when do you get your soft, italicized, "oh" ?
THE KISS you typically wait until the last second to believe the truth ― because it would destroy you to believe it, and then find out it was a lie. you are someone who has never wanted to want, but has rarely been able to do anything else. the idea that you might have to break down your walls for the sake of someone else, someone who could easily decide they don't like what is on the other side, is harrowing. why let people get close enough to be rejected ? you are enough for yourself. and you will tell yourself that every time you catch yourself staring at their mouth, smirking at their joke, finding a reason to flick their shoulder. until the kiss. that's when the flood of want, want, want bowls over you and you realize that you are torn between two ways of living. Oh, you think. because despite how complicated you have made it, the moment you kiss, somehow, things seem incredibly simple. they won't be once you start thinking again, but for now, for this moment, you live in the quiet peace of revelation. Oh.

The Contract - Chapter 2
*Warning Adult Content*
Three days went by, and it was finally the day I have a meeting with someone from Desire.
Phoning up was easy, and getting a face-to-face with someone inside was tricky but a few lies later I got an appointment but I'm anything if not persistent, I went all out on the receptionist and used every trick in the book to get someone to see me.
The shame I feel sitting here, in the waiting lobby is enough to put me in my grave, the looks alone from those in fancy suits double that feeling.
Why didn't I dress up?
If I had known every single woman and man inside this building was flashy, I probably would have borrowed some of Robbie's clothes.
The looks alone... I know that if any one of them were in my situation, they'd do the exact same thing as me.
The building is high grade, just like I expected, walling inside felt like walking inside of a catalog for rich snobs.
This place screamed 'I'm more important than you, so shut up or I'll sue you' and that was starting to get me anxious.
I don't fit in here, I'm not like these people, I didn't come from wealth.
I don't even have $5 to my name.
Was this a huge mistake?
Should I just let myself sink or should I swim into the unknown, those are the questions I can't get out of my head.
"Mr. Beckett."
A beautiful young woman in a pencil skirt and tight blouse comes up to me with a smile.
"Mr. Steele will see you now."
Wait, what did she say?
With the CEO?
That's a mistake.
I stand up and walk after her.
"Excuse me, I thought I had a meeting with someone called Jason?"
I follow her until she stops at the double doors a few feet away from the lobby.
"No sir, Mr. Steele will be taking this meeting, Jason is his PA."
The secretary, Stacey... knocks and then opens one side of the doors.
"Sir I have your 2oclock," she says sweetly.
I don't hear a reply but Stacey opens the door for me and smiles at me with pity once she sees the panic on my face, she gives me an encouraging nod for me to enter whilst she holds the door open for me.
Shit, no turning back now, here we go.
Entering his office, the first thing I notice is how big it actually is and intimidating, it was far too big for what was inside the room, I did a quick look before I focused on the man himself, stationed in the middle of the room.
Donovan Steele had not even looked up at me, he was sitting looking over papers without a single care in the world.
Stacey closes the doors behind her, making me jump.
"Take a seat," Mr. Steele says, his voice leaving no room for questions.
I feel like I'm about to be told off, even so, I do as he says and sit in the chairs in front of his desk.
He had yet to raise his head and look at me and I took that time to study him.
He didn't look like the guy everyone thought he was, sure the guy had a face only Lucifer could have, he was terrifyingly beautiful and he was taller than me and much larger and there was this air around him that made me feel nervous.
Despite this, he looked reasonable, maybe he'll understand my situation and show me some pity.
I swallow hard.
"Mr. Steele, you know why I'm here I assume?" I say tightly, making him put his fancy-looking pen down on his desk.
He raises his head and looks and me and my body completely freezes because damn if I don't admit that I'm fucking terrified right now.
The corner of his mouth twitches as he leans back and stares at me with his piercing cold eyes.
"You want my help," he spoke bluntly. "You're an actor, correct?"
The shame washes over me again as I nod my head.
A silence fills the room, his eyes never leave mine and mine never leave his, even though all I want to do is look away and cry.
Fuck, Evan, don't let this fucker scare you.
"You know who I am, yes?" he asks and I nod my head. "Then you know it's not just as simple as me giving you money, I want something in return."
Robbie was right, he wants something in return but what the hell can I give him?
I have nothing to give him.
"You don't have anything I can use, so why should I not have you thrown out of my office right this instant for wasting my time?"
My hands begin to sweat and my throat starts to dry up.
"Because," I nervously stutter. "I'm willing to do anything for it, I... I need this, the only option I have left."
His facial expression remains hard and expressionless, as he stares at me like a filthy street dog.
"I'm a hard worker."
Shit- do I need to beg?
Am I really going to sink this low?
"Name it and I'll do it. Please give me a chance, I won't disappoint you, I'll do whatever you ask Mr. Steele."
He sighs then pulls back his sleeve to check the time on his expensive-looking gold watch.
His eyes snap back to mine and hold me in place as he looks me over, from the top of my hair to the beat-up trainers I was wearing.
Then he goes back to my face.
"You have a good face, how old are you?" he asks, making me frown.
"Twenty two... Sir."
"You keep in shape?"
I swallow nervously.
"Uh..." I stutter, unsure where he's going with this. "Yeah, I go to the gym."
"Ever thought of erotic movies? You'd make quite the dollar as a male actor," he says, amused as his lips twist into a smirk.
This is humiliating, honestly... what did I expect?
"No." I say dryly, glaring at him. "I don't do that shit, I'm a serious actor."
I should just leave, he isn't going to make a deal with me anyways, this was a shot in the dark.
"A serious actor who hasn't worked in over a year," he states, tapping a piece of paper on his desk, his intimidating eyes never leaving mine.
"If you were serious, you'd take work where you could get it," he says.
"Beggars can't be choosers," he adds, looking down at me. I want to punch him in his perfect face, who does he think he is, humiliating me like this?
"If you want to be taken seriously, take off your jacket."
"What?" I ask, confused.
"Get undressed," he commands, leaving no room for me to speak. "I won't ask again, Evan."
I feel beyond humiliated, like a show pony but even so, I do as he says and swallow my pride, I stand up and take my jacket off and put it on the chair.
"Now the top."
I bite the inside of my cheek and do as he says and takes my pulling my top from over my head and drop it on the chair.
He looks me over as the room falls silent, his dark gray eyes look me over as his face never falters from one of pure intimidation and deep concentration.
"Okay," he says, sitting forward in his chair slightly. "I can work with this."
"I will give you the money you need and take you on as talent, you can work off your debt to me through the jobs you get."
Something tells me there is a but coming but he says nothing, so I swallow my pride once again and ask.
Wait.
"Is that all?" I ask dumbly before another thought comes to mind that makes me cringe.
"Wait, this isn't one of those where I'm having sex with you for this opportunity, right? If that is what this is then..."
His hard eyes meet mine and my blood goes cold.
"You're a smart boy Evan, so I'll cut past the bullshit."
"Since I'm in a good mood, you can leave right now and forget this conversation ever happened, you can accept this how it is and sign on with my company as a talent and I will also pay your remaining debts," he said.
"But."
"The moment you leave my office... you'll never know what it feels like to indulge in the curiosity you feel for me, the same curiosity you're so desperately trying to hide," he says, before staring at my growing erection.
I blush and turn my head, ashamed of how he could easily read me like that.
He stands up from his chair and comes around his desk to stand a foot in front of me, leaning against his desk, his hands gripping the edge of his desk as he looks directly into my eyes, making me feel hot and bothered.
How the hell did he know?
"So? Do you want to be my friend?" he says, his deep voice making my arm hairs stand up. "With benefits."
"But I'm not gay." I said, my face feeling hot with embarrassment.
Although I had kissed a man before, I had never done anything with a man that went past drunken kissing.
"You like me," he says with an amused look on his face. "Isn't that enough? I'm too impatient to drag this out, I want a physical relationship, no strings attached," he spoke bluntly. "How does that sound? Are you interested?"
The room grows silent as I think it over.
I'll just be his friend with benefits?
What does he mean by that?
I mean this isn't the first time I've slept with someone with no strings attached but could I do it with this man?
It can't be just that simple...
Just look at him, he could have anyone he wanted, so why me?
This is just too random to be real.
I could just leave, take his offer to help and be done, I'd never have to see him again.
I swallow hard.
"But I won't be just your friend, will I?"
A smirk forms on Donovan's lips as he looks at me and shakes his head.
"No," he said. "You won't."
Fuck... All I have to do is just be his friend and that's it?
I mean, he is pretty good-looking and I've always wanted to try it with a guy, I suppose it doesn't get better than a billionaire bachelor... right?
Fuck, I'm not gay... but I mean... if it's him, it should be fine, right?
What's the worst that can happen?
Plus he's signing me on as a talent, it isn't the worst offer, in fact, it's perfect.
Fuck it... I'm curious what it feels like, besides, I can leave this 'relationship' whenever I want.
"Okay," I breathe out. "I'll be your friend."

DRAGON POX HAS COME TO HOGWARTS ---
As of 10 am of the afternoon of Thursday, 2 April, Hogwarts has officially reported its first case of Dragon Pox in one hundred years. While the patient has been escorted to St. Mungo’s and treated with only the finest of care, the castle cannot ignore the threat of such a contagious disease. Hogwarts castle will be cleaned from tower to dungeon, from ceiling to floor, to eradicate any contagious germs that may have been left behind by the affected patient.
Unfortunately for students, that means that, in the meantime, they will be quarantined immediately. Everyone will be escorted by the staff into the nearest location in the castle that has seen no contact with the Dragon Pox patient in the past week. For the next 30 hours, students will have their food delivered to their quarantine site by the usual means, as well as accommodations for sleep when the time arrives.
If you believe yourself or one of your peers to be exhibiting any symptoms of Dragon Pox, contact a professor via the emergency only owl located in your quarantine location.
OOC Information ---
IC the quarantine lasts from approximately 10 am on Thursday, 2 April, to 4 pm on Friday, 3 April. OOC, you may make starters for this plot drop from now through Monday, 6 April, 11:59 pm PST.
If your character is missing, it is either because they are part-time, assumed to be off campus, or were simply overlooked. So if you would like one of those rules to be included, just shoot me a message, and we’ll find them a spot. Alternatively, if there is absolutely no way in freshly frozen purgatory that your character would be where they were placed, shoot me a message, and we’ll find a way to fix it.
Groups below the cut!
Group One: Hogwarts Library
The Restricted Section is, well, restricted still. Students have free reign of the library, but will be asked to sleep in the Muggle Studies section only.
Quarantined Students:
Alecto Carrow @c-alecto
Amycus Carrow @theworstcarrow
Asher Avery @asheravery
Daphne Davenport @daphnedavenport
Josslyn Janks @jankyjosslyn
Mary Macdonald @marymacdonaldhadafarm
Rodolphus Lestrange @doctorlestranges
Than Chadwick @thanthemans
Tiberius McLaggen @tiberiusmclaggen
Group Two: Kitchens
As the kitchens are responsible for feeding the rest of the castle during this delicate window of time, quarantined students have been given the back third of the kitchen to work with. Of course, they can still ask a House Elf for assistance should they be lacking in basic necessities.
Quarantined Students:
Andromeda Black @andromedaatnight
Bellatrix Lestrange @bellathicclestrange
Gilbert Selwyn @gilbert-selwyn
Iris Selwyn @irisselwyn
Jana McLaggen @janamclaggen
Marlene McKinnon @marlenethemenace
Regan Higgs-Weasley @reganweasley
Ted Tonks @tonkstedtalk
Group Three: Rouge Staircase
This particular staircase shut down as students were on their way elsewhere, leaving them stranded without the aid of other staircases around them. The staircase will move from time to time, although unhelpfully.
Quarantined Students:
Alice Shafiq @shafiqalice
Amathera Zabini @amatherazabini
Bastian Bott @bastianbott
Jennifer Burke @jenniferburke
Lily Evans @weewxtch
Mason Boot @masonboot
Molly Macmillan @mollymacmillan
Nola Fawley @nolafawley
Group Four: Hagrid’s Hut
This was deemed the safest location for students spread across the grounds at the time of quarantine. Tragically, Hagrid was inside the castle at the time of quarantine, leaving his hut locked (with an infantile Fang howling inside).
Quarantined Students:
Agatha Timms @aggietimms
Dorcas Meadowes @dorcasisntdeadyet
D.W. Widdow @deedoubleiddow
Fabian Prewett @fabiansacharmer
Gawain Robards @goldenrobards
Natalya Greengrass @natalyagreengrass
Percy Robards @percivalrobards
Vivian Travers @viviantraversing
Group Five: Arithmancy Corridor
While students were initially meant to have full access to the corridor at large, the remembrance that the affected patient had been there for a studying section earlier in the week caused them all to be shuffled into Professor Dearborn’s office.
Quarantined Students:
Caradoc Dearborn @dickdowndearborn
Cecily Beckett @cecilybeckett
Eyen Sosa @eyenscloset
Gideon Prewett @gideonprewonder
Pandora Lanchance @rohmantiq
Penny Tyler @pentyler
Rosalind Nott @rosalindnott
Sturgis Podmore @sturgispodmore
Wendy Lestrange @wendythestrange
Group Six: Owlery
Don’t worry, the birds don’t bite. At least not when they’re well fed. By people who are currently in quarantine elsewhere in the castle. Oh, dear...
Quarantined Students:
Amelia Bones @liabones
Bertha Jorkins @berthajorkinss
Bertie Higgs @bertiehiggz
Emma Vanity @youresovanity
Emmeline Vance @emmelionvance
Remus Lupin @x-remus
Sirius Black @messrsblacks
Tolkien Wilde @tolkienwildeboy
Group Seven: Hospital Wing
It was considered that these students might be better off moving to another location for quarantine, but as they’d already been exposed before the doors to the Hospital Wing were locked---well, it would just be irresponsible to let them leave, wouldn’t it?
Quarantined Students:
Cyrus Greengrass @greengrassisgreener
Davey Gudgeon @daveygudgeon
Edgar Bones @edgarboned
Frances Bletchley @francesbletchley
James Potter @jamespooper
Narcissa Black @narcissablack-x
Peter Pettigrew @pterpettigrew
Zoe Bell @rocketshipbell
Group Eight: Potions Corridor
Students in the potions corridor have access to that and only that: the corridor. All classrooms, offices, and storage closets have been locked.
Quaratined Students:
Adrian Vallancourt @adrianvallancourt
Barty Crouch Jr. @bartycrouchjunior
Benjy Fenwick @notbenjyfenwick
Bilius Weasley @biliusbby

More Foghorn: The Robert Eggers Q&A.
“I wanted to be able to laugh at misery.” —The Lighthouse director Robert Eggers answers your questions and ours about what he’s wearing on Hallowe’en, being cool with memes, and paying homage to Mary Poppins.
The Lighthouse, out now in select US cinemas and opening nationwide this weekend, is the follow-up to Robert Eggers’ feature debut The Witch, one of our highest-rated films of 2016 and the third highest-rated horror of that year.
Similarly, The Lighthouse is firmly in our top ten narrative features of 2019 and is absolutely tearing up the Letterboxd reviews section with reactions like “Eggers holds nothing back in this film. He takes things far past okay and doesn’t apologize for any of it,” (Logan) and “If a bearded, bulging-eyed Willem Dafoe talking like a pirate for one hundred and ten minutes, shot on high-contrast orthochromatically filtered high-resolution black-and-white celluloid that brings out every follicle and pore doesn’t deserve five stars, I simply don’t know what does” (Jonathan).
The film’s success lies in a combination of obsessively detailed production design, singular technical choices (“a black-and-white movie in a stupid aspect ratio”, as Eggers told Filmmaker magazine), the superb acting partnership of Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson as lighthouse keepers on a far-flung rock, a borderline-ridiculous amount of foghorn in the soundtrack, and—in spite of the characters’ miserable circumstances—a hysterically funny script.
When we spoke to Eggers’ brother and co-writer Max at TIFF, he told us that the writing partnership was “a perfect fit; we trust each other, and I think that’s the big thing about writing teams is you gotta trust each other. Their brotherly relationship naturally enabled the film’s dialogue to head into comedic territory, even as the story itself descends into hallucinatory horror. “Comedy is about that. You’ve gotta be able to be honest and trust yourselves. We didn’t know how it was going to play but, thankfully, I think the fart jokes work.”
Not only do the fart jokes work; the poetically trippy 1890s dialogue became instantly meme-able. It was no surprise, then, that when we invited the Letterboxd community to contribute questions for this interview, many of them dwelled on the script. But first, with Hallowe’en fast-approaching, we needed to know what Eggers had planned.
A24 has put out a helpful guide for those who want to do Hallowe’en as a 19th-century lighthouse keeper. You’re in the middle of The Lighthouse promo tour, but have you managed to plan yours? Robert Eggers: Hallowe’en was my favorite holiday growing up and I made many elaborate costumes, but now that I’m doing this, I will agree with Marilyn Manson where he says: “Hallowe’en is my day off”. It’s time for everyone else to catch up!
At TIFF, we spoke with your co-writer and brother Max about your collaboration. Letterboxd members Kevin and MrRabbit7 are interested in what the writing process was like with Max. Does that relationship allow more of an ‘anything goes’ approach? I know my brother, so it’s easy for us to write together. My movie that was leaked in the trades a couple days ago [The Northman] I also wrote with another writer. I’m finding, as much as I like writing scripts on my own, it’s fun to collaborate. It’s actually joyful to pass the drafts back and forth and see how you’re lifting each other’s work up.
We had many questions (including from John, Austin and Tyler) about The Lighthouse’s dialect and vernacular. Can you tell us about the work you did in constructing dialogue in unfamiliar languages, including the sources you consulted? It’s a lot of research and there is some quoting the sources directly. There’s much more of that in The Witch, where sentences remain intact. There’s very few intact sentences from the research in this film. There’s certainly many turns-of-phrase. When I’m looking at my primary source material from the period, I’m writing down vocabulary words in my own thesaurus that I can turn to.
I tend not to write in modern English and then translate the dialect. I try to write in the dialect even as I’m learning to do it, so the thesaurus is organized more [as] moods and ideas. I’m washing my eyes with words and hoping something turns up that works as I’m moving forward. You’re studying the sentence structure and trying to find the rules.
Thankfully with The Witch, because it was written in early modern English, which was a golden age of English writing, there were plenty of books available to teach me what the rules were. In studying the various Puritans, I could find how different people broke the rules and did things their own way. With this film it was much harder to find that, but eventually my brother came across the work of Sarah Orne Jewett. She was writing in coastal Maine dialect, interviewing working people to get their dialect. My wife found a thesis written by Evelyn Starr Cutler where she provided rules for different dialects—where are ‘r’s omitted and where are ‘r’s added, so on and so forth—so we could create consistent dialects for both characters.
“Why’d ya spill yer beans?” “Wouldst thou like to live deliciously?” Everyone—even A24’s marketing team—has taken to the film with meme-able gusto (exhibit A: these goofy Lighthouse emoji). How does it feel to have your deeply researched script torn apart in this affectionate, ironic way by internet culture? Does it make you hesitate in your approach to writing and directing these types of lines? (This question brought to you by those who quoted those infamous questions in response to this AMA.) No, it’s cool with me. The Lighthouse was designed to be a black comedy and not just have moments of black comedy. The Witch takes itself very seriously, but I think that there’s something kind of film student-y about how serious it takes itself. I’m glad that people can make PlayMobil and Lego playsets as jokes. You need to be irreverent, and with The Lighthouse I was exploring misery again but I wanted to be able to laugh at misery. Werner Herzog talked about it like, you’re on the floor laughing, you know?
You and your brother both have deep roots in theater. After listening to your A24 podcast with brother-in-arms and Midsommar director Ari Aster, Solly F wants to know which playwrights you look up to, and who was particularly useful in your approach to The Lighthouse? I like Shakespeare [laughs]. I don’t know if he was particularly helpful for this, but he’s pretty good! Clearly [Harold] Pinter, Sam Shepard, and evoking the name [Samuel] Beckett is almost worse than evoking the name Shakespeare, but you know, they’re good at what they do, and for this two-hander about identity it was impossible not to think of those playwrights.
Many members are curious about the films that inspire you and, more specifically, your most influential Ingmar Bergman films. So, which Bergman were you looking at for The Lighthouse? Also, Evan McKenzie dares to ask, “Given the chance, which Bergman film should you like to remake?” Well, I would not remake a Bergman movie because that’s just insanity! Even though I dared to talk about remaking Nosferatu—which also probably does not need to be done—so I guess, yes, I am insane. Fair enough question. Obviously Persona and any of his chamber dramas would be the ones I would be thinking about here.
There’s a shot where Willem is knitting and Rob is smoking in the foreground, which Jarin [Blaschke, The Witch and The Lighthouse’s director of photography] and I referred to fondly as our Hour of the Wolf shot. Of course we’re using a much wider lens than Bergman ever would have done and had a different approach to lighting than he did, so it doesn’t seem all that Bergman-esque in the end, even though it was our homage.
Youssef asks: which foreign-language films are your favorites, or provided you an entry point into the non-English language arthouse? The arthouse films that I saw in high school were ones that just happened to be in my local video store. Only one of them is foreign language, The City of Lost Children, but that, Eraserhead, and Brazil were three movies that I can think of that made me ask: “Oh you can do that? Wow!” Julie Taymor’s Titus also was another film from high school that made me realize that there was something other than—and not to speak disparagingly—Spielberg and Tim Burton and whatever was more easy to see in rural New Hampshire cinemas.

The Lighthouse has an ambiguity that has led to many of our members questioning its genre. Even Ari Aster wasn’t sure when he mentioned the film in his Q&A, and you’ve referred to it as a black comedy here. But we have to ask, for the sake of our community’s sanity: is The Lighthouse a horror movie? I don’t see it as a horror movie. But I’ve definitely spoken to people who get my intentions that think it is. So maybe? I don’t care what people call it.
It’ll probably make our top horror lists, if that’s okay. That’s fine.
Let’s not tease too many hypotheticals, since this question is based only on your two-feature output so far, but there is significant interest in whether you’ll branch out into other genres, specifically sci-fi, and other time periods, specifically the future. Well again, pointing to the leaked Viking movie, that ain’t a horror movie. And I’ve written other movies that aren’t horror movies. It’s just The Witch and everything that I’ve actually gotten made so far have been horror or horror adjacent. That’s just how it’s been—fine, happy about it.
Never say never because I am interested in sci-fi. I feel like generally when people are trying to ask big questions and challenge current philosophies, to look at things that are bigger than ourselves today, it’s always done with sci-fi. So for me, I’m enjoying doing that kind of stuff in the past just because that’s not how people often use historical movies today.
Writer-director Robert Eggers.
We love asking filmmakers this and Filbert wants to know: what are your go-to comfort films? The movies you’ve seen the most? Anything that could surprise us? The Big Lebowski I’ve watched a lot. We have a little bit of a nod to it in The Lighthouse when [Pattinson] throws their shit off the cliff and it hits him in the face. It’s pretty damn close to the ashes of Steve Buscemi. I think it’s not going to surprise anyone that I’ve seen The Shining a zillion times. I’ve seen Mary Poppins a lot, and we have a little nod to it with our weather-vane shot.
By the way, when I’m writing it I’m not thinking ‘this is the Big Lebowski scene’ or ‘this is the Mary Poppins scene’. I’m just kind of writing and you say, “well, I know where that came from.”
Finally, the 2010s are drawing to a close and many of us, including Max and John, would like to know: what are your essential films of the decade? I’d have to think about it more, but recently I thought Trey Edward Shults’ Waves is great, Hereditary is great, Parasite’s great… I’m sorry, I haven’t seen Parasite [laughs]. That’s a microaggression, I meant to say Burning is great. Anything by Ciro Guerra [director of Embrace of the Serpent and co-director of Birds of Passage] is great. Yeah, there’s a few.

{ Chris Evans ♔ 33 ♔ he/him } well, well, well if it isn’t Andrew Beckett running around peach hollow. legend has it, they come from blueberry boulevard and have lived here for five years. if you’re wondering what they’ve been up to, i hear they’re a doctor for a living. they have been known to be self involved yet balanced. a word of advice to them, always look over your shoulder. you never know who is watching.
Andrew was born and raised in New York City. Born to Lizzie and George Beckett. Two loving parents who were very much not ready for a child. His mother was only eighteen when having him, and his father twenty one. They made due as much as they could tried to give him a normal life living with his grandparents in Queens, New York.
At the age of five his parents finally saved up enough for a new place, his mom and dad were both steadily working and they moved the three of them, the happy family, to the city.
When he was seven years old his father lost his job, instead of working to get a new one he became depressed and started sleeping all day. His mother tried to hide as much as she could from Andrew, but he saw more than he should’ve.
TRIGGER WARNING DEPRESSION, ABUSE & DEATH
When he was eight years old his father stumbled home drunk and upset, still not found a job and they were having trouble paying the bills on time he started getting angrier than he had ever been, that was the first night he saw his father hit his mother. It only got worse from there, he would stumble home every night and take out his anger on Lizzie who was only trying her best to provide.
His father would sleep all day, and then drink all night not caring about what went on around him. His mother was the most caring person in the world, only trying to hide and protect Andrew from all of the bad in the world.
When he was ten years old he thought he would be the hero of the situation and Andrew stepped up to his father and got slapped down. That was the first night that his father ever hit him.
This went on until he was eighteen years old
When he was eighteen his father tripped and fell down the stairs of his apartment walk up and died from impact.
Andrew never shed a tear for his father. He only carried around hate and disrespect for the man, and he was happy to have him out of his life.
END OF TRIGGER WARNING
Through all of this pain he was always a good kid, and he always wanted to take care of the ones around him. Constantly patching up his mom, and if he ever had a friend he would always be the one asking if they needed anything or sharing with them to make sure that they were happy.
He was bullied through middle school and high school. He never wore the good clothes, his shoes always had holes in them, he was never given the easy life. He was also a dork, he didn’t play many sports, didn’t really talk to anyone much. Kept to himself and his books.
He grew up a lot in college, knowing what he was studying he didn’t have to think twice about it he was going to study to be a doctor so he could help everyone around him and not think twice about it.
When he was in college he met a girl, she was studying to be a nurse and the two of them would hang out together. He quickly fell head over heels for her. They ended up graduating college together, moving in together, and taking the only steps towards a perfect life.
When he was 28 his girlfriend ended up having a baby, a perfect little girl. He would give the world for the girl
The mother ended up skipping town after five months, without nothing but a note that said “I can’t do this anymore.”
Heartbroken, Andy ended up getting offered the job in Peaches and decided that they needed a fresh start
Since being in town he’s been nothing but nice to everyone. He loves his job, and he’s so thankful for the community that he’s built around him and he couldn’t imagine his life without this town.

Enemies to Lab Partners to Make Out Session Associates
This is a commissioned piece for @eat-moar-veggis for their sanders sides OC ask blog: @ask-villegas-sides .
Summary: When Flint, the science teacher and also Beckett’s dad, paired up Beckett with Reese on a group project to help them ‘grow closer’, he never could have anticipated how close the boys would actually grow. Also featuring guidance counselor Lev.
Commission info available here! Commissions are open! :)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Dad, please, don’t pair me up with Reese.” Beckett begged, staying after class with his father, Flint, the high school Chemistry teacher. “He’s insufferable.”
“You seem to be under the impression that everyone is insufferable.” Flint mused.
“Well, it’s true!” Beckett said exasperatedly. “But he’s extra insufferable. No, he’s just extra, period.”
“Is that a slang term?” Flint asked, stacking a few student’s papers on his desk so it appeared more orderly.
“Yes, dad, it’s slang, and in this case it means bad.” Beckett groaned. “Reese is the epitome of everything wrong with the world. He likes crowds, and people, and things.”
“You like ‘things’, as you put it so delicately.” Flint was clearly fighting the urge to roll his eyes.
“Yeah, but not theatre things.” Beckett stuck out his tongue. “Or jock things. He’s probably gonna end up shoving the whole project onto my plate, and if that happens I’m not doing it so I need a new partner.”
Flint paused, putting a hand to his chin as if he was considering the proposition. “I always wondered what it would feel like to fail my own son.”
Beckett immediately paled at his words. “Dad, you’re…you’re not serious, right?”
“I’m always serious.” Flint assured him, gesturing to his necktie as further evidence to his serious nature. “Beckett, it’s a group assignment, not the end of the world.”
“Sounds the same to me.” Beckett muttered.
“Beckett, I will not be having any more disruptions in my class.” Flint said, his voice turning stern as he glared down over the bridge of his nose. “You and Reese have been solely responsible for three interruptions in my class in the past week. I will stand for it no longer. Pairing you two up is my last warning for you two to get. Along. If I don’t see the two of you growing close over this assignment, I will be forced to report your behavior to the school board and fail you both for this project.”
“Dad!” Beckett’s jaw dropped, shocked at how harsh his dad could be.
“My word is final, Beckett.” Flint gave a nod to the door. “I trust you heard my declaration as well, Reese?”
Beckett turned to see the theatre athlete standing in the door frame, looking as though he was about to knock. Reese lowered his hand, looking sheepish. “…clearly, Mr. Flint.”
“Good.” Flint seemed pleased with this resolution. “Then I trust you two will spend the rest of your study hall getting started instead of moaning to me about how unjust my decisions are. The library should be an ideal place to set up.”
“The library should be an ideal place to set up.” Reese mocked, only for his eyes to widen in horror as he realized he said that out loud. “I mean, uh, meet you there!”
“No running in the halls!” The counselor’s called from the hall, the sounds of frantic footfalls slowing only slightly on the tiled floors.
“Guess I better go after him.” Beckett muttered, shoving his hands into his hoodie pockets and trudging down the hall.
It wasn’t fair. His dad shouldn’t be able to force Beckett to behave with Reese as if he could just shove them into one of those two-person ‘get along’ shirts. This was totally embarrassing! Beckett didn’t even care about the stupid grade in the first place, having planned on bailing the second he figured out his partner, but now he had to actually make- ugh, an effort- so that he didn’t end up on the gallows in front of the entire school board.
“You’re late.” Reese commented the moment Beckett arrived, setting the teen’s teeth on edge.
“Well, you cheated.” Beckett growled. “And you’re a prick.”
“Ah, I see you’re just as pleasant outside of daddy’s class as you are inside.” Reese rolled his eyes with a smile. He held out his palm. “Give me your phone.”
“What the hell? No.” Beckett frowned, considering this to be the world’s worst mugging attempt.
“I’m not stealing it.” Reese rolled his eyes again. He seemed to do that a lot. “I’m just going to put in my phone number.”
“Why can’t I have your phone, then?” Beckett raised an eyebrow.
“Uh, and get your weird witchy cult vibes all over it?” Reese looked like he was pretending to gag. “No thanks.”
“You shouldn’t insult me if you want something.” Beckett argued.
“You walked in here and immediately called me a prick.” Reese deadpanned.
“Well, you said I was late.”
“’Cause you were.”
“Maybe you were just stupidly early.”
The two were quiet for a moment, irritated energy practically seething off of them both.
“A truce, then.” Reese decreed, pulling out a pen and paper. He wrote down his number, sliding it across the table to Beckett who typed it into his phone. Reese’s own phone dinged a moment later, and he pulled it out to check the message.
B: Hey stupid.
Reese rolled his eyes, not even bothering to reply as he tucked the phone back into his pocket. “I don’t just hand out my phone number to everyone, so treat this as a privilege. Don’t abuse it.”
Beckett raised an eyebrow, a silent challenge. “You got it.”
A moment later Reese’s phone dinged again, so he pulled it out.
B: Made ya look. ;p
“Oh, real mature.” Reese huffed, putting his phone back and not deigning Beckett with a response. Beckett seemed content to keep staring down at his phone, a series of chimes coming from Reese’s pocket again. “Beckett, I swear on Evan Hansen himself I will block your number.”
Okay, yeah, maybe Beckett was being a little immature. But watching the steam metaphorically blow out of Reese’s ears when he saw the stream of penguin emojis he kept endlessly sending made it all worth it. Who knows? Maybe messing with Reese wasn’t his dad’s intended goal of this pairing, but it was certainly a nice side effect. Eventually, Beckett stopped sending penguins long enough to agree on a time to meet up after class, the bell indicating their study period was over.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
B: You’re late.
Beckett tapped his foot impatiently, trying not to let his anxiety overwhelm him while he waited. This was where they always met, having started meeting up regularly a month ago. He had already checked, double-checked, and triple-checked their meeting spot twenty times on his phone in the last ten minutes. There it was, plain as day: Reese had said to meet at the library at 4:00 today. Now it was 4:20 (holla), and Beckett was considering ghosting Reese for the rest of existence.
But no, that wouldn’t work. With his luck Becket messed up which library they were supposed to meet at and Reese was going to be mad at him and then Beckett’s dad would think he wasn’t trying to make this work and they’d both fail and Reese would hate him forever-
…wait. Why did he care what Reese thought of him?
Beckett scrambled for his phone, hearing an almost silent ‘ding!’ in the foreboding silence of the library.
R: So sorry, practice is running late. Be there in five?
Practice? Practice for what? Beckett couldn’t even begin to guess. It seemed that Reese had a habit of signing himself up for quite literally everything the school offered. Beckett could never keep track of all that, and he never wanted to either; who needed all that unwanted pressure? High school was bad enough, thank you.
Beckett bounced his leg, nervously watching the clock count with agonizing slowness. It felt weird, just sitting here alone in the library where anybody could be staring at him. He knew the others were judging him. Beckett could feel their stares on the back of his neck, and took solitude in trying to distract himself with his phone. The battery was dying.
4:29. No sign of the jock in sight. Should he text again? Was that rude?
Beckett shook his head. This was ridiculous, he wasn’t the rude one. Reese had practically ditched him after making this plan in the first place.
B: You’re still late.
Even knowing he was in the right, Beckett held his breath as those three little dots appeared, indicating the thespian was typing.
R: Sorry!! This might take a while. Mind meeting me at the football field?
Yes, Beckett did mind; he minded very much. The football field was where kids like Beckett got beat up- not that Beckett went there often enough for that to happen, but cliché teenage Rom Coms never lie. Still, Beckett had nothing better to do, and he needed Reese to pull his weight in this project. It was with no small amount of grumbling that Beckett reminded himself that Reese was a… surprisingly competent partner. For a jock, anyway.
B: Be there in five.
Unlike Reese, Beckett actually meant it. His anxiety wouldn’t allow him to be tardy for fear of disappointing someone, even if that someone was a theatre kid with his gigantic head stuck in a football helmet.
He wasn’t going because he wanted to, in fact frankly Beckett would rather be just about anywhere else. Of all the activities he refused to participate in, sports was at the top. He couldn’t imagine exhausting himself, all eyes on him as he put his body through strenuous situations of his own free will. It was suicide. Not to mention, people got so invested in sports games; how did the players deal with all that pressure? If you missed the ball, you were letting the entire school down. And, even if you won (highly unlikely, given their football record the past few years), the opposing team would still hate you for making them lose. No matter what, you ended up sweaty and boo-ed. Yeah, no thanks.
But, as he turned the corner, Beckett’s eyes widened at all the muscled high school boys, realizing they were divided into shirts and skins. His heart rate increased, and he wasn’t sure if it was a good or bad thing that Reese was part of the half that was shirtless because on the one hand oh my god he’s so hot I’m too gay for this- and on the other hand how dare he look that hot I’m supposed to be mad at him.
…so maybe not all aspects of sports were inherently evil.
“Hey, Beckett!” Reese gave him a wave, jogging over to meet him with a smile on his face. Beckett’s own face flushed, and he burrowed further into his oversized hoodie. How did Reese manage to look so comfortable in his own skin when he was only wearing half his clothes?! Totally unfair. “I’m so sorry about all this, coach just wants us to run a few more plays before we’re done for the evening. But I figured it’d be best if you were here, so we can get started as soon as we’re done. Do you want to watch?”
I would like that very much. Beckett gave an awkward cough, shoving that thought into the far recesses of his mind. “Uh, yeah, I could do that, I guess.”
Reese gave a nod of acknowledgement, jogging back to his team as they did…a sports thing. Beckett couldn’t really comprehend what was going on, but the men seemed to be running back and forth a few times across the field.
Beckett looked up at the bleachers, deciding to take a seat while he waited. A few friends of the football players were up here as well, including a scattering of girlfriends. Beckett let them keep the front few rows and instead climbed his way to the very top where he could avoid having a social interaction ever.
The autumn wind was chillier up here, and Beckett pulled his jacket tighter around his chest. How was Reese not freezing out there? Granted, he was running around and sweating up a storm, but he was still shirtless. Why was the coach being so cruel? Would Reese catch a cold? That would be awful, especially since Beckett didn’t know how to cook soup to make him feel better- THE PROJECT! It would be awful because Reese wouldn’t be able to help him with the project. That was most certainly the only reason.
It was times like these Beckett truly loathed his dad for trying to force him to get along with the annoying hot popular guy. The world was already in love with Reese, so what did it care what Beckett thought? Beckett was nothing. He was the discarded gum that got stuck to the bottom of people like Reese’s shoes, only to be scraped off at their earliest convenience. People in high school shouldn’t be put up on a pedestal, and Beckett used to have no qualms about putting Reese in his place because Beckett was so low on the food chain he had nothing to lose.
Now, Beckett felt like he was on the brink of losing everything he had never gained in the first place.
“BECKETT!” The emo jumped, startled out of his depressing thoughts when he heard his name being called. He glanced down, seeing Reese at the bottom of the bleachers, a towel wrapped around his shoulders. The idiot was still shirtless. “PRACTICE IS OVER!”
Did that mean Beckett should come down? He assumed so. Carefully he descended the stairs, feeling uncomfortable at the sensation of being watched. Reese was definitely watching, and a few other bystanders turned to give him curious glances as well. Beckett must be the first cryptid to ever show up to football practice.
“Put on a shirt.” Beckett muttered, not looking Reese in the eye when he finally got to the bottom of the stairs.
Reese blinked, seeming surprised by this statement as he glanced down at his bare chest. When he looked up, the smirk on Reese’s face made Beckett want the earth to swallow him whole. “Why? Like what you see? Is my herculean frame too distracting for your mortal presence?”
“You’re gonna catch a cold.” Beckett huffed, which only seemed to make things worse as Reese let out a sort of squeal.
“Aww, I knew you care.” Reese cooed, and now Beckett wanted to die on the spot.
“Yeah, because a dead lab partner doesn’t do me any good.” Beckett said defensively, his shoulders hiking up to his ears. “But a partner that ditches isn’t any better.”
Reese paused, the smile on his face quickly falling. “I- you’re right, I’m sorry-“
“Whatever.” Beckett cut him off. “Just get your clothes on and let’s go.”
Reese nodded, quickly pulling on his shirt and letterman jacket, red in an obnoxious way that made his eyes pop. He fell in step beside Beckett, the two walking in a tense silence as they headed back towards the building.
“I really am sorry.” Reese spoke up softly. “I wasn’t thinking, I forgot about practice, but I thought it’d be fast enough that you wouldn’t notice. I should have texted you earlier.”
“Yeah, I get it, you’re too busy.” Beckett shrugged, trying to act like it wasn’t a big deal.
“No, that’s no excuse.” Reese said firmly. “Your time is just as important as mine, and I wasted it. I need to make it up to you. Do you like coffee? I can take you out sometime.”
“What, like a date?” Beckett teased, trying to keep his tone light and not as hopeful as his traitorous heart would believe. “If you wanted to get into my pants you could’ve just said so.”
Now that was the wrong thing to say to your growing crush. Even worse was the way Reese froze up, his face turning brighter than a cherry tomato.
“No, that’s not-!” Reese stammered, looking offended, and Beckett’s heart plummeted at the thought of being rejected even in a joke. “I would never be so crass, or forward, especially without- I mean, your intentions are important too, I wouldn’t just force myself on you like that, I was trying to be a gentleman about it-“
“Wait, what?” Now it was Beckett’s turn to blush tomato red. “Are you- you’re serious? About the pants stuff?”
“NO!” Reese’s shriek of indignation was so high-pitched Beckett could have mistaken it for a girl. “Certainly not off the bat. But- the ah, the date? I mean, maybe? Oh Lin Manuel Miranda, I never even asked if you’re into guys-“
“I am.” Beckett interrupted, a bit too suddenly for his own good. “Into you, too.” Was this a joke? Was Beckett being pranked? He didn’t exactly love the idea of a bunch of popular guys deciding to gang up and craft a plot to break his heart. Still, even as his anxiety tried to suggest such a nefarious scheme, Beckett couldn’t picture Reese being part of it, especially as the thespian had been reduced to a blushing, stammering mess at Beckett’s feet.
“Maybe…” Beckett swallowed, hoping he was making the right decision here. Good lord Romance was not his department. “Ugh, this is just… let’s start with coffee, okay?”
Reese visibly relaxed, as though a huge weight had been taken off his shoulders. “Coffee it is.”
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So, they had started with coffee dates.
And then coffee dates turned into regular dates.
And then came the hand holding, the soft kisses, and then… more.
Beckett wasn’t actually sure if Reese was his boyfriend, but there certainly should be a shorter title than Lab Partner who Occasionally Disappears Into the Back Room With Me For Super Hot Make Out Sessions.
Unfortunately, the privacy of the back room came with the unspoken caveat that while Beckett had access, it was truly his father’s prep room, and it was only a matter of time before they were caught.
“You know, while I did express that I wanted you two to grow closer as individuals, this is a bit closer than I anticipated.” Flint deadpanned, flicking on the light.
“Dad!” Beckett frantically shoved away from Reese, trying in vain to disguise the fact that moments ago his hands were wandering beneath the jock’s shirt while Reese ran his fingers through Beckett’s hair. (Beckett was pleased to note Reese’s chest felt as good as he imagined ever since that football practice).
“Professor Flint!” Reese said hastily, his face ashen as he looked like a frightened doe. Goodness gracious did Beckett just want to kiss that adorable look off his face. It was a pity his gay thoughts would not assist the situation at hand.
“Reese. Beckett.” Flint’s tone was eerily calm, the kind of scary dad tone that indicated he was about two seconds from blowing up. The teacher took in a long, tense breath, seeming to be calculating something in his mind. “I think you should both count yourselves grateful that I have discovered you on school property, and thus have an obligation to follow the necessary procedures.”
Uh oh. Beckett was tense, stepping forward to follow his father as he gave a wave of his hand. Reese moved to follow too, Flint pushing the high schoolers apart so that they stood on either side of him and had a few feet of separation.
“Where are we going?” Reese asked timidly, more nervous than Beckett usually heard him.
“The guidance counselor.” Flint’s tone was clipped now, clearly more annoyed at Reese considering he was the one discovered making out with Flint’s son. “You both have behaved wildly inappropriately.”
Reese and Beckett exchanged a glance, both thinking the same thing: We’re screwed.
Flint raised his knuckles, raping on the hardwood door. There was a pleasant “Come in!” spoken from inside, and Flint’s posture seemed to relax somewhat as he opened the door.
“Good afternoon, Lev.” Flint smiled, and Beckett found it strange to see his father acting so laid back in his greeting. Beckett didn’t know his dad even knew the counselor. Did they talk behind his back?
“Oh, heya Flint!” Lev, the guidance counselor, greeted him in turn. “Nice to see you too, Beckett. And who’s this young man?”
“This is Reese.” Beckett jerked his thumb towards the guy he makes out with sometimes.
“How do you know Beckett?” Reese blurted.
“Oh, he comes in here all the time.” Lev explained with a wave of his hand. “I love having him as company.”
Beckett shuffled his feet. “Lev helps with my anxiety.”
“Be that as it may, I think it will be more beneficial to get to the matter at hand.” Flint remained standing, watching the boys sit like two properly scolded school children. The analogy was quite accurate. “I have just apprehended these two boys engaging in… suggestive acts within my lab prep room.” Lev stifled a giggle, causing Flint to frown. “What’s so funny?”
“Sorry Flinty, I know this is serious.” Lev put on his serious face, making Flint’s lip twitch up. “Now boys, care to explain your side of the story?”
“No.” Beckett answered honestly, shrinking in on himself as he tucked his knees up to his chest.
Reese sent him a glare, which clearly was meant to say ‘Don’t you dare abandon me now, you traitor.’
“Ah…that would be an accurate description.” Reese conceded. “Beckett and I thought the privacy was, um, ideal, for… kissing.”
“Just kissing?” Lev clarified, immediately making everyone else in the room twice as uncomfortable.
“Yes, just- just kissing.” Reese looked ready to spontaneously combust. “With some touching, but clothed, and-“
“I do believe we have an accurate image of the event.” Flint raised his voice, cutting Reese off before the image could get more engrained into the poor father’s head.
“Yes, agreed.” Lev nodded. “Boys, I think you’re both smart enough to know that acts of PDA are not allowed on school grounds, especially to that extreme. Save it for when you get home.”
“Or not at all.” Flint couldn’t help but tack on. Beckett rolled his eyes, but this seemed to be a very poor choice as Flint gave him the dad glare. “Do you disagree, young man?”
“…no sir.” Beckett winced, his eyes soon staring down at his lap.
“With all due respect, I do disagree.” Reese spoke up, and Beckett’s eyes snapped to him instead. The jock had puffed out his chest, clearly acting with a confidence he didn’t fully possess. “I think I have a right to physically show my appreciation for my wonderful boyfriend, in moderation.”
Boyfriend. He said boyfriend. Beckett couldn’t help but grin like an idiot. His now-boyfriend was such an idiot, and Beckett loved him so much. Hopefully he wasn’t about to die by his father’s wrath.
The room was unbelievably tense, Reese and Flint caught in a staring match. Flint was cold and unyielding, while Reese was firm but polite. Jeez, what had Beckett ever done to deserve such a gentleman to stand up for him like that? Even if it was about something as trivial as steamy make out sessions, Beckett couldn’t help but feel his heart swell.
“They’re just kids, Flint.” Lev spoke up softly, going over to put a hand on Flint’s arm. Flint broke away from the staring match, looking into Lev’s eyes with an unreadable expression.
Lev turned back to the boys, giving them a small smile. “Now, since this is your first offence, only a verbal warning is required, so don’t let the two of us catch you making out in any more closets.”
“Yes sir.” Both boys spoke in unison, the tips of their ears turning red in embarrassment.
“Reese, I do believe the two of us will need to have a chat, off school grounds, about the nature of your relationship with my son.” Flint spoke up, in full dad mode.
Reese gulped, giving a stiff nod as now he was properly shamed. “Understood, sir.”
“Well, sounds like everything is working itself out!” Lev clapped his hands happily. “You boys are excused, have fun you too.”
“We will!” Reese assured him, flinching at Flint’s gaze. “Ah, an appropriate amount.”
Beckett hurried out the door after him, nearly missing the way Lev was asking Flint to grab coffee with him. Wait, was that a coffee date? Beckett definitely needed more details about that later. In the meantime, though, Beckett had a super hot idiot to thank for defending his honor.
Beckett fell into step beside Reese, slipping his fingers between his boyfriend’s and leaning close to whisper in the thespian’s ear. “Want to get off school property?”
“Sweet mother of pearl, yes.” Reese said breathlessly, the two racing each other to the door.

updates on sound work:
sound clips used mainly from “duck amuck” , sack of woe (live) by cannonball adderley, ltd by dexter gordon, various cartoon sound effects (flinstones feet scrambling sound etc), hot sonate by erwin schulhoff, looney tunes opening theme song.
Duck Amuck (text taken from Jane Batkin’s article)
One of the most important and, arguably, cultural films to emerge from Looney Tunes is Duck Amuck (Jones, 1953). It has been viewed as both ‘a parable of modern man’s powerless alienation from his environment and a hilarious “Merrie Melodie”’ (Schneider, 1994, p. 112). It remains Warner Bros.’ most critically acclaimed animation, with Louis Black calling it “a clinical study of deconstruction of a text” (Pilling, 1997, p. 210) and Alex Evans comparing it to the work of Samuel Beckett (2007, p. 378).
Daffy was created to be the antithesis of the rabbit; he is a “social misfit” claims Sandler (1998, p. 171). Jones’ duck is an outsider, “struggling to enter the mainstream” yet resisting it, (Schneider, 1994, p. 158). If we return briefly to Adorno and Horkheimer’s theory of the free spirit of man being in jeopardy within culture, we can see how Daffy, too, is quite literally subject to forces beyond his control. In Duck Amuck, Daffy is aware and yet not, his control is a fabrication, he is tormented by an off screen presence and his all American freedom is compromised as the cel collapses in upon him, restraining him. Looney Tunes speak directly to the audience about freedom and its jeopardy; they become siphons of culture.
Within Duck Amuck, Daffy adheres to the rules of the art form, living and breathing within the cel. It soon becomes apparent however that the cel is untrustworthy, leading Daffy to ask the audience “alright, where am I?” (Jones, 1953).
Alex Evans claims that Duck Amuck is seminal through its exploration of the body, and its transfiguration. He suggests that presence and absence make the cartoon comparable with Waiting for Godot. Will the tormentor be revealed? How does absolute absence inform the work? Evans suggests that absence “represents a considerable departure from the history of animation/live action interactions” (Evans, 2007, p. 380). Previously, animated characters and real actors shared screen time in the work of Warner Bros. and Disney, as well as Trick films such as J. Stuart Blackton’s early cinema, in which the artist is clearly present, drawing the drawing. When Bugs is revealed at the climax of Duck Amuck as the artist, this is anything but reassuring, says Evans; the “responsible” figure is a toon (ibid).
The breaking of the fourth wall is significant in Duck Amuck; the traditional method of the audience eavesdropping on characters who function within the three walls of their environment, the fourth wall being the transparent one, is commonly broken in the Looney Tunes filmography. Auter and Davis conducted research that points to a heightened sense of audience enjoyment when the fourth wall is broken (1991, pp. 165171). The inspiration for this can be seen as originating in Vaudeville. Klein interviewed a man who remembered the vaudeville acts and how accessible they were to the audience and Klein notes the importance of Vaudeville to cinema, with both appearing on the same bill at many theatres. He cites Jones’s One Froggy Evening (1957) as a clear example of this and Jones agrees that his frog was “a little vaudevillian” (Klein, 1993, p. 21).
Auter and Davis suggest that viewers feel an increased interest and become involved in the action; they move from passive to active participants as Looney Tunes characters draw them in and whisper asides to them, usually at the expense of the other protagonists (1991, pp.165171). Bugs does this repeatedly, at Daffy’s or Elmer’s expense. In Hare Remover (Tashlin, 1946), he remarks to the audience “what do ya know! This stuff works!”, whilst in Rabbit Punch (Jones, 1948) he escapes the boxing ring after 110 rounds with a formidable opponent, and apologises for the film breaking to the audience, before holding up a pair of scissors and quipping “confidentially, that film didn’t exactly break.” In essence, the reimagining of the fourth wall in Looney Tunes cartoons creates a connection and simultaneously a deconstruction of the text.
Pilling observes that the entrance of the creator into the film (in the case of Duck Amuck, Bugs as artist into Daffy’s world), creates an incarnation or “incartoonation” and that this transforms the world of the cartoon, introducing a “magical ontological concreteness” that gives the character a reality (Pilling, 1997, p. 212). Animation becomes limitless within Duck Amuck in particular, through the cartoon’s ability to dissect itself and allow characters to step into and out of the frame. Bugs lives beyond the confines of the cartoon and its scenery, whilst Daffy is tortured within it. Selfawareness is revolutionary here, the medium of animation becomes transformative whilst still retaining its essential anarchic core.

Sheppard returned to Cheyenne Mountain after his visit to Hawaii around six in the evening. He thought about taking a nap after a quick shower, deciding to go for dinner a bit later. When he finally settled on the bed, he found that he was not sleepy at all. Even though the long journeys to Arlington and then Hawaii had left him feeling physically exhausted, his mind was still stubbornly active. So he decided to spend some time on his required reading. He had a ton to catch up on after all.
……….
‘So, Colonel Carter was right. They had only known about the Wraith for about ten months.’
John reflected as he read that particular mission about Sumner's entanglement with the alien menace. He had a comprehensive summary Dr. Jackson had put together from all the data they had gathered from the Outpost and other sources, open on his PDA, to compare notes with Sumner's report.
Aftermath of Battle with Anubis
Few weeks after the initial discovery of the Outpost - Antarctica
The Marine teams had been conducting thorough searches in and around areas of the Antarctica Defense Outpost when they had come across the much smaller and somewhat older facility. It had been buried under the ice. But a wayward explosion that caught the area had caused half of it to become visible from the ground.
The unfortunate team of four Marines who had gone inside to search and secure the building had never made it back. The two hibernating Wraith Drones had woken up the moment they had entered the facility and fed on them before they could even utter a call for help. Colonel Sumner had been in the Outpost at the time co-coordinating the teams for security for exploration, science projects and helping to activate some of the Ancient equipment when he had felt the change overcoming him in response to the attack.
(He had written the mission report with unusually vivid details. John guessed that this was probably because they needed all the information in order to educate everyone on this newly discovered threat.)
It had taken several hours of brutal fighting between the two Wraith Drones and eight more Marines with Sumner on the lead until they had managed to neutralize the threats. There had been three more fatalities and everyone else had acquired varying injuries before it was over.
After securing the area of the attack and the facility, a team of scientists had gone in and downloaded whatever information they could from the old lab. And then they had leveled the facility to the ground, not wanting to take further chances.
This millennia-old information cache had been the SGC's discovery of the ‘Species of Wraith.’ The meticulous Ancient experimentation logs had shown how the pet project of the few overzealous Alteran scientists had gone terribly wrong and out of hand.
Summary of Reports from old Ancient lab & Terra Atlantus
The Origin of the Wraith
Over 10,200 years ago
They had started innocently enough by looking into the quite interesting species they had stumbled across during their visit to an unnamed planetoid at the edge of the galaxy. They had brought back a sample because the leading biologist of the group had thought the little black & red carapaced creatures that drained life from other living beings for sustenance was the best thing ever. The studies had progressed to the revelations of the longevity these creatures enjoyed due to their unique sustenance and that had been the point things had started to go downhill.
They had thoroughly mapped the genome of the creatures and had tried to duplicate the life-extending characteristics into a serum that they could inject their people with. When those trials failed they had gone to the extreme measure of feeding one of their own to an Iratus bug to manipulate a direct transition. Somewhere at this point the rest of the Ancients had caught a clue and shut the whole thing down. But somewhere down the line some of the bugs had escaped and it was speculated that this was what led to the beginning of the new species called "The Wraith."
Further information SGC had later uncovered while interacting with Terra Atlantus corroborated the records from the destroyed lab. This had produced further information and evidence of how the Iratus bugs had begun to feed on the Ancients on earth and other humanoid species on some of the other planets. This new feeding habit had started a mutation incorporating Ancient/Iratus DNA in the bugs, giving birth to the new Wraith species that grew to more humanoid proportions within mere decades.
The Ancients or the Alterans had not seen the ramifications or recognized these accelerated mutations for the threat they could become. Over the years they had grown in numbers and it had come to a point where the two species were locked in a war for survival; a war that had spread through the earth and few other planets in the Milky Way galaxy.
In a desperate attempt, a group of Ancient scientists had produced a retrovirus that could supposedly suppress the Wraith characteristics of the species and return them to humans. This had been released into the atmospheres of all the planets that were connected through the Stargates and even some that were not.
The results were not as advertised.
Instead of conversions, the Wraiths had all died in droves leaving the Ancients with a bittersweet victory. The peaceful societies the Ancients enjoyed had begun to fracture during this time due to the never-ending war that had been going for years and the somewhat abrupt end of it due to mass genocide.
About 10,000 years ago, a few more years after the supposed eradication of the “Wraith”, the majority of the Ancients had decided to leave the galaxy. From the best SGC could tell by the various accounts they found, the Alterans had lost the will to live in a world where their actions had almost led to the extinction of their species and the extinction of the Wraith that they had given birth to in the first place. Facing the evidence of their failure every day had become too much for them.
The mass exodus of the Gate Builder race known as the ‘Ancients’ had begun; they had been more focused on attaining inner peace and atonement by this point, towards something called 'Ascension' where one left behind the physical body to live in incorporeal form roaming the universe, according to the data from Terra Atlantus. They had not left any records as to where they had gone, taking their great city with them.
Another group of the fractured Ancients had been playing with a concept that not all the Wraiths had died as believed and that some of them might have gone into long-term hibernation scattered around the worlds. They had further contemplated the possibility of Wraith surviving and adapting to the virus slowly throughout the years only to become even a bigger threat in the future.
Unsurprisingly, this group had not become very popular among many with their Gloom & Doom predictions. So they had implemented their solution to the possible problem. They had manipulated their own genome with the ATA capability to act as a deterrent to the presence of anything related to Wraith. This was done in the hopes that if the Wraith were ever rediscovered as they feared, they would not hesitate to take swift action to annihilate the Wraith; thereby preventing another all-out war for survival. This same group had been instrumental in making sure that a part of Atlantis stayed behind in Terra Atlantus in order to help future generations if things were to become dire.
Information about this little revelation had been even more obscure than the Wraith. But the SGC now had an idea about what happened to the Marine Colonel. The 'ATA gene online experience' was a primal and visceral urge that was buried deep in the ATA genome that drove the gene carrier to utterly destroy anything and everything related to Wraith. While the gene carrier could activate Ancient Technology according to the strength of impression of their gene, this side effect came to the fore at the contact of anything related to Wraith; usually during combat. The purpose of it was to give the gene carrier an advantage over the Wraith, boosting physical strength, all senses, and perceptions enabling him/her to act swiftly.
According to Dr. Carson Beckett's reports, who discovered its existence, the ATA gene was always on, instructing various cells in the body to produce a series of proteins and enzymes that interacted with the skin, the nervous system, and the brain, allowing gene carriers to operate 'Ancient Technology' by thought alone. And when the online experience occurred, it interacted with the parts of the human brain sort of activating an extreme survival mode.
The ATA gene was introduced into the human population through interbreeding with the Ancients who stayed behind, resulting in a small percentage of humans from modern-day earth inheriting the gene. However, since nearly 10,000 years had gone by since the massive exodus of the Ancients to parts unknown, the gene had become exceedingly rare among humans, and rarer still for those who possessed it to have much proficiency in its general use.
……….
John felt a headache coming in, as his poor mind tried its best to wrap itself around the millennia-old origin story of the Wraith and the Ancients who had their careless hands deep in it. He shivered at the thought of being locked in a war of survival for decades. And now the same things were popping up around them and he understood the importance of the war that they were going to have to wage against the Wraith, as Sumner mentioned.
Then he turned his concentration to the revised report on Wraith biology. Although he had contributed to most of it and was still carrying a cache of info in his brain, he had to catch up with everything SGC had documented.
……….
SGC called the Hybrids, ‘Bug Experiments.’ John recalled the horror he killed back in Afghanistan and wondered what they had blended to produce something like it. Cameron Mitchell had his experience just a month back when he raided a suspected Wraith compound in Canada, of all places.
They had discovered a lab abandoned in haste and managed to capture one Hybrid bug that they had later tried to transport to Russia for study. (That had been the mission Hart and Co. had been involved in, that later went sideways). The other Hybrid had been killed by the Air Force Colonel. The operation had been a joint one with Canadian Security Intelligence Service and the ambitious leader of the native team had been adamant in capturing a specimen alive.
The Colonel had not taken kindly to that plan. An unconscious SIS team leader with a broken nose and a concussion, and one involuntarily sedated SG-1 team leader later, their 2ICs had managed to secure the facility with one live specimen, which they had sent away before either leader was brought back to consciousness.
……….
"Now, I would have paid to just watch that raid." John chuckled to himself.
Then he sobered up immediately when he thought about being in Mitchell's shoes in that situation. No. John was quite sure that it would have ended quite differently if that were the case. He remembered exactly how he felt and what he was capable of during the period he was "Online." No, he would not have tolerated anything that stood in his way and his objective, and things would have ended very badly indeed.
He made a mental note to discuss this with O'Neill, Sumner, and Mitchell. Interference with the destruction of anything Wraith-related had to be stopped, especially since this thing they all went through was going to be a recurring experience. They needed more solid procedures and protocols in the field on this subject to avoid friendly fire incidents. Whatever studies the scientists wanted to conduct would have to happen on dead Wraiths; not live ones.
……….
The next category they had was the Wraith Drones. They were as the name suggested, not quite sentient, but with basic animal drives and a taste for sucking the life out of humans. The Ancient data revealed that these sub-species were created by Wraith themselves to use as soldiers, bodyguards, slaves, and other assorted activities. Marshall Sumner, and soon after the General himself, had had their ‘Online experience’ while engaging these Drones.
Although SGC had documented information about basic make-up, biology, and sketches of what they looked like, none of them ever had even seen a male or a female fully-fledged Wraith before. It was theorized that another reason the Wraith preferred to use the Drones, instead of themselves, was that they were actually rare and they were protective of their species that could procreate.
This explained the rapt attention and the awe-filled fascination that was directed towards him during his debrief, John realized. He wondered how he had managed to kill two Wraiths relatively quickly when compared to the other field reports. The Wraiths and their Drones were highly advanced predators in their own right with long lives and enhanced physical and mental strengths. Moreover, a recent feeding would highly enhance their normal performances, acting as a drug that would last a couple of hours.
‘Maybe they were starving by the time I got to them,’ John thought to himself. But he remembered the way they moved and how the female was just playing with him at the beginning; so probably not starving, he amended to himself.
‘Or maybe because they were already messing with the minds of others - it could be that it makes them tired.'
Whatever it was, John decided not to dwell on the implications of that just yet. He had enough to worry about already.
John only skimmed over the next bit of the report, because it mostly had what they discussed when John had met with the doctors two days ago.
……….
He was saved from further headache-inducing studying by a knock on the door. Glancing at his watch, John noticed it was just past eight pm.
"Come. We are going out for dinner. You are buying." Captain Laura Cadman of the Marines informed him with a confident smirk on her face when he opened the door. He could also see Major Lorne, Captain Vega, and Dr. Miko Kusanagi behind her, wearing smiles and expectant looks directed at him.
"How nice of you to remember." John countered with a matching smirk. Taking a few seconds to grab his wallet and a jacket, he joined the group to go in search of food.
O’Malley’s Bar & Grill
Colorado
“So Sheppard, usually the ‘Flight Pool’ is run by Sergeant Markham, funnily enough. Anything and everything flight-related, your sims, mock battles, and evals and whatnot, he’s the man to go and say, place your, ahem… ‘Predictions.’ And if you have certain feelings about anything PT related, you go to Teal’c. He is very, I mean very serious about it. And Vala Mal Doran is definitely your girl if you come across any juicy bit of gossip or see somebody hooking up…”
An eyebrow wiggle and a wicked grin, as she paused to gulp down the rest of her beer.
“Then we have all things related to the Gate - now, for that, we have Harriman and Miko here in a joint effort. Because you see, it could be related to either one of ours or a geek…”
Marine Captain Laura Cadman was patiently breaking down the SGC Betting Pool's Organizational hierarchy to John, using the same serious tone she used when she conducted ‘Demolitions 101’ classes.
“Really Cadman? Is this the first thing you want to start telling the new guy? How the betting pool works?” The other Marine Captain, Alicia Vega decided to interrupt; adopting a mock superior tone. She was holding a glass of wine by the stem delicately, a picture of a dame at a palace function.
“Hey! Of course, it is. It is the most sacred tradition of all! This is the beginning where the ‘wet behind the ear newbie cautiously dips the shiny tip of his…” Miko snorted a laugh and almost choked on her water. Her glasses went askew as she erupted coughing and laughing at the same time. Vega thumped her on the back, in a decidedly un-lady-like manner. Lorne gave up and banged his forehead resoundingly on the table. John could see his shoulders vibrating with a silent laugh.
John was doing quite a good job maintaining composure - still pretending to listen attentively as if he was learning field surgery.
“Ha then, what would you tell him?” Cadman challenged Vega.
Vega turned her head towards Sheppard in a queenly manner. Then flashed all her teeth at him in a lecherous grin.
“Tell me, Sheppard, are you seeing anyone? If not, who do you prefer? Tell me specifics, there’s already a long list of people with varying levels of interests…” A loud chorus of groans - including John even as he was laughing - put a stop to whatever was about to come out her mouth.
Despite Cadman’s earlier threat, John hadn’t had to buy the whole group dinner. He had bought the first round of drinks and they had all chipped in for their dinner. They had then ordered another round of drinks and it would be the last as well because they all had to report for duty the next day. Well, everybody except John. He had to see Heightmeyer, the psychologist, in the morning and she would decide if John was fit for active duty or not.
“Hey, did you guys hear about that dignitary visit?” This was from Miko; the diminutive Japanese scientist wrinkled her nose as if she was inquiring about something nasty.
“It’s the annual visit doc. Although come to think of it, they are visiting a little early this time around. Scuttlebutt is that even the president is planning to pop by,” Lorne reflected thoughtfully.
“It’s a bunch of top brass from other military branches plus some diplomats from a few other countries. Oh and every one of the IOA. They visit every year. They usually walk around some of the labs, gawk at the Gate, eat the canapés and go back home to write reports or something. The General hates it. The officers have to put on dress uniforms if you are on duty.” He explained to Sheppard.
“When is it?” John asked.
“Thursday, next week. They get there around nine in the morning and only leave a couple of hours after lunch.” Lorne informed.
“I have a ‘Road Trip’ so I won’t be there for the circus,” Lorne used the term they used to refer to the Gate missions while they were in public. And he sounded positively happy at traipsing in another world doing trade negotiations than kowtowing with the dignitaries.
“Ah crap, I have some flight sims scheduled at Peterson that day. But I think I might be back before the visit ends. Do I still have to dress up?” John was hoping that he didn’t.
“You might.” Evan Lorne grinned, not very sympathetic to his colleague’s plight.
“Argh, I hate you people. You just have to dress up, flash a pretty smile and scatter. And Lorne, you lucky asshole, it was Kent’s team that was supposed to go on that trip in the first place. I have to follow them around the whole day, fucking escort duty. No talking, No smiling, No shooting, No blowing shit. Ahh, what a shitty way to spend the whole day following a bunch of ass-hats around!” Cadman moaned.
Vega shared the rest of her drink with Cadman; she had performed the same duty the year before; she knew it was decidedly an annoying task.
Cadman gulped it all down in one go and stared at Lorne sourly. Lorne gave her a grin. Cadman flipped him off. John shook his head and chuckled while Miko grabbed her purse, getting ready to leave.
They all left soon after settling the bills. They all piled up in the SUV they had signed out and John took the wheel. The whole ride was full of complaints about the visit, Miko’s hypothetical plans about sending the Mountain into a lockdown to cancel the whole thing, Cadman’s attempts at re-negotiating Lorne’s Gate mission, and all sorts of other insanities. By the time they returned to the Mountain and parted ways after back-patting and shouted good nights, John realized he was truly relaxed and happy. His mind had calmed down, releasing the tension he’d been carrying around. It dawned on him then; that had been the plan all along. The teams rarely went out during the week when they were mostly duty around the clock. This had been the first time John had been invited out for dinner; an unofficial integration ceremony of a sort and to make sure he was okay, especially after the visits he just came back from. John smiled to himself. He did have good people around him after all.
Stargate Command, Cheyenne Mountain - Colorado
Thursday: Annual visit of the Dignitaries
The week since John had gone out for dinner with his friends had been hectic. He had visited Dr. Heightmeyer, the psychologist, as scheduled the next day. She had served in the Army and had done three tours before completing her doctorate to become a psychologist. Her husband still served in the Navy. John had been apprehensive about the whole thing but had been surprised to find how easy it was to talk to her. She understood the job and didn’t waste time with unnecessary, soothing psychobabble. She had asked direct questions and John had answered honestly. They had talked about his visits to the cemeteries as well and she had frankly told him that she believed he was ready for active duty. She had instructed him to see her again in a month for a follow-up, or even before that if he felt the need. And that had been that.
So John had been busy with mandatory physical training sessions with the Marines and other lectures that were supposed to bring him up to speed on the SGC mandate. He had just begun to learn about another menace roaming the galaxy conquering worlds known as “The Goa’uld.” John hadn’t been able to hide his grimace, looking at the nasty and slimy snake-like things that burrowed into people’s heads and wrapped around their spines. He felt like an extra in the movie ‘Aliens.’ He still had to go for two more one-on-one sessions with Dr. Haroldson and Dr. Jackson who would be back in the Mountain next week. And there was still a bundle of After Action Reports on Goa’uld related missions to read through. John was not looking forward to any of that.
‘Now, Imagine what would happen if a Wraith met a Googadoodle and said ‘Hey buddy, let’s double up and screw this little world together.’ John’s mind was busily stirring disastrous scenarios while cackling evilly. He felt a shiver running through his spine at the very thought and almost fell on his face as his foot got tangled in the leg of his BDU pants he was in the process of shedding.
“Damn it, John, stop brewing up imaginary trouble. You’ve got plenty of crap to deal with for real already,” he berated himself.
Then he finally managed to put on his dress blues and the shoes. He had to hunt for his hat around the quarters and found it on the floor in the closet. He shook it off before placing it on his head, firmly hiding the cowlick that valiantly tried to push the offending item right off. After a stern tug on both sides, John convinced the hat to stay where he put it.
He checked himself in the mirror, making sure everything was neatly in place before leaving the safety of his quarters to brave the gathered sea of the top brass in every known military branch in the States. And of course the gaggle of visiting VIPs from the IOA as well.
..........
The Goa'uld called Nerus grabbed another canapé from a plate at the refreshments corner and inspected it thoroughly. He was bored. These 'people' he was supposed to mingle with, had absolutely nothing to contribute to an intelligent conversation. They were all right here, in the place that housed one of the greatest scientific creations in the galaxy, the technological marvel still, despite being a few million years old, the Stargate. Oh, the beauty of the complexity of the science behind it, the infinite possibilities that stemmed around it, waiting to be exploited, to be developed, so many scintillating theories that could be discussed...
But no!
He had to listen to these fat, accented assholes talking about the unlimited budget that had been pouring into this project and the scheming ways to bring more profit out of their investment. Then he had to pretend to sympathize with the old goat from the army or the navy, snidely commenting on how he'd have done a much better job than this insane maverick who was currently in Command of the SGC.
Nerus had gained access to this tour and reception posing as the PA of Shen Xiaoyi, the Chinese representative of the IOA, who happened to have had some dealings with the human he was occupying. She hadn't been any better. The woman had talked nothing about anything of importance either. What an utter waste of his time! He thought he felt his precious brain cells die, every time he participated in these progressively stupefying 'chit-chats.'
Well, not his brain cells, per se, they belonged to that human Wo Fat. But he wasn't there anymore to make any claims. Only Nerus was here now and everything that once belonged to Wo Fat was now very much his. Not to mention all the fuck-ups he had made along the way - now Nerus had to fix them as well. Hah. Well. No matter. He was a genius with millennia of experience to draw from after all. Fixing the mistakes of that insignificant human barely required anything out of his vast intelligence.
Now, what was up with the story of this pesky pilot Sheppard? Nerus hadn't seen him anywhere yet. Definitely not in the infirmary which was included in the tour. He had made a few discrete inquiries; never directly inquiring or mentioning any names, but everybody seemed to be firmly silent on the subject. Even talking to the fidgety scientist who supposedly just returned from Antarctica, hadn't revealed anything of value. The man had given him a suspicious look and Nerus had had to do some fast smooth-talking to pacify the man. Maybe this whole thing really was a waste of time. Maybe they didn't want to talk about the pilot because he was already dead. Humans got all weird and uncomfortable when they had to talk about their dead, didn't they?
...........
Nerus almost choked on the canapé he had just popped into his mouth when the subject of his musing chose that moment to walk into the reception area he was unsuccessfully mingling in. Nerus was coughing self-consciously into a closed fist when a glass full of clear liquid appeared in front of his face.
"Hi, I thought you could use a drink. I'm Stephanie, by the way." The smiling blond told the Goa'uld when he focused on her face.
"Thank you." He said politely, taking the offered water and gulping it down to clear his throat.
"I know the feeling. Got quite a shock myself. Looks rather handsome in his dress blues, doesn't he? I wasn't sure if it was him at first, but when Henry cornered him and took him away for a private pow wow, I figured that must be the guy."
Nerus carefully blanked the face he was wearing and gave the talkative woman an attentive stare. As luck would have it, he finally had someone willing to spill something on the subject of the mysterious pilot; the pilot who looked quite hearty and hale for somebody who was supposed to be dead. And the woman had it right. What with all the colorful military paraphernalia decorating half his chest on the sharp uniform with complementing shining boots, the man did look handsome indeed.
Noticing that she had the attention of her one-man audience, she moved closer to Nerus and lowered her voice conspiratorially.
"And to imagine this whole place and that secret base in Antarctica went completely haywire over this guy? Can you believe it? Henry almost had it blown to hell. But the geeks managed to sort it all out in time. Or so we were told."
She rolled her eyes at the incredulity of the story she just related. Nerus was thinking fast. This woman obviously had information. And he distinctly remembered her being introduced as an aide to someone in the White House. Since she was referring to the president of the United States by his first name, maybe she was the aide of someone in the inner circle. He needed to ask her more pointed questions; so to speak. And this was not the time or the place. He had to move her someplace else for that. Now how to go about doing that?
"Stephanie, my dear, I agree. As handsome as he is, blowing up a base for him does sound rather outrageous, doesn't it?" He said to her charmingly with what he figured was a witty smile. "Besides, why are we talking about someone we barely even know? I'd much rather talk about you. To be honest, you are the only person with whom I feel like I can have a lively conversation. Among all these dreadfully boring people, you are like a breath of fresh air."
Nerus briefly wondered if he had maybe layered it up too thick. But then he was rewarded with a chorus of giggles from her as she threw her head back and laughed. Then she extended her hand to him and he took it in his. He led her out with a smile that promised wicked things in the near future. Unfortunately for Stephanie, it was not going to be the type of wickedness she enjoyed.
..........
John had figured that he would enter the reception area where the visitors had gathered for refreshments, sidle close to Mitchell or maybe even Colonel Sumner, smile at some brass, and then make a discreet exit. But that plan got shot to hell when the President of the United States, flanked by General O'Neill and Colonel Sumner, followed by two of his Secret Service agents, came directly at him like a guided missile. John stopped his forward momentum, stiffened into attention, and saluted the Commander in Chief smartly.
"Relax son, relax. I just wanted to see you in person. Now, Jack tells me there's a meeting room over there we can talk in private. Let's go."
The man casually waved a hand in an approximation of a salute, pointed, and walked off, fully expecting John to follow. Taking deep breaths to calm his rapidly beating heart, John did as ordered. The barely-there snicker General O'Neill sent his way helped John to regain his composure into something a little more dignified than a hyperventilating mess.
"You see Major, it's not every day I have to give the order to blow up one of our bases. And when the entirety of the National Security gets compromised over one man's safety, you could say I get a little curious about the whole thing," the president, Mr. Henry Hayes was scrutinizing Sheppard with intensity.
"Sir." John didn't know how to respond to the statement, or whether he was supposed to respond at all.
"Anyway, I'm glad I didn't have to go through with it. I'm reading reports saying the productivity of the Exploration Project there has skyrocketed since your arrival. Isn't that right Jack?" President Hayes had a gleam in his eyes that said he was enjoying his pun at the General's recent experience.
"Yes. Mr. President. Rockets in the sky." The General agreed sardonically. The president laughed heartily and patted Jack O'Neill on the back.
"Well, Son, I wanted to meet you. I have seen your jacket and I can see your decorations. Jack tells me he's got a good feeling about you, and he tends to be right on these things most of the time. So good luck and try not to let the Ancient gadgets go psycho all over us again, yeah?" This last was directed at Sheppard and he managed to string together a coherent response just in time;
"Thank you, Sir, and I will do my best."
"Good man." John also received a pat on the shoulder as president Hayes made his exit the same way he made his entrance; taking his entourage away with him like a sweeping tornado.
John took a couple of minutes to just stay there in the relevant privacy of the meeting room to get over the shock that he had just met the POTUS. Nothing drastic had occurred. The man hadn't been angry; in fact, he seemed to have taken the whole thing in good sport. 'Well, he's read into everything that comes through the Gate and whatever the Gate teams bring back with themselves. So maybe he's just jaded,' John thought to himself.
When he finally exited the meeting room himself, Sheppard found Colonel Mitchell just outside as if he'd been waiting for him.
"I was just about to call a medic or a recovery team." He grinned at Sheppard.
"You know, I wasn't sure myself. I had to make sure I was still in one piece." John agreed with the course of action the Colonel had almost taken.
"He has a way of making you feel like a hurricane refugee, you know, leaving you wondering what the hell just happened." Mitchell sounded like he'd faced the same experience before.
"Anyway, come. Let's go get something to eat. This circus is about to wrap up soon." Food sounded like a wonderful idea and John followed the Colonel towards the area they had arranged the buffet.

Why Do You Hurt?
because you cannot hold freedom
the sky is only air. the ocean is only water. the only freedom you will ever have is breathing, drawing this air again & again & again & again. You have to exhale, and it costs you something - you have to quench your thirst and it comes back again - there is nothing solid in being free, it is not a status to be achieved but an action to do. Free is an active status, and you worry you'll somehow forget. there are people who would control you. there are orders you could obey. you keep coming back to take this next breath, your own part of the forever-freedom of the sky, but sometimes you think to hold your breath. it is deceptively peaceful underwater. you don't know if you would notice it if you started drowning.

Born with the Moon in Sagittarius, you are likely to be innately optimistic, expansive and positive in your point of view. Sagittarius is a Fire sign, and so accentuates the passionate, idealistic and creative dimensions of life. Sagittarius is also mutable in action, which means you are likely to have an innate need for variety and change. When passion and variety combine, there is often a deep calling for freedom. Because the Moon describes your natural response to things, or where you feel at home, you are likely to feel most comfortable roaming free – exploring your world and expanding horizons wherever possible. This expansion can happen in numerous ways. On the one hand, this lunar position implies a love of travel, and fascination with foreign places. You may be something of a “gypsy” at heart, with a powerful longing to explore the world and move around. You may find you travel a lot, or seek work and situations that allow you contact with foreign places and cultures. Even if circumstances do not allow, you are likely to wish that they would, and can easily imagine yourself making your home anywhere in the world. Dreaming of far-off places helps you engage with your need to be free. Anything that brings you contact with exotic people and situations will warm your heart. You would rather dine at a distant Mongolian restaurant than spend yet another Friday night at the local bistro. Feeling free to experience other cultures satisfies deep emotional needs. This urge for freedom is very strong, and can make you restless at times. You dislike the feeling of being stuck in any place for too long, and will need variety with your environment. You may decorate your home in an eclectic way, or surround yourself with objects that remind you of places you would like to be. When life becomes too routine, it can easily seem lifeless and dull. Therefore, it is important that you freshen up your perspective from time to time by getting out to places that you have not been before. Another way for you to broaden horizons is through study or learning. This sign relates to the search for truth, and ultimately pursuit of wisdom. You are likely to find you have a need to feel that you are always learning or discovering something new. You may be an eternal student, or spend much of your time with recreational pursuits that have an educational bent as well. You can feel that your world is expanding through the knowledge that you acquire, and even if this just means you are a student of life, you are likely to find that knowledge opens your horizons and helps you feel free. Sagittarius is also the sign of the teacher, as well as the preacher. The need to seek truth and wisdom can also translate into a love of sharing that with others. You may have natural gifts for inspiring others to be the best that they can be. You may be very good at explaining different points of view, and may find that others are drawn to you for the breadth of experience you can share. Your greatest gift is your ability to give others the same freedom you require to find your own truth. When you let them explore different ideas and work out what is true for them, you allow them to expand their awareness. You are likely to make a good teacher, trainer or mentor based on your ability to inspire and educate. On the flip side, you may also tend to become so consumed with what you believe to be true that you end of preaching to others in order to convert them to your point of view. You may need to consider whether you have a need to be right, and a tendency to broadcast your belief systems as if they were the only possible option for others to choose. Because this placement implies a strong attachment to the search for truth, there may be a tendency toward believing that what you have discovered as true for yourself should be the truth for everyone else. And so, you may have a tendency toward being bombastic that should be kept in check. When pushed by an emotional undercurrent, you may “share” from a biased point of view, based on trying to prove your version of “reality” and bring others to agree with your point of view. Recognizing that there are many paths which can lead to the same centre is useful, and necessary when agitated by the circumstances that surround you. That said, you are much more likely to be optimistic, positive and sunny in your disposition, with a tendency to live and let live. Sagittarius is a sign of broad-mindedness and you are likely to possess a philosophical approach to life. As a rule, Sagittarian types are more concerned with the big picture than with attention to detail, and unless other factors are present, you may need to watch out for any tendency to brush over the fine print, and get yourself into trouble through an over-reliance on faith as opposed to reason. All in all however, your happy and optimistic disposition should be one of your greatest assets, and help you to rise time and again from any of life’s setbacks. Finally you may also seek to broaden horizons through testing the limits of life itself. Sagittarius is associated with a love of challenge. You may have a need to test the limits of what is possible for you in quite immediate or physical ways. You can instinctively rise to any challenge that is before you, enjoying the feeling of conquest that comes from doing something you couldn’t do before. Here, you can combine your natural positivity with an actual task to focus on, so relishing the new insights that come through learning to go beyond where you’ve been before. Your nature means you are likely to be very enthusiastic, and can draw upon a natural flow of insight and intuition in order to solve the problems that present themselves to you. You may enjoy extreme sports, difficult forms of physical activity or just long sessions at the gym. Finding ways to challenge and push boundaries is a great source of emotional satisfaction, providing you with the reassurance that anything just may be possible for you!

❤️ Virgo Moon (♍︎☽) + Taurus Moon (♉︎☽) :
Virgo Moon and Taurus Moon are extremely compatible. They have a great deal of respect and understanding for each other. Taurus is stable and pragmatic; Virgo is practical and attends to detail. They are made for each other. Both partners are cautious and approach new things slowly. They both enjoy working with nature and natural materials. Both are concerned about how change will affect them.Their differences lie in how they react. While Taurus Moon will forge ahead once they commit to an idea, Virgo Moon will constantly second guess and criticize their choice. The worrying done by Virgo will be comforted by Taurus’ steadiness and emotional stability. Taurus, in turn, helps Virgo to relax and become more instinctual. Virgo Moon may become annoyed with the lackadaisical way that Taurus Moon leaves things all over the house. Overall, however, this is a happy and content pairing. They meet each others’ needs for intimacy and pleasant company. They will be most content in the country or if they are able to grow a garden or at least go camping frequently. They have a need to interact with nature in some way. This pairing should do very well with minimal effort.

With the Moon in the practical and systematic sign of Virgo, you are likely to be someone who is highly appreciative of structure, organization and detail. You will find your life works better with well-established systems in your personal and professional life. Virgo is an Earth sign, and so pertains to tangible or physical things. It is also known as a Mutable sign, which infers a need for variety and change. When practicality and change are brought together, the principle of refinement is found. Born with the Moon in Virgo, you are likely to have an innate need to improve or refine the circumstances around you – combining practical know-how with the analytical quality necessary to achieve specific results. Virgo is a sign of service. You are likely to find you have an innate need to nurture yourself and others through offering practical service in everyday ways. Virgo is also a sign of humility. You may be quite happy working behind the scenes, adding your considerable talent for organization to whatever you are involved in and happy to be of service, often asking nothing in return. The satisfaction of a job well-conceived, well-planned and well-done often provides the result you need. You should take care, however, not to allow this natural instinct for service to be manipulated, or taken advantage of by others. Ancient astrologers saw a relationship between the sign of Virgo and the condition of slavery. It is important that your need to be useful does not turn into the need to be someone else’s “pack-horse”. The Moon refers to how we need to be nurtured. You will find a tendency to feel safe or secure through knowing that things are tidy, structured and planned. Routine is your friend, and establishing well-ordered routines in your daily life will help you think more clearly. Virgo is associated with process and purification at both material and mental levels. You are likely to be emotionally affected by how well your daily systems are functioning and how ‘pure’ life conditions are. At a simple level, you are likely to feel awkward and uncomfortable in chaotic environments. You will feel more serene and so focussed in an organized space. At a more subtle level, you can be emotionally affected by food additives, pollutants and synthetics in your environment. This is not to say that you are ‘precious’ or need to be wrapped in cotton wool. It is just that you will feel impurities more acutelythan others. Above all else, you need a calm, peaceful and well ordered environment to access your astute thinking processes. You are nurtured by organization and structure. You assimilate information better when processes are clear, and sources of nourishment relatively clean. This is a sign of mental discrimination. You may have innate talents for editing or discernment, able to describe other people’s traits, dispositions and downfalls. Thus you may have strong writing abilities, or work well in fields involving communication, personal service and customer relations. You are likely to have a keen mind, and a great eye for detail. This can be turned to its’ full advantage by seeking occupations that allow you to capitalize on your ability to spot the ‘bottom line’. You are likely to be very good at extracting the essence from something otherwise complicated. You have the ability to sort the wheat from the chaff, and find what is essential in a sentence, task list or schedule. Because of your strong analytical ability, you may need to make sure that you watch your tendency to be overly critical, finding fault with yourself and others rather than working toward improving whatever situation you are in. Your capacity for analysis is great for problem-solving, but can also be your downfall. You are likely to be highly adaptable, but also prone to excessive worry. You can easily fall victim to nervous tension by constantly finding faults or remaining in chaotic environments that go against your instinctual needs. It is important that you learn to take time out when needed, and find ways to remedy the effects of too much nervous tension. Meditation, yoga, martial arts and other forms of mind-body exercise can be especially beneficial. This will greatly assist you to stay focussed and calm.Often, those with the Moon here can be quietly critical of self and others. Your tendency to criticize your own efforts may make it difficult for you to see your own true worth. You may underestimate your contributions and be innately convinced that whatever you do, it is not good enough. This can be a humble and shy position for the Moon. Unless other factors in your chart offer more outgoing tendencies, you may fail to receive credit for all that you have achieved. It is important that you learn to recognize how useful you are. Next time you are concerned that you have not ‘done enough’ simply ask yourself if you have improved the situation you are in. Rather than striving to be perfect, you will find that striving to make things better satisfies your need to be useful, and helps you take unrealistic expectations off yourself. On another level, Virgo is associated with the body and health. Thus, you may have an instinctual interest in matters of health, diet and nutrition. You may be naturally quite healthy simply because you have an interest in your own wellbeing, and notice that life flows better for you with regular exercise and good eating habits. It is very important that you to pay close attention to what you do, and do not, eat. Often, those with the Moon here have very delicate digestive and nervous systems. You are likely to find that you may have trouble with your stomach or nerves if you lose touch with your own bodily needs. Excess worry or problems with digestion may plague you if you do not pay attention to what you ingest. Taking in pure food (as well as experiences) is a very practical thing for you. You can be adversely affected by processed foods, and overcome with anxiety if exposed to harsh or critical people. Making sure you improve the systems that regulate your own personal life is essential for you. Through good food, routine and regular exercise you can enjoy extraordinarily good health This interest in health is often quite strong. You may have natural abilities in any area to do withhealth, nutrition and healing, especially in the area of natural therapies, herbs and pharmacology. Often those with the Moon here are drawn to service roles such as nursing and community work. Finding ways to be useful is important. Any activity that lets you combine your innate practicality, fine mind, and willingness to help can work well for you, leading to beneficial outcomes for all concerned. Individuals with the moon in Virgo are usually simple in nature and prefer to live a quiet life without the glare of public eye. They look for small things in their life to seek happiness and contentment. It is the small and insignificant matters in life like plucking flowers from a garden that give them real happiness. It is in their basic nature to not only take care of themselves, but to take care of others as well. Thus, such individuals are of extremely helpful nature and will be first to lend a helping hand to those in distress. These individuals love to have a routine in their life. They cannot do without a routine and if it is missing in their lives, they tend to feel that something is amiss in their life and they are not in their true elements due to it. They tend to act in a fussy manner and are often labelled as complainers as they cannot function properly without having a routine in their life. Due to such characteristics, they love to take on such jobs or tasks in which lot of detailing is required or which has a great scope for micromanagement of things and situations. Such individuals are always averse to public displays of affection and most of the times get repulsed because of that. Such individuals tend to be shy in meeting up new people. However, once they get to know them and gradually open up, they are in their own elements and strike a good rapport with them. Additionally, they are born sceptics in nature and tend to be over critical of themselves as well.

Born with the Moon in Capricorn, you are likely to be innately responsible, pragmatic and measured in the ways that you respond. Capricorn is an Earth sign, and so pertains to the tangible and practical dimensions of life. It is also known as a Cardinal sign, which implies a need to take action. When practicality and activity combine, the urge to master material resources is usually present. With the Moon in Capricorn, you are likely to have an innately serious and responsible nature, seeking to make the most of whatever resources you have at your disposal. Responsibility, and all this entails, will probably form a background theme in your life. You may have had to step into a position of responsibility early in life, or received strong impressions from your parents (most usually mother) about the need to live up to certain expectations in life. You may feel a deep sense of duty around supporting others, and will naturally be drawn to areas of life expression which allow you to demonstrate a capacity to accept responsibility. You are likely to have the ability to assist and nurture others in practical ways, and will often be seen as “the capable one” who can be relied on to find realistic solutions to current problems. The Moon is said to be in “detriment” in this sign, implying that easy and spontaneous emotional connections are not your forte. You are likely to be self-conscious in your emotional approach, and may appear reserved at first, taking time to warm to others and develop closeness. While you may have a huge heart, you do not give it away easily. You need time to get to know others and work out how you really feel about them. It is important to understand how serious or worthwhile any emotional involvement may be before you get involved. Whilst to others this may seem calculating, for you it is just a realistic assessment of the fact that emotional ties can be burdensome, and taking yourself seriously involves assessing exactly where a situation is taking you, and if that is where you want to be. Yet this pragmatism can also be a source of strength. It can give you stability and create a realistic attitude to life’s emotional ebbs and flows. On the up side, this means that for those you hold near and dear, you will be consistent, strong and true. You have an innate ability to follow through on what you say, and are likely to value greatly the worth of family, continuity and emotional commitment. On the down side however, your pragmatic approach to feelings and relationships may lead to a tendency for projecting to others a cold and unavailable nature, concerned more with the bottom line of what you will ‘get’ from a connection, rather than just being able to enjoy closeness and intimacy for what it is. The sign of Capricorn relates to foundations, structures and the gift of Time. You are likely to value tradition, status, and social position. You will require from others the same level of responsibility and capacity that you demonstrate for yourself, and will respect people or situations that demonstrate longevity and persistence. On some level, you are likely to feel most secure when you have solid structures and foundations around you. To this end you may be somewhat conservative, with strong ambitions for yourself based on recognition and accomplishment. Achievements carry powerful emotional overtones for you, and you are likely to feel an inward need to live up to being the best that you can be. You may have a need to prove yourself ‘out there’ in the world as a concrete example of your inner values, so reflecting an aptitude for responsibility and commitment. Alternately, you may have a much more private idea of what success and accomplishment mean to you. You may be less concerned with worldly success and more concerned with doing the best you can on a more personal level. You may set high standards for personal development, with a profound sense of integrity and authenticity. Whether your focus is material or spiritual, you are likely to be committed to making sure that you achieve the things that you expect of yourself. If other features of your chart imply more freedom-loving or unconventional qualities, you may be at odds with other voices within your psyche. If you find yourself struggling between the need to fulfill obligations and the need to be free just remember that your innate capacity to commit and demonstrate responsibility can be expressed in many different ways. As long as you live up to your own expectations in terms of what responsibility means to you, you will feel emotionally stable and secure. From this stable base, you can spin off into any form of expression you so choose. You are likely to be highly self-sufficient and contained, but need to remember that sometimes we build strong emotional foundations by sharing our strengths and weaknesses, talents short-comings and abilities with those around us. You are no doubt very capable, but need to be mindful of a tendency to isolate yourself upon your own mountaintop of duty and responsibility. You may have an innate tendency to expect that no one else will be as thorough as you are, and so take on far more than you need to, at times even taking from others duties that are rightfully theirs. Try not to look down upon “mere mortals’ less capable than you, but realize that your strengths and capabilities have been earned through hard work and sacrifice, yet only count for something if you can share them with someone else. In sharing responsibilities, you will achieve the position of respect and responsibility that you so naturally deserve. In letting others demonstrate capability and endurance, you help build a fertile platform upon which material stability is achievedWith the Moon placed here, you are likely to be innately concerned with how you appear publicly. You tend to be aware of the value of reputation and protocol, and so, will avoid doing anything publicly that may diminish you in the eyes of others. Because you recognize the value of a good reputation, you will strive to appear capable, contained and in-charge. Whilst this is useful in terms of earning respect, it may mean that you avoid extending yourself at times because you will not let yourself learn. You can set such high standards of achievement for yourself that you expect to be able to master whatever you attempt almost as soon as you begin. Rather than learning through a process of trial and error, you will stop yourself doing things unless you are already innately competent. It is important that you recognize the need for learning or apprenticeship along the road to mastery. Showing others your vulnerabilities will not hurt you as much as you may fear, and can in fact help them appreciate your achievements more through seeing your commitment to high standards through hard work. Finally, there may also be a need to release old, crystallized emotional patterns or unconscious fears through subconscious re-programming. Because the Moon represents the genetic or emotional framework through which we view experiences and learn about the world, there may be a tendency to ‘get stuck’ when that frame is inclined to endure and ‘hold-on’. In this sense, unconscious fears, limitations and restrictions may prevent you from opening up to an easy, spontaneous flow of emotion. Old habits and memories can prevent you from connecting with the here and now. There may be inhibitions around revealing the true extent of your feelings, and you may keep others at a distance so they never know how much you really need them. Developing empathy, the ability to self-nurture and kindness for yourself are highly recommended, This will help dissolve any old and unwanted emotional patterns, and open the door for greater vulnerability and closeness with others. You may find tactile or emotional therapies useful for you if find this hard to achieve. Because you are used to demonstrating fortitude and resilience, you may find it hard to soften and let others in. But when you share your capacity to accept responsibility and build solid foundations in life, you are rewarded with full appreciation from those who can understand the depth of your emotional commitment.

Born with the Moon in the lively, communication-oriented sign of Gemini, you are likely to be a curious individual, with an active, versatile mind. Gemini is an Air sign, governing communication, the exchange of information or ideas, and the protocols with which social organization occurs. Accordingly, you may find that you have an innate need to know as much as possible about the world around you, and may have a talent for numbers, speech or the written word. Gemini is also a Mutable sign, implying the need for variety and change. You are likely to find that you are easily engaged in new things, seek stimulation and may become easily bored. You are likely to be very adaptable, and love anything new. You may be an instinctive multi-tasker, and may habitually involve yourself in many tasks at the same time. Your need for variety means you are better when doing several things at once, but need to avoid scattering your mental energies so that very little actually gets done. The essence of this sign is communication. Unless other factors in your birth chart dominate, you are likely to enjoy sharing information with others, and may be very talkative. You may find yourself involved with lots of different people, flitting from group to group, situation to situation, in order to exchange information and ideas. Information is the foundation of your emotional wellbeing. You are likely to feel at your best when actively engaged in learning something new. For you, information is paramount, and you may not need to study something in depth to feel that you know enough about it. As long as you have glimpsed the basis of an idea or opinion, you may then feel satisfied to move on. Like the literal social butterfly, you may find yourself moving from person to person, gathering data, ideas information or facts before moving on to share what you have gained. You need to know about what is going on around you, and will enjoy imparting to others the information they may need to get through the day. Sometimes, this love of information can extend to gossip. You may have a weakness for scandals, trivia and trashy magazines! You like to know what is happening in other peoples lives. This works well for you when your love of knowledge stimulates good conversation and an interest in the world around you. When taken to extremes, a love of gossip can work against you. You may find that you inadvertently develop a reputation for being fickle, two-faced or unreliable. Others may know you cannot be trusted to keep a secret, and so will exclude you from the true details of their personal lives. Or you may attract to yourself persons who thrive on discussing the misfortunes of others. This can create a negative backlash that will ultimately bring you undone. Discretion is an important trait to develop when born with the Moon in this sign. Because you are interested in everything does not mean you have the right to spread it around! This is a very inquisitive position for the Moon. In many ways, you experience a sense of personal worth by connecting to other people, talking to them about their problems and concerns, and finding out what makes them tick. You are less likely to be concerned with deep emotional intricacies as you are with the peculiarities of their life circumstances or perspectives. Once you have ascertained where someone is coming from and why, you are likely to then feel compelled to move on to someone else, having satisfied your need to exchange information, so entering another “data file” into your catalogue of human experiences. Your interest in others is indeed genuine. You may just find you have an almost unquenchable need to know more. In essence, you will need to find a balance between your need for information, and your ability to connect with others on more than superficial terms. As the Moon is also concerned with nurturing, you may have a special ability to make others feel good with what you say. Because you know how to nurture with words, you may know the right thing to say at just the right moment to get others feeling light and bright again. Gemini is a sign known for humour and entertainment. You may instinctively know how to keep things fun. Talking around the surface of things stop them getting heavy. You are likely to have an uncanny ability to turn the conversation around when needed to the brighter side of life. You are probably very good at defining emotions. You have the ability to categorize experiences based on objective fact, but may be less comfortable actually feeling what is happening. In this sense, you may attempt to avoid deep emotional experiences, feeling more certain of yourself with rational or logical discussion where you can analyze a certain situation, classify it, and move on. In time, you will need to learn to deepen your emotional experiences, so that you can learn why certain emotions occur. Rather than detaching from emotional involvement, you may find that experiencing emotion, then adding logic, helps broaden your social repertoire. As the Moon rules the instincts, you may have instinctual talents with words and numbers. You may be good at keeping score, at accounting, or any form of commerce. You may also have a love for trade, enjoying the hustle and bustle that goes along with bartering and retail. You may have a love of gadgets, and be drawn to anything bright, shiny and new. You may be an instinctive flirt, and love flitting from one admirer to the next. This Moon position is often associated with those whose main concern is with the external world, exchanging facts, ideas and commodities without getting too consumed by the deeper, or more mysterious, dimensions of life. This is fine, as long as it does not preclude you from acknowledging that you are also an emotional being, with passionate needs that also need expression. Then your love of logic can be balanced with a well-rounded interpersonal life. At its best, Gemini is a lively and versatile sign. Born with the Moon here, you are likely to have a quick and adaptable mind. Your interest in whatever is happening around you means that you will feel an ever-present need to “know”. Once you have discovered something, you will want to share it with those around. Upon this foundation, your need for communication grows. Emotional balance comes from being connected to your immediate environment and having other people in your life. The need for variety and change is usually strong here, and you will seek multiple experiences and projects to keep you on the go. Your curiosity can be both an endless source of discovery and a good deal of personal charm. Connected with others, you can share what you have learned. Moving from situation to situation generates feelings of newness and excitement that will always give you something interesting to talk about.

When the Moon is found in Pisces, the emotions are likely to be pronounced. Pisces is the final sign of The Zodiac, and has much to do with sensitivity – to oneself, to other people, and to the mysterious, unseen forces that shape our world. With the Moon in Pisces, you are likely to be a highly impressionable individual – strongly influenced by the compassionate, creative, imaginative, romantic and idealistic aspects of life.On an instinctive level, you may have a natural affinity for the abstract or intuitive. This affinity can be a blessing, or a curse. You are likely to be able to sense the hidden or energetic levels of life, soaking up atmospheres as if you were a sponge. Your feelings about people and situations are likely to be immediate, accurate and intense. Understanding that your feelings provide valuable information, but can lead you astray sometimes, means that you will need to learn to recognize the difference between an intuitive response to something, and an emotional reaction that is based on your response to whatever is going on. Your imagination is likely to be very strong. You can find all manner of nuance in many life experiences. You are likely to respond to all manner of visual and emotional stimuli, which work to jettison you off into the many worlds of your imagination. Here you can find recreation and release. Whether you prefer to escape into a comfortable world of your own daydreams, or immerse yourself in art, anything that works to activate your imagination feels like coming home, and enables you to nurture your soul. This is a great advantage if you turn your talents to anything creative. Most often, the Piscean energy is expressed through abstract art forms, so anything around music, film, photography, dance, drama, poetry or painting may appeal. Even if you do not practice as an artist, you are likely to be strongly in tune with certain art-forms. Because this sign is highly creative, opportunity awaits those of you who find an outlet for your vivid imaginations. You may also be highly intuitive, possessing innate psychic abilities if other factors in the chart are also present. You may have had a powerful sense of knowing from an early age, experienced prophetic dreams, or perhaps grown up in an environment where the women in particular were known for their psychic or healing abilities. Understanding how your “sixth sense” operates is your natural birthright, and one you can readily develop if you give it the time and respect it deserves.Pisces is a sign of mystery, and humanity is not yet at a stage of evolution to understand all that Life has to offer. We do not understand our intuition fully, nor do we understand all the dimensions which exist within our Universe. Accordingly, you may have a natural curiousity about the subtle forces which shape our lives which is beyond what other people understand. Your instinctive awareness that there is more than just the “Here and Now” gives you an innate acceptance of things which cannot be immediately explained. This sign is one of spiritual seeking. You may have a profound and personal relationship with your own experience of The Divine. This does not mean you are religious, and you may not follow any particular faith. But you are likely to feel in touch with something greater than yourself, and in your own way seek to live that experience out. As mentioned, Pisces is a sign of great sensitivity. Your life will be directed by feeling, and by the sense perhaps of an unseen “Hand” guiding it all. Love and relationship may be an area of life where you go through many lessons. Pisces is a very romantic sign. You may have a tendency to enter relationships or new experiences with rose-coloured glasses. Putting others on a pedestal means that invariably they must “fall off. Yet you have the capacity for a rare kind of loving, based on the unconditional acceptance of others for who they are. Sometimes you experience an exalted kind of love that will bring you an experience of true union with another. At other times, you may need to wake up to harsh realities, seeing others for who they are, and not who you would like them to be. With the Moon here you need to be in relationship with others who respect your sensitivity. For this to happen, you must first respect it in yourself. Most often, women with the Moon in Pisces have an easier time, for women are allowed to explore and develop their sensitive sides. For men, this placement can be more difficult. Many men are taught from an early age to repress their emotional lives, leading to patterns of fear and self-denial in later life where the attempt to shut down and deny their intuitive side. Sometimes men born with the Moon in Pisces fear their natural sensitivities. They react badly to the idea of anything ‘otherwordly’, as this would mean opening up to parts of themselves that have long been locked away. The sign of Pisces carries within it an innate urge to escape – to leave behind the mundane aspects of life. Accordingly, you may find you have the need to withdraw periodically from the demands of life, taking time to replenish your highly sensitive emotional system. If you do not recognize when the time to withdraw has come, you may find yourself unable to cope with the demands of life. Withdrawal or escape is an important part of the Piscean experience. Whether you do this consciously or unconsciously will be entirely up to you.A conscious manifestation of this desire to escape could involve taking time to be alone, retreating from the world for contemplation, meditation, purification and renewal. Spending time by the water, or in nature, is especially soothing. Natural environments help release the emotional and psychological influences you have absorbed from others, and process those experiences that are necessary for your growth. As Pisces is a sign of compassion, you may also experience self-renewal through acts of kindness to others, consciously offering your compassionate nature in selfless acts of service to others. The trick here will be in learning not to take on more than your fair share. Giving of your self is a natural response, but you may need to learn when enough is enough. Sometimes those born with the Moon in Pisces need to recognize boundaries, so that their generous and compassionate qualities are not taken advantage of. An unconscious manifestation of the urge to escape would be more literal. This is usually characterized by a person who seeks to escape from the demands of this world through addiction, drugs or alcohol, through becoming dependent on some kind of government or welfare system, or losing themselves by becoming the victim of someone or something. Sometimes those born with the Moon in Pisces unconsciously become sick, vulnerable or destitute. However the escape is experienced, there is often an underlying feeling of not being able to cope in the world. However it manifests, the urge to escape is almost always about seeking purification, restoration and release on an emotional level. Becoming conscious of underlying motives and needs will help greatly in understanding the complexities of such a sensitive emotional nature. Recognizing that the need to escape embodies a desire to merge oneself back with the source of “All That Is” can help set up constructive paths to become involved in life again, through which a return to consciousness can occur. Born with the Moon in Pisces, you are likely to have an innate need to find outlets for your acute sensitivity. You are likely to be drawn to the romantic, creative, compassionate, service-oriented or spiritual dimensions of life. Your natural ability to sense what is really going on is your best asset but possibly your greatest stumbling block. By learning to respect your own nature, you see clearly the people and situations that will give you the respect that you deserve. Yours is a loving heart, looking for union with another. In Love you will discover your biggest reward, and the most worthy reason to sacrifice.

Born with the Moon in Cancer, you are likely to have an innate need to nurture, support and protect. Cancer is a Water sign, and so, pertains to the emotional, psychological and spiritual dimensions of life. Your empathy for others is likely to be strong, and you will have an intuitive ability to sense what others need. Cancer is also a Cardinal sign, and so is concerned with taking action somehow. You are likely to feel a sense of responsibility that will impel you to take action where others wellbeing is concerned. This is a sign of emotional support; of deep connection to family, home, and togetherness. A sense of emotional wellbeing comes from the family and home connections that you create in your life. The Moon rules Cancer, so is in its’ own sign. This will amplify the lunar qualities of emotion, empathy and intuition. You are likely to be strongly driven by emotion, influenced by your own ever-changing moods, as well as the moods of those around you. As the Moon is cyclic in nature, waxing and waning as it orbits the Earth, you too are likely to be a cyclical being. You are more influenced by your own inner cycles and instincts than logic or routine. You can use this sensitivity to great advantage if you learn to recognize your internal rhythms. Then you will know what you need in each moment, and will naturally follow your own inner path. Moon in Cancer people often do best when they can keep to their own schedules. The ebb and flow of emotion will affect their vitality, and so the kinds of activity that suit them from day to day. You are likely to be influenced by the moods and feelings of those around you, and can be deeply affected by whatever environment you are in. It is very important for those born with the Moon here learn to take responsibility for how sensitive and emotional they are. Otherwise, you may find yourself constantly tossed around in the sea of life, soaking up other peoples emotional and psychic states with little awareness of what is happening to you and why. For emotional balance, you need to recognize the difference between what is yours and not yours. Taking on the moods of others can distract you from your own best path. You may be unable to discern between your own feelings, and attitudes, and those of the people around you, for you are extremely impressionable, and likely to be instinctively responding to how others around you feel. This is useful when it comes to nurturing and supporting. You have an almost psychic sense of what they need and when! But for your own well-being, it can be problematic if you are constantly invested in others’ needs, with little conscious awareness, of what you need yourself! Ask yourself honestly if you know what your needs are? Can you define them? Do they depend upon the relative stance of other people? Are your true needs being met? You are advised to take good care of this highly sophisticated emotional mechanism by making sure you stay centered and grounded. This can be achieved in many ways, including spending time alone in nature or by the water when you feel the need. Meditation and retreat will work wonders for you. Learning to invigorate your emotional self will be one of the smartest skills you learn in life. Your instincts are actually your best friend, and will serve you very well once you have learned to decipher between what is yours, and what is not. You must remember how readily inclined you are to soak up the atmosphere of what is going on around you, and so, stay somehow separated when involved in circumstances where it would be best for you to stay detached. This is difficult, but can be achieved through practice, and using mental imagery to affirm that you are protected and contained. Visualizing a calm and protective white or pale blue bubble around you can be very helpful. The yogic practice of pranayama (controlled breathing) is another excellent tool for keeping your psychic field clear and contained. The Moon in Cancer can be very traditional. Matters to do with home and family life tend to feature strongly. For some, there will be an overarching concern for all things concerning family life. Having your family around you will be important and you are likely to feel very responsible for your family’s wellbeing. For others, especially if the Moon is aspected by other, more independent planets, you will still be affected by family life, but may find part of your journey involves the continual struggle to emerge from the “familial soup” so to speak, and become your own person. You may have to leave behind your family of origin to find your family of choice. You may have constant change with the people in your life, but notice you somehow feel at your best when there is someone there for you to take care of. A sense of belonging comes from maintaining emotional ties. You will willingly take on the responsibility of caring for others – this a natural place for you to be. Accordingly, this is a very maternal/paternal position for The Moon, lending strong nurturing capacities. Your relationship with your own mother is likely to be especially significant, and you may have a close symbiotic bond. Sometimes, the need to nurture can be so strong that you tend to over nurture, or smother, those you care about. With the Moon here, you may have to learn to let family members live their lives in their own way. You may have to let go of the habit of becoming overly invested in your family members’ lives. On a basic level, you need to give support and nurture to those around you, without jeopardizing their independence, as well as your own. Sometime the best way to protect others is to teach them what it means to go out into the world and achieve results. Like a mother hen, you may have to let go of the urge to keep your “chick” close beneath your wings. You nurture others best when you are not attempting to over-protect them from what may be, in the end, your own worst fears. On the down side, this Moon position can also be associated with a tendency to attract persons who are so emotionally needy that the Cancer Moon person finds themselves constantly in a position of taking care of the other whilst secretly resenting the fact that their own need for nurturing and support is not being met. This unconsciously becomes the perfect “hook” for the Cancer Moon individual to become absorbed in taking care of the other’s needs, whilst failing to get their own needs met in return. Often, Cancer Moon folk find themselves in codependent situations as they attract needy people, requiring constant support and attention. Your need to nurture means you get confused around where your true responsibilities lie. This will reflect the basic premise that you are more aware of others needs than you are of your own, and so will take action for them before you will do it for yourself. Withdrawing from relationships where you play “parent” is important and will allow you to attract into your life an equal who will recognize and meet your needs in return. Ultimately, you must learn about the sensitivity and subtle, unconscious patterns inherent in this Moon position. You need to understand your emotional self without being overwhelmed by its’ demands. This can be achieved by actively seeking to nurture others whilst maintaining appropriate boundaries, by recognizing your need to be close and protective, and then asking yourself if your needs can be met. Setting up relationships where you end up being disappointed just perpetuates misplaced feelings of guilt and responsibility. You need to surround yourself with people who recognize your nurturing qualities, and can give you the same in return. On another level, Cancer relates to the domestic side of life. Your home is likely to be very important to you, and in many ways your castle as well as retreat from the world. Your home should be as calm and serene as possible. You are probably naturally attuned to home decorating, and know how to make it both comfortable and inviting. This is the sign of hospitality, and you may be a great cook, or drawn to any activity where you can take care of others needs. Bringing people into your home is a great way for you to show them that you love them. Whilst you may be emotionally sensitive in environments not familiar to you, you can be at your best when home. Every effort should be made to make your home exactly as you want it. You may change homes continually in your life, but what should remain constant is the sense of peace that comes over you when you walk through the front door. Born with the Moon in Cancer, you are likely to have a highly developed intuitive and emotional side. You are likely to have a strong empathy for others, and will feel impelled to take action in order to nurture, support and protect them. Your uncanny sense of what others need gives you the ability to stay one step ahead. You recognise the unspoken opportunity present in many situations, and can act in ways that give others what they need. This sensitivity can be also be used for your own benefit. Recognizing your own rhythms or tides means you know exactly what you need and when. Learning to acknowledge your own needs is important, and may take time. It is easier for you to sense where others are coming from than it yourself. But once this skill is learned, there is little to hold you back. Born with the Moon in Cancer, you are a natural homemaker, family person and friend. With your heightened sensitivity, you connect easily with others, and get great joy from seeing them thrive.

Washington state’s highest court strikes twin blows for criminal justice
THE SUPREME COURT of Washington state lies nearly 3,000 miles to the west of America's highest tribunal at 1 First Street NE, Washington, DC. Its jurisdiction covers only 71,362 square miles and some 7.4m people. But twice in the last fortnight it has pushed criminal justice beyond where majorities of the federal Supreme Court have been willing to go—or are likely to venture in the coming years
On October 11th, the nine justices (who are elected to six-year terms, as compared to their federal counterparts’ lifetime appointments) ruled unanimously in State v Gregory that the death penalty violates the ban on “cruel punishment” in article 1, section 14 of Washington’s constitution. Citing evidence from a study conducted by Katherine Beckett and Heather Evans, the court found that capital punishment, “as administered in our state”, serves no “legitimate penological goals” and is “arbitrary and racially biased”. The bias is pronounced: black defendants in Washington from 1981 to 2014 were “four-and-a-half times more likely to be sentenced to death than similarly situated white defendants”, the report found. This finding cannot be attributed to “random chance”, the court ruled. Only “overt racial bias” explains Washington’s disproportionate death sentences for blacks.

One week later, on October 18th, the same nine justices split 5-4 in recognising another advance in criminal justice: a ban on life sentences without the possibility of parole for juvenile offenders. This ruling in State v Bassett, too, relied on the Washington constitution’s ban on “cruel punishment” and the contention that this provision is more protective of criminal defendants’ rights than the federal constitution’s prohibition on “cruel and unusual punishment” in the Eighth Amendment. The state court drew inspiration from Supreme Court jurisprudence in Miller v Alabama, a 2012 case that banned mandatory life sentences without parole for defendants who committed their crimes before reaching their 18th birthday. Children, the state court concluded, “are less criminally culpable than adults” and should never be sentenced to the irrevocable punishment of spending their entire lives in prison. Four of the Washington high court’s justices protested that the majority’s logical leap in Bassett—which expands on Miller by invalidating even discretionary life sentences for minors—had “no basis in state law” and was simply a faulty reinterpretation of Miller. But as in the federal Supreme Court, all the defendant Brian Bassett needed was to secure five votes, and he got them. Now 35, the man who at age 16 killed his family will have a chance of being released from prison before he dies.
These decisions exemplify what Jeffrey Sutton, a judge on the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, explains in a recent book. In "51 Imperfect Solutions: States and the Making of American Constitutional Law" he writes that, “[s]tate courts have the authority to construe their own constitutional provisions however they wish”. The 50 state high courts are not compelled to parrot the Supreme Court’s interpretations of rights in the federal constitution “when it comes to the rights guarantees found in their own constitutions, even guarantees that match the federal ones letter for letter". State court rulings on the meaning of state law are “impervious to challenge” in the federal Supreme Court.
Though sweeping conceptually, neither ruling from the Washington Supreme Court will have a dramatic effect on the lives of inmates. There are 14 prisoners in Washington serving life sentences for crimes they committed as children; they will be resentenced but few if any will find themselves quickly released. And while the eight defendants on Washington’s death row will have their capital sentences cancelled thanks to the ruling in Gregory—no small change—a moratorium on executions declared by the governor in 2014 has meant they have not faced the actual prospect of lethal injection for several years now.
But the judgments have implications far beyond these couple of dozen prisoners and extend well outside the state’s borders. As Mr Sutton writes in his book, quoting the late Justice Louis Brandeis's sentiment regarding state legislatures, state courts, too, “have far more freedom to ‘try novel social and economic experiments without risk to the rest of the country’” than does the federal Supreme Court. States tribunals should not be afraid to strike out on their own. The Supreme Court in Washington, DC may be powerful, but it has no authority to weigh in on the 50 state constitutions under the aegis of state judges. The Supreme Court has been “less likely to innovate new constitutional rights” in recent decades than in the 1950s and 1960s, Mr Sutton writes, and Americans should be loth to regard it as “an oracle of truth”.

Who/what is your inspiration in your character design? And how long did it took for you to reach this far?
Ahh I always feel bad answering questions like this because I always sound so wishy washy, haha! I honestly don’t know what my process was with character design, but I will try and pare down some of my history with it? I don’t think I’m that far along, but I’m flattered that you see me as someone with something to offer on the subject haha. I’m still learning!
I have always enjoyed drawing people and drawing them from life. As a kid, I loved looking through concept art for animated movies as well as paintings and doll designs. I was always fascinated with the human form and when I was constantly told that people are the hardest to draw, I felt encouraged to study them even more! In addition to this, I am neurodivergent–and I struggled to fit into social groups. Sitting back and observing people was a coping mechanism for me–and sketching provided an outlet for nervous energy.
A few years ago, I started pursuing more formal Character Design as a possible career option. I began to be more critical about the way I drew and I started to frequent blogs like Character Design and listen to podcasts like the Chris Oatley Artcast, Paper Wings, and started to study Art Of books (I own the Tangled, Ratatouille, Princess and The Frog, Monsters Inc, ones). I was put on the character design team in a group project for a story mentorship class (via Oatley Academy) and that really helped me get a sense of the process of asking questions and looking for reference, seeing what’s been done before, what works, what doesn’t, critiques, etc.
Now, I still observe people (kind of stalkerish haha) and I love finding ways of seeing their “character design” manifested in them. I love asking questions like: Why does that one guy always wear the same shirt? What does a moody teenager actually dress like? What are the current fashion trends? What silhouettes are in style and what do they communicate about the person/society ideals? What makes that body type really unique? How does she carry weight differently than her sister? How does light interact with the color of his skin, vs. their skin? Go into your local grocery store and spin and point–make the person in nearest range your new protagonist! My local Walmart is a wealth of character design (and consequently more diverse than Hollywood ajsdfh).
When given a character to design, I like to ask a lot of similar questions about them and their story. Who are they, what do they do, do they have bad posture, what’s their story theme, etc…Asking questions is the best start, imho. You start seeing the character as a soul instead of leaping to visual (and usually trope-y conclusions).
I also keep a pinterest board devoted to Character Design–a catch all for general inspirations of shape and form, as well as cool historical photos and poses. As far as inspirations go for me, it depends! I currently love looking at the work of Annette Marnat, Al Hirschfeld, Joy Ang, Carter Goodrich, Dermot Power, Kaley Bales, Cory Loftis, Ian McCaiig, Claire Wendling, Gennady Novozhilov, Larissa Manderbach, Ander Zorn, Sheilah Beckett, Rachel Saunders (Baru), Nicholas Kole, Phobs, Michael Yamada, Jessica, Glen Keane, Justin Oaksford, Claire Hummel, Kat Huon, Karoline Stjernfelt, Victoria Evans, Cheeks Galloway, Genue Revuelta, Minkyu Lee, Mike Mignola, Angelica Russel, and Philip Light….to name…a few. *sweats* I hope that helps! Sorry for the Rambling!
#eitherangel#character design#asks#tldr: not as much studying as natural interest but I still needed studying!
