WICKED (2024) dir. John M. Chu Deleted Scene — "Elphaba's Promise"

JK Rowling and Neil Gaiman have found themselves in a similar place, having their once beloved writing reevaluated after their public image takes a drastic negative turn. and I do think, for the record, there is a difference between the two.

A lot of the tells in Rowling's writing are political. It's very neoliberal, bootstraps, individualist, out of touch and full of racial and cultural biases in the way you expect an upper class white British woman to be. None of this is like, a secret, she's extremely literal in her writing, and it is in fact how she uses her power and influence. It's not revisionist to point this out, or to think that it isn't as good as it was believed to be, people were just given a reason to examine her work more critically, and they also, yknow, aren't children anymore. The fantasy Hogwarts invoked was always one of the biggest draws and reasons for its staying power, not really her prose or technical skill.

I do not think it's fair to say, however, that Gaiman's work should have tipped people off to him being an abuser and a rapist, or that it sucks, actually. We can gain more context and perspective on his writing knowing what we now know, but others have experienced the traumas Gaiman has, others have written stories like he has, and they did not choose to act in the ways Gaiman did. People like Gaiman and Palmer are able to build the exploitable fanbases they do because their art connects with vulnerable people. I think it's quite cruel to say to those people, "well, you should have known." We know what we do because victims were brave enough to speak out, and they don't deserve to have that diminished.
