___
“Especially then.” Tommy grins, but then his smile turns into something gentler and softer. “You know you’re not, right? Too much for me, whatever that means?” His entire palm is cupping the side of Buck’s face now, and he looks serious, while still fond, his gaze so intense Buck kind of wants to look away, but finds it impossible, those blue eyes working like magnets. “I adore you. Evan. All of you. I want to know all the good, all the bad, and everything in between, and I want to- to cherish all of it.” He says, and Buck catches the hesitant moment, like he wanted to use a different word and had to take a moment to settle on this one. There’s a giddy, excited, hopeful spark igniting in his chest. “I already told you I want you, and that includes all of you. If you let me in.”

I hope to God that this show doesn't try to bring the Buckleys back just so they can be assholes to Buck about his bisexuality because this man doesn't need anymore bullshit from those two, especially now.
And if they do choose to bring them back for that which I fucking pray they don't, it better be so that Buck can finally and rightfully cut them off and Maddie backs him on it.

Heartbreak is one thing, my ego's another
Tumblr media
Summary: Luke meets your parents, which leads to taking a huge step in your relationship.
Track 2 of short n' sweet - please, please, please
Luke Hughes x gn!reader
Warning! Mentions of a embarrassing childhood story(that I have made up((it isn't that bad) 😔)
A/N: I have never been more tired but man is Hotch(from criminal minds) so damn fine in the earlier seasons- I miss him more every single day.
And I gave your parents names to help me keep track of them... guys say hi to Bobby and Athena(definitely wasn't taken from a certain fox/abc show about first responders whatsoever)!!
Tumblr media
You fixed your hair for what felt like the tenth time in the past five minutes. Luke groaned quietly besides you, wanting to do nothing more than to hold you.
Yours and Luke's relationship was fairly new, only ten months in, and you decided it was time for him to meet your parents.
"Are you done now?" Luke asked the question for the 3rd time.
You sighed. "Yes, I'm just nervous. Everything needs to be perfect."
Your parents were coming in to visit you since Luke and the team were staying home a couple of days.
"Everything is going to be perfect, no need to stress." He kissed the crown of your head.
"Well, I'm sorry for wanting my parents to like you." You joked, but it did nothing to ease your nerves.
The doorbell rings, scaring the two of you.
"Shit," you cursed. "They're here." You grabbed Luke's hand and took him to the living room but not before fixing his shirt and hair.
"My hair is fine, baby stop it." Luke swats your hand away.
"No, it's not," You continued to fix it before the doorbell rang again, and you sighed in frustration. "Don't touch it."
Luke rolls his eyes. "Aye aye captain."
You walked up to the door and were greeted by your parents.
"Oh Y/N there you are." Your mother smiled warmly at you.
"I was beginning to think we were at the wrong place." Your dad joked.
"Just had to fix stuff up is all." You said, but you didn't miss your mom's glance. "Not like that, mom!"
Your mom only chuckled in response, moving past you. "Now, where's this boy you keep talking about?"
"He has a name." You told her.
"Which is?" Your dad snickered at your mom's patience.
"Luke." He appeared from the bedroom. "Luke Hughes. It's a pleasure to meet you both, Mrs. and Mr. Y/L/N."
"Oh please, sweetie, call me Athena." Your mom looked at him warmly.
Your dad shook his hand. "Bobby is fine. No need to be formal son."
While they shook hands, your mom whispered to you. "He sure is tall."
"Yeah I know, you should see his brothers." You told her.
Your mother's eyes widened. "There's more??"
"Just two mom, both older." You answered.
"So tell me about yourself, Luke, Y/N was just telling me you had two brothers." Athena spoke.
The four of you guys recently moved to the kitchen as you got the plates.
"Uh yeah, two older brothers, Quinn and Jack. We actually live with Jack, Y/N cause I asked and me and Jack work together. He makes appearances here and there mostly to tease us."
"Yeah, siblings tend to do that." Bobby chuckles.
"You said you and Jack work together? What do you guys do?" Athena asked.
"Oh uh actually me and my brothers play hockey, professionally." He answered.
"So your other brother Quinn isn't on the same team with you two." Bobby put the pieces together.
"Yeah, don't get to see him much during the season, but during the summer, we hang out all the time." Luke adds.
You came back with plates, clearly struggling. Something that Luke had noticed.
"Hey baby, cmon, let me." He took two of the plates away from you and served your parents.
Your parents observed the scene with a silent conversation between eyes.
"I was doing fine, Luke." You sighed.
"You were totally going to drop the plates. You don't have to do things by yourself. You can always ask Jack and I to help, I tell you that all the time." Luke mumbles.
"Y/N was always known for being stubborn. It'll take them a while to finally let you help." Bobby reassuranced Luke.
"Yeah, like once when they were younger, they were so sure they were going to be a lawyer." Athena says an example. "But refused to ask for any advice from their aunt who was a district attorney, said they wanted to do it by themselves and didn't need help from anyone."
"Sounds like Y/N, alright." Luke chuckles but quickly stops when he sees your glare.
You noticed your parents seem to be welcoming Luke in with open arms, which was a shock, considering the last time you brought your ex home, they were furious. But then again, you were also a teenager. Now you're an adult.
Your dad seemed to catch the interaction between the two of you and laughed. "Don't be mean to your boyfriend Y/N." He scolds playfully.
"I wasn't being mean just warning him is all." You smiled innocently.
Now your mother started laughing. "We certainly raised them well."
"Yeah, no, we did." Bobby chuckles alongside his wife.
The four of you ate the meal with laughter and jokes till it was time for your parents to leave.
Your dad talking with Luke before pulling him into a hug, your mom pulled you to the side.
"He's good for you, Y/N." She said, you nodded.
"I know." You smiled softly.
"Don't let him slip through your fingers honey." She hugged you. "And let him help you from time to time." She winked.
You groaned. "I thought we was over that."
"Oh please we'll never get over that sweetie." She kissed you on the cheek. "We'll text you when we get back, love you."
"Love you guys, too." And with that, you shut the door.
"That went better than expected." Luke says beside you.
"If your definition of better is disaster. Just promise me one thing, baby?" You looked at him.
"Anything." He hummed.
You looked at him sternly. "Promise me you won't do anything stupid... like ever in front of me, or I will break up with you."
Luke chuckles. "Noted."

The one downside of this episode is i’m now gonna have to watch at least a full week of people going “oh so russell’s improved on the racism then” but it’s not about the accidental Mickey - stupid ape shit that he was called out on and had opportunity to fix and didn’t cus he’d ‘already started it’ and only later realised he should’ve listened to people after he’d colourblind-cast Mickey as black (including listening to the actor himself). No, it’s people to this fucking day not understanding the simple ABC Martha subplot because they think Ten’s flaws are the writer’s.
a) Ten tells Martha to “oh just walk around like you own the place”.
b) Martha is called a slur in that episode by the symbol of britain - Shakespeare himself. This showed that this was bad advice from Ten.
c) Ten not seeing Martha for who she is, ties into “not seeing colour” a thing actual progressives were trying to stop people saying at the time, that yes colour is important to note and was why Russell said there needed to be a black companion specifically when people complained and asked ‘why he couldn’t just hire the best person’. It comes to a head in the show when Ten gets Martha stuck in a hideously racist position because he did not see her as herself, a fact which is repeatedly shown to be awful and bad as she is mistreated and belittled, it is openly shown to be racist. The Doctor Did Bad by being all enlightened futurist ‘not seeing colour’ and therefore not seeing the reality the person he cared about was actually facing.
I have never met a single member of the general public who didn’t get that back in 2008 by the way. My grandmother got it. This is a solid fandom-based-brainworms lack of basic media comprehension.

Sebastian Sallow ABCs
Headcanons for our favourite freckled heathen 💚
A = Affection (How affectionate are they? How do they show affection?)
Holy SHIT this boi is affectionate. Constant hugs, cheek kisses, hand holding, even randomly picking you up off the floor to hug you from behind or throw you over his shoulder for shits and giggles. He’s got no problem with PDA’s and sometimes considers it a bit of a challenge to see how uncomfortable he can make others with how all over you he is. He’s a bit of a show-off and wants the entire world to know you’re his, and he’s yours.
In private, he’s just as affectionate, but considerably calmer. A moment not cuddling or kissing you is a moment wasted, and he’s particularly fond of nuzzling your neck, especially if it distracts you. He needs your attention like he needs oxygen, and he can get a little suffocating at times, but do be gentle with him if you need some space. He’s a sensitive thing, and craves your approval, even if he won’t admit it.
B = Best friend (What would they be like as a best friend? How would the friendship start?)
The best way to describe a friendship with Sebastian is chaos. He’s enthusiastic, cheerful, playful, and daft as a brush. He isn’t afraid of embarrassing himself for comedic purposes, loses games and playful bets with grace, and is freely giving of his time and energy to those he loves. He’ll do anything for you, but he does expect some level of reciprocation, and may become a little irritated if he feels he’s not getting the same level of commitment back after some time, even if he won’t ask for it. He’s used to people taking advantage of his kindness, but not his best friends.
He takes the time to learn about you, watching you carefully and asking pointed, sometimes blunt questions, though he will respect you if you decline to discuss certain topics. He’ll find out soon enough anyway, he’s remarkably easy to talk to.
If he wants something specific from you, he will badger and pester and poke until you give in or lose your temper – trying to talk him out of it rarely works, as he’s extremely good at manipulating conversations to his benefit, precisely because of how well he knows you. Don’t misunderstand, Sebastian doesn’t mean to do this maliciously – he’s very strong-willed and firmly believes what he’s doing is right, or necessary. Losing your temper with him will bring him back to earth with a bump, and he will be extremely apologetic. He means it when he's sorry.
If you need him for anything, he’ll be there for you, regardless of whether it’s venting to him about something, asking his advice, going on an adventure, or just having a little cry. He wants to be there for you, and will be, no matter what. He’ll take the fall for you if you get into trouble, but he never outright asks to be repaid for that, trusting you to help him out when he needs it.
He’s mischievous, cheeky, and a terrible influence. He’s hilarious.
C = Cuddles (Do they like to cuddle? How would they cuddle?)
All of the cuddles, all of the time, in any and every way imaginable. If he’s not flumped on top of you, he’s pulled you onto his chest so you can flump. His absolute favourite way to cuddle is his head on your stomach or chest, and you playing with his hair. It drives him wild, and if your relationship is at that stage, it won’t remain a cuddle for long. If you need to distract him, run your fingers through his hair, and he’ll be putty in your hands.
D = Domestic (Do they want to settle down? How are they at cooking and cleaning?)
Loves cooking. Hates cleaning. Laundry day is the WORST. Can’t bake for shit but will float around the kitchen if you do until you let him lick the bowl, then he’ll leave you alone for ten minutes. He works best if there’s some kind of routine, and you remind him (regularly) when it’s his turn to do the dishes. He’ll grumble about it, but will do a good job. He prefers it if you do household chores together, especially if he can distract you from it, or turn it into some kind of game.
He’d love to settle down with the right person, but only after a year or two of adventuring and exploring the world with you.
He’s indifferent about children. Honestly, he’d really rather not, he wants you all to himself, all the time, and he’s traumatised by his parents’ deaths and how he was treated growing up. Knowing how dangerous the world can be (and how much trouble you two can find yourselves in), he doesn’t want to risk having children, only for you, or him, to die. He knows how that feels and doesn’t want any more children to suffer it. But, if it’s what you want, he’ll eventually agree, and will be a caring father, even if he does miss the time when it was just you two.
E = Ending (If they had to break up with their partner, how would they do it?)
Being the fiery guy he is, there would be an argument. You’d have to do something pretty major for him to want to leave you, and he’d be devastated. Emotional. Shouting, and probably crying with rage and pain. He’d storm out, and he wouldn’t come back. He’d be heartbroken, but his pride wouldn’t let him return. If you want a chance at having him back, you’d need to go after him, but he’s stubborn. Even if it hurts him, if you hurt him enough for him to want to leave, his decision would be final.
F = Fiancé(e) (How do they feel about commitment? How quick would they want to get married? How would they propose?)
Seb tends to let his heart rule his head, and if he’s in love with you, he’s going to want that to be forever. He would want to marry you as soon as he was able to, regardless of whether or not he can afford to. Hell, he’d make you a ring of woven grass if that’s all he could manage, and to him, once it’s on your finger it would be more precious than diamond. He’d try and do the right thing, saving up and getting you a band of gold and gems, making sure he can support you, trying to plan the perfect proposal with Ominis’ help, but knowing him, “will you marry me?” will be at the forefront of his mind for months leading up to the actual event, and chances are he’ll blurt it out way ahead of time.
G = Gentle (How gentle are they, both physically and emotionally?)
He’s a firecracker, and sometimes forgets his own strength. He will try to be gentle and is extremely good at comforting you if you need it, but he can be pretty rough physically, without meaning to. If you’re arguing, he’ll say things in the heat of the moment that he doesn’t necessarily mean, and will regret it immediately. If he’s calm, he’s the gentlest person you’ve ever met.
H = Hugs (Do they like hugs? How often do they do it? What are their hugs like?)
He’s pretty touch-starved, and craves hugs from those he loves. He’ll accept hugs from those he doesn’t know so well, but he’s less keen. The first time you hug him will stick out in his memory as much as your first kiss, especially if you initiate. He’ll take the chance to hug you whenever he can, and his hugs are surprisingly tender. He loves resting his head on yours, or on your shoulder, and letting his weight rest against you if you’re strong enough to hold him.
I = Intimacy (How do they like to be intimate? Any preferences/kinks?)
Sebastian can best be described as a submissive-leaning-switch. As much as he loves to please you, he can’t help but lose his mind when you take control, swiftly devolving into a begging, whimpering, desperate mess. This is a side he only shows to you. On occasion, especially if you’ve spent the day teasing him and winding him up, he will be ferocious and take what he wants the moment he’s able.
He fully understands the word ‘no,’ however, even if he’s moments away from sliding into you, he will stop, as difficult as he finds it.
He’s open to exploring with you, save for the more extreme kinks. He’s not adverse to being restrained, and he’s almost embarrassed to admit how much he loves your hand on his throat.
J = Jealousy (How jealous do they get? What do they do when they’re jealous?)
He’s a freckled little green-eyed monster, this one. He won’t ever try and stop you talking to other people, and tries to see any flirting as playful banter. But, it doesn’t take much for him to see things as going too far, and he’ll always blame the other person you’re talking to, getting cross with them and encouraging you away, complaining about them as soon as they’re out of earshot. If someone oversteps their boundaries, he would hex them without a second’s thought, or, if he actually does take a moment to think, he’ll challenge them to a duel.
If you’ve been deliberately flirting to make him jealous, consider it mission accomplished. He will either whisk you away to make out with you or sleep with you to mark his territory, or he’ll sulk, and petulantly find someone else to flirt with until you get jealous. With his charm, it’s very easy for him to do.
K = Kisses (What are their kisses like? Where do they like to kiss you? Where do they like to be kissed?)
If you looked up the word ‘passionate’ in the dictionary, you’d see a picture of Sebastian. He loves bringing you close to him and holding you tight, tracing his lips over yours before moving over your cheek and down your neck. A quick peck will leave him breathless and wanting more, and he’ll take it if he’s got the chance. Your lips are his favourite thing to kiss, and if you’re intimate, he’ll lose his mind if you kiss his hips.
L = Love (When do they say ‘I love you?’ How are they as a romantic partner?)
When Sebastian falls, he falls hard. You take up every spare inch of his mind, often pushing aside other matters. He always wants to know how you are, where you are, who you’re with, and wants to be with you every moment of the day. He’ll be carefree and playful, doing everything he can to make you smile. If he makes you laugh hard enough that no sounds come out, he considers it an achievement and will strut around like a proud pigeon for the rest of the day.
Passion is Sebastian’s middle name, and this extends to him as a romantic partner. He loves like a wildfire, bright and fierce, all consuming. It can be exhausting, but he does appreciate the softer moments with you, and adores laying his head in your lap, or on your chest so you can play with his hair. If he’s not said it before, he’s nervous about telling you he loves you, just in case he’s made a mistake, and he’s got it wrong, and you don’t feel the same way. But he'll say it regardless, most likely in the heat of the moment, when you’ve fought off a band of goblins, or when he climaxes with you. He makes sure to tell you at least once a day, to make sure you know, and hearing you say it to him makes him grin and giggle like a kid.
M = Morning (How are mornings spent with them?)
This one is NOT a morning person. He hates waking up before eleven, and even then, it’s a struggle to get out of bed, especially if you’re with him. He wants to be snuggled up to you, halfway between sleeping and waking, forever. His favourite part of the day is when you’re sleepily nuzzling and cuddling.
If he’s forced to get up, he’s happy to just fall into his clothes and go about his day, preferring to shower and such before bed. He occasionally skips breakfast in favour of an extra half an hour in bed.
N = Night (How are nights spent with them?)
Sebastian is often up until the wee hours, reading and researching his latest passion. He appreciates the quiet and the still the night brings, and tends to be more active from 5pm onwards. If you’re a night owl too, he’ll relish being able to lean against you as he reads, and he adores it when you drift off in his arms, to the point he’ll toss his book aside and just hold you. If you’re more of a morning person, he’ll make an effort to keep to your routine, but if he's in bed before eleven he’ll be awake for hours, tossing and turning and unable to settle, unless you wear him out.
O = Open (When would they start revealing things about themselves? Do they say everything all at once or wait a while to reveal things slowly?)
He’s pretty open about most things, but when it comes to his childhood, especially with Solomon, he doesn’t talk about it much. If he does, he tends to speak of it as though he’s struggling with a difficult colleague, distancing himself from the relationship without realising it.
If you’re romantically linked, he will eventually open up to you about what he suffered. It’ll take a moment or two for him to get going, lots of false starts and uncertain words, but then it’ll all come tumbling out in a rush. He’ll speak for hours without realising it about all he went through, jumping ahead in the timeline, or back, depending on how the memories hit him. He may get jumbled, telling the story of one event, then switching to another because he's just remembered it, then falling back to the original story. Such is the way with trauma.
Any advice you give him in overcoming what he endured will be met with acceptance, and a willingness to try. He may become frustrated if it doesn’t work immediately, but he’s not one to give up, and he will see results eventually, finding it easier to accept what happened to him wasn’t his fault.
P = Patience (How easily angered are they?)
Hotheaded AF. Easily annoyed, easily angered, but just as quick to cool down. Will occasionally say things he regrets in the heat of the moment if he’s rowing with someone he loves, and against an enemy, he can be very cool-headed, but his anger will still take over and he can be quite violent. He gets frustrated easily, especially if he’s trying to do something important, and the results just aren’t showing, but he won’t give up. If anything, the frustration just makes him more determined until his goal consumes him. Best to head him off early or distract him.
Q = Quizzes (How much would they remember about you? Do they remember every little detail you mention in passing, or do they kind of forget everything?)
Sebastian has a very good memory for detail, considering the amount of time he spends researching. He’ll often surprise you by bringing up some tiny thing you told him years ago, something you may have even forgotten yourself. He can be distractible and distant if he’s caught up in something, but you’re important enough to him for him to set whatever he’s involved with aside, and he’ll remember what you need him to.
That said, if he needs to remember something he really, really doesn’t want to do (like going to visit your horrible great aunt felicia or going to the dentist) he’ll quite conveniently ‘forget’ and plan something else.
R = Remember (What is their favourite moment in your relationship?)
He couldn’t pick if you asked him. Everything about you is precious to him. But, if push came to shove, he’d remember all the times you stood by him, stuck your neck out for him and supported him when no one else did. The moment he realised he was in love with you will stand out in his mind until his last day.
S = Security (How protective are they? How would they protect you? How would they like to be protected?)
Sebastian is wildly protective of you, and will often try to get in front of you if you’re battling poachers or other enemies, even if you’re a more powerful fighter. His protectiveness can border on possessiveness, and he’ll get angry if you’re hurt, throwing out ideas of revenge that won’t really go anywhere. He’d wrap you up in cotton wool if he could, but at the same time, he adores the danger the pair of you get into, especially as it’s quite the aphrodisiac for him once you’re both victorious and safe.
If you get protective of him, it’s a little confusing for him at first, but he quickly adapts to loving how much you care. He’s rarely had that before, and it means the world to him that you’d stand up for him.
T = Try (How much effort would they put into dates, anniversaries, gifts, everyday tasks?)
Sebastian puts a surprising amount of effort into his dates and gifts, trying to make each experience unique and special. That said, once he finds a formula that works, he tends to stick with it, varying it up a little here and there. When it comes to you, no effort is too much, but he never goes overboard, understanding that too much can be off-putting.
He’ll always see something through to the end, regardless of the task, unless it’s something he truly wants to avoid doing, and then you’ll have a very difficult job in finding him until he thinks the ‘danger’ has passed.
U = Ugly (What would be some bad habits of theirs?)
Personal space? What’s that? Sebastian’s visceral need to be with you at all times can be suffocating, and you get the feeling he’d follow you to the loo if you let him. He understands the need for personal space, and alone time, and he’ll respect it if you put your foot down, but he needs reassurance that you’re still his, he’s still yours, and you’re not asking to be apart from him because you’re growing tired of him.
He’s very nosy, and if he thinks you’re hiding something, he’ll pester and pry for an answer, especially if he’s worried about you. It all comes from a place of love, but his insecurities, growing up as a twin and his love of knowledge makes him want to know everything.
Jealousy: Sebastian’s jealousy can be overbearing at times, and he doesn’t even know he’s doing it. A gentle, but firm conversation is needed to make sure he learns to respect your boundaries. Credit to him, once he knows what your boundaries are, he will respect them.
V = Vanity (How concerned are they with their looks?)
He’s cute and he knows it. Sebastian’ll make an effort with his appearance, of course, but only to the point to make sure his hair is brushed, his teeth are clean and his shirt’s not inside out. He’s got a kind of casual grace, and with his frame, everything seems to suit him. He does care what you think of him, though, and if you tell him something looks good on him, you can bet your bottom dollar he’ll be wearing whatever it is until it’s worn to threads. Compliments on his appearance mean a lot more coming from you.
W = Whole (Would they feel incomplete without you?)
His world would end without you. If he lost you, for whatever reason, he would spend the rest of his life trying to find a way to bring you back, even if you die. And if anyone could succeed in this regard, it would be Sebastian.
X = Xtra (Random headcanons for them)
He won’t admit it, but he’d do anything for a bar of Honeydukes’ Best Chocolate. Think Scooby Doo and Scooby Snacks – it’s that level of ‘I want that in my tummy.’
Despite everything he’s been through, he’s resolutely cheerful, to the point it’s almost unhealthy. If he trusts you enough to cry in front of you, that’s a sign you’ve found a friend or lover for life – he doesn’t even cry in front of Ominis.
His bond with Anne mimics the usual twintuition – they have a way of knowing what the other is thinking, feeling or doing, even if they’re apart, which is partly why he was so desperate to cure her, he could literally feel the pain she was experiencing; knowing it was so much worse for her than the small twinges he'd occasionally get made him almost mad with fear for her.
Y = Yuck (What are some things they wouldn’t like, either in general or in a partner?)
You’d need Anne’s approval – if Sebastian’s twin doesn’t like you, that’s going to be a problem. He trusts her opinion. If you don’t like her, he’ll lose interest faster than if you’d shat directly on the dining room table.
Sebastian’s always up for a joke and banter, but he doesn’t like cruel humour that’s designed to upset someone else to make others laugh. Bullies make him angry, and he doesn’t want anything to do with a bully.
Z = Zzz (What is a sleep habits of theirs?)
Sebastian’s sleep is troubled, especially after Solomon, and considering that it's pretty much established that he didn't have his own bed in the cottage (though this has enabled him to fall asleep literally anywhere). His childhood is full of trauma, losing his parents, the abuse he suffered at Solomon’s hands, Anne’s curse… as he tends to push things down and try and be cheerful, this comes out in nightmares. He occasionally wakes up screaming, even though he tries to pretend it doesn’t happen. He sleeps better when you’re holding him, and if he manages to process his trauma, he’ll sleep through the night. He falls asleep very easily, but he’s a light sleeper and will wake up regularly.

Tom Seidmann Freud (1892-1930)
Tom Seidmann Freud, nee Martha Freud, a children's book illustrator and author celebrated for her deceptively simple yet modern style. An eccentric niece of Sigmund Freud, she was born in Vienna in 1892 and moved with her family nine years later to Berlin. She was an artistically gifted child, at fifteen changed her name to Tom (allegedly to avoid sexism she might encounter as a female artist). She eventually studied art, first in London and then in Berlin and in Munich, where she focused on Art Nouveau illustration.
From 1914 to her death at thirty-eight in 1930, she published nearly a dozen books of her own and contributed illustrations to others. Today, nearly one hundred years late, her artwork looks surprisingly contemporary with its simple, folk art aesthetic and fantastical story lines about rabbit words, talking fish, and magic boats. Her illustrations are childish but not babyish, and surreal while also being thoughtful and narrative.
Strikingly fresh in its day, Seidmann-Freud's work was an example of how seriously people took children's literature as an art form. While Seidmann-Freud wrote, and illustrated her own stories, she also illustrated classical fairy tales, such as those by Brothers Rimm and Hanns Christian Andersen, in her Ten Tales for Children. She released her most well-known children's book, Die Fishreise (The Fish's Journey), in 1923.
Seidmann-Freud created her illustrations using the ancient pochoir technique that was experiencing a revival. She drew the figures, foreground, and background with ink and then overlaid watercolors using stencils. Seidmann-Freud experimented with several different kinds of children's books, including ABC books, songbooks, game books, and movable books such as Das Wunderhaus (The House of Wonders, 1927) and Das Zauberboot (The Magic Boat, 1929), subtitled "a book to Turn and Move." She also produced a series of counting books known for their typographical innovation, one of which was chosen for the Museum of Modern art's 2012 exhibition Century of the child: Growing by Design, 19000-2000, in New York.
In the early 1920s, she and her husband, writer and journalist Jakob Seidmann, founded publishing house Perergrin Verlag in Berlin. It was named after the main character in The Fish's Journey, who seeks to overcome his outsider status by escaping to a dreamlike utopia. Tragically, the demise of their publishing venture in the wake of 1929 global financial collapse led to her husband's suicide, and in 1930, to her own. (Their seven-year-old daughter, Angela, went to live with Tom's sister, the actress Lily Freud, and her husband in Hamburg, before they all moved to Prague in 1939. Angela, (Aviva) emigrated to Israel just before the outbreak if Word War II).
Seidmann-Freud died the same year that the liberal democracy in Germany, the Weimar Republic, started its frenzied downward descent. Until Hitler took dictatorial control in 1933, her work continued to receive accolades from her peers, including the legendary literary critic and philosopher Walter Benjamin. Because she was Jewish, however, by 1933 her books began to disappear.
Despite the Nazis destruction of "suspect" literature, and her untimely death, copies of her innovative children's books have survived as an important part of the history of avant-garde book-making in twentieth century Europe.

hi mom! i'm starting uni in september, i'm moving to a new city so i need to start shopping and all, but also my parents didnt really give me advice and im the eldest so im kinda lost, do you have any advice?? XX
Hello darling,
The ABC:
Uni is scary because your free-will goes from 8 to 90 in two months and freedom is intoxicating. Making up for lost chances can lead to bad choices (spending, dating, partying).
If your family failed to parent you, it is now your job. Autonomy is essential. Learn to cook, budget, clean, be clean, save, be a good citizen, make scary phone calls, keep yourself safe, prioritise.
No one will force you to get up and study, or hire you at 21 when competing with a bright 18 year old. Effort will not betray you (being a grown lazy gifted child will).
Have shared hobbies, from movie Sundays with a girlfriend to knitting with your sister. A social life is a happy life.
Trust your body, it knows. Stomach cramps mean we hate him, daydreaming means try, yawning means bed, not coffee.
The home:
Make a cleaning schedule, be open-minded and reasonable, do not do or say anything your landlord wouldn't like (I fully recommend having roommates once for exposure therapy).
If you have a neighbour your age, introduce yourself. Having that phone number will one day mean not having to sleep outside or getting a package stolen. Thank them with food.
Start documenting problems right away (photos, timestamps, screenshots, testimonies) as you may need to take action later. No emotions, you're just "worried about everyone's wellbeing".
Mould, vermine and leaks are enemies. Act yesterday.
Avoid big purchases. You don't know what the future (location, size, taste) looks like. Go secondhand, neutral, practical.
Avoid silly purchases: streaming, takeout, drinks, fast fashion. You will not regret having a downpayment saved in ten years.
If you ever need to do emergency laundry, put a bin or a bucket in the shower, add water and detergent (+ soda crystal for stains or whitening), wait an hour, rinse, wring, hang.
The shopping:
My grandmother has kept her house clean with a broom, bucket, squeegee broom wrapped in a floorcloth and Marseille soap since the 60s. When something doesn't work, look back.
Must-haves: cleaning (see #1 + cloths, soda, lemons, white vinegar, steel wool), hygiene (scraper, net, shower head filtre, first aid), night (good pillow, plugs, mask) supplies, freezer if possible, water filtre, reusable period protection, winter clothes, long chargers, sunscreen, friend living at home who will lend you tools.
Must-not-haves: anything trendy, collections (even books), a pet - don't let Felix keep you back, sleep over and study in Paris!
Have an emergency kit (+ whatever you need) + a smaller version in the car/at the office (with cash).
Fresh fruit, starches, a few types of frozen vegetables, of cans of legumes, of fresh, canned and frozen protein, a treat, something fun once in a while to experiment + a (bi-)monthly outing.
A couple of formal outfits. Large black dress pants, white shirt, dark grey thin jumper, pencil skirt, blazer, large coat, trench coat, loafers, heels, tall boots. Never slouchy or skin tight, plain.
Craigslist, Facebook marketplace, thrift stores. Spend a few hours making a perfect home board on Pinterest instead of listening to TikTok and taking what Ikea gives you.
The social life:
Make one or two real friends and cherish them forever. Support each other, travel, buy a house together, idk.
Don't be afraid to be/do things alone. You shouldn't be afraid of what your head says when it's not distracted.
Don't miss out on huge opportunities for people. Some are around out of necessity and will ghost you after graduation.
Do not try to impress, especially people you don't like and who don't like you. Do not do or say anything cops wouldn't like. Be a homebody who doesn't drink if that's what you want.
Do not try to educate those who will not learn.
Do not befriend someone who lacks confidence as they will make you pay for their jealousy, nor someone who wants a free therapist. Those relationships will be one-sided.
Befriend a couple of older girls. They will see through the lies of the people (men, classmates, employers) trying to fool you.
The love life:
The thirty-two year old man doesn't find you mature, he finds you inexperienced and malleable. Don't try meth thinking you're special enough to not get addicted.
If a date mocks you and you get mad, either that is who he is or he hates you. If you got mad, he is not for you. Your job is not to pretend you don't care so he can have a girlfriend.
Ask yourself if you would tell your best friend, mother, Taylor Swift, that he (hers) didn't mean it like that. If not, take a break from dating and think about why you think you don't deserve respect.
Don't forgive what you don't want to tolerate.
Don't try to force a relationship with someone who made it clear that he is, for whatever reason, not interested. You will be played like a fiddle until he meets someone he wants.
Don't try communicating with someone who is messing with you on purpose. No one ignores you for three days or sleeps with your friend or breaks your favourite necklace after an argument by accident. Also, your husband would never.
The daily life:
Have a clean e-mail address (firstname.lastname) for official biz and a casual one (f.lastna) for everything else, a solid password (Lanadelrey1984#) - change it yearly - and a list of the usernames and passwords you didn't pick.
If you don't trust your parents, block them off your account or open a new one when you turn 18 before they rob you.
Save a year worth of expenses, don't purchase what you couldn't buy twice now, don't replace what still works, give yourself week-long thinking periods before spending.
Get folders for your paperwork and keep them safe + take pictures for an encrypted Drive (beware of iCloud): diplomas, flat, car, big purchases, work, taxes, health, etc.
Print pics and make albums. One day, the app will die.
Mind your health. Exercise weekly (cardio/strength, ex: runs + weighted Pilates), walk, get more water, sleep, and fibre, take vitamin D, mind your eyes/ears/skin/teeth, stretch, leave.
Only invest energy, money, or time into what is worth it. FaceTime before the date. Get secondhand leather boots instead of replacing plastic. Drop the book after 100 bad pages.
Refuse conversations with people whose lives you wouldn't want, who happily overwork for a mediocre wage and don't know how old their children are. The handcuffs are homemade.
The job:
People will not forget how you made them feel and the world is a small place. Colleagues, clients, bosses will gossip: make sure it is for good reason. Dress and look clean, stand straight, be on time, never ever gossip, even when you were wronged.
Understand the power of sobriety. Be known for the success of your last project, not your bright skirts or temper.
Protect future you so you get the promotion/project/raise. No friends, no enemies. Smile, have neutral answers, make them talk, move on, make your IG private, google your name.
Lie. You don't avoid them, you eat lunch with your nana (hi Paula, no, I forgot about the hairdresser's), weren't unemployed, your father was ill, cannot go out, you have a birthday party.
Act boring with the jealous old woman or the obnoxious man. Take the fake compliment for a real one, don't understand the innuendo, have too much work to chat. Bullies get bored.
Instead of clapping back (see #3), be Cinderella, who ignores the insults and turns to Mr. No nonsense, who has been there twenty years, worryingly asking if Ethel is okay, I don't know what to do (no mention of ego, you're just distraught about her).
Sites to look up: Proton (mail, VPN, drive), Notion.
Love,
Mum
(PS - apologies if the she/he thing doesn't match you, this is a flexible plan for all of my children)

I am so fucking pissed. We’re hearing forecasts that we might get FIVE FUCKING INCHES OF SNOW overnight from Monday to Tuesday. In ALABAMA, where we have no snow removal equipment. Like I think we got one bag of sand for the whole town. No snow tires, I don’t even know what those are. This isn’t cute “Haha it’s just barely below freezing! Snowball fight!!!” snow. This is 14° Fuck (-11° Come the Fuck On) snow. FIVE INCHES? We get flurries and the city descends into madness.
What if we lose POWER. Everything runs off USB cord stuck in the outlet charging nowadays. This is why everyone used to run out and buy Milk Bread Batteries. Listen. I have this memory of the power going out during this wild snowstorm when I was a kid--I want to say it was Winter Storm '93. Ask anyone who lived in Alabama at the time. Like we had Desert Storm '92 the military operation one year and Winter Storm '93 the next. It was that serious in our minds, and I'm not sure you can blame us:
The storm dumped several inches of snow each hour on Birmingham, which ended up with officially 13 inches of snow.
Due to the high winds some parts of Birmingham reported drifts 5 to 6 feet deep. One state trooper reported that the roads were in the worst shape he had ever seen. "People can't tell what's road and what's not."
Low temperatures during the storm were in the 5-to-10 degree range on that Sunday.
IN A TOWN WHERE WE DON'T KNOW WHAT A SNOW PLOW IS. I think we had one for the entire county. Like I'm only kind of joking here.
And our power went out.
The snow was so heavy that it pulled down power lines either by its own weight, or by the tree branches its weight broke off. Meanwhile, the power at my house already went off every time a squirrel sneezed. I don't how many days this lasted; it was probably like, 2-3 days, but in my head, I was 14 years old boxed up with my family with no heat and it lasted two weeks. Maybe three years. The four of us slept in sleeping bags layered with quilts, huddled on the floor around a wood burning fire. (In the haunted house, no less.) The carpet was really nice, at least. We had a--do people still call them boomboxes? A big portable cassette player--battery-powered--with AM/FM radio. We listened to whatever TV shows were broadcast from the ABC station at night. We did have hot water; I took a lot of hot baths. We cooked food over the outdoor grill (which we moved to the comfortably large area under the deck, to hold off the falling snow), sometimes using aluminum foil as a kind of thin impromptu frying pan, and kept perishables like milk and meat in a cooler. Oh, did we have a bag of ice for the cooler? No, we used snow. God knows there was enough of it. Of course, I'm sure the refrigerator was perfectly serviceable even without power, because it was TEN DEGREES FUCK ALL.
I remember going outside a good bit and playing, as much as a teenager plays, in the snow with my seven-year-old sister. I remember that all the neighborhood kids got big rubber trashcan lids and used them as toboggans, going up to the top of the hill on our street and pretty successfully sledding down. Maybe it was "lmao snowball fight!!" snow when I was 14. I'm 45 now, and the cold makes me hurt. It makes me hurt all over. Maybe Winter Storm '24 will be a fun core memory for my nephew. I am pissed. And also charging all my electronics.
(ETA: It’s ‘24 now, isn’t it. My brain hasn’t clicked the date over yet. What is time.)

NSFW ABCs - Nick Sturniolo
Tumblr media
Masterlist
Taglist
A = Aftercare (what they’re like after sex)
He’s surprisingly uncharacteristically soft and cuddly. He’s only ever little spoon when they cuddle after sex.
B = Body part (their favorite body part of theirs and also their partner’s)
His favorite body part of his is hair. He love the feeling of his partner holding and pulling his hair. His favorite body part on his partner is his chest. He likes touch his chest while he rides his partner.
C = Cum (anything to do with cum, basically)
Cum is disgusting to him. He believes he is too good to have something like cum on his body. He always asks his partner to cum down his throat.
D = Dirty secret (pretty self explanatory, a dirty secret of theirs)
Sometimes when he jerks off he’ll pull his own hair and imagine it’s his partner.
E = Experience (how experienced are they? do they know what they’re doing?)
He’s moderately experienced. Like on a scale of one to ten he’s a sold five. Maybe even 7 if they’re only doing oral.
F = Favorite position (this goes without saying)
Cowboy. He likes to get on top. Honorable mention to doggy style because it’s better for hair pulling.
G = Goofy (are they more serious in the moment? are they humorous? etc.)
He is very serious in the moment! He thinks about the moment and the moment alone. He makes sure to be focused in order to do everything right and perfect.
H = Hair (how well groomed are they? does the carpet match the drapes? etc.)
While not covered head-to-toe in hair, there is a happy trail leading down to well-groomed, slightly trimmed pubic hair. He keeps himself groomed.
I = Intimacy (how are they during the moment? the romantic aspect)
He’s very serious. He gets down to business and becomes a machine, doing everything as he is supposed to working very efficiently.
J = Jack off (masturbation headcanon)
Refer back to his dirty secret.
K = Kink (one or more of their kinks)
He likes to spray his cum all over his partner’s pecs and abs. He also really likes to have sex in front of a mirror and with his music playing in the background.
L = Location (favorite places to do the do)
Bedroom. Only in a bedroom. He may on a good day give his partner head in the kitchen or something like that.
M = Motivation (what turns them on, gets them going)
Nick loves loves loves being praised.
N = No (something they wouldn’t do, turn offs)
Nick just really hates stupidity. If you do some really dumb shit without even thinking - he gets severely turned off.
O = Oral (preference in giving or receiving, skill, etc.)
Nick loves to be face fucked. He wants his partner to grip his hair and slam slam his member down his throat, again and again. He'll also happily face fuck his partner, although he prefers he puts in more of the work and lets him relax.
P = Pace (are they fast and rough? slow and sensual? etc.)
Nick has been known to be a little rougher. He’s definitely an aggressive power bottom.
Q = Quickie (their opinions on quickies, how often, etc.)
Absolutely his efficiency often leads to everyone cuming very quickly.
R = Risk (are they game to experiment? do they take risks? etc.)
Literally no. He would hate to be found in a compromising position AND not know what he’s doing.
S = Stamina (how many rounds can they go for? how long do they last?)
Nick can go on average two or three rounds without penetrative sex and one or two with.
T = Toys (do they own toys? do they use them? on a partner or themselves?)
Nick doesn't own any toys, although he's always been open to trying them and will gladly if his partner asks.
U = Unfair (how much they like to tease)
Nick is such a tease. It takes him some time to get comfortable enough in the relationship to tease but once he does…he loves it.
V = Volume (how loud they are, what sounds they make, etc.)
Nick is pretty quiet, he tends to hold back a bit. Half the fun though, comes from dragging every little noise out of him. The best ones are the small breathy moans he makes and the half-choked groan when he comes.
W = Wild card (a random headcanon for the character)
Personally I think he’s a rigger. His partner needs to be open to being his ropebunny.
X = X-ray (let’s see what’s going on under those clothes)
Nick has a 7 inch cock that he's quite proud of.
Y = Yearning (how high is their sex drive?)
His sex drive is pretty middle of the road. He is however immediately turned on when his partner initiates.
Z = Zzz (how quickly they fall asleep afterwards)
When he bottoms he falls asleep quite fast, he'll get tired as soon as his partner pulls out. Otherwise he’s not very sleepy at all.

Of all the bullshit I never expected to be back on with the same intensity of October through December of 2000, Beetlejuice was not it. But I finally got to see the musical yesterday, and the part of me that has adored all 94 episodes of the animated series from the moment I started watching them on ABC Saturday mornings in 1989 just fucking flared—this fond, awful tightness in my chest. It’s the first TV show I ever imprinted on; it’s been with me since childhood. Surreal.
About 4 years into watching the cartoon, I finally saw the live-action movie that the cartoon was based on. I hated it, because it was so malevolent and empty compared to the incredible world-building characters in the animated series. Serious shout-outs to Stephen Ouimette and Alyson Court for all that stunning, hilarious, and often moving voicework.
Now, okay, I need to go back to 2000 again to make this all make sense. I’d watched the show from 1989 until whenever the 4th season ended. It wasn’t until I was in my first semester of college, newly transplanted to New England, that I found a couple folks within my program who had loved the show growing up, too. I ordered all of the episodes on VHS. It was difficult to track them all down in 2000, and it was expensive. But I pulled it off, and we had Friday night watch parties for weeks over the month of October. But that is not where this ends.
I was in the process of winding down the writing I’d been doing on Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow for the entirety of my senior year of high school. Suddenly, I’m in college and watching this fucking cartoon and thinking, there is so much heart in this. How the fuck is there so much heart. I haven’t seen two characters this wholesome codependent in, well, ever. I went looking for forums and mailing lists devoted to the cartoon. I found a mailing list. There were a handful of artists drawing amazing fancomics on there, and they were like, what do you do? Oh. I write. And they were like: do you understand how desperately some of us have wanted fic, but just can’t find it?
That is the wrong thing to say to me when I’m on a downward spiral of realizing I’m not going to escape a fandom without getting myself into a project so long that it’s all I’ll be doing for fucking months on end. If you’re one of the people who knew me back then, you know what I did for those four months in the fall/winter of 2000. I wrote a novel. Sure, I came close to failing a couple of classes, but it was the first time I understood exactly what I was capable of building as a fanwriter. Maybe even as a real writer.
“Time Will Tell” was hosted on a friend’s Angelfire site for a handful of years. People found it via LiveJournal, too, because I linked it there. I put it on AO3 somewhere circa 2012 and took it down again in 2017 because I didn’t feel there was enough interest in it, and also, my 19-year-old editorial foibles and typos were aspects I wanted to amend in it.
The musical took more inspiration from the cartoon than the film. I’m stunned and grateful for that. I found the “Time Will Tell” file buried pretty deep in my Gmail folders. I’ve been reading it since the drive home last night. I just can’t believe there’s now enough of a fandom for me to consider finally polishing it and getting it back online. It’s one of my two oldest surviving pieces of writing.
Anyway, sorry for the Gotham fic delays that I’d been trying to get a handle on. Now that the semester’s over, I feel that getting this thing I wrote twenty-three years ago back to the light of day is the best use of my time for a couple weeks.
If you’re one of the people who read “Time Will Tell” back in the day, thank you. I don’t know how many people out there still remember it beyond maybe ten or so friends I’m still in contact with all these years later. I’m sorry it disappeared for a while.

“You Have The Right To Remain Silent” - Beau Arlen x Reader
Part 2 of the “Guardian of the Gulch” Series (Read Part 1 Here)
Rating Teen
Beau Arlen x Reader (eventually)
Tags: Fluff and Flirting
Word Count: 2200
There's a new sheriff in town. And he just so happens to have parked his RV in your campgrounds. What's a park ranger to do with all that Texas charm strutting around on a fine pair of bow legs?
I'm participating in @jacklesversebingo and this part will fill my "Fire and Firelight" square.
Image created in Canva (credit for photo used: “Big Sky”, ABC)
Tumblr media
You were patrolling on foot. It was the third of July. The sun had set. The sky was a watercolor swirl of pinks, purples and blues. The temperature dropped maybe ten degrees from the afternoon. You guessed in about half an hour your jacket would need zipping.
You shouldn’t have made eye contact with Linda. To be fair, she had marched right up to you in the path so there wasn’t any way you could ignore her.
Corey had asked you, Marie, and Elwood to stagger your shifts for extra coverage around the campsites over the rest of the week. In case anybody got a little extra randy with their Independence Day festivities.
Corey had been surprised you’d agreed to some late-night hours without that much of a fuss. The holiday pay was enticing enough. He didn’t need to know the chance to see Beau Arlen at campsite 15 was a personal bonus.
Unfortunately, you had to pass by campsite 14 and the Devonshires to do that.
~
You shake your head, sure you hadn’t heard Linda Devonshire correctly.
“I’m sorry, what is it you think Sh-” you halt, remembering not to mention Beau’s law enforcement title “-Mr. Arlen is doing?”
“You know, pot,” she whispers and raises two pinched fingers to her mouth and mock inhales.
You stifle a grin. There’s a ten percent chance Linda has dabbled. Donning what you hope is a serious looking stare, you nod slowly for added effect. “Mary Jane?” you ask.
“Yes. I’ve been smelling it since he’s been back.” She crosses her arms. “Can you arrest him?”
The laugh can’t be held back this time. “I don’t have the ability to arrest someone. But, we can give the authorities a call, if we have our suspicions.”
“I’ve read up on it. It may be legal to use in Montana, but not outdoors and in public spaces where impressionable children are only a stone’s throw away.” She sweeps a hand over toward her family plot.
“You’re correct about the legalization law.” You smile. “Thanks for keeping an eye out for the well being of our visitors.”
“Happy to help.” She smiles back, all accomplished and proud, then trots off to her RV.
Linda was right. There’s a smell as soon as you round the back of the Devonshire’s camp site and tread closer to Arlen’s.
But you know the odor. And it isn’t marijuana.
He’s not outside. There’s a small part of your brain that thinks maybe you round the site and head back to report on your findings to Linda. It might shut her up for a while. But, you realize that’s a ridiculous leap. Instead, you decide to pay the sheriff a house call.
You tap on the door with a friendly knock. In no time it opens outward and a wide smile greets you.
“Ranger.” Beau is in jeans and a pale blue button up. The shirt is untucked and a bit creased. His hair is a little mussed.
He looks yummy.
“Beau.” You nod. “How are you this evening?”
“Not in trouble again, am I?” he asks, looking hopeful with a tilt of his head. You can’t quite tell if he wants to be reprimanded. And that gets all sorts of untoward thoughts in your head. You blink in quick succession to try and wipe them from your mind.
“Not unless you’ve been smokin’ skunk.” You deadpan.
He shakes his head and grins. “Not lucky enough to have any of that lying around. No, I ran over some fresh roadkill that I ID’d of the black and white striped variety a little too late. Lucky me, that smell followed me home.” A finger waves about the outdoor chairs. “Don’t want to be outside tonight.”
Your nose crinkles. “I don’t blame you.”
“Still working?” He frowns along with his question.
“Some overtime. Celebration shenanigans and all.”
He nods in understanding. “Yeah, we’ve had to stack the station too this week.” His brows raise. “You want to come in and do a thorough search?” Leaning down, he whispers, “In case Linda’s watchin’?”
“That’s mighty nice of you to let me take a peek without a warrant.”
“An amenable criminal. That’s me.” He waves you in.
You step inside. The trailer isn’t stuffed as much as it is lined with the life of the Sheriff. The sliding door of a closet is open. Inside, his array of jackets hang along shirts with some filing boxes filling up space beneath it all on the floor. There’s a strong temptation to slide the door to the other side and find what you suspect is rows of cowboy boots. His cowboy hat rests on a hook by the entrance. The airstream contains all the basics one person needs. Food prep area with a bit of cabinet storage and a tiny counter, sink and cooktop. At the other end past the closet, and another door that is most likely the bathroom, you spot a bunk bed. The top bunk is being used for clothes stacking and storing other odds and ends.
When you’d stopped at Dewell & Hoyt Private Investigations the other day, Cassie hadn’t been there. But, Denise, receptionist and knower of all the things, greeted you with a smile and a cup of coffee. You’d caught up with her and got your fill about “Bobo” - Denise’s nickname for Sheriff Beau Arlen.
There was an ex-wife who had a new husband. Beau had a teenage daughter with the ex. Ex-wife, new hubs, and Beau’s daughter had all moved to Montana about a year ago. They weren’t that far from Helena but far enough from Houston, Texas. The city in which Beau Arlen lived and worked. Taking over the sheriff duty for Tubbs wasn’t appearing to be an entirely altruistic favor.
You realize how much stock you're taking of the man’s state of living and attempt a friendly nosiness. “Are you ready to plant some roots and find a place in town?” Your gaze trails back to his face at the end of your questions. He’s been staring at you with the kind of intensity you think he saves for witnesses to a crime.
He shakes his head. “Nah, not yet. Haven’t been lookin’ to be honest.”
You squint. “You know, you’ve only got a few more days in the campgrounds.”
“At this campsite.” He emphasizes. “If I coincidentally happen to move to a new site while Corey happens to forget the fourteen day max stay every thirty days…” He shrugs. “Accidents happen.”
You chuckle. “Negotiating any discounts in the process during all this happenstance?”
Beau laughs at the insinuation. “Hey, I’m payin’ for my stay fair and square.”
“Of course, Sheriff.” The playful tone in your voice has Beau raise an eyebrow, which then makes you clear your throat.
Those green eyes rivet you in place as his expression softens. “Actually, I’m hoping my daughter might be staying with me in a couple weeks. We’ve camped in this tin can a bunch of times.”
“Oh?”
He smiles. “Emily. The one Denise mentioned to you.”
Crap.
“She said you stopped by the office earlier in the week.” He walks and talks his way to the kitchenette, which only takes about two steps along those bow legs capped with pointy leather boots. How much more Texas cowboy billboard can he be? He’s a lite Marlboro Man without the cigarette odor. And there’s nothing unpleasant about the way he smells. Whatever cologne he wears lingers in the RV. The small space amplifies his inviting scent and nature.
You are crushing way too hard and way too fast for the Sheriff. You know this because you’ve obviously lost a few seconds staring at him. And he’s apparently asked you a question and is waiting for the answer. “Sorry?” you stammer.
He pops a little smirk as he’s haloed by fluorescent lighting. There’s only a couple inches of headroom between him and the ceiling. His freckles are on full display. “Have you eaten dinner yet?”
Your head shakes. “No.”
He grumbles more to himself. “Damn. Would have been a perfect night for it then.”
You know you didn’t miss that much of the conversation. “Huh?”
He beckons you with a hand. Following his direction and closing the distance, you see a small tray with two cedar planks soaking in water. Out of a mini fridge disguised as a cabinet he pulls two neatly wrapped brown parchment packages. The distinct smell of seafood wafts out along with them.
“Is that…” you stop yourself from daring to assume.
“Salmon,” he finishes, sighing with obvious disappointment. “I was gonna fire up the grill and see if I could tempt you over with a taste test. See if it measures up to back home. But the smell won’t make for a pleasant cooking or dining experience out there. And I don’t have anywhere to eat in here.”
You swallow down wanting to ask why he would be thinking about your food  conversation from a few nights back. Why he’d go to all this thought and trouble? But you don’t. Because you’re extremely grateful he hasn’t asked why you’ve been getting details on him through the locals without coming to the source.
“Maybe it’ll keep until tomorrow. If you’re available for dinner, that is?” Beau asks.
You smile. “I’ll do you one better.”
~
Elwood owed you. You reminded him of that when you requested the favor. He was a good ranger. But the kid was chronically late for his shifts at least once a week. You’d been covering his ass since he began working at Black Sandy six months ago.
So, Elwood was now adding your corner of the park to his security sweep. You were taking an extra long break at one of the unreserved campsites. Far enough away from the watchful gaze of Linda Devonshire and the stink of skunk.
You’d given Beau instructions to meet you at a certain time and damn if the man wasn’t punctual. He strolled up, illuminated by the flames from the fire you’d stoked in the designated area.
The cooler he holds bops a bit with each step. Boot heels settle in the dirt with a swish as he shuffles.
You try your best pensive and serious stare. “Were you followed?”
“Don’t think I’ve got a tail.” Beau grins and places the cooler on the ground. “I could hear Linda on the phone in her trailer when I tiptoed past.”
“Good.” You smile.
He stands tall and takes in the scene. “You weren’t kidding about handling everything and me just bringing the food.” He gestures at the small portable grill.
“I’ve always got camping stuff in my car. Ranger brain.” You state and point to the empty camp chair next to the one you’re sitting in. “You can settle in after you get the salmon started.”
He chuckles. “Yes, ma’am.”
Your heart stutters at the way he teases you with the formal address. You don’t know this man well enough for it to feel this easy and familiar. But you trust your gut and relax.
“Sure you aren’t gonna get in trouble?”
You shrug. “I’ve got the sheriff to vouch for me if I do.”
He rubs his hands together. “Alright then.”
~
Beau Arlen looks even prettier in the firelight. It complements his demeanor. He’s as warm as the flickering fire you both sit around, feasting on the grilled salmon he’s prepared. The orange-yellow glow from the flames dance over his frame. It adds to that little dash of mystery about him that’s so enticing.
Yeah, you are the moth in this scenario. You take a sip from the bottle of pop. Beau offered a beer but considering you’ve got a few more hours on the clock, it’s probably best to steer clear of alcohol.
“Sorry I couldn’t manage the asparagus and mashed potatoes.” Beau chews, thoughtful, his gaze darting from your face to your plate and back again.
“Do you seriously feel there’s any need for an apology?” You swallow the mouthful. “The salmon is moist and flaky and so tasty.” After the compliment, you dare and prod him. “I’m wondering what I did to deserve such special treatment.”
He gulps a bit of beer and leans back. His long legs stretch out by the edge of the firepit. The plate balances precariously atop thighs, tucked into the space created by his bow legs. “You do a great job taking care of this park. Hard work deserves special treatment now and again.”
The blanket of night and the warm glow of the fire hides the blush coloring your cheeks. You’re extremely grateful.
“And, well,” he clears his throat, “I’ve enjoyed your company. Figured offering a favorite meal would ensure another opportunity.” Firelight sparkles in his eyes along with a heated, serious stare at you. “I also thought you wouldn’t be averse to seeing more of me” –he lifts a shoulder– “considerin’ you had a lot of questions for Denise.”
Your tongue trips over itself. “Beau… I… you…”
He raises a hand. “Darlin’,” he murmurs, “just remember you have the right to remain silent. Or I may end up holdin’ a lot of things against you.” He grins.
You are without a shadow of a doubt being hit on by Sheriff Beau Arlen.
“Way I see it,” he continues, “we should spend some more time together. When neither of us are workin’. So I don’t feel like you're being hospitable just out of duty and you don’t think I’m interrogating you like a suspect.”
You smile. “That sounds an awful lot like a date.”
He nods. “I accept.”

Tease Tidbit Tuesday
Tagged by @jeeyuns (early but its already Tuesday night for me-it's that NZ time)
This is a secret fic that I started yesterday and only one person knows about it 👀 And if all goes to plan I'll be posting it in the next few days...
He shoves his phone back into his pocket and heads for his truck. He throws his useless toolkit in the back seat before getting behind the wheel. It only takes him fifteen minutes to get home and he really wishes that he lived further away from his aunt. He sits in his driveway for a conspicuous amount of time but he can't seem to get his legs working, something akin to panic making his body feel like lead. Buck will be texting him any minute now, asking where he is, he knows how long it takes from his Tia’s, which seems like intimate knowledge but Buck’s been intertwined with his family for about as long as he has known him. Just last week he’d helped Eddie fix Tia Pepa’s back fence and afterwards they had driven home in Eddie’s truck, Buck behind the wheel and trying not to be distracted by Eddie’s hand on his clothed cock. Buck had definitely run some reds and almost caused a fender bender but it had only taken them ten minutes to get home that day.
It was supposed to be a funny, lighthearted fic but it's by me so of course it's got some angst.

COVID isolation continues four years later for some residents at higher risk - Published Aug 30, 2024
Sara Anne Willette has spent more than 1,620 days in isolation since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The New Jersey resident took health precautions in public before the pandemic because of her common variable immunodeficiency, which means she doesn't make enough antibodies to fight infections.
Simple tasks like going for a walk down the street or taking a trip to the grocery store are laden with safety hurdles and anxiety for Willette.
Stressful tasks, like moving from Iowa to New Jersey during the pandemic for her husband's new job, are now even more taxing. The two drove overnight to avoid crowds at gas stations and rest stops, and she's prepared to do it again. The substantial health precautions in her day-to-day life are forcing her and her family to pack up their life once more and look for a new home in the countryside.
"I'm angry that society is largely inaccessible and I have to risk my life for the bare minimum, like medical care," Willette told ABC News in a phone call. "Why live in civilization if all of it is completely inaccessible?"
More than four years after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Willette is among the immunocompromised and disabled Americans who've complete changed their way of living to survive.
Her anger was tinged with disappointment as she talked about how the rest of the world has gone back to normal despite the hundreds of people across the country dying from COVID-19 each week amid a summer surge of the virus.
COVID-19 has also been a debilitating event for tens of millions of people who have or are currently experiencing long COVID, which in some cases has been defined as a disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act. With some lawmakers beginning to propose mask bans in hopes of reducing crime, it's no longer an option for some to live life normally among the rest of society.
Willette was among the people ABC News checked back in with after previously talking to them about isolating two years after the pandemic began.
Finding a new normal There are simple joys that Willette misses: having a garden, running, walking, letting her dogs run without a leash and drinking coffee on a porch.
She's planning on moving to the mountains -- somewhere between New Hampshire and Virginia -- and gaining enough acreage to allow her and her family to embrace the activities they lost during the pandemic. However, being alone out in the countryside isn't the goal for Willette.
Rather, she intends to build a pathogen-aware community. That means buying enough land so other disabled, immunocompromised or health-conscious able-bodied people who don't want to get COVID-19 can join them and create a home of their own.
"We want something that feels like normal but is set up in a way that we decrease harm for everyone in the community," Willette said. "We can't do that in an urban area or even in a suburban area. There are too many risks."
Her mother and mother-in-law intend to move and join Willette, her husband and her son on the property as well.
For Charis Hill, a California resident who has a systemic inflammatory disease and takes immunosuppressive medications, it's been hard to access an in-person doctor's appointment since many safety precautions for COVID-19 are no longer being taken in medical care facilities.
As someone with "high-level medical needs," the lack of COVID precautions has even made seeking routine care a challenge.
"Just the fact that a medical environment that is supposed to know what a virus can do, most medical environments no longer require masking, and that's what makes it unsafe for people like me to go, for anybody to go," Hill told ABC over the phone.
"The impact of the delayed care, where people can't go get routine care, that's going to affect the whole health care system. Emergencies happen because of delayed care."
Despite the stress and forced isolation, they find moments of joy growing their own food in their garden, and stay busy by working to reduce the local feral cat population through Trap-Neuter-Return practices.
They break their isolation monthly to meet at a park with a close-knit circle of friends who take similar safety precautions -- they're all masked, socially distanced and have tested beforehand.
"That's really the only way for me to meet strangers and also to make new friends," Hill said.
Mask bans would further bar immunocompromised people from public life, according to Hill.
Such bans "make it unsafe for us to exist," Hill noted, because people may feel pressure not to wear masks when they're sick or if immunocompromised people are worried about backlash for doing so.
With more people testing positive for COVID this summer, and with the fall and winter virus season ahead, Hill says society's "new normal" should involve free testing, vaccines, access to at-home antiviral therapy paxlovid and flexible hybrid working options to mitigate the spread of illnesses.
"We need a new normal, and a new normal that is equitable for everyone, and that not only prioritizes high risk people, but that also reduces infection overall," Hill said.
COVID concerns for the immunocompromised population Immunocompromised people -- about 3% of the adult population in the U.S., according to the National Institutes of Health -- continue to face potentially serious medical complications or death when it comes to COVID-19. Even for those who were not previously at risk now have seen life-changing heath impacts.
"Long COVID can happen to anyone, and I have certainly seen young, healthy, vigorous athletes have prolonged, debilitating symptoms from long COVID," Dr. Jeannina Smith, the medical director of University of Wisconsin's Transplant Infectious Disease Program, told ABC over the phone.
However, society has largely appeared to have moved on. The CDC stopped recording some COVID-19 related data and some politicians have proposed mask bans as a potential solution to crime.
"It takes us a step back for public health," Hill said. "We have other pandemics that are coming, and it's going to make it harder to reenact mask mandates if we need them in the future."
For the immunocompromised, regular society could seem like a minefield, according to Dr. Cassandra M. Pierre, the medical director of Public Health Programs and the associate hospital epidemiologist at Boston Medical Center.
She noted that people at higher risk for complications "are still, unfortunately, in our hospitals today. We see that they have this forced risk of going on to develop critical COVID or potentially even die. This is still occurring. COVID is still happening."
This is all happening despite a better understanding of disease transmission and the information needed to be better equipped to empower communities to protect their health, Pierre added.
Patients have been harassed or mocked for wearing masks in public, Dr. Jeannina Smith noted, despite international and national medical organizations emphasizing the importance of mask wearing as a mitigation tactic for illnesses. Hill has experienced this first hand.
"You can't look at someone and know that they're receiving immunosuppression for an organ transplant or an autoimmune condition, and they remain at risk," Smith said.
"Even if you don't have individual risk, any person can still spread COVID to someone who has higher risk," she said. "In fact, much of the spread continues to be from asymptomatic person. The very idea that we would criminalize wanting to protect our fellow citizens is pretty horrific."
The federal government has recently changed its tune amid the summer COVID spike and is preparing for the upcoming fall and winter season by approving and granting emergency use authorization for updated COVID-19 vaccines and restarting its free at-home COVID tests program.
