ARC Review: Breathing Underwater
Seventeen-year-old Tess Cooper lives by three train hard, study hard, work hard. Swimming is her best chance at a college scholarship. It’s what her parents, her coaches, and even her best friend expect from her—and Tess can always deliver.Until tragedy strikes. Tess has a seizure, and her world suddenly becomes one of doctor visits, missed practices, and a summer job stuck behind a counter—not sitting high in the lifeguard chair like every year before.Instead, her spot goes to new guy Charlie. Sure, his messy hair and laid-back demeanor sends Tess’ heart racing, but this isn’t really the time. She’s got to focus on getting back in the pool—regardless of what her doctor or anyone else says.
My review:
Breathing Underwater is a slice-of-life novel with a solid disability plot focusing on epilepsy. The main character has to deal with the struggles of becoming sick right in the middle of training for Nationals for swimming, knowing that her entire life won't ever be the same again.
This book is a good book if you're looking for a well paced, not too heavy book about overcoming problems out of your control. The main character not only has to tackle her own feelings, but also those around her, some of who understand and some who don't.

Welcome to Letters2fiction!
The concept here is to send in a question or a letter request, and you’ll get a response from your fictional character of choice, from the list below. Please stick to the list I’ve made, but of course, you can ask if there’s some other characters I write for, I don’t always remember all the shows, movies or books I’ve consumed over the years and I’m sure I’m missing a lot 😅

Season 8 episode 7 of 911. I started watching 911 because of Buddie. I saw all these posts about the show, but specifically about Eddie and Buck. I thought to myself, wow here is a show with two men in a health loving and appears to be a sexual relationship.
What cable show is it on?! I was surprised it was on Fox! Made sense the show was picked up by ABC. I was happily pleased to see that although Eddie and Buck were though not in a sexual relationship, they appeared to be potentially heading there. As they’re clearly head over heels for one another.
But I also fell in love with the show because it is well written and well represented. Beautiful paralleling stories about the importance of each individual person to a specific time. It made me feel good to watch this imaginary world, where these group of people who although had their differences, they chose each other to be family and fought for that title daily. Sometimes quite literally.
Yet I’m not sure why this season feels flat to me. I’ve said this before. And it may be because I have to wait a whole week and I’m expecting too much. While before I plowed through the series like nothing because all of the older episodes were released already.
It’s not really flat, there was that big sweeping save Athena did copiloting a commercial airplane.
I throughly enjoyed all the other seasons. Heck I’m rewatching it. Currently on season 6 when Buck is in that fever dream coma. It’s a lovely written episode. And yes I cannot wait to see a substantial Buddie scene but that’s not all I am looking for. But also this season the parts not having to do with Buddie feel flat. Like it’s just filler. This episode was just meh.
We see Athena busting a ring of jewelry thieves using the dark web to recruit people. She appears to hurt herself somehow but I thought the reason was lame. Yes Angela Bassett is older but she looks amazing. She’s so fit and in great shape. It just wasn’t believable to me. But I guess they had to set up the scene with her rookie partner somehow.
So now I’ve just am looking for glimmers of thoughtfulness, if I don’t get an entire episode, story line or of someone being saved. Such as the touching scene between Athena and Hen having a discussion about getting older.
There is another scene where the Han’s have dinner with Buck, to see how he’s doing, only to discover he’s coping with the break up by baking. Buck tells them he’s doing that instead texting or calling Temu. I still can’t believed, Buck dated both Abbey and Temu. Like that stuff only happens to him. Maddie wisely advises him to move forward and not backwards.
Some scenes later Buck is cooking at the firehouse, then we see him have a similar conversation with the 118. Then Eddie and Hen steal his phone so Buck can’t text Temu, who Buck noticed was bubbling his phone. Buck is chasing Eddie and Hen in the dining/ living area. Eddie also refers to Buck as buddy, which made me smile.
Even Nash compared Temu to alcohol.
It’s interesting to me how everyone is telling Buck to move forward. Didn’t they like Temu? Wouldn’t Eddie stay out of it before? And how little Tommy knew about things in Buck’s life. I want to see flashbacks to the 118 saying they didn’t like Temu for Buck.
The rest of the episode is Athena realized the rookie partner is in over his head and the police academy should have not put him through, since he shoots a random lady he and his new partner we pull over.
The 118 return to the set of Hot Shots. They rescue an actor who Brad had stuck on a crane. Callum Blu (who is a nod to Oliver, hoping not an exact match), plays Brad brilliantly. He’s still head over heels for Bobby, so much that he wants captain doofus fired. I can understand. But Jo firehouse wants him. And Bobby wants to stay with the 118. Another thing the fans said was Brad’s character would be out in a coma like Buck was, so he can trail Bobby to be a better captain.
Side note what a stupid name for a television show. Did Taylor really write that book? Is she behind the creation of the show? I haven’t seen her on their tv’s for sometime now.
Nash gets pulled back into making things right between Brad and captain douche. They’re both a douche. I appreciated Nash telling them both off.
A very sweet scene between Jee and Buck baking. It was odd how Maddie and Chimney just dropped off their daughter with their uncle. But they figured Buck was still moping and baking. He could use some human contact. None Temu contact to be exact.
But no big stories with the other characters, so I am wondering if all the gooey writing is going to be for Buddie? I just expected based on previous episodes/seasons better thought out with how the stories were woven out. Maybe they weren’t expecting to be picked up and it’s all haphazard? I kind of felt that way season 7 tbh.
In season 6 episode 17 for example every call the 118 went on deleted back to what Eddie, Buck and Chimney all were coping with. I don’t know why in the newer seasons the emergency calls have not.

Downton Abbey stars-turned folk duo Michael Fox and Michelle Dockery have unveiled their new single, Starlight.
The track is a compelling, gritty American Western-inspired tune infused with the duo’s distinctive subtle touch of dramatic harmony.
Known by their stage name Michael and Michelle, Fox and Dockery first met on the set of the hit TV period drama, and soon discovered their shared passion for music – jamming casually in between shooting scenes.
The pair started playing regularly as a duo for fun and six years later signed their first record deal and debut EP, The Watching Silence, released via Decca in May 2022.
Speaking about the release of Starlight, Fox, who played Andrew Parker on Downton, said: “This is a song about getting out, fleeing in the middle of the night, taking back control of your own story.
“We heard parts of the delta blues when writing and saw images of the endless expanse along American roads.
“It is influenced by Delta blues, Arcade Fire, Bob Dylan and always Crosby Stills Nash and Young.”
Fox and Dockery are joined by Chris Mass, of Mumford and Sons, on percussion, Tommy Heap on piano and drums, and Carlos Garcia on guitar.
Starlight was recorded in Crouch End’s Church Studios in London, and was produced by Iain Grimble.
Fox added: “We wanted a song that felt really American, the idea of galloping through on horseback.
“We sat separately to write the lyrics, so it was very conversational. The lyrics were in conflict, her verse against my verse, and we tried to bring them back together and see what we ended up with.”
Dockery, who played Lady Mary Talbot on Downton, said: “It started with a very Western riff that sets the scene, like a Western film.
“It’s our favourite one to do live. We love it.”
Starlight is available now via Decca Records.

The Whitley would serve with Bomber Command and Coastal Command during the early years of the Second World War and was used in Operation Biting to help capture German radar. Used for special operations at RAF Tempsford the Armstrong Whitworth Whitley would also be used by British Overseas Airways Corporation.
Armstrong Whitworth Whitley
During the early to mid 1930s the Royal Air Force was heavily reliant on biplane aircraft and was urgently trying to modernise its aircraft. So with the issuing in July 1934 of Specification B.3/34 the Air Ministry were looking for a twin-engined heavy night bomber. Armstrong Whitworth's submission to this specification would be led by the company's chief designer John Lloyd. With design work in progress the need for more modern aircraft within the RAF was shown by an order for 80 Whitleys being placed seven months before the prototype flew.
The prototype would be ready for its maiden flight on the 17th March 1936 at Whitley Abbey with Alan Campbell-Orde at the controls, with power supplied by a pair of Armstrong Siddeley Tiger X engines. Its monocoque structure was made of light alloy, which saw Armstrong Whitworth move away from their usual steel tube construction. Trials of the Royal Air Force's new bomber were done in Autumn 1936 at Martlehsam Heath by the Aeroplane and Armament Experimental Establishment. A second prototype would have a specially written specification for it, B.21/35, and this made its maiden flight on the 24th February 1937, powered by the Tiger XI engine, and was flown by Charles Turner Hughes.
The Whitley would enter service during March 1937 with No. 10 Squadron based at RAF Dishforth receiving their first Mk Is on the 9th, to replace their Handley Page Heyford aircraft. Able to house a crew of up to 5, armament would consist of a single 0.303-in Vickers machine-gun in nose and tail turrets which were manually operated and designed by Armstrong Whitworth. Of the original order of 80, 34 would be Mk Is whilst the rest would be Mk Iis which were powered by Tiger VIII engines which featured a two-speed supercharger. A further order for 80 Whitleys was placed and these would be the Mk III. The armament on this new variant was upgraded, firstly the bomb-bay was changed to allow larger bombs to be carried, the nose turret was changed to a Nash and Thompson turret which was power operated and two more machine-guns in the form of 0.303-in Brownings were added to a new retractable turret underneath the fuselage.
Flying from Hucknall on the 11th February 1938 a Whitly Mk I was tested with Rolls-Royce Merlin IIs, however the programme was suspended after the second flight which had to be curtailed due to engine failure. After the test programme was resumed the aircraft was sent to the A&AEE at Martlesham Heath for further tests during April and May.
The next production version, which first flew on the 5th April 1939, was the Mk IV which featured a number of changes. The first change saw the aircraft now powered by the 1,030-hp Rolls-Royce Merlin IV engine. The second change saw a pair of wing tanks added whilst other changes included improvements to the bomb-aimers view with the addition in the lower nose of a clear panel. The armament for the rear gunner was also upgraded to four 0.303-in Browing guns in a Nash and Thompson power-operated turret. Powered by the 1,145-hp Merlin X seven Whitley Mk IVAs were produced alongside 26 Mk IVs.
Further changes to the design saw the Whitley Mk V appear which was to be the most produced version and would also be powered by Merlin engines. Once again fuel capacity was improved and extra fuel could be carried in the bomb-bay if needed. On the leading edges of the wings rubber de-icer boots were added. The rear of the aircraft was also redesigned to increase the rear gunner's field of fire, this would see the rear fuselage lengthened 1ft 3in. The fins was also given straight leading edges. In total 1,466 Mk Vs were built.
With the Rolls-Royce Merlin in demand for use in a number of aircraft a Pratt & Whitney powered Whitley Mk VI was considered in case Merlin engines became unavailable. In the end this proposed aircraft would never go into production. Based on the Mk V the Whitley Mk VII was designed for operational service with Coastal Command. This would see the installation of Air-to-Surface Vessel Mk II radar and the fitting in the rear of the fuselage and bomb-bay of additional fuel tanks. A total of 146 would be built.
Armstrong Whitworth Whitleys were in action with Bomber Command on the same day as Britain and France declared war on Germany, 3rd September 1939, when 10 aircraft flew over Bremen, Hamburg and the Ruhr in Germany dropping leaflets. It would be the Whitley that became the first Royal Air Force bomber to operate over Berlin, Germany when three Whitley Mk IVs from No. 10 Squadron dropped propaganda leaflets over the city on the 1st October 1939, losing one aircraft. Whitleys would also take part in the first bombing raid on Berlin, Germany on the 25th August 1940 alongside the Handley Page Hampden and Vickers Wellington. The type would also be called on the day after Italy declared war on Britain and France when on the 11th June 1940 raids were carried out on Genoa and Turin. However of the 36 aircraft that took part only 13, 36% of the total force, reached their target as both engine problems and weather hampered the operation.
With the Short Stirling and Handley Page Halifax four-engined bombers now in service and with the Avro Lancaster entering service the Whitley's time in Bomber Command was coming to an end. Its last official sortie took place on the 29th April 1942 with a raid on Ostend, Belgium. However Whitleys from Operational Training Units would take part in the raid on Cologne, Germany on the 30th May that year in the first ever '1,000 Bomber' attack codenamed Operation Millennium.
The Whitley would also serve with Coastal Command and its service with the Command began when No. 58 Squadron were seconded in September 1939. This would see them patrol over the English Channel until February 1940 when they operated as part of Bomber Command again. Other Whitley squadrons would also patrol over the Bay of Biscay. It would take over 2 years before the type scored its first U-boat victory when on the 30th November 1941 No. 502 Squadron sank U-205 in the Bay of Biscay.
The type would also be used for a number of special operations. These included Operation Columba which saw homing pigeons dropped over occupied Europe in the hope that people who came across the pigeons could provide intelligence on German military activities in the area. It would be on the 8th April 1941 that a Whitley would perform the first drop of pigeons for the operation. The aircraft was also involved in Operation Biting on the 27th February 1942 which saw them drop paratroopers at Bruneval, France for what was a successful mission to capture parts of German radar. Two squadrons, Nos. 138 and 161, would also serve at RAF Tempsford undertaking special duties. This involved supplying arms and equipment to the Resistance and transport agents by parachute drop into occupied countries.
Other duties for the Whitley saw it used as a glider tug and for parachute training. During May 1942 the British Overseas Airways Corporation received 15 Mk Vs which had their armament removed and fuel tanks added to the bomb-bays. These would be used by BOAC on their Gibraltar to Malta route.
By the time the last Armstrong Whitworth Whitley rolled of the production line a total of 1,815 had been built.

A Melancholy Centenary
Ardfert Abbey Last weekend marked the centenary of the final burning of a big house in County Kerry during the War of Independence/Civil War period, the property in question being Ballycarty, which lay to the south-west of Tralee and had been occupied by the Nash family since the third quarter of the 18th century. In total, 15 such houses in the county were destroyed during the period 1920-23, a…
