Aaji
KUROZ-WRITINGS
During hot summers I often think about Aaji. Her shaking wrinkled hands. The way the skin was thin enough to see her green veins but was soft enough to not pull away. How warm her hands were when she held my little ones. How she welcomed me with open arms and a smile. She somehow smelled like rain, all the time. We would sit on the cold, tiled floor of the flat and as she cut bright yellow mangos for me, the juices would dribble down her hands to the ground. She never knew a word of English and I could never speak my mother tongue properly, yet somehow in the time I spent with her, in the silence, I was content and understood that we were the same.
I remember when the time death came for her. I wasn’t allowed to say goodbye. Something about family feuds being enough to put such rules in place… I think life would be the same anyhow. If I was allowed to say goodbye, see her one last time as the cancer consumed her, she would have still passed away, and I would still cry in the middle of the night when I miss her. I would still think of her. Her shaky hands. Her white ringlets. Her pale wrinkled skin. Her warmth. There does not go a day where I do not. Every time I look in the mirror, I see her in my features. I see her in the way I stand. In the way my eyes crease at the bottom when I smile and in the way my lips curl.
My Aaji was an intelligent woman. Even if you could not talk to her, you would see it in way she carried herself, in the way she acted and treated others. You could see it in the gleam of her almond eyes. She had a way of teaching lessons without needing to say a single word.

Hands' play
A play i often see people do
A play of hands
How the bones and joints of the finger
Tell more than eyes
How they gracefully held the sail
When I was sailing in sunset
Hands tell experience perhaps more than wrinkles behind our eyes
Maybe it's a matter of debate
While carefully delicate Hands of new born
With their elder sibling
Holding them my their waist
The Hands that should be chasing childhood are nurturing
Or the henna stained Hands
Not knowing if it'll be as gentle as gentle love of amma who has often burned her hands due to oil splashes while making pooris
Hands are phenomenal when it comes to recovering healing cuts and wounds
Not even know how many secrets they're keeping safe while healing
Once gentle hands became hard and tough
With layers of calluses often scattered across the palm
Like scattered moments happy or sad angry or bitter stored in them
Look the tough hands of my aaji contrasting with wrinkly body that she has
Hands has helped me to sail through sunsets
And held secret hand shakes
Bled
Got secret
Gave strength
Held the loved ones
Let them leave when even when they didn't want to

WHERE: Pardeshi House WHO: Derek Pardeshi ( @endlessreruns )
"Dad, we're home!" Paisley called out, turning around to double check that the door was locked before kicking her shoes off and walking with her aaji into the living room. "Everyone at the retirement home says hi! Including one lady who asked me to add 'hot stuff' to the end. Did I teach her that phrase? Maybe. Maybe not. I plead the Fifth."

Aaji - My inspiration
The loss of someone close in your life is always painful. Today, I am not going to be talking about death but about the life of someone close to me and also about Breast Cancer , Aaji’s experience and all that I learnt through this process . My nani (Aaji in Marathi). She passed away on the 5th of April, 2024. My nani had breast cancer. It was detected in 2017. It was detected late and could not be treated with a strong dose of Chemo and also could not go through surgery at that time. I was in the 7th grade at that time. And we all were really sad. And at that time, I associated cancer with death and thought that it can never be cured (though it is true, but out of every 100 patients with cancer, there is always 1 who gets cured). She passed away a day before her 89th Birthday. That is right her birthday was on the 6th of April. I was sad that she passed away when she was so close to 90. But soon, I realized that there was a long time back when the doctor had told us that maybe a few months. But she lived for 3 years after that despite everything she went through. She did not leave hope even a day before her death. And that is a big accomplishment, given the circumstances.
But this is not what I want to remember her as. I want to remember her as my friend who saved me from mama’s scolding many times and who helped me with every little problem I had. Who read all the Harry Potter books, and we discussed them for a very long time. I will always remember how we used to make Modak every Ganesh Chaturthi and how despite not remembering many things she was the only person to remember the Ganesh Aarti. I till date remember her stories where she would add my name as the princess who was saved from the monster, what was special about the stories, was that she modified the stories to teach us some morals- it was not your basic princess taken hostage by a monster and is saved by the prince, she always made sure that we learnt something from her. There is a lot I learnt from her but the most important one is that if you put up your mind to it, then you can learn new things, no matter what your age is or the person you are learning from. The main thing is that you put your mind to it and take criticism positively. That is one important lesson that she has taught me, personally.
And I hope to do justice to everything she thought of me and what all she wanted me to be (career and personality wise). Every time I think of Aaji, I remember that she wanted to see me in a graduation hat and gown, and I will make sure that whatever happens I will do anything and everything to make that happen.
Ok. So, I think I have written a lot so that is all for today.
