Disclaimer: My first Pokemon game was actually S/M because growing up, I've never owned a gaming console. My first ever console was the 3DS that I bought with money from my first job LOL. And wasn't allowed to watch much TV either because, ahem, Strict Asian Parents™, but I do know enough about pokemon to answer this ask, thankfully.

OOOOoooo Gen 1 is hard to choose. I don't have a particular preference because I love them all 😭 but if I have to choose one?

Squirtle it is. And why, you ask? This dumb meme in particular.

That's all I'm going to say.

Now Gen 2 is easy. Cyndaquil, without question.

College's getting tricky, but I'm managing! Definitely affords less free time though...

Scenario: How it is to be your favorite

Characters: Kuki Shinobu, Others

Let's be frank, Kuki never expected to be something special. If Inazuma as a whole was favored by you, in her eyes she was simply a cog that had helped the process, nothing more, not even as you took her in trips way more than others...

After a while, she couldn't help but get a suspicion, even before you entered the world, but it felt wild to her, too wild to be true, especially considering who her competition was. She decided to play it safe and just think of it as a wishful dream...

She already had a lot on her plate from her day to day life even without your influence, so needing to adhere to your expectations on top of all of that couldn't help but stress her out, even if she did enjoy the trips out of Inazuma.

So when you come down to personality greet her with eyes that show clear fascination, she doesn't know what to feel. She feels so many emotions, both good and bad, at once! She may need a moment to take it in...

With the Arataki gang being as loud as they are, she has no chance of keeping this under wraps in the long term, and just imagining the reaction of the other influential people in Inazuma frankly scared her. This was the creator she was talking about!

She really didn't know what to expect when you began to ask for her presence whenever you caught sight of her, but she couldn't deny that she always ended up enjoying it, even past all the stuff that worried her before. She was right to assume that your presence was radiant.

Even if your trips together are more geared towards relaxation, she's grateful whenever you spend some time of your day with her. It might take her some time to get used to, but after doing it once, she can't help but want more...

She really doesn't need much to be happy, but whatever extra effort you put into it will be appreciated! It doesn't have to be anywhere near perfect to satisfy her, just make sure to spend time with her and all will be alright.

It's hard to tell how would the rest respond to you having a favorite. It would involve a lot of inner conflict though, that's for sure. For some more than others, but all of them to a certain degree, even before you appear in their world.

Of course, some are just happy to be there, and be acknowledged. Yoimiya, and Kirara, for example, are more than happy to accompany you, even if they may not be the stars in your eyes, and wouldn't do much to change things.

Others would similarly listen to your wishes, but have faint, fleeting wishes to be a little more special. Ayaka and Kokomi, for example, may have more selfish wishes, but wouldn't act according to them, especially not against your wishes.

But for the others? Things start to get more complicated. Characters like Ei, Miko, Sara and Chiori understand when they aren't the most beloved, and who is above them. And a such, their actions can be a bit less compliant.

Sara and Ei aren't as unrestrained, however, and they know how to compromise and plan without risks. They wouldn't challenge your love directly, but would be constantly thinking of plans to change it. Maybe showing off their potential, or giving you more attention...

If you arrive, they're definitely going to suffer some more inner conflict. You're right there, they could do something far greater to capture you, but they shouldn't disturb you like that, it wouldn't end up well. They can't help but think of more schemes however.

Miko and Chiori? Now that's definitely a bit trickier to handle. These two don't have anywhere near as much restraint, not with their actions, and neither with their words. They will make their attempts to make you appreciate them obvious and bold.

It only gets worse when you're physically there with them, as they have more opportunities to try and take your attention away. Presents, sweet words, companionship, they'll try many things without directly admitting their desire to become more favored.

24. “I’m a monster! Can’t you see it?!”

Your blood-stained long T-shirt, tears on your cheeks flushed with heat, a few strands of hair on the dirty floor, and the fear in your eyes seemed to the young Inspector an image that was downright terrifying, even nightmarish; however, not because of your appearance and the look of the room you both were in, but because of how scared and sad you were at that time. How much your eyes shone with self-loathing and how damned deep down you wanted to disappear and never be born.

“I’m a monster! Can’t you see it?!”

Of course he knew you were a ghoul. The walking grotesque, his enemy, the walking death, humanity’s greatest failure. A abominable monster.

He knew and watched you for months, studying your whole body and your behavior – he believed that he would eventually find a magical solution that would restore your humanity. He has kept you as a secret for a long time from the rest of his co-workers, from his command and from his own family. Although he knew every day that you could attack him, he bravely endured your outbursts of aggression and murderous desire, insatiable anger.

He was there when you vomited trying to eat a tomato and cheese sandwich, he was there when you cried into his shoulder, begging him to kill you, and he was there when you felt too human, wishing he would love you and stay with you for ever. He was in your worst and nastiest moments, but he was also next to you when you smiled slightly as you laid the last wild draw four card on the table and shouted a loud, almost carefree ‘Uno!’. He was always there and will always be.

It was hard for him to bear the sight of your hands in the dark liquid, your torn clothes and the traces of murder that were right under his feet. You killed an innocent woman who got a promotion in the family business two days ago. You killed a person who probably had a family who loved her, children who had to be kissed before bed, or even a dog who was eagerly waiting for her to put some of his favorite food in his bowl. You ate half of her firm, sweet flesh with tears in your eyes, and when Kuki caught you in the act, you nearly ripped out your own windpipe to relieve your own suffering. If there’s one thing you hated, it was definitely being a ghoul.

The silence between you two was interrupted only by your painful crying and the sound of cars driving down the street a few floors below. You looked alternately at the dead headless woman and at the man you loved, once again begging him to finally kill you. Of course, he didn’t do it that night, nor when you begged him to do the same three days later, clutching his shirt in a tight grip; behind you lay the lower limb of some five years old child.

It was hard for both of you to live with the thought that you loved a human and he loved a being he should have killed the first time he discovered your true colors. But he couldn’t do that. He just couldn’t.

You were both weak and pathetic.

Groaning inwardly, Aguri's eyes darted upwards, fixing on Regina. It didn't come as much of a surprise to see her here, seeing as she was using the kitchen of the old meeting place, which Regina and her father had since taken up as their residence on Earth. But she'd been under the impression that both Regina and her father would be out for the day.

Looked like she'd been wrong.

Mana had offered to let her use the kitchen at her parent's restaurant, but she had turned her down, not wanting to trouble anyone. Her own house was out- if the finished product turned out good, she wanted to surprise her grandmother with them, and she couldn't exactly do that if she was making them in their own kitchen.

"What does it look like I'm doing?" Aguri asked, knowing that her tone was a bit more curt than it should be. They were technically sisters, so maybe she should try to be a little bit nicer to her, but just because she had been told that, it wasn't like it turned their entire relationship on it's head.

It wasn't so long ago that Regina was still the enemy.

As far as she could see, her behavior hadn't changed much. She might be putting a little more effort into it than say, Ira, but given what a lackluster effort the former Selfish was making, that wasn't saying much.

"Making a mess, mostly." Regina remarked, arching a brow.

Sighing, Aguri pointed to the cupcake tray. "I'm baking."

¹Urū-shōgatsu jūichi-nichi ・ asa  [閏正月十一日・朝].

   The Gregorian date of this chakai was March 6, 1591.

²Terumoto dono ・ hitori  [輝元殿・一人].

    This was Mōri Terumoto [毛利輝元; 1553 ~ 1625], daimyō-nobleman (as gon-chūnaigon [権中納言], Supernumerary Middle Counselor) he held the Third Rank), and a member of Hideyoshi’s Council of the Five Great Elders [go-tairō [五大老]).  He was thus an extremely important person -- and, interestingly, he also is one of the most frequent of Rikyū’s guests mentioned in the Rikyū Hyakkai Ki.

     While Lord Terumoto at his meal alone (Rikyū actually indicates that he was “hitori” [一人], meaning that he was invited to the gathering alone, as the sole guest)*, in fact three other guests joined the chakai during the go-za.  Details of them will be found below (in footnotes 17 to 21). ___________ *This is evidence that Rikyū wrote his kaiki before the fact -- as a sort of planner.  And the use of a chū-natsume (rather than an ō-natsume as might have been better, with four guests to serve) suggests that the other three people were not originally expected; thus Rikyū had to make due with the utensils (and the amount of matcha) that had already been prepared.

    The mention of the other three guests, and the way he disposed of them in a different part of his mansion, was scribbled in at the end of the entry.  In other words, it seems that two of the guests (who were personal retainers of Lord Terumoto) unexpectedly accompanied Terumoto to Rikyū’s house, after which Rikyū may have sent word to the third (a chajin and personal friend) to join and help him with the food service, and perhaps to act as a sort of provisional hantō during the service of tea as well (since the presence of retainers would demand that Rikyu treat Lord Terumoto much more formally than it seems he did when Terumoto visited him unattended).

    Following the meal, all three of these people joined Lord Terumoto in the 4.5-mat room for tea.

    Apparently liking the effect of his maki-e ō-natsume the day before, Rikyū decided to try something similar, but using a smaller tea container, better suited to the service of a single guest*.

    Together with this natsume, Rikyū would have used an ori-tame [折撓] as the chashaku, one that he had made by himself.

 ��  And, though also not mentioned in his kaiki, Rikyū most likely used a take-wa [竹輪] as the futaoki, and a mentsū [面桶] as the mizu-koboshi.

___________ *It seems that the gathering had been originally planned for Mōri Terumoto alone.  Then three other guests came and asked to be allowed to participate.  Rikyū probably served Terumoto a personal bowl of koicha, and then offered a second bowl of koicha to the others (as sui-cha [吸い茶], meaning that a single bowl of koicha was shared by these three guests), followed by usucha.

⁸Shakuhachi ni baika ireru  [尺八に梅花入る].

    As before, this was the oki-hanaire [置き花入] named “Shakuhachi” [尺八] that Rikyū had made for the all-night flower-arranging competition that Hideyoshi had hosted during the siege of Odawara the previous summer.

    Placed on an usu-ita [薄板] on the floor of the tokonoma, the effect would have been similar to that of the previous day.

⁹Ato ni Hashi-date deru  [後に橋立出る].

    Hashi-date [橋立] was Rikyū’s best cha-tsubo.  It was taken to the island of Shikoku not long after his death, and vanished from the records (and so was presumed lost) during Sen no Sōtan’s lifetime (according to a document written by Sōtan that discusses the fates of Rikyū’s three cha-tsubo).

    In Rikyū’s period it was customary for the guests to have an interest in examining the cha-tsubo, since this also revealed the source of the tea that it contained.  (In this period, the tea jars were usually filled by tea merchants, who acquired the leaf tea from the growers, and then blended it in order to achieve a more consistent product from year to year.)

¹⁰Tai no yaki-mono  [鯛のやき物].

    Tai [鯛] (sea bream) grilled over charcoal.  It was basted with salted water while it cooked.

¹¹Koi no sashimi  [こいのさしみ].

    This refers to what is now known as koi arai [鯉洗い]:  the carp was cleaned and filleted, and the fillets were placed in a bath of hot water before they were transferred to cold water (to chill and firm the flesh).  After chilling, the fillets were carved into bite-sized pieces, as usual for sashimi.

¹²Imo-no-kuki ・ azuki irete [no] shiru  [いものくき・小豆入テ汁].

    This is a kind of miso-shiru, in which imo-no-kuki and cooked azuki beans are suspended.

    Imo-no-kuki [芋の莖, 芋の茎]* are the petioles of the taro plant.  These were eaten as a vegetable in early spring†, when the plants first begin to sprout.  Care must be taken to remove the stringy vascular bundles from the concave side of the petiole before cooking.  They are boiled lightly, but should still be fairly crisp when served.

    Azuki [小豆] are small, burgundy-colored beans.  They are best known to foreign practitioners of chanoyu as being one of the main ingredients in many types of wa-gashi [和菓子] (Japanese traditional sweets -- though the word is generally used to refer to kashi specifically made for chanoyu), but, in fact, they are also used as a vegetable, as here. ___________ *More commonly known as zuiki [ずいき = 芋茎] today.

†They could, of course, be eaten at any time.  But it was in the early spring, when fresh vegetables were still scarce, that imo-no-kuki were most commonly included in the diet.

    The petioles of the sweet potato plant (not the vines) can be eaten in the same way, and sometimes the name imo-no-kuki is used for these as well.

¹³Meshi  [めし].

    Steamed rice.

¹⁴Hakuchō no shiru  [白鳥ノ汁].

    This is a clear soup -- perhaps served more as a stew (in other words, with a larger proportion of meat and vegetables than when offered as a soup course) -- made by boiling the flesh and bones of a wild swan, together with pieces of daikon and seasonal vegetables.

     The swan would have been provided to Rikyū by Hideyoshi’s hawkers.

¹⁵Fu-no-yaki  [ふのやき].

    Rikyū’s signature wheaten crêpes, spread with sweet white miso (or possibly miso-an [味噌餡] -- which is the same white miso diluted with strained cooked white beans) before being rolled or folded into bite-sized pieces.

¹⁶Yaki-guri  [やき栗].

    Roasted chestnuts.

¹⁷Sase Yosozaemon [佐世與三左衞門].

    This refers to the bushō [武将] (military man) and daimyō Sase Motoyoshi [佐世元嘉; 1546 ~ 1620], who was a personal retainer of Mōri Terumoto.  Motoyoshi served as Governor of Iwami (Iwami-no-kami  [石見守]), and also Governor of Nagato (Nagato-no-kami  [長門守]), both in the far west of the main Japanese island of Honshū, with the latter position including responsibility for guarding the Kanmon Straits.

    Sase Motoyoshi and Hayashi Narinaga were both Mōri Terumoto’s personal attendants -- perhaps equivalent to his personal guard of honor.

¹⁸Hayashi Hizen-no-kami  [林肥前守].

    This is a reference to Hayashi Narinaga [林就長; 1517 ~ 1605], another personal retainer of Mōri Terumoto, who was a daimyō-nobleman* in his own right.

    The Hisada-bon [久田本] refers to this man as Hayashi Higo-no-kami [林肥後守], meaning he was the Governor of Higo, but this is clearly an error -- since a member of the Hayashi family did not serve as governor of that province until the late Edo period.  Possibly this suggests that portions of the Hisada-bon were modified later. ___________ *As Governor of Hizen (Hizen no kami [肥前守]), Hayashi Narinaga held the junior grade of the Fifth Rank.

¹⁹Shōan rō  [少安老].

    This probably refers to Mozu-ya Sōan [萬代屋宗安; ? ~ 1594]*, who appears to have been close to Rikyū’s own age (perhaps a year or two younger, as attested by the affectionate use of the kanji “shō” [少]) -- and who has been seen in the role of batsu-kyaku [末客] (last guest)/hantō [半東] (host’s assistant) at other chakai where the other guests were high government officials or noblemen.  Sōan’s name was also written as Shōan/Sōan [variously as 少安, 小安, 少庵, and 小庵], by his contemporaries†.

    I should mention that the Sadō Ko-ten Zen-shu‡ identifies this person (without further explanation, or justification) as [Miyaō] Sōjun [(宮王)宗淳; 1546 ~ 1614], the son of Miyaō Saburō Sannyū [宮王三郎三入; ? ~ 1582], who is usually known today as Sen no Shōan [千少 庵].  But this argument is extremely problematic, if only because (in addition to the fact that the second kanji for his name is different -- and this difference has nowhere been accounted for) the suffix rō [老] (which means “old man**”) would not have been appropriate for a man 45 years of age, who was younger than everybody else participating at this gathering with the exception of the shōkyaku (and even here the age-difference was not sufficient to elicit this sort of honorific, were “Shōan” actually a member of Terumoto’s party -- rather than someone whom Rikyū had called upon to help him in a pinch as I have suggested). ___________ *While Mozu-ya Sōan’s date of birth is not known with certainty, the indications are that he was the same age (or a year or two younger) than Rikyū himself.  While there was no fixed rule, the honorific suffix rō [老] was not generally used for people under 60 years of age.

†Which has played into the hands of scholars who want to assert a closer connection between Miyaō Sōjun, who was also known as Shōan [少庵] (though it seems, mostly in later accounts), and Rikyū.  In fact, it is difficult to associate Miyaō Saburō Sannyū’s son with most of these references (which is why they are rarely mentioned in public), while the more likely person is always Mozu-ya Sōan.

    Mozu-ya Sōan was one of Rikyū’s closest personal friends, and it would be to such a person that he would turn when he needed help serving important guests (as here), rather than the son of his second wife (whom he had married on Hideyoshi’s orders around 1585 or ’86, and to whose son he had barely been introduced -- a son who practiced a form of machi-shū chanoyu far removed from Rikyu’s own style).

‡Published by Tankōsha [淡交社], whose affiliated scholars can always be relied upon to promote Urasenke’s version of chanoyu and its history.

**The suffix ro [老] also includes the nuance that the person so designated was what we might call an “elder” -- that is, in the context of chanoyu, a publicly respected master (what Yamanoue Sōji called a chanoyu-sha [茶湯者], a man who made his living as a teacher of tea, and who was publicly acknowledged and respected as such).  Mozu-ya Sōan was, in fact, employed as one of Hideyoshi’s tea masters (and apparently part of his responsibility was to act as an instructor for Hideyoshi’s courtiers, and possibly his women); Sen no Shōan, on the other hand, does not seem to have cultivated much of a public persona -- and he (and his son Sōtan) seem to have curtailed all of their public activities, and literally went into hiding after Rikyū’s seppuku (a situation from which Sōtan only emerged in his later years, and only after much prodding by the Tokugawa bakufu).

    The 18-mat “Colored Shoin,” the main reception room in Rikyū’s Juraku-tei residence.

    The guests would have had to exit the building and cross the garden to reach the (detached) 4.5-mat yashiki.

    Two of the men may have been attendants of Mōri Terumoto, and were served their meal separately -- perhaps because their presence had not been anticipated by Rikyū.  Shōan, meanwhile, was a personal friend of Rikyū‘s, who likely participated in order to help Rikyū serve the others*. ___________ *As Rikyū could not be in two places at the same time, Shōan may have helped with the food service in the shoin, while Rikyū waited on Lord Terumoto in the 4.5-mat room.

    Nevertheless, the fact that Shōan also drank tea during the go-za together with the others suggests that he was not simply an assistant.

Rewrite of Touka/Kaneki wedding scene with Kaneki and Mutsuki get happily married instead of Touka and Kaneki

“Do you think there are too many flowers?” Urie Kuki asks, squinting at the venue.

“What blasphemy did I just hear? There are never too many flowers!” Tsukiyama Shuu gasps from behind a pillar of roses. 

“The cake is all set.” Yonebayashi Saiko skips in.

“Mutsuki’s gonna faint.” Nishiki Nishio laughs.

“Bets on who faints first.” Kirishima Ayato shouts. “I bet Kaneki!”

“Kaneki’s stronger than that now,” Touka informs her brother. She uses her ukaku to fly up to the top of the church to arrange a wreath of orchids.

“Put me down as Kaneki,” Aura Shinsanpei says sheepishly. Ayato nods with approval.

But as luck would have it, when Mutsuki appears down the aisle with Arima at his side, Kaneki’s knees do buckle. Ayato and Aura slap high-fives in the midst of the ceremony.

“This is so extravagant,” Mutsuki admits to Kaneki during their reception. “I had no idea you had such a lavish friend.”

“Neither did I for a while,” Kaneki admits. He reaches for Mutsuki’s hand. “Are you happy?”

“Very.” Mutsuki feels warm and secure and safe. 

“Good.” Kaneki kisses him.

“Give back my glasses!” 

Their attention immediately turns to the dance floor, where a very merry Yomo is prancing about with Nishiki’s spectacles. 

Mutsuki laughs. He already loves all of his husband’s wild, crazy friends.

The Final Antagonist of Tokyo Ghoul

Recently I've been thinking about the Antagonists in Tokyo Ghoul and so I want to make this post evaluating each of the Antagonists and who I think is most likely going to be the Final one above the rest.

Nimura Furuta:

Currently the Main Antagonist of Tokyo Ghoul, the foil to Ken Kaneki and the new dictator of the CCG. He's been there since Chapter 1, and for the longest the Tokyo Ghoul fandom has been trying to discover who this character really is and what he stands for.

Having progressed this far into the story, we now know his goal. Nimura Furuta (or whichever name you wish to refer to him by) is the Nihilist who seeks "Super Peace" which we now understand as the annihilation of ALL ghoul/human life. Furuta seeks peace through the means of death, and so, with all his power he's going to erase the lives of as many people as possible before his own life comes to an end.

Now that this has been well established, the fandom already sees Nimura Furuta as the Final Antagonist of the series. However, I don't want to jump to conclusions yet, because there are other characters who are equally mysterious and could potentially pose a huge threat. Let's look at the next characters.

Donato Porpora:

For a long time Donato has merely been the "Hannibal Lecter" of the series, trapped within a jail cell being able to offer nothing to the series but information, a disturbing appetite for flesh and his own charisma. Of course, this was all misleading, since Donato turned out to be leader of the Clowns this whole time, which already establishes him as a massive danger.

Like Furuta is the foil to Kaneki, Donato is also the foil to Koutarou Amon (Mah boi). If you ask me, these facts already place Donato on the same danger level as Furuta. The main difference is that Donato chooses not to take the spotlight, and so far he has only taken action against Kuki Urie for purely personal reasons.

On the surface he may not appear as a big enough threat, seeing as he was taken down by Mikito Urie and Iwao Kuroiwa in the past, but I wouldn't write off Donato just yet. We still don't know how much influence Donato has as the leader of the Clowns not to mention Donato is a masterful manipulator with perhaps even more knowledge on the human/ghoul mind than Furuta himself.

Uta:

Honestly, among all the Final Antagonist candidates I can think of, to me Uta is truly the wild card here. I'm not even sure if Uta qualifies as an Antagonist at all, that's just how confusing his character is to the fandom. Nobody can get a read on him, nobody knows where his allegiance lies, thus he completely fits his moniker "No Face" and not just because he can actually shape shift his own body to the finest detail.

Uta has made a remarkable impact on the fandom thanks to the incredibly contradictory and misleading actions that he has taken in the series. The only recent hint that we have recieved about Uta's motivations is that he involves himself in various events and observes people to escape his own loneliness. Yet with this information, we still don't know what will become of Uta.

Akihiro Kanou:

Everyone's favourite Mad Scientoast. Kanou is much more like Furuta in the sense that he's been relevant to the series from the very beginning, and seems to have a clear goal in his mind that none of us can truly determine yet.

What strikes me the most about Kanou is his distinction from the rest of the characters in the series. He stands out because he is depicted as a psychopath who never had a sense of empathy to begin with. All the other characters in Tokyo Ghoul are bound by their struggle of emotions like caged birds, where as Kanou is juxtaposed completely free from this flaw and is able to do as he pleases.

In my opinion, I believe Akihiro Kanou will most likely be the Final Antagonist. Why do I think this you ask? Well, I'll explain:

I think Kanou has more potential than the others because he's been the most successful in his endeavor's thus far. Kanou has only ever been interested in ghoul research and creating the most powerful human/ghoul hybrid imaginable. So far Kanou's efforts have been an overwhelming success, considering his prototype experiment ended up becoming the next One-Eyed King who was even capable of defeating Kishou Arima. Not to mention he was also successful in turning two ghoul Investigators into very powerful Owl's, and since then he's had more and more success.

My question is, what is Kanou's real goal? We're already aware that Kanou only lied about his vendetta against V so that he could obtain valuable allies, and since then he's been constantly shifting sides, fooling his allies by offering something in return so that he may continue his research. After all this time, Kanou has amounted a vast amount of knowledge regarding the means of creating powerful human/ghoul hybrids. To add onto all this, we just found out that Kanou now has access to the corpse of Noro. One can only wonder what Kanou will do once he has obtained all the knowledge he requires.

Would you do a study of the opening for S3? Hikariare is really good but do you think it surpasses the others?

Sen: Probably the longest study that I’ve ever done. It’s only 1:30 long but there is so much to talk about. I’ve put it under the cut if anyone actually bothers to read this.

‘Hikariare’ stands out as one of the most different openingsof the series. While the main aim of an opening is to prepare you for the showto start, the 5th opening also does an amazing job of delving intosymbolism that has been used within the series but never explicitly dealt withwithin the opening. This arguably has the most content to deal with in contrastto the other openings which were around for two or three episodes more than‘Hikariare’. Buckle up bois cause this music student is about to take you for awild ride.

Like SPYAIR’s ‘Imagination’, the opening begins slowly withsimple on the beat strumming in opposition to the syncopated rhythm of thefirst opening; this gives the 5th opening a grounded feeling as wellas building up suspense as soon as it starts. This already works with the ideathat openings are meant to hype up and audience. The next shot focuses onHinata, our main character but only shows the number on his shirt, working withhow in ‘Imagination’, there’s a shot where someone ties his shoes and thecamera moves to reveal Hinata, about to do something, also accentuated withsome sort of struggle as his back moves with each breath. This carries over tothe next shot where the lyrics “meippai ni kuki wo suikon da//I took a deepbreath” are sung as Hinata breathes in and out with his mouth open. Hinata’seyes are open wide in a beautiful shot with his wild hair flying everywhere andsweat droplets running down his face, indicating more of a struggle. Uponlooking into his eyes and the next frame, it is revealed that he was climbingup on some sort of mountain; Hinata seems to have come before them by only afraction of a second, showing that he is far from alone in this matter.

However, another mountain comes into view, another challengethat Karasuno must face. This mountain is sublime, daunting for thesecharacters; the perspective which makes the characters appear small shows howbig the challenge will be for them as well as showing the viewer how much isabout to happen. The mountain unfurls into a great large eagle, it’s wingsoutstretched, showing off pride and readiness to attack yet Karasuno’s positionhas not changed despite their image becoming smaller on the screen, symbolisingyet again the immense odds that this under dog team is up against. Finally,Ushijima appears on the screen with undefined features. His eyes however havethe same challenging gleam that appears throughout the rest of the show and avolleyball is placed firmly in his hand, showing that he is in full control andKarasuno has to take him down. His stance of course is not special despite howmenacing his broad shoulders and feet shoulder width apart seem to bethreatening; it is simply the way he usually stands when he is preparing forsomething.

Shiratorizawa’s team is first shown in an earlier shot inseason 2 where their faces are covered in darkness while Ushijima is the onlyone visible. Here, Ushijima’s stance is a little more relaxed with his arms byhis sides yet his back is straight with perfect posture. Goshiki stands withone foot forward and his hands on his hips, showing off his confident natureand Yamagata stands with clenched fists, presenting him to possibly be a roughcharacter. Shirabu and Kawanishi have relatively relaxed poses in comparison toTendou, who is relaxed with his arms folded behind his head, as if believingthe match will be over quickly and staying in line with his taunting nature.Reon however stands to Ushijima’s right side, going along with the theme thatReon is like Ushijima’s right hand man. Haikyuu’s stadiums are always brightlylit, presenting a burst of energy, yet a single spot light is focused down onthe net as the outlines of crows flutter past. This could actually be badforeshadowing of how Karasuno will take the spotlight from Shiratorizawa, or itcould show that it’s time for Karasuno to rise up and return to their formerglory.

All of a sudden, a flash of light shines across the screenwith the vocalist singing “hikariare// let there be light” as crows fly past.The camera in the next shot swoops past Hinata like a bird, hence how thecamera does not completely focus on him. His quick instincts tell him to turnaround with his fists clenched, ready for a fight; his eyes make eye contactwith the camera, and us in the process, showing a piercing determination. Thecrow flies and soars to the sky which is still dark before the next shot snapsto Hinata whose figure lowers, indicating him preparing for a receive.

The phrase “hikariare” is often used in this opening as abuild up for something. On the next shot, a spiker from Shiratorizawa (notUshijima based on the fact that he spiked with his right hand) snaps on thefinal syllable of “re” and at this point the music is not synced with what ishappening on the court. Usually, the camera would follow close to Hinata likein ‘FLY HIGH!!!’ where the intro starts with the camera lagging slightly behindas he runs; instead, this time the camera runs along the side then snaps to theopposite side of the court where the ball slams down and bounces over thecamera. The following shots are comprised of Nishinoya, Tsukishima and Daichisupporting the team in their usual roles but this also shows off that they’regoing to have a big role in this season. In addition to this, Tsukishima’sright hand snaps back when the ball hits him, foreshadowing his injury to comebut his eyes keep on the ball as it continues to sink down on the other side ofthe court, showing off his immense concentration.

Once again, we’re back with Ushijima again and his animationhas become a lot rougher. This style is emphasised by the white blur on theedges of the screen and rough shadows over his hand; this is seen when Oikawaand Ushijima serve as well, meant to show the immense impact that they candeliver. Light suddenly snaps like thunder upon the court when Ushijima smashesthrough their block and air shifts when the ball bounces, showing once againthe ultimate strength that he brings to his team.  

The ball bounces off into the darkness to be replaced by theimage of an eagle. The striking part about this image is the fact that it hasbeen coloured in black, only to be replaced with an even more determined shotof Ushijima’s golden eyes as little of his face is illuminated. Eyes play animportant part in Haikyuu’s openings as shown when Hinata first looks up at themountain in the beginning and in ‘FLY HIGH!!!’ where Hinata’s eyes reflect theball as he jumps to spike it. Though Hinata was once afraid of Ushijima, hiseyes appear on the screen as well, unblinking and almost relentless; this trulyshows off how much Hinata has developed as a person and also a player if he’sable to stand up to Ushijima in this way.

Crows once again fly past, potentially making the metaphoroverused, but it is soon followed up by the Karasuno team as they run up for amob attack. This section is potentially also the most monotonous as everysingle opening has had a scene where the same players show off their skills butin the same motions that they have been doing in openings from season 1. Thenext shot is far more effective with Hinata jumping up amazingly high to thepoint where he appears to be flying; upon this thought, the image of a birdappears. This bird could possibly just be Karasuno’s crow soaring in the lightthat is finally shining, or the fact that feathers fly off of it could onceagain foreshadow Shiratorizawa’s defeat and this could be an eagle.

Light flourishes in the gymnasium with shadows transforminginto crows before scattering away. This particularly does not have muchsymbolism but the next shot shows Hinata’s hair move, as if the crows reallydid fly past him. Now the setting is bright and clear like the court regularlywould be, indicating the fact that this imagery built up in Hinata’s head needsto be cast aside and that it’s time to focus upon the game. The typical shot ofthe main team’s numbers on their back is only momentary till it snaps back toHinata possibly nodding to the singer’s words of “your shine today willilluminate another’s tomorrow” as a response as well as showing hisdetermination to fight.

The camera returns to the common theme of showing thecharacter’s feet as they step forward onto the court. This is one of the firstscenes in Haikyuu where Hinata looks on coming back to Karasuno and they allshout “let’s have a good game” yet Hinata’s steps are not as bouncy as before,showing that he has become more mature and serious as the series hasprogressed. The characters walk forwards towards the net but at differentspeeds; it is clear that Ushijima and Hinata come close to the net first butit’s also shown that Yamagata walks slightly faster than the others and Tsukishimalags behind his team a bit as well. Crows and an eagle appear with a flash oflightning, signifying the start of the match effectively, with the eagle’stalons bared and beaks open in preparation.

The final shot however is once again daunting yet hopeful.The trophy looks big in the perspective that the camera shows us and there areclear details of possibly laurels over the underside of the cup. The finalglint of the cup matches up with the last words “hikariare” again to show offthe imagery of light. The final guitar pattern ends on an imperfect cadence,leaving you unsatisfied as you want a final chord to finish everything off.However, this satisfaction will not come from another note but in fact from theshow that you’ve been so eagerly prepared for. All these images culminate into one of the most effective anime openings from last year.
