Love the fact that Remmick is so fucking old. Based on the number of Irish cultural historians, you know that team knew about Irish vamps predating Dracula.

Watched the vampire movie Boys from County Hell, an Irish horror-comedy film that uses the local vampire legend of the Abhartach.
6/10 the humor didn't always land for me but not a bad vampire film.
I very much liked how the movie went 'you can't kill things that are dead' and stuck with that the entire film. Just straight-up vampires cannot die because *they are already dead* if you want to stop them you have to do the literal traditional tactics of securing them into a grave and making sure they can't get out.
The design of the original vampire, the Abhartach, was neat tho I do agree with the reviewers I watched stating that given the type of soil he was buried in the whole bog body thing doesn't make sense. Also liked that these were feral corpse vampires rather than sophisticated fancy fuckers but also they they weren't unintelligent either.
Also really like the thing they did with the Abhartach in that it doesn't need to even touch its victims. All it has to do is be close, not even inside yer house close, to make your blood leave your body and follow it back to its lair. Very nice, very magical.

The Abhartach: Ireland’s Enigmatic Vampire Legend
Many claim this Irish vampire dwarf myth was the inspiration for Dracula and other vampire tales.
From the description:
The Abhartach, an ancient Irish legend from County Derry, is depicted as an early vampire-like creature reflecting humanity’s fears of death and mortality. Originally a tyrant, he demanded blood from locals, causing chaos upon rejection. His story intertwines history and myth, serving as a cautionary tale about power and societal anxieties that persist today.

🔮 DARK IRISH LORE: PART IV - THE ABHARTACH 🔮
Meet Ireland's OG vampire who makes Dracula look like a dental hygiene enthusiast! The Abhartach—Ireland's answer to "what if we made bloodsuckers even MORE terrifying?" 🧛♂️🩸
This pint-sized tyrant (short king before it was trendy) terrorized Northern Ireland long before Instagram filters. A cruel dwarf chieftain with magical powers and a temper shorter than his stature, Abhartach had a nasty habit of returning from the dead when his subjects tried to, ahem, "terminate his employment."
After being killed and buried, he'd rise again the next day, demanding bowls of blood from his people's veins to sustain his undead lifestyle. Talk about a demanding boss! 🥣
The solution? A warrior named Cathain finally put him down permanently with a sword of yew wood, buried him upside down, and topped his grave with thorns. Medieval problem-solving at its finest! 🗡⚰️
Some say Bram Stoker borrowed this tale for a little book called "Dracula"—though Abhartach would definitely leave a one-star review for stealing his brand.
Swipe to witness our vision of Ireland's most bloodthirsty landlord, the fourth nightmare in our "Dark Irish Lore" collection!

Abarta
In Irish mythology, Abarth (Ábartach, Ábhartach, the one who creates deeds) is a god belonging to the goddess Danu's tribe.
One day, Abarth shows up in Phenicia's leader Finn McCullough's camp dressed as a man looking for work. After putting Abarth to work for him, the latter calls him "lazy servant" (Gialla Deacair). Abarth responds by giving a capricious grey horse to the wife of an Irish soldier as a token of his affection. However, the horse moves and gallops the riders to the afterlife after Abarth and fourteen warriors saddle it. Abarth accomplishes his original plan in this way.
Finn is able to reach the afterlife and release his soldiers from captivity with the aid of Foltor, the greatest Irish tracker.

Blood. There was so much blood. For a moment Mia couldn't comprehend the sight before her, her mind thrust into a state of shock at the sheer amount of viscera spread across the floor of living room. Her ma, pa, and twin brothers— their bodies hardly recognizable given the state of evisceration their corpses were in. A tremble, starting as a nearly indistinguishable rattle within her small frame, grew to a full on rattling of bone and flesh alike. Salted tears left naturally rouged cheeks stinging as they welled up within the rim of lavender hues and cascaded downward, dripping upon the wooden boards beneath. Once steady breaths devolved into unsteady pants which bordered hyperventilation as the situation fully settled into the conscious depths of her mind.
❝ Keep— Keep away! ❞ The cracking voice imbued with terror uttered while bare souls scraped against the wooden boards beneath, attempting to draw the young woman away from the twisted creature of a man before her. Her father should have never permitted him inside for Remmick had not been what he had seemed.

I know I've been insanely absent. Definitely not me intention, I assure ya.
But I have this sudden urge to take up Remmick from Sinners. Like at first it was this small crawlin possibility, because he plays so much how I see Ian were he all grown.
But now it is this overpowerin sensation that may have me submittin before this week is over. Am I weak for strong Irish characters in period drama horror ?? Plus his tie in as Abhartach ?
Guilty.

There is a place in the parish of Errigal in Londonderry, called Slaghtaverty, but it ought to have been called Laghtaverty, the laght or sepulchral monument of the abhartach [avartagh] or dwarf (see p. 61, supra). This dwarf was a magician, and a dreadful tyrant, and after having perpetrated great cruelties on the people he was at last vanquished and slain by a neighbouring chieftain; some say by Fionn Mac Cumhail. He was buried in a standing posture, but the very next day he appeared in his old haunts, more cruel and vigorous than ever. And the chief slew him a second time and buried him as before, but again he escaped from the grave, and spread terror through the whole country. The chief then consulted a druid, and according to his directions, he slew the dwarf a third time, and buried him in the same place, with his head downwards; which subdued his magical power, so that he never again appeared on earth. The laght raised over the dwarf is still there, and you may hear the legend with much detail from the natives of the place, one of whom told it to me.
— Joyce, The Origin and History of Irish Names of Places[1]

Alternate Version In some modern versions of the story Abhartach rises from his grave to drink the blood of his subjects,[2] while the chieftain who slays the revenant is named as Cathain. The hero variously consults an early Christian saint instead of a druid, and is told that Abhartach is one of the neamh-mairbh, or walking dead, and that he can only be restrained by killing him with a sword made of yew wood, burying him upside down, surrounding his grave with thorns, and placing a large stone on top of the grave.[3][4]

human remmick tidbits:
he was an older sibling. had a little brother who he loved very much. he was a fire keeper like sammie. this is how he knew about the existence of them.
said little brother was killed by an evil vampire. the same vampire that turns him and he ends up slaying. this vampire is abhartach. the legend surrounding abhartach was crafted and created by remmick since he is so old and he can do what he wants. some of the fandom seems to head canon remmick as abhartach himself but i want to be a lil different. he was a “hero” who ended up a villain himself. just as he was oppressed and ended up being an oppressor.
he was a Bard. that’s why he is so performative. he’s been a musician for 1000+ years in a way. bards in ancient ireland were not allowed to marry because they weren't allowed to procreate. did not stop him from trying to, however. his name was cathain.
#& what the hap is fuckening ( ooc )#picking and choosing which version of the abhartach myth to use for him LMFAO#will expand on these more in an actual head canon post

Fun fact: in Ireland, they have their own version of a vampire called "The Abhartach", and it is the very origin of the vampire myth. And it was said that it have been an extremely brutal and tyrannical ruler whose reign was marked by violence and fear. I would highly looked into The Abhartach since you mentioned you love vampires :D
Oooh. An Irish Vampire, huh? Awesome. How fun would it be to have different types of vampires from all over the world? (Though I think they already have their own version of vampires, so maybe)
