@forthegothicheroine - the ask got deleted in a wild mishap, but here are the Which books I’d recommend to various Batman Villains! (thank you so much for this btw -- absolutely juicy question and I had a thrill imagining any scenario where I’d be in such a position as to be recommending them things!
Harley Quinn - Fingersmith by Sarah Waters, naturally! Things not appearing what they seem, the plot twists, the self-reclamation, the romance, overcoming abuse - I think she’d really enjoy it! Conversely, I think Zola’s Thérèse Raquin would speak to her and maybe help her process some things regarding her bad patterns in criminal relationships.
Poison Ivy - Gotta keep with the plants theme and give her The Weeds by Katy Simpson Smith, the tale of two women botanists from two different time periods whose entries framed around each type of plant and its uses explores a different theme/moment in their lives, usually relating to gendered violence and resilience to such. It’s even got a sapphic subplot, so really it’s made for her. Rumour has it that the Matt Reeves Batverse for her is planned to be inspired by Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Rappacini’s Daughter, which has me insanely excited -- so I’d throw that on the list as well. To switch gears from just the plants, I think that she’d really enjoy the sheer depth of devotion between women on display in My Best Friend’s Exorcism by Grady Hendrix.
Riddler - I feel like any mystery novel you give the guy is going to end in “I simply would have _____, RIP to [protagonist’s/antagonist’s name] But I, Edward Nygma/Nigma/Nashton Am Different”. Guy probably went into a full rage about how stupidly Franklin Clarke from The ABC Murders got caught after all the trouble he took with the puzzle-clues. after so I think I’d give him Walter Tevis’ The Queen’s Gambit since a lot of iterations show him having a fondness for chess (and the genuine skill in the writing), and Beth’s arc with difficult beginnings, addiction struggles, resilience and alienation would resonate with him if he ever would admit to it. I also think Gogol would suit him well; I see him enjoying the humour in short works like The Nose, but Dead Souls’ protagonist really suits him as a trickster conman who entertains the possibility of doing better.
Scarecrow - Oh, this is the big one. Hardest one on the list, because Crane’s probably the best-read on the list considering his original motive of wanting to heist money to fund getting books, and his Year One backstory working this into his horrific childhood probably cemented this, so odds are he’s read most of them already, especially the classics! But I did like the suggestion in your fic The Most Poetical Topic he hasn’t read Stephen King’s Carrie, since that’s the shoo-in. I do think he’d also get a kick out of Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s works for modern gothics - Mexican Gothic and the use of the spores is up his alley in particular! Lindqvist‘s Let the Right One In with the cute little murder couple of vampire kids who absolutely obliterate bullies and find connection in being outsiders is probably his wish fulfilment jam, let’s be real. And because I’m me, I’d also insist on him reading The Moth Diaries by Rachel Klein because it’s essential reading imo and the psychological horror “is there a vampire or is it untreated grief and mental illness” plotline would tickle him.
Two-Face - Handing him a copy of Phantom of the Opera is probably a great way to get him to flip the coin on whether he’s shooting you or drowning you, so I’d say I’d get Harvey some more legal-related literature. He’s probably a fan of Atticus Finch, so hand him a better John Grisham, a good Perry Mason tale, or Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities especially. And of course, Dumas’ Count of Monte Cristo. We’re counting on you, Harv!!!
Penguin - Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Suskind was all but made for Oswald, especially the more grotesque iterations. It practically feels like proto-Burton!Oswald, although most iterations could probably get a lot out of the themes of abandonment and difficulty, the grotesque, and the ebb and flow of affections and power depending on one’s usefulness. The protagonist is even named after an animal to signify unwantedness!! But privately, I think Oswald likes his cozy mysteries too.
Mr. Freeze - The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery -- really, hear me out, because while the book is only directly about grief and a new lease on life at the end, there’s the grief throughout for a life not lived, and I think he’d enjoy its little quotidian charms and the way it speaks of finding appreciation while you’re here. Otherwise, I’d say Terry Pratchett’s Nation, which is one of the other most immensely powerful explorations of grief. It also involves quite a few scientists for his bias!!
Mad Hatter - Lewis Carroll’s works are his bread and butter, but I’d be very curious to see his thoughts on The Screwtape Letters. Otherwise I think I’d have to hand him a copy of The Stepford Wives with a sticky-note foreword of: “THIS IS A CAUTIONARY TALE, NOT AN INSTRUCTION MANUAL”.

And now... thoughts on a comic from someone super new to comics!!!
Today on justparkerluck, I share my thoughts on:
"Batman: The Long Halloween" - 13 Issues | December 1996 - December 1997 — written by Jeph Loeb & illustrated by Tim Sale
Notes before the review:
— I'm working through these fast but I promise I'm not rushing. Just having fun. I'll slow down when this obsession ends. This one's a bit longer than the last, which is fair cause the comic was longer yk.
Spoilers for the comic below the cut*
Tumblr media
First: Random notes in sequential order.
I have the assumption this is a Two-Face origin going into this. It's just how I've always heard this described
I prefer this art style to the last one. David Mazzucchelli was also brilliant but this was just more my taste. Tim Sale seems to lean into the stylism, far away from realism.
I really do just love how Gordon is drawn in this one. He's plain looking as always but there's a charm to it.
Also love the look of most of the Rogues: Grundy, Joker, Riddler, Scarecrow, and Two Face- all phenomenal designs)
Not a fan of this Selina design either. Really a bummer. I just hate whatever they're doing with her hair. And honestly, my very first thought was that she looked like a female Michael Jackson.
I get that they were trying to do like- some of the characters slurring their words together and stuff. But I really do think it’s funny that some of the characters were using words like "t'was" and "ye"
The scene at the very beginning reminded me of a scene from chapter one of the Telltale Batman game. I'm talking about when Bruce is throwing a charity event to endorse Harvey Dent and Carmine shows up and they have a bit of a meeting in Bruce's study.
I did not realize this was gonna span multiple holidays- not bad, I just had no clue
Gordon implies that Batman draws the villains of Gotham to the city- which, not wrong I think. That he essentially draws them out and encourages their existence with his own. I remember the sentiment was also in the Harley Quinn Soundmind podcast. Wonderful depiction of Harley btw, do check that out.
Stylistically I like that all the holiday murders are done in black-and-white with only key element coloured. I just think it was a good choice to draw our attention to one thing or another while also making the murder have that dramatic feeling
Okay, so who do I think is the holiday killer? Obviously, Mrs. Dent is the first one. She straight up says it. But I think Loeb tries to keep the second killer a bit ambiguous- whether Harvey was the second and Alberto was insane or if it was just Alberto. I think it was latter: Alberto was the killer and Mrs. Dent was deluding herself into thinking Harvey was committing the murders so they "could have more time together."
Second: Thoughts on each character:
Thoughts on Bruce Wayne
Happy to see Bats and Gordon working together so early in his career- and Harvey as an ally
Bruce asked his mother to wear the pearls??? Just the idea of Bruce thinking that it’s his own fault that his parents are dead. Which, yeah, it very well might be.
I’m cracking up at Batman wearing a helmet over the cowl while disguising himself as a guard. It's just so funny thinking of the ears folding in
Thoughts on The Dents
I just like seeing Harvey as an ally to Bruce. I like the reading that he was a genuinely good person prior to incident. It's just nice to see
Y’all don’t understand the pure unadulterated joy I felt when they revealed Harvey was alive. I was scared we were jumping straight into him being Two Face in like issue #2
Harvey walking through the door with Mrs. Dent in his arms genuinely melted my heart a little. Just knowing where his character is gonna go. God, that hurt.
"Two shots to the head. If you ask me, it couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy." Phenomenal line. Wrote it off the first time, chilling the second.
Okay the Two Face design really was grotesque. It feels so tragic that this man built his life and career off being charismatic and handsome and a good lawyer. And then in the very place of his work, genuinely trying to be good- he would have all that ruined
...Wowwww I hate Mrs. Dent. The pure delusion of thinking that Harvey was committing those murders was insane
Thoughts on The Gordons
I felt a bit bad for Mrs. Gordon early on. She just seems lonely
Mrs. Gordon refers to Barbara as Jim's niece? I’m not sure if that’s an old thing that was reconned or what. It's a bit confusing. I thought Barbara was named after her mother, Jim's wife idk
I wanna beat Gordon’s ass for ambushing Bruce in the alley. I know I've been very Jim Gordon-positive but oh lord. The same fucking alley where his parents were murdered, on Mother's Day- he had to have known that was a bad idea. Critical thinking, Jim Gordon.
THE TIE WITH LITTLE JAMES IS SO CUTE. BABY JAMES IS SO CUTE
Thoughts on Selina Kyle
Already loving Selina and Bruce's relationship. A solid amount of tension, beginning toward the end of issue #1
I really like that Selina has to pull Bruce out of Ivy's grasp. It just made smile
Really excited to see more of her relationship with Bruce
Thoughts on The Falcones
Carla Viti is insufferable- god, I hate her. Though obviously, her son is dead so like justified anger yk
Now what if I said Sofia Falcone Gigantes is kinda fine
…I had honestly forgotten about Alberto for a while. That's my only issue with him being Holiday. I only remembered him at the end because his design is fairly distinct
Carmine was just so stupid for hiring all those rogues and thinking it wouldn't blow up in his face
Thoughts on The Rogues Gallery
So I initially had thought this was going to be just Harvey Dent/Two Face- I was so so wrong and I'm not at all unhappy about it
Solomon Grundy: My old issue is that the Solomon Grundy rhyme works is if you pronounce Grundy as Grun-Day or Monday as Mond-Ee. Great design though- like a huge figure, its very Frankenstein. I didn't know a ton about him going into this, only having heard of him in passing.
The Joker: "The Joker's in this??? Fuck yeah." I fear I was kind of into this version of the Joker- anyway, I know that its common opinion that he's overused and all but that's kind of only made me love him. He's been in everything since I was a kid. I was very excited to see him.
Calendar Man: Just such a silly concept. I mean most villains are silly concepts, but- wow the guy literally just has a calendar on his head. He also is an astrology girlie, I've decided. He could rattle off your entire star chart if you asked and could probably tell you what it means.
The Riddler: His design was very fitting, but I didn't love how old he seemed to be. Though I suppose it's fair because I guess he wouldn’t be one of the more active villains, in a physical sense. Idk, otherwise, I like the character and I'm excited to see more of him.
Poison Ivy: Introduction to Ivy was just gorgeous- the scene was covered in green. I'm pretty sure the seducing men is a fairly big part of her brand so I'm not super excited about that but I do like that this gave Selina a chance to save Bruce.
Scarecrow: His design? So, so cool. I love it. He's tall and looming and he has a dark trench coat and he just looked great. Just a very generally spooky vibe, done very well ...I don't understand the nursery rhyme thing though. Isn't he supposed to be a educated doctor? It's odd.
The Mad Hatter: We have finally come across a villain I do not know! Lowkey, looks like a leprechaun. Truly a terrible cosplay for someone so into the source material. (I don't like him lol)
(Thoughts on Two Face and the Falcones in the sections above ^)
Third: Did I like it?
Yuh-huh!
I loved this. I didn't expect it to go beyond Halloween but I think the use of other holidays was great- the mood wasn't stuck being strictly Halloween-like
Terrific introduction to Batman's rogues. We got to know all their gimmicks without lingering on them. It was good- concise, effective introductions. I think this was most of the main ones? More or less all the ones I know so from here, any others will probably be obscure to
Lastly: The best panel gallery:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Final Notes:
— I might re-edit this later. I'm just tryna get it up and online rn, but I'm a bit tired and I'm not proofreading tonight. I'm doing Dark Victory next so that's fun. I think that's all I have to say- this is long anyway lol.
Thanks for reading! Engage with the post and take care of urself! Bye!!!

Tumblr media
guess fucking what? my inbox is so fucking full right now i'm unloading all of this shit in one post.
For the 11th gotham memes: gothamites react to bruce being jacked in a tiktok he made with kids, like super yoked, ripped as hell
fucking hilarious thanks. i think i did it in one meme post, but i genuinely don't remember which one
i dunno which of the batfam would do this but one time i was sleeping over at a friends house and ended up on the floor bc the bed was so very small and i just stayed there because the rug was soft
that's a drunk jason move i don't know what to tell you
tim and jason are "i listen to pop punk" solidarity. whenever jason highjacks the batmobile theyll go on long ass car rides blaring mcr and paramore and then never talk about it again
as they should!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! tim: no jason it's my turn using the aux cord i gotta put on my jams jason: don't you dare put on weird shit tim: don't worry, you're gonna love this *plays fearless (taylor's version)
hear me out hear me out, red hood stans 🤝 nightwing stans t h i g h s
holy shit yes.
SNL au: Bruce breaks character when pretending to superman and says something like "I'm not superman! You've seen his gps!! It's from 2001!!!" @sabeanybabe
superman flies past the snl building the next day just to say 'actually it's from 2005, i'm not a heathen'
does your back hurt from carrying the batfam fandom
it hurts more from the exotic rock collection i keep in my backpack, but thanks for the concern.
I love your posts by why would you always leave the best parts in the tags?
as a treat for the people that check the tags ;) (and also because i'm committed to the short post aesthetic)
somehow your playlist was everything i never knew i needed. i mean it. this is my new favorite playlist.
and don't you dare get a new favourite playlist!
babe ur stoner tim playlist is exactly too perfect, earth is literally blessed by ur existence
babe thanks so much! i love my stoner tim playlist because it's just my usual playlist but people think it's an artistic choice that i put taylor swift and britney spears in there, when it's just what i unironically like listening to
JANDKSKDK BILLY RAY CYRUS ON THE STONER TIM PLAYLIST I LOVE IT IT
again it's not even an ironic choice, i know every single word and i genuinely like the song
The last chapter of Fundamentals of Casework has me crying at work. Thanks I love it @dudelookitsalesbian
oh babe, i'm sorry, but also, not sorry i love chapter 4 so much it's my lovechild with the 'mental illness' tag
soooo....stumbled on your tumblr by some stroke of fate??? read your DC fanfic first. which is PHENOMENAL btw. then found all the batmemes; the funniest thing EVER bc everyone forgets about regular old gothamites. kept scrolling and your blog pops up as recommended. clicked on the ao3 for shits and giggles and waddaya know?!?!? it's YOU!!! you're LEGEND!!!! ever seen that meme? it's a video of a cat that got into a baseball field and the two announcers get really invested in his escape attempt and start giving a play by play of the cat instead of the game. memeable moment: "GREAT stuff from the Cat!!!"
i seriously think about this ask every single day and it's so fucking funny to me that i've never seen the meme you're referencing, but i still find myself going 'GREAT stuff from the Cat!!!' whenever i see something funny. but wow i'm glad you liked this steaming pile of garbage
Fav dc character overall? And fav batfamily character?
don't ask me to pick between the loves of my life, but i can tell you i've cried about every single batfamily member and also wally west (my beloved)
What's your opinion on fans having a problem with batfam being "too big"? And some even claim that batfam is just "Bruce Alfred Dick Damian" and the rest of them are just "friends and allies" (source: reddit) Personally, I like batfam because of this reason but idk
stupid. a family can never be too big. i'm not that big a fan of like huge batfam stuff with everybody from every single universe, because as much as it's funny for bruce to have like 30 kids, it just feels a little too OOC for me.
This is the best tag I've seen involving the batfam, thanks for thinking of it
Tumblr media
This is canon now @nctxrejects
lmao yeah i think at that point alfred has had to sit through like at least a dozen coming out talks and just has a pride flag collection in the attic that he pulls out whenever a kid comes out
idk why batfam hits different as compared to any other superhero family
bc it's found family and usually the other superhero families are almost all genetically related in one way or another
I don't know if you watch the umbrella academy but I saw your last post about batcest and saw the similarities. But the thing is (although I think it's weird) in TUA, they addressed it by saying "they were raised as weapons, not siblings" or something along those lines, which is simply not the case with batfam.
yeah i watched tua but i also thought it was ridiculous and they still treated each other as siblings so i didn't like the luthor/allison thing, and am glad they stopped doing that shit bc it fucking sucked.
Hot take: Batcest shippers are the same people who believe adopted siblings are not actual siblings
smoking hot take: batcest shippers are the people who watch 'my sister got stuck in the washing machine' porn
Duke was adopted by Bruce?
not technically no, but do i, tumblr user batarangsoundsdumb, look like i care?
True story but I had to change my freaking name because it used to be "Damien" and most people would go "OH LIKE DAMIAN WAYNE" like please I'm just tryna live
true story, but i don't actually think of damian when i hear the name damian, literally the first thing that pops up is damian darkh like bruh what?
apparently dc comics company supported comic stores by giving out new titles and stuff during the beginning of the pandemic to help them run and I just think that's wholesome
ah yeah that's so fucking cool, still don't like dc, the company, because this world is a capitalist hellhole and we're all owned by warner brothers or disney with no in between.
ayo looking at tumblr head canons and finding out bruce is actually a terrible father is a punch in the gut
lmao yes, in like 50% of comics bruce is a terrible father and it gives me whiplash
oooh I just saw the jason todd vs winter soldier post and the real question is: batman vs iron man
while iron man has like hundreds of cases of armor, batman could throw out an emp and have the guy dropping out of the sky in 2 seconds.
dickfast = fastdick = quickdick = quickie
magnum hot take
hey bata(?) just thought I'd let you know I have copied the obnoxious emoji and Billy Ray post for use on simping men going forth
thank you 😘🌷 (@spacebarsidecar)
why would you do that to your followers???? i get why i did it, but why would you???
what is scarecrow made the nightwing funko pop himself, like those diy-ers that paint over other ones
oh god no, horrible take, horrible take, that's a disgusting thought oh no
I see your HC that Bruce and Oliver fucked and raise you this: Dick and Roy ALSO fucked
yes they did and it was a horrible moment for jason to find out dick has fucked both of his best friends
"at this rate bruce adds like 1 child to his family every decade or so" Duke is introduced in 2013, Damian as Damian, not as an unnamed child, in 2006. And he is already 14 years old, Robins rarely remain Robins after 16 😬 It looks like a new Robin and Batkid will appear in a couple of years
i mean i can't wait? but somebody will probably die first tho, we're due for another major character death. my money's on either cass or duke this time.
BRO you're so right all of your Bruce's ex headcanons are amazing but they aren't ships, that's kinda wild. Like I don't want any peeks into how their relationship was I just want to see everyone make fun of them
lmao YES it's just i love bruce being a slut, like good for him.
I am in love with your posts your honour thank you
omg thanks are we like,, gonna kiss now?
The justice league needs to have a meeting to discuss how many of their members/partners have slept with bruce. Because through a combination of cannon & fannon (if DC wasn’t homophobic) we have AT LEAST: 1) clark 2) lois 3) oliver 4) dinah 5) john
Thats not counting villains or random civilians @dudelookitsalesbian
yes yes yes, they'll have a yearly meeting about how many of their collective exes could be out for revenge and batman's list just keeps getting longer.
tim was like "i'm drake now" and everyone was like ahh so your fursona is a dragon and tim was like pffffft no. ducks.
and what about it?
when steph's fighting livewire and she zaps her with lighting and nothing happens and then they both just. stand there awkwardly for a second and talk. yeah i couldn't stop laughing at that batgirl steph is the BEST
oh yeah that was fucking hilarious and i think it would be so cool and sexy of dc to give steph a little comic series,,, as a treat
Hi I absolutely adore all of yours "Bruce and Oliver very badly pretending they didn't fuck each other" memes
lmao i do too
I need you to know that “Bruce Wayne had frosted tips” is one of my favorite Bruce takes of all time it’s so galaxy brained. you’re right and you should say it
he also painted his hair blonde once when he was travelling and in conclusion, this is why he's being blackmailed by the gotham gazette.
you know my thing about gordon being branded as the only good cop in gotham is its a load of shit like arguably he's a good person and not working to screw people over or anything but the fact that he also works w. batman makes him a shit cop. like yea batman is better than the mob but its still illegal its still an abuse of power he just not making bank
babe, all cops are bad cops. (but yeah youre absolutely right, working with vigilantes makes you a shit cop, but also working against vigilantes just makes you an asshole cop yanno?)
ruh roh i think i’m about to add “so not yeehaw” every time i don’t like something
that's a very good vocabulary upgrade
somehow i feel like steph already knew. like babs obviously knew but i feel like bruce got high/drunk in front of steph and started telling his boarding school stories and steph was just like “oh you fucked up i’m never gonna forget this”
steph and bruce have weird uncle/rebellious niece dynamic and they just hang out sometimes and bruce will be like 'i once broke my arm when i tripped over a hedge when i was drunk so oliver drove me to the hospital on an electric scooter' and steph will just have to sit there with that knowledge in her head.
Hello I just wanted to tell you you are So right in all your steph opinions bc she is, in fact amazing and I think that's very sexy of you. Ps. Your Bruce/Oliver fic is hilarious
babe, thank you so much and yes steph is amazing and i love her and she deserves the world and she's the best member of the batfam hands down. also thanks
In Supersons we see a couple of kids that are implied to be Damian and Jon's children and the boy has laser eyes and can fly, so I asume he's not adopted. The girl, who calls Bruce grandpa, can also fly, btw. So it's canon (probably by accident) that Jon can have kids and he must have married one of Bruce's kids. (I'm hoping for Damian, mostly because any other of his children would be waaaaaaaaaaaaay too old.) @artemisa97
lmao that was probably an accident seeing as jon is a 17 year old superhero in the year 3000 (by the jonas brothers)
You know, I'm a die hard fan of your memes, but I gotta say one thing: if Gothamites actually took gas mask everywhere with them, then the Scarecrow would just be a weird dude in a weird costume, and not a villain oh so scary. DC really should just takes notes from you.
bold of you to assume there's no gothamite anti-maskers
How does it feel being the funniest person on this app?
horrible, next question.
I can't listen to Green Day or Billy Joel without thinking of your post about how Bruce got arrested at a Billy Joel concert @nightwings-kid
yeah that's your mistake, i on the other hand can't enjoy billy joel without thinking about the glee rendition of 'uptown girl'
I've FINALLY been watching the Batman animated series and I gotta say, after watching "the gray ghost" I am CONVINCED that Batman is a closeted super hero geek who was 100% freaking out the first time he met Superman and is just REALLY good at hiding it.
superman: so what do you do in your free time? batman, thinking about the superman fanfiction he's writing on the batcomputer: i have no free time
bruce and oliver be like boyfriends to co-workers 401k (do the justice leagues get 401ks??? not that bruce and ollie would need them, but-)
lmao yes just 400 thousand words of bruce realising 'oh dip oliver is such a fucking dumbass' (also i don't know what a 401 k is but i assume they don't?)
Gothamites would totally boo superman as he saves Gotham while batman is out. @meenje
he's like 'okay think about that next time you want to be saved from an alien octopus'
I just took long break from dc comics and I come back to see ric grayson ??
i think it's very cool and sexy of dc to see dick and just think 'you know what? let's just give him a traumatic brain injury' and then didn't develop his character in any real way
SPEAKING OF RIC GRAYSON, gothamites making confused memes out of ric grayson is much needed
'dick grayson is my taxi driver? can anyone explain what the fuck happened he looks like an italian plumber?'
i hate to say it but batfam are def "marvel characters" in that sense they are characters who are human but become superheroes unlike most dc characters who are gods trying to be human maybe this is why I like batfam
fair enough

Hiii, do you have any recs for Robin Jason comics? I'd love to read more about him but I have no clue where to start. Love your art btw it's all adorable <3
Sure thing!!! And omg thank you 🥺🥺 your art is super cute too!!
If I were to rec One Thing as a starting point for Robin Jason, Batman #408-#429 covers Jason’s main run as Robin and his death arc and is the main essential reading I’d recommend. It’s fairly short and a good place to start imo!
Among others, it includes his post-crisis origin and first outing as Robin, his first meeting with Dick, the Garzonas incident, and his death and its immediate aftermath in the Death in the Family arc.
Tumblr media
While Jason’s time as Robin in post crisis is fairly short and not as hard to get through as other characters with longer runs, i know Reading Comics Hard so I’ll make a shorter list first, with more recs under the cut!
Batman #408-#409 (Jason's origin)
Batman #410-#411 (his first outing as Robin)
Batman #413 (smart boy Jason)
Batman #415 (more good Jason moments)
Batman #416 (his and Dick's first meeting, also Dick and Bruce argue)
Batman Annual #12 (has a solo Jason story set at his school)
Detective Comics #569-#570 (Jason gets to kick the Joker's butt)
Detective Comics #571 (the Scarecrow kidnaps Jason)
Detective Comics #573 (this one’s just cute)
Superman Annual #11 (Bruce, Jason and Wonder Woman visit Superman on his birthday and stuff happens)
Blue Devil #19 (Jason is pen pals with Kid Devil)
Batman: the Cult (a 4-issue pretty dark miniseries where Bruce is kidnapped and brainwashed by a cult. Some great Jason moments)
Batman #424-#425 (The Garzonas storyline, or when Jason may or may not have pushed somebody off a building. Trigger warnings for sexual assault and suicide)
Batman #426-#429 (A Death in The Family, or Jason’s death arc)
I’ll be referencing this Jason reading list, since it’s what I followed when I started reading. It can be checked for a more comprehensive list of his appearances too, since I’m not aiming for a full list! (though I might edit it to include more stuff eventually.)
First things first, Jason got rebooted once during his time as Robin; he was originally a circus kid like Dick in pre-crisis (before the reboot), and later in post-crisis got his more well-known origin as the orphan who stole the tires off the batmobile. I’ll be focusing on post-crisis Robin Jason since I’m still reading his pre-crisis run, but the list I linked has more info on that if you’re interested!
Batman and Robin-focused
Tumblr media
Stories centered on the Dynamic Duo!
Batman #408-#429 - Jason’s post-crisis run as Robin, as mentioned above! The last four issues are the Death in the Family arc. The Batman: Second Chances trade collects a good chunk of these (#408-#416), plus Batman Annual #11 and a couple stories from before Jason’s post-crisis origin.
Detective Comics #568-#582 - Jason’s Robin run in Detective Comics! It’s a fun read and Alan Davis’ art style is very cute imo. (Jason isn’t around from #575 to #578 due to getting hurt in #573)
Batman Annual #10-#12 - More Batman and Robin stories. #12 has a Jason solo story set at his school!
Batman: the Cult - a 4-issue miniseries where Bruce is kidnapped and brainwashed by a cult. A pretty dark story and one of the last ones from before his death. Jason has some great moments in it!
Dc Retroactive: Batman - The 80s - Story from 2011 written by Mike Barr, who wrote Jason’s 80s Robin stories in Detective Comics!
Robin 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spetacular - One of the stories, More Time, is about Jason and Bruce and goes between the past (with Jason as Robin) and the present (with Jason as Red Hood). Short and very sweet!
Crossovers/Teamups
Tumblr media
In which Jason meets or teams up with other characters, with or without Batman!
Blue Devil #19 - Jason is pen pals with Eddie Bloomberg/Kid Devil and teams up with him!
Action Comics #556 + #594 - Jason meets Superman!
Superman Annual #11 - For The Man Who Has Everything, or where Jason goes with Bruce to Superman’s birthday, first meets Wonder Woman, and Stuff Happens. (Jason gets to be the hero!)
New Teen Titans V2 (1984) #18-#31 - Jason joins the Teen Titans for a while! It’s fun to see him in a team and his characterization here is really good imo. (this is the span of issues he appears in but he isn’t in all of them)
Legends (six-part miniseries) - A DC crossover event! Jason has short but great appearances (the time where he breaks his leg, but wants to get up and help anyway).
Nightwing Year One #101-#106 - A rewrite of Dick's Nightwing origin with occasional Jason appearances until #106, which is a retelling of their first meeting where they work together to rescue Alfred. While I have Issues with the characterization of Jason in this, it has some cute moments and I’d be remiss to not include the story that introduces Dick’s nickname of “Little Wing” for Jason.
After his Death
Tumblr media
Stuff dealing with the aftermath of Jason’s death and the impact it left on others. (Some of the stuff here is just listed for a single page or panel rather than a full story about Jason)
Batman #430-#432 + #496 - Bruce in the aftermath of Jason’s death.
Batman Annual #13 - Jason appears in a flashback.
The New Titans #55 - Dick and the Titans find out about Jason’s death, and Dick confronts Bruce about it.
Batman: Year Three + A Lonely Place of Dying - While these focus on Dick and Tim respectively, they’re set after Jason’s death and show how Bruce is dealing with it. Year Three is in Batman #436-#439 and A Lonely Place of Dying (Tim’s origin story) is in Batman #440/New Titans #60/Batman #441/New Titans #61/Batman #442, also included in reprints of Death in the Family.
Detective Comics #618 - Has a nice little moment of Tim looking up to Jason.
Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #100 - The issue is mainly a Dick origin story, but in the end there’s a sweet and sad story about Jason’s beginning and ending as Robin.
Nightwing Secret Files and Origins - On the first story, Taking Wing, Jason appears to Dick as a dream/hallucination while the latter is having a near-death experience and accompanies him through various of Dick’s memories.
Joker: Last Laugh #6 - The one time when, upon believing Tim was killed and being taunted with Jason’s death, Dick kills the Joker. (the full thing is a six-issue miniseries)
Nightwing (1996) #63 - The aftermath of Dick killing the Joker (though he was revived), but I’m mainly including this for the one panel that shows a picture of Dick and Jason on what seems to be a ski trip.
Batman: Gotham Knights #34 - At the end there’s a story called “The Delusions of Alfred Pennyworth” about Jason’s ghost and Alfred.
Batman: Gotham Knights #43-#45 - Has a flashback to a Barbara and Jason teamup and a recap of Jason’s death as a social worker looks into it and investigates Bruce’s family.
Detective Comics #790 - Bruce talks to Cass about Jason on the day of Jason’s birthday.
Robin V4 #85 - The story itself is about the Joker reflecting on the Robins and Jason only appears briefly, but I think it’s worthwile to include as it’s one of the few times where the involvement of Jason’s mother in his death is acknowledged after Death in the Family. (Also there’s a panel where Jason kicks the joker on the crotch)
Green Arrow V3 (2001) #7 - The one panel where Jason is shown swinging around in heaven :)
Alternate Universes/Other Media
Tumblr media
Some stuff that doesn’t fit anywhere else/isn’t quite comics/isn’t really canon, but I think is neat and wanted to include!
Letters - letters from readers sent during when Jason was Robin and after his death. They can be interesting to look through to get a sense of how he was seen by readers at the time (there’s even an eulogy by a clergyman!). The ones I’ve seen can be found in this tag, and this post links to a few too (as well as some other info regarding Jason and the vote that led to his death).
The Batman Files - A book that contains several files over various topics and characters across Batman’s history. Among other things, it has Jason’s death certificate. (mainly including this because early on I spent a while trying to find out how old he was when he died)
Tiny Titans #23, #29, #33, #39, #45, #47 - An adorable alternate universe comic in a kid-friendly setting! Jason’s design in it is very cute.
Batman The Brave and the Bold #13 - Jason and Robins from other points in time team up to save Batman!
Teen Titans Go! season 6, episode 17 (Egg Hunt) - He doesn’t actually appear, but Jason is namedropped and said to be Batman’s favorite Robin.
Batman And The New Robin (unmade cartoon) - An unproduced animated TV series from the late 80s that would have starred Bruce as Batman and Jason as Robin! Unfortunately the project was abandoned and the show was never made, but the full series bible is available to read in its entirety and a link to it can be found here! There’s a page on it on the Lost Media Wiki as well.

[ @kittyboyrobin was going 2 write a bunch in the tags but. it's an essay atp so i'm writing here LOL. this is a bit of a ramble / long post on my experience with batman so don't feel like u have to read everything - there will be TL;DRs throughout - i just have a lot to say on this in general. and i also have adhd lol. once again though, i don't expect anyone to read this all the way through but if you do - thank you!! ]
okay. I DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO ME!!! oh my god this is literally the biggest joke the universe has pulled on me. bc i used to be you. looking at ppl draw, write, and talk about superheroes going "um... smile and wave y'all!!" ( i know u didn't mean it maliciously btw i'm just making fun of my situation LOL )
when the marvel infinity war shit was going down i felt like an outsider looking in because it was so much information to keep up on and everyone just Knew what was going on. and it was so bizarre seeing people just act like knowing all the movies ( or those ppl who actually read the comics ) before watching infinity war or whatever was normal. i had seen like 4 movies at the time and it was all so very stressful, considering the fact that i was in high school at the time so i literally did not have enough time to like. scratch the surface with it.
because of the stress that came about from that time, i was put off from superhero movies and media for a WHILE. so i never thought i would EVER get into dc or marvel like. on a fandom level? but i think that's also because it was one of those interests i consumed as a kid - and when you revisit something you were into as a kid, it's kinda... jarring to see people "fandom-ifying" it if that makes sense. it's like you have that moment of realization where you go "Oh huh. I guess I didn't realize people could do that? and that people still like this. Huh." and you stand there for a second, looking at these people. and then you eventually move on with your life, right? WELL... it's a long story.
first, i think i need to establish some context because it can help justify WHY i became so suddenly obsessed with these superheroes. so, yes. this is going to be a very long post. what the hell, it already is.
i grew up with batman. i can't say i grew up with marvel, because for me it was tobey maguire's spiderman - not marvel. a lot of kids grew up with '02 spiderman so this isn't news. but batman - i grew up watching batman the animated series since my dad was a huge batman nerd, he wrote a college paper on batman and he even has a first edition hq print of batman: the killing joke!! but i digress. what I'm trying to say is that it really helped that my dad also had a lot of love for the series. the score in batman: tas is incredible and the animation is still so good, you can really tell that they put a lot of love into the series. the show aired '92 so i was literally growing up watching this - so it's a core memory.
flash forward to 2005 - batman begins comes out, and my dad buys it on DVD as soon as he can. the movie was so cool - here batman was in real life - and my mind was blown!! i never watched any of the old batman movies, so this was my first introduction to live-action batman. the nolanverse movies were a refreshing take on a series i had only seen animated as a kid, but i know i preferred the animated series' noir story-telling in comparison to the action-packed scenes in the nolan movies. ( scarecrow's actor was foine as hell tho * lip bite emoji * )
now LASTLY flash forward to 2009 - rocksteady makes batman: arkham asylum, and holy shit. my brothers were CRAZYY for this game let me tell you. if you don't already know, this game helped pave the way for other superhero games that would release afterward, a common example being the spiderman games. i remember watching my brother play these games because the stealth mechanics scared me ( and also the game was just? STRAIGHT UP TERRIFYING? and it still holds up to this day - the tone and atmosphere of the first game are unrivaled with the sequels that would follow. ) I want to say we didn't get it on release, though I can't remember.
Then the sequel, arkham city, releases (2011) and my brother is ALL over it. i had watched my brother play the first game, so you know i was going to watch him play this one. and this one had so much more!! when i was playing the arkham games later for myself, i remembered sooo much more about arkham city because my brother would play this game so much. i think he replayed it more than i can count - and despite me not playing this one either, the story was still so engaging my dad - being the batman buff he is - even got the special edition statue/figure + controller for the game, which was funny because i don't think we understood why our dad was THAT into it.
THEN AGAIN, another sequel comes out ( there was another one but we didn't get it ) called arkham knight - we get the special arkham edition ps4 that comes with the game. this one's a different story though, my same brother played and beat this game - but i never saw past the opening part of the game ( the opening is really fucking good though, i remembered it vividly as i played arkham knight ). I don't know why i didn't bother to watch, but i guess i just had other things. i felt my focus on batman slipping away finally - but i still loved the series to death. i was just simply getting into other fandoms for the first time, i think i want to say mlp was my hyperfix around that time.
TL;DR (#1) - batman was a big part of my childhood - largely batman: the animated series, the christopher nolan movies, and watching my brother play the batman: arkham games. i lost interest in batman as a whole around the fourth game's release (2015) due to other hyperfixations.
okay now flash forward to the present: i wanna say early october? my boyfriend is streaming injustice in discord, and i don't know anything about this game. it has a slew of dc characters i'm not familiar with, save for the batman ones. but now he's playing this stage with a stage transition and in comes scarecrow - but more specifically his arkham version. and i'm staring at the screen in awe because it's been like what? 10 years since i had laid eyes with arkham asylum's scarecrow - and here he is beating the shit out of the character in a fucking stage transition. it's one of the coolest things i've ever seen, because the 10-year-old in me that watched my brother play arkham asylum is jumping up and down. i didn't remember how obsessed i was with batman until i had that moment of just. unfiltered nostalgia. i was hooked again. there was another stage transition with the arkham city designs of the batman rogues - and i remember my bf, my friend jar, and i were just yelling off all of the characters in surprise as the animation showed them all. it was too fucking good.
[ here's the stage transition in question if you're interested. needle tw for scarecrow's hand needle things ]
and because this is what. early october? i had yet to figure out a halloween costume - and my ass was obsessed with scarecrow's arkham design again, so i decided to make that my halloween costume!! i don't have any good pictures because there's still some work to be done with it but i made everything myself on that baby. if you haven't noticed already, i really like scarecrow. ( which is funny because i don't even think he was my FAVORITE favorite as a kid? but the whole fear toxin thing is so good. )
as i'm working on my costume throughout october, i buy the arkham games on sale and start arkham asylum. oh my god. it's wayyy creepier than i remembered and the graphics were surprisingly still good? the combat was a little janky but i quickly got used to it, but my god. the story is seriously so good in these games, i'm largely biased because i know there's flaws with each game - but they're all so good in my book. and the stealth was not even that bad - in fact i was enjoying the stealth segments the most - this game seriously makes it so fun. if you ever want to try to get into batman, i would recommend picking up the games on steam when they're on sale. there's a good mix of combat and stealth so you're never really tired of it. also the combat is fucking rhythm-based - even if it feels janky in asylum, it feels so rewarding when you eventually master it.
TL;DR (#2) - beginning of oct. my bf streams injustice 1 in vc and i get a nostalgia trip for batman, so i play the arkham games for the first time. i make my halloween costume the arkham asylum scarecrow. and i have a lot of fucking fun playing the first two arkham games.
and the last part of this ESSAY?? this was supposed to be like 3 paragraphs at most. what the hell happened. okay whatever. the next part goes that batman: arkham knight ( technically the fourth game in the arkham series but this was the third arkham game i played ) goes into the backstory of another character whom i played briefly in injustice 2 ( i played this game a little bit after my bf showed injustice 1 ) and ZAMN. people say the story in this game is lacking but gawtdam my bar is in hell bc this game fucked me upppp brah. also, scarecrow was back * heart eyes emoji * but that's beside the point.
so now i'm interested in this character... i feel myself going ill... and i find out there's an animated movie ( based off of a comic for him ) and i just HAVE to watch it. i finally get my grubby little hands on HBO because everything dc is fucking locked on there and BEHOLD!! i watch the movie. but then i watch some more dc movies. and shows ( the harley quinn show is actually really funny ) and now my same dc friend and my bf are telling me i gotta watch the flashpoint movie. so i do. and then we watch more dc movies - not just batman. and well. that's the end of my story because that's where i am now. i'm doing fanart of fucking hal jordan green lantern who i never thought i would ever draw in my life. and now i know who each of the robins are and who fucking. reverse flash is. this is my life now i don't know what went wrong. something happened. something shifted. but NOW YOU KNOW * grabs you and shakes you around * NOW YOU KNOW WHY I HAVE LOST MY LIFE TO THESE SUPERHEROES. I CAN'T GO BACK I CAN'TTTT
[ also side note: i watched the new venom movie prior to this ( it was really good! i liked it a lot. ) and then i watched the first venom. and then the trailer for spiderman no way home drops - teasing the old spiderman villains i saw as a kid. another nostalgia trip for child-me to grab in her small, trembling hands. and - mind you - this happened before and during the same time as my aforementioned batman/dc craze. i think i may have adhd /hj ]
TL;DR (#3) - arkham knight introduces me to a new batman character, and goes over his backstory enough but i want to know more. i find out there's a movie for him on hbo, which has almost everything dc. i watch it and i watch more dc movies + shows, but not just batman. now i'm drawing fanart of other dc characters and i look extremely ill. also on a side note i also am excited for the new spiderman movie. THE END

dc?
Hi :) Alright, let’s do this!
(These are all Batman/Batman adjacent characters and I’m sorry)
The first character I fell in love with:
Batman. He was the first superhero I was exposed to and I have been a fan for as long as I can remember, since I was really young, so yeah <3
The character I never expected to love as much as I do now:
Talia Al Ghul. I use to not really care for her/be neutral to her but now knowing the backstory of how she use to be before retcons and the racism/colorism that happens with her character, I’ve come to appreciate her more and now I love her :)
The character everyone else loves that I don’t:
Hm…I guess Punchline? I don’t know how popular she really is but I think she’s just okay. Her costume is cool though and I do like her villain name
The character I love that everyone else hates:
I don’t know if anyone “hates him but I like The Creeper/Jack Ryder a lot for some reason lol (also kind of ironic considering one of the other questions I answer down the road)
The character I used to love but don’t any longer:
Only one I can think of is Jervis Tetch/Mad Hatter—like I don’t hate him I just don’t like the way that his character has been taken in recent years. You know, going down the path of being creepy and kidnapping girls that look like Alice. No, DC, please stop that, I beg you :)
The character I would totally smooch:
I’m leaning towards Jason…and I have no idea why that is the case. Maybe like…a kiss on the cheek or something, I don’t know XD
The character I’d want to be like:
Huntress—any of them, who doesn’t love someone with a crossbow??
The character I’d slap:
Joker. A punch in the face/throat would be more preferable :)
A pairing that I love:
Ooh! Many, but let’s go with a villain pairing because why not? I’ve become really attached to hattercrow AKA Mad Hatter x Scarecrow for some reason (from regular Batman comics/the animated series, not Gotham)
A pairing that I despise:
I really dislike Barbara and Bruce being shipped…it’s weird. Please stop that :’)
Also I don’t really like Bruce being shipped with his sons or them being shipped with each other. I don’t care if you do it or not, like it’s whatever to me, but I don’t really like it so I don’t follow blogs that do.
BTW, I was looking on the shipping wiki and Bruce Wayne x Kate Kane exists which is weird considering they are cousins in some continuous and also Kate is a lesbian. You all know that, right??
(Although it is kind of funny to think about since the whole point of her being introduced was to give Bruce a love interest in the beginning lol)
Okay, that’s all the questions. Thank you :)
