Exactly what I thought. The whole "you look like a badger" scene seemed like she preferred Anne didn't go meet the ambassador and send her instead so she could gain more power.
Both Sarah and Abigail were manipulative in that film - actually, everyone except Anne was!
And Anne was plagued by ill health and heartbreak over losing all her family either to religious differences or death, I'm surprised she didn't go mad because I would have went insane a long time ago if it were me.
I mean, even if Sarah Churchill did love (not just romantically or sexually or platonically but LOVE, RESPECTFUL LOVE…over and above simple deference to a sovereign) Queen Anne, I don’t think I would call Sarah’s cruelty towards Anne ‘honesty.’ The Favourite certainly didn’t position it this way, at least I didn’t get that vibe. When Sarah says that her spite was merely the honesty that comes as a trapping of love, it wasn’t true. She had behaved horrifically, sometimes. And this is true to life, this is one of the reasons Anne came to unseat Sarah in the first place; because she was tired of being cut down in public, called pathetic for grieving for her children etc. Now, I love Sarah and in the film, she was even more compelling. But her jibes came from a not very nice place…she was a bully.
And I think, ultimately, the movie came to the same conclusion I have come to from reading about Anne’s life: regardless of her sexuality and her obvious longing for a woman that truly reciprocated her love, what Anne really wanted in her life was all the children she lost. I think that’s who she misses at the end of the movie….hence why the rabbits take hold of the whole screen. Sarah is merely another person who has left her and become dead to her, and Abigail is on the brink of becoming dead to her. Anne was so tired on her deathbed, physically and mentally. It was said that no one had ever welcomed death as much as she did. The loss…it just built up.

The Favourite
I really didn't like the movie.
I don't think it was historical genuine. I don't understand how a Queen (like Anne) can be manipulated as easily as that.
Otherwise, the tactical strength of power between the two cousin is very interesting.
I don't understand Abigail wasn't attracted by her husband?
Some quotes:
"- Must you rub it in? (prime minister) - A man's dignity is the one thing that holds him back from running amok. Sometimes a lady likes to have some fun." (Sarah)
"- Of course. You are in favour. But favour is a breeze that shifts direction all the time." (Sarah)
"- Have you come to seduce me or rape me? (Abigail) - I am a gentleman. (Masham) - So rape, then." (Abigail)
"- Your tongue seems uncharacteristically still." (Anne)
"- Obviously, you still have some anger to expiate. I'll allow it this once." (Anne)

Heyyyy do u have any wlw/GL film recs it can be dramas movies anything at this point im so desperate 😭
Hello!!!! Thanks for the ask! I love the topic haha. I'm going to give you 8 recs, I hope you like them! (synopses taken from imdb) The Handmaiden / 아가씨 (2016) A woman is hired as a handmaiden to a Japanese heiress, but secretly she is involved in a plot to defraud her
I don't think I've watched this movie since it came out, so my memory is a little fuzzy. I remember thinking it was brilliant and entertaining; I found the plot and characters to be compelling and I was really rooting for Lady Hideko to get a happy ending. The cinematography is so delicious, as is the romantic tension between the lead female characters. However, I did find the sex scenes to be a little... not to my taste but my opinion might have changed in the last few years
Colette (2018) Colette is pushed by her husband to write novels under his name. Upon their success, she fights to make her talents known, challenging gender norms
A Historical biopic about the life of Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette. It's another movie I haven't seen since it came out but I also enjoyed it. Although married to a man (who is also a dickhead), Colette has relationships with women, most notably, Missy, who is male presenting. (I don't remember if Missy's gender is ever defined in the movie, so I'm not sure if "women" is the correct term to use when describing them. I might be misgendering them as the real-life Missy, Mathilde de Morny, did go by Max/Uncle Max in their later years.)
The Favourite (2018) In early 18th-century England, the status quo at the court is upset when a new servant arrives and endears herself to a frail Queen Anne
Here we have another biopic, this time it's about the relationship between Queen Anne, Sarah Churchill, and Abigail Masham. I adore this movie! It's soooo fantastic to see queer women be so ruthless, cunning, terrible and desperate. Gosh, I love how love and ambition are depicted throughout. It's fantastic! All three female leads are excellent.
Atomic Blonde (2017) An undercover MI6 agent is sent to Berlin during the Cold War to investigate the murder of a fellow agent and recover a missing list of double agents
Charlize Theron plays a bisexual baddie in a spy action movie where she is hunted down by James McAvoy?? Yes please and thank you!
Shiva Baby (2020) At a Jewish funeral service with her parents, a college student runs into her sugar daddy and ex-girlfriend
This is one of my favourite movies. It is a horror dressed up as a comedy. THE INTENSITY is sooo unreal that it inspired me to write an original story! I love everything about it! Plus, YES to bisexual and sex-work representation!
Bend it like Beckham (2002) Two ambitious girls, despite their parents' wishes, have their hearts set on careers in professional soccer
Yes, the main character ends up with the male love interest. But this movie is still soooo queer! Jess and Jules are gay for one another, I don't make the rules! Kiera Knightley wanted them to be together and so did everyone else. If they ever made a sequel (which they should), it could be about them reuniting and getting together. I watched this movie soooooo many times growing up.... lol Calamity Jane (1953) The story of Calamity Jane, her saloon, and her romance with Wild Bill Hickok
Another biopic but this time, it's a musical haha. Okay, yes, Jane ends up with a man and yes, the real Calamity Jane was married twice in her life to men. But when I watched this as a child, it awaken something in me. The movie is so queer-coded, I could see it even as a little child who didn't know what queer was yet. I haven't seen it in over a decade, maybe more, but it left a huge impression on me. Plus, The Windy City and A Woman's Touch are absolutely certified jams. (side note: when I watched A Woman's Touch for the first time, I remember thinking that I wouldn't mind living in a cabin with my best "gal friend" 😂) Now for a TV show I watched growing up (when I was WAY too young to be watching something so adult) that made me feel the feels:
Sugar Rush (2005) 15-year-old Kim has just moved to Brighton and developed an earth-shattering, hormone-surging crush on her new best friend, Sugar
Coming-of-age/ sexual awakening stories aren't always my thing anymore, as I don't care to watch teenagers exploring their sexuality but I watched this when I was 10(??), and it was very important to me. It's not a very good show and is probably considered to be super outdated now, but I found it formative. Plus, when I was growing up, there weren't any (not from what I can remember) shows or movies with a lesbian lead wanting to be in an interracial relationship with her best friend. It's an important part of queer TV history. Plus, it has Andrew Garfield playing one of the wettest male characters ever lol
Thanks again and I hope you like my recommendations! 😊
#ask answered#wlw recommendations#you can tell i grew up in the 00's in the UK lol#yeah some of these are more subtext/queer-coded than text but they were important to me#also what can i say? i like a biopic haha#thank you <3

How similar were the Bentinck-William-Keppel and Sarah-Anne-Abigail situations? I always found it amusing that more or less the same thing happened with two consecutive monarchs of Britain, right down to the persisting gay rumors, although I haven't looked that closely into Anne's triangle yet to see if that impression is warranted.
That's a very good and compelling question, thank you, @redladydeath! Truth be told, I'm not that knowledgeable when it comes to Anne, either.
However and please correct me if I'm wrong, I would say that the constellation was not quite so similar as it seems at the first glance.
There are a few importnt factors factors that should not be disregarded:
Period gender roles and -expectations: despite e. g. Sarah Churchill and Hans Willem Bentinck holding the same offices, their roles at court, and in a political and social context, in how far their actions were considered to be 'socially acceptable' at the time (e. g. Sarah Churchill could, contrary to a man of a similar background, not chose a parliamentary career and could only gain any kind of political participation through inofficial channels) cannot be quite compared to another.
William, as well as his friends, were considered to be foreigners by the social and political élites of England and thus met with some measure of prejudices and distrust, especially when William gave Bentinck and Keppel English titles.
William and Anne, as well as their friends, were fundamentally different people, who sought for different types of companionship, support and loyalty in these respective constellatons.
Another difference that I see is that as far as I am aware, the motives of the people close to the respective monarchs differed. Whereas Sarah Churchill genuinely enjoyed and sought political participation which she gained by having the ear of the Queen, Hans Willem Bentinck's foremost intention seems to have been that he simply wanted to be with his best friend, who just so happened to be the most powerful man in the country and would, as an added bonus, sometimes hand out lavish favours.
What I think sets the friendship between Bentinck and William apart from that between Sarah Churchill and Anne is that William was not looking for his closest friend to be his political advisor. While the two men were close and held a genuine and above all, strong affection for another, William expected Bentinck to know his place, and follow his orders.
It is however interesting to note that this seems not to have been true of their private life; Bentinck dared to oppose William on the matter of Keppel, left the court and his offices without William wanting him to, and according to one rumour, also gave William a piece of his mind on the theme of spousal infidelity when there was talk that Willam was having an affair with Bentinck's sister-in-law.
The two appear to have found a level of operating together in the political sphere with William in charge and Bentinck serving him not blindly and without question, but devotedly, whereas their private interactions are indicated to have taken place on a more near-equal level.
Anne on the other hand wanted her friends to be around her almost all day long to entertain her, and heavily relied on Sarah Churchill and her political acumen which in the end contributed to Sarah's falling out of favour when Anne grew to be displeased with the changing political scene and somewhat blamed Churchill for it.
To me, there are more similarities in Abigail Masham and Arnold Joost van Keppel-- although it should not be disregarded that Keppel was on good terms with Anne as well, despite having been close with the brother-in-law she had despised.
They were two younger people come into play in the wake of the respective monarch grieving their spouse; I recall reading about someone observing that Anne was displeased with Sarah Churchill for having taken a picture of her recently-deceased husband off the wall and considered her actions deeply intrusive; William, in a similar vein, seems to have looked for some distance from the friends he had shared with Mary (of which Bentinck was probably the one who had been closest with the late Queen), and, especially towards the end of his life, regarded Keppel as an almost son-like presence in his life.
As for Anne and Abigail Masham, their being not that far apart in age suggests that their dynamic was ultimately a different one, albeit having originated under similar circumstances.
So, all things considered, I think the unsatisfactory answer is "similar, but not that similar." If any of you reading this have any further thoughts and suggestions, especially if you have read into Anne and her friend circle more than I, please share them!
As for the rumours of alleged homosexuality regarding both Anne and William, a few closing thoughts. Firstly, I think it is important that we highlight marginalised people, or groups of people, from history. Yet this should be done faithfully, and without bringing modern labels or gendered behavioural expectations into play. It seems to me that often, the (presumed) sexuality or more genrally, the (alleged) sex life of historical figures is used as a sort of 'selling point' to market pieces of media (both fictional and [allegedly] factual) to modern audiences, usually because sex has somehow become a short hand for 'grown-up' and 'exciting', particularly in entertainment media. We should not sensationalise or embellish the orientations and sex lives of historical figures (or anyone, for that matter), and accept the facts at hand when we examine their lives. To me this phenomenon also lays bare a contemporary issue, namely, that with sex being regarded as a quintessential component of a compelling narrative, people, people living or historical who for whatever reason do not define sex as a prerequesite for a fulfilling relationship, do not wish to engage in sex for whatever reason or identify somewhere on the spectrum of asexuality are basically invisible. This is not about pitting orientations and/or preferences against another, but perhaps food for thought.

I’ve always sort of understood the ending of the favourite tbh but this rewatch has made me fully Get it.
anne’s reaction to abigail throughout the end scene is because she saw abigail squish one of the bunnies (who thankfully seemed to escape unscathed btw!) with her foot.
and abigail did that because she thinks she’s above the bunnies now. she was really kind to them before in front of anne, but now she’s managed to kick out sarah and basically become anne’s second in command, she thinks she’s untouchable and can do what she wants, even to something as special to anne as the bunnies.
and the stuff that follows is both abigail and anne realising that no. abigail isn’t above the bunnies, she’s basically the same thing as them. she’s only really considered important at this point because she’s a replacement for something anne lost.
the same way the bunnies are replacements for anne’s dead children, abigail is a replacement for sarah.
