Swimming in Phoenix + The Bad Ass Swimmers Club
I enjoyed the few times I was able to go swimming in an outdoor pool in Phoenix at Ability360! I loved the heated therapy pool and got a chance to feel my body react to being submerged in water from the shallow to deep end. It's too bad I didn't continue swimming lessons when I was a kid, because then I'd be a part of the Bad Ass Swimmers Club lol (aka all the folks who swim!). I literally feel like taking swimming lessons as a child is one of the best things a parent/guardian can do for their kids; it can be a great advantage to have as the child gets older. I'm learning and accepting it's never too late to start something you really want to do, so I really look forward to swimming more in the future!
The Bad Ass Swimmers Club
I just randomly made up the concept of "The Bad Ass Swimmers Club" to be an umbrella term for all the swimmers I admire. There are folks in my personal life and orbit who inspire me (s/o to Nora Almedia who is an avid swimmer and has a dope project called "Open Waters", and Charmaine Bee who documents their time swimming in the ocean and waterways in/near Bahia, Brazil), and I just feel like swimming journeys are some of the most beautiful unfoldings to witness.
I've also been following two recent river swims:
#HudsonSwim2023 by Lewis Pugh and team!
youtube
"On August 13 2023, Lewis Pugh began his 315-mile (507-km) swim down the Hudson River, from its source to its end at New York City. He is doing this to highlight the critical role rivers play in a habitable planet.
Lewis will explore the interconnectedness of rivers and oceans, and stress the urgent need to restore, protect and respect them. “If we want healthy oceans we also need healthy rivers — it’s that simple.”
The end of the swim will coincide with the UN General Assembly Week, Climate Week NYC 2023, and the UN Secretary General’s Climate Ambition Summit".
Agbetsi Living Waters Swim by Yvette Tetteh and team!
youtube
"Imagine a future where the beach is clean and the waters clear. A future where fishing nets catch fish, and not trash. A future without discarded clothes washing up along the banks of our rivers, burning on our roadsides, or towering over the homes of thousands of people at the place once regarded as a sacred lagoon. A future where the Korle Lagoon is swimmable…
With the stage set by decades of Waste Colonialism and centuries of extractive and exploitative global trade, this future may seem impossible, but it is the future we are working toward. It is the future we must work toward, breaking down the impossible into its constituent parts, one stroke at a time.
We are excited to launch the Agbetsi Living Water Swim, a month-long exploration of the Volta River System that gives life to millions of people in Ghana and throughout West Africa".
Yvette Tetteh actually joined Lewis Pugh for a leg of the Hudson Swim journey on September 12, 2023!
#REPOST from @lewispughfdn "Wonderful to have our #RiverWarrior @yvette_tetteh join @lewis.pugh on the #HudsonSwim2023 yesterday. Yvette recently swam the entire length of the Volta River in Ghana to raise awareness of the impact synthetic microfibers have on river ecosystems and communities 👏🏊♂️ #RiversAreLife"
Hello you swimmers out there! You inspire me! Here's a message for you!

29 years ago I asked this amazing woman to be my girl and she said yes. 5 years later I asked her to marry me and she said yes. Today we are happier than ever no thanks to me. She is my rock, she is the glue that keeps this family together, a lot of times just barely, but somehow she finds the strength to power through. She has saved me from myself more times than I can remember and now it is time for me to repay her for her unconditional love. I literally thank God everyday for her. I/We are truly blessed. Thank you My Love and may we live another 50 years together happy, loving, scrapping and caring. #godisgood #trulyblessed #togetherweareone #onefamily #oneohana #ohanaovereverything #strengtheninspirechange #kainoamcgee #mcgeebrand #kainoamcgeeboardcompany #kmbco #kmbcoversatilityboard #xlr8uh #ohanasurfproject #osp #ohanasurfproject.com #landmarklogistics #ProgenexUSA #ability360

As I walk out of the Ability360 Sports & Fitness Center I am without words. I met some of the most outstanding individuals who are doing so much for the community. Joan Greene for Congress and I spent time with the outreach department here and some of the things in the legislature and in cities that are in question are just not right for people. It really is up to us to take care of our seniors, our vets, our people with disabilities and our children. Happy Friday! I feel inspired to go do some good. 🙂 #Ability360 #ITrustJoan #BeGoodToEachOther (at Ability360 Sports & Fitness Center)

Meet PDA's Erika Jahneke. Why she wants Congress to reject healthcare repeal...Instead #ProtectOurCare:
"Hi, I’m Erika. I’m an aspiring writer that likes to rent movies, volunteer in my community, and continue to nag all my friends to watch “The Wire” because I think it’s brilliant.
I am probably like a lot of women that you know, except there was an accident when I was born and my brain lost oxygen. This damage, called cerebral palsy, affect people in many different ways, but mine has left me too impaired to stand, dress myself, or go to the toilet without assistance.
With the help of my family, and attendants paid for by Medicaid (Right now, my mother is in both categories) I was able to graduate from college, see some of my writing get published, and attempt to take a small part in fashioning the political future I want to see for all Americans, whether disabled or able-bodied.
It has been a lifelong struggle (I remember going to school board meetings to fight cuts at the age of six) but one that has really taught me to fight, especially once I learned that the free market was more scared by the chair than impressed by the woman inside it.
After college, my search for a job went nowhere, even in the hottest economy of my lifetime—I hate to think what it would be like now but I did hear that I was brave to act like I had something to offer a few times. (Unfortunately, compliments aren’t great currency, so I still had to stay on benefits.)
That’s why I think it’s terrible that Trump staff like Kellyanne Conway are allowed to lie and minimize our concerns by saying other people, maybe the folks who were able to finally get care for chronic conditions from the Medicaid expansion (three friends-of-friends I can name off the top of my head, and, who are all employed,), can “just get jobs” that provide health benefits like she has. That way we can all pretend that health programs can work perfectly fine with $800 million of stuffing kicked out of them and that it’s perfectly fine for me to settle back and not worry about my neighbor because he has one more tiny set of options than I do. I’m sure I will have plenty of time to consider them all as I fill out my Trumpcare eligibility form every month, or scramble to find something to satisfy the exciting new “work requirements” that soothed some Senator’s concern, somewhere.
And, yet, awful as that stuff seems to me (and it does), it’s not the worst-case of being over fifty, perhaps, and needing more help, and having nothing to keep me in my home trying to live the life that I want. Attendants already have to scramble to make a living…how enticing will a lot of work for zero dollars be? It is so terrible that I work really hard so I don’t have to think about it as if failure isn’t an option."

2017 Dentistry in the Community Grant Spotlight: Arizona
Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health (ASDOH) was honored to have received the Dentistry in the Community Grant in 2017. When the applications rolled out for the national grants, we were having discussions with the organization Ability360 to provide an oral health event for them. We received the grant in early 2017, and we were on our way to change the world. Our program is known for its dedication to the community, and providing to the underserved areas of Phoenix is what we set out to do.
Ability360 is located in Phoenix and offers programs to people with disabilities so they may achieve or continue independent lifestyles within the community. We wanted to set up an event that would allow ASDOH students to provide dental screenings, oral cancer exams, fluoride varnish treatment and oral health education. This was a step up from our normal community service events, as we have not provided fluoride varnish treatment before.
We first volunteered at Ability360 by giving an oral health instruction presentation; we also attended a health fair they hosted and distributed dental supplies to the members. Jumping right into a dental screening event would have been a shot in the dark, and I’m glad we took our time to bring this type of service to them.
Yet two months after we received the grant, the event date still wasn’t set. There was a lot more work than initially expected, mostly because we were setting up a volunteer event that would provide a specific dental treatment for the first time. Making sure we had faculty present was essential, and that had to match up with times that we could reserve a room at Ability360. After multiple delays in our event, we finally set a date for Nov. 11, which is Veteran’s Day. We wanted to provide dental treatment to these members, specifically veterans who were a part of Ability360.
Our goal was to use our D1 and D2 class as the main volunteers and then have D3s serve as mentors during the dental screening process. We had a great number of volunteers: two D3s, four D2s and one D1. During the event, we saw that we weren’t only helping our patients but also these students. This was a great moment that ignited a love for community service within ASDA for some underclassmen.
Our event was a success, and we served the Ability360 community to the best of our abilities. In the future, we hope to bring more dental treatment to this population in Arizona. I believe that starting at a basic level and slowly progressing up is the way to bring care to underserved populations.
Our relationship has grown stronger with Ability360 because we received this Dentistry in the Community Grant from ASDA. It not only gave us the funds to buy our supplies, but it also provided support from national ASDA to serve our community.
