Reading (listening to, as Homer intended) the Iliad making me go oh. Ohhh. I should have done this before I read Gideon the Ninth. I get it now.

Particularly thinking now about the tidbit that in early drafts, our beloved gray-eyed Necromancer Warden of the Sixth House was named Diomedes Sextus. For Diomedes, king of Argos, young, brave, noble, heroic. Favorite fighter of Athena, bestest friend of Odysseus. And, notably, fought gods and—well he didn’t win exactly. But he got them good.

And specifically, he fought and wounded Aphrodite; Aphrodite, who is also called Cytherea.

And then of course Tamsyn Muir said she decided to change his name so she could make the Sex Pal joke.

Palamedes is a less heroic, less fondly remembered character in the Trojan War, but according to Plato, he unrelatedly invented both number and the alphabet, so you keep that connection to scholarship even if that’s not the first association with him. More interestingly, imo, there’s also an Arthurian Knight of the Round Table named Palamedes, best known for his unrequited love for Isolde (and his apparent ultimately gracious acceptance of her choosing Tristan).

I think this is actually a super interesting shift in thematic naming focus: from favored-of-Athena, fought-gods-and-wounded-them to unrequited heterosexual love, but didn’t act like a dick about it.

Kiriona-centric Locked Tomb fics I want to read but not write.

1. The Emperor's Construct

Timeline: post-HTN pre-NTN.

Setting: Antioch.

POV: epistolary fic narrated by the Blood of Eden soldiers unlucky enough to have to fight against Kiriona- unkillable, furious, Saddest Girl In The World Kiriona who spent her whole life dreaming of serving the Cohort on the frontlines. Kiriona, whose incorruptible body was dropped in rivers, left out in the sun, given to the carrion creatures to eat. Kiriona who still looks like her mother, imbued with all the hideous blessings of her father, fucking-out-of-her-mind Ninth House Big Pissed Off. I would kill to read this fic.

2. The Crown Prince

Timeline: Same as above

Setting: Antioch, Ida, and/or aboard the Dead Fleet.

POV: Kiriona as a Byronic Hero, apt pupil of the ideology of decadence, material excess, and artificiality. First or third person narration by Kiriona on her off-hours, enjoying the tawdry privileges of her rank as Crown Prince, heir to all the hedonistic masochism and moral decay of the Nine Houses, sitting through endless balls and dinners held in her honor. And afterwards- Kiriona fucking her way through literal frontline titties of the Fifth, feeling Absolutely Nothing because her body is dead and that blood isn’t pumping anywhere anymore. It’s everything she ever wanted and she can't enjoy it. It's a 5 course meal and she can’t taste it. She doesn't want much of anything, anymore.

I think there is a balance to take here.

I think she would be inclined to take care of people who are younger than her out of habit, but like. I don’t think that’s really all she should be doing. Canonically she does show concern to Levi when she notices him being uncomfortable, and her interactions with Marina really seem like big sister/little sister kind of interactions. She also does, canonically, say that in the future she does want to found a family with someone she loves.

HOWEVER I do agree that’s it’s absolutely not what her entire character is about and I do agree that people forget a little too quickly the non caretaker aspect of her character. Like, girl learns fucking astrophysics to be in contact with the moon. Her fucking dedication, please.

Also the thing that DOES irritate me the most is people forgetting about the whole themes of her being a victim of sexism because she is practicing a job that, at the time, was male dominated and considered a «man’s job». There is a ton of issues about flanderization of the characters in this fandom and it bothers me badly because I think not many people realize how exactly DEEP the themes can go on a single character, how many different interpretations you can find about one character’s backstory, their actions and their personalities, how they turned out to be. So it saddens me to see, once again, complex character being reduced to paper sheets when it comes to depth by the fandom.

my weird personal f&h complaint is that it really urks me to see ppl put abella into a maternal role with the other contestants because her entire backstory is about. how she was forced into the role of caretaker for her entire life. and didn't get the autonomy to decide her own personhood, even, really, after joining the NLU. so much fanworks being about her mommying others just feels like falling for the mask
