Guardian episode 33 aftermath fic rec list

Those who know me know I am a whump enjoyer and a hurt/comfort connoisseur. So is it that much of a surprise that I am obsessed with episode 33, and even more obsessed with fics set in the missing moments after or during episode 33? *slaps roof of episode 33* this bad boy can fit so much hurt/comfort in it! I find myself coming back to these fics over and over again and since I am horrible at keeping track of my favorite fics, I decided to make a compilation of them. Mostly for my own benefit of having a convenient spot to find them when the craving strikes, but I thought maybe others would enjoy having a handy list, so without further ado, please enjoy, organized by word count and POV and with mentions of what particular brands of hurts and comforts can be found within.

Oooooooh thanks for the ask! Well I'm primarily a podficcer and not a fic author, so I'll answer with podfics. This was absurdly difficult to narrow down (since when did I end up with 80 works on AO3??), but here's what I landed on, in reverse chronological order:

the strange idea of continuous living by umadoshi @ysabet (Guardian, Weilan, 49 mins). I posted this shortly before 520 exchange dropped that year, so some of my Guardian fam may have missed it. This is one of my favorite Guardian stories and I had a lot of fun podficcing it, and really had fun with the music and sound effects.

build me no shrines by occultings (MDZS/Untamed, Wangxian, 8 hrs 51 mins) This is my longest podfic ever and I'm super proud of it!! Case fic with Wangxian and the Juniors going to investigate strange happenings at the Burial Mounds, plenty of angst and hurt/comfort and figuring out their relationship. This was a labor of love and I had a ton of fun voicing it and figuring out all the music and sound effects and stuff I wanted to play with for it.

Drowning in the Sun by Zelos @overzelos who for some reason I'm unable to tag here (MZDS/Untamed, Yunmeng Bros, 1 hr 22 mins) a delightfully angsty story about what would have happened if Jiang Cheng was aware but paralyzed during the Golden Core surgery. I worked insanely hard on the music for this one, even though it (hopefully) doesn't show in the final product, because I *really* wanted a version of Jiang Cheng's theme song played on dizi to match the theme of the story and there weren't any options that sounded exactly right, so I had to do a lot of futzing in editing. I'm so proud of the result.

in your skin by darkredloveknot (MDZS/Untamed, Wangxian, 1 hr 30 min) this is a delightfully creepy story that I read and couldn't get the imagery out of my head for months, so naturally I had to podfic it. The summary is "A ghost takes root in Wei Wuxian's body" and I won't spoil any more than that. I wanted a truly eerie effect for the ghost's voice and came up with a multilayer audio process with like 8 different steps to use for this that I've since used in multiple other podfics. Let's just say I don't recommend listening right before bedtime.

Gentle Exile by rynleaf (Untamed, Lan Xichen/Song Lan, 1 hr 38 mins) this was the story that got me into the LanLan ship. The story is so good and so...poetic almost, that it was a real challenge to figure out how to translate it into audio. This was my first time doing a multi-voice (Song Lan was voiced by the wonderful @semperfiona and now it's hard to think of him with any other voice), and editing a multi-voice is a LOT harder than I realized. It was also my first time really doing music or sound effects and I really jumped into the deep end for this one. I actually added a whole second chapter for a "making of" interview because I went for it to a truly absurd degree.

And on the fifth day, he found himself sneaking into the Sohma estate. It was all too easy with his skills to get to Kagura and Hatsumi's door without being seen and when it was answered, he didn't even hesitate.

"What's going on? Where's Isuzu?" What happened? It better not be what he thought it was.

Tapping on the glass, he waited to see if he had gotten Rin’s attention. It had been awhile since he climbed up the tree near her bedroom window. Usually he would just go through the house. But today Haru wasn’t that keen on seeing Kagura. Rather than possibly bumping into her, he had the bright idea of climbing the tree to see Rin. Just like he used to do when he was younger.

In The Wave in the Mind, one of Le Guin’s many collections of essays, she wrote, ‘All of us have to learn how to invent our lives, make them up, imagine them. We need to be taught these skills; we need guides to show us how. If we don’t, our lives get made up for us by other people.’ When I met Le Guin, I was in outer space, hovering in that darkness. Cast out from my homeworld, I spent my days orbiting a new world, afraid to land. She taught me a few things that I’ve never forgotten:

1. Not everyone who thinks they’re better than you actually is. 2. Speaking your mind is better than hiding your mind. 3. Trying to be an author is a very bad idea.

But writing? Even if it means that sometimes you write the wrong thing, or the uncool thing or (worst of all) the completely ignored thing – that’s a solid plan. And if, on occasion, you are called on to be an author, remember to turn your books face-out on the bookshelf.

     Drawing the bow slowly across the strings, Lelouch silently listened for anything out of tune. While Suzaku wasn’t home, he always felt the need to come to this park, located fairly close to their house. Nearing twilight, there weren’t very many people, leaving him standing by a solitary park bench to play for an imaginary audience...as he had not too long ago.

     Even then, he wasn’t ready to play for others, even people he knew. At least out here, it gave a different sense than being in his cage. He gave one last listen to the area around him--no voices, no sound of lingering footsteps, he should be fine.

     As the chill that the sunset brought in settled among the streets, he drew the bow across the strings again, slowly, readily, took a slow breath and started playing whatever he felt. Sheet music was no longer required--he’d had plenty of time for memorization growing up.

He’s very lucky that he manages to catch himself before he falls flat on his face; although it’s a very near thing, and he’s not quite fast enough to stop a rather startled squeak from slipping past his lips. Which he absolutely hopes she didn’t catch, but judging by the near smirk on her lips he knows he isn’t nearly that lucky, and he can feel a brief flicker of irritation rising up, although it’s rather muted by the time the words make their way from his lips.

And, she was close to Hiro… and Hiro and Kisa were exceptionally close. It was worth trying to connect with the tiger, right?“Earth still is my favourite planet,” she mused before stopping. She wanted to inwardly punch herself. DAMMIT she was starting to sound like Hatsuharu – he was rubbing off on her. Isuzu bore an expressionless look. What was she supposed to say now?

Kisa stared at her older cousin, her expression showing slight confusion at the remark.  If it was from one of her other cousins it would have just been a normal cousin, but from Rin it had caught her off guard.  The orange haired girl began to wonder if this was what Rin was really like and began to feel bad for not trying to form a friendship with her earlier.  After all, they both had mutual friends in Hiro and Haru so she had plenty of opportunities to try.  “Well...I like Earth too.  I guess it’s my favorite planet too.”
