Wednesday, September 18: Abattoir, "Screams from the Grave"

“Screams from the Grave” was pretty much like literally everything else Combat Records put out in the mid ‘80s, which wasn’t a bad thing since thrash was exploding when Abattoir delivered Vicious Attack.  The tune was a total barnburner that hit the gas and blasted with energy, so much so that Steve Gaines’ yelping and hollering didn’t come off as over the top but rather felt like he was just trying to be heard over the maelstrom.  To some extent, “Screams from the Grave” could’ve only existed within this very specific time, place and context, but in some ways that was also why it continues to pack a mean punch.

Fellow horror nerds,

I’m watching Abattoir (2016). Directed by Darren Lynn Bousman. Starring Joe Anderson, Jessica Lowndes, Dayton Callie, and Lin Shaye.

I’d never heard of this film and am glad I’ve found it. I’m impressed. Was iffy with the beginning but it’s actually good. Old school detective noir kinda style of a supernatural horror story.

Just past halfway through right now but I’d recommend it. From one horror addict to another.

"COMPEL USE OF ABATTOIR," Ottawa Citizen. August 10, 1912. Page 13. --- New Health Act Places City in Position.

The one objection to the establishment of a civic abattoir in Ottawa has been removed by the new regulations of the provincial board of health, which have just been announced. It is now likely that definite steps will be quickly taken towards the establishment in the city of an abattoir with a view to ensuring a better supply of meat and regulating the price.

The matter has been before the city council on several occasions and the city has gone so far as to acquire land adjacent to the incinerator site, which would be an ideal location for an abattoir and cattle yard, lying as it does close to the railways and the Rideau river. Then the question was referred to Con. Parent and Dr. Shirreff, medical health officer. The latter, while he has strongly advocated a civic abattoir, said it would be useless to establish one unless the city had authority to compel people to slaughter their animals there. The city did not have that power and so nothing was done for the time being. The new regulations of the province provide that where a municipality has established a public slaughter house it may pass bylaws requiring that no carcass or meat shall be offered for sale in the municipality unless it bears the stamp of the local or Dominion or provincial inspector.

"This removes the one objection there was to the establishment of a civic abattoir," said Dr. Shirreff to The Citizen when shown the new regulations. He says he will again urge the city to establish one.

BUTCHERS WELCOME IT. With regard to the regulation as to the inspection and stamping of meat in cities where civic abattoirs exist. there is no doubt that Ottawa when it gets its abattoir will take advantage of the act and that the butchers of this city will welcome it.

Mr. B. Slattery said to The Citizen: "This is exactly what we want, and a civic abattoir without such a regulation would be worse than useless. The whole object of an abattoir would be that only inspected and approved meat could be sold in Ottawa."

Another authority on the question doubted whether there would be a single butcher in the city who would object to the regulation. "It is a pity," he told The Citizen, "that Ontario has not gone further and decreed. that every city of a certain size must necessarily have its abattoir. At any rate, if Ottawa gets an abattoir it must certainly have a regulation that all meat sold in the city be stamped by inspectors for the civic authorities."

Abattoir - The Only Safe Place. 12/08/1986

L'ancien abattoir se dresse avec deux visages, deux âmes aux atmosphères contrastées.

Le premier, au rez-de-chaussée, est celui que tous les Capistes connaissent. Il s'ouvre sur la route qui relie Audierne à Pont-Croix, révélant le centre technique, les pompiers, la brocante aux accents des années 70 et ATP Armor. Les camions y font halte pour livrer et charger les bières de la Pinte du Raz, utilisant encore les quais jadis dédiés à la logistique de la viande.

Le second, au rez-de-jardin, est plus secret, moins entretenu. Il se tourne vers un sentier discret, où les oiseaux nichent à l'abri des regards. Ce chemin conduit au Youtar, à la lagune du Goyen. La façade, craquelée et envahie par les hautes herbes et les plantes grimpantes, témoigne de son abandon depuis plusieurs décennies. Depuis deux ans, les côteaux de Lanéon, une association viticole, se sont installés sous un bail précaire. Les cellules juxtaposées servent également de stockage pour le service Nature du centre technique voisin. Là, sur les anciennes paillasses carrelées où l'on façonnait autrefois des saucissons, s'amoncellent des tas de bûches et des bouts de clôtures.

C’est dans une de ces cellules à la double hauteur, reliant les deux visages de l’abattoir, que s'est décidée la restitution de ces six semaines de résidence. Les réflexions collectives, les recherches de terrain, les débats passionnés autour de la gouvernance d’un futur lieu dédié aux entreprises nourricières du Cap Sizun y ont trouvé un écho. Un lieu où l’alimentation tisse une synergie entre nature et économie, entre terre et humanité.
