
Suddenly overwhelmed with emotion, Tamlin threw his arms around Lucien and held him tight.
âWhoa. Hey,â Lucien said with a surprised chuckle. âYou okay, there, Tam?â
Tamlin nodded and buried his face in his boyfriendâs shoulder as Lucienâs arms slid around him. âI didnât think youâd ever forgive me for this,â he mumbled. âThatâs why I didnât want to tell you.â
Lucien gave him a firm squeeze, then pulled away to look into his eyes. âThereâs nothing to forgive,â he said kindly. âYou were just doing your job. And, hey, at least no one got hurt.â
âYeah, Iâm really glad about that,â Tamlin said, relaxing at last. âJurian even found someone else who wants to look into this whole Koschei business. But donât tell anyone,â he added, wincing.
Lucien merely chuckled, and his eyes twinkled. âDonât worry. I wonât,â he promised, then stepped back and gently poked him. âBut speaking of secrets, do you have anything else you want to get off your chest? Because now would be the time.â
Tamlin huffed a laugh. âIâm pretty sure thatâs everything.â
âAre you sure?â Lucien teased. âYou didnât forget that youâre secretly a werewolf or something, did you?â
Tamlin blushed. âI guess youâll have to wait until the full moon to find out,â he said shyly.
Lucienâs eyebrows rose at his playfulness. âThatâs this weekend!â he remarked. âHow do you expect me to sleep until then?â
Tamlin ducked his head to try to hide his grin, but failed. âIf you have silver, I think youâll be safe.â
âMm, I much prefer gold,â Lucien said with a wink. âBut they say that music will tame the savage beast, soââ He reached behind Tamlin for the shopping bags. ââhow about a song, maestro?â
Bemusedly, Tamlin accepted the bags and reached inside. âNew strings,â he murmured in awe. âAnd rosin.â He unscrewed the cap and breathed in the sweetly familiar scent. âOh, it smells like a Christmas tree,â he sighed.
âIt does?â Lucien dipped his nose toward the small container, then made a face as he jerked away. âIf you say so.â
Tamlin chuckled. âI mean, I wouldnât wear it as cologne or anythingâŚâ
âThank god,â Lucien muttered, rubbing his nose.
Tamlin grinned. âBut I like it. Thank you.â
âYouâre welcome,â Lucien said, smiling back. âJust let me know if you need anything else for your violin, okay? If Iâm going to survive until this weekend, I need to keep you happy.â
âI am happy,â Tamlin said warmly. He set his gifts aside and dusted off his hands and looked at the tree. Their tree. âI canât remember a better Christmas,â he murmured. âNot since my mom died.â
âWell, Christmas isnât here yet, and weâve still got Hanukkah,â Lucien said, trying to keep his voice light, but Tamlin could tell he was truly touched. âIâm glad I get to spend it with you.â
âMe, too.â
They stood in companionable silence for a moment, until Lucien loosened the top button of his coat. âSoâŚâ
âSo,â Tamlin echoed.
As Lucien worked his way down the buttons, he asked, âWhat do you want to do now?â
Tamlin shrugged. âI donât know,â he said honestly. âI wasnât sure what was going to happen tonight. I knew I could always get a cab if things didnât work out, butâŚâ
âBut they did,â Lucien pointed out.
âYeah, they did,â Tamlin said with a relieved smile.
âSo, itâs just going to be us tonight?â Lucien said, finally shrugging off his coat.
Tamlin found himself blushing again. âYeah. I mean, unless you think another one of your brothers is going to drop by,â he said shyly.
âOh, god, I hope not,â Lucien moaned, walking to the closet. âI love them, but I have plans tonight, thank you very much,â he declared, hanging up his coat.
Tamlin blinked. âOh, you do?â
âYep.â Lucien closed the closet door with a flourish, then leaned against it. âAnd they all start with You.â
ââUâ as in underwear, orâŚ?â
Lucien laughed as Tamlin realized his mistake, and stepped forward. âGod, I love you.â
Tamlinâs breath caught and Lucien paused as they both realized what he had just admitted, but Lucien laughed it off.
âYou know,â Lucien added quickly, scratching at his scar. âThe Scythian way.â
Tamlin nodded. He was blushing so hard, he had broken into a sweat. Or maybe it was because he was standing too close to the fireplace. Not that he was willing to move away. Not now. âCome here,â he told Lucien softly, nodding him over.
Looking almost shy, his boyfriend crossed the room to join him.
âI want to tell you something,â Tamlin said, feeling shy himself.
âMore secrets?â Lucien said teasingly, but he was blushing. He was actually blushing.
Tamlin nodded. âJust one more.â
âOkay,â Lucien said softly. He seemed to be quivering.
Tamlin took a deep breath, then he smiled. âI love you, too.â
Lucienâs lips parted in surprise.
When he didnât speak, Tamlin added, âYou know, the Prythian way,â only half-teasing.
Lucien smiled slowly, but it was a pleased smile. âIs that different from the Scythian way?â he teased back.
Tamlin tried, but he couldnât contain his grin. âVery.â
âHow so?â
Tamlin wet his lips. âWell, for one thingâŚâ he said, then slipped his hand around Lucienâs neck and kissed him. Lucienâs hands slid around Tamlinâs waist and pulled him closer, leaving Tamlinâs hands free to slide through Lucienâs hair as he kissed him, and then kissed him again.
Lucienâs breath was hot against his mouth when they parted. âI think I like the Prythian way,â he murmured, breathing hard. âIt leaves no room for interpretation.â
âYeah,â Tamlin agreed, breathing hard himself. âI think so, too.â
Lucienâs hands clung to Tamlinâs sweater as he sighed, then he pressed his forehead against Tamlinâs. âI want to say it back, but I donât want to sound like Iâm just saying it back,â he whispered.
âItâs okay,â Tamlin tried to say, but Lucien pulled away to shake his head.
âNo. I mean it,â he said. His eyes shone bright in the firelight. âIâve loved you for a long time. I think I always have. And even if you donât want me to, I think I always will.â
Tamlin cradled Lucienâs face between his hands, and stroked his cheeks with his thumbs. âNow Iâm the one who doesnât want to sound like Iâm just saying it back,â he said with a shy laugh, trying to keep his emotions under control.
Lucien wrapped his hands around Tamlinâs wrists and simply smiled, but he looked like he was trying to hold back tears, too.
Tamlin swallowed. âSo, how do you say âMe, tooâ in Scythian?â
Lucien laughed tearily, then grabbed Tamlinâs face and kissed him. Between kisses, Lucien taught him the proper phrase, then kissed him again when he got it right.
âNot bad,â Lucien teased when they parted.
Tamlin blushed. âWhat can I say? I had a pretty good teacher.â
Lucien grinned, then wrapped his arms around him and kissed him again.
Youâre amazing.
I love you, and I always will.
Me, too.
* * *
Lucien was too contented to move. Not that he wanted to.
His head was resting against Tamlinâs bare chest, and rising and falling with each slow, steady breath. Tamlinâs fingers were lazily curling the ends of his hair, and he could hear the gentle thumping of his boyfriendâs heartbeat right below his ear.
There was another movie about dinosaurs eating people playing on TV, but the volume was on low. Since theyâd already missed the first half, he wasnât paying close attention.
Then, his stomach rumbled again, and Tamlin must have heard it this time, because he chuckled.
âWas that you, or the TV?â he murmured, still stroking Lucienâs hair.
Lucien reluctantly lifted his head to look into his boyfriendâs eyes. âThat was me,â he said in a lazy drawl, then smirked. âYou hungry?â
âYeah, I could eat,â Tamlin mused, then moved his fingers to brush a stray hair from Lucienâs forehead. His thumbnail gently traced the scar above Lucienâs eyebrow.
Lucien rested his chin against Tamlinâs chest. âWhat?â
Tamlin slowly shook his head, looking thoughtful. âJust⌠thinking about luck, I guess.â
âYeah. Me, too,â Lucien murmured, then pressed a firm kiss against Tamlinâs sternum. âSit tight. Iâll be back with some sustenance shortly.â
Tamlin sighed as he pulled away, then tucked his arm beneath his head as he watched Lucien reach for his pajama bottoms. âHey, arenât those mine?â
Lucien chuckled. âYeah,â he said, fastening the top button with a playful smirk. âI could wear mine, but⌠yours were closer.â
Tamlin smiled as Lucien slipped his arms into the unbuttoned pajama shirt. âGreen looks good on you,â he observed. âMaybe I should get you a matching set for Christmas.â
Lucien grinned, then braced his hands on the mattress to lean in. âDidnât I ever tell you?â he said softly. âI donât wear pajamas.â
Tamlinâs bemused smile turned slack in shock. âWhat?â
Lucien chuckled, then kissed the corner of his stunned mouth. âYou were so shy when you first spent the night, I didnât want to scare you away,â he explained playfully, then straightened to button the center button. He flicked up his eyebrows. âBut I always sleep naked.â
He left Tamlin lying speechless on the bed while he laughed his way into the living room.
By the time his bare feet hit the cold kitchen tile, though, his thoughts had already turned to food. He opened the refrigerator door and squinted against the cool white light, but it illuminated little in the way of leftovers. There was still some of Tamlinâs homemade chicken soup left, but that wasnât the sort of food to take to bed. There were some ingredients, like eggs, blueberries, milk⌠Hmm. Alex hadnât eaten all of the pancakes, so at least that was an option⌠albeit a sticky one. Not entirely out of the question, thoughâŚ
âFind anything good?â Tamlin called out as he walked into the living room.
âMm, maybe,â Lucien called back, frowning.
Distantly, something crinkled, then Tamlinâs voice came closer. âHow about these?â
Lucienâs eyes took a moment to adjust as Tamlin stepped into the dim kitchen. Something crinkled again, something cellophane, and Lucien straightened with a smile.
âOh, yeah! My momâs gingerbread cookies,â he remembered happily, and began to close the refrigerator door. âThose are perfectâly hot. What are you wearing?â
The cool light revealed Tamlinâs shy smirk as he gestured to himself. âI thought it was only fair.â
âFair?â Lucien echoed, looking him over. He was wearing Lucienâs gray sweatpants, and a snug white tank top that clung to his defined pecs and showed off his muscular arms. âI donât think itâs fair that you look better in my clothes than I do,â he complained.
Tamlin chuckled and lightly tossed the bag of cookies up in the air. âYou want me to take them off?â
âNot yet,â Lucien said, drinking in the sight of him.
Tamlin stepped closer, still smiling. âYouâre letting all the cold air out, you know,â he murmured.
âI know,â Lucien said in a low voice. âBut Iâll pay the bill if it means keeping my wits about you. Iâm starving.â
Tamlin chuckled. âHere,â he said, handing him the bag. âHave a cookie. Let me take a look.â
Lucien accepted it without a word, and mindlessly removed the colorful ribbon as Tamlin bent down to look inside the refrigerator.
âHmm. You really donât eat in much, do you?â
âI donât cook much,â Lucien reminded him, taking a bite of spiced gingerbread as he tilted his head and admired the way the tank top clung to his boyfriendâs muscular form.
âAll you really need is a good loaf of bread and some great condiments,â Tamlin said, straightening. âButter. Jam. Cheese. PicklesâŚâ
Lucien grimaced as he swallowed. âNot in the same sandwich, I hope.â
Tamlin chuckled again, and tucked his loose hair behind his ear. âNo. But sometimes itâs nice to have something with your coffee in the morning.â
âMmm. Pickles and coffee. My favorite.â
Tamlin rolled his eyes. âYouâre such an ass,â he snorted, then closed the refrigerator door, plunging them into darkness. âSorry.â
âDonât be. I know I am,â Lucien said as Tamlin reopened the refrigerator.
âI meant the lights.â
âOh, so, Iâm not an ass?â
âOh, no. You still are,â Tamlin said, smirking.
âYouâre so romantic.â
Tamlin snorted again. âIf I were really romantic, Iâd light some candles, but I guess the overhead light will have to do.â He moved away from the open refrigerator door. âThereâs a switch around here somewhereâŚâ
âDonât. Iâll go blind,â Lucien begged, then pressed the cookie bag against Tamlinâs chest as he stumbled over to the stove. Click. Soft, warm light illuminated the marble countertops without flooding the entire room. âThere,â he said, smiling in relief. âThat will do until I can rustle up some proper candles,â he joked.
Tamlin closed the refrigerator door without commenting. His head was bent over the open bag to inhale the fragrant scent of fresh gingerbread cookies. âI canât remember the last time I had some of these,â he murmured.
Lucien nibbled on his own cookie as he walked over to join him. âYou can have the rest of them, if you want,â he offered. âI know my mom would be happy to make some more for you. Itâs kind of her thing.â
Tamlin smiled wistfully, then shook his head and held out the bag. âIâd rather share. I donât want you to starve, after all.â His eyes twinkled.
Lucien smirked. âNow I remember why I came in here,â he teased, and took another cookie. âSustenance.â
He was pleased to see a warm blush steal across Tamlinâs cheeks, even in the dim light.
As Tamlin took a cookie for himself, he murmured, âIs it always going to be like this?â
âWhat?â
Tamlin took a small bite before answering. âYou know,â he said shyly. âThe sex. The snacks. The jokes afterwards.â
âI hope so,â Lucien said honestly, and wiped the crumbs from his mouth. âBecause thereâs no one else Iâd rather have snacks with in the middle of the night⌠Even if you do look better in my pajamas than I do.â
Tamlin chuckled. âYou donât wear pajamas, remember?â he teased.
Lucienâs eyebrows rose. âYouâre right. I donât.â He unbuttoned the single button, then shrugged off the satin shirt as Tamlin watched him with widening eyes. He shivered but tried to hide it as he set the shirt on the nearby counter, then placed his hands on his hips. âAll right,â he declared, tossing his head to shake the loose hair from his eyes. âYour turn.â
Tamlinâs gaze had been slowly traveling downwards, then he snapped to attention. âMe?â
Lucien put on a brave smirk. âItâs only fair.â
Tamlin looked at him askance, but at least he smiled. âI didnât ask you to take off your shirt.â
âItâs your shirt,â Lucien countered. âBesides,â he added, gesturing to the room. âAre you really going to leave me standing around half-naked in a cold, dark kitchen all by myself?â
Tamlinâs bemused smile grew wider. âYouâre serious.â
âAbout sex? Absolutely.â
Tamlin pointed at the floor. âRight here?â
âRight now. If you want to,â Lucien added quickly.
Tamlin bit his lip as he considered this. âOkay.â
Lucienâs insides suddenly fluttered as he watched Tamlin set aside the bag to reach for the hem of his tank top. In one smooth, easy motion, he peeled it up and over his head. He shook his long blond hair free, then let out a quivering breath as he set the garment aside.
âItâs, uh, kind of cold in here,â he said softly. Shyly.
âYeah,â Lucien breathed. Tamlinâs nipples were already hard and erect, as were his own. As were other things.
They were each clad in a single bottom layer, which Lucien was acutely aware of as Tamlin came closer. âItâs your turn,â he murmured.
âI guess it is,â Lucien whispered, sliding one arm around Tamlinâs waist as he backed them up against the counter. The cold marble bit into the bare flesh of his hip, and he flinched away. âUmâŚâ
âOh. Maybe if we, uhâŚâ
âYeah. Thereâs a towel in that drawer if you want to⌠umâŚâ
âDid you want to turn around, or kneel down, orâŚ?â
They both glanced at the pathetically small rug at their feet, then burst out laughing. As they clung to each other for support, Lucien was glad to feel how blissfully warm Tamlinâs chest was against his own.
He ran his hands down the muscles of Tamlinâs back and sighed. âMaybe sex on the kitchen floor in the middle of December wasnât such a hot idea,â he mused, then kissed Tamlinâs shoulder.
âMaybe not,â Tamlin murmured. âBut I hear sex by the fireplace can be pretty hot.â His lips grazed Lucienâs ear.
âMmm⌠I hear bed sex is pretty hot, too,â Lucien murmured, trailing slow, lazy kisses up Tamlinâs neck.
Tamlin turned his head to look into his eyes, then his gaze drifted down to Lucienâs mouth. âAs long as itâs with you, anywhere will do,â he said, then kissed him. Flecks of spice still clung to his lips.
When they parted, Lucien let out a rough exhale. âAnywhere?â
âAnywhere.â
They never did make it to the fireplace. Or the bed, for that matter. With their pants pooled around their ankles on the cold tile floor, it made it hard to walk very far. Not that they needed to.
âI take it back,â Lucien panted, bracing his sweat-slicked arms against the cool marble countertop. âThat was pretty fucking hot.â
âYeah.â Tamlinâs breathing in his ear was as ragged as his own.
Lucien let out a weak chuckle when he didnât continue. âYouâre so poetic.â
âIâll write you a limerick next time,â Tamlin said, then pressed his lips against Lucienâs shoulder. âThat was intense.â
âYouâre telling me,â Lucien agreed breathlessly, then turned to face him. âThat was⌠wow.â
Tamlin braced his hands on either side of him. âNow whoâs poetic?â he teased, still breathing hard.
âRoses are red, violets are blue,â Lucien quipped, then slipped his hands around his neck and kissed him.
âMm. Thatâs not a limerick, but it will do,â Tamlin finished, smiling.
Lucien gave him a bemused smile. âHey, that was pretty good.â
âGive me a minute to think of something that rhymes with âgoodâ, and Iâll keep going,â Tamlin said, sighing as he stepped out of his fallen clothes, then pushed himself away to go to the sink. After washing his hands, he brought a towel to Lucien. âHere. For your manhood,â he said, half-joking, which made Lucien laugh.
âGod, youâre good to me,â Lucien said as Tamlin began cleaning him up.
âNot as good as you are to me,â Tamlin said softly. His words were as gentle as his touch.
Lucienâs chest suddenly tightened with emotion. âHere. Hand me another towel,â he rasped. âLet me do you.â
âOh, um⌠That was the last one,â Tamlin said regretfully. âMaybe this would be easier in the shower,â he suggested.
âYeah, maybe,â Lucien said, freeing his ankles from the confines of Tamlinâs pants, but he stayed where he was. âIâve been meaning to buy more towels anyway, but I never had a good reason.â
Tamlin said nothing, but continued gently wiping the single warm towel against Lucienâs bare skin.
Lucien took a deep, though trembling breath. âI need to buy a new rug, too. Maybe one of those thick foam ones that are good for your feet. Would you like that?â
Tamlin nodded slowly. âThat would be nice.â
âAnd matching aprons,â Lucien continued. âAnd good bread, and⌠and condimentsâŚâ
Tamlin chuckled and moved away to rinse the cloth in the sink. âYou make it sound almost kinky.â
âI didnât mean to,â Lucien said ruefully, watching Tamlin wring out the cloth. âI just want the kitchen to feel like itâs yours as much as it does mine.â
Tamlin paused and smiled bemusedly. âWhat do you mean?â
Lucienâs tongue felt strangely thick, but he somehow managed to say, âI want you to move in with me.â
Tamlin stared at him. âWhat?â
âYou and me⌠I want us to live together.â
Tamlin was so stunned, he dropped the cloth in the sink. âYou mean, like⌠all the time?â
âYeah,â Lucien said, suddenly feeling shy, and not just because he was naked. âI mean, if you want to.â
Tamlin looked truly taken aback as his hand drifted to his neck, as if he, too, were suddenly and acutely aware of being naked in the middle of the kitchen. At least they were on the same footing, in that regard.
âWell? Do you want to?â Lucien asked hesitantly.
Tamlin laughed in amazement and rubbed the back of his neck. âI just canât believe that⌠Wow. You really want me to move in? Just like that?â
Lucien shrugged. âI mean, it will probably take a few days to get you settled, but⌠yeah.â
âEven though we just had sex?â
âEspecially because we just had sex,â Lucien said, half-teasing. âWhy? Do you think Iâll change my mind?â
Tamlin bit his lip. It was clear that was exactly what he thought. âItâs just⌠what if we fight again?â
âThen Iâll sleep on the couch,â Lucien quipped.
Tamlin laughed, then shyly dropped his gaze to massage his palms. When he didnât speak, Lucien moved closer.
âHey,â he said gently. âIf itâs too soon, you can tell me. I know most people wait six months or more until they move in together⌠But you and me, weâre not like most people. We first moved in together before we knew each otherâs first names, remember?â
That made Tamlin chuckle, which made Lucien smile.
âIf you want to wait, Iâm okay with that,â he said softly. âWhen youâre ready, Iâll be here.â
Tamlin met his gaze. âOkay.â
Lucienâs heart skipped a beat. âOkay?â
Tamlin nodded. âYeah. Okay. Yes. Or whatever it is you say to a proposal like that. To move in together, I mean,â he said, blushing.
Lucien smiled a slow, hopeful smile. âYou mean it?â
âI do.â
Lucien grinned, then seized Tamlinâs face and kissed him. âI love you,â he said between kisses.
âI love you,â Tamlin echoed in Scythian.
As their mouths rejoined, their arms slid around each other and closed the gap between them. Tamlinâs skin was cool to the touch from standing in the open kitchen for so long, something Lucien intended to remedy, and soon.
âSomething tells me weâre not going to get any sleep tonight,â Lucien said as they slowly made their way into the living room.
âSomething tells me youâre right,â Tamlin murmured. He paused when their feet touched the carpet. âI think I feel something coming on. I better call off work tomorrow.â
âGood idea. Then we can finally play Doctor.â
Tamlin chuckled. âI guess itâs a good thing I made chicken soup.â
Lucien grinned. âItâs a very good thing. You know, Iâm starting to feel a little feverish myself.â
âOh, no. Whatâs the remedy for that?â
Lucien pulled him close. âA hot shower and lots of bed rest.â
âMm⌠I donât know how much rest weâll get, but that sounds pretty good to me.â
Lucien smiled as he leaned in. âMe, too.â
When they parted, Tamlin whispered, âHey, Doc?â
âHmm?â
âDo you think Iâll be feeling better by this weekend? Iâve actually got plans, soâŚâ
Lucien blinked. âOh⌠You do?â
There was a smile in Tamlinâs voice when he replied, âYeah. Iâm moving in with my boyfriend.â
Lucien kissed him again. He couldnât help it. âIâll make sure youâre all better,â he murmured. âBut Iâll get you some silver, too, just to be safe.â
âSilver? Why?â
âJust in case you turn into a werewolf.â
Tamlin pulled away and sighed and shook his head. âSomething tells me youâd be into that.â
âSomething tells me youâre absolutely right,â Lucien declared, then led his boyfriend into the bedroom.

Jeffrey Gibson is first Indigenous artist with U.S. solo show at Venice Biennale : NPR
The U.S. State Department has selected an Indigenous artist to represent the country at the 2024 Venice Biennale.
Jeffrey Gibson, a member of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, will be the first such artist to have a solo exhibition in the U.S. Pavilion at the prestigious international arts event.
That's according to a statement this week from the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the government body responsible for co-curating the U.S. Pavilion, alongside Oregon's Portland Art Museum and SITE Santa Fe in New Mexico.
The State Department's records of the U.S. Pavilion exhibitions date back to when it was built, in 1930.
Although Indigenous artists have shown work more broadly in Venice over the years, the last time Indigenous artists appeared in the U.S. Pavilion at the Biennale was in 1932 â and that was in a group setting, as part of a mostly Eurocentric exhibition devoted to depictions of the American West. ...

Expertise can't help you here.
#dungeon meshi#kabru#laios touden#falin touden#Happy Thistle Thursday once again. Have I been holding on to this comic for several weeks? Sure have!#I forgot how long it takes for Chimera Falin to come into play.#I still really love my 'better drawn' art of her - unfortunately it was several weeks too early for the anime only folks.#Slowly getting the hang of drawing Laios. I don't know why I struggle so much but I am getting...somewhere.#Meta time: God damn I love how the chimera shows off the expertise and gap between Kabru and Laios.#The truth is: they are both *right* and they are both *wrong*.#This creature is a combination of monster and human and they only have the skillset to deal with one of those.#Kabru goes for all the human vitals - but she isn't human.#Laios tries to approach her as a monster and is struck down by the humanity he sees in her.#She is something new that defies what they *both* understand about the world. And that makes her such a perfect antagonist.#The damsel was the dragon all along!#...She is really so cute though. Terrifying! But adorable. I am so excited to see the boom of fanart for her.

Detroitâs City Council, responding to a clarion call from the community and unsettling findings from a University of Chicago study, has unanimously passed two landmark resolutions aimed at halting foreclosures and correcting property assessments for homes valued under $34,700. This decisive action comes amid the backdrop of opposition from the Duggan administration, highlighting the Councilâs commitment to addressing systemic injustices in the cityâs property tax system.
The first resolution mandates Detroit City Assessor Alvin Horhn to slash assessments for these homes by 30 percent, a significant step towards rectifying the chronic issue of overvaluation that has burdened many Detroit homeowners. The second resolution urges Wayne County Treasurer Eric Sabree to suspend all foreclosures on owner-occupied homes falling within the same value bracket, offering a lifeline to residents at risk of losing their homes due to inflated tax bills.
The passage of these resolutions, a direct outcome of the relentless advocacy by the Coalition for Property Tax Justice, marks a critical movement in Detroitâs ongoing struggle with property tax fairness. The Coalition for Property Tax Justice is like a powerhouse team, bringing together more than fifteen community-rooted groups all focused on one big goal: putting an end to unfairly high property taxes and the wave of tax foreclosures that have been hitting Detroit hard.
Bernadette Atuahene, a key figure in this movement, lauded the Councilâs decision, stating, âThe City Council finally acknowledged the continued over assessments and unanimously demanded that the Duggan administration and the County Treasurer take action to correct the ongoing property tax injustice. Now Treasurer Sabree and the Duggan administration must follow these resolutions with action.â
But the resolutionsâ success hinges on the actions of County Treasurer Eric Sabree and City Assessor Alvin Horhn. The question now is, will they heed the Councilâs directive and address these pressing issues, or will they allow the cycle of illegal foreclosures and assessments to persist? ...
